THE PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Connie J. Moore // Pilot International President

W

e all have one thing in common, and that is that we volunteer in order to make our communities better! During this upcoming year I will try to visit as many Pilot Clubs as I can because I believe our strength is down in our clubs. The excitement and enthusiasm down in our clubs is contagious!! CATCH IT!! The 2016-2017 Pilot District Governors are listed in this issue of THE PILOT LOG! As the PI President I am so very proud to serve with these leaders of your districts. They are truly an AWESOME group; they inspire me every day with all they are doing for your districts and in their communities. In this Pilot Log issue you will see what our wonderful Anchors did during the Anchor Summit in Montreal this summer. The mural they painted was truly remarkable!! In addition you will see the awards for the Anchor Advisor of the year, Anchor Club of the Year and many more Anchor awards. Congratulations to all, for your dedication and continued support to our young men and women, and to the FANTASTIC Anchor Clubs who contribute every day to helping and serving others!! You are all so REMARKABLE, and I know I speak for all Pilots when I say we are all so very PROUD of you!!! Several important topics I would like to remind everyone about. One, do not forget that all PI Matching Grant requested are due at Pilot International Headquarters no later than October 15th. Secondly, Pilot international and local Pilot Clubs around the globe recognize the second week in November as International Care & Kindness Week, a week-long public awareness campaign meant to bring awareness to how simple acts can change a day, a life or the world by simply showing someone you care. International Care & Kindness Week encourages people to “Take time to Care and Be Kind.” (November 7-14, 2016). Lastly, do not forget to submit your applications for the Pick Me Up Grants. The PMU Grants deadline is December 15th. These grants (up to $200) are given to clubs in order to do a kind act of caring for people within your communities. At its most fundamental level, the Pick Me Up Grant program is here to provide additional care and kindness to caregivers, individuals and groups so we can realize our vision that all are valued. Thanks to all who have submitted articles and pictures for this Pilot Log. I would like to thank Julianne Gleaton, Director of Communications for all her work on this log.

Looking forward to a WONDERFUL Pilot Year!

❖❖FUNDRAISING by 2016-2017 PI Fundraising Coordinator, Suzanne Lester

25 years ago, when I joined our Pilot Club, all the fundraising money was generated from the members. Not today! Fundraising efforts bring us together to Do More, Care More and Be More. At any level it provides the resources to do great things in our communities. By this time, most clubs will have their plan of work with fundraising determined for the year. However, there is always room for ideas or improvements. Have you tried acquiring sponsorships that are available from businesses or corporations with a budget for community involvement? Just like grants, the key is to ask or apply. If you want to pursue sponsorships, begin by preparing a “sponsorship packet”. Use a pocket folder with information about your club and the event or reason you as asking for support. Having a club brochure and a business card with contact information should be included. If you are working on a specific event, prepare a sponsorship form with levels of sponsorships offered and how much you are requesting for each level. Always offer something for the sponsorship request. For example, offering to feature your sponsors in print advertising, on a shirt, on your website and newsletter, in the program book if you have one, or offer them an information table at your event. Ask if they have a banner to display. Advertising is costly for businesses and this is a form of advertising promoting their community support. Asking for money is difficult for some of us, but with this plan, you are offering sponsors exposure for their donation. In some cases, I have been told the funds are already assigned to community service organizations for the year. If so, you can ask if your club could be placed on the list for next year. Leave your sponsorship packet and be sure to note on your calendar when to return. Never forget the thank you, even if they do not contribute. Be a happy Pilot. It shows even when you don’t think anyone is looking. Contact me at LES1612@aol.com if you have any comments or questions. I will be delighted to hear from you. Pilot Lifetime Achievement Award Rhona Espinoza The 2016 Pilot Lifetime Achievement Award was given this year to Rhona Espinoza of the Pilot Club of Belen, New Mexico. Rhona is a great cheerleader for Pilot. She is known as the ‘Woo Hoo’ Pilot, always cheering on other Pilots and any project or task brought before her. Rhona started her journey with Pilot in 1997 when she joined the Pilot Club of Belen. Over the years, she has served on the club, district and international levels in both elected and appointed positions. She has served in every appointed position within the Southwestern District, as well as served as their Governor, not once but now three times. She served in 2007-2008 with PI President Judy Breaud. In 2015, she was asked to step back in and help the district during its re-building efforts. She just finished serving the first of those terms in 2015 – 2016 serving with PI President Shannon Clegg and is now serving her third term during 2016 – 2017 alongside PI President Connie Moore. True to her ‘Woo Hoo’ nature, the Southwestern District is growing and celebrating their successes. They are working to establish two new clubs this year. Rhona also served as PI Chaplain for two years and served on the PI Membership Committee. It’s because of her can do spirit, willingness to take on challenges and her belief in Pilot International that Rhona was awarded with the Lifetime Achievement award in Montreal. 2016-2017 PILOT INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT CONNIE MOORE

A PRESIDENT IN PERPETUAL MOTION BY PAIGE HENSON Special to The Pilot Log

14 | FALL 2016 PILOTLOG

AS THE 87TH PILOT INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT, CONNIE MOORE HAS AMBITIOUS PLANS FOR HER 2016-2017 YEAR IN OFFICE. IT IS A YEAR ALREADY BOOKED TIGHTLY WITH STANDARD PILOT BUSINESS INCLUDING FREQUENT TRAVEL AS THE DEFINITIVE PILOT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE WORLD; EXECUTIVE DECISION-MAKING; OVERSIGHT OF HEADQUARTERS STAFF AND LEADERSHIP OF THE PILOT EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE; OFFICIAL VISITS; STRATEGIC PLANNING MEETINGS; FUND RAISING EFFORTS; FALL COUNCILS; DISTRICT WORKSHOPS AND SEVERAL HUNDRED WEEKLY EMAILS REQUIRING HER IMMEDIATE ATTENTION. ALL BY ITSELF, ONE TASK STANDS ALONE, REQUIRING MONTHS OF EXTENSIVE PLANNING AND PREPARATION -- THE FORTHCOMING ANNUAL PILOT INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION IN JULY. NEXT SUMMER THE EVENT WILL BE HELD IN LAS VEGAS AND, AS ALWAYS, THE PILOT INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT WILL PRESIDE. JUST THREE MONTHS INTO THE PILOT PRESIDENCY, CONVENTION PLANS ARE ALREADY UNFOLDING DAILY. Amid the entire furor, Pilot International Connie Moore of Moline, Illinois expresses delight and downright joy about the experiences ahead of her. Retired after 38 years as a civil servant with the U.S. Army’s Department of Defense, she is now able to focus wholly on honing and sharpening the Pilot International experience for both current and new member volunteers. Her career has prepared her well for the challenges inherent in Pilot leadership. In a recent interview, President Connie stated her goals for the organization, which are accomplishments above and beyond the standard executive tasks required of every PI President. They include: ❖❖ Hiring a highly-relatable executive director at Pilot Headquarters in Macon; ❖❖ Up-dating Pilot’s already-excellent BrainMinders™ program, which serves as the organization’s trademarked, signature project; ❖❖ Establishing and growing PI’s Compass Club program for college students/community; and, ❖❖ Creating new ways for American Pilot Clubs to bond with the dedicated volunteers in Pilot Clubs outside the United States. Perpetually in motion, Connie completed studies for a master’s degree in Business Administration two years prior to her retirement. Connie had sought ways to give back to others, and she immediately felt an affinity for Pilot and thought it was the volunteer venue she had been waiting for. Eager to contribute, Connie rose quickly up the Pilot leadership ladder over a four-year period. She has never looked back.

In a recent interview, it was evident the new PI President possesses all the grit and determination required to lead an international legion of community volunteers. At a diminutive 4’11 ½”, President Connie packs all the punch, power, drive and know-how of a seasoned veteran. “I had many remarkable learning experiences during my years as a civil servant with the U.S. Army,” she says. “Once, I spent 30 days with the 101st Airborne at Fort Polk, Louisiana, sharing a tent with nine soldiers, and serving as the Operations Officer to prepare the unit for deployment to Afghanistan. I was also a Battle Captain in an emergency operations center that supports U.S. troops around the world, and I managed contracts totaling over $2 billion for years.” Perpetually in motion, Connie completed studies for a master’s degree in Business Administration two years prior to her retirement. Connie had sought ways to give back to others, and she immediately felt an affinity for Pilot and thought it was the volunteer venue she had been waiting for. Later, when she learned the organization needed strong, willing leaders at the district and international levels, she was confident her business experience, acumen and leadership skills might come in handy. Eager to contribute, Connie rose quickly up the Pilot leadership ladder over a four-year period. She has never looked back. FAMILY MATTERS Connie is the oldest of six siblings, three sisters -- Terri, Lori and Sara; and two brothers, Paul and Randy. Her dad, Richard Harden of Davenport, Iowa, is a youthful 85-yearold retiree “still going strong” and married to Connie’s stepmother, Karen, also retired. The Pilot President is especially close to her 89-year-old twin aunts, Betty Lee and Betty Lou, and says her Aunt Lou is “like a mother to me.” “As a child I spent summers with Aunt Lou and her family. Her four daughters were like sisters to me.” Two great sources of pride are Connie’s sons, Brian, 41, who lives with his wife Tami in Davenport, Iowa and are expecting their first baby, in early October (watch for Pilot news about the new baby, President Connie’s first grandchild!). Brian is a journeyman pipefitter supervisor, and Tami is an occupational therapist at a local hospital. Connie’s other son, Kevin, 39, is engaged to Brianna Wallington and the couple lives in Wilton, Iowa, even as Kevin serves as COO and part-owner of the second largest mechanical company in the U.S. and Brianna is a busy CAD designer. “Both of my sons are caring and giving young men. They are by far the highest achievements of my life,” she says. As a single woman in the fall of 1993, Connie had no intention of remarrying after being solo for four years;

Connie and Lew wed in 1995, and her sons Brian and Kevin Conklin walked her down the aisle. “The boys seemed happy to give me away that day,” she laughs.

however, she and Lew Moore fell in love at first sight on a blind date planned by well-meaning friends. Connie’s quick wit and Lew’s dry humor made the match inevitable. “Lew is truly the love of my life,” she says. “He makes me laugh every day.” The Moores have been wed for 21 years and they have travelled extensively, their laughter spanning the globe – to Spain, Portugal, Venezuela, Aruba, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Austria. They are also unabashedly-devoted parents to a 10-year-old cock-a-poo, Bridget, who, Connie reports, just took her firstever ride on a plane. “She was a trooper!” In whatever spare time Connie can create in her universe, she enjoys reading, scrapbooking, and volunteering. Volunteering is her mainstay. Mary and Greg Beard, Connie and Lew’s long-time neighbors report that when Connie talks about Pilot, she beams. “From our living room windows we can see Connie’s little office window just above the trees. As we are shutting down for the night, most times we look up and say, ‘Connie is still up working on her Pilot business!’” says Mary. “That’s every night she’s home when she’s not travelling for Pilot somewhere. Connie truly believes in the work the organization does. She is a devoted leader.”

Now in its 95 Anniversary year, Pilot International has been lead by 87 Pilots elected to the organization’s highest office in the years between its October 1921 founding and today. The reason for this discrepancy (95 years with only 87 PI Presidents) is simple: several early Pilot International Presidents served two or more year-long terms. These women included the organization’s 2nd PI President, Lula Flinn Estes of Tuscaloosa, AL who served from 1923 to 1925; 4th PI President Mary Graham of Selma, AL serving from 1925 to 1927; 5th PI President Anne Council of Sheffield, Alabama serving from 1927-1929; 6th PI President Virginia Rangeley of Montgomery, Al serving from 1929 to 1931; and 7th PI President Nell Stanley Gardner of El Paso, TX serving from 1931 to 1933. 16th President Etha G. Hall of Greensboro, NC served the longest term in Pilot International presidential history, elected in 1941 at the onset of World War II. She continued in that capacity until the war’s end in 1946. The 20th Pilot International President Ruby Newhall of Gainesville, FL was installed as Pilot International President at the Chicago convention in 1949, but died expectantly after serving only a few months in office. As PI First Vice President at that time, Susan C. Beyer of Albuquerque, NM, completed Newhall’s 1949-1950 Pilot Presidential term.

❖❖LEADERSHIP by 2016-2017 PI Fundraising Coordinator, Lisa Patterson

Greetings fellow Pilots! My name is Lisa Patterson, member of the Luncheon Pilot Club of Andalusia, Alabama District, and it is my honor to serve as your 2016-2017 Leadership Coordinator. I have served on the club level as a director, vice-president and president. On the district level I have served as secretary, Lt. Governor, Governor Elect and Governor. In another organization, the Alabama Community College Public Relations Association, I served as treasurer (2 years), vice-president, president, and immediate past-president. For the past 36 years I’ve been happily married to Scott Patterson. We have two handsome sons, one daughter-in-law, two precious grandsons, two four-legged children, three grand dogs, and two grand cats. I work full-time at an Alabama Community College as the Advertising, Publications and Foundations Specialist. Throw in college photographer and web master, plus whatever anyone else decides not to do and you have a better idea of how busy my 40-hour plus week is, but I still have the desire to serve Pilot. Have any of the following thoughts run through your mind when being asked to serve as an officer or director? “I don’t have time.” “I’m not a leader.” “I’m not qualified to be a Leader.” “My club just asked if I would serve as a ____________ (fill in the blank) - have they lost their mind, I can’t do that?” You are not alone! Those were some of the very thoughts that have gone through my mind EVERY time I’ve been asked to take on a leadership role. It didn’t matter whether it was club, district or on the international level. When Connie called and asked if I would serve as the Leadership Coordinator, the following thought went through my mind. “What could possibly make her think I could do that?” I immediately asked about the time commitment, what was expected, weighed out the time commitment, asked if she was sure she wanted me and agreed to give it my best shot. I encourage each of you to think seriously about accepting or offering to fill a leadership role. If you are nervous, start small. Ask questions about what is expected, and then make an informed decision. Push yourself to grow and learn in Pilot – it’s definitely worth it and there is no better way to expand in your knowledge of Pilot. This year I would like to provide valuable leadership information and help to grow Pilot leadership from the club level up. We all tend to recycle leaders. Why? Why not start to grow our leaders. Provide information and help so new or seasoned Pilots will want to step up in a leadership position. Wouldn’t it be great if we had elections for each position, especially at the District level? Leaders are not necessarily natural born leaders. Leaders are also created by listening, learning through reading and pushing themselves to “Do More. Care More. Be More.” If you are serving as a Leadership Coordinator, please send me your contact information. I would like to establish a contact list where we can easily share information. If you have suggestions on ways to grow and encourage new leaders etc, I would love to hear from you! Please share what you are doing to grow your leaders, what works, what hasn’t and any new ideas we could investigate to help grow leaders and our leaders grow. Lisa B. The Pick Me Up packets contained a small pen, notebook, tissues and hand sanitizer that were handed to the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight veterans as they were about to board the plane that would take them to Washington, D.C. Pictured are Pilots Maureen Wolff, Bruno Wolff, Kathy Herrewig and Barb Pierce

The Pilot Club of Carrollton, GA, in its focus on brain safety and health, presented 124 bike helmets to Sand Hill Elementary for all first grade students. ❖❖A IS FOR ANCHOR! by 2016-2017 PI Anchor Coordinator Janice Yielding

With Autumn in the air, it is time to kick off our new year in Anchor! This is a great time to charter a new Anchor club in your area if you are not already a sponsor. If you are a sponsor, look around at other area schools for new avenues to charter another Anchor club in your area. However, do not lose track of the established Anchor clubs. Many times we let these clubs flounder causing them to eventually fold. There are so many ways to be supportive of your Anchor Club. Words of encouragement from seasoned Pilots help to guide these young women to ensure that they continue with the true course of Anchor. Pilots and Anchors meeting together provides opportunities for Anchors to observe Pilots at work. Anchors can share new ideas and views with Pilots to help put a new twist to an old project to bring it to life. Financial support from sponsoring Pilot Clubs is a must for Anchor Clubs. This gives them just a little extra for the budget to ensure that Anchors and Pilots are working together toward a common goal. It does not have to be a large amount to have an impact with either club. Continued support from Pilots ensures that Anchors remain in existence. It also provides a springboard for new Pilot members through Pilot student members, Anchors who are in college at the present time. Hopefully, these young members will be active with your Pilot club and remain there to continue the Pilot spirit. What a win-win situation for all!!! Pilots, thanks for all you do in your support of Anchors. Without you, Anchors would be a thing of the past instead of the club of the present and future. Please continue to be forward thinking with Anchors. “DO MORE, CARE MORE, BE MORE!!!” In Pilot Friendship and Service,

Janice

❖❖MEMBERSHIP by 2016-2017 PI Fundraising Coordinator, Barbara McKenzie

Hello Pilots. My name is Barbara McKenzie and I am honored to serve as the 2016 – 2017 Pilot International Membership Coordinator. I was a member of the Sayville High School Anchor Club in the Northeast Potomac District. I have been a member of the Pilot Club of St. Lucie County in the Florida District since May of 1992. I have served and continue to serve my club and district in many capacities. I have been married to my wonderful husband for 13 years and between us we have 5 wonderful children and 8 beautiful grandchildren. I am a certified and registered Pharmacy Technician and worked in the same independent pharmacy since 1989. Membership is a vital part of our organization. One of the main imperatives of our new strategic plan is membership. In Montreal, I presented a workshop; “The Nuts and Bolts of Membership”. This presentation is available on the Pilot International Website. The focus of this workshop was retention. Throughout the coming year I will share with you all of the ideas that were presented in this workshop. In addition, we will be publishing a Membership Manual this year. In this manual will be ideas for clubs and districts to help increase & retain members as well as the steps to follow to establish a new club. Sample forms and letters will be included to make these tasks easier. If I can help your club or your districts in anyway please contact me, I am always happy to help. Barbara McKenzie 2016 – 2017 Pilot International Membership Coordinator Bmckenzie0624@gmail.com In Pilot Friendship and Service,

Barbara
