The focus of this collaborative urban studio is to revitalize this southern Savannah neighborhood. The southern part of Savannah is not as structured as the Historic District and is viewed as unsafe. The goal is to bring life, security and Savannah back to the area.

VISION AND GOALS PEDESTRIAN FRIENDLY:

MONTOGMERY STREET

Our team want to keep the standard building setback to keep a good flow of movement on the street, as it is jagged at the moment. We also want to improve the street lighting, to give the street a feel of security. We also want to expand the tree cover to provide more pedestrian friendly sidewalks.

BICYCLE ROUTES:

The Neighbourhood is currently not easily traversed by Cyclists. Bike lanes will be added to major pathways including Montgomery and 40th streets.

MIXED-USE COMMERCIAL (MONTGOMERY STREET):

REVITALIZED PARK

New construction on Montgomery Street will focus on infilling the parking lots with mixed use buildings containing store front retail and apartments.

PUBLIC POCKETS:

In continuing to make the area pedestrian friendly, throughout the commercial development on Montgomery street, there will be pockets for pedestrians to meet up and relax.

PARKS AS COMMUNITY GATHERING SPACES:

In redesigning the current parks on the site, we will provide them with the amenities to host public gatherings and events such as basketball tournaments, concerts, BB-Q’s or outdoor film screenings.

COVERED MARKET

COMMUNITY GARDEN-COVERED MARKET:

There is already an existing community garden on the site. We will create a second one on southern Montgomery Street and the two will help provide produce for our proposed covered market on 40th Street and bring more awareness to the already growing retail area.

The River Arts District Artists Center

THE FOCUS:

The focus of this project was to redefine the River Arts District of Asheville, NC. This district has a group of differing artists studios with great expanses of land between each location. The area is large but is very sparse. A challenge with the site itself is the sloping topography separated by train tracks with the southwestern part of the site sitting in the flood plain. With these forces acting on the site, the goal of this project is to create a cohesive community that helps cultivate the artists in the district. For the final project, only the Cultural Arts Center was designed.

CONCEPT: BRIDGING For this project I focused on the idea of bridging as a connector. When trying to understand the culture of the area and figure out how to bring the residential and artist communities together, the idea of bridging over the obstacles (the train tracks) really struck me as a bold move. By creating a bridge attached to three major artist centers that specialize in different areas of attraction, this gives choices to the people to visit rather than one and draws in more than one type of user.

THE 3 ATTRACTIONS AND SERVICES: THE CULINARY INSTITUTE: This food center focus’s on teaching culinary arts and letting the students serve the public as if they were running a real restaurant. This center has a temporary Fresh Grocer Market and Art Supply Market every Saturday with an addition of community gardens to supply fresh vegetables for the restaurant as an accessory to the area.

PERFORMING ARTS CENTER: The Performing Arts Center is designed for a theatre company who needs a building that works with them. There are tech and woodshop spaces with an elevator that goes up to the backstage theatre above. There are pracice rooms and an outdoor theatre space on the top level for students and performers to have practice sessions and lounge areas. Along with these types of spaces to help the performers and their productions, there is also gallery space for costumes and props made by the theatre company that allows them to showcase their physical work and labor that goes into a production for the stage.

THE CHALLENGE This project was all about collaboration. Studio I and Studio IV were broken up into ten teams. The challenge was not merely cohesively working with a peer but to also collaborate with the adjacent neighboring projects to make create a cohesive project along the Seine River.

THE SPECIFICATIONS Building Type: Residential Size/Scale: 1000 SF MAX/Apartment Site: Seine River, Paris, France Program: Studio Apartments Market Place Roof Garden Outdoor Plaza

THE FOCUS Our inspiration started with Les Docks designed by Jakob and McFarlane. The next inspiration was the surrounding context. With this in mind, our focus became on creating a space with a program that was needed in the area and that also challenged the context.

The development of an architecture of continuity begins with the solid/void language of the formal existing forms of the Pont du Bercy and the Ministere des Finances, acting upon the site. The formal language and geometries of these forms affect an inverse reaction on the site, allowing the design to respond with contrasting strategies: where there is solid, there will be void, and vice versa. By mirroring the Ministere des Finances vertical qualities a tower began to evolve and fragmentation by the creation of three-dimensional voids start occurring. The initial formal and solemn articulation would transform in a pliant architecture that generates smoothness by the introduction of the secondary force, the ‘plug over’, which geometry at first rotates and mirrors creating a vertical skin. Later, the new plug-over, began deforming and changing by rotating and scaling. The third force, the Seine River, allows the design for an aesthetic effect of fluid ripples and pinches on the external skin. Continuity is created through this aesthetic language throughout the design.

MARIA GRATA, THE REVEAL Paparacchi New York Flagship

THE CHALLENGE There is a lot of competing high-end flagship stores in the area. They are the best of the best. Its a cut throat profession. The objective of this project is to capture the essence of the client’s collection and make a flagship retail store/ headquarters in SOHO for them.

THE FOCUS The main focus of the studio was analyzing the parallels between fashion and architecture. The next step was creating a building with the strict zoning and restrictions set by the city of New York while still expressing the fashion through the architecture.

REVERSE SYMBOSIS

A Wedding Chapel for Graceland

The Challenge Graceland is the home of the beloved Elvis Presley, yet when driving through the area, one would not know the King once lived here. There is a strip mall full of museums and giftshops where one can experience Elvis and purchase memorabilia, but this place is not memorable. The buildings are dull, white boxes. Our initiative is to make a wedding chapel at Graceland that becomes a landmark for the area.

Massing: Addressing the Corner The design idea behind the massing model was to have the smallest footprint on the site as possible. I wanted this becasuse I wanted the larger volume to hover above the site to create small spaces underneath .

The Focus On this project, our main focus was on the surfaces, patterns, textures, and culture found at Gracleand to hold our inspiration for our overall design. From how we approached massing, orientation, aesthetics, and circulation to and from the site, everything we researched and analized about Elvis, his home, and the culture of Memphis, TN was emphasized in our design process and end product.

STICK MODEL I

This is the first stick model made. It is the framework of the massing model. Nothing changed, nothing altered, just a basic replica of the massing model.
