The 44th Majlis-e-Shura UK concluded on Sunday, 21 May 2023 at the Tahir Hall of Baitul Futuh Mosque, blessed by the presence of Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih Vaa. Arriving shortly after 13:00 BST, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa greeted the attendees and called Hafiz Fazl-e-Rabbi Sahib to recite a portion of the Holy Quran, who recited verses 59-60 of Surah an-Nisa’. This was followed by the English translation of the verses, presented by Jonathan Butterworth Sahib. Huzooraa then took to the podium and delivered a faith-inspiring address in which he reminded the delegates of their duties, urging them to emulate the Sahabah, the Companions of the Holy Prophetsa. During his compelling address, Huzooraa drew extensively from a historic Shura address delivered by Hazrat Muslehe-Maudra in 1944. After opening his address with tashahud, ta‘awuz and Surah al-Fatihah, Huzooraa prayed for the delegates of Majlise-Shura and for the best possible results of their deliberations. He reminded them that their responsibilities do not cease with the conclusion of the shura. They must strive to ensure that all recommendations approved by the Khalifatul Masih are enacted, praying that Allah the Almighty enables them to serve with the required spirit and diligence. Hadith-e-Rasul – Sayings of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa
Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas, In His Own Words
Dedicate yourselves to Allah “Therefore, I consider it an obligation to advise my community and convey this message to them. Hereafter, everyone is free to heed my words or ignore them. Anyone of you who desires salvation and seeks a pure or everlasting life, ought to dedicate their life for the sake of Allah. Let each and every one of you strive and anxiously endeavour to reach the stage and rank where they can say that their life, their death, their sacrifices, their Prayers, are for Allah alone; and in the likeness of Abrahamas, let their soul proclaim: Continued on next page >> Photo courtesy of Suhaib Ahmad

All of you who hold a relationship with me see for yourselves that I consider the dedication of my life for the sake of Allah to be the fundamental purpose of my existence. Now all of you ought to delve into yourselves and see how many of you prefer this action of mine for yourselves and hold dear the dedication of their lives in the way of God.” (Al Hakam, Vol. 4, No. 31, 31 August 1900, p. 4)

Referencing his recent Friday sermon, Huzooraa shed light on his expectations of each participant, urging them to play their respective roles to the fullest. Huzooraa said, “I would like to reiterate […] that your responsibilities do not cease once the shura concludes. Rather, you should consider that your duties have only just begun. Once the formal proceedings end, all delegates and office bearers of the Jamaat must strive to ensure that whatever recommendations are approved by Khalifatul Masih are enacted.” Huzooraa then expanded on the importance of emulating the Companions of the Holy Prophetsa, emphasising the need for spiritual transformation and cleansing, unwavering loyalty, and readiness for sacrifice. He reiterated that the rank of a companion was not limited to those who met the Holy Prophetsa physically but could extend to those who spiritually connected with the Holy Prophet’ssa teachings. Huzooraa said, “Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra quoted a part of a couplet of the Promised Messiahas that: “It means, ‘You shall join the companions, when you join with me.’ “These illuminating words convey the glad tiding that those who wholeheartedly accept the Promised Messiahas will, through the grace of Allah, join the rank of the companions of the Holy Prophetsa. Clarifying this point, Hazrat Musleh-eMaudra explains that it does not mean that a person from a different era will gain the capacity to physically see and meet the Holy Prophetsa. Of course, that is impossible and against the laws of nature. Rather, it means that through one’s righteous acts and deeds, a person can attain the spiritual rank of a companion.” Dwelling deeper into the concept of spiritual companionship, Huzooraa presented the analogy of a royal court and said that trusted courtiers spent less time with the monarch compared to servants and domestic staff. Nonetheless, the latter are not considered close companions of the monarch, even though they come and
go within the royal household and spend a great deal of time in close physical proximity to the monarch. Hence, a companion does not necessarily require physical proximity to the leader but a spiritual connection allied with unyielding loyalty. A faithful companion, he stated, is one with firm belief and conviction, who endeavours to live according to the moral values and teachings of the one they follow. Huzooraa also underscored the variety in the ranks of the companions of the Holy Prophetsa, ranging from those who simply had the chance to meet him once to those who laid down their lives in his defence. Achieving the status of a companion after the era of the Holy Prophetsa required greater effort and sacrifices, he explained, but it was not an impossible task. Huzooraa said, “Allah the Almighty, out of his beneficence and grace, has eternally opened a Divine spiritual door, leading to companionship for all those righteous souls, whose hearts are filled with an ardent desire to be amongst the companions of the Holy Prophetsa of Islam. And, in this era, having entered the fold of the Promised Messiahas and taken his bai‘at, those who serve his mission faithfully can also attain the status of being his companion. So, I urge all of you to reflect upon the words of the Promised Messiahas that: “[‘You shall join the companions, when you join with me.’] “Strive to avail the eternal gift bestowed to mankind by Allah the Almighty, of gaining the spiritual companionship of the Holy Prophetsa, and the Promised Messiahas.” Huzooraa explained that this requires that, having accepted the Promised Messiahas, we strive ever more to act upon the sunnah of the Holy Prophetsa, absorb his teachings and establish a living relationship with Allah the Almighty. It requires us to be ready for all possible sacrifices and to hold a deep and resolute determination to spread the message of Islam. Huzooraa inspired all participants to strive for the spiritual companionship of the Holy Prophetsa and the Promised Messiahas. Huzooraa instilled in the hearts of the delegates the resolve to fulfil the purpose of their advent, which is to bring people closer to Allah the Almighty. Huzooraa further reflected on the philosophy of spiritual companionship and its necessity in the age where Islamic teachings are to be conveyed through logical proof and rational evidence. In this era, Huzooraa explained, the global acceptance of our teachings may not be instantaneous but rather gradual, requiring unwavering patience and trust in Allah. Further delving into the speech of Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra, Huzooraa highlighted that trials and tribulations serve to strengthen one’s faith and to demonstrate Allah’s majestic glory. He noted that such trials are integral to the spiritual salvation and true freedom of Allah’s followers. Citing the historical trial that followed the demise of the Holy Prophetsa, Huzooraa reminded attendees of Hazrat Abu Bakr’sra fortitude and patience amidst immense grief. This reinforced the importance of remaining steadfast in faith during difficult times. In the contemporary context, Huzooraa lauded Ahmadi Muslims’ sincere devotion to the Holy Prophetsa, their acceptance
of the Promised Messiahas, and their resolve to make sacrifices for their faith. Acknowledging the global challenges that Ahmadis face, Huzooraa affirmed that no suffering could match the companions’ distress at the Holy Prophet’ssa demise, reinforcing the faith’s resilience and strength. Closing his address, Huzooraa reminded the shura delegates of the responsibility entrusted to them, to prioritise their faith over worldly matters and to remain committed to fulfilling the mission of the Promised Messiahas. He urged delegates to demonstrate the same trust in Allah as was shown by Hazrat Abu Bakrra, stating that only by living such lives can they truly serve as servants of the Holy Prophetsa and fulfil the purpose of the Promised Messiah’sas advent. Huzooraa said, “With the Grace of Allah, today, millions of Ahmadi Muslims remain sincerely devoted to the Holy Prophetsa and, according to his command, have accepted the Promised Messiahas. In this era, it is the members of our Jamaat who strive to live their lives according to the noble and righteous examples of the companions and stand ready to make every possible sacrifice for the sake of their faith. Whatever suffering or problems we may endure, none of which can ever match the distress felt by the companions of the Holy Prophetsa upon his demise. Ahmadi Muslims will, inshaAllah, always remain steadfast and resolute in our faith. Not only do we verbally claim to be ready for every possible sacrifice, but in practice, Ahmadis worldwide have manifested immense sacrifices to fulfil their objective of furthering the mission of the Promised Messiahas. “Therefore, before concluding, I wish to reiterate that, as delegates of the Majlis-eShura, you must, at all times, act with the fear of Allah Almighty ingrained in your hearts and recognise the trust placed in you. Never forget that we are the people who pledged to give precedence to our faith over all worldly matters and have sworn that we will strive to fulfil the mission of the Promised Messiahas until our dying breath and endure every form of sacrifice and suffering required to achieve this. “For the sake of the prosperity of our Jamaat and to fulfil our religious objectives, we must exhibit the same conviction and trust in Allah the Almighty as was displayed by Hazrat Abu Bakrra, who when faced with the ultimate crisis, remained patient and steadfast. Only if we strive to live our lives in this way, can we fulfil our duties as servants of the Holy Prophetsa; only then can we fulfil
the purpose of the advent of the Promised Messiahas.” Reminding delegates of their duty to represent their respective jamaats faithfully, Huzooraa urged them to set aside personal desires and serve their faith and religion selflessly. He highlighted that such service is a blessing of Allah Almighty and can lead to attaining the love of Allah and the pleasure of the Holy Prophetsa. Huzooraa reminded the delegates to “Always pay heed to the trust placed within you by the members of the Jamaat, who have elected you to represent them at the shura, and through which you have gained the opportunity to serve your faith. Always remember that you must not be representatives and delegates of your respective jamaats in name only. Rather, in reality, you must set aside all personal and worldly desires and make every effort to fulfil your true purpose, which is to serve your faith and religion until your dying breath. Consider every opportunity to serve your faith as an immense blessing of Allah Almighty.” In his closing prayer, Huzooraa prayed that all may be forever recipients and beneficiaries of the Holy Prophet’ssa blessed prayers, fulfilling their objectives with humility, devotion, and loyalty. In the end, Huzooraa led everyone in a silent prayer. After the address, Huzooraa graciously granted an opportunity to the various groups of delegates to have photographs taken with him. Following this, Zuhr and Asr prayers were offered at 14:15 BST, further enriching the spiritual ambience of the day. At 14:35 BST, Huzooraa left for the Nasir Hall. As attendees were still arriving from the mosque, he chose to stay in the gallery, amidst the people. It was an inspiring sight as Huzooraa stood among the congregation for a short while, giving everyone the opportunity to greet. Subsequently, he joined the delegates for lunch in the Nasir Hall. Huzoor’saa relaxed demeanour around members of the Jamaat added an atmosphere of comfort and warmth to the event. At 15:25 BST, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa went to inspect the newlyinaugurated offices. As Huzooraa came to the front of the Baitul Futuh complex to depart, a large crowd of men, women and children had gathered to catch a glimpse of their Imam. They were singing poems and raising slogans of takbir. Huzoor’saa departure at 15:50 BST marked the end of an inspiring and spiritually uplifting event. (Report prepared by Al Hakam)

Purpose of ijtemas Huzoor’s special message to Ahmadi youth at MKA Germany’s annual ijtema Majlis Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya Germany is holding its annual ijtema at the Festplatz am Ratsweg in Frankfurt from 19-21 May 2023. Earlier today, a special video message from Hazrat Amirul Momineen, Khalifatul Masih Vaa, was presented before the khuddam and also broadcast globally on MTA International. Huzooraa, after reciting the tashahud and ta‘awuz, announced with gratitude to Allah that Majlis Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya Germany is conducting its second ijtema after overcoming the obstacles imposed by the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa mentioned that Sadr Sahib Majlis Khuddam-ulAhmadiyya had expressed his heartfelt desire for Huzooraa to convey a special message to the German khuddam. Huzooraa said that members of the Germany Jamaat, by the grace of Allah, hold a level of sincerity and loyalty. Huzooraa said, “May this spirit of sincerity and loyalty always remain.” Huzooraa stated that, by the grace of Allah, the members of Majlis Khuddam-ulAhmadiyya Germany have a profound bond of loyalty with Khilafat. Huzooraa further mentioned that when German khuddam come to visit him, he observes a special connection they possess with Khilafat. Huzooraa prayed, “May Allah the Almighty, as I have expressed earlier, continue to strengthen and enhance this relationship.” Regarding the purpose of ijtemas, Huzooraa emphasised the importance of understanding that they serve as platforms to enrich one’s religious knowledge and promote moral and spiritual growth. The purpose of ijtemas should not be limited to mere participation in sports or organising routine programmes. Huzooraa stated, “The primary goal of ijtemas is to ensure that our youth and children achieve moral, intellectual, and spiritual development.” Huzooraa further emphasised that by keeping this objective in mind, individuals will be able to fulfil the purpose of their pledge effectively. In accordance with the mission of the Promised Messiahas, who was sent as the most-ardent devotee of the Holy Prophetsa to revive the authentic teachings of Islam, Huzooraa conveyed, “The true understanding of the Noble Quran in this era is elucidated for us by the Promised Messiahas.” Therefore, it is essential to consistently remind ourselves that fulfilling our pledge with the Promised Messiahas goes beyond mere acknowledgement. “We must wholeheartedly execute it with unwavering loyalty and devotion, thereby positioning ourselves as active participants in the noble endeavours undertaken by the Promised Messiahas. Huzooraa emphasised, “If we fail to do so, there will be no distinction between us [Ahmadis] and others.” Huzooraa conveyed that, according to the
Promised Messiahas, Allah Almighty desires a noticeable distinction between us and others. Huzooraa further emphasised, “Therefore, every Ahmadi youth, every Ahmadi child who has reached a mature age, and indeed, every Ahmadi [in general], should bear in mind that there must exist a distinction between us and others. And what exactly is this distinction? It is the pursuit of attaining the pleasure of God Almighty.” Huzooraa expressed that every single action we undertake should be driven by the objective of seeking God’s pleasure. We must
offering prayers in congregation. Referring to the time when Covid-19 was widespread, Huzooraa mentioned that people resorted to offering prayers at home. However, Huzooraa expressed concern that a misconception may have arisen, suggesting that praying at home alone is sufficient. Huzooraa clarified that this practice of individual prayer at home does not foster unity. Huzooraa emphasised the importance of following the commandment of Allah to attend the mosque for congregational prayers.
exert maximum effort towards achieving this goal. On several occasions, the Promised Messiahas has imparted valuable advice to the Jamaat, urging them to attentively heed his counsel in order to fulfil the true purpose of their pledge. Highlighting the significance of unity and harmony within the Jamaat, Huzooraa underscored the advice of the Promised Messiahas, who emphasised the importance of fostering a spirit of unity and harmony among its members. Huzooraa further emphasised, “It is the atmosphere of love and affection [towards one another] that truly defines the essence of a Jamaat.” Huzooraa highlighted that the Promised Messiahas stated that his mission revolves around two principles. Firstly, to call towards Tawhid [the Unity of Allah]; secondly, to promote love and compassion. Huzooraa emphasised that it is crucial for every member of Majlis Khuddam-ulAhmadiyya and Atfal-ul-Ahmadiyya to unite and worship Allah the Almighty in order to establish the concept of Tawhid. Huzooraa further highlighted that one effective way to achieve this is through congregational salat. Huzooraa emphasised the need for individuals to wholeheartedly strive in this regard and set an example by personally
Recognising the challenges of the present era, Huzooraa conveyed that negative influences are spreading. To counteract these negative forces, it becomes imperative for us to strengthen our bond with Allah. In order to accomplish this, one must diligently prioritise and fulfil their prayers, offering them punctually. In prayer, one should strive to attain His pleasure. Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa said that the Promised Messiahas advised not to make worldly pursuits one’s sole objective. Huzooraa further said that he had highlighted in his recent sermons how one can truly fulfil the rights of worship towards Allah, attain elevated morals, and effect a genuine positive change within oneself. Huzooraa emphasised the crucial point that if the underlying objective of one’s commitment is centred on religion and seeking Allah’s pleasure, then we can undoubtedly accomplish the true purpose of our pledge. Huzooraa said that the Promised Messiahas emphasised the importance of not becoming excessively absorbed in worldly matters to the extent that one forgets about God and neglects their responsibilities towards fellow human beings. Furthermore, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa said, the Promised Messiahas has directed our
attention towards the importance of giving special consideration to the recitation of the Holy Quran. It is not only essential for every khadim and tifl to recite the Holy Quran, but they should also strive to understand its meaning, study its translation, and read its commentary. Huzooraa emphasised that the best method by which this can be done is through studying the writings, books, and the Malfuzat of the Promised Messiah. Huzooraa highlighted that a wealth of Jamaati literature is now available in the German language as well, and he encouraged everyone to read and comprehend it. By doing so, Huzooraa explained, one can truly grasp the profound meanings of the Holy Quran. Huzooraa expounded on the essence of true bai‘at by emphasising that it can only be deemed genuine when every action and deed is undertaken to seek the pleasure of God while fulfilling the rights owed to Him and His creation. Huzooraa further emphasised that without personal reform, there can be no assurance for the betterment of future generations. Drawing attention to the influence of media – including social media and television – that can divert individuals away from religion and Allah, Huzooraa emphasised the potential negative impact on one’s moral values. Consequently, Huzooraa stressed the importance of refraining from engaging in the vices linked to such things. Huzooraa further highlighted the guidance of the Promised Messiahas, who emphasised the need to safeguard oneself from the company of those with negative influences. To achieve this, Huzooraa advised the youth to pray to Allah for protection from bad company. Huzooraa added that there are khuddam parents who have young children. Huzooraa advised them to create a friendly and nurturing environment for their children, teaching them about religious matters. Huzooraa emphasised the importance of steering them away from evil influences and protecting them from harm. By doing so, parents can safeguard their offspring, fulfil their pledge of bai’at, uphold their commitment to Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya, and demonstrate loyalty to Khilafat. Huzooraa explained that when individuals become overly absorbed in worldly matters and attractions, they tend to forget the true purpose of their pledge. Mentioning the blessings of Allah on Ahmadis, Huzooraa stated that it is essential to express gratitude for these blessings, to follow Allah’s commandments and teachings, and to consistently strive to attain His pleasure. Huzooraa concluded by expressing the hope that Allah enables everyone to fulfil these objectives. (Report prepared by Al Hakam)

Reporting on this journey, Bashir Ahmad Rafiq Sahib stated that the journey on the plane took two hours. As they approached Madrid, they sensed a sort of anxiousness in Huzoorrh. When Madrid’s airport became visible, Huzoorrh said, “I can hear the stomping hooves of Tariq’s horses. Can you also hear them?” Huzoorrh repeated this sentence two or three times. During this journey, Huzoorrh stayed in Madrid for two days. He then went to the historic centre of Islamic culture, AlAndalus, and then reached Cordoba on 27 May. He stayed in a hotel and visited the grand mosque of Cordoba. The following day, Huzoorrh went to Granada and visited the Alhambra palace. This series, Zikr-e-Habib, explores the life of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas, the Promised Messiah and Mahdi, and his sayings, shedding light on his noble character and the impact of his teachings on his followers and the world at large. Like all other prophets of God, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas, the Promised Messiah and Mahdi, would spend his day engaged in a variety of activities that were in line with his divine mission and responsibilities. To put it briefly, Prophet Ahmadas was divinely commissioned to revive Islam and guide mankind towards one God. By sheer grace of God Almighty, the Promised Messiahas lived a long-blessed life and left a lasting impact on the world. His days and nights were full of significant events spanning the time before and after his claim of Messiahship. Prophet Ahmadas beseeched Allah’s nearness in his days of solitude and also spent time travelling and blessing many with his profound company. He also wrote a myriad of books. In the likeness of Propeht Jesusas, he was unnecessarily put on trial in numerous false and baseless cases by people of every nation and religion. Apart from days of health, the Promised Messiahas also went through periods of sickness and various illnesses in accordance with the prophecy of Prophet Muhammadsa. In the midst of all his engagements, Prophet Ahmadas also gave sufficient time to his family and close friends. Day in, day out, the Promised Messiahas would do everything in his power to fulfil his assigned duties, so much so that, pleased with his utmost dedication to the cause of Islam, Allah the Almighty sent the following revelation:

“You are the revered Messiah whose time shall not be wasted.” (Tadhkirah [English], p. 498) One of the Companionsra of the Promised Messiahas, who served him for a long time and had the opportunity to spend ample time in his company, Hazrat Bhai Abdul Rahman Qadianira, gave the following eye-witness testimony about his daily way of life: “Huzooras would not waste a single moment of his life, and all his attention and efforts were concentrated on preaching and spreading the message of Islam.” (Tatimmah Sirat-ul-Mahdi, p. 394)
Early morning Hazrat Sahibzada Mirza Bashir Ahmadra MA narrates: “My mother [Hazrat Amma Janra] told me that the Promised Messiahas used to sleep for some time after the Fajr prayer because
he would spend most of the night awake. The reason for his [staying up late] was that, firstly, he often had to carry on his writing work at night, which would usually go on for a long time, and secondly, he also had to get up several times to relieve himself. Apart from that, the Promised Messiahas would also get up for Tahajjud prayer.” (Sirat-ulMahdi, Vol. 1, narration 4)
challenge to those who are in employment, but Allah the Exalted is the Provider. The obligatory Prayers ought to be offered at their prescribed times. On occasion, it is permissible to combine the Zuhr and Asr prayers. Allah Almighty made provision for this, for He knew that some would be weaker than others. However, this permission does not allow for three Prayers to be combined.” (Malfuzat [English], Vol. 1, p. 5)
Late morning activities
Mirza Din Muhammad Sahib of Langarwal, Gurdaspur, related to Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmadra in writing that, “I have been witnessing the Promised Messiahas since my childhood. To begin with, I observed him in the life of Mirza Ghulam Murtaza Sahib when I was just a child. It was the regular practice of the Promised Messiahas that he would go to sleep early at night after Isha and then get up for Tahajjud prayer at around 1am. After offering Tahajjud, he would recite the Holy Quran. Then, after the call to Fajr prayer was made, the Promised Messiahas would perform their sunnah prayers at home and go to the mosque to offer Salat in congregation. Sometimes, he would lead the prayer himself. Other times, Mian Jan Muhammad Sahib, who was the imam of the mosque, would lead the prayers. After the Fajr prayer, the Promised Messiahas would rest for a while. I never saw him performing sunnah prayers in the mosque. He would always offer sunnah prayers at home.” (Siratul-Mahdi, Vol. 1, narration 491) Prophet Ahmadas said: “If our entire lives are spent in worldly engagements, what will we have accumulated for the hereafter? Make a special effort to wake up for Tahajjud and offer it with fervour and joy. At times, the Prayers to be offered during the day pose a
Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmadra MA narrates: “It was a routine practice of the Promised Messiahas that he used to go out for a walk in the morning and his associates would accompany him. The Promised Messiahas would walk for a mile or two [on a daily basis].” (Sirat-ul-Mahdi, Vol. 1, narration 71) Generally, Prophet Ahmadas would not go out for walks on Fridays. Rather, he would be occupied in taking a shower, trimming hair, changing clothes, applying henna [to his hair], etc., in order to prepare for Jumu‘ah prayers. Owing to his concentrated schedule on Fridays, the Promised Messiahas would not go for walks. (Malfuzat, Vol. 3, p. 391) Hazrat Maulvi Rahim Bakhshra of Talwandi, Gurdaspur, states: “The Promised Messiahas went to Amritsar to look at the printing of the book, Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya. After observing the printing of Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya, he said to me, ‘Mian Rahim Bakhsh, let’s go for a walk.’ When we were strolling in the orchard, I said: ‘Hazrat! You go out for walks, but we have heard that saints are occupied day and night in the ibaadat [worship] of Allah the Almighty.’ Prophet Ahmadas replied, ‘There are two types of saints. Firstly, those who are mujahadah kash [go to great lengths in the way of God to achieve sainthood], i.e., Hazrat Baba Farid Ganjshakarrh. Then there are those who are muhaddathun [recipients of God’s word], i.e., Abu Al-Hassan AlKharaqani, Muhammad Akram Multani, Mujaddid-e-Alf-e-Thani, etc. The second type of saints are very superior in status. Allah the Almighty speaks very frequently to them and I am also one of them.’” (Siratul-Mahdi, Vol. 1, narration 789)
Noon and after Hazrat Dr Mir Muhammad Ismailra states: “Generally, Prophet Ahmadas would take his first meal of the day between 10am to when the call to Zuhr prayer was made. […] Occasionally, the Promised Messiahas would have his morning meal after Zuhr prayer.” (Sirat-ul-Mahdi, Vol. 1, narration 447) Continued on next page >>

Hazrat Dr Mir Muhammad Ismailra told Hazrat Sahibzada Mirza Bashir Ahmada MA that: “There was no particular time of the day when the Promised Messiahas would take a nap. He would rest according to his work. Sometimes, Prophet Ahmadas would spend half the night or so on his writing work. On other occasions, he would work all night long. After returning from the Fajr prayer, he used to rest for a while, and sometimes, he would not sleep after it. The Promised Messiahas would often go for a walk after sunrise. After leaving his residence, he would stop at the Ahmadiyya Square and wait for the visitors to arrive. Once everyone had gathered, Prophet Ahmadas would start walking.” (Sirat-ul-Mahdi, Vol. 1, narration 525) Hazrat Sheikh Yakub Ali Irfanira writes: “The Promised Messiahas used to go for a walk at around 8 or 9am on winter days, and in summers, he would go early in the morning. Prophet Ahmadas would walk for around two and a half miles for some fresh air, and during that time, current events and religious matters were discussed. At the same time, he would have some light conversation as well, but it was very decent and gentle.” (Hayat-e-Ahmad, Vol. I, p. 228)
Late afternoon Hazrat Sheikh Yakub Ali Irfanira states: “After Asr prayers, the Promised Messiahas would occasionally take a stroll in the Aqsa Mosque, and mostly, he used to go out for a walk. When he would go for a walk [after Asr prayers], Lala Malawa Mal and Lala Sharampat Rai would accompany him and if any other person was present, they would also join.” (Hayat-e-Ahmad, Vol. II, p. 94)
Through the agency of Maulvi Rahim Bakhsh Sahib MA, Hazrat Mirza Sultan Ahmad Sahib said: “It was regular practice of my father [Prophet Ahmadas] that in the evenings, he would go for a walk towards the Pahari Gate, i.e., to the north or the east side.” (Sirat-ulMahdi, Vol. 1, narration 193) Hafiz Noor Muhammad Sahib, a resident of Faizullah Chak, while narrating a tradition of his youth, says: “In those days, the Promised Messiahas used to go out for a walk after Asr prayers. Prophet Ahmadas would walk for around two kos [one kos is equal to approximately two miles].” (Sirat-ul-Mahdi, Vol. 1, narration 347)
Activities after sunset Hazrat Maulvi Abdul Karimra Sialkoti wrote that the mosque was the usual meeting place for the Promised Messiahas. If he was well, Prophet Ahmadas would [come to the mosque] and offer five daily prayers in congregation, and he used to emphasise on praying in congregation. […] After performing the obligatory prayers, the Promised Messiahas used to go to his room and get engaged in the writing work. However, after the Maghrib prayers, Prophet Ahmadas used to sit in the mosque. He would also have dinner with the friends and then go back to his room after offering the Isha prayer. The Promised Messiahas would also have lunch outside with the friends. (Sirat Hazrat Masih-e-Maudas, p. 43)
Night Hazrat Dr Mir Muhammad Ismailra states: “If the Promised Messiahas had dinner at home in the days when he would sit [in the mosque] between the time of the Maghrib and Isha prayers, he used to have it after
Isha. Generally, Prophet Ahmadas would take his dinner between the time of the Maghrib and Isha prayers.” (Sirat-ul-Mahdi, Vol. 1, narration 447) Malik Salahuddin Sahib MA states: “Apart from [offering the five daily prayers in congregation], the Promised Messiahas used to perform sunnah and nawafil prayers inside his house. The sunnah prayers performed before and after the obligatory prayers were usually offered at home by him. However, in the early days, when Prophet Ahmadas used to sit in the mosque between the time of the Maghrib and Isha prayers, he would perform the sunnah of the Maghrib prayers in the mosque.” (Ashab-e-Ahmad, Vol. 9, p. 155) The Promised Messiahas said: “The current state of my affairs is such that I close the doors of my house and remain occupied in the [writing] work all night long. […] The episodes of lightheadedness go from mild to severe, but I do not care and continue with the work. As the days are getting shorter, I fail to stay aware that the day has already gone by and I only come to know when the bucket of water is placed [near me] for ablution before the evening prayer. At that very moment, I regret it and wish I could be granted a full day’s time again. […] Likewise, when I am requested again and again to have a meal, I force myself to eat a few morsels in the shortest amount of time. Apparently, I am seen having bread, but the truth is I do not even know where it all goes or what I have eaten.” (Malfuzat [1984], Vol. 2, pp. 376-77)
Conclusion The Promised Messiahas said: “[…] No matter what work you are involved in – a trader in his trade, a farmer in his farming, or a king ruling from his throne

of governance – everyone should keep God as his objective in all his engagements, and may do whatever he desires while keeping His grandeur and awe in his mind, and respecting His commandments and His permissions and prohibitions. Do everything while being fearful of Allah. “Where does Islam teach that you should give up work and sit idle [...] and, instead of being of service to others, become a burden upon them? Nay! Laziness is a sin. How then could such an individual serve God or His religion? How would he feed the family of his which God has trusted to his care? “So remember that Allah does not wish for you to entirely give up this world. His wish is that:
ّٰ َ َْ َ ق ْد افل َح َم ْن زک َھا
[‘Surely, he prospers who augments it.’ (Surah ash-Shams, Ch.91: V.10)] “Do business, do farming, be employed, be a craftsman, do whatever you want, but restrain your egos from disobeying God, and purify your selves to such an extent that these worldly occupations fail to make you forgetful of God. Then your mundane worldly works will also become as though the fulfilment of your religious duties.” (Malfuzat [English], Vol. 10, pp. 330-331) Hence, the entire life of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas, the Promised Messiah and Mahdi was spent simultaneously in exalting the name of Allah the Almighty, manifesting the greatness of His beloved Messenger, Prophet Muhammdsa, and spreading true Islam to the corners of the world. At the same time, Prophet Ahmadas devoted his life to the welfare and reformation of mankind. Surely, every single day of his life was a practical representation of this Divine revelation: “You are the revered Messiah whose time shall not be wasted.” (Tadhkirah [English], p. 498)

Beyond human control: Examples of acceptance of prayers and trust in Allah
Awwab Saad Hayat & Jalees Ahmad Al Hakam
“‘Pray unto Me; I will answer your [prayer].’” (Surah al-Mu’min, Ch.40: V.61) The faith of a true believer remains unwavering, resembling a solid rock in the face of a relentless wave. They remain steadfast and resolute, particularly when circumstances are beyond human control. Presented below are several incidents from the lives of the Khulafa of the Promised Messiahas that exemplify divine intervention and unwavering trust in Allah.
Divine intervention: The miraculous cessation of rain in Qadian in the time of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira It is narrated that during the rainy season of 1909, Qadian – the hamlet of the Messiah and the abode of peace – experienced continuous rainfall for eight consecutive days, resulting in the collapse of numerous houses. On the 8th or 9th day, Hazrat Hakeem Noor-ud-Deen, Khalifatul Masih Ira, addressed the congregation after the Zuhr prayer, requesting them to collectively say “amin” in response to his prayer. He expressed that what he had prayed was something the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa had only done once in his entire life. Remarkably, at the time of the prayer, heavy rainfall had ceased, and by the time of the Asr prayer, the sky had cleared, and the sun was shining brightly. (Hayat-e-Nur, pp. 440441)
A request to the Divine: When rain resumed at Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II’sra return It is narrated that after a scorching day, the skies finally opened, and rain poured down. From the confines of Hazrat Mirza Bashirud-Deen Mahmood Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih II’sra room, he observed the view of the rain through an open window. However, at that particular moment, Huzoorra narrated, he had to leave his room, from which he was observing the rainfall. As the sight of the rain
unfolded before his eyes, Huzoorra stated that an unexpected request escaped his lips. He beseeched, “O Allah, bestow upon me the favour that even if the rain were to pause in the interim, it resumes the moment I return.” When Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIra re-entered the room and opened the door once more, a remarkable phenomenon occurred. Allah resumed the downpour as if in direct response to Huzoor’sra plea and prayer. (Tafsir-e-Kabir, Vol. 7, p. 30)
Divine Grace: Hazrat Musleh-eMaud’sra encounter with Divine power Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra once recounted a very memorable trip to the river with Hazrat Bhai Abdul Rahimra, who was also his childhood teacher, and several other friends who accompanied them on a boat. During this trip, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II’sra son, Sahibzada Mirza Nasir Ahmadrh, very innocently expressed his longing for fish, “Abba, it would be wonderful if we had some fish on this occasion.” Recognising the limitless power of Allah, Huzoor IIra affirmed that if it was His will, this desire could indeed come to fruition. Almost instantly, as Huzoorra finished speaking, a wave surged, and a large fish leapt into the boat. This remarkable event served as a powerful testament to the fact that Allah is the Creator, the Owner, and the Bestower of all blessings. (Khutbate-Mahmud, Vol. 36, Friday Sermon, 23 September 1955, p. 150
Divine protection: Hazrat Khalifatul Masih III’srh extraordinary experience The account of Hazrat Mirza Nasir Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih IIIrh, is beautifully documented by his eldest daughter. In the year 1979 or 1980, an incident unfolded that remains etched in history. During a majlis-e-‘irfan gathering after the Maghrib and Isha prayers at Baitul Fazl, Islamabad, Huzoorrh revealed a remarkable occurrence. He shared that on that particular evening, he was in Lahore, tending to his responsibilities
and ensuring his wife, Sayeda Mansoora Begum, received the necessary care in the hospital. Drawn to offer the Tahajjud prayers, Hazrat Mirza Nasir Ahmadrh had just settled down, placing his head on the pillow, when it was revealed to him that an imminent arrest was looming, and mere moments later, the military personnel arrived at his doorstep. Sahibzada Mirza Anas Ahmad Sahib, Huzoor’s son, vividly recalls the extraordinary scene. The military officer, tasked with the arrest, entered the premises. Addressing the officer with calm certainty, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIIrh said, “I knew you were coming, I was waiting.” Huzoorrh further narrated that on a scorching hot day in the prison, he was given a cramped, airless cell. This type of cell was reserved for those who were to receive execution the following day. The conditions were troublesome. With nothing but a rotten blanket and a rolled-up achkan to use as a pillow to rest his head, Huzoorrh narrated that the following two nights were troublesome. But in that moment of despair, Huzoorrh said that he turned to Allah and poured his heart out in prayer. He pleaded with Him, stating that he had never committed any wrongdoing and that his only intention was to exalt His name. Huzoorrh said that he found solace in knowing that he was part of a group established to spread love for the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa, and he had no regrets for the sacrifices he had made. As he continued to pray, something miraculous happened. A sudden cold breeze blew through the cell, and he felt as though an air conditioner had been installed right beside him. He fell into a deep and peaceful sleep, free from the sweltering heat that had proved to be troublesome. (Mahmud Mujeeb Asghar, Hayat-e-Nasir, p. 173)
Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIIrh and an incident of Divine grace In 1954, under the diligent guidance of Hazrat Musleh-e-Maud, Khalifatul Masih IIra, the young Sahibzada Mirza Nasir Ahmadrh assumed full responsibility for overseeing the construction of Rabwah College of
Education. Through days of scorching sunshine, Sahibzada Mirza Nasir Ahmadrh remained steadfast, faithfully carrying out the orders of Khalifatul Masih IIra, undeterred by the severity of the weather. It was during this period that a remarkable incident occurred, illuminating his profound connection with Allah. Chaudhry Muhammad Ali Sahib, who served as the principal of Talim Islam College, beautifully narrates this faithstrengthening account. He narrated that he had witnessed the wondrous miracles and blessings bestowed by Allah. As the time approached to lay the foundation stone for the hall, vast amounts of cement were being prepared and soaked. Suddenly, a dark cloud emerged, casting its shadow over the vicinity. With a gentle gesture, Sahibzada Mirza Nasir Ahmadrh raised his hand and spoke words, signifying that a large number of contributions were made by members of the Jamaat. Sahibzada Mirza Nasir Ahmadrh expressed concern that if rain were to fall, a significant amount of money raised by members of the Jamaat would be lost. His heartfelt plea resonated before Allah, and just as swiftly as it appeared, the cloud dispersed, acknowledging the acceptance of his supplication. (Mahmud Mujeeb Asghar, Hayat Nasir,, p.189)
Divine help for Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IVrh and downfall of a tyrant The incident of the downfall of the infamous dictator of Pakistan, General Zia-ul-Haq is widely known and serves as a profound example of those who persecuted righteous individuals, ultimately bringing upon themselves the wrath of God. It stands as a powerful testimony to the consequences that befall those who invite divine displeasure upon themselves. On 26 April 1984, Zia-ul-Haq, issued Ordinance XX, which made it unlawful for Ahmadis to engage in any kind of Islamic practice, from modes of worship to dress code, from greetings to using any terms Continued on page 9 >>

Love and obedience to Khilafat: Shining examples of Khulafa-e-Ahmadiyyat Jazib Mehmood Student Jamia Ahmadiyya International Ghana
“I am the Khalifatul Masih, as were my predecessors [...] and so just as they followed the Promised Messiahas in all matters and sought to fulfil his mission, so do I. Every Khalifa follows the guidance of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas of Qadian because we are his successors. “[…] When I took the bai‘at of the Khulafa who preceded me, it meant that I had sold myself. Bai’at literally means in Arabic to ‘sell yourself ’ and when you sell yourself it means that you no longer control your own destiny and that your life is in the hands of someone else. Thus, my relationship with the Khulafa who preceded me was exactly like this, that I listened to and obeyed them in every matter.” (Abid Khan, London Diary – Spring 2018, pp. 22–23) These are the words of the current worldwide head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih Vaa. They describe in perfect terms not just the meaning of Khilafat and the level of obedience it demands of us, but also call us to witness the magnificent examples of reverence, obedience and love that each Khalifa has had for their predecessor. In this article, we will observe some personal examples from each of the Khulafae-Ahmadiyyat which should leave no doubt that where they ask the Jamaat for complete obedience, they also practise it to perfection before wearing the mantle of Khilafat.
Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa Huzooraa presented an example of this obedience on one occasion: “When I was a student, the situation for Ahmadi Muslims in Pakistan became increasingly fraught and dangerous. As a result, some people very close to me suggested that I should not go back to university because it was too dangerous. Yet at that time, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIIrh told me not to be scared and instructed me to go and attend the classes. “Hence, perhaps the first great lesson he personally gave me was to instil courage and bravery in me. Where others were telling me that I would be beaten and mercilessly attacked if I went to university, my Khalifa told me to disregard any fear and to not let the conditions cower me and stop me from attending my classes.” (Abid Khan, London Diary – Spring 2018, p. 24) Speaking of his relationship with Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IVrh, Huzooraa states: “Of course, there was a close familial relationship between us, as he was my uncle and I had grown up with him and
had a close personal relationship with him from before his Khilafat. In fact, to some degree, there was frankness between us, but as soon as he was elected as Khalifatul Masih our relationship changed. It was as though a barrier had appeared, whereby the frankness from my side was converted into a complete and utter respect for him as my spiritual leader.” (Abid Khan, London Diary – Spring 2018, p. 25) He further stated: “In fact, in my heart, I was determined to be his most obedient follower and vowed that no matter what, I would listen and obey everything that he desired from me. I was determined that, more than anyone else, I would be the one who would honour and obey him at all
it right away. “When I checked [flights] for a seat, they were all booked. All the related individuals said that there was no question of a seat [being available] because twenty passengers were waiting. Therefore, even if a seat became available, they would give it to them first [and] there was no chance of me going. “I said, ‘Whether anyone else goes or not, I will definitely go because I have been given an order.’ Hence, I went to the airport. There was a queue of people. The passengers were waiting and a little while later all the people were told that the aeroplane had taken off. “After this announcement, everyone left. There was no one left there who could be given a chance to go, but I remained
message – despite the fact that he was wearing slippers – he rushed to meet the Khalifa. (Al Fazl Rabwah, 6 June 2003, p. 3)
Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIIrh Once, while Sahibzada Mirza Nasir Ahmadrh had yet to wear the mantle of Khilafat, he was working in Khuddamul Ahmadiyya. Out of some misunderstanding, one of Hazrat Musleh-e-Maud’sra wives complained to Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra about him. Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra was extremely displeased and scolded Sahibzada Mirza Nasir Ahmadrh. However, despite the fact that it was no fault of his, he remained silent and refused to deny the complaint made against him. He himself stated that he did so purely out of love for Hazrat Musleh-eMaudra and could not bear to displease him further. (Hazrat Mirza Nasir Ahmadrh by Hazrat Syeda Tahir Sadiqa Nasir, p. 166) Hazrat Musleh-e-Maud’s passing was hard on him. Once, in a sad tone, he stated to his wife: “During the lifetime of Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra, I considered it a sin to even consider his passing.” (Hazrat Mirza Nasir Ahmadrh by Hazrat Syeda Tahir Sadiqa Nasir, p. 165)
Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIra
times. (Ibid.) His reverence for the station of Khilafat as well is best explained in Huzoor’s own words: “When I was Nazir-e-A‘la in Rabwah, a person said to me that there were only two busy people in the world and that one was Khalifatul Masih IVrh and the other was me. I very rarely raised my voice, but on that occasion, I did raise my voice purposely so that even the people around me could hear. I said to him, that how dare you insult my Khalifa by comparing him to me?” (Abid Khan, A Personal Account – OctoberNovember 2016 Part 4, p. 65)
Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IVrh Once, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIIrh assigned Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmadrh a responsibility and asked him to go to East Bengal (present-day Bangladesh). Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmadrh narrates that: “In the days when there was a lot of chaos in Bangladesh (at that time it was called East Bengal), I was in Karachi. Hazrat KhalifatulMasih IIIra gave me the responsibility of completing a task and told me to leave for
standing there. I was certain that it would be impossible that I did not go. “Suddenly, a voice came from the desk, saying, ‘There is room for one passenger. Is there anyone who has a ticket?’ I said, ‘I have a ticket’; they said, ‘Run, the aeroplane is waiting for one passenger.’” (Al Fazl Rabwah, 25 September 1998) Once, he stated: “I held a servant-like love for [my] dear brother.” (Hazrat Mirza Nasir Ahmadrh by Hazrat Syeda Tahir Sadiqa Nasir, p. 166) His reverence and regard for the words of the Khalifa was demonstrated when he became Sadr Majlis Ansarullah in 1979; his first plan of action was to improve the system of preparing the cassettes of the Friday sermons of the Khalifa. For this, he ordered duplicators from Europe and streamlined the entire process so that copies could be made faster and distributed not just across the country, but across the world. This became instrumental when he became Khalifa and migrated to London. (Al Fazl Rabwah, 27 December 2003, p. 25) Once, it so happened that Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIIrh sent for him urgently. The moment he received the
Hazrat Maulvi Sher Alira states that: “During the time of the first Khilafat, I observed that the example of respect, reverence, obedience and submission that he [i.e., Hazrat Sahibzada Mirza Bashir-udDeen Mahmood Ahmadra] had for Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira was not found in any other person. His level of respect was such that whenever he would go in his presence, he would sit with folded legs and put his hands on his knees. He would sit like this for however long he would be in his presence. I have never seen this in any other person. Similarly, he would completely obey Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira in every matter.” His level of obedience was such that Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira also acknowledged it in a speech in 1912. He stated that Sahibzada Mirza Bashir-udDeen Mahmood Ahmadra obeyed him to such a degree that no one in the Jamaat could match it. (Tareekh-e-Ahmadiyyat, Vol. 3, p. 605) Their closeness was such that Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra once stated: “Forty-two years have passed since the demise of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira. However, I still sacrifice [an animal] on his behalf whenever it is the occasion to offer qurbani. […] Later, when I went on Hajj, I offered qurbani on his behalf on that occasion too and I have continued to offer qurbani on his behalf on the occasion of every Eid till today.” (Majlis Ansarullah Continued on next page >>

Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira The mutual love that existed between Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira and the Promised Messiahas is quite well-known in the literature of the Jamaat. There are many incidents that shine a light on his reverence for the Promised Messiahas. Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmadra states that once, when his younger brother, Mubarak Ahmad, was ill, the Promised Messiahas asked Hazrat Hakeem Noor-ud-Deenra to check on him. At the time, the Promised Messiahas was seated in the courtyard on a charpoy. There was no other place to sit. But when Hazrat Maulvira entered, he immediately sat on the floor by the charpoy out of respect. The Promised Messiahas said, “Maulvi Sahib, sit on the charpoy.” Hazrat Hakeem Noor-ud-Dinra replied, “Huzoor, I am seated”, he straightened and put his hands on the charpoy. When the Promised Messiahas asked again, he obliged but sat at the very corner of the charpoy. Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmadra, commenting on this incident, remarks that, “The spirit of obedience and respect in Maulvi Sahib was of the highest degree.” (Seerat-ul-Mahdi, Vol. 1, p. 57, narration no. 78) Once, it so happened that a Hindu from Batala took Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira with the permission of the Promised Messiahas for the treatment of his wife. The Promised Messiahas, while giving permission, said, “I hope that you will be back by the evening.” With this in mind, Hazrat Hakeem Noor-ud-Deenra reached Batala by the evening. He saw the patient, prescribed the medicine and took the same yakka (a twowheel small carriage drawn by a horse) for the return trip. The road was very bad; it was wholly muddy and the yakka could not move further. Instead of giving up, he left the yakka and started walking on foot. He was barefoot; his feet were wounded by thorns, but he kept walking and returned to Qadian by midnight. He met with the Promised Messiahas at the Fajr prayer and told him that he was back in the night, never mentioning what had happened to him. (Hakeem Noor-ud-Deen by Syed Hasanat Ahmad, pp. 173–174) Testifying to this love that Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira had for the Promised Messiahas, Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra once spoke about his condition after the passing of the Promised Messiahas. He states: “Those who are familiar with the high resolve of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira will know just how strong he was; he would never let his grief and worries show. However, when he was alone and no one else was around, he would often remark to me, that: ‘Mian! Ever since Hazrat Sahib[as] passed away, my body feels hollow, and the world feels empty. I walk amongst people and work too, but I still feel as though nothing remains in this world.’” (Friday Sermon 14 April 1926; Khutbat-e-Mahmood, Vol. 1, pp. 144–145) May Allah enable us to make our best efforts to uphold these outstanding examples of obedience and love for Khilafat. Amin.

that were Islamic, and it also included not having Muslim names. This resulted in Hazrat Khalifatul Masih’s IVrh migration from Pakistan to London. The persecution grew more relentless as time passed. Then, on 10 June 1988, Harat Mirza Tahir Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih IVrh, issued a challenge to Zia-ul-Haq, the President of Pakistan at that time, through a Mubahala. This prayer contest invoked Allah’s curse and wrath upon the party spreading deliberate falsehoods, with the divine wrath expected to descend upon them within a year. Despite repeated warnings from Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IV’srh, to cease the persecution against the Jamaat, Ziaul-Haq persisted in his oppressive actions. Huzoorrh declared that, on 12 August, by disregarding the pleas and escalating the hostility, Zia-ul-Haq had sealed his own fate. On 17 August, a few days after Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IV’srh sermon, President Zia-ul-Haq and many of his associates died in a plane crash, which was found to be an inexplicable accident. This incident was regarded by Ahmadis as a profound manifestation of divine support in their struggle against persecution. Although Ahmadi Muslims firmly adhere to non-violence, it is believed that on certain occasions, God Himself manifests His displeasure towards those who inflict harm upon them.
The miraculous dissipation of a tsunami in Fiji: ‘Do not worry, Allah the Almighty will bestow His grace, nothing will happen’ On 4 May 2006, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih Vaa was in Fiji during his visit to the Far East countries. Disturbing news had spread across the television channels, announcing the arrival of a massive tsunami storm in the neighbouring Tonga Islands, surpassing even the devastating Indonesian tsunami that claimed countless lives. The destructive power of this storm seemed unparalleled, leaving many countries in ruins. Further, the reports echoed the escalating intensity and force of this tsunami, predicting the submersion of the entire Nandi Fiji area by morning. At 4:30 in the morning, during the hour of Fajr prayer, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa arrived to lead the congregation. A report on the storm and the concerned inquiries were presented to Huzooraa. With unwavering faith, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa performed prolonged prostrations and beseeched God in fervent prayer. Upon completing the prayer, Huzooraa addressed the congregation, comforting them with these resolute words, “Do not worry, Allah the Almighty will bestow His grace, nothing will happen.” Directly thereafter, the news began to report that the strength of the tsunami was diminishing and that its intensity was gradually subsiding. After approximately two and a half hours, it was announced that the storm had completely vanished. The world witnessed an extraordinary spectacle as the tsunami, predicted to engulf the entire region and claim countless lives
within hours, dissipated swiftly in response to the prayer of the Khalifa of the time. The newspapers in Fiji later highlighted that the avoidance of the tsunami was nothing short of a miraculous occurrence. (Hazrat Masih Maudas aur Khulafa ke Ta‘alluq billah ke waqi’at, pp. 110-111)
‘After 10 minutes, we shall offer our prayer.’
During his visit to Africa in 2004, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih Vaa arrived in Benin from Nigeria and reached the Mission House. It was Asr time, and the rain was pouring heavily. A marquee had been erected in the courtyard for prayers, but it was open from all sides, making it impossible to pray there due to the rain. The situation was further complicated as it was difficult to even stand. Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa inquired about the situation. Amir Sahib informed him that due to the heavy rain, a marquee had been arranged, but it was proving challenging to offer prayers there. Hazrat Khalfatul Masih Vaa lifted his gaze to the sky and calmly stated, “After 10 minutes, we shall offer our prayer.” With those words, Huzooraa withdrew inside. Astonishingly, mere moments later, the rain ceased. The clouds dispersed, unveiling a clear sky, and the radiant sun emerged from behind the veils of grey. The prayer was promptly arranged beneath the shelter of the marquee. The local members of the jamaat, astounded by this spectacle, marvelled at the divine sign before them. Typically, in that region, once rainfall commenced, it persisted for hours. Yet Huzoor’saa mention of 10 minutes brought about an end within a mere three minutes, not only ceasing the rain but also dispersing the clouds entirely. (Al Fazl International, 25 September 2015 1 October 2015, p. 14)
Entrusting the matter to Allah During Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V’saa visit to Canada, on the eve of laying the foundation stone of the Calgary Mosque, Amir Sahib of Canada approached Huzooraa with concerns
regarding the weather forecast. He informed Huzooraa that the forecast predicted severe conditions for the following day, including heavy rain, stormy weather, and strong winds. The next morning, the mosque’s foundation stone ceremony was scheduled, with guests expected to attend. In light of this, Amir Sahib humbly requested Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa to pray to Allah. Upon hearing this, Huzooraa took a moment to reflect before responding. Huzooraa said, “The mosque’s foundation stone we are about to lay is a house of God, and the weather is also under His control.” Huzooraa advised them to entrust the matter to Allah, assuring them that Allah would take care and bestow His blessings accordingly. The following morning, there was no trace of rain; instead, the weather was delightful and pleasant. The foundation stone ceremony proceeded smoothly, lasting approximately two hours. As Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa was about to depart and enter his car, the moment the car door closed, an unexpected downpour accompanied by strong winds began. This relentless rainfall and gusty winds persisted for a continuous three to four hours. The occurrence served as a clear incident, manifesting the power of Huzoor’saa supplication. Witnessing this remarkable incident, every heart humbled itself before the Almighty Allah. (Al Fazl International, 25 September 2015 - 1 October 2015, p.14)
A Divine connection enduring the weather: MTA’s stable connection during Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa’s speeches During his Friday Sermon of 5 August 2005, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa made a significant observation regarding the Jalsa Salana UK. Huzooraa said that typically, heavy rain would affect the connection of MTA (Muslim Television Ahmadiyya). However, whenever it rained during his speech, the connection remained remarkably stable. Huzooraa said that the management expressed concern that there was a chance for the link, in such weather circumstances, to occasionally falter. The representatives of the company responsible for transmitting the signal beyond the venue were British gentlemen. They remarked that in such weather conditions, the connection usually falters, and went on to remark that it appeared the Jamaat possessed a special connection with God, Who helped in this regard. (Friday Sermon, 5 August 2005)
Conclusion These are just a few instances from the lives of the Caliphs of the Messiah, showcasing the countless daily incidents of faith, that occur with God’s chosen Khulafa. A closer look at their lives reveals abundant manifestations of God’s grace and assistance in matters beyond human control. Allah’s grace always accompanies His chosen ones, and why wouldn’t it? The Khalifatul Masih is the successor of that very Messiahas who was prophesied to have come by the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa, who was informed about it by Allah Himself.

Nusrat Jehan Scheme Khilafat’s impetus for ‘Africa to Leap Forward’ A glimpse into early years (1982-2003) Ata-ul-Haye Nasir Al Hakam
Last year, Al Hakam published an article about the early years of the Nusrat Jehan Scheme, which covered the time of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIIrh (“Nusrat Jehan Scheme: Khilafat’s impetus for ‘Africa to Leap Forward’ – A glimpse into the early years (1970-1982)”, Al Hakam, 27 May 2022, Issue 219, pp. 16-18). Continuing the series, this article will present the history of the Nusrat Jehan Scheme during the time of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IVrh. During his address at the Jalsa Salana Rabwah 1982, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IVrh said: “Among the milestones achieved by Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIIrh, the one glorious achievement is that after launching the Nusrat Jehan Scheme, he granted it such great guidance that within a short time, the grace of Allah the Almighty filled it with great blessings, and the Jamaat also cooperated in such a manner that one has to greatly admire them. […] This scheme, in the beginning, was initiated with an amount of 5.3 million rupees, and now its budget for only this year is 46.9 million rupees. During this year [1982], by the grace of God, Allah the Almighty has granted cure to 2,20,000 people through this scheme, and enabled the Jamaat to carry out 4,471 successful [medical] operations.” (Silsila-e-Ahmadiyya, Vol. 4, p. 565) In 1977, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIIrh had sent Sahibzada Mirza Masroor Ahmadaa to Ghana under the Nusrat Jehan Scheme. He served there as the headmaster of the Ahmadiyya Secondary Schools in Salaga and Essarkyir. Moreover, he served as the manager of the Ahmadiyya Agricultural Farm in Tamale, and in accordance with the instructions of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IVrh, he successfully experimented with the growth of wheat in Ghana, which was the first time that it was revealed that wheat could grow in Ghana. He also experimented with the cultivation of soybeans, and it was then that the high nutritional value of soybeans was brought to the attention of the Ghanaian public. Sahibzada Mirza Masroor Ahmadaa served in Ghana up until 1985. (“Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih V – Service in Ghana”, www.reviewofreligions.org) During the time of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IVrh, the schools and hospitals in Africa that had been functioning since the time of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIra, were brought under the supervision of the Nusrat Jehan Scheme. Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IVrh established a committee for this purpose, which later presented to him its proposals to merge the schools and hospitals working
under Tahrik-e-Jadid and Nusrat Jehan Scheme, and then Huzoorrh granted its approval. He announced this merger on 30 June 1985. In accordance with Huzoor’srh instructions, a secretary was appointed to oversee the Nusrat Jehan scheme. Maulana Muhammad Ismail Munir was appointed as the first secretary. (Tarikh-e-Ahmadiyyat, Vol. 26, p. 144) During his address at the Jalsa Salana UK 1988, Huzoorrh said: “Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya will oversee this work [service to humanity in Africa] and will ensure that the aim of any new connection that is made with Africa, will not be to exploit it, but rather, we will strive to transform the situation of its people. We
and seemed to be very impressed with it. “Therefore, I have decided – when I say this, it does not mean myself alone, but rather, I speak on behalf of the Jamaat – in fact, it should be said that the worldwide Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya has decided to extend its cooperation with this country more than before and to search new avenues for serving, and in addition to benefiting the pious-hearted people of this country from the religious and spiritual aspect, we should benefit them from the worldly aspect as well. Moreover, I hope that during my visit to the other African countries as well, such matters will come to light that will make us raise our determination to serve the people of those countries and give us the opportunity to

will change the practice [of the past], where the wealth would move from Africa to other places. Now, our objective, endeavour, prayer, and all desires are that may the wealth begin to move from the outside world into Africa. […] Africa, which has been deprived of its rights, will regain its rights.” (Silsila-eAhmadiyya, Vol. 4, p. 565) On 22 January 1988, during his Friday Sermon from The Gambia, Huzoorrh initiated the second phase of the Nusrat Jehan Scheme, titled “Nusrat Jehan-e-Nau”: “The worldwide Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya has already been granted the opportunity by God Almighty to serve this country as much as possible. Hence, Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya is rendering such prominent services in The Gambia in the fields of education and health, that whichever dignitary I have met here – the prominent people in the sight of the world, whether they are government officials or holders of other high posts – have all particularly appreciated this [service]
pray for them as well. “From a historical point of view, the way Africa has been treated can be summarised as thus that various foreign nations invaded it and carried out various tasks here in the name of ‘progress’. However, in short, they earned it in Africa and then used it in foreign world. “God Almighty has powerfully instilled this scheme in my heart to turn this history through Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya, that the whole worldwide Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya should earn in the [foreign] world and then spend it in Africa, and may God enable Ahmadiyyat to create the means for the healing of those wounds which have been afflicted upon you by others, the foreigners. The foreigners who have looted your wealth, will not return it for sure, however, [God] will enable the true servants of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa – Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya – to give them the wealth that was looted [by the foreigners in the past]. At this time, there
is not enough time to narrate the details of those schemes on which work has already been started prior to this sermon. “At the time, in light of the consultation that had already taken place, for instance, during a meeting of your country’s majlis-eamila, various aspects have been pondered over as to how we can serve The Gambia more than ever before. Hence, in light of those consultations, at this time, I instruct all Ahmadi jamaats of the world to make a firm resolve, and be prepared to serve Africa in all fields with more fervour, for the sake of Allah alone.” (Khutbat-e-Tahir, Vol. 7, pp. 56-58) Huzoorrh then stated that there is a great need for Ahmadi doctors, teachers, engineers, agriculturists, and industrialists, to devote themselves to this cause: “This scheme is not related to the financial aspect [alone], but rather, it relates to the ‘wealth’ of expertise [as well]. Thus, in َٰۡ َ ُ ۡ light of the guidance: ‘[ َو ِم ّما َرزقن ُہ ۡم یُنفِقوۡ َنAnd spend out of what We have provided for them.’ (Surah al-Baqarah, Ch. 2: V. 4)] everyone is required to prepare for presenting their high expertise to serve Africa, for the sake of God, and to inform me about their credentials. [...] “All these people [belonging to the fields mentioned above] are my addressees, however, I do not address them from the aspect that they come here to make any investment by following the footsteps of those nations who invested in the past and left these countries after looting them, but rather, they have been addressed from the perspective that they should present their prowess and knowledge to serve Africa. [...] They should visit here under the system of the Jamaat and formulate such plans that may enable the local people to stand on their own two feet and benefit from their knowledge to enhance their country’s wealth and also benefit themselves as a result. [...] “The need for service [to humanity in Africa] is continuously increasing, and thus, in regards to all these needs, I announce the ‘Nusrat Jehan-e-Nau’. This new department, ‘Nusrat Jehan-e-Nau’ will ponder over all these matters to carry forward the work of the former ‘Nusrat Jehan’ [Scheme] with a new passion and enthusiasm. Moreover, it will formulate all these needs and, inshaAllah Ta‘ala, will enable the Jamaat to serve Africa in new avenues. “This is a strange act of God and fortune for The Gambia that the scheme of ‘Nusrat Jehan Awwal’ had been initiated from this very country, meaning your country, and God had enabled Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIIrh to announce the ‘Nusrat Jehan Scheme’ Continued on next page >>

100 Some of worldwide tabligh efforts during era of
Years Khalifatul Masih II Ago... The Review of Religions [English], May & June 1923 Qadian, India His Holiness, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II[ra] is in good health and is busy devising plans to combat the Shuddhi Movement (of the conversion of Muslims to Hinduism) in some districts of the United Provinces. About 100 of our preachers are working in the affected area under the guidance of Chaudhry Fateh Muhammad Sayal MA. Fifty more workers will very shortly be sent to relieve those whose terms of employment are about to expire. His Holiness is fully determined not to leave the affected districts until we have done our best to save the Malkanas, whose beliefs and faith are being corrupted. Our work there is defensive and we have begun our peaceful preaching campaign with full force in other parts of India. Nearly 700 Ahmadis – a number comprising barristers, graduates, pleaders, big landlords and great merchants have offered themselves to work as honourary preachers. The enthusiasm that permeates the Ahmadis can well be gauged from the fact that men of very high social standing consider themselves very fortunate if they are allowed to work in one of the hottest regions of India in the hottest part of the year.

from the land of The Gambia. Now, for the announcement of its second phase as well, Allah the Almighty has granted this honour to your land. May Allah bless this honour to you and may He enable this scheme, just like the first one, to flourish under His grace and mercy. Amin.” (Ibid, pp. 58-60) The idea behind this new dimension of this scheme was to help the African nations help themselves. Under this initiative, highly qualified Ahmadis in all fields of life – doctors, engineers, businessmen, and industrialists – had been asked to share their knowledge with the developing countries of Africa. Specialists in these fields devoted their time to offering their skills so that African nations could stand on their own two feet. This initiative was unique because it aimed at training the Africans to become independent of any foreign aid, which in the long run meant ever more shackles for these nations. (“100 Years of Ahmadiyyat in the Service of Mankind”, The Review of Religions, Vol. 85, No. 2, February 1990, pp. 41-42) During his address at the Jalsa Salana UK 1998, Huzoorrh said: “Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya has the opportunity to act upon another ْ ْ َْ َْ ْ َ َْْ ْ interpretation of ان ِ ان َو ِعل ُم الابد ِ َان; ِعل ُم الا ْدی ِ العِل ُم ِعل َم, and that knowledge is [ شفاءcure]. One meaning of this saying of the Holy Prophetsa َ َْْ ْ is that ان ِ ِعل ُم الابدmeans the knowledge of the physical cure, and many of the scholars also give precedent to this [meaning]. Therefore,
To a superficial view, Islam seems to be losing ground to Hinduism in India, but those who, like the famous Dr Tagore, are endowed with foresight and acumen, have said that the present struggle between Islam and Hinduism shall end in a stupendous defeat for the latter. The signs are already visible.
America After working unremittingly and incessantly for seven long years in England and America and after undergoing great hardships and encountering discouraging oppositions and hindrances, which consequently be overcome, Dr Mufti Sadiq is about to start back in India. He is expected to start in July [1923] and reach India somewhere in September of next year. Maulvi Muhammad Din BA, the late editor of “The Review of Religions” Qadian, has reached America to relieve Mufti Sahib. It is impossible to give a detailed account of the work done by Dr Sadiq during his stay in England and America. He has had such a bright career as a missionary and has scored such great success that it requires a very long article to describe them. Suffice it to say
from this perspective as well, worldwide Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya has the opportunity, by the grace of Allah the Almighty, to establish a vast number of hospitals and small clinics. In regards to the major hospitals, this task began under the Nusrat Jehan Scheme, and since then, it has expanded to a great extent. The major hospitals that have been established, include 31 hospitals in ten African countries where 35 doctors are serving.” (Silsila-eAhmadiyya, Vol. 4, p. 567) In 2003, under the Nusrat Jehan Scheme, there were 36 hospitals and clinics functioning in 12 African countries, and there were 373 secondary high schools, junior schools, and nursery schools working in eight African countries. The details of these hospitals and schools can be found in Silsila-e-Ahmadiyya, Vol. 4, pp. 567-569. In short, the Nusrat Jehan Scheme continued to flourish during the time of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IVrh. Today, as we are living in the blessed time of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa, this scheme is continuing to flourish and playing its role more than ever before. The worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat is reaping its great fruits and will continue to do so. Insha-Allah! (We will insha-Allah publish an article next year that will present the history and progress of the Nusrat Jehan Scheme during the first 20 blessed years of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa.)
that the Mufti started for England in 1916, a year when the Great European War was in its full swing and the German submarines were patrolling the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean and every ship bound for England was feared to fall an easy victim to them. The aged Mufti faced these dangers under the directions of his master, the Khalifa, leaving behind small children under Divine protection. The ship had not reached the Mediterranean when the Mufti was told by God that the ship shall be saved for him. He told the captain of the ship the promise of a safe arrival in England that God had given him. The captain was at first astonished to hear this from Mufti Sahib, but on his safe arrival in England, he believed in the truth of the words of God. During his four years’ stay in England, the Mufti Sahib earned a great and wide reputation as a Muslim missionary and was successful in gaining over one hundred converts to Islam. After his successful work in England, he was commanded by Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II[ra] to proceed to America to start a new mission there. On arriving at the American seaport, he was refused entry on the ground that he was a follower of a religion which allowed and preached polygamy. The learned Mufti, however, succeeded at last in getting admission into the country. During his stay in America, the Mufti secured over 400 converts to Islam and started a quarterly magazine, The Moslem Sunrise, to educate the ignorant Americans in the fundamental doctrines and outstanding beauties of Islam. The magazine has gained wide popularity and its issues are anxiously awaited by a majority of Americans. Moreover, the Mufti has been able to erect a mosque in Chicago, the birthplace of the infamous Dowie, who died an ignominious death as a result of a prayer duel he fought with the Promised Messiah[as]. A brief sketch of his present activities is given by Maulvi Muhammad Din in his latest letter, dated 5 April [1923].
The Maulvi Sahib writes: “Through the grace of God, I reached Chicago on 29 March [1923]. The Mufti, along with some new Muslim friends, was at the railway station to receive me. I reached the Masjid within a very short time in a motor car. The Masjid as regards its accommodation, extension and general management, far exceeds the Masjid in London. Yesterday was Sunday and though it was the first of April 1923, celebrated as April Fools’ Day, more than fifty men and women of all ages assembled to hear the Mufti. I saw that educated old men and learned youth all repeated like children in a loud voice the outstanding doctrines of Islam and the words of the Islamic prayer uttered by Dr Mufti Sadiq. Some of them were so completely engrossed in this act of memorising and repetition that I cannot conceive that, save for the remembrance of God, they had any other thought in their heads for three consecutive hours from 11am to 2pm. Dr Mufti was engaged in giving lessons. I am much interested in educational work and I have been a teacher myself, but I had never seen, in the whole of my life, such a teacher, such a class or such a manner of teaching. At 3pm the Mufti was to give a lecture on “The Life of Buddha.” Without interruption and without taking his food, the Mufti Sahib began wholeheartedly to prepare the lecture, which continued till 5pm before an audience quite different from those who were given lessons by him. Seeing these meetings, I have come to appreciate the great and noble work done by Mufti Sahib and now I have realized the vast field of work that lies before us. Hundreds and thousands of people are interested in Islam.” In his second letter, Maulvi Muhammad Din writes: “In the last week, four Christians embraced Islam. Every Monday and Wednesday, Arabic classes are held. This week, Mufti Sahib delivered four lectures. On Saturday, from 11am to 2pm, the classes were held as usual. At 3 pm, Mufti Sahib gave a lecture on “Islam, Christianity and Coloured Races,” before a large audience. The hall was packed to its utmost capacity. The Mufti spoke for a full hour and explained that practically the entire Christian world had abjured Christianity and followed Islam in all branches of life, i.e., marriage, mutual dealings, way of life, administration of government, education and culture. All these points were exhaustively dealt with, and the lecture was quite peculiar and of its own kind. The audience was so impressed that at the end of the lecture, an old man of reputed erudition stood up and said, ‘Christianity has kept us quite in the dark and if there is Continued on next page >>

any religion in the world which can properly guide us it is that religion which the Mufti has presented before us today.’ Besides other people, he and his wife promised to come to the next lectures.” Dr Mufti Sadiq, in his last letter of 7 April [1923], writes: “My photo and that of the mosque, which was taken by the agents of the associated press, have been published in all the papers of the country and have proved a good means of propagation. I have received many letters full of questions about Islam. Last Sunday, two gentlemen were taken into the fold of Islam and were named Abdul Wali and Abdul Karim. Maulvi Muhammad Din has reached safe and sound and has read to our new brothers the message of His Holiness[ra], which was listened to with rapt attention and much appreciated. The American Mission, with its headquarters in Chicago, has branches in St. Louis and Detroit. Both of these places have lecture halls and libraries. Sheikh Ahmad Din and Sheikh Abdus Salam, who were formerly Christian missionaries, have been appointed amirs (heads) of the two places, respectively. They work quite zealously without getting any remuneration. ‘The Moslem Sunrise’, is being conducted quite efficiently and regularly.”
London, England Owing to long and continuous hard work, the health of Mr Nayyar, our Nigerian missionary, had suffered a great shock and he had to leave Nigeria for England for a change of climate and recuperation. But the Nayyar knows no rest, and he is busy working as hard in England as he was in Nigeria. Under
his directions, open-air lectures and lectures in the mosque are regularly held and Islamic literature is freely distributed. In his latest letter, dated 3 May [1923]. Mr Nayyar writes that he had a meeting with Colonel Douglas, “the Second Pilate,” i.e., Lt. Col Montagu William Douglas CSI, CIE. The Colonel was struck with wonder to see the strikingly rapid progress of the Ahmadiyya Community. Surely, Colonel Douglas could never conceive that the followers of a man who lived in a remote corner of the Punjab and who once stood before him in the capacity of an accused person at Gurdaspur prosecuted for alleged conspiracy to take the life of a Christian missionary would one day come over to England to convert it to Islam. He was already interested in the Promised Messiah[as] and in the Ahmadiyya Community and he was quite naturally delighted to see the splendid work done by our missionaries in England. On the occasion of the marriage of HRH Duke of York, the imam of the Ahmadiyya mosque sent a congratulatory telegram to their Imperial Majesties. The Private Secretary of His Imperial Majesty very kindly gave the following prompt answer by wire: “I am commanded to thank you for your loyal and dutiful message to their majesties on the occasion of the marriage of the Duke of York.”
Nigeria, Africa M Mohammad Yaqub, President of the Ahmadiyya Executive Committee, writes to Mr Nayyar: “You will be glad to know that the work is going on as regularly and successfully as ever. The new converts, Yahya Williams, Murtala Devishan and others, attend prayers and lectures punctually. I feel great pleasure in conveying to you that the seeds
sown by you are developing into a strong and big plant.” Imam Qasim, incharge Lagos Mission, writes to Brother Nayyar: “There are 800 students on roll in our school and young men are joining the movement in such large numbers that we are running short of bai‘at forms. The chief imam is making strenuous efforts to ameliorate the condition of the Ahmadis.” The second item of the rules and regulations of the Ahmadiyya Community of Nigeria shall be read with interest. It runs as follows: “The community, like its sister communities in different parts of the world, owes allegiance to His Holiness the Khalifatul Masih II[ra] at Qadian, who is the spiritual head of all the Ahmadis and the central and final authority on all religious matters. “Since October last, we have gained more than 1,000 converts in Nigeria. The chief of Ovode, whose Christian name is Daniel, is about to join the fold of Ahmad[as] with the whole of his community. His father was a Muslim, but he, like other nobles, had become Christian.”
Gold Coast, Africa Hakim Fazal-ur-Rahman, our missionary in Gold Coast, reports that he is busy devising schemes and collecting funds for the erection of a mosque in Saltpond. He hopes that in the near future, 80 per cent of Christians and infidels will embrace Islam.
Germany Our readers will be glad to know that we are about to erect a mosque in Berlin. The expenses to be incurred in the building of the mosque shall be defrayed from the
Berlin Mission Fund, exclusively raised by our sisters. They were required by Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II[ra], the Head of the Community, to collect Rs. 50,000 within 3 months. God be praised, the sum exceeded this limit before the expiration of the fixed date. Our sisters are deserving of every congratulation and we are well proud of the splendid example set by them. They have evinced an enthusiasm and zeal for the dear cause of Islam that, if it does not exceed, is at least not surpassed by the ardour demonstrated by our brethren. M Mubarak Ali BA is now in charge of the Berlin Mission. Some time ago, he wrote private letters to the notable personages in Germany and to the ex-Kaiser inviting him to join Islam, as in it alone he would get the contentment of mind that he badly wanted now. A learned professor of Hungary has been so deeply impressed by reading “The Present to the Prince of Wales” that he intends to translate it into all the European languages he knows. A doctor of literature has promised similar translations of “The [Philosophy of the] Teachings of Islam.” M Mubarak Ali is expected to come back to India before September next year. Shaikh Ghulam Farid MA will take his place.
Egypt Sheikh Mahmud Ahmad, our missionary in Egypt, is working there very sincerely and zealously. He has secured over two dozen converts to Islam Ahmadiyyat, some of whom are very influential. The Sheikh Sahib intends to start a weekly Al-Bushra from Alexandria. We wish him every success. God be with him in all his undertakings. Lajna Imaillah Mauritius Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya Glasgow holds interfaith events on Eid-ul-Fitr Nushreen Jamal Ahmad Sadr Lajna Imaillah Mauritius
Eid-ul-Fitr is the perfect occasion to bring together our sisters of all faiths; from our friends, colleagues, neighbours, faith and civic leaders, representatives of municipal and village councils to parliamentarians, 432 non-Ahmadi ladies attended Eid events held across the island from 30 April to 6 May 2023. The events commenced with the recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by addresses from various guests and a speech on “Service to Humanity: A Form of Worship”. After this, short videos were played from the virtual mulaqats with Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa. After the formal programme, lunch was served to the guests. A copy of our magazine, Najm us Saqib was then gifted to the attendees. Mrs Mandevi Ramasawmy, President
of a Tamil Temple, praised the fact that Ahmadis expect nothing in return for whatever good they might accomplish. Many ladies in attendance were surprised to see Muslim women, while observing their purdah, handle the organisation of such an event from beginning to end. This certainly helps to clarify some of the stereotypes about Muslim women and their role in society. Mrs Maya Hanoomanjee, who served our country as former Minister of Health and speaker of the National Assembly, writes: “Your association is very dynamic. The organisation today was perfect. I spent a most pleasurable moment with you all. I will be at your service any time you need me”. Many guests in attendance, such as the Honourable Ms Naveena Ramyad, Chief Government Whip, were thankful for the warm welcome, the food served and above all, the smile of our Lajna members.

Friday Sermon Mubarak Mosque, Islamabad, Tilford, UK
28 April 2023 Patience, prayers, steadfastness and humility After reciting the tashahhud, ta‘awwuz and Surah al-Fatihah, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa stated: Due to the hostile conditions faced by the Jamaat – particularly in Pakistan and other places – some people write to me presenting their arguments, wherein they insist that instead of just demonstrating patience, the Jamaat should also retaliate and that they have been patient long enough. They try to cite the examples of Hazrat Musleh-eMaudra claiming that he gave permission to the Jamaat to retaliate during certain situations during his time. These are all false statements that have been attributed to Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra and they have erred in their understanding of these matters. Someone may have come across or read certain incidents, but misunderstood them. Indeed, Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra took certain measures whilst remaining within the parameters of the law, but he never gave permission to protest heedlessly like rioters. Moreover, if ever there was a campaign that took the form of a protest, it was done with the permission of the Khalifa of the time. It was not the case that every official gathered his people together and began a protest independently. Nevertheless, prior to the partition, when the British ruled over India, some British officers and some other hostile officials tried many times to label, or portray the speeches of Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra as provocative, so that he could be detained. However, they failed on every occasion, because Hazrat Musleh-eMaudra would show these opponents and government officials their true colours and would conclude his addresses by advising the Jamaat that the responsibility of the communities established by prophets is to demonstrate patience and to abide by the law. This was acknowledged even by the hostile officials at that time, who said that during Hazrat Musleh-e-Maud’sra speeches, they believed that they would be able to detain him and try to arrest him on account of charges of rebellion and creating disorder. However, when the address would conclude, he would guide the Jamaat in a completely different manner than what they perceived
and he would prohibit the Jamaat from breaking the law. Thus, this would destroy the schemes of these hostile officers. Moreover, how could it be that Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra would say something contrary to the teachings of Islam and contrary to the teachings of the Promised Messiahas? The Promised Messiahas has urged the Jamaat on countless occasions to remain patient and to offer supplications. He has clearly stated that those who are on weak footing and unable to walk with me on these thorny and rocky paths, as it were, and those who are unable to act with patience, may leave me. (Anwar-ul-Islam, Ruhani Khazain, Vol. 9, pp. 23- 24) Indeed, patience is the hallmark of the Jamaat around the world. Many politicians and journalists ask me as well and I often answer them that among those very individuals, who cause us pain and commit cruelties against us, are the people who in turn become Ahmadis. Despite these cruelties, people are also joining us, by the grace of Allah the Almighty. Our disposition was the same as theirs and we could have also retaliated in the same manner. However, we have accepted the Imam of the Age, who has taught us that in order to establish peace and in order to become the recipients of the favours of Allah the Almighty, one must act with patience. You may certainly try to obtain your rights while remaining within the parameters of the law. In certain instances, the Promised Messiahas has also exhorted us to leave the matter in the hands of God Almighty and not to take any legal action. He exhorted us to leave the matter in the hands of Allah the Almighty and said that God Almighty would personally come to our aid, and He most certainly did! Hence, it should be clear that this is the practice of the prophets and this is what the Promised Messiahas taught us; that we have to act with patience. Nevertheless, people are left astounded at this response, but also praise it, saying that this is the true response of those who live in peace.
I wish to expound further for those who have raised these points in relation to Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra in light of one of his sermons. In this sermon, Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra explained the meaning of patience in great detail and shed light upon it; in fact, thereafter, he started a series of sermons on high morals, linking them to the topic of patience. In any case, drawing on this sermon, I shall shed light on some of those aspects. Likewise, I shall also present some excerpts of the guidance imparted to us by the Promised Messiahas, which he mentioned on various occasions with regard to the subject of patience. Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra has stated that demonstrating patience is extremely vital and said that it is a primary and most important responsibility of those communities established by prophets, without which no community can make progress, nor can they make the world follow in their footsteps. Furthermore, no community of the past has achieved success without fulfilling this responsibility. Patience is of two kinds. Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra further explained, and he even mentioned this in his commentary on various [Quranic] verses, that one type of patience is when an individual has the ability to react to something but shows patience instead. The second type of patience is when one is powerless to confront something; hence, one has no other option but to demonstrate patience. When one has the power to react, but chooses to demonstrate patience in the face of those who perpetrate evil and disorder, just as the opponents are treating us; we must not respond in like manner and instead display the utmost patience for the sake of Allah the Almighty. On the other hand, to show patience when one is powerless is to be content with the will of Allah and to display patience and gratitude in the face of heavenly trials. Nevertheless, patience in Urdu means simply to remain quiet, but in Arabic, it has
a very comprehensive meaning. When we look up the meanings in Arabic, we learn the true connotations of patience and how a believer must display patience. Allah the Almighty has commanded in various places that one exercise patience. Keeping in mind the true meanings of the word ‘sabr’ [patience] according to the dictionary, and in light of these commandments, we find that there are three meanings of ‘sabr’: 1. To abstain from sin and to restrain one’s baser self from it. 2. To remain resolute in carrying out good deeds. 3. To refrain from bewailing and lamenting. These are generally the meanings implied in the Urdu language. Hence, in light of the first meaning, it is the task of an individual to resolutely and constantly combat those evils that attract Man, and to remain prepared to combat future sins that may entice him. Therefore, it does not suffice to merely claim that one is very patient, and to sit, placing one’s hands together, rather, true patience is to continuously cleanse one’s inner self. It is such people whom Allah the Almighty helps, in ways they cannot even imagine. Our opponents desire for us to forsake patience and act in the same manner as them, so that they may succeed in their objectives. However, Allah the Almighty commands us to act with wisdom, to analyse ourselves to see if what we say is in accordance with His commandments, and to thus act accordingly. In light of the second meaning, it can thus be described that a person remains consistent in carrying out good deeds that they are already undertaking, and strives to adopt other virtuous deeds that they are yet to carry out. This is a type of patience as well. This in truth is what will grant a person the nearness of God Almighty, and this nearness can be attained through outward manifestation and with prayers, regarding
14
which Allah Almighty states in the Holy Quran:
َّ َ ۡ َّ ۡ ُ ۡ َ ۡ َ ۡ ٰ ۡ َ َّ ٌ ۡ َ َّ َ الﺼ ٰلو ِة َو ِاﻧ َھا لَﻜ ِﺒ َة ِالا َعلﻰ الﺨ ِﺸ ِع واﺳﺘ ِعﻴنوا ِبالﺼِ و
“And seek help with patience and Prayer; and this indeed is hard except for the humble in spirit.” [2:46]. Only those who fear Allah, are humble and seek the pleasure of Allah are able to display such patience. Then, in another instance, Allah states:
“And those who persevere in seeking the favour of their Lord, and observe Prayer, and spend out of that with which We have provided them, secretly and openly, and repel evil with good. It is these who shall have the best reward of the final Abode.” [Surah ar-Ra‘ad, Ch. 13: V. 23] This abode and this world is temporary. There are trials here, but the final and lasting abode is granted to those who seek the pleasure of Allah the Almighty. Therefore, patience is another word for seeking Allah the Almighty’s pleasure with resolve, humility and prayers. This is only possible when we transform our state and our lives to be in line with Allah the Almighty’s teachings and when our objective becomes to attain the pleasure of Allah. Then, as has already been mentioned, one meaning of patience is to not bewail or lament. In times of trials, illness, financial loss, or any other trouble, one must not become anxious, or wail out of despair, saying, “What has Allah done.” These are signs of impatience. To hold grievances against Allah is completely wrong. One must always have the mindset that whatever one possesses is due to the blessings of Allah the Almighty. One day Allah takes something away; another day He gives something instead. Those who think in this way are true believers, and it is these who, in the estimation of Allah, are deemed those who demonstrate true patience. These are the three meanings of patience. However, it should always be remembered that patience should not be the result of weakness or any sort of worldly fear. Rather,
Friday 26 May 2023 | AL HAKAM
only when it is solely for the sake of attaining the pleasure of Allah the Almighty can it be considered true patience, which draws the blessings of Allah the Almighty. If, in the face of cruelty inflicted by an official or a king, one remains silent only because Allah the Almighty has commanded patience, then this can be regarded as true patience. However, if one does so for fear of their own life, then this would be considered wrong. We enjoin patience only because it has been commanded by Allah the Almighty. Otherwise, if it were the case of retaliation alone, then there are many Ahmadis who anxiously wait for an opportunity to give these oppressors a taste of revenge without any fear for their own lives. However, we will never do such a thing, because it would contradict the teachings we have been given and we despise such actions because they do not behove the communities of prophets. In our pledge of allegiance, we have vowed to protect humanity against every type of evil. The Promised Messiahas has strictly forbidden us from such actions. With reference to patience, Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra has also elucidated that one’s actions should demonstrate a clear distinction between patience and having no honour or shame. For example, if one is in need and goes to another in order to ask for some money, and the person he goes to responds by chastising him, calling him indecent and shameless and humiliates him, yet the person who went to him simply laughs and avoids addressing the matter with the thought that he is in need and so he should simply bear these insults, then this constitutes a lack of honour and dignity. However, there are times when patience must be shown for the sake of the nation and for the faith and this requires one to stay silent. Such patience has nothing to do with one’s personal affairs. Hence, this can be regarded as true patience, not a lack of dignity. For example, if there is a situation where retaliation would cause difficulty to the nation, yet one still launches an attack rather than exhibiting patience, then such a person would be considered foolish because their actions caused harm to the entire nation. Therefore, when one refrains from retaliating for the sake of their nation’s betterment or to protect the world from harm, then this can truly be regarded as
patience. We should always keep this point in mind. Some people become very passionate when someone is arrested by the police and say that there should be some sort of demonstration or riot; all such things are wrong. The enemy desires this sort of reaction so that they have an excuse to cause even more difficulties. They would meet with those officials who are already against us and urge them to seize Ahmadis and impose even more restrictions on their organisation. Or they would go to the government, where some, in fact, most officials are also against us. In fact, some government officials even secretly protect and support them. It is on such occasions that the hypocrites also seek to benefit. When such reactions were shown in similar circumstances, then we saw that the situation worsened. This is exactly what will happen because, as we have experienced, when this sort of reaction is shown, the circumstances only become more dire. There are certain instances in our Community’s history in which there was greater harm than benefit [as a result of retaliating]. When patience was shown and the legal route was taken in an attempt to better the situation, then even if not one hundred per cent of the time, but most of the time it proved beneficial. In any case, we convey the message that we also belong to this nation and of course, we are also susceptible to showing a less-thanideal response, or such a reaction could be shown by an individual; however, we never do, because this is against the Islamic teachings. [This approach] gradually has a positive impact on some officials and we have experienced this to be the case. If we start responding to vulgarity with vulgarity or brutality with brutality, then we will be leaving a negative impression instead of a positive one upon those to whom we are preaching. In that case, they would be justified in questioning what positive change came about in these [Ahmadi] people after the advent of the Promised Messiahas which would encourage them to join the Community; [they would say] their actions are similar to those of their opponents. It has been the practice of prophets and their communities to tread with patience and prayer, just as Allah the Almighty and the Holy Prophetsa commanded, and the
Promised Messiahas taught. Therefore, we should always remember that we must endure temporary and minor difficulties with patience for the greater benefit of the Community. In fact, on one occasion, Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra even said that at times we do not need to knock at the door of the law; we should simply bear difficulties with patience. Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra cited the Promised Messiahas who said that some may assert that he used strong language in some of his books and thus this gives us the liberty to do the same. Such people should remember that Allah the Almighty and His Messengers have a distinct stature. In the worldly sense, we see that a magistrate or a judge can determine that someone is a thief because this is their duty and their right, based on which they can determine a punishment in an attempt to reform the perpetrator. However, not everyone has the right to label others as thieves or guilty of a crime. If they were to do so, it would create disorder. Hence, if the Promised Messiahas showed people their weaknesses and brought them to light, he did so for their reformation and to save people from their false notions. As for his own person, the Promised Messiahas states: د ں ان ں ں د ر ش اور “Upon hearing their curses, I pray for them. Mercy rises forth, for we have suppressed our anger”. This is the very teaching that the Promised Messiahas imparted to us: that we must endure the difficulties inflicted by others with patience. Hazrat Muslehe-Maudra gave the example of an incident from the life of the Promised Messiahas. On one occasion, the Promised Messiahas was travelling to Lahore in a carriage, when some troublemakers in the city began pelting him with stones that would strike his carriage – it was a horse-drawn carriage that was enclosed. However, the Promised Messiah’sas facial expression did not even change in the slightest owing to their actions, despite the fact that some stones caused the window to break and would land inside. This patience exhibited by the Promised Messiahas was the very thing that influences scores of these people to enter into his servitude and accept him. These are the same moral qualities that we must exhibit today. If someone is unjust due to personal gain, and on account of harbouring malice and enmity, then Allah the Almighty Himself will take them to task, on the condition that our patience is accompanied by prayer. During the time of the Holy Prophetsa, there were many who accepted Islam upon seeing the patience of the Holy Prophetsa or his Companions. We find such examples in this era as well, as Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra states that during the time of the Promised Messiahas, people joined this Community after seeing the patience of the Promised Messiahas. (Khutbat-e-Mahmud, Vol. 9, pp. 130-140) We witness this even today, and many write letters to me from various countries about those who enter the fold of this Community upon learning about this history. On one occasion, whilst urging the Community to show patience, the Promised Messiahas said: “Patience is a great excellence. One who demonstrates patience and does not
AL HAKAM | Friday 26 May 2023 retaliation for their slander, they themselves feel shame and embarrassment.” Indeed, in this day and age, there are many who are shameless and persist in their cruelty, but there are also those who feel ashamed. They feel regret and remorse for their actions. In my previous sermons, while mentioning some incidents from Bangladesh, I gave the example of a boy among the rioters who was confronted by a boy from our Community. He asked the rioter, “Do you know the reason behind what you are doing?” The rioter then realised [what was happening] and dropped the stone or brick that he had in his hand. The Promised Messiahas states: “I say to you truthfully never to discard patience. Patience is a weapon that can achieve things that a canon cannot. Only patience can conquer hearts. Surely, you must bear in mind that it pains me greatly when I come to know that, despite being a part of this community, a member has quarrelled with another. I am severely opposed to such behaviour, and God Almighty does not desire that the Community destined to be an example for the world adopts a path other than that of righteousness. In fact, I shall also inform you that Allah the Almighty has emphasised this matter to such a degree that, having entered this Community, if an individual does not act with patience and tolerance, then he is not part of this Community.” This is a serious warning that we should all be mindful of. The Promised Messiahas continues: “One reason why you become enraged is that people hurl foul abuse at me”. (The Promised Messiahas says that people use vile language against him and as a result, [Ahmadis] become enraged.) Instead, resign this matter to God. You cannot pass judgement on this. Leave my matter to God. Observe patience and tolerance upon hearing their slander. You are not aware of the extent to which I endure their slander. I often receive letters filled with vile abuse, and sometimes I receive this abuse through postcards as well. Those letters are unpaid and I have to pay for their postage. (The letters are sent with postage unpaid. They were sent without a stamp, which would have to be paid for. After opening the letters, he would find nothing but vile abuse.) Their slander was so abominable that I am certain no prophet had to endure such insults. I do not even consider Abu Jahl to be capable of such language. (Even Abu Jahl did not resort to this degree of slander.) However, one must endure this. If I observe patience, it is your obligation to also observe patience. A branch is not superior to the tree itself.” The Promised Messiahas demonstrated the pinnacle of patience. It is, as Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra also stated, that in his own defence, the Promised Messiahas demonstrated absolute patience. If, according to the claims of people, the Promised Messiahas was harsh in his approach, then it was for the purpose of reformation. This was a right granted to him by Allah the Almighty. Not everyone is granted this right. Thus, if we have not been given this right, then by adopting harsh measures, instead of bringing about reform, the chances of us spreading disorder increase. The Promised Messiahas further states:
“How long will they continue to hurl vile abuse at me? Eventually, they will tire, yet their slandering and mischief will never cause me fatigue. Thus, we too shall never tire. If I had not been sent by God Almighty, I would have undoubtedly been fearful of their slander. However, I know with certainty that God has appointed me. Why then should I be concerned about such meaningless words? This cannot be! Deliberate over this: who has their slander damaged more; me or themselves? Their community has withered, while mine has grown. Our community is growing from the numbers [joining us from] their ranks. If such slandering could become a hindrance, how has the membership of this Community exceeded 200,000?” When the Promised Messiahas made this statement, he mentioned that the Community comprised 200,000 members. Today, by the grace of Allah the Almighty, his message and community have reached every country of the world. Did this all happen due to any protest or demonstration of power? Not at all, in fact, this is the result of sacrifices, patience and prayers. Thus, in order to attain this grand objective, we need to continue demonstrating patience. The Promised Messiahas further states: “Have these people come from among them or from somewhere else? They issued edicts of kufr [disbelief] against me, but what was the ultimate impact of those edicts? The Community continued to grow. If this Community was established through ploys and deceit, then such edicts indeed would have had an impact and this edict of disbelief would have caused a huge impediment in my path. However, no mortal being possesses the power to destroy that which is from Allah the Almighty. All of the ploys hatched against me by the opponents have only left those, who can truly see the reality, in envy of me. “I emphatically state that those who oppose me are as if they are placing their hands against a great river that surges forth with all its power and by doing so they desire to stop it, (i.e., the water is flowing in the form of a river and by placing their hand inside it they desire to stop the flow of water). However, it is plainly obvious that it cannot be stopped. They desire to stop this through their verbal abuse, but let it be known that this shall never be stopped. Does it behove an honourable person to utter profanities? I express my regret at these Muslims, [wondering] what kind of Muslims they are, who brazenly utter foul language. (For example, they utter all kinds of verbal abuse in their religious gatherings in Pakistan.) I swear by Allah the Almighty, I have never even heard such vulgar profanities being uttered by the lowliest of people as those uttered by these Muslims. In fact, their foul language reflects their true condition. (By uttering obscene language, they are only reflecting their own inner condition in terms of their thinking and conduct.) They acknowledge that they are unrighteous and disbelievers. May God Almighty open their eyes and have mercy upon them, (Ameen).” The Promised Messiahas further states: “If those who utter such verbal abuse are in their millions, even then they cannot do any harm to God Almighty. They are aware that by doing so they will only incur the cost of a [postal] card, but they fail to realise
that along with the loss of this money, they also blemish their record of deeds. (By writing such profanities, they tarnish their record of deeds as well.) Moreover, I do not understand why they even hurl such verbal abuse. Is it simply for the reason that I say that one should not abandon the Holy Quran; one should not dishonour the Holy Prophetsa? I am utterly amazed that, despite the fact that it is written in the Holy Quran that Jesusas has passed away and he shall not return to the earth, they do not wish to accept this and remain bent upon a concept that is contrary to the Holy Quran. If I had not appeared and if God Almighty had not established this community, then they could’ve said whatever they willed, because there was no one from among them to revive them and warn them. However, now that God Almighty has commissioned me and I have been declared the Hakam [judge] by the Holy Prophetsa, they have no right to criticise me upon my declaration. Righteousness would have necessitated that they listen to me, ponder over it and not hasten to reject me. I truthfully say that upon my advent they had no right to speak against me, for I have come from God Almighty and have appeared as the Hakam [Judge].” (Malfuzat [1984], Vol. 7, pp. 203206) The great level of patience demonstrated by the Holy Prophetsa in accordance with the commandment of Allah the Almighty is matchless. Whilst mentioning this, the Promised Messiahas states: “The people of Mosesas, the Israelites, accepted him immediately; therefore, he did not have to face any sorrow, hardship or challenge from his own people. (Mosesas did not face any hardship from his own people, rather it was from the Pharaoh.) On the other hand, the Holy Prophetsa faced hardships and rejection from his own people. In light of these circumstances, how extraordinary was the success of the Holy Prophetsa which is the greatest testimony to his excellences and qualities. In accordance with the will and command of Allah the Almighty, when the Holy Prophetsa started to preach his message, the very first challenge he faced was the rejection of his own people. It is written that the Holy Prophetsa invited the Quraish for a meal and then asked them to answer his question: would they believe him if he told them there was a huge army behind the mountain that was waiting for an opportunity to launch an attack against them. All of them unanimously exclaimed that indeed, they would believe it to be true because they always found him to be truthful and trustworthy. When they had made this affirmation, the Holy Prophetsa

speak out in anger does not speak of his own accord; rather, God Almighty speaks through him. The Community ought to show patience and not respond to the enemy’s cruelty with cruelty or slander with slander. Those who reject me are not obliged to speak courteously. (They are not obliged to say the name of the Promised Messiahas respectfully.) Many examples of this can be found in the life of the Holy Prophetsa. There is nothing like patience, yet demonstrating it is an arduous task. Allah the Almighty assists the one who demonstrates patience.” (Malfuzat [1984], Vol. 8, p. 200) Furthermore, describing the circumstances facing the community and mentioning the difficulties of new converts while also advising them to remain patient, the Promised Messiahas states: “My Community will face the same hardships faced by Muslims at the time of the Holy Prophetsa. The first difficulty that presents itself is that when a person enters this Community, their friends and family immediately sever ties with them. Sometimes this is true to the degree that even parents and siblings become enemies; they refrain from saying ‘Peace be on you’ and even refuse to attend their funerals. We have experienced many such hardships.” The Promised Messiahas continues: “I am aware that there are some men of weak temperaments who become troubled by such hardships. However, bear in mind that experiencing such hardships is necessary. You are not above the prophets and messengers, all of whom also endured these hardships. Hardships come to strengthen one’s faith in God Almighty (difficulties arise to bolster one’s faith), to bring about a purifying transformation and to keep one engaged in prayer. Thus, it is necessary for you to follow in the footsteps of the prophets and messengers and demonstrate patience. You will not incur any sort of loss. A friend who abandons you on account of your accepting the truth is not a true friend. If they were true friends, they would stay by your side. Instead of quarrelling and conflicting with those who abandon you because you chose to become a part of the Community established by God Almighty Himself, you ought to pray for them in seclusion.” One must not only abstain from quarrelling with them, one should also pray that Allah the Almighty grants these people the same insight and understanding He granted you through His grace. The Promised Messiahas did not simply forbid conflict and disorder, but also enjoined prayer. He instructed us to be compassionate so that others could also recognise the truth. The Promised Messiahas further states: “Your pious example and excellent conduct should prove that you have adopted the right path. I have been commissioned to remind you again and again to avoid all places of disorder and corruption and to adopt patience after being slandered. Respond to evil with goodness, and if anyone resorts to creating disorder, remove yourself from them. (It has been ordained by the Holy Quran to leave such an area and respond with tenderness.) Often, it is observed that a person becomes overzealous in their enmity and adopts a stance that is malicious, i.e., their opposition can cause disorder, thereby provoking bystanders. However, when such people receive kindness in return and no

stated, ‘I truly tell you that I am a Messenger of God Almighty and I warn you of an impending punishment.’ As soon as he had said this, everyone became infuriated and an evil one among them said:
َ ًّ َ َ َلﻚ َﺳاﰱِﺮ الﻴو ِم ﺗﺒا
(In other words, he expressed [his desire] for the Holy Prophetsa to be destroyed, God-forbid.) What a pity that the very teaching that was a means of their salvation and prosperity, these people who were unheedful of the afterlife, expressed their dislike towards it and began to oppose it. Now, reflect upon the people of Mosesas in comparison. Despite being hard-hearted, the Israelites immediately accepted the invitation from Mosesas. However, [in the case of the Holy Prophetsa], a prophet who was even greater than Mosesas, his people did not accept him.” The Promised Messiahas was giving an example here of the people of Mosesas and stated: “The people of Mosesas accepted him, but the prophet, who was greater than Mosesas, his people did not accept him. They stood up against the Holy Prophetsa and began their opposition. They would continuously conspire to kill him. This era [of opposition] was so long that it continued for 13 years. 13 years is not a short period of time. The sorrow and hardship experienced by the Holy Prophetsa during this time was so great that it is not an easy task to even describe it. They would not leave any stone unturned in their efforts to cause pain and torment and yet Allah the Almighty would continue to command them to demonstrate patience and steadfastness. (On the one hand, they were experiencing hardships and yet Allah the Almighty was commanding them to show patience and steadfastness.) This is the true meaning of patience and they were continuously commanded to demonstrate it just as the earlier prophets demonstrated patience. The Holy Prophetsa demonstrated an excellent standard of patience in the face of these hardships and continued to actively preach; in fact, he would always continue to make progress. The fact is that the patience demonstrated by the Holy Prophetsa was
not like that of the earlier prophets. This is because [the earlier prophets] were sent for a particular people and so the hardships and torments they faced were limited to [those, received from] those people alone. In contrast to this, the Holy Prophet’ssa level of patience was far greater. This is because not only did his own people oppose him and cause afflictions, but even Christians became his enemies. When they were told that Jesusas was a servant of God and His messenger, they became infuriated as they deemed him to be god. However, the Holy Prophetsa came and revealed the truth. It is a matter of principle that one who adopts something as their god and worships it, it is not easy to abandon their belief, rather it is very difficult. This doctrine of the Christians had become firmly rooted in them, therefore, when they heard that the Holy Prophetsa had turned their imaginary god into a human, they became his bitter enemies. (On the one hand, his own people, who were idolaters and who rejected him became his enemy, and on the other hand, the Christians also opposed him.) Furthermore, idolatrous practices had taken root amongst the Jews. (Then there is mention with reference to the Jews.) Idolatrous customs had taken root amongst the Jews and they completely rejected the Messiah. They were not prepared to accept Jesusas. When the Jews were warned, they too rose up in opposition. Thus, Jews, Christians, idolaters and those of other faiths all turned against him. This is because the Jews considered Jesusas to be an imposter and a liar – God forbid. The Holy Prophetsa told them that they themselves were liars in their accusation of falsehood. Jesusas was a pious prophet of Allah the Almighty. Aside from this, one main reason for their enmity was that, in their ignorance and foolishness, they thought that the Seal of the Prophets was to be an Israelite, considering it to be Allah’s practice in accordance with the Torah. They misinterpreted the words of the prophecy about the final prophet, because the wording used was ‘from among thy brethren’. They considered this to mean that he would be from among the children of Israel, whereas the prophecy referred to the children of Ismaelas. Hence, when they heard the claim of the Holy Prophetsa in that he is the Seal of the Prophets, all their hopes were vanquished and everything they had envisaged about the prophecy in the Torah was declared to be false. Owing to this, they burned with rage and they rose up in opposition.” (Malfuzat [1984], Vol. 7, pp. 198-200) An Ahmadi from a village came to see the Promised Messiahas and mentioned the opposition he faced from a cleric in his village. He requested prayers, saying, “There is a cleric in my village who works in the Madrasa [school] and is a staunch opponent. He causes me a lot of pain. Your Holiness, please pray that Allah the Almighty may cause him to be transferred from there.” Upon hearing this, the Promised Messiahas smiled and then explained to him by saying: “If you have joined this Community, then learn to follow its teachings. If one does not suffer pain, then why would one be deserving of reward? The Messengersa of Allah suffered for thirteen
years in Mecca. You do not have any idea of the pain and suffering of that era, nor have you experienced anything similar. Despite this, the Holy Prophetsa advised his companions to show patience. Eventually, every enemy was annihilated. That era is near, when you will no longer see these evil people. Allah the Almighty has ordained for this Community to spread throughout the world. At present, they see you as fewer in number and cause you harm, but when this Community will be in the majority, they themselves will be silenced. If God Almighty so wished, they would not cause you harm, nor would He create those people who cause you harm. However, through them, God Almighty wishes to teach you patience. After showing patience for a short time, you will see that in reality, that matter is not as serious as you envisage; all those who cause you harm will either repent, or be annihilated. I receive many letters wherein people say they used to utter profanities and deemed it to be a source of reward. However, they now repent and pledge allegiance. Patience is a form of worship.” The Promised Messiahas continues: “Patience is a form of worship. God Almighty states that the one who demonstrates patience will receive a limitless reward, (i.e., they will be showered with uncountable blessings). This reward is reserved only for those who are patient. Allah the Almighty has not promised this concerning other forms of worship. When a person spends their entire lifetime in the protection of another, and upon seeing them endure pain, time after time, eventually the honour of the one who gave the protection becomes inflamed and he destroys the one who was causing the other harm. In the same way, our Community is under the protection of God Almighty. Furthermore, one’s faith becomes strengthened after experiencing pain. There is nothing like patience.” (Malfuzat [1984], Vol. 4, pp. 234-235) Similarly, some people came to Qadian to pledge allegiance. Whilst advising them, the Promised Messiahas said: “Worldly people depend heavily upon resources; however, Allah the Almighty is not in need of any resources. If He so desires, He can ensure that the work of His loved ones is completed without resorting to any resource, and at times, He helps them by creating the necessary means and at times He can destroy already established means. In short, purify your deeds, continuously remember God Almighty and do not become unmindful. Just as prey becomes trapped by the predator the moment it shows any indolence, in the same manner, those who become unmindful of the remembrance of God fall prey to Satan. Keep alive the practice of repenting and do not let this practice fade away. Never live a moment without repentance, always keep repentance in mind, for only that limb remains healthy that remains in use and the limb that is left unused becomes permanently damaged and worthless. In the same way, ensure that you continue to offer repentance, lest that [habit] becomes worthless. If one does not repent earnestly, then it is akin to a seed that is planted on stones. If a person offers true repentance, it is like the seed that is
planted on exceptionally fertile land, which bears fruit at its appointed time. These days, there are many difficulties in offering such repentance.” The Promised Messiahas told the new converts: “Now, once you depart from here, you will have to put up with a lot of things, people will make up all kinds of stories saying that you pledged allegiance to a leper, disbeliever and a great deceiver, etc. They will hurl profanities (at the Promised Messiahas). Do not become incensed by those who do this. Do not become enraged by such people. I have been appointed by Allah the Almighty to teach patience.” Thus, we should always remember these points. The Promised Messiahas has stated that they must pray to God Almighty to guide them [i.e., the enemies]. The Promised Messiahas has been commissioned to teach us patience. Therefore, our success lies in our following in his footsteps. The Promised Messiahas further says: “The weapons that will lead us to victory are: istighfar [seeking forgiveness], taubah [repentance], (and not to react in the same manner as the opponents). The weapons that will lead us to victory are not that we react in kind, rather, the weapons that will grant us victory are istighfar [seeking forgiveness], taubah [repentance], increasing in religious knowledge, understanding the grandeur of God Almighty and offering the five daily prayers. Worship is the key to the acceptance of prayer. When you observe prayer, ensure that you offer supplications and do not show negligence in this matter. Abstain wholly from every vice, regardless of whether it pertains to fulfilling the rights of God or fulfilling the rights of His creation. Thus, abstain from every form of vice.” (Malfuzat [1984], Vol. 5, p. 303) Thus, these pieces of advice are the foundations of our success and progress. If, in accordance with the guidance of the Promised Messiahas, we continue to pay heed to istighfar, repentance, the acquisition of religious knowledge and offering the five daily prayers, we will find success. No matter how much the enemy transgresses in spreading chaos and disorder, we too must exceed in bowing before Allah the Almighty. This is the secret to our success. The Promised Messiahas has repeatedly advised us to do this as opposed to any sort of retaliation. Nevertheless, our victory is destined, as the Promised Messiahas has stated, God-willing. Indeed, it should be borne in mind that we must continue our efforts with wisdom. Much of our work can be completed with wisdom. It is for this reason that demonstrating wisdom is necessary. If every Ahmadi understands this responsibility, many problems will be solved through our conduct and prayers. May Allah the Almighty enable us to be patient and to offer supplications. Furthermore, may He enable us to act upon this guidance in order to attain His pleasure. (Official Urdu transcript published in the Daily Al Fazl International, 19 May 2023, pp. 2-7.
