This assignment covers Grading Criteria from the following units: Unit 69 Concept Art for Computer Games Learning Outcome 1 - Understand the purpose of concept art for computer games AIM & PURPOSE The aim of this unit is to develop learners’ practical skills in drawing game concept art. Learners will examine how concept art is used within computer games you will use a variety of drawing media to develop skills in observational drawing. You will use these skills to help you visualise imagined characters, objects and locations for a game concept and will reflect on the quality of their work. THE ASSIGNMENT Game design is about daydreams. But such dreams must be visualised and these images must be communicated to team members and managers for further development. We live in a world where images are everywhere. The games industry uses images for many reasons, from convincing us to purchase the game with attention-grabbing posters and eye-catching packaging, to contributing to our suspension of disbelief during game play through realistic graphics. The most effective images contain multiple messages which can enhance the meaning of the imagery. In this first assignment you will produce an article (online blog, typed document or video/audio blog) on the topic “Concept Art - What You Need To Know”. The article should clearly highlight the many forms of concept art and how it use by game publishers to enhance the release of a game title. You will need to research game publishers, and show an understanding of the visual communication of ideas - visual elements, style, mood and colour.

Limited Edition Pt1 TASK 1 LO1 Research Article - Unit 69 (P1 M1 D1) You play the part of a journalist for a magazine/E-zine who has been asked to write an informative guide on the topic “Concept Art - What You Need to Know”. You will explain and critically evaluate the purpose of concept art for video games using illustrative examples with supporting arguments consistently using correct subject terminology. Highlighting the many different forms concept art can take you will show an understanding of concept art roots techniques, methods a key game artist or game series and its history. Your guide MUST include the following elements as listed below. Research Concept Art: • What is concept art What is concept art used for • Concept Art media types and methods of production Visual communication of ideas: • Game Artist/Game series write up • Comment and analyse the Style & Look of chosen artwork • Comment and analyse the Mood & Feel of chosen artwork • Comment and analyse Colour/Theme of chosen artwork Collate Appropriate Illustrations for your article: • Reference images should only be used to highlight a given point (i.e. from your chosen artist and game). • All references images should include title, artist, date created of release date of game Write up/Blog and Layout of Article: • Article to be written from your initial research findings • If you have chosen to write an article then it should be neatly presented as in line with an online article or a written article from a gaming magazine. • If you have chosen to create a video blog then it should be correctly edited so it flows naturally and is easy to follow - you may want to include images stills or video clips into your video. Submission of Work All work is to be submitted digitally onto its learning you may include links to office 365 and dropbox accounts if video files are too large to upload to its learning. Work should be set out in order as listed above.
