Based on the research that was conducted during the schematic phase and its findings, it was determined that stressful environments could worsen existing conditions and impact patients and employees in a negative way. Goals for the design of Southwood Medical Center include: • Create a soothing, calming environment through the incorporation of biophilia and imagery of nature to create a spa-like atmosphere • Use finishes that possess anti-microbial properties, however, aesthetically do not reflect stereotypical sterile appearance of finishes used in medical facilities. • Provide patients and employees with a comfortable level of lighting through use of natural, decorative, architectural and task lighting.

CONCEPT

Pre-design research suggests that stressful environments negatively impact both, patients and care providers. Numerous studies suggest true healing starts from within and stress weakens the immune system, making patients more prone to illness, so avoiding stress is critical in human health. Design is the new frontier of environmental health, as such goals for this project are to create a place of healing and eliminate stress. The design of the Southwood Medical clinic will promote healing and reduce stress through a holistic, almost spa-like environment. The design will incorporate elements of biophilia to help patients feel connected to nature, which has been shown to have a positive effect on healing. Art and accessories featuring vibrant colors will offer visual stimulation and positive distraction. A combination of soothing, natural and soft, artificial lighting will also be an important part of the design providing patient with an adequate, but not overwhelming amount of light. Use of architectural elements, decorative fixtures and creative lighting solutions will make the space feel more inviting and less like a stereotypical, sterile healthcare facility.
