Portfolio Creation Tutors: Alex Dobson & Amy Miedzwiecki Learner: Issue Date 19/09/2016 Formative Assessment 01/11/2016 Final Submission 13/12/2016 This assignment covers Grading Criteria from the following unit: Unit 45 Drawing Techniques for Computer Game Concept Art Learning Outcome 1 - Be able to create concept drawings for computer games from life Learning Outcome 2 - Be able to create and maintain personal drawing weblogs of computer game concept art Learning Outcome 3 - Be able to create and review career-oriented portfolios of own concept art AIM & PURPOSE This unit aims to develop learners’ understanding of the techniques of drawing in various media and their practical skills in drawing figures and environments for computer game concept art. PROLOGUE In this unit you the learner will use a variety of media and techniques to develop your skills and ability in observational drawing. The process of observational work includes the ability to analyse, measure, dissect and accurately describe, not only from the environment but particularly in reference to life drawing and the human figure. You will explore, understand and communicate what you are observing, while incorporating formal elements into drawings to show the use of line, shape, form, colour, pattern and texture, viewpoint, perspective, scale, and space. The study of human and animal anatomy and movement will develop understanding of what is happening under the skin, encouraging preparation of impressive dynamic concept drawings with enhanced realism. You will be required to maintain a portfolio of concept drawing work suitable to support career development. THE ASSIGNMENT You take on the role of a concept artist working within for a small games production company. You will maintain a personal concept art weblog that should include a range of characters, environmental pieces for a subject of your own choosing. You will need to gain regular feedback on your work and give feedback on others’ work via digital weblogs. This will aid you in your creation of a career-orientated portfolio and will encourage an exchange of critical feedback to improve yours and others drawing skills. You will maintain a traditional portfolio of concept work suitable to support your career development that should be kept in a suitable A3/A2 portfolio and be mounted/presented to professional expectations (from your art classes).

Portfolio Creation Task 1 Learning Outcome 1: 1.1 and M1, M2, D2 Be able to create concept drawings/paintings for computer games from life and will design concepts a range of environment and character concepts for a game scenario of your own choice closely following industry practise and workflow. You will keep a development portfolio of observational drawing including life drawing and perspective environments. You will keep a development log or report for your character and environment developments. Standard industry workflow: Ideas Generation, thumbnail, proportion, & composition sketches, colour experimentation and final character environment & character design sheets (minimum A3). Portfolio Requirements: • Observational life studies and environment studies • Drawing Medium - utilisation of three or more mediums • Drawing Techniques a range of drawing techniques such as line,contour, tone, hatching • Observational Techniques - point of view, scale & light and shade • Working Process - preliminary sketches, thumbnail, experimentation, final piece(s) • Physiology for Drawing skeletal/muscular form & body proportion (human) • Report: research, influences, developmental comments, analysis of own work In order to achieve M1 you are required to research and develop an environment from three different angles and a character concept from three different angles (6 studies in total) fully justifying all design decisions showing some flair and creativity in final work. In order to achieve M2 at least 3 traditional techniques will have been selected throughout your life drawing sessions and for both your environment and character concepts, their effectiveness should be justified through use of detailed annotations and analysis. In order to achieve D2 you need demonstrate autonomy /independence by creating an in depth highly skilled body of traditional work. You will have independently researched a wide range of relevant drawing methods and applied those techniques to your own work. Final work should be of a near-professional standard. Portfolio Creation Task 2 Learning Outcome 2: 2.1, 2.2 and M3, D1 Be able to create and maintain personal drawing weblogs of computer game concept art. You must create and maintain a digital weblog of your observational drawing commenting on your own and others work. Evidence to be submitted: • Create & Maintain Concept Art Weblog - Use Behance or similar professional portfolio which is easy to give and gain feedback on (other examples include Blogger, ArtStation) • Feedback Element - Receive and respond to feedback & give feedback to others’ weblogs in a critical but positive fashion In order for you to achieve M3 you must use an appropriate and structured approach to present all development concepts and final pieces in both a digital online portfolio and traditional portfolio. You should use appropriate technical terminology in all reviews and annotations justifying your development decisions (also when commenting on others’ work). When commenting on others work in a public domain you should be respectful and critique others’ work positively. In order to achieve D1 you will fully justify how your concepts meet specific criteria as discussed in your group. You will propose improvements as to how you and others can further improve and develop concepts to the desired standard required for marketing the game to the public. This will be evident throughout your own body of work and in your comments when reviewing others’ work. Portfolio Creation Task 3 Learning Outcome 3: 3.1, 3.2 and M3, D3 Be able to create and review career-oriented portfolios of own concept art drawing work. You must carefully present and review your own career-orientated portfolio’s, the focus of your traditional portfolio is to showcase your traditional concept art development. Evidence to be submitted: • Career Portfolio - Traditional portfolio and a digital online gallery • Portfolio Content to include drawing exercises, annotated studies, development work & final pieces • Reflection section you are to reflect on both development & finished work discussing technical/aesthetic qualities/skills and suitability for purpose In order to achieve M3 you must use an appropriate and structured approach to present all development concepts and final pieces in both a traditional portfolio. You should use appropriate technical terminology in all reviews and annotations justifying your development decisions and also when commenting on others’ work. When commenting on others work in a public domain you should be respectful and critique others’ work in a positive fashion. In order to achieve D3 you must provide a critical account of your development work and suggest ways in which your concepts could have been improved. You should compare your final technical outcomes to your game concepts original intentions.
