Dear Pilot Friends,

A

t last, after a very long winter, it is finally spring! Time to clear away those cobwebs – to make our homes fresh and clean! Time to wash those windows - to see all the buds and blooms bright and clear. Time to plant some flowers - to celebrate and nurture the rebirth and renewal we enjoy in the spring. Spring is all about renewal, revitalization, energy and growth. In essence, it is Springtime at Pilot International, too, and I could not be more excited! In this issue of The Pilot Log, you will read about how the results of the 2012 Strategic Planning Survey are guiding the rebirth, renewal and revitalization of our beloved organization as it sits poised on the verge of its next hundred years. Many of you have already seen and have embraced Pilot’s new branding – guided largely by your ideas from the survey. We cherish your overwhelming support for this fresh new look. I am also pleased that so many of you took the time to share your thoughts about Pilot and your dreams for its future. With the results of the survey and your input in mind, much thought, energy and genuine love for Pilot has gone into the planning of Pilot’s new initiatives which we will unveil at this year’s international convention. I know you will be excited by the good things to come! I am honored to have served as your International President during this momentous year, and I am eager to watch as the seeds we plant today blossom into a vibrant and thriving Pilot tomorrow. Springtime is also District Convention time at Pilot International. These much-anticipated annual events are already well under way. Many of you have already enjoyed yours and others will be attending their own over the next few weeks. Much care and effort goes into the planning of these wonderful gatherings, and this year, especially, there is so much good news to share! District conventions are a great opportunity to enjoy spending time together celebrating your clubs’ accomplishments and celebrating the friendship of Pilot. I wish you all the best! In addition to the District Conventions, don’t forget the 2013 Pilot International Annual Convention and Leadership Conference July 10-14 in New Orleans, Louisiana. It promises to be the best yet! Our Anchors will be Celebrating Excellence at their inaugural Anchor Leadership Summit just as we will definitely be Celebrating Excellence – the Excellence of Pilot – at this year’s outstanding international convention. So much excitement is in store! Not only will we debut our new International initiatives for the first time at international convention, but we will also share with you the highlights of this amazing Pilot year. Pay special attention to the “2013 PI Annual Convention & Leadership Conference Special Events” flyer on page 8 of this edition of the Log. You will not want to miss any of those fabulous events!

Without a doubt, Pilots are out in the world right now making outstanding and lasting contributions, leading lives of distinction that deserve recognition. Every Pilot is special, and every Pilot is vital. We want to share their stories! Outstanding Pilots from around the globe may be featured in upcoming editions of The Pilot Log or profiled for feature stories on the Pilot International website or other publications coming soon from PIHQ. What makes an “Outstanding Pilot?” That is for YOU to decide! Do you have a special member in your club who leads the kind of life you believe would inspire others? Does that Pilot contribute to his or her society outside of Pilot Club in a way you feel is especially important? Do you have a member in your club with a unique career or someone who has made a name for themselves in a singular and positive way outside of their work with Pilot Clubs? Then tell us! Suzy Toronto: Artist, Author, Philanthropist…”Feel the Tingle!” Recipient of the Inaugural Pilot Inspiration Award “Celebrate Excellence” Luncheon - Friday, July 12, 2013 Pilot International is pleased to announce that acclaimed artist, author and philanthropist Suzy Toronto will join us at Friday’s “Celebrate Excellence” Luncheon where she will be presented with the Inaugural Pilot Inspiration Award. Suzy is known worldwide for her colorful, whimsical, inspirational work designed to encourage and empower all the “Wonderful Wacky Women” of the world. (She even has a line of work designed for the Wonderful Wacky Men in her life!) Her quirky, fun style touches the hearts of fans worldwide – including many Pilots! Wonderful Wacky Women – Inspiring. Uplifting. Empowering. These are the primary virtues of Suzy Toronto’s art and writings which have touched the hearts of millions of

The Pilot Inspiration Award The Pilot Inspiration Award is given annually to a charismatic non-Pilot whose personal story, unique personality and dedication to service embodies the Pilot charge to Do More, Care More and Be More. Their special contributions to society have motivated others to take up their cause and effect real and lasting changes in communities around the world. Through their singular approach to life, Pilot Inspiration Award recipients use their individual talents to inspire others to raise the bar and seek new ways to Do More in the world. Care More for others, and Be More amazing, inspiring and transformational every day.

women across the globe since 2002. In her own words, “I’m not a genius. I simply paint and write about the women around me – mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and other relatives – ordinary women who have accomplished extraordinary things. I’m passionate about converting unrecognized feats of quiet day-to-day heroism into colorful images and poignant poetry. Suzy’s designs originated over 20 years ago with her first print “She Who is With Child.” She drew it for her then 8 year-old adopted son, Chase, who innocently asked, “Mommy, who is she who grew me in her tummy?” Suzy patterned this image after herself, right down to her bare feet and wacky hair. She left the image faceless, so he could imagine what his birth mother looked like. She wanted him to know that he was with the mother God intended. After much prodding and encouragement, Suzy departed from her trademark floral and landscape watercolors to bring to life a series of whimsical, wonderful, wacky women – each one celebrating the essence of her life. These characters became prints, manufactured by Suzy Toronto Studios – the company she co-founded with her husband

Al Toronto. Suzy has since continued to develop new lines and shares her message of inspiration through various retail outlets nationwide. Her work is not only meant to inspire and encourage her fans. Suzy Toronto Studios also produces and sells the popular “Pink Ribbon Sisterhood” line of giftable art which donates 25% of all profits directly to various cancer research and other support services for women. Her business ventures keenly support fellow wacky women in the ultimate fight of their lives (cancer) and other aspects of female empowerment. The Pink Ribbon Sisterhood website states: “We are women. We believe in women. We uplift women. We empower women. And we support women whenever and however we can. This collection is dedicated to that end.” Along with the “Redneck Riviera Chapter of Wonderful Wacky Women,” Suzy organizes and supports an annual 4 mile race in the Florida Gold Coast area. 100% of the race profits go to support the Florida Hospital Foundation for Ovarian Cancer Research in Orlando, FL. Her many enterprises also include a line of “Support our Troops” giftable art which supports our military and military wives.

Dr. Kathleen Sturgis: It’s A New Day – Start With “Why?” General Session - Friday, July 12, 2013 Dr. Kathleen Sturgis is committed to having a positive impact on the lives of others. In particular, she has a passion for nonprofit leadership and has worked extensively in the areas of board development, strategic planning and volunteer recruitment. Her experience with nonprofit organizations is complemented by her “front line” understanding of leading a nonprofit, recruiting volunteers and friend‐raising. As an expert in organizational development and interpersonal and group communication, Dr. Sturgis has coached leaders and teams in both for‐profit and nonprofit organizations and in virtual and non‐virtual settings. She is well known for her ability to enhance communication effectiveness, facilitate change management and reinvigorate strategic planning processes. Her optimism and positivity have inspired many. Most recently, she served as the Executive Director in charge of leadership development at American Support, a growing telecommunications organization with an at‐home, virtual workforce spread across the United States. As a business owner and consultant, her collaborations have brought her to serve organizations from a wide range of for‐profit and nonprofit industries including advertising and marketing, aerospace and defense, arts, church and civic, education,

finance, government, healthcare, manufacturing, sports, telecommunications, etc. Having earned her doctorate from the University of Illinois and her masters from the University of South Florida, she has presented at international academic conferences and is regularly sought as a keynote speaker and motivator. Kathy strives to inspire passion for life, purpose and work and has written a children’s book, Dance of the Chameleon, that seeks to inspire even the youngest of leaders.

“What’s Cooking With Pilot? Those in-the-know will want to arrive to international convention early! Tuesday attendees will be given the exclusive opportunity to participate in Pilot’s first “What’s Cooking With Pilot” event. Staged at the rollicking and oh-so-tasty New Orleans School of Cooking, this limited-seating engagement will be your chance to have one-onone time with the Pilot Executive Committee, to hear all about what is new and what has been going on with Pilot, to give your feedback and suggestions and find out just what is “Cooking” with Pilot International all while being educated, entertained and FED by the charismatic instructors at the New Orleans School of Cooking. Since opening in 1980, The New Orleans School of Cooking has introduced countless visitors from around the world to the wonderful food and rich culture of Louisiana and New Orleans. Classes are held seven days a week in their beautifully renovated 1830’s molasses warehouse, located at 524 St. Louis Street, between Chartres and Decatur in the French Quarter – an easy walk from the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel. NSOC instructors (all well-known local chefs) teach the basics of Louisiana Cooking in a way you’ll never forget. Fun is a primary ingredient in their kitchen! At NSOC, Creole/Cajun experts teach New Orleans specialties such as Gumbo, Jambalaya and Pralines, and season them with history, trivia and tall tales. It’s a “ga-ron-teed” good time for all.

IMPORTANT HOTEL INFORMATION In order to avoid being charged an extra $35 by the hotel, please be sure to book your room in one occupant’s name and ONE OCCUPANT’S NAME ONLY. Many hotels are currently charging an extra $35 fee if rooms are booked in more than one name. This is a charge you can and should avoid. Room rates at the Sheraton New Orleans hotel are $139 plus tax per night for international conference attendees. The rate is good for three days prior and three days after the event. The New Road for Pilot Results of the 2012 Strategic Planning Survey and What it Means for Pilot International By Alison R. Coons

P

ilot International stands – right now – today – at a watershed moment in its history. In September, Pilot International will celebrate its 92nd anniversary – almost a century of Pilot! Now, it is the unique opportunity and responsibility of our current governing body to begin to chart a new course for Pilot, to steer it through its next 100 years – to take it down an exciting new road! In order to move forward and guide our organization to future success, last fall, Pilot International set out to determine what our clubs do and how our clubs operate, to try to better understand them and their needs. Through the 2012 Strategic Planning Survey - we set addressed three main things about our organization: WHO is a Pilot? WHAT do Pilots do? HOW do they do it, and HOW can they do it better? The results might surprise you! WHO is a Pilot? 93.7% of Pilots are female, and 80% are over the age of 50. Twenty-nine percent of you have been Pilots for more than 20 years, and over 50% of you have served (or are currently serving) as a local Pilot club or district officer.

What does this tell us about Pilots? It tells us that you are dedicated, and it tells us that you are loyal. It tells us that you have a history with this organization and that you are personally invested in its success. It tells us that most people who join Pilot remain Pilots and seek to serve Pilot, and that is encouraging! But it tells us something else as well. Above all, these results tell us that in order to grow Pilot into the vibrant and vital organization we envision for the future, we need to begin to bridge the gap. The survey showed us that only 3% of Pilots are under the age of 35, and only 11% fall between 35 and 50. In order to continue the tradition we’ve enjoyed of longevity and loyalty to Pilot, we must begin to cultivate younger Pilots in greater numbers. WHAT do Pilots do? Pilots plan, engage in and enjoy providing community service within their local communities. In addition to hands-on service, most clubs raise funds for other organizations that support brain-health awareness initiatives or other worthy causes.

The survey asked respondents to describe and list the various service projects their club engaged in each year. We received over 500 individual written responses to this question alone - no two of which were the same. For example, many of you provide financial and hands-on support for Project Lifesaver, Our Neighbor, Challenged Child and Friends, Safe Kids, GAWD, Alzheimers’ related initiatives, TBI support groups, various daycare/community centers or group care homes for adults with disabilities and the Parkinson’s Association. You volunteer in hospitals and make blankets or hats or quilts for the needy or provide teddy bears for children in desperate circumstances. You raise and donate money for a myriad of charitable causes within your own communities. You plan and engage in Pilot’s annual Brain Power Walk and you present the BrainMinders skits to schools and groups across the country; you support the Pilot Founders Fund and its affiliated scholarships. You support many youth related causes including several successful camps for children suffering from traumatic brain injuries and the League of Dreams - Baseball League for Kids with disabilities. You are also fervent supporters of Anchor Clubs, the youth arm of Pilot International, and many of you share your service activities with these bright young people. The survey tells us that WHAT Pilots do is SERVE. Each Pilot club fills its own much needed local niche, but exactly what each club does or what each club supports varies greatly. Each of you and your clubs is to be commended for the excellent work you do in your community. Pilot International is proud of the impact your service has on the lives of those around you. The results of the survey are clear in the fact that Pilots exist to serve and support at the grass-roots, local level. It is also clear that our clubs’ service activities and interests are truly all over the board. In order to remain viable into the future and to create the international identity and brand awareness necessary for Pilot to grow, we must address what PILOT INTERNATIONAL does in a succinct and unified way. By carefully studying the survey results and analyzing what the majority of our clubs support, Pilot International will soon announce a specific brain-health related initiative that we will champion – on an International level.

HOW do Pilots do what they do? The survey asked a number of questions aimed at determining how clubs currently operate and how successful (or unsuccessful) members felt their clubs are at achieving their stated goals. When asked, “What do you believe your club does particularly well?” Fundraising rose to the top as the number one answer, but others responded proudly about their ability to work well together as a team. Several respondents reported that they felt their club was especially adept at recruitment; one member simply stated, “We are good at doing whatever we take on.” Another said, “We all show up.” More than a few humorously said, “Get together and eat!” In essence, Pilots achieve their goals through dedication, teamwork and friendship. Among other questions, the survey also asked, “Pretend you have a magic wand that you could wave over Pilot. What would you change or improve about Pilot International.” This question garnered thoughtful – and sometimes tough – answers from many of you. One respondent said, “A more distinctive focus. I realize that focusing on the brain is important, but it is often hard to explain.” Many called for better, more frequent communications from PIHQ. Many called for a targeted marketing campaign aimed at garnering more national exposure and brand recognition for Pilot. Most all of the respondents mentioned the need for increased membership. When asked specifically what you would like to see changed or improved, you overwhelmingly said, “More members.” Many others responded that they believed a fresh new look and better materials to help breed awareness of Pilot would go a long way towards helping club morale and helping Pilot achieve club growth. One respondent simply stated, “Growth…younger members…better structure.” Pilot International has heard you loud and clear. We are determined to improve how Pilot operates by introducing new measures that will encourage both club growth and national recognition. We will define what Pilot International does and determine how we can do it better. In order to achieve this, at this year’s international convention, we will announce three new target areas for Pilot

International. Each of these areas is being developed around doing more good deeds in our communities, bringing awareness to Pilot and positioning the organization for growth both in membership and financial areas. Please do not worry that we are “taking away something” - something that you love and believe in. We support your local efforts, and we are keeping our causes that we hold dear; we will continue to work in a brain-related area, and we will continue to work with our Anchors. What you will see at convention is the new way we will be doing it. In the meantime, you will notice that certain other changes have already been put into place that will help us answer the needs you have so clearly defined - most notably - our new branding strategy (see details below)! The Pilot International website is also getting a major makeover! Many of you mentioned the need for a more modern, user-friendly website that is easily accessible for members but also does a better job of defining and marketing Pilot. In today’s society, an organization’s website is its first impression to the world. Anyone seeking to know anything about Pilot International or Anchor International

is going to go to our website first. We want to ensure that what they find there quickly and easily provides them with the useful information they seek, entices them to learn more and encourages them to join! The new site will continue to provide members with all of the materials, news and resources they are used to but additionally, it will present an exciting and upbeat face to the world. It will include more information about Pilot and about our organization’s history. It will prominently feature current news stories submitted by our clubs and will showcase our causes. In essence, it will show the world exactly WHY Pilot does what it does, and as such, will show the world WHO WE ARE. The updated website design is currently in the works and is scheduled to go live later this spring. We hope you are intrigued and excited by the all the new things Pilot International has in store, and we hope you will be able to join us this summer at international convention in New Orleans to find out more! Introducing the New Branding Standards, Official Mark and Logos for Pilot International and Anchor International

The new mark, a green Pilot Wheel sitting atop a blue Anchor (shown either with or without a blue wave), is not only the new official mark of Pilot International but Anchor International as well. In keeping with the findings of the 2012 Strategic Planning Survey and with the new Pilot International initiatives set to be introduced in the coming year, the new branding makes a conscious effort to emphasize the relationship between Pilot and Anchor Clubs. The new mark, logos and taglines formally unify the two Pilot “brands” - Pilot Clubs and Anchor Clubs. Shown together, the two groups strengthen each other.

Interested in being an Anchor Intern and getting your registration fee waived while learning how to put on an event for one thousand people? Apply to be a convention intern! Thanks to a generous donor, we are able to offer 4 internships. Complete and follow the instructions on the application to submit it. Interns will also be provided with a hotel room at the hotel on July 9th so that they can be available for a meeting/orientation July 10th and to begin working. The Anchor interns will share the room on the night of the 9th. Important New Anchor Club Policies The Pilot International Executive Committee approved a number of changes to the Anchor Club youth division at their January EC meeting. More in depth information will be provided at International Convention in New Orleans, so please be making plans to attend.

New Anchor Year

Effective this summer, the Anchor year will change to start August 1 and run through July 31st. The main reason for this change is to meet the need to run more concurrent to most school academic calendars, so Anchor clubs can be involved in service, activities and programming throughout the school year and in the summer as they would like. Dues will cover this full year. They will be collected in October of each year, and will be due to PIHQ by November 1. More about this opportunity to DO MORE will be discussed at International Convention in New Orleans. This change is a great chance to work with your sponsoring Pilot Clubs, if applicable, to hold fundraisers in the spring and summer, so your club is ready to go come the start of the fall school year!

Dues Change for Elementary and Middle School Clubs

Effective immediately, dues for newly chartering clubs are $10 per member. For existing clubs, the change goes into effect during the next regular dues cycle – now due November 1. The increase will go toward helping implement new Anchor programming.

New Chartering Requirements

The requirement to have a minimum of 15 members to charter a club has been changed to 10. In addition, clubs may be chartered without a sponsoring Pilot Club or member (however, it would be great if there is a nearby Pilot club or member that would like to be the sponsor!). We are excited about the growth opportunities these new changes will open up for youth wishing to serve in their neighborhoods and communities. Clubs still must have an adult advisor, but we do not require the adult to be a school representative, faculty member or employee.

We are communicating electronically now and introducing lots of information about exciting new things for Anchors. We don’t want you to miss anything! (Advisor: Jennifer Fontaine, Sponsor PC: TBD) In An Anchor’s Own Words...by Elizabeth Rockey, VP “This service activity is one we carry in our hearts all year long. Children in third world countries are not as fortunate as many of us in the United States. For many children, December 25th is just another day struggling to find food and clean water. Our Anchor Club sponsored Operation Christmas Child and got our church and school community involved. This organization asks for donations of shoe boxes filled with children’s toys, necessary hygiene utensils, school supplies and a Bible to send to the children in different countries. Participating in this service project helps to spread the Word of God to all the children who may not know about Jesus. Our Anchor Club advisor, Mrs. Fontaine, hoped we would donate at least 100 shoeboxes. Exceeding expectations, we engaged our entire community in donating 350 shoe boxes. Anchor Club was thrilled to hear that the whole school was as excited about serving others as we were. There were bar codes on the back of the shoe boxes that we can scan to tell us where they were shipped, so we can continue to pray and thank God that the children may be blessed through our simple gifts. Our Anchor Club is excited about loving locally and giving globally, and this is one way we have put such a saying into action.”

Walton High School Anchor Club, FL

(Advisor: Johnnie Kay, Sponsor PC: TBD) The Walton High School Anchor Club hosted its 2nd Annual “Give Kids the World” Ice Cream for Breakfast Fundraiser in January. Give Kids the World President Pamela Landwirth was present on Friday to speak to the Walton High School student body. Ms. Landwirth gave a brief presentation about the GKTW village and the importance of its supporters and volunteers. She also praised WHS Anchors’ efforts. While in the Kissimmee area for the Florida District Anchor Convention, WHS Anchor Club members will return to the village to volunteer on February 28th. Major Clayton of GKTW (shown with AC member Megan Matthews) was able to make a guest appearance at the Ice Cream for Breakfast Social, and the club raised $540 for the organization. Walton High School Anchor Club has been working with Give Kids the World for three years. Give Kids the World is a non-profit organization that provides a much-needed weeklong vacation for children facing life-threatening illnesses and their families. It is a partner with the Make-a-Wish Foundation, and many of the children’s wishes are fulfilled while in Orlando.

The Hempfield High School Anchor Club (Lancaster, PA)

The Hempfield High School Anchor Club held their annual Coffee House on Friday, January 18, 2013 in the high school gym. Students, parents and community members lounged on chairs and couches while sipping coffee and hot chocolate. Attendees enjoyed a variety of music performed by student bands. The Faculty Band even kicked off the evening’s event! National Art Honor Society student-created art was for sale, and items donated by The Pilot Club of Lancaster, Inc. were raffled off. The $500 proceeds were presented to the Milagro House, a local shelter for women and children.

Owen J. Roberts High School Anchor Club (Valley Forge, PA)

(Advisors: Kimberly Nagy and Anna DePaol, Sponsor PC: Valley Forge, PA) The Owen J. Roberts High School Anchor Club in Valley Forge, PA organized and hosted a Holiday tea for more than 200 senior citizens and retired teachers following the 7th Annual Holiday Concert program at their school. While the club served light refreshments, the freshman choir and string orchestra provided entertainment. A surprise visit by Santa and Mrs. Claus added to the festivities. Anchor Advisor of the Year Contest Winners By Louise Geib, Anchor Specialist

Sammye Hill, 1st Place Hokes Bluff High School Anchor Club Hokes Bluff, AL From the chartering of the Hokes Bluff High School Anchor Club in 2002, Anchor Advisor Sammye Hill has been involved. As a member of the sponsoring club, the Pilot Club of Gadsden, she credits the Gadsden Pilots for the success of the Anchor program. Likewise, the Anchors work well with the Pilots who continually inspire them with their friendship, leadership and service to others. Upon hearing the news that she had been chosen as this year’s Advisor of the Year, Sammye was stunned. “I know how hard other advisors work whether their clubs are big or small. I feel very grateful to have been chosen for this honor.” Sammye will join her fellow Pilots and Anchors at international convention in New Orleans this summer where she will be recognized for her accomplishments. Her attendance at convention will be paid for by Pilot International. “I’m excited to attend convention – this will be my third! I so enjoy meeting other members and hearing about their projects, fundraising efforts and ideas and mostly how they involve Anchor Clubs,” Sammye said. “I can’t begin to tell you what a great advisor and person Sammye is,’ said Suzanne Kendra, Pilot International Treasurer. “She takes the time to make sure Anchor is a wonderful experience for all of the members.” This year, Sammye noticed a significant number of her Anchors were also band members. With her encouragement, the kids worked together with the school’s band director

to form an Anchor Jazz Band. The band was very excited to receive an invitation from Alabama District Governor Beckie Martin to perform at the Alabama District Anchor Convention. Other significant achievements this year include two important service projects. First, the Anchor Club raised enough money to purchase two Wii Gaming Systems for a local day school for mentally challenged adults. Second, together with the Alabama Department of Children’s Rehabilitation Services, the Anchors researched toys for children with special needs. After purchasing two toys each for seventeen children, they were able to describe optimal therapeutic settings in which each “toy” could be helpful. Personally, Sammye has been involved with brain-related diseases and disorders in the community and the Alabama District. At school, she has developed a curriculum syllabus that substantiates the involvement of high school students in service clubs such as Anchor. This has also been shared with other service organizational leaders such as the Leo Club (Lions’ Club), the Jr. Civitans (Civitans), and the Key Club (Kiwanis). This is a cross-discipline instructional tool that includes English, history, math, and science. The Anchor Club president this year has used these “lessons” and “assignments” in his monthly newsletter. At every opportunity, Sammye speaks of the mission of Pilot International to groups and individuals promoting awareness of brain-related diseases and disorders. Sammye has been in education for more than 30 years. She also worked as a music therapist with Baptist Medical Centers in Birmingham, AL. She is the music director at the First United Methodist Church of Hokes Bluff and a professional storyteller with membership in the National Storytelling Network.

Vicki Lyle has taught Health Science at Walker High School for eight years and has served as advisor for the Anchor Club for four. She believes that being a part of Anchor Club has enriched her life. “The service that is accomplished by this group of young people is truly outstanding. Individuals throughout the community contact the club to help out with various projects, and they are always willing to help,” she said. Vicki is a member of the Pilot Club of Jasper and attributes much of the success of the Anchor Club and her achievement this year to their support. She has been married to her husband, Jeff, for 20 years, and the couple have two daughters. Hali is 16 and a member of the Anchor Club and new Alabama Anchor District President. Hannah is eight years old and is in 2nd grade. Vicki holds a BS in Nursing from the University of Alabama and worked as a registered nurse before becoming an educator.

In addition to serving as Anchor Club Advisor at Starkville Academy for the last three years, Barb is also a member of the Starkville Pilot Club and serves the Mississippi District as Anchor Coordinator. “The best thing about advising is seeing the growth of the Anchor members themselves. I am privileged to work with 50 intelligent, enthusiastic and giving Anchors,” said Barb. “No task is too large for this club. Our school mascot is the “Volunteer,” and our Anchor Club members truly embody the spirit of volunteerism.” Her profession is teaching where she also excels. This year she won her fourth Star Teacher award. Barb serves on the Starkville Area Arts Council Executive Board and serves on the board of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teaching sorority. She and her husband, Tom, have one son, Cody. Barb rides motorcycles and also enjoys travel and spending time outdoors.

ASK THE EXPERTS ... This year we asked our three top advisors to share their advice for being a successful advisor and how they are working to incorporate the new strategic initiatives for Anchor into their clubs. Here’s what they had to tell us. Q. Sammye, how can clubs grow their membership? A. “The club reputation in the school causes new growth each year. It becomes THE CLUB to join. Scholarship opportunities are especially enticing for the seniors. Pilot members attend the Graduate Awards Day ceremony to award the scholarships. They are substantial gifts. Most importantly, the extreme collaboration between the Pilots and the Anchors – whether at meetings, projects fundraisers or celebrations – that connection is of the utmost importance for maintaining and growing our club.” Q. Vicki, how will you be incorporating the new Anchor brand motto “Do More. Care More. Be More” into your club and activities?

A. “After receiving the news of the new brand we gave the members a challenge to live it. One way we’ll use it is to open our business meetings with this statement as a reminder to strive to be the best we can be while making a difference. “ Q. Barb, the first Anchor Leadership Summit will take place in New Orleans this summer alongside the Pilot International Convention! How are you encouraging you Anchors to attend? A. “I am extremely excited about the inaugural Anchor Leadership Summit taking place in New Orleans this summer. My Anchors and I plan to be there. We have a major fundraiser during the year to help defray the costs so our Anchors are able to attend. I have an Anchor applying for one of the intern positions for it this summer. Also, our local Pilot Club is very generous in giving an “Anchor Scholarship” to Pilot International Convention.”

Pilot Club of Decatur The Pilot Club of Decatur is dedicated to helping local Austin High School’s special needs program, guided by Mrs. Elizabeth English. At Austin High, students not only attend classes but they also learn life skills to carry with them upon graduation. On December 12, 2012 the club visited Mrs. English’s classroom and presented a BrainMinders puppet show. The students enjoyed the show so much that they asked to have their pictures made with the puppets! “It was wonderful to see how engaged and attentive all the students were during the show. These are life lessons they will remember,” stated Mrs. English.

Iowa City Pilot Club The Iowa City Pilot Club held its first BrainMinders presentation at the Iowa City Public Library in August, 2012. There were several Pilots presenting to an audience of at least nine or ten little ones. Although the children were shy at first, they warmed up to the puppets at the end! Two brand new puppets — the “Wise Old Owl” and “Martin Monkey” — were both donated by one of our long time members, Mary Julius. Club members also distributed crayons and coloring books which the children loved! The club had its second presentation in January, 2013 and hopes to schedule two or more at local libraries in the spring. It has been quite a few years since the club has had a BrainMinders presentation, and everyone is excited to “bring them back to life!”

Pilot Club of Martin On October 9, 2012 the Pilot Club of Martin met downtown at their community gazebo to host an Alzheimer’s Awareness Balloon Release Ceremony in honor of Pilot’s philanthropy, Brain Related Disorders. Pilot Club members and the community attended this event. After a presentation by Pilot Club leaders, everyone released purple balloons in honor and memory of Alzheimer’s. The club also joined forces with the Martin Optimist Club during the local Soybean Festival to host the Annual Bicycle Rodeo. Participants presented 28 helmets to attending children and also presented the BrainMinders skit.

On Saturday, January 19th, Pilot Club of Peoria participated in "Family Fest" (a family-focused community event with interactive fun for all ages). During Family Fest, the club gave away almost 1,000 bicycle helmets to children attending the event. The club also gave away 1,000 helmets last summer at a Peoria Chiefs baseball game. Pilot Club of Peoria was the recipient of a PI matching grant in 2012 which enabled them to purchase $10,000 worth of bicycle helmets.

ClubNews PC Andalusia: Pilots and Anchors present a Wii console, controllers, games and a new large-screen TV to residents of Andalusia Manor.

▶ Andalusia Pilots and Anchors promote mental fitness with Wii games. In December, residents of Andalusia Manor in Andalusia, Alabama, began bowling, golfing, and playing a variety of games as part of the “Wii Win” Program funded by the Pilot International Founders Fund and the Pilot Club of Andalusia. Pilots used grant funds to purchase a Wii console, games, and a large-screen television in order to provide a fun way for senior adults to exercise their bodies and brains. Andalusia High School Anchor Club members joined the Alabama Pilots in teaching residents how to use the Wii System. According to Carolyn Davis, Club PI Representative, Pilots plan to visit the nursing facility on an on-going basis to play games with the residents.

▶ On December 20th, The Pilot Club of Decatur, Alabama donated teddy bears for the two local children’s hospitals for children to use while they are in the hospital during the holidays. Hopefully, the cuddly teddy bears would help to make the kids’ stay a little easier! Decatur Pilots also staged a Fall Fashion Show at their November meeting. A local boutique, Cricket by the Creek, allowed a few of our members to model their clothes. The evening was a great success and all the ladies enjoyed showing off their beautiful outfits to the other members.

▶ The Pilot Club of Naples is making a

difference. Pilots Mary Ellen Koy, Bobbi Grimm, Paulette Dickerson, Rosemarie Kirk, Beverly Bertsche and Suzanne Lester completed the 40 hour Crisis Intervention Team training course with first responders from the Florida area Sheriff Departments, Deputies, members of the Police Departments, EMS, etc. With help from a matching grant from the PI Founders Fund, the Pilot Club of Naples was able to provide $8000 to NAMI, the Collier Co. Sherriff ’s Office and Naples Police Department to fund the CIT training classes which were held at the office of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. “Crisis Intervention Team training has proven to be an effective tool in reducing response to resistance incidents and arrests of the mentally ill in crisis, along with a reduction of injuries to law enforcement and consumers.”

▶ Community personalities and Anchor Club members contributed to make The Pilot Club of Panama City’s Third Annual Pancake Festival a success. It was held February 2 at Applebee’s in Panama City. Pancakes, sausage and coffee were served by the Anchor Club members as local TV personalities and well-known citizens poured coffee and sold 50/50 raffle tickets. There was face painting for the kids, baked goods, and lots of door prizes to make it a festive occasion. Proceeds will benefit three scholarships awarded to Anchor Club seniors with any additional funds benefiting the charities the club supports for brain-related disorders. The club also kicked off the holiday season with its annual “Luminaries of Love” event and the presentation of Christmas stockings they had made for the clients of Second Chance of Northwest Florida. ville hosted its 13th Annual “Tales of Our City” guided walking tours of historic Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida the weekend of April 6 and 7. Stories of the famous, not so famous and the infamous were told by costumed guides, storytellers and dramatists as visitors were guided through a section of the cemetery. Evergreen Cemetery is the largest cemetery in Northeast Florida, and there are many stories to be told about those that rest there. All of the money earned from these tours is used in some way to benefit various organizations that help those with brain-related disorders. To date, the club has raised over $100,000, a feat of which they are very proud.

The Charter Ceremony and the Installation of Officers was performed at Mangrove Mattie’s in Fort Pierce, FL. ▶ St. Augustine Pilots Continue Annual Love Light Project: In keeping with their 25 year tradition, the Pilot Club of St. Augustine placed more than 400 Love Lights in front of the historic Alcazar Building in downtown St. Augustine Dec. 9 during the Pilot Club of St. Augustine’s annual fundraiser. The lights, in honor or in memory of loved ones, are sold by the club for $3 each or two for $5, with the proceeds used for a variety of community service projects. The Alcazar Building is also home for the City of St. Augustine and Lightner Museum. The Love Lights add to the already glowing downtown St. Augustine during the yearly Night of Lights which continues from midNovember to Jan. 31 each season. The Night of Lights has been named by AAA as one of its 12 Favorite Places to Catch the Holiday Spirit in the USA and Canada, recognized by the American Bus Association as one of the nation’s top 100 events several times and was identified by National Geographic magazine as one of the top 10 places to see holiday lights. The Pilot Club adds to the season each year on one night only, the second Sunday in December.

PC St. Lucie County

▶ On Thursday November 15, 2012 several members of the Pilot Club of St. Lucie County participated in the 3rd Annual Kick Off of the Be A Santa to A Senior Program in St. Lucie County. The event was held at Butterfields Pharmacy where Governor Elect Barbara McKenzie is employed. The club sponsored 3 seniors whose names were provided to the program from the local Council of Aging/ Meals on Wheels programs. This is the second year that this club has participated in this program.

PC Tallahassee

▶ The Pilot Club of Tallahassee presented the Alzheimer’s Project, Inc. with a donation of $1,000 to support Project Lifesaver. A partnership between the Pilot Club of Tallahassee, Alzheimer’s Project and the Leon County Sheriff ’s Office provides the Project Lifesaver program in Leon County, Florida.

PC Titusville

▶ For many years, The Titusville Pilot Club and the Space Coast Pilot Club have joined hands to assist with the planning and implementation of the Joe’s Club Candlelight Memorial. Joe’s Club is an adult day care facility that assists residents with specific needs including dementia and related illnesses and other ailments which could prevent them from staying home alone safely. The Pilot Club of

Georgia District (East Central Region) PC CSRA

▶ The Pilot Club of CSRA has been volunteering at the Veterans Administration Spinal Cord Injury Unit for about two years. They discovered that many spinal cord injury patients at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta, Georgia enter through the emergency room and have a need for personal toiletries. They asked members of the Stevens Creek Community Church to help us provide these items. Together they collected and assembled 20 large boxes of toiletries from toothpaste to deodorant and nail clippers. Over fifty people were involved with the project. Supplies were sorted into plastic bags and given to the veterans at a Christmas party on December 20. The twenty veterans also received snuggies to enjoy for warmth while in the hospital.

(Northeast Region) PC Oconee Co.

▶ The Pilot Club of Oconee Co. held its 4th Annual Pilot Club Chase in January with 187 registered runners. The 5K run/ walk has been a very successful fundraiser for the past four years. The club presents handmade awards by local Oconee Co. artists to the winning race participants. This year’s awards were blown glass by Loretta Eby. PC Oconee Co.

(Northwest Region) PC Atlanta

▶ Peachtree Pilot Club of Atlanta member Marcelle Watkins’ long history of service was recognized recently as she won one of the Lifetime Volunteer Awards for 2012, presented by The Georgia Power Company. Marcelle has supported many organizations including the Annual Mayor’s Walk for Seniors, Junior Achievement, Red Cross Blood Drives, Peachtree Pilot Club, and Georgia Artists with Disabilities spanning approximately 35 years. Marcelle has been a Pilot member since 1978. She served as Club President in 1983-84. She currently serves as the Membership Chairperson. Marcelle is a great recruiter always exhibiting her love for Pilot. She is also one of the founding organizers of Georgia Artists with DisAbilities, Inc. (GAWD) formed in 1984.

(Southeast Region) PC Eastman

▶ The Pilot Club of Eastman has truly taken to little Jonah Barnett during the last year as they have helped to support and promote his fundraising efforts for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Jonah has been a patient at St. Jude’s since he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at the age of two. Celebrating his 11th birthday on January 12, Jonah has exceeded all expectations. He has also raised more than $20,000 for St. Jude’s through his “Jonah and the Whales” project. Pilot Club of Eastman president Nylan Hinson attended his birthday party, where at Jonah’s request, all guests were asked to bring items for the Operation Christmas Child boxes that are sent to children around the world each year. Pilot Club of Eastman is a strong supporter of St. Jude’s and is proud that to help Jonah with his fundraiser and his efforts to give back to St. Jude’s in appreciation of what they have given him.

Japan District PC Akita

▶ Recently, the Pilot Club of Akita (one of the clubs in the northeast districts of Japan, which suffered damage from the Great Tohoku Earthquake) celebrated its 20th Anniversary with Pilots from many sister clubs joining in the fun. The excursion after the event was broadcast nationwide by NHK-BS, and the club’s activities were publicized to all. Since the disaster, the club has continued its volunteer activities and service projects for earthquake and tsunami victims and their families.

PC Kagoshima

▶ Recently, Ms. Yoriko Miyahara, a charter member of the Kagoshima Pilot Club, formed in 1981, received the Order of the Sacred Treasure, bestowed upon her by the Emperor. She has been active for many years in Japan’s beauty industry. She built up the Prince Matsuyama Beauty Salon into Kagoshima’s leading beauty salon. She also opened her own beauty school, where she serves as director and works to educate the younger generation. Over the years she has cultivated countless talented beauticians. During her 32 years with Pilot, she has served as Japan District Coordinator several times and as District Treasurer, and has otherwise contributed to the growth of the Pilot Club.

▶ The Pilot Club of Manhattan held a celebration/Share Pilot meeting for their 50th Anniversary at their January 23, 2013 program meeting. The club was chartered on Saturday, February 26, 1963 by the Topeka Pilot Club. For roll call, each attendee shared a favorite memory of Pilot Club. Past President Shirley Hemme read a history of Pilot International and Pilot Club of Manhattan. Each division presented a report of current projects and goals. A display was created to highlight 50 Years of Pilot Club of Manhattan. Several former club members attended, including Past International Present Nancy Bowen.

PC Prairie, Wichita, KS

Kansas has participated in the Goodwill Industries Annual Festival of Trees for the past four years. Recently, the club won first prize for Best Tabletop Christmas Tree! The tree, along with a number of wreaths and centerpieces were donated and auctioned off with the proceeds going to support the efforts of Goodwill Industries.

▶ The 13-member Pilot Club of Springfield, Missouri was honored on December 12, 2012 during a Dedication Ceremony hosted by Alternative Opportunities in Springfield, Missouri. Sue Ellen Stouffer, wife of Missouri State Senator Bill Stouffer, was the guest speaker for the ceremony. She shared the challenges she faced when she was thrown from a horse and suffered

a traumatic brain injury. Over 70 guests and local business people attended the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Dedication of the new Brain Injury Resource Room which was made possible through a generous grant, and a lot of hard work, by the Springfield Pilot Club. The monies for this new resource room were made possible by a $1000 grant from the local Pilot Club and Pilot International. Providing books and other needs to Alternative Opportunities is an on-going project for the club.

Kentucky-Ohio-West Virginia District PC Zanesville, OH

▶ The Pilot Club of Zanesville was proud to begin their club year with two special members; Lucille LeCocq, now age 101, and Mary Jane Cain age 91. Both are active members, with several years of regular attendance. The club was chartered in 1941 and continues its community service work with a focus on helping those with brain related disabilities and diseases. Their main club fund raiser for many years has been a tulip and hyacinth sale held annually the week before Easter.

Midwest District PC Iowa City, IA

▶ The Pilot Club of Iowa City presented contributions totaling over $14,000 to 17 area organizations at their Thurs., December 13, 2012 meeting. The 76 member

club has been raising funds for the last 12 months with the major fundraiser being their Annual Breakfast, Bazaar and Bake Sale held in October. The agencies receiving funding include: Alzheimer’s Association East Central Iowa Chapter, Aspergers, Community Mental Health Center for Mid-Eastern Iowa, Coralville Public Library, Elder Services, Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois, Iowa City Parks & Recreation Foundation, Iowa City Public Library, Johnson County Sexual Assault Response Team, National Alliance on Mental Illness of Johnson County, North Liberty Community Library, Pathways Adult Day Health Center, Shelter House Community Shelter & Transition Services, Solon Public Library, Swisher Community Library, The Arc of Southeast Iowa and the Visiting Nurse Association of Johnson County.

PC Jacksonville, IL

▶ On November 30, 2012, the Pilot Club of Jacksonville received the 1st Annual Civilian Service Award from the Jacksonville Citizens Police Academy. Eleven members of the club and their guests attended the black tie affair which honored the club for their service to the community and its citizens. The Pilot Club of Jacksonville received a $5000 grant from Pilot International to purchase the Care Trak equipment and training for Morgan County and the Jacksonville area. The equipment includes bracelets which house locating devices and are to be worn by Alzheimer’s patients and children with Autism. The devices are monitored by the Jacksonville Police Department, South Jacksonville Police Department and the

ClubNews Morgan County Sherriff ’s Department. The club also joined forces with several other local service clubs to build a Play For All Park. This water park is designed to be enjoyed by all children but especially by those with disabilities.

▶ On January 26, 2013, the Pilot Club of Milwaukee presented club member Barbara Gregory with the Volunteer of the Year Award from North Suburban Special Olympics. The award was presented by fellow Pilot Linda Brothen, Agency CoManager, North Suburban Special Olympics (NSSO). (NSSO) Pilot Club members also spread cheer at Children’s Hospital On December 12, 2012, Pilot Club of Milwaukee members delivered 32 fleece blankets they had made to the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, the largest and most advanced EMU in the region. It was a reenactment of what the Pilot members did last year, because they had been told that last year’s delivery made a lot of children happy. Children being cared for in this unit often spend weeks in the hospital being observed. The Pilots felt it is difficult enough to be away from home any time of the year, but at holiday time, it could be unbearable. A little gift of cuddly warmth might make the hospital stay a bit more comfortable.

PC Omaha, NE

▶ The Pilot Club of Omaha has had a wonderful working relationship with Madonna School. Madonna is a private faith

based school exclusively for students with special needs. There are approximately 55 students ranging in age from 6-21. The Pilots have presented BrainMinders several times to a population that loves the show and message. The club includes the students in many of their service projects The club has helped the Madonna school’s special education teacher who teaches simple sewing and quilting to students as a life skill. Because the school operates about 80% on donations, funding for special programs, like sewing, is ALL donations. Many people give fabric and thread, however, the Pilot Club of Omaha donates a sewing machine and a small box full of equipment to operate it. The teacher trains students to sew on the machine, and if there is a student who shows good progress, that student gets to take the machine home to continue to use his/her skills. This involvement in sewing has led to some wonderful service opportunities for the students including the chance for

them to sew and donate fleece dog mats for a dog rescue organization and quilts for Hurricane Sandy victims. The decision to help fund the sewing program has been especially gratifying for the club and the school, and they hope it can continue for years to come.

PC Peoria, IL

▶ On Saturday, January 19th, Pilot Club of Peoria participated in “Family Fest” (a family-focused community event with interactive fun for all ages). During Family Fest, the club gave away almost 1,000 bicycle helmets to children attending the event. Our club also gave away 1,000 helmets last summer at a Peoria Chiefs baseball game. Pilot Club of Peoria was the recipient of a PI matching grant in 2012 which enabled the club to purchase $10,000 worth of bicycle helmets.

▶ Recently, the Pilot Club of Gastonia was featured in the Gasdon Gazette in an article by Will McDonald, Community Editor. The article focused on the club’s various service projects including helping the Gazette’s Empty Stocking Fund for the Salvation Army to which the club made a $185 donation. The article also highlighted the club’s commitment to Project Lifesaver, which is underwritten locally by the club along with the help of other organizations and individuals, and the club’s participation in the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease.

Forge recently presented a check for $2000 to Children’s Hemophegia Stroke Association (CHASA) as part if its “Braces For Babes” project to provide braces for pediatric stoke survivors. These children usually have physical, behavioral, cognitive and/or speech deficits which require long term rehabilitaion and special equuipment. As the child grows there is a need for larger braces, larger strollers, and other special equipment to accomodate the child’s needs. Working with Amber Schmucker of Pottstown, whose son Zaiden is a stoke survivor, the club hopes to bring about a community awareness that “Kids Have Strokes Too.” The club also recently hosted their annual holiday party for the residents of The Golden Age

Manor, a low income residence for the elderly and disabled, in Royersford, PA. 25 residents joined Pilots, Anchors and Navigators in playing several games and later enjoyed light refreshments.

South Carolina District PC Bennettsville

▶ The Pilot Club of Bennettsville, SC, was selected to serve Grand Marshal of the Bennettsville Christmas parade on Dec. 11th. Members enjoyed riding through town in horse drawn carriages and spreading Christmas Cheer to all in attendance.

Southwestern District PC Belen, NM

▶ The Pilot Club of Belen has been hard at work spreading Pilot cheer and serving the needs in their hometown. Every Christmas, the club takes a family or two shopping at Walmart so the kids can buy presents for their family. This past Christmas, they discovered a need to provide socks and shoes for 13+ students at LaMerced Elmentary School who were coming to school without any. They also presented a check to the local Belen High School Staters Program. This is an excellent program for both girls and boys to go to the NM State program and learn life skills. The club has donated to this and the Mother Steery Scholarship program for many years.

▶ Dresden Pilot Club held its annual candle lighting service on Sunday, December 2nd from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Candles were lit around the courthouse square in Dresden, Tennessee. Luminaries were dedicated in honor or memory of someone, in recognition of birthdays, anniversaries, and a few were to wish loved ones Merry Christmas. It was a wonderful way to start the holiday season.

PC Hohenwald

▶ Kathryn Kozlinski, sponsored by the Pilot Club of Hohenwald, has delivered two presentations in recent months at the Senior Citizens Center in Hohenwald. One titled “How the Brain Works” and the other recent, timely one “Ten Ways to Relieve Caregiver Stress During the Holidays.” Kathryn is a retired nurse who specialized in the care of patients with dementia.

Texas District PC Dallas

▶ The Pilot Club of Dallas, chartered in 1938, celebrated 75 years of friendship and service to the Dallas/Fort Worth Community on March 9th at Lakewood Country Club with a luncheon. There were 51 guests in attendance. Speakers included Pilot International President, Winnie Brewer; Past Pilot International President, Judy Breaud and keynote speaker award-

winning radio host, Jody Dean. Judy Breaud related the rich history of Pilot Club of Dallas. This included purchase of refrigerated units for the first blood bank in Dallas; Pilot School for Deaf Children which was the key to founding Callier Center for Communications Disorders; and Dallas Pilot Home, a life skills program for developmentally challenged women that served the community for 23 years.

PC Lufkin

▶ Each year, the Pilot Club of Lufkin, Texas, sets up a Christmas Store for the clients at the Salvation Army Adult Day Center, so the clients can give Christmas gifts to their caregivers. The director of the Day Center gives the club a list of caregivers and their family members, and the Pilot Club members donate all the gifts, which they collect during the year. The day of the event, the Pilots set up tables of unwrapped gifts, separating the men’s, ladies’, and children’s gifts, for the clients to peruse. Also, tables are set up with giftwrapping supplies to wrap the gifts the clients choose. The wrapping is completed by the members of the Lufkin High School Anchor Club.

PC Odessa

▶ The Pilot Club of Odessa participated in the Hard Hats for Little Heads event and presented the BrainMinders program for the fourth year in a row at the City of Odessa Fall Festival on October 13, 2012. The club had a prime location at McKinney Park, and the children were

lined up to get fitted for their free helmet. In total, the club gave away 360 helmets and backpacks as well as book marks and BrainMinders coloring books. A grant from Pilot International was instrumental in being able to purchase helmets for this event as well as for local BrainMinders presentations in Odessa and surrounding communities.

▶ At their January 2013 club meeting, Pilot Club of West Chambers County welcomed Baytown AMC (Adult Mentally Challenged) Art League teacher Bobby Sutphin and the Jordan family, Bobby, Laura and Tyler, and presented a check for $200 for the AMC Art League Camp.

Virginia District

The Virginia District of Pilot International has partnered with Service Dogs of Virginia for the Virginia District Service Dog Project. The purpose of the project is to educate the public about brain-related disorders through promotional materials and publicity with Service Dogs of Virginia. The initiative also provides Virginia Pilots with an opportunity to impact the life of the person who receives a Service Dog. The partnership also provides more public visibility for Pilot as Service Dogs are named “Pilot” and wear service vests bearing the Pilot Wheel. “Virginia District, Pilot International” is also listed as a formal partner and supporter on the Service Dogs of Virginia’s website.

PC Luncheon Danville

▶ The Luncheon Pilot Club of Danville recently presented its main fundraiser: People, Pets & Pilot An Event to Help Those with Brain Related Issues in Our Community. Participants register to have their picture taken with their pet by El Cid Photography. Each participant is given an 11x14 copy of their picture to keep, and the Luncheon Pilot Club of Danville displays all the pictures, soliciting cash votes from the community for the Best Picture. The winner is determined by the picture that raises the most amount of “cash votes,” and the winner gets a fabulous prize! All entries received a prize just for participating.

pring time is exciting for many reasons but for many of us, especially the Anchors, it is SUPER EXCITING because it is District Anchor Convention Time!! I would like to thank all of the District Anchor Coordinators, DAC Members, Anchor Advisors/Sponsors and Anchor Officers for all the hard work you put into the planning of your District’s Convention – what dedication you all have for our Anchors. The District Anchor Conventions are a great way for us as Pilots to spend valuable time with our Anchors and be “in their world” for a short time. I know there are many dedicated “Anchor Loving Pilots” that attend their District Anchor Convention every year, but I would like to encourage ALL Pilots to consider attending your District’s Anchor Convention in the future, especially if you didn’t make it this year. What a great way to see what Anchor is all about and to be energized by an outstanding group of young adults. After all, ANCHORS ARE THE FUTURE OF PILOT! Shouldn’t we spend time with them and support them in all that they are doing? Some Pilots may not be physically able to attend Anchor Conventions or be hands on active with the actual clubs, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still support the Anchors. Have you ever thought about donating items they are collecting or donating money to their Projects? Have you ever attended an Anchor Sponsored Fundraiser? How about covering the Convention registration cost for an Anchor or two to attend their Conventions? For those Pilot Clubs that sponsor an Anchor Club, have you ever considered putting money in your budget to help your Anchors with Convention expenses? How about co-sponsoring a fundraiser like a Spaghetti Dinner to help your Anchors raise money for their convention expenses or club projects. There are many ways that we as Pilots can help and if you aren’t sure how to help, then simply ask the Anchors and I promise, they will tell you! I am looking forward to hearing about the exciting Convention Weekends and seeing all the pictures that will be posted on Facebook. Make sure you go to the “Anchor Clubs International” Facebook page and let us “know and see” how your convention turned out. undraisers come in many sizes. Clubs may have fundraisers that bring in smaller dollars and take limited effort. Clubs can have big fundraisers that are very profitable but involve much time and work. Of course, there’s everything in between. Once a club has decided on its fundraiser(s), it goes through the planning and organizing phase that we’ve discussed in previous articles. This all leads up to the big event – your fundraiser. It doesn’t matter if you are selling wrapping paper from a catalog or holding an all-day event. There are some things to keep in mind when actually conducting your fundraiser. All club members should know what is going on and what is expected of them. Remember: your members' time should not be wasted. It may be best to schedule people to come in at different times based on what work needs to be done. You don’t want people just sitting around with nothing to do and questioning why they are there. This idea also works if your fundraiser requires a drop-off of orders. Have a “drop-off and go” location so members can do just that. Club members should know who to ask if there are questions and who has the authority to make a decision. There are quite a few people in our clubs who are in leadership roles. However, they are not all taking lead roles in your fundraiser. The Fundraising Coordinator in the club seems to be the logical person to assume is in charge. It may be that on a particular fundraiser that they gave the lead role to another person who has more experience or knowledge about that fundraiser. In this example, this person may be the one to answer questions, but the coordinator maintains the role of final decision maker when it comes to authorizing spending. Remember to encourage and to validate. It is still important to encourage each other, say thank you, and validate the work of others. It doesn’t have to be a big showy thing. Simple comments do mean something. Think of how you feel when someone tells you that you’ve done a good job. Pass that feeling along! Whether you hold a low-key fundraiser or a big blow out event, you are working to move forward your Pilot club as you fund projects and activities. Best wishes for successful fundraisers!

oo-hoo! Spring will be here soon, bringing warmer weather and those April showers and May flowers that follow!! Also, many of us have already made plans to attend Anchor and District conventions within the next few weeks. We are working hard on our club projects, fundraisers, and growing membership. Does this sound like a familiar Pilot experience for you? My hope is, yes it does! If it doesn’t, perhaps some ideas shared in this article focused on “Character and Traits in Leadership” will spark enthusiasm to grow your club’s leadership, bringing new energy and finding ways to make our meetings more fulfilling. In his book, “On Becoming a Leader,” Dr. Warren Bennis says, “Managers are people who do things right, while leaders are people who do the right thing.” There is much truth in this quote. Leaders do not command excellence, they build excellence. To reach excellence, it is important to first be a leader of good character. A person with strong character shows drive, energy, determination, self-discipline, willpower and nerve. Our clubs need leaders with strong and good characteristics, those who will guide them to the future and show that they can be trusted. This behavior wins trust, loyalty, and ensures continued vitality within the club. How can we do this? We build trust by displaying a good sense of character composed of beliefs, values, skills and traits. First, beliefs are what we hold dear and are rooted deeply within us. The convictions we hold true regarding community service and meeting the needs of those with brain-related disorders are at the top of our list. Values are attitudes about the worth of people, concepts or things. Our Pilot International motto of “Friendship and Service” echoes the importance of these values as we nurture and build Pilot friendships, both old and new, and make a difference in our communities through serving others. Skills are the knowledge and abilities that a person gains throughout life. Our clubs are filled with a diversity of skillful members. Learning their skill sets and tapping into the talents of each member is one of the great qualities of a good leader. Here are a few traits crucial for a leader: Honesty. Competence. Forward-Thinker. Inspiring. Intelligent. Fair-Minded. Broad-Minded. Courageous. Straightforward. Imaginative. Be innovative! Excellence starts with leaders of good and strong character. Lead on!

reat news! As you read this article, eleven new clubs are being developed with one already chartered in KS-MO this club year! I must congratulate the District Governors and the Executive Committee (our ECRs) of Pilot International for being so positive and encouraging to our districts. My previous articles have focused on the two beginning steps in building a new club and growing an existing club. Many Pilots in Georgia have heard me do a presentation on “Climate Setting” which begins with securing a location for the Gathering. The perception and atmosphere of a site for a potential Pilot sets the tone on how comfortable the volunteer will feel along with the local “Sparks.” Helping the visitor to feel good, special and accepted in a new group is a part of “Climate Setting”, so make sure to choose your location wisely. The “Personality Climate” provided by Pilots is also important. A warm and welcoming attitude will bring the new volunteers back to the next Gathering. Positive communication skills — being a good listener and delivering a positive message to the group — also creates a warm and accepting climate. Engage the new volunteer in positive conversations, and sit with a new volunteer….remember to call and invite them back to the next Gathering! Another major part of “Climate Setting” for maintaining a current Pilot Club and the building of a new club is the is the club's literature. PIHQ is working diligently to provide our clubs with updated new resources, but individual clubs' materials should promote the chosen meeting place and include the meeting time (Monday, Tuesday or Thursday nights are usually the best unless it is sometime during a weekend). Prospective members will receive the special invitation to complete the membership form before they leave. The other literature and some extra materials should go with them to share with others. The literature should include contact names/addresses/e-mail addresses/phone numbers for use in contacting the co-sponsors and the two local “Sparks!” During the final “Climate Setting” moments, encourage the Volunteers to leave committed to bringing someone with them to the next Gathering, Be sure that the new Volunteers leave with happy smiling faces because they were received by the best welcoming group ever. “Climate Setting” is a valuable tool for Pilot International!

hile I was sitting in a meeting recently, a colleague said something that just perplexed me. He said, “Faith, I’ve decided that I am going to become an Inverse Paranoid.” I sort of nodded and said, “Ok, can you explain this one?” My friend proceeded to tell me the following story and later sent me the quote that lead to his decision. “W. Clement Stone was once described as an inverse paranoid. Instead of believing the world was plotting to do him harm, he chose to believe the world was plotting to do him good. Instead of seeing every difficult or challenging event as a negative, he saw it for what it could be — something that was meant to enrich him, empower him, or advance

his causes. What an incredibly positive belief! Imagine how much easier it would be to succeed in life if you were constantly expecting the world to support you and bring you opportunity. Successful people do just that.” ~ Jack Canfield from The Success Principles As Pilots, how do we really see our clubs, our districts and Pilot International as a whole? This same question can be directed to our projects, both old and new. Do we see them always as a way to advance our Pilot mission? Is it possible to change our perception of what we, personally believe that a project should look like, or what a club should look like to that of how our projects do indeed enrich our clubs and our districts? If so, then the outcome will definitely be one of positivity and success, helping to create an enriching culture for Pilot. As Pilot International works to strengthen its partners, and in essence its projects, the real question is, “How are we supportive?” Maybe, if our viewpoints change to that of the Inverse Paranoid philosophy, then true success for clubs, districts and Pilot International will follow.

P

ilot Club of Bishopville member Christine Muldrow Shirley was honored Sunday, January 6th, with a reception at the Lee County Opera House in Bishopville, SC. Mrs. Shirley was the Lee County Arts Council’s ‘Artist of the Month’ and was honored with a reception and a month-long extension of her artwork exhibit in the main lobby of the Opera House. Mrs. Shirley, who was 83 years old when she took her first art class in watercolor at the Opera House, enjoys painting portraits of family members, county landmarks, flowers and scenes from nature. Just three years after taking her first art lessons in 2008, she won second place at the Sumter County Fair for her painting of a Lee County hayfield. An exceptional member of the Pilot community, Mrs. Shirley served as Governor of the South Carolina District of Pilot International in 1972-73 and has 51 years perfect attendance in the Pilot Club of Bishopville. She has served as president of her local club three times and was awarded the Mildred Henry Davenport Award in 1993. She is still active in the club and still enjoys attending District Conventions, Fall Councils, and Leadership Workshops and hopes to attend the International Convention this summer in New Orleans. She has attended twelve international conventions and remembers that the first convention she attended was in New Orleans. She is a strong promoter of the BrainMinder’s program and has participated in the BrainMinder presentations in every primary school in the county. At age 95, she is among the oldest active members of our organization.

In addition to the Pilot Club, she belongs to the Book Club, the Garden Club, the Eastern Star, and has been a member of the DAR for 64 years. She is active in the Bishopville Presbyterian Church and served as vice-president of the Women of the Church of Harmony Presbytery. She also still drives a car. Her aerobics instructor, Donna Smith, was quoted in the newspaper article as saying, “When I grow up, I want to be just like her.” Another guest at the reception, Betty Heriot, said, “She is the epitome of a Southern Lady.” Several people attending the reception remarked that she was their hero.
