our years after moving to Salida, Angela and T.W. “Chief” Winston found themselves wishing for an affordable Salida restaurant where they could enjoy live music with their friends. So in August of 2020, they opened one. “When everything shut down the wheels started turning… We decided

it was the perfect time to sink our creative juices together,” Angela reflects. From stellar wings and poké bowls to an easy-breezy kids’ menu and local musicians playing weekly year-round, High Side! Bar & Grill has it all. To create a family atmosphere that locals love, they staffed High Side with a friendly,
“cool crew of teens.” The Winstons love Salida’s “magical quality. It’s one of the best towns in the entire country. It’s going to grow no matter what. We’re just trying to keep it as ‘Salida’ as possible.” 300 W. Sackett Ave. Ever-changing menu. Check out @HighSideSalida on Facebook.

hat happens when a BV High School grad with an MBA, a commercial brewer from Tommyknocker, and a guy with a dozen years of experience working for Senator Hickenlooper’s brewpubs come together? You get a phenomenal batch of biz partners ready to brew up large-scale production and distribution of barrel-aged and Belgian-inspired beers. Carlin
Walsh, Christian Koch, and Andy Astor are three of the creative minds behind Elevation Beer Company. Opened in 2012, Elevation’s become a hub for adventurous locals and tourists passing through the valley. For “replenishment” post-exertion, pick up a six of salt and lime Tres Amigos. hen Steph Brady opened Green Cat Gallery in the mid-90s, most of downtown Salida was boarded up. “[A few friends and I] were the ones who started this whole art movement… perseverance, working together as a team, believing in ourselves, and putting our money in to make [Salida] the art town that it is today.” At the gallery, Steph showcases her art— paintings, glasswork, jewelry—and her husband Joe’s stone sculptures
and wood art. She describes Green Cat as “family,” because her kids and grandchildren helped her keep the gallery open over the years. Speaking of Salida, Steph says, “I love that most of the people who’ve lived here for a while are on mountain time. I love the 4-way stop signs, making people slow down. And last of all, the kindness of people.” Stop by 124 G St., or call (719) 207-0333 to make an appointment. Hours vary. Info at GreenCat-Salida.com.

he Beekeeper’s Honey Boutique is the oldest honey company in Colorado. Owner Jamie Johnston’s great grandfather started the biz back in 1908, making her a fourth-generation heritage beekeeper, and the first female in her family tree to do so—chasing down a childhood dream. In keeping with 114 years of tradition, Jamie’s team still hand labels and bottles every jar of honey since opening in Salida in 2009. Of her love of bees,
Jamie says, “Bees are an integral part of Earth. Please plant bee-friendly flowers and forage any chance you get!” Stop by the boutique at 209 W. 3rd St. to pick up some honey butter and watch beeswax candles being handcrafted with love. During the summer harvest, bring in your own wide-mouth jars to get them filled with raw, unfiltered honey straight from the frame. Open Mon-Sat 10-6 and Sun 11-4. Emily Glovan (719) 239-1015 | rentals@PinonRealEstate.com I joined Pinon Real Estate Group as Stacy Lowe’s Assistant, helping her juggle the day-to-day responsibilities that come with being a long-term property manager. After attending college, meeting my husband, and having a baby, my little family moved from the Fort Collins area, back to the Arkansas Valley to raise our son in the small-town community we have always called home. I am so thrilled to watch our community grow and thrive and I love helping people coming to the area find a rental to get them started and feel at home in the little slice of heaven Salida is!
WHAT IS ONE POSITIVE THING THAT HAPPENED TO YOU THIS YEAR?
MY HUSBAND AND I BOUGHT OUR FIRST HOME!
JoDee Kane (719) 539-0200 | jkane@PinonRealEstate.com I’ve been with Pinon almost since the very beginning. The year 2006 was very busy for me; I moved, got married, and started my new job here as Office Manager. In 2013 I decided to get my Real Estate License. When the opportunity to take on the role of General Manager arose, I readily accepted. Born and raised in the Meeker area, I fell in love with Salida during multiple visits and after meeting my husband Shawn, a thirdgeneration native. I feel a deep connection to the values of hard work, honesty, and integrity that influence everything Pinon does.

(719) 221-0682 | slowe@PinonRealEstate.com I’m all about making things happen, so to say I don’t waste time is an understatement. Salida has been my home since 2000, and I actually spent most of my summers here while growing up. I was born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder. I am both a Broker Associate and the long-term Property Manager for Pinon. A typical day? I return dozens of phone calls, show rental homes, and coordinate repairs. I shoot out hundreds of emails each week, soothe nerves, distribute information, hold hands and listen.
Hayden Mellsop (719) 530-8333 | hmellsop@PinonRealEstate.com Born in New Zealand, I have lived in Salida since 1996, and have worked at Pinon since 2006. Prior to a career in real estate, I guided whitewater rafters and fly anglers in New Zealand and Colorado for over twenty years. Together with Kym, I raise my two daughters, enjoy fly fishing, mountain biking, snowboarding, and the sense of community that comes with living in a small town. I am a board member and past board chair of Realtors of Central Colorado and the Central Colorado Conservancy.

Brett Rankin (719) 221-4239 | brankin@PinonRealEstate.com I grew up in Salida where I developed a love for the outdoors, especially skiing and mountain biking. I’ve watched Salida grow from a sleepy mountain town to a thrill-seekers getaway, and seeing people fall in love with the area for the same reasons I did has made me even more passionate about the community. You may recognize me as the founder and former owner of Albritton Ski Co or helping my lovely wife Ysabella at her shop Fay & Maye. I feel very fortunate to call Salida home and for the opportunity to work with such a great team at Pinon.
Wendy Rombold (719) 221-4662 | wrombold@PinonRealEstate.com Initially I came to this valley to camp and raft on the Arkansas River. Now, everyday I’m grateful to see the beautiful mountains and be a member of this amazing community! After living in the towns of Salida and Buena Vista since the year 2000, I have a wealth of local market knowledge. With 25 years of real estate experience as a broker and loan officer, my goal is to help my clients make educated decisions and good choices. These days if I’m not in the office, you may find me at the golf course, on my yoga mat or on the river.

Since 2004, Salida Mountain Trails’ Trail Stewards have maintained a network of 50-plus miles of trails—ranging from beginner to expert—in Salida’s Arkansas Hills and Methodist Mountain. Their notfor-profit efforts are essential to tourism and improve the quality of life for local residents. SMT’s mission is to “build, maintain and advocate for hiking and biking trails on public land around Salida.” Volunteers are needed to work as trained and certified trail stewards—and families are welcome to serve on open to the public workday “ShinDigs.” Six new connector trails are on the horizon for 2022, review pending. To become a member, business sponsor, or volunteer, email info@salidamountaintrails.org. If you love Salida’s trails, get involved.
Nonprofit Guidestone Colorado supports the health of local food systems and the preservation of agricultural resources via education, community building, and partnerships—providing services to farmers, educators, youth, and community members since 2007. Four key programs include Farm to School, Farmhands Education, Hutchison Homestead & Learning Center, and Colorado Land Link. In 2022, Guidestone staff plans to increase vegetable production at the community and school farm, provide additional educational programming for adults, and reach more community members who would benefit from access to fresh produce, farming, and gardening skills. Guidestone relies on volunteers at events and assistance with planting, weeding, harvesting, heritage tours, and grounds maintenance throughout the year.
