Cape Cod What is it about Cape Cod that keeps visitors coming back? Cape Cod’s enduring popularity can be credited to its scenic beauty and timeless character. Part of Barnstable County, “The Cape” is made up of 15 towns, including several with multiple small villages. The towns are grouped into four geographic regions that each have unique characteristics. The Upper Cape consists of Falmouth, Bourne, Sandwich and Mashpee. Barnstable, Yarmouth and Dennis are considered Mid-Cape, while Brewster, Harwich and Chatham comprise the Lower Cape. The Outer Cape towns are Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown.

UPPER CAPE The town of Bourne straddles the Cape Cod Canal and welcomes visitors to Cape Cod via the Bourne, Sagamore and railroad bridges. With its many harbors, coves and inlets, the town is perfect for fishing and boating enthusiasts Falmouth is best known for its annual road race, held in August, which features a scenic seaside route and attracts runners from around the world. Some of the town’s other attractions include Nobska Point Light, Shining Sea Bikeway and Spohr Gardens. Founded in 1637, Sandwich is one of the oldest towns in America. Visitors can pedal bicycles along the Cape Cod Canal Bikeway or explore the spectacular floral landscape at Heritage Museums & Gardens. Mashpee boasts miles of ocean beaches and four of the largest freshwater ponds on Cape Cod. The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe gained federal recognition in 2010. MARTHA’S VINEYARD
The island of Martha’s Vineyard is home to five lighthouses. capecodgrouptours.com
Martha’s Vineyard is a destination for those seeking solitude and society. While the island’s rural towns of Aquinnah, Chilmark and West Tisbury are home to country stores, remote galleries, sheep farms and remote, gray-shingled homes, the larger, historic villages of Edgartown,
Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven attract visitors with fine restaurants, galleries and shops. Vineyard Haven is the transportation hub and commercial center of the island, with ferries shuttling visitors to and from Woods Hole.

A short distance from downtown Hyannis, Keyes Memorial Beach offers soft sand and a grassy park with picnic tables and restrooms.
MID-CAPE The Mid-Cape offers a blend of rich history and commerce. Stretching along the northern edge of this region is Route 6A, the largest contiguous historic district in the nation. Also known as Old King’s Highway, this winding road is lined with ancient trees, historic inns, art galleries, churches and sea captain’s homes. To the south, Route 28 is a bustling thoroughfare that offers a range of family entertainment and shopping opportunities. Barnstable is the largest and most populous town on Cape Cod. It is made up of seven villages: Barnstable proper, Centerville, Cotuit, Hyannis, Marstons Mills, Osterville and West Barnstable. Due to its central location, Hyannis is the transportation hub for those traveling to and from Cape Cod via airplane, train or bus. The town of Yarmouth is made up of the villages of Yarmouthport, South Yarmouth and West Yarmouth. An array of entertainment options can be found along

Route 28 in South and West Yarmouth, from mini-golf and go-karts to art exhibits at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. Many historic homes located along Route 6A in Yarmouthport have been converted into inns. Significant sites in this area include the Captain Bangs House Museum, Taylor-Bray Farm and the Edward Gorey House. The town of Dennis includes the villages of East Dennis, West Dennis, Dennis proper and South Dennis. Some of The Cape’s best beaches can be found in this region. Plus, don’t miss the Cape Cod Museum of Art and the Cape Playhouse, the nation’s oldest professional summer theatre.
NANTUCKET Situated 30 miles south of Cape Cod, the island of Nantucket is breathtakingly beautiful and steeped in maritime history. It was the whaling capital of the world in the 1800s, with a fleet of whaling ships that brought prosperity to the community through the trade of oil used to fuel oil lamps. Visitor can learn more about the island’s “Golden Age” at the Nantucket Whaling Museum. Much of island’s historic character has been thoughtfully preserved. Centuryold elms shade cobblestone streets where pre-Civil War homes still stand. The island is also known for its trendy boutiques and gourmet eateries. Outside of the downtown, quiet residential roads wind through a rural landscape defined by grassy moors, bogs and marshes. 10

Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, located off the coast of Cape Cod, is the seasonal feeding grounds for several whale species including humpbacks (known for their dramatic leaps out of the water), finbacks, minke and pilot whales. Local whale watch companies offer unforgettable excursions to view these gentle giants in their natural habitat. In addition to whales, passengers occasionally see marine birds, dolphins, seals and other marine life. Experienced naturalists onboard the vessels educate passengers about different whale behaviors and can often identify specific animals by their fluke markings.

A golfer’s dream, Cape Cod offers 27 public, daily-fee golf courses and 15 private facilities run the gamut of skill levels, with courses that are pristine, scenic, challenging, and fun. Many don’t know that the Cape has its own “Fields of Dreams.” The region boasts the premier NCAA-sanctioned summer baseball league in the country: the Cape Cod Baseball League, with nearly 300 alumni now performing in Major League Baseball. The Cape Cod sports market has grown over the past few years, with the destination playing host to national events such as the NCAA Division III Baseball, Bando, Nations, International Theater on Ice, U.S. Figure Skating Nationals, and the most recent 2015 National Theatre on Ice Championship, the MA Squirt Tournament, the Falmouth Road Race, the Ragnar Relay Cape Cod Race, the Hyannis Marathon, Cape Cod Challenge Cup & New England Soccer Memorial Day Tournaments and Women’s Hockey East. Other classic Cape Cod events include the Cape Cod Senior Softball Classic and the famous Lobster Pot Hockey Tournament. This is just a sample of what Cape Cod offers to Sports Fans and Planners. The Cape Cod Chamber is a free source for all your planning needs. We can help with housing, site and fam tours, bid proposals, and special programs.

OUTER CAPE With vast stretches of unspoiled beaches, a thriving artist community and plenty of freshoff-the-boat seafood, the Outer Cape is filled with rustic romance. The region offers miles of biking and hiking trails, top-notch restaurants and historic sites. In Orleans, you can kayak through Town Cove or cheer on the Firebirds, the local Cape League baseball team. When visiting Eastham, be sure to stop in The Cape Cod National Seashore’s Salt Pond Visitor Center and check out the town’s beloved beacon, Nauset Light. Wellfleet offers spectacular ocean beaches, world-famous oysters and even a drive-in movie theater. Visit the Massachusetts Audubon Society’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary for a tranquil seaside walk. Provincetown is a lively community peppered with art galleries, inns, decadent eateries and eclectic shops. The best-known gay summer resort on the East Coast, its residents have included well-known artists, poets laureate, international journalists and playwrights.
Standing 252 feet tall, The Pilgrim Monument is the first thing you see when approaching Provincetown. The monument commemorates the arrival of the Mayflower on November 11, 1620.
LOWER CAPE
The iconic Chatham Light affords spectacular views of Lighthouse Beach and the churning ocean beyond.
If you think of the shape of Cape Cod like a flexed arm, the Lower Cape towns of Brewster, Harwich and Chatham are located around the elbow. Offering gorgeous ocean vistas, a landmark lighthouse and dozens of unique boutiques, Chatham attracts thousands of visitors each year. Popular summer events include Friday night Chatham Band concerts and Chatham Anglers Cape Cod Baseball League games. Once an enclave for sea captains, Brewster is known for its quaint inns, antique shops and art galleries. Nature lovers will appreciate visiting the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, which offers educational exhibits and seaside walking trails. The town of Harwich is made up of seven villages and features beautiful beaches on Nantucket Sound and a number of picturesque ponds. Harwich is known for its annual fall cranberry festival and is home to the Cape Cod Lavender Farm and First Crush Winery.
Provincetown’s Old Harbor Life-Saving Station Museum educates visitors on the history of the U.S. Lifesaving Service. Breeches buoy rescue demonstrations are conducted once a week throughout the summer.
