President'sMessage Greetings, Pilots! As Mahatma Ghandi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Pilots and Anchors alike serve others unselfishly, and in return find their lives enriched in countless ways as we strive to DO MORE, CARE MORE, and BE MORE. What a busy but exciting spring with the accomplishment of many successful District Anchor Conventions and the plans for our Pilot District Conventions coming to fruition. Many thanks to the district teams for their diligent work. Congratulations to the Mississippi District for conducting their convention in a successful one-day format! Conventions provide great information, training, and fellowship as well as motivation to DO MORE in our communities. Many of you have embraced the focus on Caring for Families in Times of Need in amazing ways and you will hear more about this at convention in Chicago. Also, Anchors and Navigators will be making Care Goodie Bags and Comfort Cards for families whose loved ones are hospitalized in Chicago. It is amazing what opportunities arise for Pilots and Anchors to show that we CARE MORE. Many Clubs are highlighted in this edition of the Pilot Log for their inspiring stories of growth. You are encouraged to read the articles to learn how your Club can BE MORE of a recruiter for new members. We hope the new members are enjoying their New Member Guides they receive directly from Pilot International Headquarters, and we encourage you to take advantage of the wealth of new club building and membership recruitment materials now available on the Pilot International Website. Also, be sure to nominate a Pilot, Anchor, or Pilot Club for award recognition at this year's international convention. Have you attended international convention before? If so, please consider being a Mentor for a First Time Attendee at convention so that you can help make their first convention a great experience! You can find out more about all of these exciting opportunities and resources in this edition of the Pilot Log. In closing, I want to personally invite each and every one of you to join me and your fellow Pilots and Anchors at the 2014 Pilot International Annual Convention & Leadership Conference in Chicago. Come and be filled with the spirit of Pilot Friendship! Come and be inspired by the spirit of Pilot Service and carry that flame back to your club and to your community. You can find out all about what lies ahead at this year's event in this issue of the Pilot Log and online. Register today using the registration form available in this issue (and online) so you can join us in “Celebrating the Gift of Pilot” at the Pilot International Annual Convention & Leadership Conference in Chicago July 2-6, 2014! It won't be the same without you!

PilotPoints Introducing Pilot’s New Club and Individual Awards! “…We shall radiate that which is unselfish, beautiful, and true.” Pilots and Anchors exemplify these words found in our Pilot Code of Ethics on a daily basis as we serve others in our global communities. It is the nature of Pilots to do good for others and not seek accolades for doing so. However, Pilot International, in an effort to inspire others and provide some of the best practices, has chosen to recognize some of our unsung heroes. We want you to be a part of making this happen by nominating individuals and clubs for the various awards we have put in place. To learn more about these exciting new awards, please visit the Pilot International Website at the following link: http://www.pilotinternational.org/imapilot/pilotinternationalawards.

Calling ALL PILOT CLUBS AND DISTRICTS Pilot International encourages you to submit professional quality, “webworthy” photography for use on the Pilot International website and in various Pilot International media campaigns. Photographs should be sent in jpg format, 300 dpi at 2550x3300 pixels (preferably), to Alison Coons, Director of Communications, at alison@pilothq.org. Please note that submitted photographs may be chosen for use in a variety of publications and without advance notice. Clubs and Districts are encouraged to employ the Pilot International Photo Release Form found on the Pilot International website at all events and projects where photos are taken.

Calling All Clubs!

PilotPoints A Tale of a Special Pilot Friendship... Several years ago, when the Pilot Club of Akron, OH, hosted the District Convention, a grade school friend and I renewed friendships. I'm getting ahead of myself: it all started when I was co-chair for a grade school reunion. We sent out invitations for this event. About the same time, my childhood friend (MaryJo Cusack) received the announcement of the District Convention. She wondered if the "Mary Mueller" mentioned in the Pilot invite was the same as the one sending the invite for the class reunion which she was unable to attend.

As Pilots, we strive to Do More. Care More and Be More every day. No matter whether it was five months or fifty years ago, each Pilot remembers who invited them to their first Club meeting. Each and every Pilot from all walks of life entered that room with different talents, different interests and different experiences, but each remembers the joy and friendship they felt at that first gathering. They remember the exhilaration that came with their first opportunity to serve, and they remember just WHY they joined Pilot. Each member’s unique journey through the months and years that followed are the sparkling threads that knit their personal Pilot tale. Every Pilot has a story. We want to hear yours, and we want to share it. Because your story is part of Pilot’s story. Because YOU are a PILOT. Pilot International invites you to be a part of the I AM A PILOT campaign. New marketing and new membership materials are being designed to introduce the world to Pilot by introducing our amazing members. Pilot is all about its people. Pilot International is honored that you are a part of our organization, and want to share you with the world! Who are you? YOU ARE A PILOT. We want to hear your story, and we want to share it. If you have an inspiring Pilot tale, please visit the I AM A PILOT page on the Pilot International Website, or email Alison Coons, Director of Communications and Editor of the Pilot Log, at alison@pilothq.org. If you do not have access to the Internet or email, please mail your story to Alison Coons at Pilot International Headquarters, 102 Preston Court, Macon, GA 31210 or send via fax to (478) 477-6978. We want to hear from you! pilotinternational.org

Following grade school, we went to different high schools. She went on to law school, moved to Columbus and we lost touch. The afternoon of the District Convention I was seated at the convention registration table when MaryJo arrived to register at the hotel. We recognized each other's voices, did a "180" and had the best reunion ever! The Pilot Club of Akron provided the entertainment. We dressed the parts and lip-synched many songs. I was selected to be Kate Smith and "sang" God Bless America. I had on a wig ... MaryJo was in the front row. She came to me afterwards and wondered if I had to pull out at the last minute. She didn't even recognize me. When she was elected president of the Pilot Club of Columbus, she asked if I would install her. I was very honored to do so. When my dear childhood friend - my dear Pilot friend - MaryJo passed away, her Pilot items were given to Pilot Club of Columbus. Members from the club brought them to Akron when the Akron club again hosted the convention. I bid and won special Pilot earrings that I believe she designed and had made. I am forever grateful for my wonderful friend and for cherish the memories we made together as children, and as Pilots. - Mary Mueller, Pilot Club of Akron SPRING 2014

PilotPoints Electronic Communications From Pilot International are Like Little Gifts in Your Inbox... Are You OPENING YOURS? According to the most recent statistics provided by Constant Contact...maybe not? Pilot International works very hard to provide our membership with informative and timely communications including the Pilot International News, The Anchor Newsletter and numerous electronic communications designed to keep you up to speed with all of the exciting things happening with Pilot like general announcements or partnership opportunities. But, according to the most recent data provided by Constant Contact, of the 8535 members listed in our email database, only 1600 are actually opening your messages from Pilot International, and of those 1600, only about 120 are reading the messages and clicking on the links to additional information. This action is vital to receive items such as the Pilot International News which comes to you via a clickable link from Constant Contact. Don't let these good gifts go to waste! As a Pilot, it is your responsibility to remain engaged and informed, and Pilot International Headquarters strives to provide continual communication to you, our valued members. But, in order to "be in the know," you have to take that quick, easy step and open the message. Do you think you should be receiving our communications but you haven't seen one in your inbox? In order to ensure that you continue to receive our communications in a timely fashion, please make sure that your email client is set to recognize and receive messages from "pilot@pilothq.org" and "communication@pilothq.org." We have had numerous reports from members who had not received any of the communications only to discover that their email platform was rejecting the incoming messages entirely. Pilot International sends out information via Constant Contact at least once a month, and usually more often than that. If you believe that you are not receiving our information, please check to make sure that your email recognizes our email addresses as "safe." There's such great stuff happening with Pilot these days, we wouldn't want you to miss a THING!

NURTURING TODAY'S PILOT SPIRIT Tales of Exceptional Club Growth In 2012 Pilot International asked you, our membership, to envision the ideal Pilot International. We asked you to tell us about you, about your club and about your local needs. We asked you to define the Pilot you want to be as we embark on our second century of service. The responses were as varied as the unique communities in which you serve. Each Pilot Club fills a niche within their world that only that club can meet. Knowing that our Pilot spirit is filled by the desire to meet these unique needs also unites us in the knowledge that being able to serve TODAY is not enough. We must commit ourselves to spreading the spirit of service to ensure that Pilot International not only survives but thrives. As Pilots, our hands are never idle. There is always good work to be done, and we are eager to assist. But there is also work to be done at home. Growing our numbers is imperative to finding new Pilots with hands able to help today - and tomorrow.

pilotinternational.org

Increasing membership is no easy task. Every club has questions, but there are many answers. This year has been a banner year for growth in several of our clubs. Their differing approaches to seeking, gaining and retaining new members proves that there is a way for EVERY club to survive, and for EVERY club to thrive. These clubs have found a way to harness today's spirit of service. Fundamentally, clubs must answer the needs of their communities in order to determine not only how best to serve but also how to encourage others to serve alongside us.

SPRING 2014

The clubs profiled in this story have found a way to do just that. Let their spirit and their stories inspire you! Pilot Club of Odessa, TX 85 Members Strong By tackling the task head on and actively recruiting new members, the Pilot Club of Odessa, TX welcomed 18 new members at a single meeting last fall. With the encouragement and support of strong leadership including PI President Elect Sherry Johnson and current TX District Governor Carla Bryant, the Pilot Club of Odessa has risen from a club of once 17 members on the brink of disbanding to a thriving club now almost 100 strong. When asked about the club's success, President Elect Sherry said, "When I was Lt. Governor many years ago I visited the club as their official visitor, and they were down to 17 members. The first thing they asked me when I arrived for their meeting was should they consider disbanding, and after the meeting all of them were committed to Pilot International and the mission....deciding to hang in there." President Elect Sherry went on to say, "Through the years I've seen so many fabulous things from this club, and now they can no longer meet anywhere other than the hospital lecture hall because it's hard to fit 78 members into a small space! I am just so proud of them and would like to use their example to share with others to encourage them to push on!" Linda Terrell of the Pilot Club of Odessa said, "...Having the Texas District Governor and the Texas District Secretary in our club is a great honor, and they both were [there]. But having the President Elect of Pilot International was just the icing on the cake. I hope many of you had an opportunity to meet Sherry Johnson after our meeting. She is a good friend to our club and a great asset to PI. We are excited that she will be representing Texas as the next President of Pilot International. It’s a great day to be a Pilot in Odessa, Texas!"

the table." Members were encouraged to say out loud what they liked and what they wanted to get rid of or try differently.

According to Bobbi Hudson, 2006-2007 Past International President and member of the Pilot Club of Danville, a year ago, members thought their club was doomed. But now, by embracing an alternate meeting style, members are shouting, "Woohoo!"

"We added, subtracted to all areas, events, fundraisers and attraction of new members. In essence our club members wanted to not only step outside the box, they wanted to smash the old one and build a brand new model," Bobbi said.

The Pilot Club of Danville embraced its own "ABCs." By focusing on issues stemming from, "Apathy," by "Broadening Their Horizons" and eventually "Creating Alternatives," this club is thriving in a way that works for all its members.

The club decided to reach out to former Members at Large, to embrace them in the spirit of Pilot Friendship, and that spirit was wholeheartedly returned. By meeting online through Skype and regularly communicating via email, members of the club keep in touch and stay active just as traditional members would.

According to Bobbi, "Members wanted excitement and enthusiasm in their club again. They were tired of negativity and lack of member participation in meetings, holding of club offices and fundraisers. BUT, our club members were adamant about one thing: we would NOT disband without a big Virginia try!" In order to determine how to move forward, the club literally sat around a large table and "laid the cards (both good and bad) on

Pilot Club of Honolulu 22 Members Strong The Pilot Club of Honolulu's success can be attributed directly to the spirit of Pilot Friendship and new ideas shared at international convention. COED Governor Merrillly Burns said, "The Honolulu Club has come back from 8 members last year to 20 this year. The process started after the President Elect attended convention. She had heard the comment, 'You really don't understand the whole picture until you attend convention.' She went prepared to attend as many workshops she possibly could to learn more. The club has for years held a fundraiser to pay all the expenses of the President Elect and any left over money goes to pay the registration fee of others attending. BJ came back ready to go." Governor Merrily went on to say, "The Club still faces challenges, but...those are met with a "we can find a solution" approach. This is a good example how recycling Presidents -- recycles sameness. New blood brings new approaches, or bringing back what works--without the 'we used to do that' comment."

Pilot Club of Pretoria, South Africa 5 Members Strong - With Plans to Expand In their first few months as Pilots (the PC of Pretoria and their De Goode Hoop Anchor Club chartered on November 6, 2013 as the first Pilot International clubs in the nation of South Africa), the Pilot Club of Pretoria has been hard at work, already anticipating and planning for growth. They are tackling the task of expansion by keeping active and visible in their community. Within the next few months, the clubs (Pilot & Anchor) plan to: • Hold a raffle to win a rooibok • Host a Cheese & Wine evening with a sommelier • Hold a Talent Evening, also involving the DeGoedeHoop Anchors • Have a fashion show with Dinner (with Anchor involvement) In addition to their social events, the club is involved in the following outreach projects: • Irene Homes for mentally disabled - outreach to help with needs • Dr Hanlie Meyer Counselling Services for the community - work together & assist with funds • Joy in the Box Project - Christine Smit - Gift Boxes for children in need Club members are also in the process of looking at options to attend the Pilot International Convention in Chicago in July 2014. Undoubtedly, each of these clubs is very different. Some are modern. Some are traditional, and they are miles apart. They are different, but they are all growing. And they are actively seeking to continue to grow, in an era where growth is not easy. Why are they succeeding? How can their success inspire yours? Does your club have a success story to share? Tell us! Email your club's success to communication@pilothq.org.

You never know what good works YOUR good works might inspire!

Special Olympics is Special to Pilot! Pilot Club of Quitman, TX

On March 21, 2014, Quitman Pilot Club hosted the eleventh annual Special Olympics Track Meet. We began the day with opening ceremonies, a welcome by Quitman’s Mayor and the MC. We had a parade of athletes, led by the USA and Texas flags and our Pilot clowns, to the music “We Are the Champions." Then the competition began with track, softball and tennis ball throw, javelin, shot put, high jump and long jump. We presented medals at the end of each individual heat. We furnished a lunch of hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, water and drinks to all in attendance. We had wonderful weather! It did get a little wild at times, but it always does with so many people working together. We had approximately 163 athletes, 165 Coaches & Assistants and 140 volunteers; about 468 people in all. Wow!! We had athletes ranging in age from 8 years old to 75 years old. Our volunteers included student nurses from the Dallas area, college students from Oklahoma State and Arkansas University, Brookshire’s Grocery in Tyler and Quitman, the Quitman Fire Dept., the Police Dept., East Texas Medical Center, Quitman ISD Assistant Superintendent, Quitman ISD the Quitman Chamber of Commerce, several Quitman businesses and last but not least the Quitman Anchor Club, and Anchors from the Sabine Anchor Club volunteered this year. We simply could not do the Special Olympics Meet without our Anchors! It is Pilots, coaches, volunteers and athletes all working together - helping one another - that really made this meet a true success! We are so blessed to be able to give a special group of kids a wonderful day. Their smiles, hugs, high-fives and exuberance make it all worthwhile. There is no better way to put your life in perspective than to spend time with these amazing, “special” athletes, their parents, coaches and assistants. They are truly angels on earth. We benefit more from them than they do from us. At the end of the day on Friday, we were pretty tired but full of thankfulness and joy for having been with these kids and with each other.

Pilot Club of Panama City

Each year the Pilot Club of Panama City, Inc. helps out at Special Olympics in Panama City by writing the ribbons. This year’s event was the largest yet despite the cold weather. The Special Olympics opened with the parade of athletes and the torch run followed by events ranging from track to the softball throw.

2014 Pilot International Annual Convention & Leadership Conference

The Gift of Pilot Friendship Pilots from the United States, Canada, Singapore, Japan, the Bahamas, and South Africa will gather in friendship and service in Chicago July 2-6 for the 2014 Pilot International Annual Convention and Leadership Conference. Our Anchors will join together for their exciting Anchor Leadership Summit. The value of the service that Pilots and Anchors provide to others is priceless, and the friendship we share is a gift beyond measure! How many people did you become friends with through your involvement in Pilot International? We gather at club meetings and events, at community events, at district and international conventions, and experience the bonds of friendship being expanded and strengthened. Just recently, a Pilot contacted me regarding a vacation in Charleston, SC, and I was only too happy to suggest some attractions there. While the Executive Committee had their mid-year meeting in Orlando, several local Pilots reached out in support. Another Pilot stopped by my area on her way home from a visit up north and we had a delightful visit. You too, have heartwarming stories of connecting with your Pilot friends, and the more you attend events outside of your local club, the more friendships you establish and nurture. This year at the Pilot International Annual Convention and Leadership Conference in Chicago, Illinois, Pilots, Co-Pilots, and Anchors who will be attending the luncheon on Friday are asked to bring a small gift. It should be a gift valued at $5 or less and the unwrapped package should contain your name, address, cell phone, and email. The gift should reflect something about you, your likes, or the area you reside in. These gifts will be collected by the doorkeepers at the Opening Celebration on Wednesday, July 2nd, and then will reappear wrapped on the tables at the “Celebrating You” Luncheon on Friday, July 4th. You will be encouraged to meet your new friend sometime during convention and take a photo on your phone or iPad that you can share. If you don’t have one of those devices, ask someone who does, and they will be glad to assist. What a gift you will find in that new friendship! Another way we will be sharing the gift of Pilot friendship is through our new Mentor and First Time Attendee Program. Pilots who have attended at least one previous convention are encouraged to check on the convention registration form if they would like to serve as a Mentor to a First Time Attendee. All First Time Attendees will be assigned a Mentor. The Mentors and First Time Attendees will receive information forms to complete from PI Headquarters. These forms will be sent to PI Membership Coordinator Rhona Espinoza, who will match up the First Time Attendees with Mentors and notify them prior to convention. This way they can begin their new bond of friendship and decide on the best way to communicate during convention. How exciting it will be for First Time Attendees to have a new friend to help answer their questions regarding convention! All First Time Attendees and Mentors are invited to stop by the Presidential Suite on Wednesday, July 2nd, from 4:00 to 5:00 pm for a fun social time together. You are encouraged to communicate prior to this event so that you can plan to come together! Join me in celebrating the gift of Pilot friendship not only at convention but each and every day!

Author of “Get to Good: A Mantra for Life” Keynote Speaker 2014 Pilot International Annual Covention & Leadership Conference is a spokesperson for empowerment! As an international speaker, life coach and founder of Jacqueline International, Inc., her career path came from her prior experience as lead coach and speaker in Tony Robbins’ famous life coaching organization. Jacqueline is most known for her mainstream transformational coaching for individuals and audiences worldwide. Her popular Jacqueline ISM, Oh My Stars, is her voice of empowerment calling upon potential. She is intrigued by the power of the human spirit, complemented by the universal laws, to live as the beings God intended. About the Book

“Magnify your potential; not your problems.” - Jacqueline

All DESIRES you seek come from abundance, also known as alignment. How can you access your potential and create The Good Life? GET TO GOOD shows you how to access personal alignment using profound lifestyle conditioning for accelerated abundance. With this book as your guide, you will be able to get out of your own way, get off it and Get to Good.

Once you know how to access your personal alignment, you will begin to experience more of the good life, as defined by you. Jacqueline invites you to Get to Good, allowing your potential to come out and play today. Why not take the shortcut to abundance and feel good now? What are you waiting for? Permission granted! Do you ever wonder why some days are better than others? Think having the good life is really coincidence, luck and favoritism? As the fortuneteller of your life, you get whatever you think about whether you want it or not.

A belief or mantra is a conditioned thought; what have you been thinking lately? Does it serve you? If you continue to tell the story of what is then you cannot give your attention to what you want. Your current state of affairs does not have to be your consistent reality. Reality is nothing more than what is currently occupying your mind and captivating your attention. When you give attention to your desires and feel good now before the evidence of your desires show up, you end up taking the shortcut to the good life. The only reason you do not choose to Get to Good now is because you give more attention to your sophisticated excuses than your potential. With a little bit of practice and insight, you will find yourself choosing alignment for the pure sake of alignment. The intention behind Get to Good is personal alignment for accelerated abundance in every area of your life. Take a moment to imagine the possibilities of you being aligned in your spirit, health, finances, relationships, career and purpose in life. Savannah Stewart is an

by Sandy Ingram Anchor Coordinator Past President , Panama City Pilot Club With the help of new Anchor Advisor Jan Hurst, Savannah Stewart, Anchor President at Arnold High School, has brought Arnold's Anchor Club back from nearly folding. Savannah recruited over 35 new members - all by herself! Savannah is senior class president and holds a 4.54 GPA. She has been a member of the Arnold High School since the ninth grade. She has served as president of the club for two years. In order to assist neighboring Mosley High School's Anchor Advisor, Kim Thompson (43), with medical expenses from her ongoing fight with brain cancer, I asked Savannah and her club for help with a bake sale to raise money for Kim. Savannah got right on it. She organized a meeting to make posters showing people whom we were trying to help. She asked for help from Arnold's faculty to bake items and made sure there were plenty of Anchors at the bake sale to hold up posters and bring in customers. Through Savannah's excellent leadership and enthusiasm, her club's effort helped to raise over $600 in bake sales to help Kim in her time of need. I am extremely proud of Savannah and believe she is truly the kind of Anchor we Pilots can be proud of. Savannah is truly an OUTSTANDING ANCHOR!

We are excited to announce that more awards have been added to the 2013-14 Anchor Award program! There will be cash awards and scholarships available to the winners, and all will receive their awards at the Anchor Leadership Summit in Chicago this coming July.

Char Ebert is an

Outstanding Char Ebert is a member of the Pilot Club of Iowa City Nomination and Article by Linda Bergquist, Pilot Club of Iowa City

We all have that one Pilot member that we wish we could ‘clone’. You know, the Pilot who epitomize the Pilot International Code of Ethics in all areas of her life. The Pilot who is undoubtedly the most upbeat member of your Pilot club, never saying a bad word about anyone or anything, the one who supports Pilot activities and always says ‘yes’ when asked to participate in or lead a project, and always follows-through for that positive result. Pilot Club of Iowa City’s member, Char Elbert, has all those qualities and, on top of all that, she’s just darn cute with an infectious laugh. Char recently retired from a successful career in the field of Medical Technology, specifically from a management position with the DeGowin Blood Center at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. Retirement has meant free time to spend with husband Glenn and travel to visit their two sons and their families (including 6 grandchildren) in Chicago and Phoenix. It also provides more time to pursue outside interests including bridge and euchre, participate in a local stock club and gold league, and, of course, with Pilot Club activities. Char is an accomplished pianist, sharing that talent with her church and others. She delivers meals for Meals on Wheels, and has encouraged her Pilot friends to participate as well. Char began her ‘career’ with Pilot Club in 1995. She has served the Iowa City club as Corresponding Secretary, Director and President (2001-02). She was our Pilot Sweetheart in 2012. Currently she cochairs the Projects Division - and will be a hard act to follow. Her Pilot activities include: scholarship and grants/compliance activities which have been very successful under her leadership; she organizes regular group volunteer efforts with Potentially Yours, a local organization focusing on support and employment for individuals with brain injury related issues; she is a consistent participant with the IC Pilot Group in both bi-annual highway clean-up and the Iowa City Free Lunch Program; she has participated in the organization of a yearly panty or financial ‘shower’ for the Johnson County Sexual Assault Response Team; she organizes a Pilot walk team for the annual NAMI walk; she has been instrumental in invigorating IC Pilot Club’s BrainMinders’ presentations; she has been an active participant in the Iowa City Pilot Book Club since its onset ten years ago; and she chaired the festivities of the Iowa City Pilot Club’s 50th Anniversary Celebration - a blow-out Tea Party in recognition of this event. Just think what Pilot could accomplish if we had the ability to ‘clone’ individuals' skills!!! Congratulations, Char! You are an OUTSTANDING PILOT!

Camp ASCCA, a nationally recognized leader in providing outdoor recreation for people with disabilities and health impairments is located on Lake Martin in Jackson Gap, Alabama. The mission of Camp ASCCA is to help eligible individuals with disabilities and/or health impairments achieve equality, dignity and maximum independence. The campers and their caregivers were grateful for the camp experience. Because of a lack of funding from the Alabama Head Injury Foundation, the campers have not had the opportunity to come together until this event. This was the first camp experience was for one camper. His mother, who is his caregiver, was thankful as well for the opportunity the camp provided to meet other caregivers. Watching her son sing a song at the talent show caused her to cry. All of the campers continually expressed their gratitude to us for sponsoring the camp. The Alabama Head Injury Foundation is a state wide agency founded in 1963 to increase the public awareness of Traumatic Brain Injury and to provide supportive services to families affected by head injuries. This Camp was made possible through a Matching Grant from Pilot International. by Kay Chandler Chair, TBI Camp

Coordinators'Messages Anchor Coordinator Missy Ridgway,

mhridgway@gmail.com A few thoughts as we get ready to end another year as Pilots and Anchors……

As the Anchor year is coming to a close and schools are getting ready for summer break, now is the time to reminisce on what great things have happened this past year and be thankful that your club had the opportunity to make a difference to someone. Pilot Clubs that sponsor an Anchor Club(s), I would encourage you to invite some of the Anchors to a Pilot meeting at the end of the year and let them give you a report on what they did this past year and what their plans are for next year. It is amazing to hear how busy an Anchor Club stays through the year and all the good they do around their community. This is also a great time for your Pilot Club to recognize the achievements of those Anchor Members and make them feel special for who they are as a person and an Anchor Member. Would you like to recognize some special Anchors at the end of the school year and give them a little “something special”? You may not be aware but the Pilot Peddler on the PI Website under SHOP has a few new items for Anchor. There are two new shirts and the graduation cords that could be a great gift for a graduating Senior Anchor. Just remember though, as sad as it is, not all schools will allow Seniors to wear non academic cords for graduation, so check with the school guidelines before placing an order. I hope that many of you as Pilots had an opportunity to attend an Anchor Convention this year and learn more about the Anchor Organization in your Districts and what wonderful Anchors we have in our Pilot/ Anchor family. Please make sure to send your Convention Pictures and articles to anchor@pilothq.org so those can be shared with everyone. If by chance you missed an Anchor Convention this year, then go ahead and mark your calendar for next year – it is sure to be an event you will never forget! We are making plans for the International Anchor Leadership Summit to be held in Chicago this July and hope that all the International Anchors are being encouraged to attend. As a sponsoring Pilot and Pilot Club we need to pull together and do more than just “encourage” the Anchors to attend, we need to step up and help get them there. You say it is too expensive? Then ask yourself a few simple questions and do some simple math….. How many Pilot Clubs are in your District? Could each give $25-$30 to sponsor at least one Anchor? How many Pilot Members are in your District? Could each give $5$10 to sponsor an Anchor to attend? Maybe not one individual Pilot can make this happen, but if everyone pulls together as a Pilot Team – anything is possible!!

Encourage your Club, District Officers and members to step up and “DO MORE” to support the future of Pilot and get these Anchors more involved on the International level! I am looking forward to seeing many new and returning Anchors in Chicago this year – don’t you want to be a part of that too? I hope you find at least one of these thoughts of mine to be something you and/or your club can do in the coming months – Do MORE, Care MORE and Be MORE – that is what we are all about! Sending my Pilot and Anchors hugs for you all!!

Fundraising Coordinator Cathy Gore,

cathypilot@gmail.com Tips for Making the Most out of Your Silent Auction Event If your Club decides to run a silent auction, here are some tips to make the most out of the event:

• Be organized: The single best way to run a successful and stress free auction is to start organized and stay organized. Track your auction items, set up systems for bid sheets and thank you letters, and be firm with deadlines, Promote the event: Don’t forget, this is a fundraising event, and the best way to get people to attend events is to promote it through your network, board, website, and donor base. Seek out new donors: Silent auctions are an easy way to seek out new donors… businesses that have no connection to your organization will often be willing to donate an item, which can lead to a longer term connection. Be creative: The more unique items you can source to offer at your silent auction, the more buzz (and bids) you will generate. Offer the usual fare (like restaurant gift cards), but also seek out special, one of a kind items to generate excitement. Find sponsors: Ticket sales and auction proceeds aren’t the only ways to raise money from this type of event. Seek out sponsors who will write a check in return for marketing consideration, free tickets, etc. You need more staff than you realize: If this is your first silent auction event, know that you will need more staff on hand than you might otherwise think. Have a lot of volunteers or staff available to answer questions, process checkouts, and tidy up the auction items on a regular basis. Have fun: Silent auctions needn’t be strictly formal events. Make this a fun time for your guests (think: good food, open bar, a band) and they will want to attend the event year after year.

Coordinators'Messages Leadership Development Coordinator

it is recommended that you plan to attend the Mentoring Meet and Greet on Wednesday, July 2nd at 5:00pm in President Judy Langley’s suite.

Gail Sharber,

Upon receipt of your 2014 PI Annual Convention & Leadership Conference registration form (indicating your desire to participate), PIHQ will send you a form to complete to either be a part of the Mentor Program as a Mentee or as a Mentor according to your interest. All the details are on the form. Forms are due by Friday, June 6th and should be sent to me at ruapilot2@msn.com or snail mail me at 843 M. C. Baca Lane, Belen, NM 87002.

gsharber@gmail.com Leading with Generosity Spring time is around the corner. Nature is starting to showcase all the beauty it beholds. It is time for Pilots to showcase their clubs. Where are you showcasing your club?

Leading with generosity is like preparing a garden. The objective is growth and prosperity. It is about transforming tiny seeds, like ideas, into healthy, nutritious plants and radiant flowers. It is about giving energy and sharing enthusiasm in order to gain energy and enthusiasm within the club. It takes all club members for the club to flourish. How can you help your club help you? We must be generous with our time, our resources, and our attention to others. We must give of ourselves to our club and community. To obtain healthy growth, be it a garden, a team or an entire organization, we must appreciate and nurture life in our clubs and communities. We must give of ourselves to realize our vision and generate positive results. Challenges will come our way to discourage us. Weeds will attempt to overtake our beautiful garden or club. But a passionate leader will quickly recognize the need for attention, integrity and discipline and act decisively. We must always ask ourselves, "What do I have to offer?” and, "How can I give more?” When we are generous with our heart, time, and passion , we grow more love, passion, and kindness in serving those around us and in our communities. I encourage you to help your club grow in number, but most importantly in passion for serving others.

Membership Coordinator Rhona Espinoza,

You will be paired and notified prior to conference so that participants of the program will hopefully be in contact prior to meeting at the conference in July, and you should plan to meet with each other a minimum of 2 times during the conference. Growing our membership is vital to our future. I do encourage each club to assess (on a continual basis) their club’s relevance in their communities as well as in their members. How is your club impacting your community? How relevant is Pilot in your member’s lives and priorities? We have to change with the times or we will be left behind. This new generation of volunteers needs to feel that their tech savvy approach to volunteerism is embraced by especially our traditional clubs. These are tough questions, but they are like the elephant in the room. If we don’t evolve, we will become irrelevant. Pilot is important to our world; make it a priority to be involved and grow your membership. I have been honored to serve as your Pilot International Membership Coordinator. I do hope to see you at the 2014 PI Annual Convention and Leadership Conference in July. Blessings always, Rhona Espinoza

Projects Coordinator Gera Schutz,

Happy Spring Pilots! Well, the calendar says it is spring, but I think Mother Nature has been misinformed. As I write this, my backyard is covered in a fresh layer of snow! Nevertheless, spring is a great time to re-evaluate your club’s projects and research new ideas.

ruapilot2@msn.com Woo Hoo!!! We have been working on a new program that we believe will have a wonderful impact on those that participate! Beginning this year at the PI Convention and Leadership Conference in Chicago, we will provide a Mentor to First Time Attendees Program.

On your conference registration form, there is a box provided if you are a First Time Attendee or would like to serve as a Mentor. As a ground rule, you must be attending the conference for at least 3 days, and pilotinternational.org

Before your club’s planning session, make sure you have done your homework and bring the statistics with you. For every project your club has done this year, have this information handy: • • •

Whom did it impact? Does it impact one of the ABCs of Pilot? How many did it impact?

How did it impact them? Did your club receive adequate publicity? Did it put undue stress on your budget or resources (including club members)? • What improvements can you make? • And finally, does the club want to do this project again? For those projects you feel might not make the cut, don’t automatically give them the axe! Explore ways to improve the project and make it a better fit for your club. Visit this month’s Projects Coordinator Corner for tips on how to improve projects! If your club decides that they will discontinue a project and needs to find a new project, those same questions can be helpful to ask about the potential new projects! For new project ideas: • Stay informed about your local community! Read the newspapers. Watch local talk shows. Attend community forums. • Network! Join the Chamber. Become part of a networking group specifically for community service organizations. • Call! Make personal contact with organizations that could benefit from your efforts and find out what they might need. • Listen! Pay attention to your friends, family, colleagues, other Pilot Clubs, and church community. You can find wonderful projects by listening to what other people are doing or challenges they might be facing. This includes social media! • Partner! Don’t get stuck in a rut, thinking that your club always has to go it alone. There’s power in numbers, so recruit other organizations to help with projects that might be too big for you, or offer your assistance to other organizations. • And finally, attend Pilot District Conventions and Pilot International Convention! There will be valuable information and people with experience and expertise at these gatherings. Take advantage of this season of renewal and revive your club’s projects division with a thorough checkup! You’ll find your planning session runs much more smoothly and your members will be invigorated with the thought of new or improved community service! See in you in Chicago in July!

CARE MORE • PILOT LOG

Last year in New Orleans at the 2013 Pilot International Convention, I entered my name in a drawing for a free WhisperGLIDE® swing. I was very familiar with the WhisperGLIDE® swing as our Pilot Club of South Brunswick Islands (North Carolina District) had donated one to a local long term care facility in our town several years ago. The approximate value of the swing is $5500. The WhisperGLIDE® swing allows individuals in wheel chairs to sit and swing with their family members or friends without having to leave their wheel chair. It is an invaluable asset to any facility. It definitely improves that quality of life for those individuals who are wheel chair bound by allowing enjoyable quality time with family and friends. No one was more surprised than me when my name was called as the winner of the drawing. How wonderful to have the opportunity a second time to donate a WhisperGLIDE® swing to a facility where it would provide enjoyment for its residents. We donated the swing to Universal Health Care, a fairly new facility (5 years) with 90 beds located in Supply, North Carolina. When I called Mr. Kirk Rogers, the administrator, and told him our plans, he was very excited and appreciative. He was extremely familiar with WhisperGLIDE®, as the facility where he was the administrator previously in Virginia had one. After putting the WhisperGLIDE® representative in touch with Mr. Rogers, they coordinated the delivery of the swing. Mr. Rogers prepared a lovely spot in the main courtyard area, adjacent to a beautiful flower bed. He was extremely pleased with the communication and the smooth delivery of the swing to his facility by WhisperGLIDE®. The Pilot Club of South Brunswick Islands and I are so proud and grateful for the opportunity to be able to provide continued enjoyment of the WhisperGLIDE® swing to the residents of Universal Health Care.

PILOT INTERNATIONAL FAST FACTS PIHQ STAFF

Pilot International is a community-based volunteer service organization, founded in 1921 in Macon, GA, on the guiding principles of “Friendship and Service.”

Pilots are everywhere! With more than 8000 members in almost 400 Pilot Clubs, Pilots can be found across the US, and also in The Bahamas, Canada, Japan, Singapore and South Africa.

Committed to “Do More. Care More. and Be More” for their communities every day, Pilots provide financial and hands-on support for numerous national and local initiatives in keeping with our “A-B-C’s.”

A

Anchor Clubs (Youth Development & Leadership) In 1952, Pilot began to recruit youth volunteers through the establishment of Anchor Clubs, a volunteer service organization for young people. Today, there are over 8000 Anchors worldwide with new clubs and members being added monthly. Through professionally developed curriculum and strategic partnerships with national organizations such as DoSomething.org and others, Pilot encourages and provides opportunities for Youth Development & Leadership around the globe.

B

Brain Safety & Fitness Since 1992, Pilot International has worked in the area of brain-related service. In 2013, Pilot narrowed its focus to Brain Safety & Fitness as the majority of our clubs were working in this area. Pilots participate in Pilot International’s BrainMindersTM family of brain-safety educational programs for elementary-aged children. Pilots are also proud partners of Safe Kids Worldwide and often participate in local safety fairs and bike rodeos to help educate children about injury prevention and brain-safe practices.

C

Caring for Families in Times of Need In 2013, Pilot International introduced the “Pick Me Ups” initiative for Family Caregivers that seeks to promote awareness of the unique needs of these special individuals. Through both fundraising and hands-on service work, local Pilot and Anchor Clubs provide a “little Pick Me Up” for deserving Caregivers in their communities. Working directly with local agencies to identify deserving Caregiver candidates, Pilot Clubs grant the specific “Pick Me Up” experience chosen by the recipient. Pilots support several camps for TBI survivors and their family members, and Pilot International was also instrumental in establishing the second week of November as International Care & Kindness Week. Pilots are proud supporters of Project Lifesaver and other organizations that seek to provide aid, and FOLLOW US! peace of mind to Family Caregivers PIHeadquarters of all kinds.

• OUR MISSION: To serve by furthering Pilot International’s humanitarian efforts through charitable, educational, and research programs in communities throughout the world.
