As the hottest month of the year is just about to start, we give you a new (7th) Issue of Cheers Cracow Magazine. Kazimierz, the Jewish district, is one of the best places in town to hang out when it’s hot outside. Take a walk with Marcin Karolak, who will tell you all about good places to visit during the sunny afternoon and hot weekend evenings. All of that on pages: 42&46 Marcin will also tell you the story of the two towers of the Mariacki Church. This interesting legend you will find in the Join the history section. Hot weather drastically changes the appetite. Paula Łazowy prepared a summer menu for our readers. Especially the vegetarians will find it interesting. Paula will give you a list of places in Cracow where those delicacies are being served. More healthy tips you will be able to find on page 8. Daniel Jochemko tells us how to spend time outdoors and have a chance to drink some alcohol in a nice scenery. He was also the one to take the interview. This time Patryk Świątek, a big time traveler answered Daniel’s questions. Patryk is one of the authors of the blog “Paragon z podróży” (“Receipt from a journey”), 2011 Polish Blog of the Year. Joanna Bucior took control of the Take some advice ection. She will give you a clue about the beer bars in Cracow and will also tell you about horse riding in our city (this one though you will find in Stay Healthy Section). This Issue and the next one will also contain some important tips about living in hostels which you may find very useful while traveling on a low budget. We will also try to summarize the Euro Cup 2012. Daniel Jochemko took the pictures and recorded some opinions of the fans visiting Cracow during the tournament and I gave you my own thoughts in regular column. Of course, you can’t miss our regular columns: the calendar by Paula Łazowy, the concerts schedule by Daniel Jochemko. Take a seat, grab the newest edition of Cheers Cracow and enjoy the Summer.

Back to reality. Life in Poland after the Euro Cup 2012 That was really something. The most exciting event in Poland since World War II is unfortunately already over. If you missed it only because you’ve watched Stadiums of Hate on BBC before, regret it. The tournament was already named one of the best in the history, thanks to some spectacular facts. I will try list the most important right below. Euro Cup 2012 was really abounding in goals. Not even a single match in the group phase ended with the score 0-0 which is absolutely a record. Most of the fans will remember the clash between Germany vs. Italy in the semifinal. Euro Cup 2012 was an extremely fair play tournament, with only three two red cards (two of them in the opening game) and only three penalty shots (two of them in the group phase). Euro Cup 2012 was full of surprises like the defeat of the Dutch team, or the advance of the Greeks to the quarterfinal. The farewell of An-

driy Shevchenko and his two remarkable goals against Sweden will be remembered as well. Euro Cup 2012 was also the arena of dramatic tension. The match between England and Sweden, full of ups and downs (score 3-2 for England), is one of the examples. The other one would be Denmark vs Portugal (3-2 for Portugal). Euro Cup 2012 was a scene of pride. Irish fans supporting their team after losing 3-1 against Croatia, 4-0 against Spain and 2-0 against Italy, was one of the most fascinating moments ever. They gave an example of real football fan support against all the circumstances. Euro Cup 2012 will be remembered for the magnificent goals of Ibrahimovic, Balotelli (at least two of them), Błaszczykowski, Silva, Ronaldo and others. Euro Cup 2012 will be also remembered thanks to the beautiful stadiums in Warsaw, Wrocław, Poznań and Gdańsk. Euro Cup 2012 was the last tournament with the elite of 16 contesters. In the next four years we will see 24 teams. Euro Cup 2012 gave Poland a chance to show the rest of the Europe that Poles are no longer poor cousins from behind the iron curtain and I think that we took our shot and succeeded. Pictures of hundreds of thousands of cheerful football fans in the streets of Cracow and other big cities are probably the best proof for that. Now, let’s not waste this as we usually did in the past. Aleksander Olo Gurgul

Alphonse Name Day
A male name of Germanic origin. The original meaning of the name is uncertain. It could be derived from adal “noble” and funs “ready”. The name was popularized in Poland in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by the Redemptorist Order, whose founder was St. Alphonsus Liguori. Popularity of the name dropped after the presentation of Alexander Dumas’s comedy: “Monsieur Alphonse” from 1873, after which the meaning changed into pimp.

tips Summertime in Cracow
June was really an incredible month. Tons of emotions, lots of goals and wonderful celebrations all around the city, but football fever is finally over in Cracow. At last we can just sit down, relax, enjoy a cup of ice tea… Nah! August is one of Cracow’s hottest months and I’m not talking only about the weather. The city will be hopping with people enjoying nightlife or sipping drinks in outdoor cafes. But before you decide to join them take a look at these tips. You want to do more than just sightseeing in the summertime, don’t you?
1. Vistula is the place
At the foot of Wawel Hill runs the famous Vistula River, the longest river in Poland. And we’re writing this not only to remind you that it’s a must-see during your visit in Cracow, but also because it’s probably the best place to enjoy some nice outdoor activities in the summer. Cruises on boats and river trams? Check. Biggest city beach in Europe with a beach bar and a volleyball pool? Check. Pubs and restaurants on ferries? Check. Air balloon with an observation deck? Check. If you want to go jogging or maybe just sit on a blanket and have a picnic, this is the place to be. But remember – if you’d like have a beer with your friends, you better not drink it at the river bank. It’s one of the few places where the police is always eager to fine somebody for drinking in public.

2. Have a barbecue
Barbecue in the summertime is almost a national tradition in Poland, so don’t hesitate to grab a large Polish sausage, pack a single-use grill and head to the nearby park when it gets hot. But where, when it’s forbidden to set up a grill in the Planty Park which encircles the Old Town? Don’t worry, there are plenty of places to choose from. One of the most popular spots is AGH University of Science and Technology Campus (Miasteczko Studenckie AGH in Polish), where hundreds of students frequently gather for “grill nights”. Jordan Park and Błonia Park are really nice as well. But if you’d like to settle in a perfect place, you should probably go by one of the lakes. Wait, lakes?
3. Meet me by the lake
Yes, there are numerous lakes near Cracow, some of them really clos e to the city centre. As nothing is better than the closeness of water during the sweltering heat of August, you should consider taking a trip to one of these. Zakrzówek, a former stone quarry now filled with water, is a really popular and picturesque venue. Currently it’s forbidden to swim there, but it’s proximity to the city centre (just around 10 stops when using public transport) makes it a fantastic place to head to. Beautiful Kryspinów lagoon is located just 12 km from Cracow, is easily accessible by city buses and has a guarded swimming area. Same with Bagry (just 7 km from the Main Market Square) or Przylasek Rusiecki. Just pick your spot.
4. Grab a bike
Pedaling a bicycle frequently turns out to be the quickest way to get from point A to point B during the rush hour, but it’s also a perfect choice to move around the city in the summertime. Why get stuck in a tram or a bus when you can move faster, get healthier and enjoy the good weather at the same time? Plus you can go on a couple-of-hour trip to the hills of Wolski Forest, Benedict Abbey in Tyniec or Ojców National Park. You’ll love it and you’ll enjoy your cold beer more than ever, when you come back in the afternoon. But remember not to use your bike after more than one cold beer! It’s much safer to walk your bike back…
5. Get a little extreme
We’re absolutely aware that Cracow is a great place for sightseeing, clubbing etc., but if you really want to make your stay unforgettable, complement it with some extreme activities. You might not have thought about it, but paintball with your friends, go-karting or scuba diving in Zakrzówek flooded quarry are easily available, if only you want to spice up your trip a little bit. Just do it! daniel jochemko

Summer at last! The sun is shining, the temperature is high, our cravings for something fresh, juicy and tasty are rising. What can we eat besides ice-cream to fulfill our appetite? What’s not only tasty but also healthy? We present you with a few of our ideas for perfect snacks during a hot summer day that are cheap, fast and easy to make.
summertime
snacking Summer veggie cocktail Ingredients:
• • • • • •
10
½ cucumber, 1 tomato, 2 radishes, chives, 1 yoghurt (natural flavor) 200ml, some salt.
Preparation:
Peel the cucumber then blend it and add some salt. Then, peel the tomato and blend it as well. Do the same with half of the yoghurt, mixed with the chives and radishes (add salt if you want). Take a tall glass and pour in the blended cucumber, then the non-mixed half of your yoghurt. Afterwards pour in the mixed tomato. At the end pour the blended yoghurt with chives and radishes. Decorate with a slice of radish or cucumber and your triple colored cocktail is ready to drink. Enjoy!
Refreshing arugula orange salad Ingredients:
• • • • •
1 orange, a handful of arugula salad leaves, a few walnuts, fried on a dry frying pan, thick-ground black pepper.
Sauce ingredients:
• • • •
1 teaspoon of orange juice, 1 teaspoon of balsamic vinegar, 1 teaspoon of honey, 1 teaspoon of mustard.
Preparation
: Cut thoroughly peeled oranges into slices. Sprinkle them with arugula leaves and walnuts. Mix the sauce ingredients together and pour on the salad. Add some freshly ground pepper to add some flavor and bon appetite!
Spinach & avocado quesadillas Ingredients:
• • • • • • • •
250g of spinach leaves, salt, pepper, 250g of fresh goat cheese (or other f.e. mozzarella if you don’t like it), 8 wheat tortillas, 1 avocado, squeezed juice from 1 small lime, 2 tablespoons of chopped coriander.
Preparation:
Fry the spinach leaves from about 3-5 minutes. In the meantime we cut the cheese into slices. On a different frying pan we fry one of the tortillas (without adding any grease). Now add ¼ of the spinach and ¼ of the goat cheese. Cover it with a second tortilla like a sandwich. Next, fry the quesadilla on both sides until it turns golden and the cheese inside melts. Do the same with the rest of your tortillas. While frying your quesadillas, dice the avocado into small pieces, pour the lime juice on it, add the coriander and mix it all up. Add some salt and pepper for flavor. The meal is done. Now put the “pasta” on your tortillas and eat them up.
11
Tuna pesto pasta Ingredients:
350g of pasta, a small jar of pesto, 1 can of tuna fish, 2 handfuls of black olives, a handful of sunflower seeds.
Preparation:
Cook the pasta until it is al dente. In the meantime fry the tuna fish. When it starts getting crispy, add sliced black olives and sunflower seeds and fry them with the tuna fish for a few minutes. Next, add the pasta to the frying pan and mix all the ingredients, while frying. In the end add the jar of pesto, mix it with the pasta, fry for a few more minutes and the delicious meal is done.
If you hate cooking and you don’t have absolutely any time to prepare a delicious meal why don’t you visit one of Cracow’s many restaurants that specialize in serving healthy (veggie) meals, perfect for the summer heat. One of them is Chimera (bar@ vegarestauracja.com.pl; www.vegarestauracja.com.pl), which serves probably the best salads in the city. They have so many varieties (over 40 every day) that the choice will be difficult to make. The restaurant is located on 3 Św. Anny Street, right in the heart of Cracow. You simply must go there. A different place worth visiting is VEGA (bar@vegarestauracja.com.pl; www. vegarestauracja.com.pl) located on 22 Krupnicza Street. It offers delicious, refreshing and most of all healthy vegetarian meals. Not only vegetarians visit this place but meat lovers as well. The prices for meals are affordable and reasonable, so don’t hesitate and eat your next dinner there.

The following guide has been provided for those of you who have never considered a hostel as an accommodation option while traveling abroad. Probably most think it looks just like one of those American scary movies, but believe it or not, the reality is much more safer and funnier at the same time, than you would expect. Now read the information below and think before you plan the next trip. Modern backpacking becomes only a matter of choice, so choose wisely and use your credit card quickly. Each year more and more people decide to travel on a shoe string which doesn’t necessarily mean poor conditions!
How to survive
part 1
in a Hostel World
1. Location, location, 2. Bathrooms location The more of them in the hostel, the better. Check the number before you pick Obviously, when backpacking, it’s easier to stay in a place near the city center, where you can always crawl (or at least stagger) back after the party. It’s much more convenient than to order a taxi and count that the driver won’t swindle you driving all around the city for hours. Don’t be stingy. Hostels situated in the city center might be slightly more expensive but it still means pennies compared to the hotel prices.
16
one. That will save you a lot of time in the morning when hordes of backpackers wait in the queue for the shower or the morning toilet. Read the description carefully on the website. When it says a bathroom on each floor, it might give you a clue of what’s going on.
3. Breakfast
Not always included in the price of your stay (check that), and even if, sometimes it might be only bread and butter or plain pancakes with a single cup of coffee when you’re lucky. Seek for hostels which offer buffet (Yes, some of them actually do). It’s always nice to start your day with a full stomach. Few sandwiches with ham and cheese, or maybe a cucumber + tomato + onion + lettuce salad, or a bowl full of corn flakes with milk and a cup of hot chocolate. Does it sound like a home type of breakfast to you? You will find it at hostels as well, just check the pictures on the website.
4. Trips outside the town 5. Inner events Most of the hostels cooperate with outer companies which will take you to the destination within 100 kilometers from your base city. Lots of tourist attractions are in the range of your credit card. Try to rely on locals, this is how they make their living! Sometimes you will find it much more reasonable to spend a bit more money, but save a lot of time organizing such a trip, at the same time.
6. Staff
Drinking Games, Salsa Course, Movie Night, Collective Cooking, Artistic Night… These are only a few of the attractions that a hostel provides its guests almost every day to make your stay unforgettable. Some even employ foreigners as animators (this is the reason why they stay in the hostel for free). Sign up! There is no better chance to meet other hostel’s residents.
Nobody knows the town better than its residents. Hostel’s staff is mostly recruited with those people. They are there to help you out and for your convenience. Never hesitate to ask for anything. This is the easiest way to find places which would never be mentioned in a guidebook and omit the overrated ones.
7. Pick-ups
Whether from the airport, or the train station, you can almost always count on, that the hostel staff will organize a pick up for you. Most of the times expect a befriended taxi driver who will charge you less than a regular cab. We strongly recommend it to those of you who are planning to spend less than two days in a city.

June of a football fan 18
It was a fascinating tournament. Lots of great games and some big surprises. Many reasons to feel joy and many disappointing moments. Pubs and streets full of fans bursting with emotions, talking about football and showing unbreaking support. Outbreaks of football fever in Cracow. Let me tell what did I see during UEFA Euro 2012 this June. First of all I saw hundreds of fantastic fans of on the streets of Cracow. Not only those from Netherlands, England and Italy, who came to see their national teams which were based in Cracow during the tournament, but also guys from Germany, Russia, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Spain and many others. All of them were showing a lot of pride in their country, but respect for the others as well. I especially remember incredible Dutch fans who took over the Main Square before allor-nothing game with Germany, but I also remember their faces after the painful loss and elimination from the tournament. So many incredible players, but I somebody had to lose in this incredibly tough group. I saw Englishmen and Italians as well. They were anything but disappointed after the group stage. I waited three hours in front of the hotel to see English national team, but I only had a chance to see Roy Hodgson and Glen Johnson.
I saw a lot of spirit and fantastic emotions among Polish fans. I couldn’t be in Cracow for the opening game, but I had a chance to see a lot of them in the Fun Zone in the Błonia field later. I was proud when I saw thousands of dressed up Polish fans singing and showing support for our national team, even when we were down 1-0. Polish crowds in the Fun Zone were huge during sunny days, but also when it was raining. I felt really happy after a good game with Russia, but I also felt really down when we failed to reach the quarterfinals. I could easily make it to the Fun Zone and get all the necessary information, but at times the zone was nearly empty during the games. I could have a relatively cheap beer and some good food, but I also had to buy some ridiculous coupons that were valid only for one day. Weather was disappointing at times. I guess that’s why after 6 p.m. I saw pubs full of sensational fans and thousands of people in front of their TV’s unwilling to miss any match.

The word but (pronounces as “boot”) means “shoe” in Polish. There’s a lot “buts” in this text. Eleven exactly. That’s how many pairs of shoes you need for a football team. Coincidence? I guess not. Cracow was all about football last month. I’m going to miss these days. daniel jochemko

“Very Cracovian” as one of our guests described Guliwer. Famous scholars, representatives of art, science and humanities including literature, often visit us. Wisława Szymborska used to pay us numerous visits, Czesław Miłosz was an often guest, always ordering his favorite lemon tart.

drink wine and have a little bit more Guliwer Café&Restaurant was launched for those seeking a cozy and casual atmosphere, in the neighborhood of the Main Market, who want to eat a tasty breakfast, lunch or dinner. For those who want to try excellent wine in an affordable price, or just a cup of coffee or tea brew and enjoy a splendid desert. We serve meals derived from Polish, Italian and French cuisines, based only on healthy natural ingredients with lots of herbs without any artificial
reformers, until late hours. The cakes we recommend: apple pie with cream, chocolate cake, lemon tart (Czesław Miłosz’s favorite) or crème brulee are prepared every single day by our chefs on the spot. Absolutely superb aromatic coffee Carraro, roasted in a family coffee-roasting plant in Italian Schio as well as natural, high quality tea brews La Via del Te along with really dense hot chocolate, seem to be a perfect complement of our Menu. Wine is definitely our specialty. We pick only short selections of wines from all over the world, which you can order in glasses or decanters in affordable prices (even for students). We also offer wines in bottles from our rich wine list. Guliwer Café&Restaurant is also an excellent choice for those who while having a break in school or at work, would like to check their e-mail, enjoying a cup of coffee or even lunch (We’ve got Wi-Fi). It’s a perfect stop on your way to the Concert Hall, vernissage or cinema which Cracow is famous for and proud of. Finally, Guliwer is a great place for family and sociable gatherings, intimate as well as big ones, at a ceremonious dinner or with a glass of wine and a snack.
„Very Cracovian Cracow” as one of our guests said.
A place where you can have breakfast or dinner in a cozy and casual atmosphere spending reasonable money which is not common in the Main Market area! Lots of herbs and a wide range of cakes including Miłosz’s favorite lemon tart! Delicious coffee Carraro roasted in Italian Schio and a cup of tea infusion La Via del Te will make your day. Wine is our specialty Affordable for everyone and mindfully selected from short series from around the world. Order a glass or a decanter.

They say you shouldn’t judge until you’ve walked a mile in someone else’s shoes. We are actually giving you that chance. After asking couple of foreign friends about their own must-see list, we prepared a schedule for the perfect day in Cracow. See what we’ve got!
Anamaria, Cluj, Romania
When you eat cake, usually the best part is hidden in the middle. The same applies to cities. To fully appreciate what Cracow has in offer, our starting point for exploring should be the strict city center. Begin the adventure around 11 o’clock in the area of Basztowa tram stop. It is just a couple of steps from the Barbican (Barbakan), a fortified outpost that used to be a defensive barrier of royal Cracow. After getting an amazing photo with one of only three barbicans still surviving in Europe today, you may head your steps towards Floriańska street. It’s snack time! While admiring architecture, look carefully for number 20 and small board “Zapiecek”. The entrance leads to a small patio with the kingdom of toasted sandwiches at the end. Pick one of nine ready set and take it together with the coffee outside where there are small tables waiting. Watch out for pigeons, they are huge fans of those delicacies!
Barbakan, Basztowa Street
open: Mon.-Sun.10.30 am - 6 pm regular ticket 7 PLN (the tickets can be purchased in the branch ticket office on in the Visitor Centre, Sukiennice, Rynek Główny 1)
Zapiecek, 20 Floriańska Street
Open: Mon.-Sat. 10 am- 8 pm

Javier, Granada, Spain
Walking down the Floriańska Street towards Mariacki Church, you will be amazed by the street artists performing for people passing by. Stop for a while and have a friendly chat. While entering the main square, you will immediately see its most recognizable part – the Cloth Hall (the Sukiennice), that used to be a major trade center. Nowadays, among cafes and souvenir shops there is a museum with Poland’s best XIX century artwork. Impressive collection is a must see for all, who just like me, are art lovers! After feeding your soul, it’s time to come back to earth and think about your stomach. Take the Grodzka Street, one of the oldest in the city of Cracow. For those who can wait for dinner, there are plenty of historic buildings to discover on this way such as stunning Church of St. Peter and St. Paul’s. Starving guys should go straight to the point where the Grodzka street ends and look for “Pod Wawelem” restaurant on their left. I love huge portions of great regional food they serve. It should easily satisfy any hunger!
Gallery of The 19th-Century Polish Art the Sukiennice (The Cloth Hall)
3 Rynek Główny Open: Mon. – closed Tue.- Sat. 10 am-8 pm Sun.10 am- 6 pm Normal ticket : 12 PLN

Ready for more attractions? If you find yourself at the foot of the Wawel hill, you cannot miss the opportunity to see the exquisite chambers of the Wawel Royal Castle. Following the legend, climb down to the Wisła river banks where the metal Dragon (the Smok Wawelski) is waiting. What’s surprising, the dragon actually breathes fire and smoke every five minutes. Don’t run away! I hope you have a blanket in your backpack, so you can now fully enjoy the great view of the promenade along the Wisła river and Polish beautiful girls sunbathing there! In case you need refreshment, turn right and look for the huge building of Hotel Kossak. On the seventh floor, there is Café Oranżeria offering an observation deck and my personal favourite poppy seed ice-cream with strawberries and crunchy meringue. Enjoy the sunset!

First thought? Most people would definitely pick Germany or Czech Republic. Maybe some of you would say Belgium, others UK or Island. Although Polish beer might not be seen as the world's finest, it may turn out to be the most refreshing and bubbling surprise of your trip!
Beer on the house CK Browar
6-7 Podwale Street Open from 9 am
There are many reasons why you cannot miss this pub on your road. The first one would be the fact that CK has its own brewery. Non-filtered and non-pasteurised beer hidden in the big tanks behind the bar, owe its unique taste to the old Austro-Hungarian recipes. Foreign guests have appreciated the pub especially for the possibility to order a meter long tube of beer. Intrigued? It’s a fine option for big groups of people. While drinking, you can try one of the tempting snacks that CK provides and watch a match game together. Get in!
28
House of Beer
35 św. Tomasza Street Open from 2 pm
You won’t find loud music here or the lurid décor of a cheesy pub. Instead of that, guests are welcomed by dark wood, leather chairs and a traditional bar with about 150 different kinds of bottled beer. Among Polish delicacies there is the whole collection of European brands on the shelves. Not convinced yet? The daily special is priced at 5 PLN for a pint!
Omerta
3 Kupa Street Open from 4 pm
Every fan of The Godfather movies knows the line “Leave the gun. Take the cannoli”. In case of Omerta pub, we need to change that quote and turn pasta into beer. This place is a time vehicle back to America of the ‘60s. Next to gangster motives, mafia and old good New York music, any beer lover will be pleased to explore over 100 labels here from small breweries. If you are lucky enough you can run into a real brewing show!
Irish Pub Pod Papugami
18 św. Jana Street Open from 1 pm (Sunday from 3pm)
It’s the safe choice for all fans of the Emerald Isle and its dark Guinness. Location in the basement of a sixteenth-century house make one of the most successful beer brands worldwide even more tasty. Cheers to that! joanna bucior

Children of Bodom
11th-12nd Polish Aviation Museum, 39 Aleja Jana Pawła II (125 – 225 PLN) – Probably the biggest event of the year in Cracow’s music calendar and one of the best festivals in Poland! Coke Live Music Festival’s line-up consists only of the brightest stars. Previous editions featured Kanye West, Jay-Z, Rihanna, The Prodigy or Akon. This year’s artists definitely don’t fall behind. Hip-hop will be represented by probably the best band of the genre and a must-see live The Roots (US) along with rap legend Snoop Dogg (US). Rock fans will be able to hear fantastic performances by Placebo (UK) and The Killers (US). It’s the 3rd of August 2012 and I’m sitting on a fully-packed bus to Katowice. I have some great tunes on my mp3 player, so I put my headphones on and turn the music up. As I listen, each track brings back some memories of what happened this year. Seven months… Damn, I’ve been waiting so long for the OFF Festival to start! Now I’m almost there, so just sit down and listen with me.
Ready to take OFF? January.
New year always brings new challenges and plans. However, in order to finally change something in our lives we need some inspirations which will make us believe that big things are possible. And there is no better inspiration than the story of one of the last great voices of soul music – Charles Bradley. He was born in 1948 and spent most of his life dreaming to be a singer. For years he had been struggling to make ends meet working as a cook, but his talent was finally discovered. After more than 60 years! In January 2011 he released his debut album.

After an inspirational beginning of the year in February I fell into a gloomier mood. I couldn’t force myself to do anything and deep, dark bellow of Michael Gira - frontman of an incredibly influential, constantly experimenting industrial, noise rock band Swans – was accompanying me all the time. The real winter.
In March
I had my birthday and as present I finally got one of my favourite, arguably the best hip-hop albums of the 21st century - “Madvillainy”. DOOM – a mysterious rapper, always hidden behind a metal mask plus stunning beats by Madlib. I loved that GIFT, ALL CAPS.
April
is the time of rebirth. Just as everything was coming alive, I had a real cool time finally being able to go outside and show some skills on the basketball courts. I felt rejuvenated, just like living punk-rock legends Iggy Pop and The Stooges when they hit the stage. And yeah, “Real Cool Time” is one of my favourite songs by them.
In May
there was a lot of partying going on! I had tons of fun during Juwenalia celebrations in Cracow, but the house parties with electropop by Metronomy bumping from the speakers were the ones during which I truly danced my ass off.
OFF Festival 2012 is the seventh edition of the most important alternative music festival in Poland. It takes place from 3rd to 5th August in the Three Lake Valley, Katowice, 80 km from Cracow.
Prices:
THREE DAY PASSES: 200 PLN (about 48€) / with campsite - 240 PLN (about 56€) ONE DAY TICKETS: 120 PLN (about 29€)

June
was the time of final exams at the university and I really needed a big boost of energy. Blitzkrieg of uncompromising hardcore and extreme metal sounds by Converge didn’t allow me to fall asleep, but now I have no idea how I managed to learn while listening to these guys. But still… I passed!
In July
I could finally chill. Reading a book on the balcony or just lying in the grass by the lake in the evening… Just a great time! Especially when I had my mp3 with “Endless Summer” by Fennesz on. Title fits perfectly to this glitch and ambient masterpiece. Ahh!
Ok, stop. We’re almost there. So many different genres, so many extraordinary artists. I can’t believe that during the next 3 days I’m going to see all of them live! All of them plus dozens of fantastic musicians like Battles, Andy Stott, Das Racist, Death In Vegas, Kim Gordon, Stephen Malkmus And The Jicks or The Antlers. Everything during one of the best summer festivals in the world, OFF Festival 2012. More memories are definitely going to stay in my head a long time after this one. Are you listening? Are you going with me?

Kazimierz district
42
Kazimierz is one of the most attractive districts in Cracow. You can plan a lot of hiking trails in this neighborhood because there is extremely much to see. We will try to lead you through the most important squares of the district and give some suggestions, where to eat or have a drink. We`ve prepared you a short trail, so let`s have a walk! Kazimierz is a place well known because of its Jewish history. It used to be a place for Jewish community from the 14th century until World War II. In that case we should start our walk near the cemetery on Miodowa street. It`s one of the two most important Jewish cemeteries in the city. The second one is on Szeroka street where we go next. It is located near Remuh synagogue and so it`s called Remuh Cemetery or the Old Jewish Cemetery.
It became little bit gloomy, didn’t it? So maybe let`s focus on something else. Right now we`re on Szeroka street where you are able to hear live Klezmer music during popular Shalom festival. It`s one of the biggest events during summer in Cracow.
At one end of Szeroka street you can see another synagogue, it`s the Old Synagogue. If you look right you can see our next path by which we get to the Isaac Synagogue. It`s on the corner of Kupa and Izaka streets.
Thirsty? We`re near the popular club Singer so let’s step inside. Isaac Merritt Singer was the inventor of sewing machine so you can find many of the vintage models, sold all over the world in the 19th Century, inside the club. During the day it`s a calm and peaceful place for a cup of coffee or soft drink but during the night it becomes a never-ending-dancing-centre with jazz and Klezmer music. One of those must-visit places in Cracow!
44
Hungry? If you leave Singer you can see Nowy square (also known as Jewish Square), the one and only place in Cracow where you can eat delicious and nutritious zapiekanka. The circular building in the centre of the square is full of stands where you can buy this delicacy. Even if you`re not hungry we recommend you to try one. Little bit tired? So maybe it`s a good time to go for a cup of coffee to another enormously popular club in Kazimierz – Alchemia club. It`s a place well-known for many concerts, especially the good ones, high level performers. Inside, when you want to get to the smoking area you have to enter the‌ wardrobe! On the other side there is another hall. Interesting solution, would you agree?
Our next stop is Wolnica square. If you will be lucky enough, you will find some fair or picnic there. If you do, your kids will have so much fun! Turn to Mostowa street and go further. Our last stop is Lokator, specific place. Partly a cafeteria and a bookstore at the same time. You can drink some coffee and read or buy books. Lokator is also the name of the literary publishing associate with this unusual place.
At the end of Mostowa street we farewell Kazimierz but we`ll see one more lovely place. Which one? Let`s turn the page! marcin karolak

place for
lovers
After a walk in Kazimierz you get to the Father Laetus Bernatek pedestrian bridge. At first glance, it`s just one simple footbridge which connects Kazimierz and Podgórze, dedicated for pedestrians and cyclists. Nothing further from truth! Father Laetus Bernatek lived at the turn of the XIXth and XXth century. He was the member of the brothers Hospitallers of St. John of God. He served in the construction of the most modern hospitals in former Galicia and in the Kazimierz district.
who knows?) lovers who go there to lock their love padlocks on the bridge. They write their names on them and they hang them as a symbol of their love. It`s quite possible that when they break up they take it back. Wouldn’t that be logic enough?
Father Laetus Bernatek is the patron of the pedestrian bridge which connects two popular districts in Cracow: Kazimierz and Podgórze. I wouldn`t be surprised if you didn`t see anything spectacular about that. In that case I must admit that Father Bernatek is also the patron of lovers.
This tradition came from Florence, Italy. The students from one of the local schools (Sanita in Costa San Giorgio) were taking padlocks from their lockers and they hung it on Ponte Vecchio bridge. It`s still one of the most popular places of this tradition in the world. You can find another love bridge in Rome, Paris, Wilno, Kiev, Venice, Brussels and Moscow. In Poland the most popular is the bridge in Wrocław. The others are in cities like Warsaw, Bydgoszcz and Poznań. marcin karolak
Why is that? Well, the footbridge became another bridge of love, established by the young (or older,

One day he started travelling along with his friend Bartek Szaro. With limited funds, but a lot of will to see and experience as much as possible. They began blogging about it and their passion turned into something really extraordinary. Cheers Cracow presents Patryk Świątek, one of the authors of Paragon z podróży (“Receipt from a journey”), 2011 Polish Blog of the Year. 48
Studying and working as an announcer at the same time; traveling and writing about it. Do you still have any time for yourself? Honestly, right now I don’t have a lot of time. For myself? I have some time, which I actually might call “time for myself”, because I like what I do. But most things in my life right now revolve around our blog. The most important thing is our first book. Maybe in September we’ll release a guide book with Rozdroże publishing house. The book that you’re talking about is based on the material that you publish on your blog, right? Or is it something completely new? It’s going to be a guide on how to travel cheaply. It will include all basic elements that you can save your money on during travels, and information on how to do it. Everything that we’ve learned so far and what we know. Many things that we’ve published on our blog will be there too. Ok, let’s finally talk about the blog. Originally it was based on a very interesting idea of “receipts from a journey”. Can you tell us what those are exactly? “Receipt from travel” is a project that aims to collect tips, ideas and advice for cheap travelling from
various people, mostly the ones that travel on shoe strings. This idea came into our mind right after we created our blog’s title. Generally we have prepared a scheme, a special form in which you have to fill some basic information about your trip: time, place, number of people, number of kilometers travelled, costs, information about the specific country and tips on how to limit expenses during the trip. This form is really easy to fill and when it’s completed it becomes “a receipt”. It’s also worth mentioning that you can win various prizes by completing the form. The contest is called Paragoniada. Yes, the third edition of Paragoniada ended recently and there’s really a ton of interesting “receipts” published on your blog right now. Have you already used any of the readers’ ideas during your travels? I have to admit that I haven’t read all of the “receipts” from this edition, because we received more than a hundred of them. But in previous editions we used them as a fantastic source of information, especially during our trip to Georgia. Information that we may find in “receipts” are really practical. It’s hard to find them in regular guidebooks. Sometimes you may find them on Internet foras, but you have to do a lot of searching. With “receipts” everything is in one place.
49
You just mentioned Internet. Was it any source of inspiration for your blog? Did you find any similar sites or was it entirely your idea? Anything you’d like to recommend to foreign readers? I really don’t surf the Internet that much. Before we started our blog I had not been reading other blogs either. There are a few portals for backpackers, but I mostly check the Polish ones. Sorry guys (laugh)! On your blog you’re promoting a really specific way of travelling: spontaneous, with a little money, hitchhiking, meeting local people etc. Normally people plan their trips carefully and make reservations in hotels in advance. Tell me why your approach is better. You can’t make a division by saying “our way is better than the other”. Our approach is definitely different. Trip organized by a travel agency simply wouldn’t meet my expectations. It all depends on ones expectations. If someone just needs rest, he should choose a travel agency. For us adventure is the most important aspect of travelling. And I don’t think there’s anyone who doesn’t like adventures. Some people are just afraid to leave the house or simply are too lazy. I know people who were always travelling via travel agency and they liked it, but one day they decided to
50
travel on their own. Some of them were more than 40 years old, bah even older. Trips like that changed their perspective, because they were much more satisfying. And they still do that! Once you try, you won’t be able to return to “regular” travelling. I haven’t met anyone, who would be dissatisfied with a self organized trip. In case of travel agencies it happens frequently. I’ve read about your cheapest trip. In 2009 you spent 4 days in Liverpool and paid only 40 PLN for the whole trip. I’m wondering if a guy from Liverpool can spend 4 days in Cracow for, let’s say, 10 €? Yes. Ryanair, Wizzair and other low cost airlines are available all over Europe and discounts are for everyone. You just have to search a lot, stay alert and find a good promotion. Both way flights may cost as little as 2 €, just like in our case. And that’s the most expensive part. A guy from Liverpool can, just like us, find some people who will let him sleep on their couch via CouchSurfing. Tickets to and from the airport using public transport will cost 1€. Cracow may be even cheaper than Liverpool. But you have to eat something! You have to fill your backpack with food? In our case it was true. Of course during our trip we
had some food, because England is expensive for Poles in general. But it wasn’t really necessary, because a couchsurfer who was our host, allowed us to use his kitchen. Cracow is cheaper than Liverpool, so an Englishman could really have full dinners daily, in a milk bar let’s say. But yes, if you want to lower the costs, it’s better to buy food in a mall, or have it prepared earlier. Do you think that a foreigner who wants to travel “your way” around Poland wouldn’t encounter any problems? Hostile people, language barriers, inhospitality? I think that an Englishman travelling around Poland would have an easier trip, than in case of a Polish person going to the British Isles. Definitely. In Poland when we hear that somebody is from abroad, we just try harder. Everyone would help, accommodate and entertain him in order to show our country from a better perspective. You just have to act nice. Travelling is about seeking something new, changing our surroundings. When we stay in one place for a long time, we’re getting used to it and it stops being attractive. You live and study in Cracow. Are there any places in Cracow that you still find fascinating after all these years? I live and study in the Ruczaj District (laugh) [about 25
minutes by bus from the Main Square], so every trip to the city centre is a mini-journey for me. Every time I go through the Main Square and the city centre, I just enjoy it. Close to where I live I have Zakrzówek with its flooded quarry and I really love that place. It’s beautiful. A little bit further there’s Bielany monastery… And there are many places in Cracow that I still haven’t seen. There’s definitely a lot to see here! Your exams will be over soon and you definitely have some plans. What’s your next travel destination? We’re going to India and Nepal for 2 months. We still have no idea what we’ll be doing there, but we’d like to climb a 6000+ meter-high mountain. We’ll see what we’ll bring from there, but it’s definitely going to be an exciting trip. After this interview there might be some foreigners who’d like to check out your blog. You’re a great photographer and they’ll find your amazing photos there. But maybe you’ll write a text in English with some advice on travelling around Poland? We’d like to have an English version of our blog, but right now we don’t have time to translate it. I’m sure that when we have at bit more time, we’ll at least translate our best texts. Right now you’ll have to use the translator (laugh). daniel jochemko

Competition
is not worth
the life of your brother
Being brothers isn`t so easy as it seems. There is always a kind of competition between such. We know many examples, such as Cain and Abel. Similar history happened right here in Cracow. Little to say! Look at the Mariacki Church. It`s towers have different sizes! Why is that? It was fraternal rivalry, of course. One of them (unfortunately) decided to be Cain. Needless to say that the other one had no choice – he became Abel – without his consent… In the 13th century, in times when Bolesław Wstydliwy was Polish king, the decision to build two towers for the Mariacki Church was taken. The legend says that the two brothers were commissioned and began to work. The older one built up the construction of the south tower while the younger one took care of the one on the north side. They were busy and they liked their profession. At the start they worked almost with the same speed and efficiency but after some time the tower built by the older one was much higher. Of course it`s no surprise – he had much more experience. His younger brother had gone mad about it – he was an extremely and dangerously ambitious apprentice. He decided to kill his older brother (like Cain did…) to gain the fame so he finished his tower and the one on the south side was covered by the dome with the height which his older bro managed to built. But this fame had a bitter taste and it started to torture the young fratricide. The story does not have a happy ending. The young Cain imitator was so smashed with remorse so he couldn`t eat, sleep or live a normal life after what he did. He came out on top of his great tower and started to scream about his wicked deed and after that he jumped out of the window.
Bolesław Wstydliwy
To remember this awkward story, the knife was hung at the door to the church. You can go and see it so you could learn how you should respect your brothers and sisters. It`s much more important than any kind of competition. marcin karolak

Enjoy the ride! 54
They are the link between us and pure nature. Strong, massive and beautiful, horses simply embody the sense of true freedom. What’s more, they let us taste that feeling. All you have to do is to sit in the saddle. There is a whole list of reasons why to start riding a horse. Check some of them! Stay sound in body During riding you develop balance and learn coordination. By using muscles of the legs, abdomen, back and shoulders, horse riders not only become more stretched but also gain higher awareness of their body. There is good information for those of you, who count calories – horseback riding helps you burn 5 calories per minute! Not to mention all those weight bearing exercises such as grooming, cleaning stables or carrying saddles. Who needs fitness?!
Exercise your mind That experience will keep you hungry for success and achieving new skills. How is it possible? There is always something new to learn about being equestrian.
Horses in Cracow The best part is that, with proper guidance you can enjoy horse riding at all ages and in almost every latitude. In fact, we have some studs in our area!

Is this your first ride? Wondering what to wear? Here are some clues you may want to consider before visiting studfarm! 1. Forget about athletic shoes. They are usually hard to slide out of the stirrups which can lead to serious injuries in the event of falling down from the horse. If there are no jackboots in your wardrobe, casual sneakers should work just fine! 2. Have you ever seen on a picture riders in shorts? There is a reason why not. You should always wear long pants when riding a horse. To avoid abrasions leave your jeans at home and pick either an old track suit or invest in riding-breeches. 3. Don’t forget about a riding helmet! Even if you may feel a little bit silly at first, that gadget can save you life! Riding provides you with many challenges that help your brain stay young and exercised.
Feel emotional connection Winston Churchill used to say that “there is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man”. Most people who found companionship and joy while working with their horse would share that opinion without hesitation. What’s equally important is that horses also bring people closer. You want proof? Just imagine having a great afternoon with your friends, enjoying drill riding or the gallop. A Little bit of competition mixed with a lot of pleasure. That’s almost the scene of an old good western!

You go to sleep
and they start drilling your teeth
PHOTOS: Dreamstime
The terrifying atmosphere at the dental office, unpleasant injections. How to chill out the patient before the procedure and about drilling under a general anesthetic. We will talk about all of these with Doctor Renata GÄ…siorowska from Astradent dental clinique.
How old are your patients? I’ve got many in different ages. Kids too? Of course, two years old to start the list and there is practically no limit. Who is usually the most afraid of the dentist? There is no general rule and frankly speaking it has never been related to the age, even adults may panic in certain circumstances.
56
What is the thing that people are most afraid of when going to the dentist? It’s probably pain as I presume. What is your method to calm the patient down? The atmosphere of the office might be terrifying a little bit. White smocks, syringes, the sound of the driller and the specific smell. That is why the first thing you need to do is chill out your patient. Introduce him to the procedure and to what is going to happen in the next few minutes. Talk to patient. Secondly you have to diagnose if the anesthesia is necessary. If the patient is
going to be injected with anesthesia, first we put some anesthetic gel on his gums. Because the injection itself is not the most pleasant thing right? Exactly. That is why we always use a tiny syringe and bring in the anesthetic very slowly. There are probably patients who are so afraid, that they ask you to put them to sleep immediately. There is a group of patient which we call “very sensitive”. It is almost impossible to carry out even a routine examination. That is probably a result of the past traumatic experiences they had. The only way to accomplish the procedure in those cases is full anesthesia. Do you actually put them to sleep? Yes, we have this opportunity in our clinic, however we usually try to convince them to undergo the treatment, while being conscious. It gives a lot more comfort for the doctor and the patient as well. The contact between these two makes it easier to accomplish the procedure with better results. But like I said, “very sensitive” cases usually reject that method and ask to put them to sleep. Is everyone allowed to be treated with full anesthesia? Patients need to be qualified by the anesthesiologist first. The patient is interviewed. All information about allergies, past diseases and anesthesia procedures are necessary. All of that brings the anesthesiologist to the decision whether or not the patient can be put to sleep. How long does the anesthesia take? It is recommended to make it as short as possible. The procedure in full anesthesia gives you a chance for the comprehensive dental treatment including removing teeth, working out cavity problems and installing the dental fillings. What should a person know, when planning to undergo this kind of treatment, which includes the full anesthesia? It’s not only what happens before, but also everyone should know how to behave after the procedure. He or she should not eat anything six hours before and after anesthesia. It is necessary to have a companion with you. A person “woken up” is not allowed to drive a car. Every time a case of anesthesia is being set, a board of doctors is present in the operation room: an anesthesiologist, an anesthetic nurse, dental sergeont, dentist with asistents. This becomes really serious. The patient is being monitored all the time. How many patients decide to do it that way? Not too many, but there is a group highly interested, seeking for it. How expensive is this procedure? The full anesthesia costs around 600 PLN, plus the cost of the dental treatment. dorota czyż
