CHATHAM. IT’S WHERE YOU WANT TO BE. We would like to welcome you to our beautiful town and hope you will enjoy your time here. We think you will agree that Chatham is a very special and memorable place to visit. During this time of uncertainty, please be mindful of our state of Massachusetts social distancing guidelines. You will find the natural beauty of Chatham remarkable. Visitors are drawn to the expansive and magnificent beaches, the lighthouse, wildlife, nature trails, bike path, and stunning views of the ocean. Chatham has a special blend of the past and present with quaint streets lined with historic sea captains’ homes, a fine selection of historic museums, and a walking downtown area with unique shops, galleries, and restaurants. Lodging options range from a spectacular oceanfront resort to lovely bed and

breakfast inns tucked in throughout this picturesque seaside village. Chatham is located on the elbow of Cape Cod surrounded on three sides by water. Located halfway between Falmouth and Provincetown, it extends out to sea as the most easterly point in Massachusetts. Once a quiet farming and fishing community, Chatham has become a vibrant tourist destination. Rich in its maritime heritage, as well as a spirited New England town with a variety of small businesses, Chatham is a special place for year-round residents and visitors alike. We hope you will find our town as special as we do, and that you will return many times in the future to enjoy the beauty of this wonderful seaside village and all that it has to offer.

all about chatham PHOTO COURTESY OF RUTH M. HAUZINGER

One of Cape Cod’s oldest townships, Chatham was settled in 1656 by William and Anne Busby Nickerson. Incorporated in 1712, Chatham now has approximately 6,200 residents, according to the town census list. Originally a farming community, Chatham’s inhabitants found deep sea fishing to be a more lucrative occupation. Today, small boat deep sea fishing and shellfishing continue as important maritime industries. Chatham covers an area of approximately 17 square miles and is a happy combination of past and present. You will find Chatham to be an old-fashioned and picturesque New England seaside village, yet offering the best in modern facilities. Surrounded by water on three sides, Chatham benefits from Mother Nature’s “natural air conditioning” with cool summers, exquisite autumns, and mild winters. It is a comfortable place in which to live year-round or visit on vacation. Chatham operates under the town meeting form of government. The executive officers are a board of five part-time Selectmen and a Town Manager. The citizens of Chatham enjoy the special benefits of forward-looking zoning and planning, and both public and private conservation efforts.

weather SUMMER: Chatham lies at the “elbow”

of the Cape — at latitude 41.40 North and longitude 69.58 West. We are fortunate in having navigable waters on three sides, and, as a result, the average summer temperature is close to 70 degrees. We do have fogs but they’re rarely cold in summer. They are a boon to our gardens and usually yield to the sun by noon. Chatham fogs are just one more “conversation piece.”

AUTUMN & INDIAN SUMMER: This

is one of our finest seasons, growing more popular each year. The water is never bluer than in October, the air is bracing and dry, the scenery at its best with the sharpest colors of the year. Swimming in September or early October is not too cold for hardy folk. Indian Summer lingers through September, October, and well into November — a

succession of glorious days and cool evenings. It’s an uncrowded time for tennis and golf, bicycling and hiking, beach exploring, sailing and fishing. It’s all part of Chatham’s Indian Summer. Come savor it with us!

WINTER: Our average winter temperature is about ten degrees warmer than on the mainland. We do get an occasional fall of snow which doesn’t last.

SPRING: March to May is our spring, when

we expect the thermometer to read in the upper thirties to low fifties most of the time. But when June comes, it “Busts Out All Over.” The waters of Pleasant Bay sparkle, and soon our famous roses and early flowers are in bloom everywhere.

It is an easy way to find your way to many of Chatham’s historic and scenic points of interest, using a smartphone or other portable device Find your own way around to whichever locations interest you, or follow one of the predefined Tours that will take you on tours such as Chatham’s museums, all the points of interest around the Chatham Lighthouse area, Main Street historic buildings, or the Chatham Loop tour. The Mayflower and the Nickersons BY DEBR A L AWLESS For centuries, descendants of Chatham’s founders William and Anne Nickerson who are also descendants of Mayflower passengers have traced and celebrated their genealogies. Warren Sears Nickerson (1880-1966) of East Harwich was a ninth-generation descendant of William and Anne. No less than nine of Sears Nickerson’s ancestors sailed aboard the Mayflower. In 1931 Nickerson published a book called Land Ho! 1620: A Seaman’s Story of the Mayflower-- Her Construction, Her Navigation and her First Landfall. Nickerson wrote his meticulously-researched account of the ship’s 1620 journey around the 50-mile “Back Side” of Cape Cod from Monomoy to Provincetown from the perspective of a seaman. On the afternoon of Nov. 9, 1620, the Mayflower came to a turning point in the dangerous Pollack Rip off Chatham. There, Capt. Christopher Jones steered the ship north, effectively ending its voyage to the Hudson River. Two days later, the ship anchored in Provincetown where it remained for roughly five weeks before sailing west to Plymouth. Seventeen years later, in 1637, William and Anne Nickerson landed in Salem. In 1664 the Nickersons were the first European pioneers to settle in Monomoit, later the Town of Chatham. In between the fateful turning of the Mayflower and the Nickersons’ arrival in Chatham, Chatham

added one more quirky footnote to 17th century history. Less than a mile from the Nickersons’ future homestead, the Native American Squanto, who taught the Pilgrims to plant crops, died under mysterious circumstances near Jackknife Cove. The year was 1622. A plaque at the Nickerson Family Association, Inc., at 1107 Orleans Road, North Chatham, commemorates Squanto’s life, as does a stone that proclaims that Squanto died “within gunshot” of the stone. For centuries, descendants of William and Anne and descendants of the Mayflower Pilgrims have intermarried, especially in the small towns of Cape Cod. In the fall of 2018 Mayflower descendant Ron Nickerson cofounded a Chatham Mayflower group. The descendants plan a luncheon at Chatham Bars Inn on Nov. 19, 2020, 400 years after the Mayflower turned around just off-shore there. The group plans field trips and other commemorations in the months leading up to the November 2020 landing of the Mayflower; a commemorative “Turning Point” medallion has been produced by Chatham Jewelers. If you are a Mayflower descendant, 2020 is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to celebrate your Mayflower heritage and to visit all the Mayflower sites that the Cape has to offer.

North Beach Island/Inlet

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW NORTH BEACH ISLAND/INLET Swim at your own risk North Beach Island does not have lifeguards or beach patrol. The beach is swim at your own risk. Please be aware of rip tides, surf conditions and dangerous currents. No swimming at the Cut The new inlet that divides North (Nauset) Beach and North River Beach Island is closed to swimming. The currents are severe and treacherous. No flotation devices are allowed. There is absolutely no swimming in the cut by mandatory order of the Chatham Board of Health, the Harbormaster and the Park & Recreation Commission. Please pay attention to all signage.

chathaminfo.com

Boaters/Kyakers The surf conditions and currents in the inlets are extremely dangerous. Anyone without local knowledge and experience should avoid using the inlets at all times. Small craft, sailing vessels, kayaks and boards of any kind should not use the inlets. They can be easily swept out to the ocean and into dangerous surf. Chatham Harbor The currents are also very strong in Chatham Harbor. Ocean waves break in the harbor. Please pay attention to the tides and the shifting shoals. Schedule boating activities according to the tides. All vessels should heed the “Rough Bar’ warning (quick flashing yellow light) at the Chatham Lighthouse Coast Guard Station. Careful operation and navigation is required by all mariners and swimmers.

seal watching Harbor and gray seals are the most common species in Chatham, and can often be seen resting or hauled-out on rock piles, ledges, sand bars, and jetties exposed during low tide around the Chatham shoals from the North Beach breakthrough to South Beach and Monomoy. They’re also found resting on isolated beaches, in marshes, and on floating docks at all tide stages. The best time to see seals is within 2 hours of low tide on a sunny midday afternoon. Because seals cannot move well on land, during high tide they position themselves over submerged jetties. When the tide goes out they are left exposed, sitting on the jetty basking in the sun. If left undisturbed, they will stay on the rocks until the tide comes in again. If conditions are right, approximately 1,500 to 2,000 seals can be seen in the afternoons at Monomoy Island.

downtown Main Street. Built by Colonel Benjamin Godfrey in 1797, the Mill remains almost exactly as it was when it was grinding corn for early Chatham residents. It is a prime example of a post-Revolutionary War commercial venture that served the community for more than one-hundred years. The Mill originally located overlooking Mill Pond was donated to the Town of Chatham by Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Crocker and moved to its present location in 1956. The Mill was restored for the 300th anniversary of the Town of Chatham in 2012. Today thousands of visitors visit the Mill during the summer season and walk in the steps of many who used the Mill to supply them with corn meal and local gossip. CHATHAM FISH PIER

The Chatham Fish Pier, at the corner of Shore Road and Barcliff Avenue on Aunt Lydia’s Cove, is a constant source of interest to our summer visitors. The members of the fishing fleet make their run each suitable day to the fishing grounds from 3 to 100 miles off Chatham. Their catch consists of haddock, cod, flounder, lobster, pollack, dogfish and halibut. The fresh fish is placed in ice and transported in refrigerated trucks to the New York, Boston, New Bedford, and local markets, arriving less than 24 hours from the time it is taken from the ocean. The boats start returning to the pier shortly after noon, depending upon the tide. You

FISHERMAN’S MONUMENT

Several years ago, a community committee was formed to recognize the Chatham fishing industry in our town. It was decided to plan and erect a monument to this unique industry at the Chatham Fish Pier. From an international competition with about 100 entrants, the committee narrowed the selection to a final three, which were submitted to our fishing community for a final selection. The winning choice was designed by Sig Purwin — an artist and sculptor from Woods Hole —and dedicated in June 1992. The monument, entitled “The Provider,” features a strong hand pulling a fishing net from the sea with many fish and shellfish indigenous to Chatham caught in the net. Visit the monument at the Chatham Fish Pier. It shows our pride in the people of our fishing industry — the proud, independent providers to the world of the Atlantic’s best seafood!

MAYO HOUSE

The Josiah Mayo House located at 540 Main Street is an excellent example of life on Main Street in the 1800s. It was built between 1818 and 1820 by Josiah Mayo, a Blacksmith by trade, who was Postmaster

56

in Chatham for 40 years, Treasurer for 27 years and Selectman for two years. The house was occupied by members of the family until 1938. In 1974 it was purchased by Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank, and two years later it became the property of the Chatham Conservation Foundation. The CCF has restored the house. Many local residents and visitors tour the Mayo House each summer. For more information, contact 508-945-4084. chathamconservationfoundation.org/ josiah-mayo-house

ATWOOD HOUSE & MUSEUM

Owned and operated by the Chatham Historical Society, the Atwood Museum is located at 347 Stage Harbor Road. The original part of the museum is a house built in the 1750s by sea Captain Joseph Atwood when he was a subject of George II of England. Because the old house was occupied by the Atwood family until 1923, then acquired by the Historical Society in 1925, it has remained unchanged since the time it was built. The house therefore provides an excellent view into the way of life during the 18th and 19th centuries in New England. Over time, several wings were added to the original structure, with the latest expansion constructed between 2003 – 2005 to house more of the Historical Society collections. Today there are twelve spacious galleries featuring art, artifacts, maps, charts, and decorative arts portraying life on Cape Cod since the 17th century. New for 2020, the museum will be opening two new exhibits, The Turning Point and Remembering Our Heroes. Marking the 400 years since the Mayflower first came to Cape Cod’s shores, the Atwood has created the exhibit The Turning Point: The

Wampanoags and the European Settlers. To show what was here long before colonists arrived, The Wampanoags Exhibit, will be available for viewing. This exhibit sponsored by the Kemper Family Foundations details Wampanoag history in Chatham, including a recreated Wetu, a traditional Wampanoag dwelling, diagrams showing important places to the Wampanoag community, and historic timelines. The European Settlers portion of the exhibit will show the different facets of the Mayflower experience. Come and learn about what caused the crew of the Mayflower to turn around off Chatham’s shore and head back around the Cape to Provincetown instead of continuing south to the Hudson River; get to know some of the Mayflower passenger’s and their life stories in our audio component; see what kinds of medical practices were used onboard the ship, and much more. The second new exhibit for 2020 at the Atwood Museum is Remembering Our Heroes: the 75th Anniversary of the End of WWII. This exhibit will outline the progression

of the Second World War and the important role that Chatham played. Between the Naval Air Base and Coast Guard Station, and many other important offices, Chatham was very busy supporting the war effort, and this is our chance to say thank you to those who served our country and remember. Refreshed exhibits are on display in the Museum. Double-Take: Historical & Current Panoramic Photographs of Chatham exhibition features panoramic images of various locations and landscapes taken in the early 1900s and pairs them with photographs of the same places today. Visitors can view vistas like the Iconic Twin Lights of the past next to the lighthouse today; Stage Harbor then and now; Mill Pond and more. The exhibit was created and sponsored by former Atwood Archivist Jean Young and her husband, photographer Andrew Young. Back by popular demand is “The rescue of the Pendleton,” exhibit highlighted by an inspiring mini documentary of the crew of the famed CG 36500 and its daring rescue on February 18, 1952.

One highlight of the museum is the Mural Barn that houses the nationally known portraits of 130 townspeople painted by Alice Stallknecht between 1932 – 1945. Capturing the life and struggles of local residents during that period, a docent relates many fascinating stories about those portrayed. Another gallery is devoted to the history of fishing in the Chatham area and traces the evolution of the fishing industry on Cape Cod through objects, paintings, and photographs. Of special interest to many are displays on cranberry growing, salt works and other trades. On the grounds is the Nickerson North Beach Camp built in 1947 that was moved, with all of the contents intact, to save it from being washed into the sea as the beach eroded, and the working lighthouse lantern room, of one of Chatham’s last twin lights, with its original Fresnel lens. Hundreds of interesting antiques are displayed in the 17 display rooms, providing something for all art lovers, history buffs, students and friends of Chatham and Cape Cod, no matter what their age. Although a complete visit requires about two hours, those with less time can enjoy selected sections of the museum. There is also a book and gift shop, stocked with items relating to the museums’ collections. As stewards of the region’s history and culture, the Chatham Historical Society strives to educate, inform and enlighten the public and bring enthusiasm to the Cape Cod community. The Atwood Museum exhibits are open from May to October with special festive happenings during the holidays. The research library and special programs including a monthly lecture series are available year round. It was restored as a “country depot” and a museum in 1960. Starting with relics of the first commercial railroad in the U.S. in 1826, the exhibits grow each year and include hundreds of items of historical significance in the railroad field, plus models and objects that never fail to interest the visitors. The fully restored 100-year old caboose, the gift of the New York Central System, is open for all to enjoy the sounds of the rails. Young and old will enjoy this “Home on Wheels” of the railroad train crews. The diorama of the Chatham yards of about 1915 is a must-see exhibit. Museum can be opened for groups after season closing by special arrangements. Donations are accepted. Handicapped accessible. For more info: chathamrailroadmuseum.com

MARCONI-RCA WIRELESS MUSEUM The Marconi-RCA Wireless Museum of the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center is located at 847 Orleans Road (Route 28) across from Ryder’s Cove in North Chatham.

In 1914, radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi built a wireless receiving station here paired with a transmitting station in Marion, Massachusetts to provide commercial radio service between the United States and Northern Europe. The campus of 10 original buildings on 11.3 acres has been preserved by the Town of Chatham as the Marconi-RCA National Register Historic District.

Through informative panels, videos and interactive exhibits, visitors to the Wireless History gallery explore radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi’s life and legacy, the role of maritime radio in world events, ship-to-shore communication with the actual shipboard radio from the hospital ship SS Hope, and artifacts from Chatham Radio WCC’s history. Visitors experience firsthand how a radio operator touching a Morse code key in Chatham could be heard by his counterparts aboard ships sailing the seven seas, and learn about the talented and skilled people who conceived, built and operated the station. In addition to relaying commercial and personal messages to ships, WCC communicated with pioneer aviators including Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart and Howard Hughes. Chatham Radio played a significant role in defeating the Germans during the World War II Battle of the Atlantic by intercepting Enigma-encrypted wireless messages between Germany’s headquarters and its ships at sea. “Station C” (its wartime US Navy designation) passed these intercepts on to Washington, D.C. for decoding. As the control station for the East Coast direction-finding network, Station C also directed the search for telltale radio signals that allowed enemy vessels to be located and tracked. Working electronic

60

Enigma cipher machine simulators permit visitors to try their hand at encryption. Exhibits in the Wireless Today gallery chronicle the digital revolution that has shaped our lives today. Learn how ships at sea off Cape Cod are located in real time, about technology that aids the Coast Guard in maritime rescues, and how Great White sharks are tracked via satellite. Visitors can look inside a smart phone, see how many wireless devices surround them, or operate a drone flight simulator. The museum’s third gallery is truly “open space” and open year-round. This is the Antenna Field Trail, a winding path through the flora and fauna of Cape Cod with interpretive signs describing the station’s antennas, and offering views of the preserved 1914 station campus. Some of the antennas are working scaled replicas of the originals, now actively used to communicate with amateur radio operators around the world. Special Exhibits & Programs For 2020 This spring the museum celebrates the second of three consecutive centennials, each historically important to Chatham and to America. Following World War I, the newlyformed Radio Corporation of America (RCA)

Chatham Chamber of Commerce & Merchants Association

P O I N T S O F I N T ER E S T

acquired the assets of the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company of America, including its unfinished installations at Chatham and Marion, Massachusetts. RCA installed stateof-the-art equipment manufactured by U.S. industrial giant General Electric to create Chatham Port wireless station WSO. On May 17, 1920, RCA inaugurated service at its new station, finally realizing Guglielmo Marconi’s dream of sustainable trans-Atlantic communication. Come celebrate the centennial by exploring the newest exhibit, “Chatham on the Air.” And this summer, the Marconi-RCA Wireless Museum features “Radio to the Rescue.” This season-long program highlights how radio communication ended the isolation mariners experienced at sea. The hard lessons learned from early, and even more recent, sea rescues are explored through new exhibits, fascinating speakers and special events. Learn how radio and satellite technology keep people safe and — in emergencies — help save countless lives. The museum and Museum Shop are open daily Tuesday thru Sunday from mid-June to Columbus Day, most weekends during the Spring and Fall, and by appointment offseason. Weekly interpretive programs provide context for the museum’s exhibits, and the Center offers engaging science, technology, engineering & mathematics (STEM) classes for youth year-round. For days and hours of operation, events & programs, and Summer Science classes for kids please visit ChathamMarconi.org or call 508-945-8889.

The Chatham Labyrinth was given to the town by the Chatham Clergy Association in celebration and honor of its 300th Anniversary theme, “Find Your Way Here.” The labyrinth is thought to represent the life journey. The Labyrinth is open to the public during regular park hours. Guided Labyrinth Walks offered during July and August. Recognized as home to one of Cape Cod’s most prolific fishing fleets, Chatham is well known for its fresh fish and seafood. While many restaurants feature the “catch of the day” and other local favorites, there is no lack of other fare, including Italian, French, Continental, Asian and, of course, good old traditional American. Dining in most establishments is casual; and while shoes and shirts are always required, the need for a jacket and tie is rare. Most

restaurants do not accept reservations in season, but they generally do honor major credit cards. On page 84, you will find a list of dining establishments in the Chatham area. The information presented is designed to serve as a guide only; and while we have made every attempt to verify the facts, you should always check with the individual establishments regarding reservations and other details.

nature trails & parks The delightful physical characteristics of Chatham, such as the beaches, marsh and wetlands, and meadows, have long been known to our residents and summer visitors. Preservation of these resources is a benefit to our economy, our fisheries, wildlife and flora, a fact now recognized to a greater extent in the past few years by federal, state and local authorities. Chatham is fortunate in having, in addition to the town Conservation Commission, a privately operated organization in the Chatham Conservation Foundation, Inc., (104 Crowell Road, Chatham, MA 02633), dedicated to the preservation of these valued areas. The Foundation, chartered in 1962, is in the hands of eighteen trustees, including officers and executive committee, all without salary. Call

86

508-945-4084 for information, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 am – 1 pm. Many gifts of wetlands and marshlands have been donated to this organization and others obtained by purchase. To date, more than 588 acres have been put into conservation by the Foundation so they may be enjoyed by our residents and visitors. A highlight of the Foundation’s work in the field of education is its publication A Beachcomber’s Botany, with illustrations by Marcia Gaylord Norman and text by Loren C. Petry. It is a valuable guide to the interesting plant life in the marshes, along the shore, and the upland. You will find a copy of the publication in the public libraries throughout Cape Cod.

MONOMOY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Chatham Lighthouse and Coast Guard Station. Take the first left after the lighthouse, then the first right. Follow Morris Island Road to signs for the refuge on the left. Open Mon – Fri 8 am – 4 pm. For further information, call 508-945-0594. fws.gov/refuge/Monomoy

The summer months see the migration at its height. Chatham and Monomoy Island afford unexcelled opportunity to observe many species, both rare and common. Nearly every species recorded from New England has been seen at some time in this area. The Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge is a link in the chain of migratory waterfowl refuges along the Atlantic Flyway. Access is available by car, by a short boat trip from Chatham. Local boat charters are available. (See “Boats” p.89)

Massachusetts Audubon Society’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary conducts guided natural history tours of Monomoy throughout the year. Call 508-349-2615 for information or reservations. massaudubon.org/get-outdoors/wildlifesanctuaries/wellfleet-bay

Chatham is a mecca for bird enthusiasts. In autumn, Cape Cod is a veritable habitat for birds of numerous species. Its temperate climate attracts many birds through the winter when most have winged south.

The refuge provides nesting, feeding, and resting grounds for a known 285 species. This is one of the most famous and productive ornithological points on the Atlantic seaboard. Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge consists of North and South Monomoy Islands and a portion of Morris Island, Wikis Way. The nearly 3,000 acre refuge stretches approx. ten miles southward into the waters of Nantucket Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. Ninety-four percent of Monomoy’s acreage was designated a Wilderness Area in 1970, and is managed under the guidelines of the Wilderness Act of 1964. It is the only Wilderness area in southern New England. To reach the headquarters on Morris Island, take Route 6 east to Route 137 south to Route 28. A left turn takes you through downtown Chatham (about 3 miles). Turn right at the stop sign to the
