estern surrealist artist Laura Donavan’s mountain roots began as a child visiting her grandparents’ ranch in the mountains of Colorado from her home state of Florida. But it took a journey from vet school to art school, and residences in Wyoming and Montana before Laura and her husband Bill landed in Salida to conjoin with the local arts scene. Her early artistic career was in digital commercial art, working with an array of popular brands, including Friskies and Sam Adams.

Now her internationally renowned and collected work is expressed primarily in mediums beyond the digital, particularly in creating with hand-dyed paper and acrylic on birch boards. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 24TH CHRISTMAS MOUNTAIN LIGHTING AND PARADE OF LIGHTS A Salida holiday event not to be missed. The Parade of Lights takes place each year on the day after Thanksgiving. Festivities begin with a parade starting at Fifth and F Streets. Continuing along F to end at Riverside Park, known in December as “Holiday Park.” Join the locals and watch Tenderfoot Hill (“S'' Mountain) illuminate with lights and fireworks to become Christmas Mountain. For 17 years the Shavano Academic Booster Club has acknowledged Salida’s students for academic achievement, classroom participation, and good citizenship. Every month, teachers nominate students for recognition in the booster club and parents receive a congratulations letter in the mail when their child is selected. SABC also honors students by displaying their photos in the Mountain Mail newspaper and in local businesses around town and awards each honoree a plaque and gifts at the time of recognition. During the 2022-2023
academic year, the SABC awarded $9,000 in senior college scholarships and teacher grants, which was the highest amount ever awarded. Any student pursuing post-secondary education is eligible to apply, including trade school candidates.
