THE PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Shannon Burks Clegg // Pilot International President

A

s this Pilot year comes to a close we are reminded of all which has been accomplished this year. At first when it was time to write this letter, I thought it would be bittersweet, however as I put pen to paper (albeit my computer screen), I found a new sense of excitement. After serving on the Pilot International Executive Committee for six years I have seen many changes over this time. One of our biggest accomplishments this year is the adoption of our Pilot International Five Year Strategic Plan. With this plan we will begin charting the course to our 100 year anniversary in 2021 and beyond. Inside this edition, we have shared stories on how your dollars donated to Pilot International Founders Fund are being used. There are also stories highlighting some well deserving students who have received Pilot International scholarships. Beginning on page 18, you can see clubs that received Pilot grants and how they are putting that grant money to use in their communities. I hope that many of you have made plans to attend the 2016 PI Leadership Conference and Annual Convention in Montreal, July 6 – 10. We have an exciting program planned and look forward to seeing you all at Le Centre Sheraton. On Wednesday night our opening ceremony will include an invigorating program from Drum Café of Canada. You won’t want to miss this moving and exciting program! We have over 15 workshops planned throughout the convention, offering something for everyone. Learn how clubs are successfully recruiting new members; how a club chose a non-traditional way in which to meet; all about PIFF; how to start an Anchor Club and so much more. There are also great speakers prepared to motivate and educate us. Be sure to read all about our newest Anchor Club in Douglass County, Georgia. I would like to congratulate all the new Anchors and sponsors for all their hard work to make this Anchor Club a reality. Special thanks goes out to the Pilot Club of Sweetwater, whose members were diligent in assisting these young people in establishing a Community Anchor Club with a total of 143 charter members. This Spring I had the opportunity to travel to Japan as their ECR. It was an awesome experience to visit their beautiful country and meet so many of our Pilots. Unfortunately, as their convention was starting, word of the devastating earthquake in the Kumamoto prefecture came to us. As the hours passed, we all learned more of the level of destruction. After returning from Japan, we received word that nineteen of our members had lost their homes to the earthquake and continued tremors. You can see more from my visit on pages 14 – 15. Helping those in need is at the core of being a Pilot. By making a donation to the Safe Harbor Fund, you are helping provide emergency funds for individual Pilots that have been affected by disasters such as the earthquake in Kumamoto and the flooding across South Carolina and Texas that destroyed many homes. Your contributions will make a difference in the lives of your fellow Pilots. You can donate by clicking on the DONATE button on the Pilot webpage. In closing, thank you all for your continued dedication to Pilot International. Your dedication inspires me every day. In Pilot Friendship and Service,

❖❖NETWORKING AT CONVENTION by 2015-2016 PI Projects Coordinator, Suzanne Lester

Are you ready for the best opportunity of the year? The Pilot International Annual Convention & Leadership Conference in Montreal is an idea way to meet and network with Pilot members convening from all over the world. Sharing ideas, information and efficient club systems can bring new vitality to your Pilot Club. Back at home, how can you start a “Pilot” conversation with a non-member? 1) ASK someone if they have ever heard of Pilot. 2) ALLOW them to share what (if anything) they already know, then fill in the blanks. 3) SHARE your own uplifting experience of Pilot friendship and service. (This is progress.) 4) EXCHANGE contact information so you can share more! Pilot was founded nearly 95 years ago by people who wanted to make this a better world. The projects were ambitious! For example: ❖❖ In 1940, Pilots donated an ambulance to the Red Cross for use in England during WWII. ❖❖ U.S. Pilots adopted a five-year project to rebuild the war-torn French village of Vimoutiers, Orne, France, which was accidentally bombed by allied troops (1949) ❖❖ Cancer research laboratories at the Salk Institute were established with a Pilot contribution of $10,000. ❖❖ We undertook humanitarian projects like feeding 80,000 hungry people in Alaska and Japan through the “Meals for Millions” program in 1959. ❖❖ We sponsored Project HOPE by equipping and maintaining a medical ship’s pediatric ward in the mid-1960s. ❖❖ With Pilot efforts, there are elementary schools in Guatemala ❖❖ Peruvian women in Pilot’s PROJECT: Womanpower received micro-loans to set up cottage industries. ❖❖ A contribution of $200,000 within a two-year period was raised for the United Cerebral Palsy Association in 1985-87. ❖❖ Our financial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 1988-90 brought founder Danny Thomas to our International Convention in Anaheim, CA Everything you do as a Pilot and every project you undertake continues to build on the legacy. Partnering is a great way to work with organizations and share a wealth of information. Recently, my club partnered with a group repairing bicycles to make them “better than new” for children in need. It started 30 years ago with one child named Joshua and his Christmas single wish. He received his reconditioned bike and this launched the “Bikes for Tykes” Program in our area. Today more than 20,000 children have received that iconic gift of joy and childhood independence …a bike! Pilots help out by providing helmets for those who receive a new bicycle from the hardworking volunteers at Bikes for Tykes. Their volunteers provide bike “tune ups” at the annual Bike Rodeo/Safety Fair, and Pilots provide the helmets and ensure they fit each young head perfectly. This is teamwork at its finest! As Pilot volunteers, we touch countless people every day. By continuing to provide life-affirming projects in our own communities, we honor the members in community service before us. Thank you for all you do in the name of Pilot. In keeping alive the spirit of those who came before us, we can all Do More. Care More. Be More.

ALTHOUGH NOT NECESSARILY AWARDED EVERY YEAR, THESE TWO FUNDS ASSIST QUALIFIED APPLICANTS WHO DEMONSTRATE GREAT POTENTIAL TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF OTHERS. PILOT INTERNATIONAL’S SUPPORT RESONATES FOR GENERATIONS TO COME. 2014-2015 Ruby Newhall Scholar, Prashant Wani, a doctoral student from India, is currently involved in biological research at Kansas State University to determine how specific “molecular machines” are assembled within cells, an important study that will lead to more efficient treatments for neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s, cancers, and other devastating disorders. He applied for, and subsequent

received, his Pilot scholarship through the Sunflower Pilot Club of Manhattan, Kansas. Dr. Wani’s research was recently published in a prestigious scientific journal, Nature Communications, an open-access journal dedicated to publishing high-quality research in all areas of biology and the physical, chemical, and earth sciences. Papers published by the journal represent important advances of significance to specialists within each field. 2015-2016 Ruby New Hall Scholar Marisol Mayorga of San Jose, Costa Rica, recently thanked Pilot International, and her sponsoring Pilot Club, the Pilot Club of Sunflower, for assisting her academic opportunities:

THE RUBY NEWHALL SCHOLARSHIP MEMORIALIZES THE 1949 PILOT INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT RUBY NEWHALL OF GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA. THE EVENT MARKED JAPAN’S 26TH PILOT DISTRICT CONVENTION. Pilot International President Shannon Clegg and her Co-Pilot Bill Clegg were welcomed guests of Japan Pilots at their 26th Annual District Convention held April 15 – 17 at the Lake Biwa Otsu Prince Hotel. President Shannon and Bill flew from Greensboro to Osaka, where she was greeted by Kiku Kubo, Honorary Pilot and longtime Japanese translator. From the Osaka airport, they traveled to Otsu for the convention. Sightseeing ventures in Japan included a trip to the city of Kyoto on Wednesday. Thanks to a wonderful guide and Kiku Kubo their translator, they were able to tour Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion) which is a Zen temple in northern Kyoto whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf. Formally known as Rokuonji, the temple was the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and according to his will it became a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect after his death in 1408. Kinkakuji was the inspiration for the similarly named Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion), built by Yoshimitsu’s grandson, Ashikaga Yoshimasa, on the other side of the city a few decades later. ANNIVERSARY DINNER WITH JAPAN PILOTS

President Shannon began her official duties by meeting with Governor Hiyama and the 15-16 DAC and convention committees; she gave the Executive Committee Representative (ECR) report; presented the 2016 Pilot International Founders Fund awards and participated in the installation of the 2016-2017 District Officers. The Pilot President said upon her departure, “This was an exhilarating and memorable experience for me. As a child of a military family, I have visited and lived in many places, but this trip was especially meaningful to me. The Japan Pilots are extremely gracious and they represent the very best of Pilot compassion for others and excellence in volunteer service.”

“On May 13, it was my honor and privilege to be presented, with other Pilots, to Her Excellency, Dame Marguerite Matilda Pindling, who is an Honorary Pilot. She had high praise for the Pilots of The Bahamas she had worked with in the past,” said the Pilot President Elect, a member of the Pilot Club of Moline since 2005. Connie explains that Her Excellency, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas is the vice-regal representative of the Bahamian monarch, currently Queen Elizabeth II of England. Because the queen is unable to reside in all realms under British rule, she appoints Governor General representatives to carry out her duties as Queen of the Bahamas. These distinguished individuals serve terms as long as is “Her Majesty’s pleasure,” but usually for no more than five years. Brain-Storm Warnings

BRAIN-STORM WARNINGS GRANT PROJECT

Scottish Pilot Sylvia Nelson talks to a local baseball coach about the concussion awareness magnets provided by her club.

18 | SPRING 2016 PILOTLOG

IN THE FALL OF 2014, THE STAR QUARTERBACK OF THE SCOTLAND HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM, LAURINBURG, NC HAD A NEAR-FATAL TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY. SHOCKING ENOUGH, BUT WHEN A PILOT MEMBER’S NIECE SUFFERED A CONCUSSION WHILE PLAYING YOUTH SOCCER IN 2015, MEMBERS OF THE SCOTTISH PILOT CLUB OF LAURINBURG, NC TOOK ACTION. THEY SUBMITTED AND RECEIVED A PI FOUNDERS FUND GRANT FOR PROJECT BRAINSTORM WARNINGS, AN AWARENESS AND PREVENTIVE PROGRAM THAT TEACHES THE SIGNS OF CONCUSSION AND TRAUMATIC HEAD INJURY AFTER A SPORTSRELATED HEAD INJURY. Scottish Pilots knew youth coaches could recognize a concussion incident and were aware of what action to take when a player receives a blow to the head; but they felt parents, teammates and others should also have this knowledge readily accessible. Targeting local student athletes and their families around Laurinburg, Pilots provided 3,000 4 x 6-inch refrigerator/file cabinet magnets listing the symptoms of concussion. They distributed them widely at youth football kick-offs, jamborees and team sports meetings throughout the fall. Scotland County Schools, Scotland County Parks and Recreation, and the Optimist Baseball League also helped get the word out. During their planning process, Scottish Pilots also learned of a great need for new helmets for the Scotland County Parks and Recreation youth tackle football league. Fifteen helmets were added to the club’s original project plan, and a challenge was issued to other community groups asking them to purchase new helmets, too. The Laurinburg Rotary Club agreed to participate. To earn matching funds for the Brain-Storm Warnings grant from PI, a “Bowling for Brains” bowling tournament was held. These efforts received valuable public media coverage in print and on the radio. Scottish Pilot Club friends followed the project’s progress on the club’s FaceBook page. Every Scottish Pilot Club member participated in some way -- from planning & research; grant writing & submission; ordering, counting & packaging magnets; and awarenessbuilding through one-on-one discussions with others. Parents surveyed after the project reported the information was useful and readily-available to them in the form of the magnets.

Great Fund Raising Contest… With No Bite!

The winner of the Luncheon Pilot Club of Danville, VA’s 3rd annual fundraiser, “People, Pets & Pilot” is Billy Hardy and his dog, Luci. Each year, Luncheon Danville Pilots stage an increasingly-popular fund raising event that draws attention to their volunteer work while helping those with brain-related disorders and diseases within their community. Here’s how it works: The club asks Danville citizens to submit a photo of their beloved pet, or one featuring both owner and pet. Deadlines are set for submission. Photos are enlarged and displayed prominently at a designated site in Danville, where locals can stop by and “vote” for their favorite photo by submitting a donation to help the club support its brain-related service projects. The photo garnering the most votes wins a grand prize, presented at a Pilot lunch meeting. Last year’s prize was a basket filled with $350 worth of donated goodies. 2015-2016 Luncheon Danville Fund Raising Chair Melanie Vaughn says this project is so successful, it has become the members’ “signature” fund raiser. All contributions stay within the Danville community, and the event generates local press recognition for the club. Pilots Help ‘Bright & Shiny’ Dreams Come True

Joan Hurd, president-elect of the Pilot Club of Naples, FL, was touched when she recently visited a local elementary school to properly fit young riders with new bicycle helmets. Much to her surprise, one boy demurred, telling Joan there was no need for him to have a helmet; he didn’t own a bike! That day she found out 19 other children at the school were “bikeless,” but probably too shy or embarrassed to speak up. Joan immediately contacted Bikes for Tykes founder and president, Skip Riffle, and soon 24 bright and shiny bikes of all sizes were delivered to the school. Now, every child at the school had a reason to wear a Pilot helmet! In the last three decades, the Bikes for Tykes organization has given more than 20,000 new or refurbished bikes to children and adults in the Naples area. The idea was born 30 years ago when Skip Riffle granted a little boy’s Christmas wish for a bike to call his own. Several years ago, Naples Pilots embraced Riffle’s mission and partnered with his group to offer BrainMinders™ puppet shows and safety protection helmets. Recently, Club President-Elect Joan and Sue Lester were invited to represent Naples Pilots by joining the Bikes for Tikes Board of Directors, a distinct honor in the Naples community.

Talking Boards for Students Pilots of the Pilot Club of Muscatine, IA helped special needs students with communication deficits at Madison Elementary in Muscatine. The club gave the Davenport School District a grant for $2,000 to provide tools for the dynamic, new “Let’s Chat!” program. Now, children who do not communicate well can point to pictures or press buttons on laminated boards and pre-programmed computer pads to chat and make requests. Muscatine Pilots were treated to a tour of the school to see the new system in place. PILOTLOG SPRING 2016 | 23

Anchors in the News

ANCHORS LEAD “WISHFUL” THINKING IN MANTACHIE With the help of some hardworking friends from other schools in their area, and the generosity of a few local corporate sponsors, members of the Anchor Club of Mantachie High School, MS made a wonderful wish come true for a sick child, Brodey Houpt and his family of Dorsey, MS. Brodey, age 7, has Medulloblastoma, a tumor located in the cerebellum. In September, Mantachie Anchors mobilized under the theme Make Change to raise money competitively for Brodey’s special wish, submitted to the regional Make-A-Wish Foundation. Brodey wanted to visit Hawaii. Anchors held Make Change events at Mooreville Elementary, Mantachie Elementary, Tremont Attendance Center and Mantachie High School to raise money. Mooreville Elementary won the Make Change competition by raising nearly $2,000 for the trip, allowing them to host the big “Wish Reveal” event on January 21, a one-act play performed by Mooreville students and teachers and directed by the Anchors. The Anchor Club of Mantachie not only lined up community business sponsors for the wish reveal event at Mooreville, they continued to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation throughout the month of February. Itawamba County educators donated $1,110.00 through their “Jeans for Wishes” events held each week during the month. Participants paid $5.00 for the privilege of wearing jeans to work on Fridays. Dorsey Attendance Center added to the funds raised with its Make Change Day during the month by raising $753.69 Brodey and his family left for Hawaii on January 23,2016 to spend the week playing in the sand( Brodey’s wish) while the rest of his classmates endured cold weather in the Dorsey, MS area. The Anchor Club of Mantachie is sponsored by the Pilot Club of Mantachie.

Anchors in the News

HOW MANY ANCHOR CLUB MEMBERS DOES IT TAKE TO VOLUNTEER? ONLY 30!

The 2015–16 Alpine High School Anchor Club chose 5 service projects at the beginning of the year and are serving on committees dedicated to raising money for those projects and, perhaps more important, working hard to see project goals realized. Anchors have worked the monthly food distributions at the Food Pantry of Alpine and participated in Trick or Treat for Hunger, walked dogs, participated in adoption drives, and socialized with cats at the Alpine Humane Society. They walked with the Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend to bring awareness to domestic violence, and worked at the Déjà vu Thrift Store. They carved pumpkins for the Sunshine House’s Halloween party, helped with Meals on Wheels, and participated in the Sunshine House’s Wild West Fund-Raiser and Dance-a-Thon. And if that weren’t enough, they helped the Alpine Public Library with the Art Walk Silent Auction, serve on the library’s Teen Advisory Board, and are producing videos about books that address young people’s different interests. Club members chose the projects and are funding their participation in the projects with various fund-raisers. The Pilot Club of Alpine chartered the Anchor Club in 1981 and has worked closely with it since.

❖❖A IS FOR ANCHOR! by 2015-2016 PI Anchor Coordinator Janice Yielding

A IS FOR ANCHOR!!!! Sea captains use the anchor to hold their ships fast when wanting to keep their ships in place. This is the same for Pilots. We use Anchor Clubs to hold our Pilot Clubs in place. Pilot Clubs that sponsor Anchor clubs are seeing Anchors become a part of their Pilot Club. This helps to maintain membership as well as give new perspective to the Pilot Club. Sponsoring an Anchor Club is very important, but you must be an active part of the Anchor Club to help bridge the gap between Anchor and Pilot. As an anchor holds the ship, the pilot must be the guide for the ship’s pathway. Opportunities abound to help guide these young women/men into community service and friendship with others as we work side by side on local projects. As Pilots, we must mentor these young adults into the avenues of projects for their community. Community service cannot become a thing of the past, but we must see that it is the future of our Pilot Club. Build relationships with your Anchors to help hold your club on the right course for the future of Pilot! “DO MORE, CARE MORE, BE MORE!!!”
