City Influx Research Docuemnt
My Idea My idea for this project is to create a magazine cover, for a new company called Visit Liverpool. I want to design 4 pieces using my own photography and research from Artists I will now look at. To link it to the city Influx I want to use images that show contrast in what I am doing. I have taken to the streets of Liverpool to find the images that would best suit my magazine cover and I found many that take various looks into the way a city is run including transport and leisure shopping.
These images I feel show contrast in the city, There’s a few ways I could take this design including using contrast images as a baseplate for my magazine front cover. I feel the boat image shows a lot of promise as the use of colour really makes it stand out. I like the way the boat is a kind a of anchor point for the rest of the city docks. As everything changes the boat always remains the same and I feel that is a very interesting concept.
Front cover Experimintation with my own Images
These are my first two front covers for my final peice for my media peice into the city influx breif. I wanted to use my own imagery in the process and i did this through the same technique of visit Liverpool which for this breif will be the compnay i will represent.

Andrew Geraci Andrew Geraci is a artist who has worked on the set of house of cards and currently works and co owns a compnay called District 7 media. He speciliazes in motion time lapse photography and video production. He developed the trailer for house of cards using 300 dslr cameras placed around points in the city and in about 3 months he had built a full scale scene using long exposure. I wanted to look at Andrew Geraci because i like the way his use of photography and the dark colours he uses which i really want to implement into my work. Most of his work is also done in the city and everything he creates could prove useful in my final design.
Transport In city’s
These images are taken from Liverpool and i find them really intersting as it shows travel and transport in liverpool. I want to incorportate them into my work and final magazine cover
Jasper James Jasper James Jasper is a Beijing based artist who was born in the United Kingdom and graduated from the University of London’s college and printing. He works around the idea of cities and people and how they are intertwined. He uses high quality pictures and silhouettes to bring emotional depth to the images he creates. Explanation of his work. His photos represent all walks of life there is never a certain type of person for every shot. He may focus on the young generation a lot but he has also used pictures of old and middle aged men and woman. There are rumors that he is very political which could explain one piece of his work which is a child holding a small flag but it is not confirmed. His pictures even though they are silhouetted display a lot of emotion in there design. Jasper said that he mould’s the body into the city so it fits like a jigsaw. In 2008, there was a influx of people living in urban areas which outweighed the amount of people living in rural areas. This was the fact that more people found the urban area more interesting. Jasper James’s images serve the purpose of personifying his subjects he blends the human form into the surroundings which in turn gives the impression they are all one.
Stephen Banham Stephen Banham is an Australian typographer, type designer, writer, lecturer and founder of Letterbox, a typographic studio. The company letterbox which Stephen Banham founded is known throughout the world for its use of typhography in the media industry. I feel if these designs were added to my work they could imrove on the typhography side of the peice.
Comparison Country Living Magazine Inc I wanted to look at another Magazine which i could take insparation from and i ended up looking at the work of Country living. Country living is the complete polar opposite of the magazine i am wanting to create it focusses more on the slower more deailed life of the country. But whilst taking a look at there homepage i realised that there are many things i can take as inspiration. For example there website homepage takes a nicer greener approach and the colour usage defintitely fits in with what the magazine is trying to create. The front cover is filled with a nice tea set and buttered scones, which is fufillng to the eye of someone who enjoys the slower paced life. The people of Liverpool to them, this would not appeal as it is not in there life style. I would need to take a different approach when createing my magazine, Including different font and a more city influenced eye catcher.
Arnaud Mercier Now this is a funny one because Arnaud Mercier never really did Magazine design however is use of colour in his pieces could help towards me come up with a final way to print out my design. His use of colour in images and the way he sets them up is unparalleled. He has many different types of work but the one I am most interested in looking at is his work called Oil. This piece is very much set out like a magazine cover and the way he has done it inspires to what I wish to put into my work. The piece is set out very much like the rest of his work when it comes down to it. He uses the same colour saturation but I feel that if I could follow his design for this piece On Liverpool I could really improve on it a considerable amount. Arnaud Mercier was born May 10 1972, He was a French Graphic Designer and web developer. He was best known for his interactive design systems. He was the founder of a design studio called Elixir studio and co-founder of the site known as Area 17. His work is very interesting in the way it is created as it is a very simple design. It uses pictures that he has shot from across the globe and edits them to improve the lighting and the overall quality. The colour and lighting he uses is absolutely fantastic. In one piece of his work which I will show below. He uses an escalator but the way its coloured is fantastic. It uses very rich deep, dark colours to emphasize the heavy metallic feel in which the elevator has.
Visit Liverpool The Website visit Liverpool is always well and truly working my idea is to design a brand new front cover for a magazine. Just looking through the website a seeing a rich variety of stuff to work with. The website is there to help and promote tourism in the area, so there are many images on fine dining and things to do. In the Christmas period there use of images turns to the more festive side. So i think for my idea I’m going to make a cover for each point Season in Liverpool.
The images used in these two photos show Liverpool through another light. They are both from the same website but display very different messages. They both have a good use of typography and photography which show a very interesting yet good design which I want to incorporate into my work . In my magazine i want to incorporate the design which they have used into my work.
Magazine Covers I wanted to take a look at how other magazines use art and imagery to pomote a magzine about the city. The german magazine Time uses a similar approach to what i want to accomplish by using images which are set in a small location. Many of the images i will be using have a small space to work with which i feel these images complement well.
Aranud Mercier Experimintation Alex Earps- City in flux I tried to look at ways in which i could design the magazine using the images i had taken in liverpool and placing them into the style of Arnaud Mercier. I took his idea for using colours and typhography and added it into my work. The background experimintation for my peice was very important.
Landscape Experimintaion I started to look at the other way i could approach this. I thought about doing the cover landscape and i started to experiment with the images still in the style of arnaud mercier. I used the idea of his colour saturation and typhography to place together these two designs. I like the way they came out but i feel that for a visit liverpool they need to show a bigger sight than just stairs or shops.
