Feeling Stressed? It Could Be Destroying Your Bones

The holidays are prime time for stress—family gatherings, endless to-do lists, and the pressure to make everything perfect. But before you lose it—here are 3 time-tested tricks to melt away holiday stress fast!

One thing is guaranteed during the holidays: stress. And when stress becomes chronic, it can negatively impact your mental and physical health—and that includes your bones!

You see, stress interferes with a crucial process called bone remodeling. Your bones are constantly renewing themselves through the activity of two key cells —osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Osteoblasts build new bone, while osteoclasts break down old bone.

Excess cortisol. That’s the stress hormone your body pumps out when you’re under pressure. And when cortisol levels spike, it interrupts your gut’s ability to absorb calcium. Josh's greatest joy comes from his beautiful, little daughter. “My days revolve around her and making sure she is living the happiest life possible.”

Some people are born to make a difference. That's the first thing you notice about Josh McDonald, whose warmth and enthusiasm radiate through every conversation. After nearly six years of working as a Bone Health Consultant, his passion for helping others hasn't dimmed one bit.

“Speaking to our customers is such an amazing opportunity,” Josh says, his face lighting up. “It’s so rewarding when we get to follow up with the same customers down the road and celebrate their amazing increases in bone density!”

Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Josh's early life was fueled by dreams of professional hockey. From the tender age of two, he was on ice skates, pursuing his NHL ambitions with characteristic determination. But life had other plans. After several concussions, he had to reinvent himself. That's when Josh discovered his true calling—helping others.

1 Tbsp maple syrup

1 egg white

4 oz sparkling water

½ cup ice

1. Combine the lemon juice, maple syrup and egg white in a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously.

2. Fill the shaker with ice and shake for 30 seconds until the shaker begins to build condensation.

3. Strain into a glass and top with sparkling water.

4. Spoon any remaining foam from the cocktail shaker into the glass and serve!

2 lb Cowboy Steak (Bone in Rib Steak)

1 Tbsp grass-fed butter

1 Tbsp avocado oil

2 cloves garlic

1 sprig of rosemary

1 sprig of thyme

Salt and pepper to taste

Smoked salt, optional for garnish

1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

2. In an oven safe skillet, over low heat, add butter, oil, garlic, rosemary and thyme.

3. Allow the fats to bubble and take on the flavors of the herbs and garlic for approximately 2-3 minutes, ensuring that the garlic does not burn.

4. Remove the herbs and garlic and set aside on a plate. Turn the heat up to medium until the butter and oil begin to foam, but not burn.

5. Pat the steak with a paper towel to remove moisture, and season with salt and pepper on each side and edges of the steak.

6. Place the steak in the skillet and begin basting the steak with the butter and oil for two minutes. Turn the steak over and repeat the process on the other side.

7. Place pan in the oven and allow to cook until the steak reaches an internal temperature of 130°F. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for 5 minutes. The steak will continue to cook during this process to approximately 140°F, which is the top end of medium rare verging on medium.

8. Slice the steak off the bone and slice into ½” pieces. Serve with your favorite side dishes.

1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Slice acorn squash into 1” thick slices.

3. In a small saucepan, over medium heat, combine the maple syrup, butter, cinnamon, cloves, and salt. Allow to simmer for approximately 5 minutes, stirring constantly, until it thickens.

4. Place squash slices on a sheet pan and brush with maple syrup mixture.

5. Roast for 15-20 minutes until caramelized and soft. Enjoy!

I enjoy a glass of red wine with dinner. Is this bad for my bones?, asked Diane, a valued member of The AlgaeCal Community since 2019. That's an important question, Diane! We’ll let Lara answer that one.

“Well, it depends on how much you drink and how often you drink. Chronic heavy drinking is bad news for bones. When alcohol replaces dinner, you don’t get the nutrients your bones must have to rebuild and maintain themselves. And alcohol must be detoxified by your liver. Too much wipes out the liver’s supplies of glutathione, the body’s most important antioxidant, and then destroys the liver’s ability to eliminate not just alcohol, but everything else we need to clear.

That ramps up inflammation, big time! And chronic inflammation ramps up osteoclast production and bone-resorbing activity. So, not surprisingly, excessive alcohol consumption has been repeatedly associated with low bone mineral density.

Moderate alcohol consumption, however, is good for your bones and lowers your risk for hip fracture, whether you’re a woman or a man. The data that confirms this was collected on a massive study of 113,578 people over a 34-year period:

When drinking patterns were analyzed for both women and men, the lowest hip fracture risks were seen when women consumed moderate amounts of alcohol 3–4 days/week and men consumed moderate amounts 5–7 days/week.

How much is “moderate”? For women: one 4 to 6-ounce glass of wine or an 8-ounce glass of beer, and for men, two equivalent drinks per day.

So, relax Diane. You can toast your bones’ health this Christmas with a moderate amount of alcohol.
