Now imagine the worst humiliation that might have happened to you ever. In front of your relatives? Probably not. Some of them have seen you naked before... In front of your friends?

Maybe, but still not quite. In front of your teachers? Nee, forget about it.

That must be someone really (really!) important to you… That makes it pretty clear, doesn’t it? It has to be your date. And the worst would be probably the first date.

Let’s depict the beautiful scenery. Late evening in May, trees in full blossom and warm enough to have a romantic walk. Bathed in moonlight strolling hand in hand with your date, through the breath-taking Planty Gardens (which is a perfect place by the way) right after a delicious dinner in one of those fancy restaurants in Main Market. You suggest to stop and seat on a bench and admire a marvelous view of Wawel Castle for a while. This is the moment when you want to make a standard pass. This is your moment of truth. Everything seems to develop just as you had planned before. Until now…

Piazza San Marco in Venice, Trafalgar Square in London, Piazza San Pietro in Rome, Red Square in Moscow, Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris, Rynek Główny (Main Market) in Cracow… All those places have one thing in common, of course except their historic and aesthetic values. That thing or rather things, we I should say, are birds.

Pigeons to be more precise. Among all the terrestrial fauna species, Columba livia urbana (so called urban pigeon) have domesticated themselves in most insolent way. “Flying rats” as we get used to call them, adapted to live with people in human environment like no other animal. Tricky as hell and determined to find food in the darkest corners of the city, became recently a plague for citizens of big cities.

Frankly, I don’t get it and admire the stupidity of people who go to the Main Market and feed them. They don’t

really know what they are doing...

Bird’s guano is one of those things that make me repugnant probably the most or at least is in my top three.

Sometimes loads of it make sitting on park benches almost impossible.

City’s authorities fight the flying enemy but it seems that they tilt with windmills. The more money they spend on capturing and releasing pigeons outside the town, the more of them come back and reproduce on Cracow’s roofs and cornices. There are even companies that assemble devices which scare off those persistent pests. Everything is useless. We just have to adapt to live with them.

Now let’s go back to our first date.

You seat on a bench somewhere near Collegium Novum, with Piłsudskiego Street behind your back, and lean towards your date. And then all of a sudden… Splash! Birds are going back to their nests and start the cannonade of guano. Bombs away!

So you try to escape left. Splash! Then you turn back and go right – Splash! again. Splash, splash, splash… The longer you stay under the tree the longer you stay in their range. Most of them are short ranged. Splash, splash, splash… All yours and your date’s clothes are covered with guano already. You think that nothing worst might happen. Finally comes the disaster. One of the bird’s bombs lands on your date’s face. This is over buddy. The date is over and probably everything is over. You see now, this is why people make wars, because they get frustrated. So instead of killing each other, let’s start with killing birds. Or at least don’t come across stupid idea to seat in Planty Gardens when pigeons come back from feeding in Main Market..

Freedom Freedom. A kind of feeling that all cyclists know very well. Despite you keep on touching the ground, two wheels and the strength of your muscles will take you straight up in the air. Don’t have your own bike here?

Don’t worry, you will find below some useful information how to get one in Cracow.

Rentals

Starting from the beginning of April till late October there are many biking points open, where you can rent a cycle for a ride. In that case you should know some basic rules that need to be followed in those places.

First of all, you pay in advance (30-35 PLN per day). Don’t be surprised when service asks you for a deposit (about 200 PLN) or charges extra for a bike refitting such as luggage carrier or a basket. Remember, if you take the sport equipment for more days you should definitely negotiate a price. Your friends accompany you? Ask for a discount! They usually offer a bargain price for a group which is taking five and more cycles.

Don’t forget to bring your ID. It can be a passport or a driving license. The last but not least – “rent for a day” means almost always working hours of a biking point f.e. from 9am till 10pm, not round the clock.

Self-service rental

Just as Paris and Barcelona, Cracow offers for its guests an automated bike rental service called BikeOne. Three-speed city bicycles wait for users at 16 stands around downtown. Before sitting on characteristic dark blue vehicle, you have to register online at www.bikeone.pl.

pare your credit card. First of all it is necessary to deposit 20 PLN, then pay at least the weekly subscription worth 15 PLN. The good news is that the first half an hour of every rental is free of charge while the next 30 minutes cost 2 PLN (60 min – 3 PLN, every next hour – 4 PLN).

Now you can hit the road! Find a stand on a map and return the two-wheeler to another station. Watch your vehicle carefully! The loss of a rented BikeOne will cost you 1.600 PLN.

There is a

One of Cracow’s recent improvements is the water tram which opened in 2009, and runs from Wawel Castle areas to Tyniec. It’s not only a pleasant form of travel, but also a great tourist attraction.

This year is the third season since the official opening of Cracow’s water tram. The season began on the 30th of April. The tram will course on a ten kilometer stretch, between the Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec and the Kotlarski Bridge in Cracow. The concept was based on model cities like Budapest, Vienna, Prague and Paris, where river navigation is an important component of local tourism. This project is a comeback to tradition. It seeks to restore the essential functions of the Wisła river, mainly its tourist attractions. Hurry up, because the season ends soon in the fall!

Cracow’s municipality worked intensively for several years to restore the proper status of the Wisła river. The project is entitled “twarzą do Wisły” which means “Facing Wisła”. Several changes and innovations can be noticed such as revitalization of the embankments, construction of a bike path towards Tyniec, or a recent investment: building a footbridge connecting two city districts: Kazimierz and Podgórze.

When and where you can catch the water tram:

The tram stops at 8 specially marked stops: The monastery in Tyniec, canoeing path, Flisacka, Dębnicki Bridge, Paulińska, Grunwaldzki Bridge, Kotlarski Bridge, Galeria Kazimierz, and ten mooring stands: Flisacka, Jaskółcza, Tyniecka, Paulińska, Konopnickiej, Rybaki, Rollego, Podgórska and Św. Wawrzyńca. On Sundays and holidays the tram courses according to schedule.

However, on weekdays it runs to Tyniec only if there are at least 8 willing passengers on Flisacka stop. Approximately 12 people can enter on board (bicycle transportation is also available).

A cruise along the entire route, from Galeria Kazimierz to the monastery in Tyniec (which is an amazing place b the way), lasts about two hours.

Ticket prices: Schedule*: Line 1: Flisacka- Galeria Kazimierz (Sundays and holidays): 10 am to 6 pm every 30 minutes.

Line 1: Galeria Kazimierz- Flisacka (Sundays and holidays): 10 am to 7 pm every 30 minutes.

Line 1: Galeria Kazimierz- Flisacka (weekdays): 10am to 7pm every 60 minutes.

Line 1: Flisacka- Galeria Kazmierz (weekdays): 10am to 6pm every 60 minutes.

Line 2: Flisacka- Tyniec: from 10am to 4pm every 2 hours.

A normal ticket for a cruise around Cracow is an expense of about 8 PLN per person, and a reduced ticket costs approximately 6 PLN per person (for children 3-10 years old, retirees over the age of 65 and disabled persons). There is also a possibility to purchase a two hour ticket which is 12 PLN per person or a family ticket (two adults, two children) for the price of 22 PLN. Carrying a bicycle on board costs 8 PLN. If you are interested in a course to Tyniec, you have to pay 25 PLN for a normal ticket and 20 PLN for a reduced ticket. A family must pay 80 PLN. If you want to return to Cracow by water tram, the return tickets are sold with a 20% discount which is respectively 20 PLN (normal), 16 PLN (reduced), 64 PLN (family). All tickets may be purchased at the water tram operator.

Cracow’s water tram stands out from other vessels and boats thanks to its characteristic logo, labeled stops, and fixed schedule. There are future plans to expand the route, south towards Niepołomice and north towards Aushwitz, which will be an additional tourist attraction.

tips to avoid getting overcharged by

drivers

1. Check for the corporation signs

Avoid services of freelancer cab drivers. Make sure that your taxi is part of a bigger corporation. Corporate cabs keep their stands closed for outsiders, so you should probably look for a cab rank instead of hailing one off the street. Once inside, make sure that the cab has taximeter installed in the middle panel of the car. Most popular taxi corporations in Cracow are: Euro Taxi, Barbakan, Taxi Lajkonik, Metro, Wawel.

2. Order a taxi instead of hailing.

It is usually safer and cheaper to order taxi via telephone or internet.

Ordered cab has its fare and tariff controlled by an operator so chances of being led down the garden path are smaller. It doesn’t matter if you are standing right in front of the cab you are ordering, phone call is the best way of avoiding extra charge.

3. Just ask.

Ask beforehand how much the fare will cost you and don’t take “I don’t know” for an answer. Every cab driver should be able to give you an estimate. If he/ she avoids answering your question then you should look for another taxi. It’s even better to pay up front but not every cab accepts this kind of transaction.

4. Taxi vs. Alcohol If there is any better catch for a cab driver than a disoriented foreigner, that has to be drunk disoriented foreigner. Try to avoid taxi-travel when intoxicated and when such is unavoidable, be sure to have someone sober going with you. If neither is possible you can always ask someone to call a cab for you and pay for the fare up front.

5. Have a walk Obviously, the best way of avoiding dishonest taxi drivers is avoiding tax-travel in general. Cracow has well developed public transportation and is lovely to walk around on foot. If you are unsure how to reach your destination, tourist information offices, internet or friendly locals can provide you with such information.

We have this stereotype about polish people that they are sad and distant in personal contact. I had to change my opinion immediately after I had come here. Actually, Poles have much in common with our Spanish spirit. Always open to mix with others and talk about their outlook on life. Good advice? What I like about the town is walking along the banks of the Wisła River, especially nearby the Wawel Castle and the statue of dragon. The view over there is breathtaking. Unfortunately, at the same time, I am not a huge fan of the local public transport. Often overcrowded with not satisfying frequency of courses.

Some Cracow experience has just taken me aback.

When polish people ask for help or information in the street I answer almost automatically in polish: Nie mówię po polsku (I'm sorry, I don't speak polish). Few times people did not believe me, because it seems that I am able to say it with correct polish accent. That is surprising for French person, isn’t it?

I have gathered some extraordinary experience with polish people and the city itself. Imagine, one early Monday morning while we were travelling back from Warsaw to Cracow, two polish businessmen, after half an hour conversation, tried to convince us – foreign guys, to drink vodka with them. Where to go out at night?

Before you go for Erasmus exchange program, there is one thing that bothers you at most. Who are you going to meet abroad? Cracow has become a major attraction for foreign students and hosts more than a tho-

As we found out from National Agency for LLP-Erasmus, most visitors come from: Spain (~190), Germany (~180), France (~130), Turkey (~85) and Italy (~75). But the most important is that the National Agency has recorded a growth of incoming students comparing to previous years. However,there are lots of exquisite dishes,that even choosy gourmetswill appreciate after trying them out. Have a quick rundown below and explore Polish tastes bravely!

pierogi They are probably the most popular Polish delicacies among foreigners.

Some places call them filled dumplings or ravioli but neither of those terms reveal the whole truth about pierogi. In search of this meal, please look for crescentshaped noodles made of pastry. They can be served fried (smażone) or boiled (gotowane) and filled with varied, tasty fillings. The first kind on your “must-try list” should be

Ruskie (Russian), stuffed with potatoes, onion and cottage cheese. Vegetarians can try pierogi with Kapusta (with cabbage) and Z Grzybami (with mushrooms). There is a perfect choice for meat-lovers as well, namely Z Mięsem (with meat), usually filled with beef or pork and onion.

Those who crave something sweet, should definitely try Pierogi Z Serem (with cottage cheese, sugar and raisins) or Z Owocami (with fruits). Ingredients of the last sort depend on the season. If you are lucky enough to stay in Cracow for the summer, do not hesitate and taste Z Truskawkami (with fresh strawberries) or Z Borówkami (with blueberries). The sweet version, covered usually with a dollop of cream (sometimes whipped), is just perfect for dessert. Remember, you can find pierogi almost in every restaurant and bar menu.

schabowy Let me introduce you to the king among all Polish main courses – Mr. Schabowy. All true Slavic machos will surely confirm that this variation of pork chops goes best with potatoes and special cabbage, fried with onion and bacon. It’s a safe order for those who don’t want any risk. Just forget about counting calories!

Have you ever tried American hash browns? Polish potato pancakes are quite similar. Chefs prepare them out of grated potatoes, flour, eggs and onion or garlic. Placki ziemniaczane may be topped with many condiments such as sour cream or melted oscypek (smoked cheese prepared from sheep milk). As a fan of this meal, I can definitely recommend the goulash option, known also as Po Wegiersku (Hungarian style).

The hunter’s stew is another culinary reason that Poles should be proud of. Don’t miss the opportunity to sample it during your visit! The base of the meal is chopped, fresh cabbage or sauerkraut with kiełbasa (sausage) or pork, pureed tomatoes, with a touch of honey, wine and mushrooms for flavoring. Sounds peculiar? Don’t worry.

BARSZCZ (or Borscht)

There is a little misunderstanding about the rights to this meal between Ukrainians, Russians and Poles. Of course, according to our sources, the Polish version is the best; but you must understand, we can be a bit biased. Traditional Barszcz is prepared from beetroots and meat stock. The consistency of soup depends on how many other vegetables are included, you can either drink it or eat with some extra meal. It is usually served with specific pierogi called Uszka (literally "ears") or Z Krokietem (with a croquette). That last mysteriously sounding name is basically a thin rolled pancake stuffed either with mushrooms, meat, cabbage, sauerkraut or a mix of those ingredients, covered in breadcrumbs and fried.

What else can be said, every country offers its own gastronomic adventures. Iceland has pickled ram's testicles, we have Flaki. So have the guts to try it out for Christ’s Sake!

TASTES OF CRACOW Since you have the great opportunity to discover the beauty of Cracow, let’s have a brief look on local tidbits that can’t be missed on your road! Is it high time for lunch? Head your steps toward the Jewish district called Kazimierz. Once you get to Plac Nowy, you will notice the pavilion with little bars in the middle of the square.

They all sell Zapiekanka, a halved baguette famous for its quality of bread and many, many flavours to choose from.

The base is topped off with mushrooms, tomatoes and cheese – the rest is your decision. From Hawaiian (with pineapple and barbecue sauce) and Diablo (extra spicy) to Greek (olives, feta cheese, mixed vegetables), and Gypsy (ham, sweet and sour sauce) - you can have it all!

Cracow is known for its jazz and blues artists, some even say that jazz defines Cracow. Music is everywhere if you only know where to look.

In this issue, we present some of the unique jazz and blues bars located in Cracow’s old town and nearby areas.

Awaria 9 Mikołajska Street www.klubawaria.com One of THE places. Located within a few minutes’ walk from the Market Square. The club itself is set in an old cellar which creates a unique atmosphere of the place.

You can enjoy regular concerts of various artists such as Jurek Bożyk (every Friday), Es Flores, Set Up and many more. A must-see for every blues or jazz fan.

Ptasiek 3 Dajwór Street www.ptasiek.eu Designed with a unique, charismatic style, seems to be a perfect place for a lazy afternoon beer or a round of chess. Stylish furnishing and an exceptional summer-garden makes it feel like home. Various concerts, jam sessions, gaming nights, live music performers, can satisfy even the pickiest of musicophiles around.

The club is divided into four rooms with different destinations. The top corner room with its wooden floor, old dresser and collection of antique clocks resembles small jazz bars from New Orleans.

The second room is more modern with a bit of discrete luxury and a well-equipped bar. Two other rooms, located underground are very spacious, used for concerts and other events.

concerts every day. The Club prefers all kinds of jazz, from classic to fusion. Every music lover will find something for his or her taste. A coloristic and slightly illuminated interior, supported by smooth live music performed by the very best, makes this place unique and a must-see for every musicophile.

Small and uniquely designed. Warsztat Café is one of those places that are hard to find but are totally worth the effort.

The interior resembles some kind of instrumental workshop or even a museum. Violins, trumpets, trombones, drums hanging overhead; a uniquely designed bar with a vertically positioned piano. All this contributes to an amazing atmosphere of the place. Live piano acts planned or performed by completely random people, professional service and well-equipped bar all add up to the uniqueness of Warsztat Café.

Jazz Faust Café 21 Szewska Street www.jazzfaustcafe.pl Music and more. Jazz Faust Café located just by the Market Square is a perfectly balanced place, both in design and style. Apart from a warm, slightly illuminated interior you can enjoy live music acts performed by various blues and jazz artists, poetry meetings, photography exhibits and more. As the café owner likes to say “Faust Café is the equilibrium of the body and mind”.

It's a perfect thing to enjoy during the summer: Some can crave for a can of coke all year long even though it clearly tastes best in the summer. The same thing with open air music festivals. Coke Live Music Festival was established in 2006. Since then it became a traditional finale of Polish summer festivals being annually held at the end of August

It’s addictive: Since the first edition - held on a training football field - Coke Festival sees its audience grow year by year. 30 thousand crowd three years ago inspired the organizers to move. The new venue is Arfield - Aviation Museum. Despite the misleading name it is placed near the city center and you can get there by bus in 15 minutes. Last year 45 thousand people attended and the trend is believed to continue.

It’s a mixture: The bottle of coke contains a mixture of caffeine, sugar, coka extract, kola nut and many others at first sight unfit ingredients. Similarly the crowd of the festival is a mixture of people from different subcultures. Fans of hip-hop, indie rockers, hipsters and regular party goers combine to create a surprisingly kind, favorably disposed group. You can be sure that they will take you to hang out with them for various after parties if you dare to ask them.

It’s no.1: Coca-Cola Company leads the world in selling non-alcoholic beverages and Coke Festival is hosting this summer’s no.1 possible headliner. Kanye West - acclaimed rapper, singer, producer and performer. Since the release of his latest album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” and enthusiastic reviews in virtually all the media he is considered a new king of pop.

But still - his more hardcore hip-hop origins, flawless technical skills and impressive visuals effects on stage make his show a must-see for everyone.

It’s dark: Music of Joy Division influenced the sound of Interpol and White Lies just like caramel defined the color of Coke. But despite the poor form that both bands showed on their latest releases they still have enough caffeine inside them to pull off an energetic rock concert.

... but it also is sweet and poppy: Absolutely everything about the band You Me at Six – their song titles (“Save It for the Bedroom”, “Gossip”, “Kiss and Tell”), riffs, image and attitude – makes them a perfect summer festival band. At six. It’s good to have something refreshing while the sun is still shining.

It’s energy-boosting: Some would put Editors along with Interpol and White Lies. It would be fair when considering Tom Smith’s voice only. Other then that Editors on stage are more New Order than Joy Division considering the dance energy combined with still very high level of emotions. Besides – the guys love to play in Poland and have always been able to establish a great connection with the crowd.

The 9th Sacrum Profanum Festival will be a celebration of American minimalism. This year’s American edition of the Sacrum Profanum Festival will start on the 11th of September in the Arcelor Mittal Poland tinning plant.

The concert is going to be an unprecedented event: Steve Reich– an icon of the genre, who will be celebrating his 75th birthday in Krakow, will share the stage with Jonny Greenwood, guitarist of Radiohead.

Aphex Twin, Adrian Utley of Portishead, Will Gregory of Goldfrapp, Tom Verlaine of Television, Envee, Leszek Możdżer, and Piotr Orzechowski are the artists to have been confirmed as participants of the final concert in this year’s American edition of the Sacrum Profanum Festival. The artists will meet on stage with Steve Reich and will present new, surprising interpretations of such classics as Come Out, Different Trains, Pendulum Music, Electric Guitar Phase and Piano Phase. youngest.You can notice that at first glance.The local architecture is typical for agglomeration of workers, but what is interesting in that area is a large number of the so-called “green belts”.

First, we catch a tram from the city center. The best stop to get off is the Central Square (Plac Centralny). Everywhere around us, streets expand far beyond eyesight. I believe that the names of the tenement houses, especially the shops, have not been changed since the 1980’s or 1990’s. Buildings and cultural objects refer to the Renaissance and Modernism. This type of architecture is called Social Realism (or in polish Socrealizm). At first we cross the street. The arcadian scenery is almost real.

Just check out the picture. On our right, we have an exhibition in front of the Nowa Huta Cultural Center. This institution offers many attractions for teenagers, adults and of course the youngest.

For example, you can join dance courses, piano lessons, sign language course, self-defense and many other classes!

The schedule is stuffed from top to bottom. After our short visit in the Cultural Center, we take a walk to the Museum, which commemorates the time of communism in Poland.

The museum itself, is not only a great place to hang out, but also a duty of every citizen of Cracow. Not to be so serious, let’s get back to something more pleasant. There is another community centre, near the Garden Housing Estate which is about 20 years old. It promotes culture via 11 clubs educating people that way. One of them - “Club 303”, together with children, works on making airplane and space models, and it is experimenting with paper/ plastic techniques. They also organize original and exhilarating activities such as amazing workshops, street theatre and fire shows.

Another advantage of walking along the streets of Nowa Huta district is space. You can’t get enough of it. Space is something that is missing in the city center. And I’m not only talking about people surrounding us from every corner. Nowa Huta is a place where you can really rest and clear your mind. Strolling along Stanisława Mierzwy Street, we head to the Swedish Garden and the Town Hall Garden. Sometimes locals name the latter “Piccadilly”, referring to the Piccadilly Circus in London. There is a characteristic object right in the middle, commonly named “Fish”. It is a sculpture or monument, which has no regular shape. During summer time, the majority of locals play chess on the tables invented for that purpose.

As you can see, our trip is about many cultural, green places, which are in the vicinity of our “check point” from which we began our outing. Because visiting all those places takes quite a long time, I will finish here, enjoying the beauty, which happens to be smiling at me at the time I am writing this article.

Against all circumstances and bad luck, such as fire caused by bad electric installation, or flood, Drukarnia has finally found it’s place on Cracow’s map. Now, its loyal customers may chill out and hang out in Podgórze as Elwira Kowalska answers in our monthly interview.

Drukarnia changed its localization two times in recent years. First Mikołajska Street, then Plac Nowy in Kazimierz district, now it runs in Podgórze. What were the reasons of those changes?

Well, in the first case it was just bad luck.

First Drukarnia, which we derive our name from, burned down due to electric installation failure. Back then, there were two clubs called Drukarnia at the same time, one on Mikołajska Street and one on Plac Nowy. It was supposed to be a chain of clubs restricted only to Cracow.

How did clients cope with the changes?

We have very loyal customers. Between the second and third club there was a nine month stoppage. We were very surprised that after those nine months our old clients remembered about us and showed up at our new club so fast.

We didn’t have to deal with the period typical for newly opened clubs where you have to focus on drawing customers.

Podgórze seems to be a forgotten district of Cracow, especially when it comes to pubs, cafés or music clubs. Why have you decided to open your club here?

We had faith in this place, besides we knew about the plans of building a foot-bridge here. We had to wait for it for quite a long time, as usual when it comes to city investments.

Speaking of which, did the opening of Ojca Bernatka foot-bridge had any influence on Drukarnia?

The influence is very visible. We hope that this side of Wisła Boulevard will liven up a bit. So far it has been almost dead. From our perspective, the opening of that foot bridge in November was badly timed.

There was a flood.

Not only that. The project has been postponed three times. First, it turned out that the ground was completely different than expected. Then, after

a month the project stopped again due to some miscalculations concerning weather conditions and then came the flood. But it’s finally here and the increase in activity is visible. Thanks to that bridge we attract more “weekend” and “before-noon” customers.

At the moment the club has four rooms with different designs and purposes. Can you still claim that you are a typical jazz club?

Of course we are. We have plenty of concerts planned after holiday season, which is pretty dead when it comes to concerts. Locals are leaving for vacation and because of the clubs location we are not oriented towards tourists. Such a club cannot be for everyone, you have to decide if you want to be a typical tourist location or do you want to incline yourself towards local customers.

Could you give us a short description of each of the rooms?

The garden is for everyone. It’s a very calm place with a wonderful view over the Wisła River. Recently, the city moved a parking zone nearby, so there is some traffic during rush hours, but in the evenings everything goes quiet. The first room refers a bit to Kazimierz, so it’s mostly in wood, dim lightning etc. .

I must admit, when I first saw that room it reminded me of some kind of blues bar down at the Missisipi Basin.

That only means we succeeded in a way (laugh).

The second room has a kind of “Warsaw style”, a sort of lounge. There are two rooms underground. Each holds around 150 places. One is a typical concert room and the other one resembles our club from Kazimierz.

Speaking of concerts. Do artists usually call you asking for organizing a concert, or do you have to look for performers yourself?

Artists usually call us themselves. Some of the people performing here are our friends or are recommended by them. Since the first Drukarnia opened on Mikołajska, we’ve organized lots of concerts, so we have quite a number of befriended artists.

Are those performers mostly from Cracow?

No, we have performers from all over the country.

What is so special about Drukarnia that it draws people from the Old Town, which is known for a variety of different clubs?

I must admit that we lack competition. People that “force” themselves to cross Wisła don’t have much of a choice but us. If they don’t find room at our club they don’t really have any alternative.

I’ve noticed that since Drukarnia moved here, small cafés begin to show up in vicinity.

And we are very happy with that fact. We keep our fingers crossed for everyone with initiative.

with HISTORY The underground exhibition “In the footsteps of the European identity of Krakow” is situated four metres beneath the surface of the Market Square and uses multimedia techniques such as touch screens, water steam screens or three-dimensional visualizations of monuments.

It guarantees an exciting travel into the vibrant, medieval Krakow during which visitors can stand face to face with history.

The underground exhibition was set up to present remains of the medieval settlement, from the times of two famous Polish Kings - Boleslaw the Chaste and Kazimierz the Great - and about 700 everyday items. Situated four meters beneath the surface of the Market Square and occupying a space of about 4,000 m2, the exhibition was prepared on the basis of historical items that had been discovered during the archaeological works conducted in this area in the years 2005 – 2010. It presents e.g. remains of the oldest secular Krakow’s buildings with medieval cobblestones, cemetery, walls’ fragments and medieval trade centre

where merchants were selling luxurious goods: expensive textiles, gold and jewellry. All of that proves that trade has been carried in Krakow for 800 years. Summary, the exhibition gathered 700 archaeological monuments, 500 electronic images of monuments, 600 three-dimensional reconstructions. Thanks to the employment of multimedia techniques - such as e.g. touch screens, water steam screens or - sightseeing the exhibition in the underground of the Market Square is a real coming face to face with medieval Krakow history. It is a great place to visit both for an individual tourist and for families. So, don’t waste your time and go see it!

What the eye doesn’t see

the heart doesn’t grieve over, however…

Some stunning monuments didn’t survive until now. This article aims to demonstrate one of them, which presence on the map of the city is not widely known even to Cracow’s inhabitants. The Rożnowski’s Villa is what I am going to write about.

At that time built beyond the frontier of Cracow, precisely on Dębnicki Cape. Today this area is the heart of the city that hides unknown places of a great importance to us – its citizens.

Unfortunately, they are forgotten or simply dimmed by the light of what is more popular. The Wawel Castle, Mariacki Church, Kazimierz - Jewish district of the city. Without any doubts they are fascinating and valuable in many terms. However we should seek for something more extraordinary.

Something that today may not exist, but still has its trace in today’s Cracow’s life. I would like to invite all readers to a journey in time. Let’s make a quotation here: “What is essential is invisible to the eye” our watchword for this exact trip. Shall we?

First, let’s turn our watches in the unclockwise direction to 1891… This is the year when the Rożnowski’s Villa was built. It was located opposite to Wawel Castle. This was the time when Dębnicki Cape was far bigger than today and there was no difficult to build a construction of that size on it. Villa was the three–storey building on the east side, two-storey in the middle and four-storey tower.

Red bricks were used to build the whole structure.

The first owner of the villa was Michał Józef Rożnowski. His son - Wojciech Rożnowski bought it in 1893. He came to Cracow with his family from Gniezno. After Wojciech’s death the villa was

Dębniki wasn’t a part of Cracow back in the beginning of 20th Century. officially in the possession of his children: Isabel Isabel (she was also called Ida) and Edward. Probably difficult situation made Wojciech’s wife – Mary, rent the house.

Since then, production of vodka was established inside the villa.

The construction was replaced municipal beach, which survived until 1965 and has been flushed out by another flood.

It was just the beginning of the problems for the whole family. In 1911 the villa was dispossessed by the Treasury, but after thirteen years of arguments and many cases in the court it was officially purchased by the country.

There comes 1926 and… the flood. High level of water made it impossible to get to the building.

Clerks and soldiers were trying to save as many things as it was possible by using wheelbarrows and boats.

This fact was the first factor that contributed to demolition of the building. Its bad location had influence on the level of water near the Wawel Hill. Constant outflows of Wisła ruined the condition of villa each year. Another cause was still connected with position of the edifice. It concealed the castle from one direction. This could have been seen as an act of disrespect when taking into consideration that Dębniki wasn’t a part of Cracow back then. The aforementioned causes were considered to be enough, to disassemble the villa and after the flood of 1934 the decision was made. Before the Second World War broke out, this beautiful brick building was already gone. The construction was replaced by municipal beach, which survived until 1965 and has been flushed out by another flood.

It’s one of those sunny although windy days in Cracow. I’m sitting at the Wisła’s waterfront opposite to Dębniki (today it’s one of the districts of Cracow). Thousands of tourists are strolling all over the Wawel Hill, Planty Gardens and the river banks of Wisła. Most stare at the castle hill. Some point at the Kościuszko’s Mound. The opposite side of the river seems to be almost invisible for them. None of the visitors is aware of what they are missing. Literally, they are in Cracow, but their existence and sightseeing lacks in reflection.

El Greco, Goya, Ribera, Titian, Veronese, Zurbarán… they have all arrived at the National Museum in Krakow!

The Treasures of the Spanish Crown is an exhibition of masterpieces dating from the 15th-19th centuries and loaned to the National Museum in Krakow by Patrimonio Nacional de Espana (the Spanish National Heritage) which is the organisation responsible for administering Spain’s royal sites and collections. The event has come about as a result of a collaboration between the two institutions which encompasses the mutual exchange of exhibitions. Under this arrangement, the National Museum in Krakow organised an exhibition in the Royal Palace of Madrid. Entitled Poland. Treasures and Art Collections, or The Golden Age of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, it enjoyed enormous success.

THE WISŁA RIVER VERSUS WASH-TUBS. Ksenia Ślęzak

In the past, people living in Cracow and nearby areas used to wash themselves mainly in the Wisła river, where special bath houses were built. They were located on boats laid at anchor on the Wisła’s riverside.

Not many people know that the drainage system in Cracow was fully created in the 20th Century. Before that happened most people were bathing in the city baths, at home in the wash-tubs or simply in the Wisła river.

First summer bathrooms in Cracow were created at the turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries. In May of 1898, Julia Wójcicka, city dweller living on the Felicjanek Street, received a permission to create the summer bathrooms on the Wisła river. She submitted an application to the city council in Lwów (that was the capital city of Galicia at the time) three years earlier. The bath houses were situated on boats on the riverside in the centre of the city (nowadays, it is the area around the Dębnicki Bridge). Today, people start shivering at the mere thought of swimming in the Wisła, because of what it contains. However, a hundred years ago, it was described as crystal clear.

The whole structure was made of houses, one of which was designed as a dressing room. In the past, it was in bad taste to show as much as we

expose today, while sunbathing. So as to avoid blushing out of shame, ladies took baths in especially designed clothes - ankle-long shirts.

Furthermore, the entrance to the ‘bath cabin’ was inside the house, and the space to take baths was between four houses located on boats.

These precautions were taken to ensure comfort.

After the summer period came to an end, the baths on the boats were dismantled. Their poor structure wasn’t appropriate for enduring the weight of snow. In addition, every object located in the river area, where the baths were taken, could have been a contributing factor of a flood. All in all, there was and still is a very strong stream.

Whereas, people living on the outskirts of Cracow were taking baths in the river, inhabitants of the city exploited specially built baths. One of them was opened in November 1905 on Karmelicka Street. It was a two-storey building. The ground floor was high (about 204 centimeters). There was a storehouse and a place for coal below. The main entrance to the bath (dedicated for guests) was separated from the hus-

Regardless of the date, people still like to spend time, near water areas. Nowadays, Cracow’s inhabitants swim in many places during hot, summer days. One of them is Przylasek Rusiecki. This place is located in the suburbs of the city. It is not guarded by lifeguards, so you should be careful after deciding to make use of it. You can get there by tram number 15. You have to reach the depot in Pleszów. Then, get on the bus (number 146). Get off at the “Przylasek Rusiecki” stop. After which, you should reach your aim. Another spot is called Skałki Twardowskiego. It used to be a quarry, but nowadays it is a place where a lot of people spend their free time, especially when the weather is sunny. Getting there shouldn’t take you much time. On Grunwaldzkie roundabout, you have to catch the bus that goes to Ruczaj (here are a few bus numbers: 128, 114, 124, 424, 194). Then, you have to get off at the Rostworowskiego stop. There will be a supermarket in front of you. On your right, there will be a road that leads to Skałki. The last but not least swimming destination is called Bagry. It is located between Lipska and Wielicka streets. There are three beaches there and a landing stage, so you can rent water equipment. Some parties are organized there during summer. You can get there from Cracow’s centre by buses: 108, 125, 127, 158, 224, 185, and trams, number 11 and 20. You have to get off on Lipska Street, then turn right and go through the housing estate. Finally, the destination should be reached. Enjoy your free time!

Many of you probably wonder, how to be in good shape when living in the centre of a big city. It is actually quite easy. We present to you, five simple ways on how to stay fit. Leading a healthy life means staying active.

1. Jogging Trotting or running at a slow pace can increase fitness with less stress on the body than from regular running. It is a very popular trend nowadays. More and more people choose jogging as a perfect form of relaxing before or after work. 15 minutes daily can help you prevent many illnesses and improve your body shape. Jogging lowers blood pressure, strengthens the heart, improves blood circulation, increases lung capacity, reduces adipose tissue and burns calories. The city of Cracow offers many parks, riverbanks and alleys, which are perfect for an everyday jog.

2. cycling Bicycles are not only an effective and extremely efficient mode of transportation. Thanks to Cracow’s special bicycle routes you can reach your destination faster, safer and without traffic. It is also a very healthy way of transportation.

Cycling is used by people seeking to improve their fitness and cardiovascular health. It helps ease arthritis problems as well. It is one of the best ways to excersise lower limb muscles.

3.rollerblading A modern sport, which is even more fashionable nowadays than jogging.

The largest percentage of rollerbladers can be located at Cracow’s Błonia- with its long stretched, smooth surface, quite ideal for practising this sport. One hour of rollerblading equals losing 400 calories. Muscles from the entire body are active, which means that we excersise the waist line, strenghthen the spine and upper arms. Additionally it is a perfectly safe sport.

4. Swimming Even though Cracow is situated far from lakes or the Baltic sea, it offers a large amount of fully equipped swimming facilities. You can take part in many water activities such as aqua-aerobics. You can visit the pool just to swim or have some fun in the water park.

Spending time in the water is an ideal way to relax while enjoying a full-body workout. It is believed that swimming reduces the harmful effects of stress.

It improves body posture, and develops a strong lean physique.

5. Aerobics If you don’t feel like doing any of the above, you can always visit a fitness club.

You can find one almost on every street. Every one of them offers a wide variety of activities. You can excersise by yourself in the gym, or you can participate in aerobic training with a group. It is a very entertaining way of staying active since it resembles dance moves performed to the beat of the music.
