INSIDER ACCESS TO OUR FAVORITE HOT SPOTS, LOCAL CULTURE, AND UPCOMING EVENTS BY CIELO VIDA
Adventures, beauty, and local friendships are what Jed and Kennley Selby love most about the Upper Arkansas Valley. In 2018 the husband-wife duo opened the Wesley & Rose Lobby Bar (flowing from inside the lobby of the Surf Hotel at 1012 Front Loop in Buena Vista ) to provide a public
living room for locals and travelers alike. The Wesley & Rose staff foster a “great vibe and a grateful spirit.” The Selby’s favorite meal is brunch, and their menu reflects it—try one of their Benedicts with house-made English muffins or Surf Toast French Toast with a house-made baguette. For dinner try the vegetarian
lasagna with grass-fed meatballs on the side. Specials include a nightly small-ranch butcher’s cut and catch of the day. GF and vegan options. Casual elegant attire—board shorts welcome. Open nightly 4-10 p.m. Sunday brunch 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Order online SurfHotel.com

Bryan Joslin describes a mountain phoenix as someone who’s found themselves reborn in the beauty of the mountains and lives a life of passionate fire. His aptly named business, Mountain Phoenix Coffee at 216 W. Rainbow Blvd., reflects that vision. Bryan aims to fuel your fire during “the most important moment of the day—your morning cup of coffee.” Celebrating 20 years in 2023, Mountain Phoenix has never advertised (Bryan devotes
his energy to experiencing the magic of nature) and yet sells an average of 200 pounds of coffee per week. He roasts fair-trade and organic beans wherever possible—customer favorites are the Mexican Roast, Sumatra, Dark Side of The Roast, and Firestarter. He also offers housemade spiced chai and epic grab-andgo breakfast burritos. “The love and trust [with our customers] has been built for almost two decades.” Open seven days a week, 7 a.m.-2 p.m.
Michael Clark was 10 years old when he “got hooked on painting.” An artist visited his grade school in Traverse City, MI. He remembers, “Watching a blank canvas turn into something that looked real was amazing.” Michael’s been painting ever since, and his love for the outdoors is the most substantial influence in his work as he aims to capture the world around him. He moved to Denver in 2011 and spent several years visiting Salida before relocating in
ART2018 to set up an exclusive studio showcasing his oil paintings. Michael decided it was the perfect town to open an art gallery and cherishes the people and community of Salida who make it “the best town in Colorado.” He invites visitors to stop in The Michael Clark Gallery at 108 F Street to watch him paint. Check for Michael’s community events online, including live painting with Santa each December. Open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Thurs.-Mon. or by appointment.

Nate and Diana Porter knew they wanted to invest in a commercial building while putting down roots to raise their daughter in the Upper Arkansas Valley—both goals became catalysts for opening Salida Mountain Sports at 110 F Street in 2007. Not your typical cookie-cutter outdoor gear shop, SMS has a unique product selection and a staff made up of locals who possess an in-depth knowledge of the region. “We
also try to keep Salida's small town, funky vibe, even as the area grows. People who live here are lucky to enjoy easy access to all kinds of outdoor activities.”
For a favorite local backcountry ski line recommendation, Nate suggests Mount Aetna, during a stable late winter or early spring snowpack, “That’s hard to beat.” SMS also hosts outdoor-related events from time to time. Visit SalidaMountainSports.com
If you love getting out deep into the snowy woods, Monarch Snowmobile Tours will take you there. Veteran-owned by ex-military helicopter pilot Steven Elliott, he and his guides lead guests into the powdery backcountry on four areas of private land and acres and acres of permitted National Forest trails. “We’re not on open roads, we’re on trails groomed just for snowmobiles. We press into the trees.” Steven has lived all over the world and chose Salida due to the small-town feel. “There
are three traffic lights and there’s no waiting in line. As soon as I got here, I said, ‘I’m not leaving.’” Steven’s familyfriendly winter touring operation is the most affordable in the state because he wants everyone to be able to experience snowmobiling. “We make sure your vacation is everything you hoped it would be.” Open, snow permitting, Nov.1-mid April at 22763 US 50. Save money when you book by calling (719) 539-2572.

What I found was home, and I’m passionate about helping you do the same. I believe in representation and education. I leverage my local knowledge and experience to provide first-rate representation, and use a combination of historical data, current insights and market trends to help clients take educated steps towards realizing their real estate goals.

The mountains are calling and I must go! So, that is what my husband and I did over 10 years ago after discovering Salida during a ski trip. Moving from Oklahoma City, we purchased Roxy’s Bottle Shop and jumped feet first into the community. I have served on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and FIBArk Board of Directors. Before moving to Salida, I spent 10 years as a top-selling Realtor in the Oklahoma City area and love continuing my real estate career with Pinon.

I am the founding partner and co-owner of Pinon Real Estate Group. Born in Montana and growing up in the small town of Black Forest, Colorado, I moved to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area in my twenties to start a business and family. After twenty years of Texas traffic and heat, I longed to return to Colorado. Salida provided the ideal combination of climate, scenery, recreation, and small town values for my wife and I to raise our four children. I love fly fishing, enjoying outdoor time with my family, and driving vintage Porsche sports cars.

I’ve been with Pinon almost since the very beginning. 2006 was very busy for me; I moved, got married, and started my new job here as Office Manager. In 2013 I decided to get my Real Estate License. When the opportunity to take on the role of General Manager arose, I readily accepted. Born and raised in the Meeker area, I fell in love with Salida during multiple visits and after meeting my husband Shawn, a thirdgeneration native. I feel a deep connection to the values of hard work, honesty, and integrity that underpin everything we do here at Pinon.

I’m all about making things happen, so to say I don’t waste time is an understatement. Salida has been my home since 2000, and I actually spent most of my summers here while growing up. I was born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder. I am both a Broker Associate and the long-term Property Manager for Pinon. A typical day? I return dozens of phone calls, show rental homes, and coordinate repairs. I shoot out hundreds of emails each week, soothe nerves, distribute information, hold hands and listen.

Together with Kym, I raise my two daughters, enjoy fly fishing, mountain biking, snowboarding, and the sense of community that comes with living in a small town. I am a board member and past board chair of Realtors of Central Colorado and the Central Colorado Conservancy.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL ACTIVITIES?

After graduating from college in 1994, I came to Salida for the summer to work for my brother. I intended to eventually return home to the SF Bay Area but I met Hayden and never left! I love the mountains and the community, volunteer with Heart of the Rockies Hospice, and lead the Caring Committee for the Salida Sangha. I am also curator of the Pinon office art gallery and love going on hikes around ‘S’ Mountain. Our daughters have flown their Salida nest now but raising them in this community was one of the best decisions we’ve made.

I grew up in Salida where I developed a love for the outdoors, especially skiing and mountain biking. I’ve watched Salida grow from a sleepy mountain town to a thrill-seekers getaway, and seeing people fall in love with the area for the same reasons I did has made me even more passionate about the community. You may recognize me as the founder and former owner of Albritton Ski Co or helping my lovely wife Ysabella at her shop Fay & Maye. I feel very fortunate to call Salida home and for the opportunity to work with such a great team at Pinon.

I initially came to Arkansas River Valley to camp and raft on the Arkansas River. Now, I’m grateful to see the beautiful mountains and be a member of this amazing community each day! After living in Salida and Buena Vista since the year 2000, I have a wealth of local market knowledge. With 25 years of real estate experience as a broker and loan officer, my goal is to help clients make educated decisions and good choices. If I’m not in the office, you might find me at the golf course, on my yoga mat, or on the river.

I am originally from the foothills of the Appalachian mountains in southeastern Ohio. After summering in Alaska and wintering in different countries around the world for eight years, I decided to return to the mountains to set down some roots. The Rockies, Salida, and the wonderful people who call it home was an easy choice. I co-founded The Seasonals Magazine and host The Seasonals Podcast and love meeting and listening to great storytellers. I’m excited to be a part of the Pinon team.

Raised in Salida, I always enjoyed living in a small town and its sweet, slow-paced charm. And I've always considered Salida home. So after graduating college and living in Denver, I came back for more family time. While looking to relocate, I stumbled upon the Pinon Office Manager position. It's allowed me to explore my organization skills and creative interests and has been a great introduction to real estate. I love spending time with family and friends, plucking my ukulele, playing a game of pickle ball, and embracing the moment with others.
