President'sMessage
Dear Pilot Friends,
T
his year’s Pilot International Annual Convention and Leadership Conference will mark our organization’s fourth visit to the Big Easy. We gathered together in New Orleans in 1967, 1977 and 1999, and
now again in 2013. I believe that the unique energy of New Orleans is particularly inspiring for Pilot! Just like Pilot, New Orleans honors its history – keeping fast to its beloved and important traditions - while remaining open and ready to embrace new energy and new ideas. I am delighted to share this inspiring experience with you! This has been a transformative year for Pilot International. I have been privileged to be a part of the team that spearheaded the 2012 Strategic Planning Survey to gather our membership’s input and opinions about Pilot in the 21st Century. The PI Executive Committee used this information to help guide the decisions we made to ensure that Pilot International grows and thrives in its next century of service. I am proud to introduce this plan to you both at this year’s international convention and in this issue of the Pilot Log. I could not be more excited about Pilot’s future and the amazing things to come. As 2012-2013 Pilot International President, I was also particularly blessed to travel – along with my husband Steve – to visit our outstanding Pilot Clubs overseas in Japan, Singapore and Hawaii. I am thrilled to be able to share this once-in-a-lifetime experience with you in this edition of the Log and to introduce you to the truly extraordinary Pilots sharing our vision of Friendship & Service abroad. This year we committed ourselves to strive for and Commit to Excellence! Through your hard work and dedication, Pilot International is ready to provide friendship and service to a new century, answering the call to “Do More, Care More and Be More,” in our clubs and in our communities every day. I am proud of each and every one of you for heeding this call. As Pilots, we not only challenge ourselves to excel in our various projects and in our service to others, but we are called to excel in our efforts to meet the service needs of an ever-changing world. Through your dedication and your commitment, Pilot International is doing just that.
Every Pilot has amazing talents. Every Pilot has amazing strengths. Every Pilot is a shining example of Excellence, and I am honored to serve among you. In Pilot,
Winnie Brewer PI President/PIF BOT Chair

PILOT
As Pilots, we strive to Do More. Care More and Be More every day. No matter whether it was five months or fifty years ago, each Pilot remembers who invited them to their first Club meeting. Each and every Pilot from all walks of life entered that room with different talents, different interests and different experiences, but each remembers the joy and friendship they felt at that first gathering. They remember the exhilaration that came with their first opportunity to serve, and they remember just WHY they joined Pilot. Each member’s unique journey through the months and years that followed are the sparkling threads that knit their personal Pilot tale. Every Pilot has a story. We want to hear yours, and we want to share it. Because your story is part of Pilot’s story. Because YOU are a PILOT. Pilot International invites you to be a part of the I AM A PILOT campaign. New marketing and new membership materials are being designed to introduce the world to Pilot by introducing our amazing members. Pilot is all about its people. Pilot International is honored that you are a part of our organization, and want to share you with the world! Who are you? YOU ARE A PILOT. We want to hear your story, and we want to share it. PILOT INTERNATIONAL CAUSES & CAMPAIGNS
THE ABC’S OF PILOT Based upon your feedback from the 2012 Strategic Planning Survey, at the January 2013 Mid-Year Conference, the Executive Director and Executive Committee identified and formally recognized three core areas of service focus - Pilot’s Fundamental ABC’s - to which Pilot International and its Pilot and Anchor Clubs will be encouraged to invest the majority of their time and philanthropic efforts. In accordance with our mission to serve by furthering Pilot International’s humanitarian efforts through charitable, educational, and research programs in communities throughout the world, the Executive Committee of Pilot International has approved the following:
A
Anchor Clubs
[Youth Development & Leadership]
The Executive Committee of Pilot International has formally approved that Pilot International be fully committed to the promotion and encouragement of Youth Development & Leadership, especially through our Anchor Clubs. Pilot International is committed to providing all the resources and tools necessary to help grow Anchor Clubs into the premier youth service organization in the country. Without a doubt, Today’s Anchors are Tomorrow’s Pilots. Investing our time, our energy and our resources in these bright young people is an investment not only in their future but also in the future of Pilot. By encouraging and supporting our Anchors, we encourage and support the future growth and success of Pilot. By increasing Pilot International’s presence in the Anchor Clubs, Pilot Clubs can also benefit as more Anchor parents are exposed to Pilot’s

mission and service goals. Through the creation of Pilot Parents Clubs (effectively another branch of Pilot Clubs) Pilot’s membership will increase and will begin to bridge the age demographic gap noted in the 2012 Strategic Planning Survey. Pilot International and its Pilot Clubs will promote our Anchor Clubs and Youth Development & Leadership through the following strategies:
New Branding Pilot International’s new branding strategy emphasizes the relationship between Pilot International and Anchor International. By formally unifying the two Pilot “brands,” the two groups strengthen each other.
Foster and Promote Quality Leadership Programming Initiatives Pilot International will create, maintain, support and sustain quality Youth Development & Leadership Programming initiatives to help grow Anchor Clubs into the nation’s premier youth service organization.
SUMMER 2013

Using the Anchors’ own name as a guide, Pilot International is currently designing new curriculum for Anchor Clubs with the strategic goal of encouraging and developing fine citizens and future leaders. This new targeted curriculum coupled with enhanced initiatives like the Anchor Leadership Summit will provide the skills training and tools necessary to ensure that participation in Anchor Clubs will provide today’s youth with quality opportunities to Do More, Care More and Be More in their schools & communities.
National Partnerships to Benefit Anchor Clubs Pilot International is working with several national partners to develop the new curriculum, opportunities and activities for Anchor Clubs to further our goal of developing fine citizens and future leaders with a service-minded heart. • DoSomething.org is the country’s largest not-forprofit for young people and social change. To date, DoSomething.org has helped over 2.4 million young people speak out and act for causes they care about such as bullying, animal cruelty, homelessness, cancer, and other causes dear to the participants’ hearts. DoSomething.org spearheads national campaigns so 13- to 25-year-olds can make an impact. Anchor Clubs have partnered with DoSomething.org to help champion Pilot’s causes while learning how to make a real difference in their communities. Partnership with DoSomething.org will assist our Anchors to Do More. Care More and Be More in a more meaningful way. 1. Partnership with DoSomething.org will also assist our Anchors by offering them opportunities for national exposure, increased opportunities for involvement not only in their own causes and campaigns but also in collaborative efforts with other DoSomething sponsored groups.
2. Anchor’s alliance with DoSomething.org will also afford them opportunities for internships and provide other valuable, real-world experiences to enhance their character and foster their leadership skills. •
Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge Pilot International will continue to encourage the existing partnership between Anchor Clubs and the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. The Freedoms Foundation’s commitment to youth development and leadership training and their dedication to the principles of citizenship and democracy are closely aligned with Pilot’s own vision and goals for our Anchors, and thus Freedoms Foundation will continue to be an honored and valued partner for our Anchor Clubs and their members.
Dreams Ahead Initiative
Pilot International has committed to investing in our Anchors’ future in order to ensure our own. Through the Dreams Ahead Initiative, Pilot Clubs that do not directly sponsor an Anchor Club or do not have Anchors close by will have the opportunity to engage in fundraising activities for Anchors in other areas and other deserving youth. Currently, Pilot International supports several service initiatives such as our outstanding scholarship houses and several other scholarship and scholastic opportunities that will henceforth be classified under the Dreams Ahead initiative. Do More. Care More. Be More. This is the leading principle behind every partnership we will seek and everything we will design for our Anchors. Using their own name as a guide, Pilot’s Youth Development & Leadership initiatives will strive to instill six specific, valuable qualities and characteristics in these young people, enabling them to DO MORE, CARE MORE and BE MORE every day.

Brain Safety & Fitness
Since 1992, Pilot International has worked in the area of brain-related service. Based upon the results of the 2012 Strategic Planning Survey, the Executive Committee of Pilot International has approved that Pilot formally narrow its focus to “Brain Safety & Fitness,” as the majority of our clubs do service work in this area. Results of the 2012 Strategic Planning Survey indicated that membership growth has been hindered by the fact that Pilot International’s dedication to serving “brain-related” initiatives is a very broad category and not easily defined. In response, Pilot International has formally narrowed this cause definition to “Brain Safety & Fitness,” as the survey showed that most local Pilot Clubs were working in these service areas. Redefining our engagement with brain-related initiatives will result in positive club growth and increase our ability to partner with larger national organizations to gain support for our specific initiative(s). By being nationally recognized in conjunction with a more succinct initiative, Pilot International will have more opportunities for national exposure thereby increasing brand

Minders Play Safe Play Smart
BrainMindersTM is Pilot International’s signature award-winning brain-safety educational program for elementary aged students and is an overwhelming favorite initiative of Pilot Clubs worldwide. Through the use of puppets, creative costuming, humor and enthusiasm, Pilots around the world teach children just how and why it is important to keep their brains safe. In order to enhance this program, Pilot International has given BrainMindersTM a fresh new look and is currently developing new scripts, materials and take-away items for attendees. The updated materials (available Fall 2013) will ensure that our star players, Wise Old Owl and his Fuzzy, Funny, Smart and Sunny BrainMinder BuddiesTM will continue to teach young children about injury prevention and how to “Play Safe, Play Smart” for years to come.
In accordance with our commitment to Youth Development & Leadership, Pilot International is introducing two new campaigns into the BrainMindersTM family of brainsafety initiatives.
Support materials for both Be Mindful and What Were You Thinking? will be available to Pilot and Anchor Clubs Fall 2013. •

Support for TBI Camps Many Pilot Clubs around the country currently support and sustain several exemplary camps for individuals with traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Pilot International is proud of the amazing work being done by our local clubs to improve the quality of life for these individuals and their families, and PI wishes to champion their efforts and promote their service at the International level. The Brain Injury Association of America Pilot Clubs supporting TBI Camps work closely with The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA). The mission of the BIAA is to advance brain injury prevention, research, treatment and education and to improve the quality of life for all people affected by brain injury. Participation in Safety Fairs & Bike Rodeos Pilot Clubs are proud participants in their community’s local safety fairs and often host bike rodeos where club members have the opportunity to present BrainMindersTM and discuss the importance of brain safety with participating children. Pilot Clubs then present each attendee with a new bike helmet, often purchased with matching grant funds from the Pilot International Founders Fund. These grass-roots, local safety-related initiatives are at the heart of Pilot International’s service mission, and these efforts will continue to be championed by Pilot International and local clubs worldwide.

aging, new research indicates a strong positive correlation between increased physical activity and increased gray matter volume in the areas of the human brain that are crucial for cognitive function. New research also shows that taking measures to find a purpose and remain involved and actively engaged in society – such as participating in clubs and performing community service – also has a strong positive impact on prolonged brain longevity. Through its “Think H.A.P.P.Y. Be H.A.P.P.Y! They often occur in predictable ways and can be completely avoided with the right education, awareness and planning.” Clearly, Pilot International and Safe Kids Worldwide share a common mission, to educate children about safety, promote awareness about injury prevention and provide support for those who have suffered from traumatic injury or loss due to the same. As a national partner with Safe Kids Worldwide, Pilot International and its local Pilot Clubs will participate in Safe Kids Worldwide’s national Safe Kids Day to promote preventable childhood injury safety awareness. Clubs are encouraged to participate in Safe Kids Day in various ways depending upon their size and location. *Please note that choosing one brain-health related service initiative at the International level does not preclude Pilot Clubs and Districts from participating in or sponsoring their own local projects. However, in addition to their own chosen initiatives, Clubs and Districts are expected to participate in local events supporting the chosen International initiatives when possible.

Pick Me Ups - Kind Acts for Those Who Care
MeU s
Kind Acts For Those Who Care Created by Pilot and Anchor International for family caregivers worldwide
65.7 million Americans – young and old - devote their time and resources to caring for loved ones at home. Just as they struggle to tend to the daily needs of an ailing parent or grandparent, a chronically ill spouse, younger siblings or a child with special needs, the daily needs of the Family Caregiver often go unmet. Their time is no longer their own; their future plans are put on hold. Some are forced to quit their jobs or school, and their homes – once a place of respite and relaxation – can sometimes feel more like a hospital. The burdens of caring for a loved one at home have been associated with increased levels of depression and anxiety, poorer self-reported physical health, compromised immune function, and increased mortality. Caring for the intensive medical needs of another oftentimes leave the Family Caregiver feeling isolated and overwhelmed, and according to USA Today, “78% of caregivers want more help or info about caregiving topics, but don’t know where to turn.” At some point, everyone’s life will be touched by a Family Caregiver; many will become Family Caregivers. It is time now that we begin to recognize their dedication and encourage their efforts. Caregiving knows no age, and by taking up this timely cause and embracing our own innate call to care - Pilots and Anchors can have a positive impact on both adult and youth Family Caregivers alike. Together, Pilot and Anchor International are over 700 clubs and almost 18,000 strong. As such, Pilot International stands poised to positively impact the lives of countless Family Caregivers around the globe and promote awareness for the demands and challenges they face each day. This cause touches everyone the world over. Creating and championing new initiatives to support Family Caregivers will bring awareness both to their plight and to Pilot and help spur membership growth.

Undoubtedly, Pilot International does amazing work raising money and awareness for other brain-health related organizations and initiatives, but as a unique organization unto itself, Pilot International has not embraced an original focus of our own. As a service organization striving to grow and thrive in the 21st Century, Pilot International must not only continue our existing good work for Youth Development & Leadership and Brain Health & Safety but also find our own niche. The “Pick Me Ups” Community Service Initiative fills that niche and will provide Pilots with a sense of pride and ownership akin to Pilot’s first original endeavor, BrainMindersTM. The “Pick Me Ups” Community Initiative will provide support and encouragement for Caregivers of all kinds by providing them with an opportunity for respite, a time for retreat and reprieve from the difficulties of their daily routines. Through “Pick Me Ups,” Pilot Clubs will work directly with local agencies to identify deserving Caregiver candidates. Local Pilot Clubs will then grant the specific “Pick Me Up” experience chosen by the recipient. “Pick Me Ups” experiences can be as different as the caregivers themselves. One person might request help with yard work for a summer, another might want a nice dinner out, or a day of indulgence with a haircut and manicure. The “Pick Me Ups” initiative exists to give Family Caregivers a little something back, a little “Pick Me Up” meant simply to brighten their day, and to remind them that somewhere, someone cares – for them. The “Pick Me Ups” program will also be a new resource for family caregivers. In addition to the “Pick Me Up” experience or gift itself, Pilot International will send information to caregivers on a variety of nationally available resources. At its core, Pilot International is an organization that CARES, and nationally, caregiver support organizations are growing in numbers. Through the “Pick Me Ups” initiative, Pilot International will play a powerful role in encouraging and strengthening these remarkable Family Caregivers. Pick Me Ups materials, resources and manuals are available now. Email pickmeups@pilothq.org for more information.

International Care & Kindness Week
National Partnerships
In keeping with our commitment to Caring for Families in Times of Need, Pilot International has been instrumental in establishing the second week in November as International Care and Kindness Week. Pilot Clubs will promote awareness for International Care & Kindness Week through the dissemination of various marketing materials and will encourage community involvement through local initiatives focused on Care & Kindness. While Pilot Clubs are encouraged to participate in the Pick Me Ups initiative throughout the year, special emphasis will be placed on the program and on promoting awareness of the Pick Me Ups program during International Care & Kindness Week. International Care & Kindness Week materials and resources will be available August 2013
A blue butterfly, three green “S” shaped curves, a looped pink ribbon. Which one of the organizations with these logos would you join because you liked the color or the symbol? My guess is none. The reason you join a service organization is either you or a loved one has the disease that you hope to cure or prevent. Have pink ribbons automatically resulted in a cure? No, it is the extraordinary dedication of one woman who loves her sister and vows to make a difference. One woman who never gives up! One woman who makes herself heard! One woman who shares her vision!
Project Lifesaver As an organization that strives to provide timely response to save lives and reduce potential injury for adults and children who wander due to Alzheimer’s, autism and other related conditions or disorders, Project Lifesaver’s mission and goals are closely aligned with Pilot’s. Through the use of vital technology and trained emergency response teams, Project Lifesaver provides peace of mind for Family Caregivers. Pilot International is proud to continue our partnership with this outstanding organization to help them provide peace of mind for more Family Caregivers and protect vulnerable loved ones from harm.
CARE International is an organization with a long and illustrious history of service to impoverished women around the world. Pilot International is proud to re-establish our partnership with CARE to work alongside them to provide aid and support to women in poverty as they struggle to support and care for their families. CARE believes that women - when equipped with the proper resources - have the power to help whole families and entire communities escape poverty. This is the ultimate expression of Caring for Families in Times of Need, and Pilot International is honored to be a caring partner with CARE. our hearts…and in saving others, we change the future for ourselves and our families and our world.
Saving lives. It’s that simple. It’s what we do, and we do it better than almost any other service organization. What we don’t need is to be sidetracked by an image or depend on a logo to do our job for us. A brightly colored logo or handsome hunk of a celebrity will not bring new members. That opportunity and challenge is up to you. If every Pilot cares enough, we can save more lives and bring more hope than Be More. Do More. Care More. ever before…and that’s what brings in members.
BE the L
You can be that woman for Pilot. For international recognition, every member needs to Be The Logo. Be the example of service that saves lives. Speak up in your community through the lives you save and the lives you change. Speak loudly and clearly and so often that the media can’t ignore you. "Do more. Care more. Be more." looks great on a shirt, but we are not what we wear on our shirts. We are what is in

Fresh New Look for the Pilot International Website Coming Soon to a Search Engine Near YOU! Get ready, Pilots! Get set, Anchors! The updated Pilot Internatioal website is almost ready to GO LIVE in Late Summer, 2013. With a fresh new look, exciting and informative content and a dynamic, userfriendly navigation system, the upgraded site will be a key tool in our quest to grow Pilot and spread its mission of Friendship & Service to the world. A tour of the new Pilot International Homepage (pictured at left) starts with the large splash image at the top of the screen. Inviting pictures will fade every 20 seconds between images that say “Do More,” “Care More,” and “Be More” (as pictured here). These images will change often in order to highlight various Pilot and Anchor Clubs “Doing More. Caring More and Being More” in their communitites. The new PIlot International homepage is designed with the needs of current Pilot and Anchor members, prospective members and interested partner organizations in mind. Each of the prominent buttons shown here will take the viewer to a professionally-designed interior page telling them either “About Pilot International,” about “Our Causes” or “About Anchor International.” These pages are currently under construction. Clicking on “I’m A Pilot” at the top of any page will take viewers here to “I’m a Pilot” - essentially - the home page for Pilot Members. In addition to featuring the “Outstanding Pilot of the Month,” Pilots will easily find all of their club resources, materials and links to other useful information here on the “I’m a Pilot” page.
Clicking on the “Media” button will take you to the Media Page (shown right). It and other interior pages like “Our History” will showcase the great work PIlot does in a colorful and exciting way! The new site will also house interative forms, videos and other resources all Pilots and Anchors desire! Clicking on the “I’m an Anchor” text at the top of any page will bring the viewer to “I’m An Anchor” (left) - essentially the interior homepage for Anchor members and parents. A feed from Instagram - the favored social media platform for 12 -18 year olds - will pull from photos uploaded and tagged with #AnchorService. Anchor resources for students and parents will be housed here, and links to Anchor partners’ websites will be found on this page as well.
*Please note that all images here are shown at very low resolution as they are “screenshots” pulled from web. The actual on-screen images are high resolution and very clear.
The updated www.pilotinternational.org is scheduled to go live Late Summer, 2013. Stay tuned! 14

Greetings Pilots!
T
hrough your unwavering support and financial giving to Anchors in your community and beyond, our youth are growing
everyday in friendship, service and leadership! You are helping them find their “True Course Ever.” Our more than 8,000 Anchors thank you! In this section of the Pilot Log, you will be able to read about the latest happenings in Anchor International on a regular basis. Here we go! Anchor International Calendar Year: August 1st Anchors will begin their club activities, meetings and service, and the project year ends in the spring. This will ensure clubs are recognized at the Pilot International Annual Convention and Leadership Conference and allow for clubs to participate in end of the school year service. The calendar year for Anchors closely follows school academic calendars.
New Due Date for International Dues: Membership dues and liability insurance fees are now due November 1 for all Anchor members. Dues are $10 per Anchor member. Liability Insurance Fee: The international organization can no longer absorb the entire cost of liability insurance. Costs increase each year. This small fee will help the international organization offset ever-increasing insurance premiums, and allow us to provide more services to our members. The fee is $4 per Anchor member. It is also due November 1. Please help them get these monies in on time! There is no need to write separate checks for dues and insurance fees. We have a great group of Anchors coming to New Orleans for the inaugural Anchor Leadership Summit, and they are ready engage in leadership training, make new friends and lead the President’s service project while getting to know you and the greatness that lies ahead for them when they become Pilots! We’ll be sharing their experiences with you in the next Log. P 1
Ships Notes from an Anchor: Ahoy Anchors, Pilots, Friends, and Family!
My name is Elizabeth Grace Rockey, and I am overjoyed to have the OUTSTANDING opportunity to attend the 2013 Anchor Leadership Summit in New Orleans! I have been involved in Anchor Club at St. John Lutheran School in Ocala, Florida for almost four years, and I want to share my story of how I set sail to serve with Anchor International! Each year in Anchor I seem to reach for more responsibilities in taking command of our school’s ship. This year I get

to be President, Captain of my Club. I have previously presided as President Elect and Secretary. This year, Ocala Pilots - as always - were in full support of all Anchor activities and began encouraging our school to attend District Convention. As this was brand new, our school was only able to assemble two attendees, my best friend, Jenny Koch, and me. Florida District Anchor Convention was a “big thing,” and at my first time attending, I decided to run for Florida District Chaplain. As a special sign from God, I won and am now a proud Florida District Officer. Now, I thought District Convention was the top of the line, the balcony view of our cruise ship - if you know what I mean...but oh no! There’s something even bigger and better called Pilot International Convention and the Anchor Leadership Summit. Anchors all over have an amazing support system in Pilot International, The Parent Organization of Anchor International. By the grace of God, our Florida Pilots raised enough money for ALL Florida District Officers to go to New Orleans for international convention this year. ALL aboard that’s going to shore! So you see; I never even saw this amazing opportunity coming. Through Pilot and Anchor, God has opened doors that I never even knew existed.
He can do that for you too! Get involved and stay active serving others. Encourage Anchors! The Anchor Insignia is inscribed with the words “Service” and “Friendship.” I been blessed in service to my school, state, and internationally. I have made countless connections and befriended Pilots and amazing Anchors. I’m so thankful to my St. John Anchors and Advisor, Mrs. Fontaine. Ocala Anchors and Pilots, thanks for letting me set sail alongside you! Missy Ridgway, our amazing Anchor Coordinator at our local, state, and international level, you have been a blessing and have helped me become a better Anchor. God has truly blessed me with the opportunity to Do More, Care More, and Be More for Him and His Kingdom. I can’t wait to learn how else to serve my community and the world at large while meeting YOU and making many more friendships in New Orleans! Anchors Aweigh! (Did you know the phrase “Anchors Aweigh” is a report that the Anchor is clear of the sea bottom and, therefore, the ship is officially underway? This Anchor is ready to get underway and “Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez!”) God’s Peace, Love, and Joy, Elizabeth Grace Rockey, St. John Anchor Club President, Florida District Chaplain

Cookie Adair is an Outstanding Pilot! Nominated by the Pilot Club of Talladega Article by Nancy Lehe, 2012-2013 President, Pilot Club of Talladega
C
ookie Adair, Pilot Club of Talladega, is an Outstanding Pilot! A wife, mother of two successful daughters and grandmother of two, Cookie has been a Pilot for 23 very active years serving in every office of the club and its areas of service - community, education and youth. On two occasions, club members have selected Cookie as our Pilot Sweetheart...why? She supports the Founders Fund and has written several grants for our club. She has also given her time to the BrainMinders program in several local schools. The Alabama District has benefited from her leadership as a Past District Governor. Working with people is her forte! As Governor, she was instrumental in starting the Hope Academy Anchor Club as well as keeping the B.B. Comer Anchor Club alive in Sylacauga, AL. Anchor members participate in the Anchor Convention activities with Cookie as their mentor. Retiring from a law firm and working part-time for the Greater Talladega Area Chamber of Commerce, Cookie started the Chamber Ambassadors. She and her committee came up with applications for potential members. Once members were secured, rules and officers were selected. Under her guidance, youth have participated in various chamber activities at the Ritz, April in Talladega, the Talladega Block Party, the Veterans Day Parade, Sunshine Saturday (for mentally challenged children and adults) and Christmas events. Cookie sees the importance or fostering leadership in our youth as they will be the leaders of the future. Cookie has a knack for getting others interested in doing things - no matter how great or small - each is important. Our club currently has 11 members, and each year we spon-

sor the Miss Motorsports Hall of Fame Pageant. This year marks our 25th year of sponsorship, and it is a big fundraiser for our club to carry out. Cookie has been the Chairperson for the pageant several years and with her help, we have surprised ourselves with what a small club can do! Without her to spur us on, we could get lost in the rush! Pilot is in her heart, and her Pilot spirit has been responsible for our club hosting the Chamber After Dark wine and cheese party during Founders Day which allows our members to talk about Pilot. She has planned and executed several Share Pilot meetings where our members have shared Pilot with other professional women in various work settings. From her efforts, the Pilot Club of Talladega has reclaimed several members and gained new members as well. Cookie is a very creative and enthusiastic Pilot! Since brain disorders is our key focus, our club engages with both elementary school children and our local seniors. Cookie has spurred us on with a Founders Day celebration at Presbyterian Oaks which was attended by Alabama district officers and members of neighboring Pilot Clubs. With Cookie's help, our club has been able to spread Halloween, Valentines and Easter cheer and even brought a musical sing-a-long to a local assisted -facility. She has paid special attention to our mentally challenged friends as well. She has written several grants to help in Sunshine Saturday. She has also been instrumental in our club sending a handicapped person for one week to Camp ASCCA which our club does each year. If you could select the quintessential "Girl Scout," it would be Cookie. She is a GO-GETTER and a very special - no, an OUTSTANDING - Pilot in our club.

Pilots in the
Pacific By 2012-2013 Pilot International President Winnie Brewer
O
ne of the greatest joys of being President of Pilot International is having the opportunity to travel to distant places and experience different cultures and finding warm, welcoming, service-minded Pilot friends in all corners of the globe. My 2013 travels to Japan, Singapore and Hawaii, is one of the fondest memories that I will take away as President of Pilot International.
JAPAN As 2012-2013 Pilot International President, I was honored to travel with my husband, Steve, first to Hachioji Japan, a small city outside of Tokyo for the Japan District Convention at the Keio Plaza Hotel. Our dear friend Kiku met us at the airport in Narita, Japan, and we then took the shuttle to Hachioji. When we arrived we were at the very tail end of the cherry blossom season; it was truly beautiful. The first night we arrived we had dinner with Kiku at a sushi restaurant. (I think we impressed her and other members of the DAC that we could use our chop sticks at our meals!). I also

had the privilege of meeting the official representing Hachioji Japan, where they presented a beautiful tapestry that is exquisite. Steve and I got to participate in a ceremonial tea and visit an awe-inspiring Buddhist temple. One night we went to a lovely authentic restaurant with the entire Board, Appointees, and their spouses. This was a wonderful evening, and my first huge tofu experience! The hospitality and graciousness shown to us both was overwhelming. We felt so welcomed by our Japanese Pilot friends whose quiet sincerity and zeal and passion for Pilot is amazing Admittedly, it was a long and tiring journey to meet with our

international friends. 2012-2013 Japan District Governor Tamii Uchida and I chuckled about the jet lag since it took 14 hours from Atlanta to travel to Japan. She said, “I hope you will be forgiving when you see the Japan Pilots struggling to stay focused and awake [at International Convention].” I told her I now certainly understand how they feel! I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in their district convention which mirrors Pilot International convention in many ways. This is evident by their impressive flag/banner ceremony with 216 Pilots attending. I also was delighted to get to wear a kimono that evening (I felt so special in it!) along with several other Pilots. I will treasure my photo with Governor Tamii with both of us in our beautiful kimonos. Governor Tamii exemplifies true excellence in leadership style, and I was impressed at every turn by our Japanese Pilots’ true passion for our organization. They are all ready and willing to do whatever it takes to help Pilot succeed and thrive for many years to come. Their openness and eagerness to embrace all the exciting new initiatives was truly inspiring. The night of the installation of the new District leadership was equally inspiring. The Japanese Anchors took part in the installation ceremony with a bit of an American flair! The Japan District is a proud supporter of its Anchor Clubs and raised $2,813.00 at the District convention just for them. I was presented with several monetary donations to bring back to the Founder’s Fund from Japan District Pilot Clubs and even the husband of the Governor. I was honored to present a Certificate of Appreciation for a special Pilot, Kazue Tanaka of the Onomichi Pilot Club, who passed away two years ago. Kazue was a very special Pilot who left a bequest to Pilot International which is very much appreciated. All in all, I believe the Japan District Pilots are an amazing and integral part of our international history, and I hope we can continue to build that District. They have had quite a few setbacks in recent years (SARS and the Tsunami), but they continue to support Pilot International with a passion that is beyond compare.
SINGAPORE After our amazing stay in Japan, Steve and I headed to Singapore! What an incredible experience! The Pilot Club of Singapore had set up several tours of their amazing city which I thoroughly enjoyed. The National Orchid Garden and Peranaken Musuem were breathtaking, and the city itself was stunning – so beautiful and so clean! Getting to know the members of the Pilot Club of Singapore was truly a delight. I was especially honored to get to meet and spend time with Trixie Eu, a longtime member of the Pilot Club of Singapore, who is so giving of her time and financial resources both to their Pilot Club as well as Pilot International. I was impressed by the amazing service work in which our Singapore Pilots engage. They are highly involved with two

local nursing homes and shared two projects with me. The first was St. Joseph’s Home for the Aged where they are very involved in caring for those individuals. As a club, they have taken care of the beauty shop needs, and many other things that the facility requires. The staff at St. Joseph’s Home just light up when Trixie and the Pilot members come to visit. The next day we had lunch at Doreen Phua’s home with residents from the Apex Harmony Lodge. They have 40 to 60 residents bused to Doreen’s home, along with approximately 6 staff members. The Pilots feed them a delicious lunch; then they watch movies in Doreen’s movie room. Afterwards, the residents are then transported back to the Home. After the lunch, I boarded a shuttle bus with members of the Pilot Club and traveled back to the Home as well for a tour. I was thoroughly impressed by the truly exhausting but amazing projects this Club takes on!
HAWAII Our trip around the Pacific would not be complete without a visit to our two Pilot Clubs in beautiful, breathtaking Hawaii. On the evening of Friday, April 26th, these amazing Pilots hosted a reception and barbeque at the home of Janis Akuna, past COED Governor, and member of the Pilot Club of Honolulu. It was a wonderful, relaxing evening of fellowship with a beautiful atmosphere that I will treasure for years to come. I was privileged to participate alongside both Hawaii Pilot Clubs in a new service project on Saturday entitled “Picnic at the Plaza – Talk About Curing Autism, Hawaii Chapter,” a fair and benefit for autistic children and to raise funds for their group. The clubs manned game tables and provided prizes or the children. What a fun filled day for those children, and for me! These special children touched my heart in so many ways that day! I will cherish the memory of that day with those amazing Pilots and those darling children forever. It was a heartwarming experience in a beautiful land. And that is what our service and dedication to Pilot is all about. More than anything, this amazing journey has taught me that the world over, we are all the same – we are Pilots. Each and every one of us is committed to friendship and service, no matter where we live. We each want to Do More. Care More and Be More every day because we all seek to better our communities and to feel that same glow inside that I felt as I shared in these endeavors with my fellow Pilots around the world. Beautiful scenery and exotic lands are exciting, educational and certainly fun to visit. Steve and I will cherish the memory of this journey for the rest of our lives, but what I will cherish most is the knowledge that I am part of and was privileged to lead an organization that is making a difference not only in my hometown of Titusville, FL but in places all around the world. Sunshine PC of Nassau & PC Nassau The Sunshine PC of Nassau has presented BrainMinders to several groups during the past year including a presentation at Palmdale Primary School, chosen by the Sunshine PC because it has two Special Needs Education Classrooms (one of which has children with autism and other brain-related challenges). The club has devoted their fundraising efforts to the school this year to provide wheelchair accessible desks and other necessary furniture and equipment. Additionally, the president of the Pilot Club of Nassau asked Sophie Cason (Sunshine PC of Nassau’s BrainMinders ‘guru’) to please assist their members in a presentation of BrainMinders at Woodcock Primary School as their audience was over 600 teachers and children, and PC Nassau had never performed for a group that large. Ms. Cason suggested to get the children involved with the presentation as they are always such wonderful actors and actresses! Sophie brought along all of her props (skates, skateboard, scooter, Penny Panda sitting in a safety car seat, safety helmets and of course a ball for Fiona Fox and her friend Frances), so there was a lot of role playing. This presentation along with the others by the Sunshine Pilot Club was a tremendous success!

Timely topics covered included Traumatic Brain Injuries, Strokes, Aneurisms, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Dementia and caring for the elderly. The attendance exceeded expectations, and the packed room comprised a broad section of our community – all eager to learn more about these brain-related illnesses and more importantly - prevention. The presenters, all highly qualified, renowned and respected, were Drs. Magnus Ekedede(Neurologist), James Iferenta – ER Physician, Edwin Demeritte – The Bahamas’ only Pediatric Neurologist, Dr. Agreta Eneas-Carey Family Medicine and former Pilot & Nurse – Ivy Wilson. Additionally, our very own Pilot Nakeisha Simms (a former Anchor) shared her personal experience with a life-threatening brain injury from which she has recovered. She, along with special guest Renee Forsythe, advocated (for) the establishment of a support group (specifically for Alzheimer’s patients) – a take away that the Club will consider as part of its ongoing work. The presentations were recorded and complimentary copies of the DVD will be provided to some of the attendees, free of charge. The information will also be shared on an on-going basis – as we seek to educate persons in our communities about protecting their brain! The event was a huge success, and several non-Pilot attendees remarked, “Thank you so much for inviting me,....both Mom and I totally enjoyed the seminar, especially having such highly respected doctors up close and personal to share and answer questions,” and, “It was a pleasure being there, the information was very informative.”

This year the club was able to inspect 104 car seats and either replaced or gave away 54 car seats. 47 seats were destroyed because of recall, inappropriateness for the child, out of date, or damage. The Sandersville and Tennille Fire Departments were available to help destroy the faulty seats, and they also allowed the children to see inside the trucks and talk with the firemen. The purpose of the annual safety check is to ensure that the seats are age appropriate, not on a recall list, not damaged or defective, and that parents are securing their children correctly. It is important to remember that children should remain in safety restraints until 8 years of age, and many children may need booster seats beyond their eighth birthday, according to their height and/or weight. The Pilot Club appreciated the assistance of the Washington County and Brentwood Anchor Club volunteers that assisted with children’s activities. They helped to keep the children busy while waiting for inspection and helped with their visits to the fire trucks.

s the school year ends for 2012-2013, another Anchor Year goes in the history books as well! We had six new Anchor Clubs that were chartered this year, so that is exciting news for our growing organization. In order for our Anchor Organization to continue moving forward, we as Pilots need to step up and show our support for our Anchor Clubs – Anchors ARE the future of Pilot!! I would like to send out a challenge to all Pilot Clubs as you are working on your 2013-2014 Plan of Works and Budgets. Have you ever thought about adding some funding for Anchors into your club’s annual budget? It is a GREAT way to make sure you always have them in your annual plan to show your support. This could be a fund to support your Club’s sponsored Anchor Club in some way, or if you don’t sponsor an Anchor Club, then you can always show your support by donating money to send the district officers or a representative to the Anchor District Convention or An-

nual Anchor Leadership Summit. How about a joint project with your Pilots and Anchors? And have the energy that we sometimes lack, so why not get them involved to help you out? They love it, and all they ask in return is community service hours for school. Have you ever thought about hosting a joint fundraiser to help your Anchors raise money to attend the District and/or Anchor Leadership Summit Conventions? They certainly would appreciate the help and support from their “Pilot Moms.” If you sponsor an Anchor Club, have you ever thought of doing something special for the Advisor? You could include a stipend into your budget each year to provide them with a Thank You gift for their hard work and support of the Anchor Club. Your Anchor Club is ONLY as good as the Advisor, so we need to show our love and support to them as well. I hope you consider these thoughts and possibly put a few into action with your 2013-2014 Plan of Works to show your continued support to today’s Anchors – the Future of Pilot; they are so deserving of anything we can do for them!! Please send me an email on the ways your Pilot Club supports your Anchors. I would love to see some new ideas and maybe we can share them in the future. Or if you

As we have journeyed through our Pilot year – in this column - we have also journeyed through the process of a fundraiser. We began looking at how to bring a little more fun and friendship to our fundraisers. Next, we looked at some ways to organize and create committees. Last time, we delved into holding the fundraiser. The final thing we are going to talk about is the follow-up. Yes, after the fundraiser is over and everyone is probably tired of hearing about it, there is still some work to be done. Let’s consider some of those things in the follow-up. Say “Thank You”. Fundraisers involve people, and people like to feel appreciated. Let’s consider all of those involved. There are the Pilots conducting the fundraiser as well as those who supported it financially. You may also have corporate sponsors, businesses who donated items, participants or volunteers who gave of their time. The type of fundraiser helps determine some of those messages of gratitude. For example, if the fundraiser is a raffle, you would of course thank anyone who purchases a ticket as they do so, but you may want to send a personal thank you card to anyone who donated an item. For large events, you may want to put an ad in the local newspaper. Fulfill any promises. When you were planning your fundraiser, did you include any contests or incentives for members? Make sure you fulfill those promises. The highticket seller might not be as eager to put forth that effort again if they are not given the reward they were promised. It doesn’t matter if the promised reward was small and incidental. It was still a promised reward. Report to the club. Club members want to know the outcome of the fundraiser. The fundraising chair can put together some information early on and send an e-mail to club members. The first message can be sent shortly after the fundraiser, as more of a thank you to members for their work including some preliminary information and a promise to make a full report as soon as is possible. Once more information is available (bills paid, all ticket money in, 32
CARE MORE · PILOT LOG
outstanding receipts collected, etc.) another report can be made. It will take time to get everything together for a full report. A report should be made to the club regardless of whether the fundraiser was very successful or not. People will want to know. There’s not a problem with saying, “Hey, we did all we could do, but we didn’t get the profit we anticipated.” You can maybe even offer some comments people gave you about the fundraiser. Evaluate the fundraiser. It is very important to evaluate the various aspects of your fundraiser. You can use surveys of club members and event participants. Sub-committees can evaluate themselves and offer suggestions. The fundraising committee and the chair should make an evaluation and use the information obtained from surveys and subcommittees. By doing so, the committee can determine ways to improve and change the fundraiser. Start planning. Yes, clubs should start planning the next fundraiser after this one is over. This can start as the evaluation is being done. Facilities can be reserved if needed. Plans for various components can be put in place. Committees can be changed. It’s much better to get started now than to wait until the last minute. Thank you for allowing me to walk through fundraising with you this year. I hope that the information has been helpful. Happy Fundraising!!

n my small town of Andalusia, Alabama we recently played host to Coach Nick Saban, from the University of Alabama, and the “Crimson Caravan.” Over 600 tickets were sold for this event, and many of us looked forward to a nice dinner and program with Coach Saban, one of the most successful football coaches of our time. In his presentation, Coach Saban’s leadership style became very clear…to uphold and communicate the values and vision of the University of Alabama. Through videos, the audience was able to see Coach Saban in team meetings, before and after games. His high energy level and enthusiasm was very contagious to every coach and team member. Each had been provided with training and tools and developed ownership in their team. They wanted to win and were focused to achieve their goal to play their best. pilotinternational.org
Coordinators'Messages Leadership development within our clubs and organization is the foundation of Pilot International’s growth and future existence. Good leaders, such as Coach Saban, remove obstacles, manage team conflict, and build synergy and trust to uphold values and vision, ensuring that the team’s purpose, goals, objectives and process are on target. Our organization is so fortunate to have leaders who desire to develop other leaders, and I encourage each member to mentor another one. You could be that source that drives them to step out and achieve more than they imagined, enriching their life forever. Coach Saban believes in mentoring his players and was instrumental in seeing a record number of them sign on for the NFL draft this season, ready for the next level of football. “The biggest challenge we face as leaders in the intellectual capitalism world is to encourage people to unlearn what they’ve learned about avoiding responsibility and learn a new ‘I am responsible’ behavior. Helping people regain their own authority and power to respond appropriately in work and life is a leadership skill of the highest order,” (Belasco & Stayer, Flight of the Buffalo). To develop good leaders and team players, we must be motivated, be willing to work hard and accept diversity, and to be responsible, respective and responsive. Coach Saban’s philosophy to turn boys into responsible men, with a passion for football, to give back to the community, become leaders and be the best at whatever skills they are given, is a wonderful lesson for us all. y articles for the 20122013 club year have focused on club development using strategies that will enhance membership in an existing club or in building a new club. We have discussed the need to have ‘key sparks’ (motivated volunteers) in a group to create excitement so others want to join. We have discussed several major points of club building including (1) looking for and recruiting the volunteers who are all around us just waiting to be motivated and asked to join; (2) identifying at least two key players in the group aka ‘Sparks’ who have the personality to recruit friends, neighbors, relatives, co-workers to attend the next Gathering; (3) meeting at a location that presents the ‘best climate’ (the meeting site) at various times; (4) having the attractive marketing tools that show what an amazing organization Pilot International is and will entice others to join; (5) naming the new group of volunteers; (6) establishing a charter

date for a new club; (7) beginning to identify the service project(s) to be offered within the community; (8) sponsors could appoint the first set of officers for a new club or the new group of volunteers may elect among themselves; and, (9) be sure that the District Officers are involved with the chartering of a new club, and for an existing club, keep the District Officers informed. On this one day, across the United States, volunteers come out and give of their time to help their communities. This parallels many of the projects that our districts do throughout Pilot. Over the course of this past week, leading up to our community Day of Action, I’ve talked with individuals about why they are volunteering, what is it about this project that gets them motivated? Time and time again, I’ve gotten the answer of…. “it makes me feel good,” or “I enjoy being a part of a larger group knowing that what I’m doing is really impacting those in my community who need it the most.” Pilot’s motto of Do More. Care More. Be More. sums up exactly what the individuals I’ve talked with have said…. we all want to be a part of a bigger picture, something that matters and makes a difference in our communities. For us, as Pilots, it’s our community projects and how we really make the connection to how they do truly impact the lives of those around us. Whether it is through a Service Dog project, volunteering at a Camp that assists those with special needs, it really is about being connected to a bigger picture. Finally, I’d like to thank you all for allowing me to share with you my thoughts on engaging members, volunteering and projects throughout this year. Remember Pilots, as Dr. Dorothy Height said, “Without community service (and projects), we would not have a strong quality of life. It’s as important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It’s the way in which we ourselves grow and develop.” Do More. Care More. Be More. SUMMER 2013

In Memory of Lorene Scott
January 14, 1923-May 14, 2013 Founder of the Pilot Club of Cullman, Alabama The Pilot Club of Cullman was chartered May 30, 1981, and after being educated about "all things Pilot," President Lorene Scott was at the helm and ready to go! Within a short year the Pilot Club of Cullman had received the Community Service Award from Pilot International. Within a short year, the Pilot Club of Cullman had received the Community Service Award from Pilot International for establishing the Pilot Light Home for Abused & Neglected Children. Lorene had the unique ability to motivate others to want to help and support her endeavors throughout her life. She was always the first in line to “sign up” and “show up” and the first to give encouragement. Lorene turned ninety years old this past January, and until her recent illness she had never missed a club meeting or fundraiser even after battling macular degeneration for several years. The club held our Annual Professionals Day Fashion Show/Luncheon April 24th, and Lorene had sold tickets to the event over the phone - still showing us all just what you can do if you really want to get things done! It is with much sadness that we have had to let our precious Pilot sister go, but we will carry with us forever so many wonderful memories of her leadership, friendship and the way that she had of making each of us feel so very special. Most importantly, Lorene showed us by example that caring and reaching out to others and serving through friendship and service is the true key to a very rewarding and successful and joy fulfilled life. Good bye our sweet friend…. Beverly Wilkerson Pilot Club of Cullman, Alabama

A
Anchor Clubs (Youth Development & Leadership) In 1952, Pilot began to recruit youth volunteers through the establishment of Anchor Clubs, a volunteer service organization for young people. Today, there are over 8000 Anchors worldwide with new clubs and members being added monthly. Through professionally developed curriculum and strategic partnerships with national organizations such as DoSomething.org and others, Pilot encourages and provides opportunities for Youth Development & Leadership around the globe.
B
Brain Safety & Fitness Since 1992, Pilot International has worked in the area of brain-related service. In 2013, Pilot narrowed its focus to Brain Safety & Fitness as the majority of our clubs were working in this area. Pilots support several TBI camps. Pilots also participate in Pilot International’s BrainMinders brain-safety educational program for elementary-aged children and in local safety fairs and bike rodeos. Pilots are proud partners of Safe Kids Worldwide and are champions of our own “Think H.A.P.P.Y. Be H.A.P.P.Y. Be BRAIN FIT!” public awareness campaign for brain fitness and mental longevity.
C
Caring for Families in Times of Need In 2013, Pilot International introduced the “Pick Me Ups” initiative for Family Caregivers that seeks to promote awareness of the unique needs of these special individuals. Through both fundraising and hands-on service work, local Pilot and Anchor Clubs provide a “little Pick Me Up” for deserving Caregivers in their communities. Working directly with local agencies to identify deserving Caregiver candidates, Pilot Clubs grant the specific “Pick Me Up” experience chosen by the recipient. Pilot International was also instrumental in establishing the second week of November as International Care & Kindness Week. Pilots are proud supporters of Project Lifesaver and other organizations that seek to provide aid, respite and peace of mind to Family Caregivers of all kinds.
