Meet Dr. Matthew Standridge Dr. Matthew Standridge grew up in Rural East Tennessee on an organic farm, but it was an area without much in the way of healthcare. From early on he knew he wanted to be a doctor and the specialty of family medicine. Dr. Standridge thinks family physicians have a unique role in their patients’ lives: “Family physicians are the front line of American healthcare.” In medical school he did a rural training track and pursued my residency in Colorado at a site that historically trains physicians to be in rural and underresourced areas. Before joining TMH Physician Partners - SouthWood, he have had an exciting career ranging from Rural North Carolina to Inner City Chicago and before starting in SouthWood, he worked at the TMH Physician Partners - Wakulla location for 6 years. He loves to cook, run, read and be on the water fishing or sailing. But most of all he enjoy spending time with his wife, Dana and four children: Claire, Ben, Laurel and Rowan.

BIOPHILIC DESIGN FOR BEHAVIORAL HEALTH • • • •
Designers: Year Completed: Size: Location:
ZGF Architects March 2016 15,605sf Seattle
GOALS To provide patients with most soothing, calming biophilic environment that is visually interesting.
STUDY SUMMARY
The Swedish Ballard Behavioral Health Unit in Seattle was designed to make patients feel connected to nature not trough literal integration of greenery or imagery of greenery, but by association with nature. Numerous studies have shown our brain will intuitively pick up on visual cues that resemble natural settings in details such as patterns, textures and layouts. In the example above, the abstraction of the verticality and the rhythm is meant to be associated with trees. The color going from dark to light is meant to be associated with going from dark ground to light sky to make patients subconsciously feel like they are in nature. This strategies have been showing positive responses.
Use of color associated with nature going from dark to light
• • • • 2 Incorporation of textures associated with nature
Circadian lighting strategy to help promote healing
DESIGN IMPLICATIONS Use of textures that would resemble nature for overall positive atmosphere Use of colors and forms associated with nature to help visitors feel connected Use of patterns resembling those found in nature Incorporation different temperature lighting to imitate natural changes of light throughout the day
NELSON HOUSE • • • •
Designers: Year Completed: Size: Location:
Gilling Dod Architects March 2012 10,115sf Gosport, Hampshire
GOALS To provide patients with the environment where the feel at home as opposed to healthcare facility.
STUDY SUMMARY The Nelson House, is a healthcare facility/rehabilitation Hospital for men 18-65 suffering from mental health problems. Men that do get admitted here are there to get assistance through therapy and targeted activities to help them to be reunited with the community. Taking all of the factors into consideration, during the schematic design phase the team decided to provide patients with interiors with more of a hospitality or even a home-like feel. After additional research and careful consideration, they chose a beach theme to provide the most soothing, comfortable atmosphere for the most successful recovery of the patients. GOALS Based on the research that was conducted during the schematic phase and its findings, it was determined that stressful environments could worsen existing conditions and impact patients and employees in a negative way. Goals for the design of Southwood Medical Center include: • Create a soothing, calming environment through the incorporation of biophilia and imagery of nature to create a spa-like atmosphere • Use finishes that possess anti-microbial properties, however, aesthetically do not reflect stereotypical sterile appearance of finishes used in medical facilities. • Provide patients and employees with a comfortable level of lighting through use of natural, decorative, architectural and task lighting.

mind
SERENITY Predesign research suggests that stressful environments negatively impact both, patients and care providers. Numerous studies suggest true healing starts from within and stress weakens the immune system, making patients more prone to illness, so avoiding stress is critical in human health. Design is the new frontier of environmental health, as such goals for this project are to create a place of healing and eliminate stress. The design of the Southwood Medical clinic will promote healing and reduce stress through a holistic, almost spa-like environment. The design will incorporate elements of biophilia to help patients feel connected to nature, which has been shown to have a positive effect on healing. Art and accessories featuring vibrant colors will offer visual stimulation and positive distraction. A combination of soothing, natural and soft, artificial lighting will also be an important part of the design providing patient with an adequate, but not overwhelming amount of light. Use of architectural elements, decorative fixtures and creative lighting solutions will make the space feel more inviting and less like a stereotypical, sterile healthcare facility.
