This thesis proposes to reactivate neighborhoods of downtown cities through the use of developing a mixed-income residential hub including mixed-use services designed specifically for the area and it’s residents. They act as an outdoor living space and community center with the live-work studio apartments as living space as well as a place of business to purchase art of all ranges while also offering classroom spaces for the artists to hold work shops and teach local children in the area their techniques.

Theoretical Solutions for creating an Active and Responsive Sustainable Building This project’s focus was to create an active neighborhood that attracts people to live in the downtown area and to enjoy a vibrant destination. This phase of the design uses existing theoretical concepts merely to illustrate the next step this project would take for creating a responsive building.
Green Roofs, or living walls, are great for water collection and insulating the top floors. This project utilizes green roofs on each building to act as private space for the residents and as a way to promote sustainable living. These Green Roofs act as gardens and collect water to be used in throughout the building while the run off is used as an added sources of water for the green wall.

So, once the design for creating an active community has been fully developed, the next step is how best to make the architecture work for the user. This phase in the design process includes theoretical design ideas that help push the concept of activating the community and promoting sustainable living by creating a piece of architecture that responds to the environment and climate. These concepts include the use of kinetic panels, solar panels, green walls and green roofs.

The green wall is made of three layers, one interior slot to hold the soil and roots, and the other two act as openings for growth of the vegetation. The triangular panels pointing down have a fold out to gather rain water for the plants but to also gather facade runoff and make for drier passage for users of the building.

The concrete panels were designed large to hold the weight of plant life but to also help soundproof the building as it has major transportation adjacent to it and is in a very lively neighborhood that hosts many events.

Exterior Kinetic Panel Wall Section: Responsive Folding Scale: 1” = 10’ These panels are active surfaces that fold in and out based on the position of the sun, allowing the right amount of sunlight into each space based on the time of day. Each panel is controlled by it’s central point. This control point pushes and pulls the panel in the direction of the sun, blocking heat from the interior. Each panel is made of five layers of ETFE Foil in varying colors to add to the vibrancy of the project. For the that do not need to move near the exterior residency corridor, the ETFE panels will be more sparse and leaves room for more development of green space levels and balconies as this design phase continues. Along with ETFE Foils, creating thermally active surfaces in the concrete ceilings, floors, and walls will have a large impact on cost, freeing up surface area, and sustainable methods for heating and cooling the spaces. Hydronic tubing laid inside of the concrete slabs that is linked to an underground water pump heats the space by sending warm and cool water through the tubes. The theory behind this method is to keep the floor close to body temperature while the other surfaces in theroom are cooler to attract body heat to travel to the cooler surfaces. Heat transfers from it’s current warm host to a cooler one, so creating walls and ceilings cooler than the body attracts body heat to transfer from the body to these surfaces. Maintaing a warmer floor will help keep the space comfortable while also allowing the heat to rise.
