Virginia’s Masroor Mosque Inaugurated

Hadith-e-Rasul – Sayings of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa

Dearest Deed to Allah Hazrat Abdullah, Allah be pleased with him, narrates: “I asked the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, ‘Which deed is the dearest to Allah?’ He replied, ‘To offer the prayers at their fixed times.’ I asked, ‘What is the next (in goodness)?’ He replied, ‘To be good and dutiful to your parents.’ I again asked, ‘What is the next (in goodness)?’ He replied, ‘To participate in Jihad in Allah’s cause.’” Abdullah added, “I asked only that much and if I had asked more, the Holy Prophetsa would have told me more.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab Mawaqit al-Salat)

Islam’s Example of Patience is Exemplary

azrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih V graced the H inauguration reception of Masroor aa

Mosque, South Virginia, USA on the evening of Saturday, 3 November. The property where Masroor Mosque is now situated was first built as a church around ten years ago. The Ahmadiyya Jamaat purchased this land in November 2017. The mosque is on a stretch of 17 acres of land and is meant to serve the nearly 1,000 Ahmadis who live in the region, as well as a beacon of light for all residents in the area. The highlight of the reception was the address delivered by Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa.

After explaining how the true Islam, the Holy Quran and the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa inculcated living harmoniously with fellow beings and to promote peace and tolerance in the world, Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa explained that Islam had to defend itself in the early days as it was facing not an attack on Islam, but an attack on religion and faith. To safeguard not only Islam, but the beliefs of other religions, Muslims had to resort to self-defence. Addressing the guests who came to attend the reception, Huzooraa said: “Certainly, I hope and expect that in your interaction with Ahmadi Muslims in the past, you will only have felt a spirit of love and respect from them towards

you. Now this mosque has been officially opened. This spirit will only increase, and our message of peace and humanity will reverberate ever louder and echo in all directions. The local Ahmadi Muslims will intensify their efforts to fulfil the rights of neighbours of this mosque.” Huzooraa further added: “I should clarify that our neighbours are not only those who live close to the mosque or close to the homes of Ahmadi Muslims, rather the circle of neighbours, according to the Holy Quran, spreads much further afield and includes a person’s colleagues, subordinates, travel companions and many other people besides.” Continued on page 5

Islam excels all other faiths in the demonstration it provides of patience, rejecting evil and noble conduct. It would be foolish, unfortunate and wrong for Muslims to abandon this example. May God bring these ignorant maulavis back to the right path. They have misled the populace into believing that the keys to Paradise lie in beliefs that are oppressive, cruel and completely immoral. Can it be a good deed to shoot a complete stranger, intending to kill him while he is absorbed in thought? Is this religiousness? If these are acts of any virtue then animals are more virtuous than human beings. (Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas, The British Government and Jihad, pp. 13-14)

Friday 9 November 2018 | AL HAKAM

This Week in History 9-15 November 9 November 1905: Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the Promised Messiah and Imam Mahdi, peace be upon him, was in Amritsar and delivered a lecture here. For this purpose, a lecture hall of Advocate Rai Kunahya Lal was booked. The lecture began at 8am, but opponents of the Promised Messiahas began to disrupt this blessed event with their uncivilized behaviour. He started his journey towards Batala soon afterwards. Hazrat Ahmadas himself narrates, “I saw a sugar cane in my dream, the general interpretation of which is some mischief or disturbance. This was accompanied by the revelation, ‘Inni ma‘a al-Rasuli aqumu’ [I shall stand with My Messenger].” Al Hakam added: “This dream and revelation was narrated by him before the lecture. The lecture was delivered in full in half an hour. The shortsighted opponents and troublemakers tried to create such disturbance that they imagined that they had succeeded in their evil design.” 10 November 1889: The Promised Messiahas reached Qadian from Ludhiana. 10 November 1905: The Promised Messiahas started his journey towards Qadian from Batala at 8am and reached his destination around 12pm. 11 November 1888: Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was born on this day. He was an Indian scholar and the senior Muslim leader of the Indian National Congress during the Indian independence movement. Following India’s independence, he became the first minister of education in the Indian government. One narration suggests that he travelled to Lahore and followed the entourage that carried the body of Hazrat Ahmadas until Batala, when the coffin of the Promised Messiahas was being shifted from Lahore to Qadian via train. 12 November 1899: A small but prestigious gathering was designed in Qadian on this day in connection to the departure of a research delegation. A proposed party of learned companions

was to travel to the Middle East to collect fresh evidence and properly record and fortify the already available facts regarding the historic escape journey of Jesusas from his home town towards Kashmir. This assembly was named the “Farewell Jalsa”. 12 November 1893: A single page agreement was signed on this day, which gave birth to the famous Durand Line (borderline between Afghanistan and Pakistan). This accord was reached between Sir Mortimer Durand, a British diplomat and civil servant of the British Raj, and Abdur Rahman Khan, the Afghan Amir, to fix the limit of their respective spheres of influence and improve diplomatic relations and trade. The Afghan side was represented by Hazrat Sahibzada Abdul Latifra (who later did Bai‘at of Hazrat Ahmadas and was martyred in Kabul) with others dignitaries. The original 1893 agreement was written in English, with translated copies in Dari. 14 November 1899: The abovementioned “Farewell Jalsa” was continued in Qadian. On this day, the Promised Messiahas delivered a speech that hallmarked important guidelines for researches to come. 15 November 1895: The Promised Messiahas issued an announcement regarding his upcoming research monographs (Sat Bachan and Arya Dharam). These books were published during this month. 15 November 1901: Hazrat Nawab Muhammad Ali Khanra reached Qadian with a phonograph on this day. It was the latest technology available to save sound recordings. The Promised Messiahas spared his time after Asr prayer to examine this device. Hazrat Maulvi Abdul Karim Sialkotira recorded two cylinders in his melodious voice. 15 November 1906: The nikah of Hazrat Ahmad’s son, Hazrat Mirza Sharif Ahmadra, was announced on this day with Hazrat Bu Zainab Bibira, daughter of Hazrat Nawab Muhammad Ali Khanra. The marriage ceremony took place after 3 years.

The Love of God hildren who love both their parents often find it difficult C to answer the question: “Who do you love more, mummy or daddy?” This question is often met with a perplexed look

at both mummy and daddy as they try to muster up the right answer that can make both equally happy. The answers that entail usually work well. As long as only mother and father are in question, issues don’t get as complex as they can get in certain situations. Huzoor’s recent Friday Sermon, delivered at Baitur Rahman USA on 2 November 2018, pointed to one such situation where love can leave one confused if asked a similar question: “Do you love the Khalifa more or the Holy Prophetsa?” or, “Who do you love more, the Khalifa or the God that the Khalifa is representative of?” Huzooraa drew our attention to this issue that could apparently seem only a confusion but could lead to grave deviations and innovations in one’s belief, should one not set right the direction of their thought process. Huzooraa said that although the majority of the Jamaat was clear on “who is who and what is what” when it comes to understanding the status of holy personages, but if there are any who do not know who stands where, they should immediately rectify such a perversion. Huzooraa further clarified that if anyone had fallen prey to this misunderstanding where they are placing the Khalifa of the time, or any other holy person, over and above Allah the Almighty, they are doing so in their own confusion. Huzooraa said that neither him nor any other Khalifa before him had ever steered the Jamaat in such a wrong direction and that whosoever thinks along such a path was committing shirk [associating partners with Allah]. Let’s take a quick look at what Huzooraa has always stood for. Almost every Friday Sermon delivered by Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa ends with a prayer to Allah the Almighty e.g. “may Allah enable us to understand the true spirit of the teachings of Islam”; “may Allah enable us to follow the examples set by the Companionsra of the Holy Prophetsa”; “may Allah forgive our shortcomings and enable us to tread the path of taqwa” etc. Not only does this show that he wants us to pray to the Omnipotent God, but Huzooraa is always submitting himself to the will of God. We write to Huzooraa for prayers, and he writes back to us saying I pray to Allah the Almighty that may he fulfil your desire. On many occasions, Huzooraa has told us to pray to Allah ourselves even if we are writing to Huzooraa for prayers in a certain matter. If we have love in our heart for Hazrat Khalifatul Masih, it is a great blessing of Allah; we are loving the one that Allah chose to love. This makes our love for our beloved Imam a valuable asset and should be placed above all other sentiments. Now, coming back to the question of how we know if our love for our beloved Imam is in the right direction, the answer is very simple. The first touchstone could be that if we are obeying, or trying our utmost to obey what Hazrat Khalifatul Masih asks of us, the direction obviously is right because Huzoor is always calling us to the One God and His messenger, Hazrat Muhammad Rasulullahsa. One other way is to see if through our claim of love for Hazrat Khalifatul Masih we are growing in our love for the Promised Messiahas, the Holy Prophetsa and Allah the Almighty; the three lighthouses that the ship of Khilafat sails us to. Love for Khilafat is directly proportional to the love of God. A person who is immersed in the love of God cannot be loved without loving the being that God loves more than anything and anyone. Alhamdolillah, we have a Khalifa. A Khalifa that is a beacon of light. The nearer we get to him, the closer we get to the Source of light; closer to Allah; closer to the Light of all the worlds.

TAhmadiyya for the year 1932-33 includes he Annual Report of Sadr Anjuman

a report sent by Sufi Muti-ur-Rahman Bengali Sahib, who was then a missionary in the USA. He writes:

Sufi Muti-ur-Rahman Bengali Sahib

“During the year, 115 lectures were delivered at various clubs, churches and societies with the number of audiences ranging between 500 and 3,000. Fifteen of these lectures focused on the life of the Holy Prophetsa – a topic, for obvious reasons, of great importance in this day and age and the best approach in the propagation of Islam. Such absurdities are attributed to the character of the Holy Prophetsa that the image of Islam is badly distorted; it is only through presenting to the public the true beautiful character of the Holy Prophetsa that the allegations can be addressed.” The report goes on to mention some notable societies where he had had the chance to speak before the American public. His journeys that he undertook for the purpose of tabligh have also been listed in the report with cities like New York, Jersey City, Springfield,

Jenkintown, Pendle Hill, Southmore, Huntington Valley, Philadelphia, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Cleveland and Indianapolis listed. Sufi Sahib, alongside speech, used his pen to propagate Islam in the United States. We learn from this report that he was writing articles and letters to newspapers primarily to answer allegations against Islam. From the list of newspapers and magazines, some are listed below: Springfield Union, The Morning Call, Friends Intelligencer, Cleveland Press, Chicago Defender, The Daily Times, The Howard Times, The Chicago Tribune, The Public Ledger, Detroit News, The Detroit Times. He touches upon the success that was met by The Moslem Sunrise – a magazine launched by Hazrat Mufti Muhammad Sadiqra. Sufi Sahib wrote in his report that the publication of The Moslem Sunrise was being funded by the local members of the community and was functioning as a vehicle to carry the message of Islam to the length and breadth of the USA. The magazine, he reported, was being sent abroad as well and was rapidly gaining popularity. The efforts of the early missionaries of Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya in the United States is covered by many academic works on the topic of Islam in America. We quote below a part of how The Cambridge Companion to American Islam sees these humble efforts that bore magnificent fruits for Islam in America: “The earliest missionary movement in the United States to emphasize Islamic identity was the Ahmadiyya movement, which had originated as a Muslim response to Christian missionaries in South Asia. The leading Ahmadiyya representative in America, Mufti Muhammad Sadiq, was awarded degrees from the College of Divine Metaphysics, a New-Thought-oriented institution, and the Oriental University, which was affiliated with the spiritualist Universal Theomonistic Association. His successor, Sufi M Bengalee, gave speeches with New Thought-inspired

the afternoon of Tuesday 6 November, Iat thenHazrat Khalifatul Masih V safely arrived Fazl Mosque, London from his threeaa

week tour of the Americas.

Huzooraa was greeted by hundreds of local Ahmadis who congregated at the Fazl Mosque. Alhamdolillah, all praise belongs to Allah, that Huzoor arrived safely and the tour was extremely successful and historic. During his visit to the United States, by the grace of Allah, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa inaugurated three Mosques: Baitul Aafiyat, Baitus Samad and Masroor Mosque. Following a busy schedule, Huzooraa also met with local dignitaries, officials and hundreds of Ahmadi Muslims. During his tour, Huzoor travelled to central America, Guatemala for the first time, making this a unique and historic tour. In Guatemala, Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa inaugurated the Nasir Hospital and titles such as “The Supreme Success in Life” and “The Object of Life: Spiritual Progress and the Means of Accomplishing It” at Spiritualist churches in Chicago. “The Ahmadiyya newspaper, Moslem Sunrise, presented Islam as the fulfilment of the unity of religions and the culmination of an ongoing spiritual evolution that included not only Judaism and Christianity but also Hinduism, Buddhism, and Zoroastrianism. “The Moslem Sunrise regularly featured announcements of new conversions (listing converts by both their “American” and “Moslem” names, as well as articles and letters by converts. Several frequent themes in Moslem Sunrise would be featured in the Sunni apologetic discourse and pamphlet literature of later decades, including the status of women in Islam, Islamic contributions to science and philosophy, and presentations of Islam as the true religion of Jesus; a message of peace and equality and the solution to color prejudice, with special significance placed on the story of Bilal ibn Rabah, Muhammad’s Ethiopian companion and the first muezzin, as evidence of Islam’s inherent antiracism.” Writing about the Jazz musicians that converted to Islam in the second and third decades of the twentieth century, The Cambridge Companion to American Islam says: “Almost all entered the religion through

delivered the keynote address at the event. In the address, Huzoor emphasised that Islam demanded from a true believer to always be ready to serve humanity, regardless of faith or race. In this manner, and throughout the course of Huzoor’s stay in Guatemala, the message of Islam Ahmadiyyat reached Central America for the first time directly from Hazrat Khalifatul Masih in the fifth Khilafat. Huzooraa has expressed on many occasions that the reason for such tours is not just for Huzoor to meet Ahmadis all over the world, but also to give the chance to Ahmadis who are unable to travel to the UK to meet their beloved Imam. At times, it is noticed that such people come from far and wide to meet their Imam who have never before had the delight of meeting a Khalifatul Masih. Thus, this is a two-way love between the Imam and his Jamaat, something that was once again witnessed during Huzoor’s 3-week tour of the Americas. the Ahmadiyya movement, a group Richard Brent Turner has called ‘unquestionably one of the most significant movements in the history of Islam in the United States in the twentieth century, providing … the first multiracial model for American Islam’ [emphasis in original]. “Founded by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the Ahmadiyya was a South Asiabased missionary movement that appealed to Black Americans because of its racially inclusive doctrines, ambitious internationalist scope, and notion of continuous prophecy. To these musicians, Ahmadiyya Islam was ‘a force which directly opposed the deterioration of the mind and body through either spiritual or physical deterrents’, a respite from racism, nights in smoke-filled clubs, and the perils of drugs and alcohol. At the same time, as trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie noted in his autobiography… ‘Man, if you join the Muslim faith, you ain’t colored no more, you’ll be white. You get a new name and you won’t be a nigger no more.’ “In the 1920s, African American Ahmadiya mosques sprang up in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Dayton, and smaller cities.” (Passages quoted are from The Cambridge Companion to American Islam, by Juliane Hammer and Omid Safi, Cambridge University Press, 2013)

Friday 9 November 2018 | AL HAKAM Arab and a lady joined Islam Ahmadiyyat, Alhamdolillah.

News from England and Mauritius Al Fazl, 9 November 1918

Letter from Hazrat Mufti Muhammad Sadiqra Dear Brothers, Assalamo Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon you). Life is brimmed with wonders. Looking at the distance between Qadian and England, never did I imagine that I would ever, after travelling and voyaging vast oceans, arrive in England. I have studied Arabic, yet [my Arabic was of such a level that] among the Maulvis I was not a Maulvi. I have studied English, but cannot be called an Englishman. But God has His ways. If He so wills, He would command the sand

particles to render the works of a mountain and form a sea out of a droplet of water. I left my hometown, resigning from work and set up a temporary abode in Qadian, waiting for the day when I, with firm faith, would meet my end and be buried at the feet of the Promised Messiahas. Every funeral prayer led by the Promised Messiahas or his Khilafas was a cause of envy for me, as I longed that every grave [upon which they prayed] was mine. But these were just desires I had in my heart. Little did I know that God had ordained for me to serve His religion, or you may say that some religious service be attributed to me. From India, I – someone who had never even delivered a lecture in English – settled in England, and day and night, I was tasked to debate, speak, deliver speeches and live among the Englishmen. I am a person who, even during the summer am accustomed to sleeping indoors, however, I was ordered to live in one of the coldest countries. It is

through the blessings of the second Khilafat that an unworthy and useless person becomes worthy and useful. Otherwise, I know my limitations. After a period of waiting, I received letters from India on 10 September 1918, dated between 14-24 July. I have not yet received any letter from 1-14 July. I am thankful to those who write to me. After receiving the letters, I offered two rak‘at [units of prayer] and prayed.

Tabligh in England Respected Qazi Abdullah Sahib BA writes in his recent letter: The lecture which took place in Newcastle on 14 July was especially very successful. One lady accepted Islam; her Muslim name is Amina. Three gentlemen signed the Bai‘at form. After this, I delivered lectures in South Shields, North Shields and […]. In South Shields, three Indians, one

n the occasion of the National WaqfO e-Nau Ijtema 2018, Hazrat Amirul Momineen, Khalifatul Masih V , said: aa

“In terms of tabligh, from a young age Waqifeen-e-Nau should have the habit of spreading the message of Islam. Thus, at weekends or during holidays, you should do tabligh and play your role in defending Islam from the false allegations that are levelled against it. Both the Jamaat and Majlis Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya should host tabligh functions and events and so you should offer your services and try to help as much as possible.” On the morning of 24 October 2018, 23 Waqifeen-e-Nau gathered at the Fazl Mosque to embark on a historic trip to

southern Spain. After being briefed about the importance of this trip, the group set off to London Stansted Airport. Upon arrival at Malaga Airport, they were welcomed by Qaisar Mahmood Malik Sahib who took the group to Masjid Basharat, Pedro Abad. Before departing, one Waqf-e-Nau, Aosaf Ahmad Basra said: “I wanted to go on this trip because it is a trip organised by the Jamaat and as a Waqfe-Nau I want to be a part of a group that is going for the sole purpose of experiencing Spain with the spirit the Jamaat has in terms of brotherhood. And for me, it is a blessed trip not like any other trips. It is a trip where I can go and spread the message of Islam and learn from other Waqifeen-e-Nau as well as from the Jamaat. And as a guest of

The Imam of Saint Pierre Mosque Last year, the Imam of Saint Pierre Mosque raised an outcry against the Jamaat for offering Salat in the [above mentioned] mosque. Not even a year has passed and the aforementioned Imam has lost mental stability and has been admitted into a psychiatric hospital. This was shown as a sign of warning from God, when the opponents of the Jamaat started a case against the Rose Hill Mosque.

the Jamaat, it is an honour for me to go. The aim for me for this trip is to make myself a better Ahmadi, a better Waqfe-Nau and to realise what I can do in the world in terms of my duty and my obligations as an Ahmadi.” The Waqifeen-e-Nau started each day by offering the Tahajjud and Fajr prayer. After having breakfast, they would visit different historical sites according to their timetable. The trip started with the city of Seville where they began to see the Cathedral. It was originally built by Muslims during the Islamic empire as the main Mosque of Seville, which over time has become one of the largest churches. From there, they moved on to see the Real Alcazar, which was the King’s palace. Each day after visiting the respected heritage sites, they would spend time doing tabligh by distributing leaflets to the public and involving in one-to-one discussions. On the third day, the group visited the Great Mosque of Cordoba which at one time was the largest mosque in the world. A Waqf-e-Nau named Faran Ahmad described his observations in the following words: “I have really enjoyed looking at the calligraphy… and have learnt that it was once made by Muslims.” Another Waqf-e-Nau, Kaleem Ahmad, commented whilst visiting “Medina Azahara” (ruins of a vast, fortified Moorish medieval palace-city): “I have been here before but have not seen this place, so it is a different and unique experience, especially enjoying my time

with all the brothers.” Another important aspect worth mentioning is that the Waqifeen also had the chance to go and pray at the grave of Maulana Karam Ilahi Zafar Sahib, the pioneering missionary of Spain. One of the sites Waqifeen-e-Nau managed to visit was Alhambram, which is a palace and fortress complex located in Granada. Seeing the site, a Ziaullah Ehsan who also took part in the trip expressed his emotions in the following words: “Coming here, a person feels two profound emotions. One is a sense of great pride, witnessing how great and eminent the status of the Islamic Empire once was. However, alongside it, one also feels remorse and grief at how this once great kingdom of Muslims in Spain is no longer there.” He added: “Since the main purpose of our visit is the propagation of Islam, we are distributing flyers and leaflets. There is a great need for people to continue to come here and spread the message of Islam Ahmadiyya.” Waqifeen-e-Nau also had the opportunity to visit Gibraltar and the city of Malaga. A distinctive part of this trip was a sitting with Amir Sahib Spain in which he explained to us the history of Islam and Ahmadiyyat in Spain. Waqifeen-e-Nau offered all their prayers in congregation. 11 Waqifeen-eNau completed reading the book of the Promised Messiahas Noah’s Ark during this trip and every Waqf-e-Nau partook in tabligh through distributing leaflets. 3,500 leaflets were distributed in total from 24 October to 31 October 2018. This trip was organised by the department of Waqf-e-Nau in Majlis Khuddam-ulAhmadiyya UK.

Friday 9 November 2018 | AL HAKAM Divinity of Jesusas (Part V)

Jesusas Calls God “Abba”

Farhan Iqbal Missionary, Canada

reviously, in this series of articles, it was proven that Jesus never made the P claim that he was God. What is more is that as

the one place where Jesusas is confronted and accused of blasphemy and claiming to be God, he does not take the opportunity to affirm that the accuser is right and that he is indeed God (see John 10). Instead, he quotes from the scripture where others before him have also been called “gods” because they were recipients of revelation. In response to this, Christian apologists form their arguments in interesting ways. For instance, Mr William Lane Craig – a well-known scholar of Christianity – points out that the high Christological titles attributed to Jesusas “serve to express explicitly what Jesusas had already said about himself implicitly”. (Reasonable Faith – Christian Truth and Apologetics, p. 244) In my understanding, this statement represents a common theme used by Christian apologists to argue the divinity of Jesusas. Due to the lack of explicit statements of Jesusas on his divinity, arguments are made from statements which imply that Jesusas must have been God incarnate – or God “becoming flesh”. An example of this implication is the way Jesusas prayed to God by referring to Him as “abba” which no one else would do among the Jews of his time, as Craig argues (ibid.). He says that even though early Christians also prayed to God as “abba”, such usage was derived from Jesus’as own practice, and he never joined with them in praying “Our Father…”. He always referred to God as, “My Father” and made this distinction clear as mentioned in John 20:17, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father,

to my God and your God.” In other words, Jesus’as relationship with God the Father is different from the relationship of the disciples with God the Father. This argument actually stems from the writings of a German New Testament scholar Joachim Jeremias who wrote that Jesus’as usage of this term is similar to the way a child addresses his father. Later on, zealous apologists started saying that “abba” is similar to saying “daddy” or “papa” in order to bring home the point that Jesusas was uniquely intimate with God when he addressed Him as “abba”. In fact, this is a common argument that apologists use nowadays to provide evidence for the unique relationship of Jesusas with God, subsequently trying to prove that he was part of the “Godhead” or second member of the Trinity. The first problem with this argument is that sincere Christians themselves know the weakness of this argument and refute it (See an example here: www. thegospelcoalition.org/article/factcheckerdoes-abba-mean-daddy). In a blog entry made on arotau on 19 January 19 2013 (https://arotau.com/2013/01/19/ abba-isnt-daddy), the Christian author argues that the word “abba” was not a “particularly intimate term” and was not used by children alone. It was simply not a child’s term and there is debate about the development of the word. The author also quotes one scholar, Mr James Barr, who most vehemently opposed this argument, stating that there is no foundation for this. (James Barr, The Journal of Theological Studies 39, Oxford University Press, pp. 28-47) Secondly, a closer study of the 3 verses where this word is used demonstrates

further why this argument is not acceptable: 1. Mark 14:36: “He said, ‘Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want.’” 2. Romans 8:15: “For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’” 3. Galatians 4:6: “And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’” The first thing that is noticeable from these verses is that there is only one instance where Jesusas is directly quoted as using this term. It is assumed that Jesusas always addressed God as “abba” but this is based only on one verse in the gospel of Mark. The other two references are from the epistles of Paul.

The second thing to note is that every time this word is used, it is followed by the word “Father” as a translation. In the Journal of Biblical Literature, Mary Rose D’Angelo argues that the Greek authors of the Bible always placed the Greek words “ὁ πατήρ” (ho pater: Father) next to the word “abba” so that the reader would know what they mean by this usage. Had they desired to express that this word was equivalent to the way a child speaks to his father, they would have used the Greek equivalent which is πἀπας/πἀππας (papas). (Mary Rose D’Angelo, Abba and “father”: Imperial Theology and the Jesus Traditions, Journal of Biblical Literature 111, pp. 615-616) What is more is that the Greek definite article ὁ (ho) specifically means that this was a formal address to God the Father, far from being informal or casual like “daddy”. In other words, the argument that the usage of the term “abba” by Jesusas makes him uniquely intimate with God, unlike other Prophets or holy men, does not have any linguistic or scholastic base. Third, if Jesusas had been born without a father or mother and then referred to God as “abba”, it may have been a compelling case for the deity of Jesusas. However, the fact is that Jesusas had a mother as the Holy Quran points out: ٌَۡ ُُ ‫َوا ّم ٗه ِص ِّديق ‌ة‬ “And his mother was a truthful woman.” (Surah al-Maida, Ch.5: V.76) The Promised Messiahas explains this argument when he writes that it is absolutely clear that the children of a living being are born into their species. He argues: “Look at the numerous animals such as humans, horses, donkeys, every kind of bird – they are born into their specific species. It does not happen that a human is born out of a bird, or a human gives birth to a bird” (Jang-e-Muqaddas, Ruhani Khazain, Vol. 6, p. 10). As a result, since Jesusas was born of a mother, it should be clear that he was only a human being and not a different species. What is strange is that the apologists

6

Friday 9 November 2018 | AL HAKAM Continued from page 1

expect everyone to believe that Jesus is God because he addressed Him as “abba” while altogether neglecting the fact that Jesusas was born from the womb of a human mother. According to them, the use of a simple term like “abba” can prove Jesus’as unique relationship with God, but the fact that he was born of a woman does not have any weight! Finally, it is important to note that even if Jesusas uniquely used the word “abba” for God, it does not imply in any way that he had a special relationship with God because the lexicons do not give that much weight to the words “abba” or “father”. Every word must be judged based on the position assigned to it by a lexicon. It cannot be given more honour than a lexicon. In this case, the lexicon says that when a person is born of the seed of another, the person who drops the seed and has no further connection with his birth, is called his “abb” or father. The Promised Messiahas notes: “…we find that all the lexicon discloses as

is that when a person is in fact born of the seed of another, and he who drops the seed has no further connection with his birth, it is said that that other is his ‘abb’ [father]. If it should be desired to indicate that Almighty God is Himself the Conscious Creator of a person, and Himself leads him towards perfection, and out of His great mercy bestows appropriate bounties on him, and is Himself his Guardian and Supporter, the lexicon does not permit that these connotations may be expressed by the employment of the word ‘father’; the lexicon provides another term for the expression of this concept, and that word is ‘Rabb’… We are not at all entitled to invent our own lexicon, and must follow the division of words established by God from the beginning.” (Minan-ur-Rahman, Ruhani Khazain, Vol. 9, pp. 155-156) Based on this, it is hard to understand how the use of such a simple term like “abb” or “abba” can elevate a person to such a high status that he is believed to be the one and only Son of God.

Huzoor then prayed that the local Ahmadi Muslims lived up to what Huzooraa had said and that may they exercise the standards expected of Muslims. Reminding the congregation of the immense responsibility that today lies on not just believers in faith, but humans generally and this generation specifically, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa prayed: “From the depth of my heart, I pray that after we have departed this world, our children and future generations remember us with love and affection. May they affirm that their elders spared no effort to foster a spirit of love, peace and brotherhood amongst mankind, and to leave behind a peaceful and enlightened world. Surely, the alternative does not bear thinking about.” The event concluded with silent prayer led by Huzooraa after which dinner was served. Prior to Huzoor’s keynote address, a few dignitaries had the chance to speak before the congregation. Gerry Connolly, member of the United aa

States Congress for Virginia’s 11th district and co-author of the House Resolution welcoming Huzoor to the United States, said: “We welcome you in our midst. We celebrate your spiritual legacy and what it brings to our community. It makes us better too.” Dr Katrina Lantos Swett, President of the Lantos Foundation for Human Rights & Justice and former chair of United States Commission on International Religious Freedom, said: “I have had the wonderful opportunity of being with His Holiness on, I think now, four or five occasions over the last few years. And whenever I am in his presence, I feel the spirit of wisdom, of reconciliation, of love and of tolerance that he brings. Hala Ayala, member of the Virginia House of Delegates who was representing the 51st district of Virginia, which includes Masroor Mosque, presented Huzooraa a certificate of recognition on behalf of the Governor of Virginia, Ralph Northam.

Auxiliaries’ Ijtemas in Sri Lanka

he annual Ijtema of the Majlis Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya and AtfalT ul-Ahmadiyya, Sri Lanka were held at

Masjid Fazl, Negombo. The Atfal Ijtema was held on 7 October and the Khuddam Ijtema was held on 13 and 14 of October 2018. The proceedings started with flag hoisting and then the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by the declaration of the auxiliary’s pledges respectively by those present. Prior to this, all local Majlis had held their local Ijtemas and selections had been made for those who would participate in the national Ijtema competitions. The chief guest of the event was A H Nasir Ahmad Sahib – Amir of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Sri Lanka. In his key-note address, he said that as taught by the Promised Messiahas, we should give preference to religion over the

world, and as Khuddam, they should be ready to sacrifice everything for the cause of religion. He cited the sacrifice of Hazrat Sahibzada Abdul Latifra of Afghanistan who laid down his life for the sake of Ahmadiyyat. Being a man of high esteem in the world, he did not submit to worldy pursuits. Amir Sahib said: “We must have a tendency of humbleness, not arrogance; a sense of complete obedience to the Nizam-eJamaat – [this is] a must.” He concluded his address by quoting from the sayings of the Promised Messiahas in his book, Kishti-e-Nuh. Apart from the usual competitions like prepared speech, tilawat and nazm, this year competitions like the memory and observation test and Chinese whispers were held. The memory and observation test required contestants to memorise fifty pictures shown to them on a screen and

write them down in a limited period of time. A major part of the quiz competitions was based on the Friday Sermons of our Imam, Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa. Those who had achieved educational excellence were awarded prizes. Awards were also distributed to those who had completed the Holy Quran challenge – complete a full reading of the Quran – during the month of Ramadan. Lajna Imaillah Sri Lanka held its Ijtema on 29 and 30 September 2018 at Ahmadiyya Jubilee Hall, Negombo. The main event started with flag hoisting by A H Nasir Ahmad Sahib, Amir Jamaat-eAhmadiyya Sri Lanka, followed by silent prayer. Shakeela Aslam Sahiba, Sadr Lajna Imaillah Sri Lanka, chaired the event which began with the recitation of the Holy Quran. In his address, after giving general

advice on benefitting from this Ijtema in the best possible manner, Amir Sahib quoted from the addresses delivered by Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa in the recent addresses to ladies at Jalsa Salana UK, Germany and Belgium. In her inaugural address, Sadr Lajna Imaillah Sri Lanka said that the aim of such gatherings was to promote love and brotherhood among its members and to develop righteousness and piety. An Nisa – a publication of Lajna Imaillah Sri Lanka – was launched and the first copy was given to Amir Sahib. The daylong event included academic competition such as Hifz-e-Quran competition, quiz competition and Urdu poem competition etc. Ahmadi girls and ladies from all chapters of the Ahmadiyya Jamaat in Sri Lanka attended.

Second PAAMA UK Peace Symposium O

n Saturday 27 October, the African Peace Symposium hosted by PAAMA UK, was held in the Tahir Hall, Baitul Futuh complex. This was the second PAAMA Peace Symposium. The theme of the Peace Symposium was “Peace and Brotherhood – Keys to a Progressive Future”. After the recitation of the Holy Quran, Ahmed Owusu-Konado, Chairman of the Event Organising Committee, welcomed all guests and gave a brief introduction of the dignitaries. The welcome address was delivered by Tommy Kallon, President of PAAMA UK. In his address, Tommy Kallon emphasised on the importance of PAAMA and mentioned the aim and goal of holding such events. He stated that, since its establishment, PAAMA had organised various events around the world aimed at promoting the true message of Islam. The main aim of the symposium was to create an avenue to engage and dialogue on issues that enhanced values of peace, justice and universal brotherhood. After the welcome address, a short 8-minute video presentation was played giving an introduction of the Amadiyya Muslim Jamaat and the engagements of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa. The highlight of the Peace Symposium was indeed the special message from our beloved Imam, Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa which was read out by Rafiq Hayat Sahib, Amir Jamaat UK: “Distinguished Guests, Assalamo Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatohu (may peace and blessings of Allah be upon you). “I am very pleased to learn that the Pan-African Ahmadiyya Muslim Association UK is holding its annual Peace Symposium for the second time. I pray that Allah the Almighty blesses this event in all respects, and I hope that all the

participants recognise that establishing peace in the world is the single greatest challenge facing mankind today. “In recent times we have seen tension between different groups and communities within nations rising and increasing division within society. This has led to conflicts and wars in some countries, whilst the far-right has resurfaced, and its dangerous resurgence shows no signs of abating. Similarly, at international level, hostilities are intensifying and threatening to boil over at any time. Several countries have acquired nuclear weapons that have the potential to wipe away nations at the push of a button. “If, God forbid, such arsenal are ever put to use, the catastrophic effects will last for generations, and will result in children being born with mental and physical disabilities for many decades to come. Moreover, the collateral damage that is seen in war-torn countries is causing death and misery beyond comprehension. And it is a grave strain on humanity. “The infrastructure in those nations, such as Yemen, where air-strikes and heavy bombardment has occurred, has been destroyed. Hence, where people are dying directly from bombing attacks and warfare, millions of others including babies and young children, women and elders are dying from famine, malnourishment and disease. “In light of this perilous state of the world, it is the urgent need of the time that people and nations set aside their vested interests and focus with all their energies upon establishing peace through justice, compassion and mutual respect. “A spirit of selflessness and genuine desire to alleviate the suffering of others must overcome the selfish greed that has taken root in so much of the world. “Now it is the time to put aside our differences, and for all the people, whether Continued on page 8

The Vitamins

Dr Noureen Ahmad General Practitioner, Belgium

Vitamins are nutrients that are essential for the normal functioning of our body. Most of these vitamins cannot be created in our body, so we need to obtain them through a healthy diet or supplements. It was in 1912 that the term “vitamin” was introduced to the world. From this moment on, the discovery journey for all vitamins started. After 1950, vitamins were commercially produced as multivitamin tablets by pharmaceutical companies. Henceforward, some governments also agreed to add vitamins to basic foods (like milk and flour) to prevent vitamin shortages in people and prevent diseases. Vitamins play a major role in our body, like cell growth and regulation which is important for maintaining normal health. There are two groups of vitamins: fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and water-soluble vitamins (group B, C). Fatsoluble vitamins, as the name suggests, are associated with fats of plant or animals, whereas water-soluble vitamins can usually be found in fresh fruits and vegetables. There are thirteen vitamins required for the normal functioning of the human body: vitamin A (retinols and carotenoids), vitamin D (cholecalciferol), vitamin E (tocopherols), vitamin K (quinones) and vitamin C (ascorbic acid). The group of B vitamins contains the following: vitamin B (thiamine), vitamin B (riboflavin), vitamin B (niacin), vitamin B (pantothenic acid), vitamin B₆ (pyridoxine), vitamin B (biotin), vitamin B (folic acid) and vitamin B (cobalamins). To some extent, vitamin A and vitamin D can be synthesised in our body. Now we will take a look at an overview of the aforementioned vitamins and why vitamin intake is important. Firstly, vitamin A. This vitamin plays a big role in vision growth and deficiency that can cause night blindness and other eye disorders. Good sources for vitamin A are dairy products, fish and animal products such as meat and liver.

Carotenoids from which vitamin A can be made in our body are found in vegetables such as carrots, cauliflower and cabbage. It is also in fruit, such as oranges, mandarins and bananas. The next vitamin is vitamin D, which is also known as the “sunshine vitamin”. This is because vitamin D can be synthesised in our body from UVB through sunlight. Vitamin D plays a big role in regulating bone growth and is needed for the normal functioning of our immune system. A deficiency of vitamin D can cause softening of the bones and joints and muscle complaints. Shortage of this vitamin can also lead to less protectivity against some cancers. It is naturally found in oily fish such as herring, salmon and mackerel. Meat and eggs also supply vitamin D, but much less than oily fish. Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant to protect cells, organs and tissues. Margarine, nuts and a variety of grain products are the base for this vitamin. Because of its very common source, vitamin E shortage is very unlikely to occur. Vitamin K is an important factor in the blood clotting mechanism. Deficiency of this vitamin can cause bleeding problems, though it is rare. Green leafy vegetables and dairy products are a good source for vitamin K. Vitamin C is the best-known vitamin, it has a function as an antioxidant, just like vitamin E, and is important for the uptake of iron from digested food. It also maintains the resistance of the human body. Shortage of vitamin C can lead to a reduced resistance and higher exposure to infections. This vitamin can be found in citrus fruits, kiwis, strawberries and vegetables like potatoes and cabbage. The final and the last group of vitamins, are the B-complex vitamins. Each of these B vitamins are needed to mediate and help many biochemical reactions in our body. Vitamin B-complex deficiencies can cause malfunctioning of the nervous system and mental disorders. These B-complex vitamins can be gained from many grain products, vegetables, meat and dairy products. Currently, there are different kinds of multivitamin tablets manufactured around the world. For some people, it is necessary to take these multivitamins as supplements. The most specific group is pregnant women. Pregnancy increases the need for nutrition to maintain the normal growth and health of the unborn child. Many studies recommend that healthy people should try to avoid multivitamin supplements. Healthy people can get enough vitamins through balanced diet with variety of food. Just because a supplement is promoted as “natural” does not mean it is safe. Always discuss with your doctor what supplements you want to take or are taking so your wellbeing can be carefully managed. (In the coming articles of this series, we will take a deeper look at the vitamins and the importance each vitamin bears.)

religious or not, whether rich or poor, to come together and recognise the fact that we are all part of the same human race and united as such. “The African continent and its people, whether they live in Africa or have moved abroad, have a great role to play in establishing peace in this world. Thus, never underestimate yourselves or the potential of the African people. God Almighty has given African people many qualities and capabilities, and so it is your duty to work hard and fulfil your vast potential. For this you must always act with justice and serve your nations with integrity and work towards their continued development and advancement. “Recently, I sent a message to a similar event in Ghana where I said that I hoped the African people [would be] leaders in forming alliances of peace. “I herby reiterate this message and I hope and pray that African people, wherever in the world they are, set a positive example for the rest of the world by establishing the highest standards of morality and justice. May the African people be the leaders in developing true peace in the world. “At the end, I pray for the success of this Peace Symposium and extend my best wishes to all the participants. “Wassalam. Yours sincerely, Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih V, Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.” Then, directly after Huzoor’s message, a short video was shown on the services to Africa by PAAMA in collaboration with Humanity First and IAAAE. After the video, brief remarks were given by guest speakers. The first speaker was Lord Tariq Ahmad of Wimbledon. Lord Ahmad congratulated the president of PAAMA for such an event and said that it was incumbent on all of us to strive towards attaining peace in the world. The second speech was delivered by the Queen Mother of Ghana, HRH Naa Tsotsoo Soyoo I. In her speech she thanked PAAMA and the Ahmadiyya Community for inviting her. She mentioned that she had also taken on the mantle of bringing awareness of modern slavery. Slavery ended many years ago, yet there are people who are still subjected to such treatment. HE Julius Peter Moto, High Commissioner of Uganda, briefly spoke about world peace and world problems. He said that more resources needed to be allocated in areas of spreading world peace and to solve world problems such as global warming, natural disasters, social economic deprivation, poverty, oppression of women and so on. Dr Erinma Bell, Executive Director Chrysalis Family Centre, in her brief speech mentioned that in order to attain peace on our streets and neighborhoods and countries, it was important and vital to engage in community engagements, stepping outside of our comfort zones and engaging with others to formulate mutual understanding and brotherhood. The fifth speaker was Dr Kaifala Marah,

Former Minster Finance & Governor Bank of Sierra Leone. He mentioned that the Ahmadiyya mission in Sierra Leone received a prestigious presidential gold medal award in 2013 in recognition of its outstanding contribution to the nation in the fields of health, education, agriculture, peace and humanitarian activities. He mentioned that the first Ahmadiyya missionary arrived in Sierra Leone in 1921 and since then, the members had grown significantly with 1,000 mosques across the country and setting up many secondary and primary schools. Alluding

to the previous video shown, he stated that through Humanity First, the mission had provided many facilities such as water and free medical camps. The keynote address was delivered by Karim AA Khan QC, Assistant SecretaryGeneral of the UN. In his speech Karim Khan Sahib mentioned the love the Khalifas have expressed for all people, especially Africa. He said that at a time when Muslims were being persecuted, the first place Muslims went for refuge was in Abyssinia. Thus, Africa played an important role in early Islam. That link

between Islam and Africa in one of glory and profound respect. The closing remarks were delivered by Amir Jamaat UK, Rafiq Hayat Sahib, in which he thanked PAAMA for organising the event and being able to bring about all kinds of people of different races and backgrounds together on one platform and share thoughts and ideas to promote peace throughout the world. The Peace Symposium was concluded by silent prayer led by Amir Sahib.

Friday Sermon 19 October 2018 Delivered from Baitul Aafiyat Mosque, Philadelphia, USA

The Philadelphia Mosque Inauguration After reciting the Tashahud, Ta‘awuz, and Surah al-Fatihah, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa recited verse 18 of Surah at-Taubah and then stated:

The translation of this verse is as follows: “He alone can keep the Mosques of Allah in a good and flourishing condition who believes in Allah, and the Last Day, and observes Prayer, and pays the Zakat, and fears none but Allah; so these it is who may be among those who reach the goal.” Alhamdolillah [all Praise be to Allah], Allah the Exalted has enabled us to construct the first mosque in this city and it is being officially inaugurated today. During inaugural ceremonies of buildings unrelated to religion, or buildings that are constructed for worldly benefits, according to the custom of the world – particularly in Western countries and generally throughout the world – there is much jubilation seen, and during their inauguration it is asserted that they will derive such and such worldly benefit from the building. However, when we inaugurate or construct a mosque, we do so with the intention to attain the pleasure of Allah the Exalted. Our only purpose and goal, which we must continue to maintain by inaugurating this House of God should be only to attain His pleasure. In order to attain the pleasure of Allah the Exalted, it is incumbent to follow His injunctions and commandments. The first and foremost among these is fulfilling the right of Allah’s worship and we must do so in the manner He has prescribed for us. In the verse which I recited earlier, and the translation of which has been read out, Allah the Exalted has told us as to what the goal of those constructing a mosque should be, and who are those people who fulfil the rights of constructing a mosque. These people are those that are concerned about keeping the mosque in good condition by ensuring that this house is filled with worshippers. They are those who believe in Allah the Exalted and the Day of Judgement. Everyone claims to believe in Allah the Exalted and the Day of Judgement, but Allah says that it is incumbent to demonstrate this through practical example. This can only take place when we show a practical example of iqamatusSalat [observance of prayer]. What is iqamatus-Salat? How is it expressed or how can we physically manifest it? Firstly, its

practical expression lies in the observance of congregational prayers. Secondly, it lies in being attentive towards God Almighty during prayers. This is what we find in the sayings and the commentary of the Quran by the Promised Messiahas. Thus, only those people truly observe prayers who are regular in the observance of congregational prayers. They observe prayers while purely

of their religion and for the betterment of humanity. They fulfil the rights that are owed to their fellow men. Following this, Allah the Exalted says that they fear none but Him. They remain concerned lest Allah the Exalted becomes displeased with any of their deeds and lest they become deprived of His love. They always remain mindful and act in accordance with the guidance and

focusing on Allah the Exalted. They observe prayers with humility, istighfar [seeking forgiveness] and attentiveness. If their attention is diverted elsewhere, they focus again on God Almighty. Every one of us can analyse as to what extent we are trying to reach this standard of iqamatus-Salat. The majority of people in this materialistic world do not pay heed towards offering prayers in congregation. Furthermore, even if they come to the mosque, they neither pay attention in the obligatory nor in the voluntary prayers as is their due right. Should this be the case, we ourselves are personally able to gauge our situation as to whether we are truly among those people whom Allah the Exalted has mentioned that construct mosques and fulfil its due rights. Allah then said that these people also pay the Zakat. They offer financial sacrifices for the sake

commandments that Allah the Exalted has given to a true believer in the Holy Quran. Hence, the responsibilities of believing Muslims are not insignificant. Furthermore, following the construction of this mosque, the responsibilities of those people who come here, or those who attribute themselves to this mosque have increased manifold. They will have to fulfil the rights of both their worship as well as those of the creation of Allah the Exalted. Only then will they be counted among the guided ones in the sight of Allah the Exalted. Only then will they be counted among those upon whom Allah the Exalted showers His affection. In the verse preceding the one recited, Allah the Exalted mentioned that those who associate partners with God have no right to construct or populate mosques, as their hearts are filled with the love of others

There are various forms of Shirk [associating partners with God]. The Promised Messiahas stated on one occasion that there are various forms of Shirk. The first form of Shirk is the more apparent and common one in which a person, stone, lifeless objects, energies and imaginary gods and goddesses have been taken to be Gods.

besides God. Furthermore, a person whose heart is filled with the love of others besides God can neither fulfil the rights of Allah nor the rights of His creation. The Promised Messiahas states that even though this form of Shirk is present in the world today (and it is visible), people have started to view this form of Shirk with dislike as this is the age of reason and understanding. Even though this Shirk is present, knowledge has enabled people to use logic to reject the fact that these idols made out of stone can do anything for them. The Promised Messiahas further states that there is another form of Shirk, which is subtly poisoning the people, and it is continuously increasing in this age. This refers to the fact that people no longer have any trust and faith in God Almighty (Malfuzat, Vol.3, pp. 79-80). The Promised Messiahas elaborated on this fact in the following manner that in comparison to God Almighty, people have more trust and faith in other objects and means. They are more inclined towards their employments, their businesses and their worldly endeavours and undertakings. This is the very reason people do not focus during their prayers, and why they do not pay attention towards congregating in mosques for worship. Hence, we should pray and humbly supplicate before Allah the Exalted, “O Lord! Make us believers in the true sense.” Since becoming a believer is merely achievable through the blessings of Allah the Exalted, we can only attain this rank if we supplicate for it. We should not rejoice at the mere fact that we have constructed a very beautiful mosque in the city of Philadelphia. Rather, we should fulfil its rights and when we are presented before God Almighty, we should hear the words that these are the people who constructed a mosque for the sake of God Almighty and also tried to fulfil its rights. Hence, these people are counted among those guided ones and those people whom God Almighty is pleased and happy with. Thus, we should strive to develop this thought within us. Once we have developed this thought and we strive to act accordingly, we will experience the blessings and bounties of this mosque in this world. Our

10 children and offspring will remain attached to their religion. We will be among those who are spreading the message of Allah the Exalted in this area and city. We will be among those who establish the unity of God in the world and the ones waving the flag of the Holy Prophetsa throughout the world. The Promised Messiahas has mentioned that one purpose of the construction of a mosque is that if one wishes to spread the true teaching and message of Islam, they ought to construct a mosque in such an area. The Promised Messiahas states, “At present, our Community is in great need of mosques. This is a House of God. In whichever village or city a mosque of ours is constructed, you may consider that the foundation of the progress of the Community has been laid. If you wish to spread Islam in a village or city where few Muslims can be found, or there are no Muslims at all, you should build a mosque, and God will draw Muslims there Himself. However, this cannot be achieved by merely constructing a mosque.” The Promised Messiahas states, “The condition is that when constructing a mosque ones intention should be sincere.” The mosque should be constructed with full sincerity and not for pretention. The Promised Messiahas further states, “It should merely be done for the sake of Allah.” In other words, the mosque should merely be constructed for the sake of Allah the Exalted. “Personal interests or vices should not have anything to do with it. Only then does God shower His blessings.” (Malfuzat, Vol.7, p. 119) Hence, we should always be mindful of the fact that when we construct mosques and offer financial sacrifices for the construction of mosques, it should have no hint of ostentation. Rather, our intention should be that once the mosque is constructed, we will be able to fulfil the rights of worship and so will our future generations remain protected and attached with their religion. Thus, along with the construction and congregation of the mosque, another huge responsibility has been placed on the shoulders of the residents here, and that is to make this mosque a means of spreading the true message of Islam in this city. It is said that across this city there are 47 mosques or prayer centres, however, this is the first purpose-built mosque. Hence, as this building has been constructed as a mosque, its purpose is not to tell people what the actual shape of a mosque is. Rather, it is to inform them that the true picture of the beautiful and peaceful teachings of Islam will be presented to the world through this mosque. We are the ones, who spread the true message of Islam in the world along with prayers and worship. Now, we will continue this through our practical example to an even greater extent. By demonstrating a practical example of the teachings of Islam in this area, we also have to increase the population of Ahmadi Muslims in this vicinity. However, I have been told that apart from one or two families, our Ahmadi population generally lives at some distance from here. I was speaking to the National President [of the USA Community] and he mentioned the fact that the total area and plot of the mosque is quite vast, and they can obtain permission for construction

Friday 9 November 2018 | AL HAKAM

The Promised Messiahas states, “The condition is that when constructing a mosque, ones intention should be sincere.” The mosque should be constructed with full sincerity and not for pretention. The Promised Messiahas further states, “It should merely be done for the sake of Allah.” In other words, the mosque should merely be constructed for the sake of Allah the Exalted. “Personal interests or vices should not have anything to do with it. Only then does God shower His blessings.” within the premises. If flats or houses can be constructed here, or if Ahmadis are granted permission to do so, people can live near the mosque. In my opinion, this is a good suggestion and should be considered. If this suggestion can be implemented, you should certainly try to settle Ahmadi families here. Once there is an Ahmadi population here and they come here with the intention of increasing the congregation of the mosque, as well as spreading the beautiful message of Islam, then Allah the Exalted will bless this intention, and in turn it will also serve to increase the Ahmadi population of the area, Insha-Allah [God willing]. Our history tells us that when Hazrat Mufti Muhammad Sadiq Sahib came to the United States as a missionary in 1920, he arrived at the harbour here in Philadelphia. However, he was not allowed to enter the country and was refused entry. He was imprisoned in a building alongside other prisoners. As a result of his preaching efforts, within two months, fifteen of his fellow inmates accepted Islam (Tarikh-eAhmadiyyat, Vol. 4, p. 250). Alongside his preaching efforts, his practical example, his piety and his prayers were also key. Hence, these attributes are vital alongside one’s tabligh activities. Furthermore, during his stay here it is said that approximately five or six thousand people accepted Ahmadiyyat. Hazrat Musleh Mau’udra at the time stated that if this is the amount of people entering the fold [of Ahmadiyyat], then within a few decades this figure could reach the hundreds of thousands (Tarikhe-Ahmadiyyat, Vol. 19, p. 477). In any case this target was not achieved, due to whatever hindrance, circumstances or our own shortcomings. But now we have the opportunity to make this endeavour with resolve. In fact, the message reached here in the time of the Promised Messiahas which he has mentioned in his book Barahin-eAhmadiyya. Thus, he states, “Similarly, there are well-wishing people for this Community

in English-speaking countries too who express their loyalty to it and sing its praises.” They are full of praise for the teachings of this Community and say that they are in complete agreement with them. The Promised Messiahas says, “…hence, Dr Baker, whose name is A George Baker, of 404 Susquehanna Avenue, Philadelphia, America, who having read my name and mention in The Review of Religions magazine wrote a note saying: (Mr Baker wrote an article and said) ‘I completely agree with the thoughts of your Imam. He has presented the true face of Islam to the world which was presented by the Holy Prophetsa.’” (Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya, Part V, Ruhani Khazain, Vol. 21, p.106) In one of his reports, Hazrat Mufti Muhammad Sadiq Sahib writes, “In the few days this humble one spent in America, despite all the difficulties and hurdles from the prejudiced Christians, much success was attained. All praise belongs to Allah for this.” He then writes, “At this moment in time, from my preaching endeavours, 29 men and women have entered into this true religion, whose names will be presented along with their new Islamic names.” He then noted the details and wrote, “Number one and two are Dr George Baker Sahib and Mr Ahmad Anderson Sahib who have remained in contact with me through letters for a long time and have been Muslims for a while. They are devout Muslims and I deem it necessary for their names to be at the top of the list.” (Al Fazl, 22 July 1920, Vol. 8, No.4, p. 1) Furthermore, as I have already mentioned, there were other names on that list. Recently the grave of Dr Baker was located here in Philadelphia. He passed away in 1918 and was buried here. So in that time, approximately a hundred years ago, the message of Ahmadiyyat had reached here. Nevertheless, as I have mentioned that God Almighty has enabled us to construct a beautiful mosque here in this city,

therefore, now the Community alongside the local missionary, must devise such plans for preaching in order for the beautiful teachings of Islam to spread in every direction, and for this area to become such an abode of peace and beauty that people strive to come and live here. In terms of population this is the sixth largest city in America. If the true message of Islam is conveyed here and in neighbouring areas, then God willing, from among these very people true worshippers will be born who will fill the mosques, and they will be those who fear God Almighty and become rightly guided. Thus, every mosque that we construct presents us with a big challenge in that we must reform our conditions by forging a connection with God Almighty, and improve our practical conditions and also open up new avenues for tabligh. We should not be content with the fact that we have constructed a mosque or that in this age we have accepted the Ardent Devotee of the Holy Prophetsa – who was to revive the teachings of Islam. The Promised Messiahas was to remove all the misconceptions that people had towards Islam, irrespective of whether these misconceptions were a result of non-Muslim interference or the exegesis of so-called Muslim scholars. It is now our responsibility as those who have accepted the Promised Messiahas to strive to our utmost ability, and using all our faculties we must reform our conditions and raise the standards of our worship to the level that God Almighty wished for us to achieve and was repeatedly outlined to us by the Promised Messiahas. I have been informed that the expenditure of this mosque is $8.1 million [US]. One third of the amount was given by the [local] community, and some by the national headquarters, the details of which I will present later on. These $8.1 million will only prove beneficial when we fulfil the purpose of this mosque. Despite living far away, if for the time being there are not many people living nearby, whoever resides in this area should strive to congregate in this mosque five times a day [for prayers]. On one occasion, the Promised Messiahas said, “The real beauty of a mosque does not lie in its outward appearance, rather it lies in those worshippers who offer their prayers with sincerity, otherwise all mosques are deserted.” In those days, mosques were desolate, but today, the erroneous slogans of so-called scholars have turned thriving mosques from an abode of peace into a place of turmoil. The Promised Messiahas then says, “The mosque of the Holy Prophetsa was small; its roof was made from branches of date trees and when it rained, the water would seep through, but ponder over the magnificent works that took place in that mosque.”

The Promised Messiahas further says, “The glamour of a mosque is dependent upon its worshipers.” He further adds, “It is vital that mosques are constructed for the propagation of righteousness.” Thus, if you populate this mosque by worshipping with sincerity and righteousness, then your worship will be accepted and you will also be able to spread the message of Islam to the non-Muslims in the correct manner.

Friday 9 November 2018 | AL HAKAM The Promised Messiahas further says, “The glamour of a mosque is dependent upon its worshipers.” He further adds, “It is vital that mosques are constructed for the propagation of righteousness.” (Malfuzat, Vol.8, p. 170) Thus, if you populate this mosque by worshipping with sincerity and righteousness, then your worship will be accepted and you will also be able to spread the message of Islam to the non-Muslims in the correct manner. On one occasion the Holy Prophetsa said, “Whoever enters our mosques with the intention of learning virtuous deeds, they will be counted amongst those people who perform Jihad in the way of God Almighty.” (Musnad Ahmad bin Hanbal, Vol. 3, p.322, Hadith No. 8587, Aalimul Kutub, Beirut 1998) Hence, this is the purpose of a true Muslim. Today, the name of Islam is tarnished for the reason that it teaches Jihad, and the actions of some Muslims contribute to this slander. However, it is the responsibility of a true believer to learn virtuous deeds, to act on these virtues and then spread them. In essence, one will

with the utmost attention and abstain from every injustice, cruelty, fraud, corruption, failure to discharge one’s due rights and favouritism”. Showing excess favouritism is also incorrect and usurping the rights of others is also wrong. We should be extra mindful of this fact, “… and also abstain from evil company.” The youth should pay particular attention to this. These days there are different ways of keeping evil company, through some social media platforms or there are immoral things on other forums. All of these aspects are a form of evil company and we should refrain from them. Many people have come here from Pakistan having sought asylum or are here on a refugee status, they need to pay particular attention to this. The objective before every Ahmadi should not be simply to seek worldly pleasures and its attractions, rather they should have a deep concern for the hereafter because its rewards and fruits are everlasting. The Promised Messiahas writes: “God Almighty prepares a form of ledger for each person on a daily basis, recording all their deeds.” One’s deeds are

pursuits is not a sign of progress, rather one’s destruction, and you should always be mindful of the fact that you are to give precedence to your faith over all worldly aspects. You should fulfil the due rights of the mosque and also the due rights of God Almighty’s worship. I shall present another extract from the writings of the Promised Messiahas, in which he states: “Remember that our Community is not simply for living a life like other normal worldly people. It is not enough to simply proclaim to be a Muslim and consider no need of any action, which unfortunately has become the state of the Muslims. If they are asked whether they are Muslim, they reply, ‘All praise to Allah’ and yet they do not offer their prayers, nor afford respect and honour to the holy and sacred institutions of God Almighty. Therefore, I do not desire from you to simply utter a proclamation from your tongues and practically demonstrate nothing. This is a futile condition to have and God Almighty is certainly not pleased with this and it was for the reformation of this very condition of the world that God Almighty has sent me. Thus, if despite

Always remember that worldly provisions or wealth can never guarantee our safety or the safety of our progeny. In fact, it is only with the grace and blessings of God Almighty and only by forging a connection with Him and acting on His commandments that we can ensure our security. then be performing Jihad and it is our responsibility as Ahmadis to perform this Jihad. The Promised Messiahas has repeatedly advised us to learn virtuous deeds, to act on them and also to make progress in righteousness. Thus, on one occasion the Promised Messiahas said, “Listen to this advice carefully. Those who enter this Community and forge a connection of devotion and subservience, it is so that they can scale the ultimate heights of virtue, piety and righteousness, and they become free from all form mischief, discord and immorality. They should observe the five daily prayers and refrain from falsehood. They should not cause anyone harm through their speech.” They should not cause any kind of distress. “They should not commit any kind of immoral act and should not entertain any kind of mischief, discord or act of cruelty even in their hearts.” He further says, “In short, they should not commit any sort of evil or any vice that can be committed or uttered,” they should not commit any sin physically or verbally. “They should not exhibit any of these immoral practices and also abstain from all carnal desires or any excessive actions. They should become pure-hearted, harmless and humble servants of God, and no poisonous trait should be left within them. Their objective should be to show compassion for the whole of mankind and the fear of God. They should purify their tongues, hands and their thoughts from every evil, impurity, dishonesty and rebellious way. They should observe the five daily prayers

recorded on a daily basis. “Therefore, man should also prepare a daily log of all his deeds. He should assess all his good deeds as well as the ill deeds he commits, and also which acts of virtue he adhered to and which ones he failed to discharge.” The Promised Messiahas further states: “One should not simply just prepare this ledger, but rather should then reflect upon it; it is only then that one can strive towards performing virtuous deeds and be counted among the guided ones in the sight of God Almighty.” The Promised Messiahas states: “One should assess as to how much progress they have made in virtuous deeds. One’s today and tomorrow should never be the same. One who makes no progress in virtuous deeds and his today is the same as his tomorrow, consider him to be in great loss”; even if one’s today and tomorrow are the same it is great loss. “However, one who believes in God Almighty and has perfect belief in Him shall never perish.” (Majmuah Ishtiharaat, Vol. 3, pp. 46-47) Thus, greatly ponder over this. If God Almighty is bestowing His grace and blessings upon us, then it is incumbent for us to express our gratitude to Him. Hence, those who have become neglectful of fulfilling the due rights of God Almighty and His worship owing to their worldly endeavours should pay great focus towards this. They should assess their conditions by asking themselves whether their practice is in harmony with the pledge they have made in their Bai‘at? Those who have recently come here should remember that immersing oneself into worldly

forging a bond with me, one does not reform his condition and nor progresses in his practical faculties and instead considers the utterance from his tongue to be sufficient, then such actions of a person will signify that he does not consider my advent necessary.” As mentioned earlier, enhancing one’s practical faculties means to fulfil the due rights of God Almighty, of His worship and of His creation. Moreover, it is to propagate the message of Islam to world. The Promised Messiahas further states, “If, through your practice, you wish to demonstrate that there is no need of my advent, then what is the purpose of forming a bond with me? Thus, if you establish a connection with me then you must fulfil the purpose and aim for which I have come; and that is for one to show loyalty and faithfulness to God Almighty and act upon the teachings of the Holy Quran in the manner demonstrated by the Holy Prophetsa and his Companions. Ponder over the correct principles laid out in the Holy Quran and act upon them. For God Almighty it will not be sufficient enough for one to merely profess verbal belief and then not follow up with improved actions and deeds. Remember, the Community that God Almighty wishes to establish cannot survive without righteous deeds”. Without actions, a community cannot survive. “This is that remarkable Community, the inception of which began from the time of Prophet Adamas. There is not a single prophet that appeared in this world who failed to make mention of this message. Therefore, cherish this message and one

can only do that by proving through one’s actions that they are the ones who belong to this righteous community.” (Malfuzat, Vol.10, pp. 137-138) Thus, this is not a small matter, rather it is one that requires great thought and contemplation. Always remember that worldly provisions or wealth can never guarantee our safety or the safety of our progeny. In fact, it is only with the grace and blessings of God Almighty and only by forging a connection with Him and acting on His commandments that we can ensure our security. May Allah the Almighty enable every one of us to live our lives according to these teachings. Usually, during the inauguration of mosques, I mention certain details of the mosque construction and I will present them today as well. The details are as follows: The land for the mosque was bought in 2007. Approximately six years later, in 2013, the construction work started. During this time there were some hindrances, whether they were just or not, nonetheless, this year it has been completed. As I have mentioned the total cost of this mosque was $8.1 million [US], in which the local community of Philadelphia gave just over $2.435 million. The other community’s in the United States donated just over $1.243 million. The national headquarters contribution was just over $4.478 million. The national headquarters donated approximately more than half of the amount. Initially only two acres of land were obtained and later on, a further acre was obtained. Then in 2015, a non-Muslim, who was perhaps a Christian, gifted his property adjacent to the mosque. Whatever his intention was, whether it was worldly [or something else], he gave it to the Community as charity. At present, the total area of the land is four acres. As I mentioned before, housing schemes or flats can be built here. The covered area of this building is 21,400 square feet. It is a threestorey building. In the basement there is a commercial kitchen. On the middle level, an apartment for a missionary has been built and there is a library and offices on the top floor. The mosque area is divided into two parts. There is a hall for men and women, which is five thousand square feet. It has been divided into two using a partition and there is space for approximately 350 men and 350 women to offer prayers. In this part of the building, separate toilets have been made for men and woman as well as other necessities. There is a six thousand square feet multi-purpose hall which can accommodate seven hundred people and can also be used for sports. There are also offices of the Community there. There is allotted car parking for forty-six cars. Altogether eighty-six cars can be parked with room for additional parking. May Allah enable all Ahmadis to fulfil the purpose of building a mosque laid out by Allah the Almighty, which I have just mentioned, and may this mosque be a milestone in spreading the true message of Islam in this area. UK Atfal in Ghana

Following the Footsteps of a Man of God

Moonis Nasir MKA UK

MAA UK successfully planned a trip to Ghana, from 21-28 October. The primary aim of this trip was to show the Atfal the journey of Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaa in Ghana and to harbour within them a spirit of sacrifice, resolve and complete trust in God. Hence, this trip was called, “Follow the footsteps of a man of God.” A total of 26 Atfal, 13 organisers and 12 parents embarked on this faith inspiring journey. On 21 October, at 21:30 local time, the entourage arrived in Accra, the capital of Ghana, being welcomed by Sadr Majlis Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya Ghana. Throughout the course of the trip, many places were visited and many faith-inspiring lectures were heard from elders in Ghana. The journey began by travelling to Kumasi, after which they were led back to Accra. What was noticeable by the Atfal was that the more they travelled away from Accra towards Kumasi, the more the landscape changed to lush green. In Kumasi, Atfal visited the Asofa Mosque, which is located in the heart of Kumasi. They also visited TI Ahmadiyya Secondary School which is considered the best school in the Ashanti region. The love and affection shown by the people of Kumasi was indescribable, an experience which will forever remain with the Atfal. The next day, Atfal visited the Kokofu Hospital which is approximately a two-hour drive from Kumasi Mosque. Upon arrival, they were greeted by Dr Mahmud Ahmad Butt Sahib, originally from Qadian, who has

been serving in Ghana for the past 20 years. Dr Mahmud Sahib gave the Atfal a tour of the hospital. At the time of its opening, in 1971, this hospital was one of the very few hospitals present in the region. Since its opening, the hospital’s reputation has grown, not only in Ghana but across all of the West Africa. On 24 October, Atfal visited Jamiatul Mubasharin, Madrasa Hifz-ul-Quran and Jamia International, which wasopened in 2012 with 186 students and 12 teachers. They also visited Saltpond mission house and mosque, the birth place of Ahmadiyyat in Ghana. On the fifth day of the trip, Atfal visited the Ekrawfo mosque where they met with the grandson of Chief Mahdi Appah, Ahmad Afaw, who is now 80 years old. He gave a brief history of the area and of the first missionary, Abdur Raheem Nayyar Sahib who was sent there by Hazrat Musleh Maudra. They also visited the Ekrawfo cemetery, TI Senior school, Bagh-e-Ahmad where the first Jalsa took place, Maqbara Musian and later, after arriving back in Accra, they went to the Wahab Adam Studios, opened in 2017. On 26 October, the sixth day of the trip, Atfal sat with Naib Amir Sahib who narrated the history of Accra Jamaat headquarters and the mosque. On the same day, Atfal visited the Raqeem Press. Overall, the trip was extremely faith inspiring and an eye-opening experience for the UK Atfal. MKA UK
