T
his is always a special time of year for us all!! The end of one calendar year and the start of another year! Pilot International has had so many changes this past year and it feels like we are on the right track to do wonderful things together!!! During this last calendar year we had a wonderful international convention in Montreal, Canada. We installed an AWESOME Executive Committee and we have hired a REMARKABLE Executive Director for Pilot International!! We offered discounted early registration until December 31st and we have scheduled outstanding speakers for our convention this summer in Las Vegas at the Paris Hotel. Among our accomplishments so far have been the chartering of new clubs. We have chartered 2 new Pilot Clubs and 2 new Anchor Clubs!! Thanks to Past International President Diana Kingree, we chartered a club in the Florida District (Rails 2 Trails Pilot Club). The Chartering Ceremony was done by Governor Debbie Thompson at Florida District Fall Council on Oct 29th in Panama City. Thank you to Diana and all the charter members of this new club. We cannot wait to see what WONDERFUL accomplishments are on the horizon for you all!! Southwestern District Governor Rhona Espinoza invited me to attend the Chartering Ceremony for the Pilot Club of Albuquerque and it was FANTASTIC!!! This was my first chartering of a new Pilot Club and it was a humbling experience!! What an honor. It is so very exciting to see a club that started with a handful of members say that they will be at 100 members before long!! WHAT A MARVELOUS GOAL!! I am so very proud of this club and the building of leadership in the Southwestern District. Starting next year we will be chartering another Pilot Club!! The next club scheduled to be chartered is the San Jacinto Pilot Club in the Texas District. I will be attending this club’s Chartering Ceremony which is scheduled for January 21, 2017. This is a VERY unique Pilot Club in that it is made up primarily of past Anchors!! In Batesville, MS we have another Pilot Club which is scheduled to charter in late spring or early summer!! We have re-chartered one Anchor Club in the Mississippi District and in addition to that, chartered 2 new Anchor Clubs, Holly Pond, AL and North Delta, MS. Also, we have 3 Anchor Clubs which were in a reorganizational state now become active Anchor Clubs once again. We have heard that there may be 2 or 3 additional new Anchor Clubs which may charter this Pilot year. THANKS TO EVERYONE AND THEIR HARD WORK!! Our membership is continuing to grow and I know that with the guidance and leadership of our new Executive Director, Nancy White, we are going to make our membership continue to grow!! Wishing all Pilots the HAPPIEST OF HOLIDAYS!! THANK YOU ALL FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO IN YOUR COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD!! WE WILL CONTINUE TO CHANGE COMMUNITIES AROUND THE GLOBE!! Our newest club is the Pilot Club of Albuquerque NM, chartering on November 12, 2016. We have two more clubs that will be chartered very soon, one in January and another in the spring. It is an exciting time to be part of Pilot International.

❖❖FUNDRAISING by 2016-2017 PI Fundraising Coordinator, Suzanne Lester
Is it FUN or is it hair RAISING and stressful? It is all about an idea and good planning. Fundraising is a necessary component of every Pilot Club. We are always searching for a better idea how we can generate money to make our Club projects successful. As a board member of several nonprofit organizations, I experience these same fundraising idea challenges and competition to attract people and sponsor support. The best case fundraising event scenario is to reflect what your Pilot Club stands for in your community. This is your time to shine. Don’t be afraid to try something new or to evaluate an event to improve or discontinue it. Times have changed and after many years, the same idea may not work. Pilot clubs are very creative. Just look over the last 10 or 20 issues of the Pilot Log. From the pet with owner photo contest, auctions, fashion shows to raffles. The Pilot members make it work. The Gulf to Lakes Pilot Club members celebrate their “Parade of Trees” event. It was a rousing success because they make it a beautiful experience. Spaghetti dinners are provided by the Pilot Club of St Lucie County each year. Bahama Pilots are known for their elegant dinner dances. There are concerts, walks and 5K runs. Pilot members of the Riverview Club make great pies as a fundraiser. The list goes on and each idea sounds like fun. There is always work and it requires teamwork. Risk is usually a factor and must be considered in your planning. Planning is a master key to success.
I would like to hear about your unique fundraising events throughout various Districts and how your goals for Pilot International are being met. On November 12th, the Pilot Club of Albuquerque was Chartered. A great showing of Southwestern District Pilots came out to be a part of this historic event. President Connie Moore honored the group by reading the Charter, a letter of congratulations and she installed their new executive board!!! Governor Rhona Espinoza was the mistress of ceremonies and was assisted by Governor Elect Ginger Mercer and Treasurer Frances Salas. Membership Growth Coordinator Teresa Scott and Pilot Club of Los Lunas President Nancy Schmierbach were also instrumental in getting this club chartered and a beautiful vision realized. Welcome Pilot Club of Albuquerque and especially President Louisa Baca, President Elect Emily Gurule, Secretary Martha Cesarano, Treasurer Veronica Gutierrez and Director Yvonne August who lead this amazing group. By the end of the year, the club should have a dozen members.

One of the main reasons I joined Pilot was because I wanted to serve my community. Projects define what Pilot is all about….serving those around us. You can find a service project practically anywhere if you are willing to open your eyes and look for the need. One of the best ways to get started on a service project is to get to know the members in your club. What special talents do your members have? What is important to them? What’s their background? Who do they know? You might find that you have one member who loves to knit or crochet, but has no one to make anything for. You could get a group together and make hats for the babies in the NICU or blankets for the homeless. Perhaps you have members who have a military background or family currently serving. The Pilot Club of South Bend (MI-IN District) teamed up with a Veteran’s Center for Homeless Veterans. They provided tents to cover the vendors, and made food and clothing available to the homeless at a Military Stand Down. Pilots have also connected to the Working Person’s Store in South Bend. They are paying for boots for homeless veterans should they be required for a job position. Maybe members in your club love sports. You could host a Special Olympics in your community or help train athletes for the Olympics. Take time to get to know your members and what their interests are. Great Fund Raising Contest… With No Bite!
The winner of the Luncheon Pilot Club of Danville, VA’s 3rd annual fundraiser, “People, Pets & Pilot” is Casey Molloy and her dog, O.D. (Other Dog). Each year, Luncheon Danville Pilots stage an increasingly-popular fund raising event that draws attention to their volunteer work while helping those with brain-related disorders and diseases within their community. Here’s how it works: The club asks Danville citizens to submit a photo of their beloved pet, or one featuring both owner and pet. Deadlines are set for submission. Photos are enlarged and displayed prominently at a designated site in Danville, where locals can stop by and “vote” for their favorite photo by submitting a donation to help the club support its brain-related service projects. The photo garnering the most votes wins a grand prize, presented at a Pilot lunch meeting. This year’s prize was a $400 gift certificate donated by Eden Jewelry. 2016-2017 Luncheon Danville Fund Raising Chair Melanie Vaughn says this project is so successful, it has become the members’ “signature” fund raiser. All contributions stay within the Danville community, and the event generates local press recognition for the club. The Pilot Club of Iowa City Receives Human Rights Award 18 | WINTER 2017 PILOTLOG
The Pilot Club of Iowa City was honored by the Iowa City Human Rights Commission by being named the 2016 recipient of the Rick Graf Award. This award recognizes “long-term commitment to a specific cause for the benefit of a specific group of persons.” Nominated by the Iowa City Public Library, it was noted that “dozens of local organizations have benefited from the selfless work of the 60+ members of the club.” Specifically cited in the nomination was the group’s focus on both education and the prevention of traumatic brain injury and brain related disorders and disabilities. This includes 20 years of grants that allow for the purchase of large print books for the Iowa City and other Johnson County libraries. These Club and Pilot International grants also have helped organizations and agencies that work with citizens with mental illness, those on the autism spectrum, have dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, and provide assistance for their caregivers. The Club has also been active in awarding scholarships to students pursuing advanced degrees in healthcare fields related to brain health. In the past ten years the Club grants and scholarships have totaled more than $75,000. In addition to distributing grants every December, members of the Pilot Club of Iowa City donate time to many projects such as serving Free Lunch through the Crisis Center of Johnson County, and helping purchase and install special accessible playground equipment for children with disabilities at Hoover Elementary, Terry Trueblood Recreation Area, and the ARC of Southeast Iowa. A newer project supported by the Club is that of providing “Pick Me Up” care packages to the Certified Nurse Assistants (CNA’s) working at area health care facilities. Each gift bag contains useful and fun items and is a way for the Club to express gratitude to these professionals who are caring for those with brain illnesses and injuries. The city of Iowa City has been given the rare designation of being a “UNESCO City of Literature.” Since its inception in 2003 the Club’s book club has actively participated in the “One Community One Book” program where all in the community are encouraged to read a specific book that deals with Human Rights. The club has embraced this educational program via reading the annually named book, participating in discussion groups, and attending lectures and author’s presentations, thus becoming very well informed about the wide range of Human Rights issues that are present world-wide, including the rights of individuals with disabilities. In closing, the nomination noted that “The Pilot Club of Iowa City’s vision of ’A World Where All Are Valued’ and the work of its members to achieve this vision seem to perfectly fit the spirit of the Rick Graf Award.” The Award was presented to Club President Chelsey Markle at a Breakfast held on October 26, 2016 and was attended by Pilot Club members.

Greetings fellow Pilots! I hope your Pilot year is off to an unbelievable start. It won’t be long until our clubs, districts, and Pilot International look for 2017-2018 leaders. Are you and your club members prepared? Have you identified those that would make great club and/or district officers and Pilot International leaders? So, what is leadership and where does it come from? “Leadership is the art of leading others to deliberately create a result that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.” Leadership occurs when you encourage those around you in a positive way. It can come from anyone at any level and in any role. A leader can even be a first year Pilot who leads his or her team to success behind the scenes. This may be a great person to begin their leadership on your Board of Directors. A leader might be identified through official authority and power or simply through inspiration, persuasion and personal connections. We have many Pilot Clubs that are working hard to educate and establish leaders in their clubs and districts, but unfortunately we continue to have those that are not. Maybe some of the following ideas will help to encourage those that don’t have established leadership training and development. Most clubs indicate they use mentors or “Pilot Pals” that take a new member under their wing, explain all our acronyms, answer questions, and work together in fundraising and projects. Most clubs include the standing rules in their Yearbooks. It is a great idea for you to include your District Standing Rules as well as Pilot International’s. If you don’t want to include them in the yearbook, then make sure everyone knows where to find them and encourage them to read, read, and read some more. In several clubs, the out-going officer mentors the in-coming one. They meet as needed and encourage the new officer to contact any Club member when assistance is needed. Other clubs send their members to training sessions done by their District at Fall Council, District Convention, or at a Regional Workshop for training officers. Some clubs have a Leadership Discussion in their club newsletter.

The Pilot Club of Great Bend in the KS-MO District is particularly creative in their leadership training. They not only have mentors, but they also have Leadership Mentors. What a great way to encourage leadership. They teach or show by doing and encouraging others to participate. In their club they encourage praise and always thank their members for doing, being, and caring. The Division chairs and co-chairs share, explain, and go over the budget, calendar and responsibilities when they pass the torch to the incoming division chairs. In fact, President Rhonda broke it down in the following recap. Teach by doing – learn by sharing; Praise and thank members – recognize achievement; Ask – know that if at first you don’t succeed to try again and ask for help; and Have Fun – laugh more and make friends. The Pilot Club of Cullman in the AL District starts with a Board Orientation. They create a notebook of material to be discussed. The notebook is delivered to each board member a week before they meet. During their meeting Board members are given an overview of the By-Laws and their importance to the operation of a successful Pilot Club and also present the Alabama District Standing Rules and explain their importance. If you currently have a plan in place to encourage leadership I applaud you. If you don’t, I certainly hope you will put some sort of leadership training in place. Pilot needs leaders that are prepared and willing to step up to the plate and I encourage you to look for and help train them. If I can be of help, please feel free to contact me at any time. 27th Annual Lite-A-Lite Fundraiser for Pilot Club of Hohenwald The Pilot Club of Hohenwald held its 27th annual Lite-A-Lite fundraiser December 2 with the lighting of their Christmas tree in the bandstand at Wilhelm Telplatz Park. Lite-A-Lite was the club’s first ever fundraiser in December 1989 after receiving their charter in November 1989. Pilot Club Makes Donation to Pilot Light Home
The Pilot Club of Cullman recently made a budgeted donation of $7000.00 in support of the Pilot Light Home. Previously, a private donation of $3000.00, given to the Pilot Club, was donated to the Pilot Light Home. The Pilot Light Home is a home for abused, neglected children in Cullman County and is one of the primary projects of the Pilot Club for over 30 years. The Pilot Club hosts several fundraisers on a yearly basis to support its projects. These fundraisers include a Rummage Sale, a Spring Fashion Show, Football Ticket Raffle and Priester’s Pecan Sale. Luminaries of Love
To start off the holiday season, the Pilot Club of Panama City, FL held Luminaries of Love in downtown Panama City in conjunction with the city’s lighting of the Christmas tree. Luminaries were bought “in memory of” or “in honor of” a loved one. Jon Sewell read the names as music was played in the background, followed by a memory walk. The Anchor Clubs helped out by placing the luminary bags around the fountain, lighting the candles, and cleaning up. ANCHOR HAPPENINGS There has been so much momentum in the Anchor program this year. We have a great team of District Anchor Coordinators along with an outstanding PI Anchor Coordinator that have really been working hard with our members. We have received so much interest from many of our Pilots for starting an Anchor club in their community. Several new Anchor clubs have already chartered and we are working with several more that intend to charter this Pilot year. Working with Anchors brings a renewed energy and excitement to all who get involved. With the holidays fast approaching, it is almost time for the Anchor members to celebrate Christmas break so we wanted to share some important reminders: ✓✓ District Anchor Conventions are right around the corner. Be sure to calendar the date to be part of this exciting convention. ✓✓ Early registration is $150 for the 2017 International Anchor Summit in Las Vegas - now through January 15, 2017, a savings of $50. A great savings for each member! ✓✓ The clubs are really busy with some amazing projects . . .please make sure to send your photos and articles to headquarters so we can share on the Anchor FB page and possibly in the next issue of the Pilot Log. Anchors participate in warrior beach retreat Pilot club members from the Pilot Club of Panama City, FL and Anchors participated in Bay County’s Warrior Beach Retreat recently. The nonprofit Warrior Beach Retreat brings wounded veterans and their spouses to Bay County twice annually for a week of relaxation. The organization was co-founded in 2009 by Linda Cope after her son was injured in 2006 while serving in Iraq. The roughly 50 retreat attendees were recognized during a parade and ceremony with local citizens along the route waving American flags in support of their service. The Pilot Club also contributed a “pamper” basket for the spouses (caregivers) who were treated to a day of pampering. Anchors Have Been Busy In Mantachie. September and October were busy months for the Anchor Club of Mantachie. During the month of September, Anchor members and officers were initiated and installed to the club. Anchor members also prepared pick-me-ups for the local teachers at Mantachie High School and helped at seat-belt check at the local elementary school. During Mantachie Fest, they provided water to race participants at the St. Jude Gold Ribbon Run. During October, Anchor members sold “Paint the Town Pink” ribbons to raise money for the Women First Resource Center in Tupelo. They prepared “popcorn hands” for special needs classes at Mantachie Elementary School. Anchors participated in the “Popcorn for Kids “ Activity with the special needs classes by reading stories, painting pumpkins on paper bags, and providing the “popcorn hands” and a drink for snacks. Anchors continued with activities by preparing for Red Ribbon Week, Oct.24-28, 2016. Red Ribbons were placed around the school campus and small ribbons were given to all students at Mantachie Elementary to help promote the theme, YOLO, You Only Live Once. A poster contest was held for students in grades 7-12 with a winner selected from each grade. The Anchor Club Mantachie is sponsored by the Pilot Club of Mantachie to encourage young students to work in their community to Do More, Care More, and Be More !!!

“Do More, Care More, Be More” is a tremendous slogan for Anchors to have as a foundation to follow. Anchor Clubs provide pathways for leadership and new friendships as Anchors bond through service to their community. These clubs are a springboard for Anchor members to become viable members of their communities, making these young men and women aware of service to others. As Pilots, we can provide our support and leadership to guide Anchors into various projects that ensure growth as future adults. This will ensure the future of not only Pilot Clubs, but also our nation. Congratulations to all the new Anchor Clubs that have formed during the past quarter. What foresight the sponsoring Pilot Clubs have to encourage these young people into service! If your club is not sponsoring an Anchor Club, look in our area for young people who can serve others. You can also provide monetary help through Pilot International for leadership opportunities for Anchors. Supporting Anchor Clubs helps us, as Pilots, to “Do More, Care More, Be More”.

As we spend time with our families during the holiday season, it is also time to share our joys and rewards of our Pilot Family with others. As we spend time helping others in our communities we are always looking for others to join our Pilot Family and share the wealth of rewards we feel as we Do More, Care More and Be More. To help with the search for new members a new Membership Guide has been completed and will be available soon for download on the Pilot International website. It includes ideas on recruiting, retaining and reclaiming members. These ideas will be useful to all of us as we are looking to grow our Pilot Families. And don’t forget when we do increase our family, to engage the new members. Do not let them sit idle. They join us because we are a service organization. Be sure they are included in whatever they wish to be. Caution, don’t over work them – they may feel overwhelmed. I do want to say Congratulations to two new clubs; Pilot Club of Alburqueque in the Southwestern District, chartered on November 12, and the Rails to Trails Pilot Club in the Florida District, receiving their charter on October 29.
