R E M E M B E R T O B R E AT H E ! LAPLAND is breathtaking in summer! You would be surprised to know how many various activities are offered here: hiking, mountain biking, trail running, swimming, fishing, climbing, berry picking, bird watching, jet skiing…the list goes on. One of the most fascinating activities one can experience in Lapland is bear watching. My dream of seeing brown bears in their natural habitat came true last summer, deep in the forests of Kuusamo. It still gives me goose bumps when I remember them playing in the forest. You can read about bear watching experience on pages 50-51. Lapland’s nature is rich with superfoods. Berry picking is a traditional activity here, and with Everyman’s right, locals and tourists can go pick berries anywhere they want, for free! Last summer, we’ve picked around 10 buckets of wild blueberries. We still have a wonderful supply of blueberries fresh from our freezer! Of course, you can also enjoy the benefits of Lappish berries in the easily consumable superfood products. Read more about them on pages 27–29.
Pyhä-Luosto pp. 52-53
Some of Finland’s largest and most beautiful national parks are situated in Lapland. Pyhä-Luosto is one of my favourites. At Pyhä you will see Finland’s largest ravine, Isokuru, and at Luosto you can visit an Amethyst mine and dig up your own amethyst stone. Find out more on pages 52-53. Pallas-Ylläs national park is another natural gem. There you will find beautiful rugged fells, amazing rivers and lakes, and great hiking trails. Mountain biking is a wonderful way to experience nature, and see some of Lapland’s best views. You can rent a mountain bike or fatbike with wide tyres, in almost any destination nowadays. Ylläs is particularly famous for its vast network of mountain biking trails and great landscapes. Get to know Ylläs by reading the article on pages 54-55. While doing all these wonderful activities, remember to breathe! According to the studies, Lapland has the cleanest air in the whole world. However, sometimes, I imagine, that won’t be easy, as Lapland’s stunning views will surely take your breath away!

LAPLAND NEWS
China became number one country for international tourism in Rovaniemi in 2018.
TOURISM REACHES NEW HEIGHTS IN LAPLAND TO U R I S M O N T H E R I S E
Tourism is experiencing tremendous growth in Lapland. More and more tourists from all around the world are heading for Lapland to experience the snowy winter, the Midnight Sun or the Northern Lights, to meet with Santa Claus, or to find a peaceful moment in nature. The number of registered overnight stays in Lapland was increased by 9% in 2018, reaching a total of 2.9 million. Compared to the previous year, the passenger traffic at Lapland’s five airports also grew by nearly 9%. The largest growth came from visitors from Australia, China, the Netherlands, Italy and Singapore. With a 16% share of all of the year’s visitors, December is the busiest month for tourism in Lapland. December is especially popular among British tourists. During the 2019 Christmas season, a total of 677 Christmas flights landed in Lapland, which is 89 flights or 15% more than in the previous year. The largest growth was at the Kuusamo airport where the number of Christmas charters was increased by 250%. Rovaniemi registered a total of 664,000 overnight stays in 2018, a 5% increase from 2017. During January-February 2019, the growth in overnight stays was 11.5%, compared to the previous year. 8

MORE FLIGHTS
During the 2018-2019 winter season, direct flights to Lapland were available from London, Manchester, Munich, Frankfurt, Berlin and Zurich, and they were operated by Norwegian, EasyJet, Finnair, Germania and Lufthansa. Direct flight connections are expected to keep on operating during the 2019-2020 winter season. On 5 December 2019, Turkish Airlines will also start direct flights from Istanbul to Rovaniemi. They will operate three times a week. B I G G E R A I R P O RT S
In response to the growth in the tourist flow, Finavia, the state-run company that operates Finland’s airports, has launched a new EUR 55 million development programme for Lapland airports. In 2017, the total number of passengers at Lapland airports reached 1.3 million. The new investment by Finavia will allow the Lapland airports to serve two million passengers a year. The Rovaniemi airport will be expanded by 75%. The expansion will increase the hourly capacity of the airport to five planes from the current three planes. Modern passenger facilities will be added to the baggage reclaim area, and the cafeteria area will be quadrupled in size.
The Kittilä Airport will gain an expansion of the terminal, a second café, and two additional taxiways and extra aircraft stands. The Ivalo airport will receive a new baggage reclaim hall and three more aircraft stands in addition to the four existing ones. Finavia’s development programme is to be finished by the 2019 Christmas season. M O R E H OT E L S
What the increased number of travellers also requires is more hotels and services. Some of the most recent projects include Santa Claus Holiday Village Suites on the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi. 24 apartments were completed for the 2018 Christmas season, and 30 more apartments are under construction. Nearby, the expansion of Nova Skyland, the first Chinese-owned hotel in Rovaniemi, is to be ready by 1 November 2019. The second phase of construction will bring in 39 apartments in a new curved building, in addition to the 14 existing apartments. With new hotel development projects and companies emerging on a regular basis, it is clear that the tourism industry is booming in Lapland. Naturally, the big question is whether the peak has already been reached, or if the growth streak will still be continuing over the next few years.

YLLÄS: THE OUTDOOR DESTINATION OF THE YEAR 2019
FINLAND REMAINS THE WORLDS’ HAPPIEST COUNTRY
IN MARCH 2019, Ylläs was awarded the title of Finland’s Outdoor Destination of the Year at Matka Nordic Travel Fair in Helsinki. Over 7,300 outdoors enthusiasts took part in a vote and Ylläs came first. The theme of this year’s fair was mountain biking routes. Ylläs, situated in the Kolari region, has over 200 km of summer routes and around 100 km of maintained winter routes. The Ylläs mountain biking routes take visitors amidst the breath-taking sceneries of the seven fells of Ylläs. These facts undoubtedly caught the attention of the outdoors enthusiasts who cast their votes for Ylläs. According to Janne-Juhani Haarma, managing director of Visit Ylläs, this is a welcome piece of news. “We have been building our mountain biking routes for several years now. We focus on year-round mountain biking activities, and we have routes even for beginners,” says JanneJuhani Haarma. The win also brought Ylläs the Matka Nordic Travel Fair price of €5000. According to Janne-Juhani Haarma, the sum will be used for the further development of Ylläs mountain biking trails. More info about mountain biking in Ylläs: www.yllas.fi.
FINLAND remains the happiest country in the world in 2019, according to the World Happiness report by the United Nations. For the second consecutive year, Finland beat 155 other nations in the world. According to the report, Finland was significantly ahead of the other top ten list countries. Scandinavian countries topped the list in this year’s survey with Denmark in 2nd place, Norway in 3rd, and Iceland in 4th. The first non-European country on the list was New Zealand in 6th place. The World Happiness report was first published in 2012. The report is based on survey data from three preceding years about the perceived quality of people’s lives. Some of the factors measured in the report were gross domestic product per capita, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom to make life choices, and absence of corruption. Finland scored high in social support, perceived freedom, and absence of corruption. In 2017, Finland launched a basic universal income experiment in which 2000 unemployed people received €560 per month tax free. The experiment failed to increase employment among the participants. However, it did increase the participants’ feeling of happiness.

M U S E U M C A R D G I V E S AC C E S S TO L A P L A N D ’ S M U S E U M S THE MUSEUM CARD enables tourists to visit all of Finland’s museums with one ticket. Since its launch in 2015, the Museum Card has increased the number of museum visits by one third. This growth is continuing for the third consecutive year. According to the Finnish National Board of Antiquities, there were over 7.1 million visits to the country’s museums in 2018. The number of visits has also increased in Rovaniemi museums. Lapland’s most visited museum in 2018 was Korundi House of Culture. One of its highlights is Rovaniemi Art museum. Arktikum Museum & Science Centre held the second place, and on the third place was Siida, a museum dedicated to Sami culture in Inari. According to Curator Riitta Kuusikko, the exhibitions at Rovaniemi Art Museum
are equally popular with tourists and locals. “I can strongly recommend visiting our Place of Origin exhibition about Alaskan contemporary art. The Museum Card can be used as a ticket to the exhibition,” says Riitta Kuusikko. In 2019, the price of the Museum Card is 69€. It gives you access to 280 museums all around the country, including The Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma and Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki. In Lapland, you can use the Museum Card to visit 16 museums. In Rovaniemi, the card is also accepted at Science Centre Pilke, the Rovaniemi Local Heritage Museum and the Forestry Museum of Lapland. The Gold Museum of Tankavaara some 230 km from Rovaniemi is another interesting museum worth a visit.
You can purchase the Museum Card at any of the museums or online. museot.fi

Panoramic windows inside Arctic Fox Igloos provide guests with beautiful views of the Arctic nature.
A R C T I C F O X I G L O O S AT T R A C T L U X U R Y T R AV E L L E R S T O R A N U A AT THE END OF 2018, twenty highly modern glass igloos have appeared on the shore of Lake Ranuanjärvi, not very far from the small village of Ranua. The igloos offer their visitors panoramic views of the untouched Lappish nature, night skies and, occasionally, some beautiful northern lights. Even in summer time, the igloos allow guests to admire the beauty of the lake scenery and enjoy the colours of the bright Arctic nights. The whole region of Ranua counts less than 4,000 permanent inhabitants, and it relies heavily on tourism. In 1983, the municipality of Ranua opened a wildlife park which, over the years, has grown to become one of Lapland’s most popular attractions. The Ranua Wildlife Park boasts over 50 species of various Arctic animals, including polar bears, brown bears, wolves, lynxes, wolverines, musk oxen, owls, eagles, and many more. As the amount of tourists is growing in Lapland, so does the level of comfort and services that some customers are expecting. Arctic Fox Igloos follow this latest trend of providing more exclusive and luxurious accommodation for the more demanding customer. According to General Manager Tommi Hinno, their first season went extremely well. “Winter was a major success for us, but we are very excited about summer and autumn too. Our igloo village is unique, as it is located on the shore of a lake,” says Hinno.
Compared to similar-type accommodation in the region, the igloos are also much larger and provide more room and comfortable surroundings inside. Each igloo boasts a sauna, mini-kitchenette and a large bedroom with king-size beds. The walls of the bedroom and the lounge area are made of three-layered thermal glass that reaches from the ceiling to the floor. The igloos are also equipped with airconditioning, enabling a comfortable stay in the summer heat. The area where the igloos are located also has a beach for swimming. Such luxurious surroundings and celebrity treatment, coupled with a visit to Ranua Wildlife Park to see the polar bears might just be a very romantic and unique way to spend a vacation in Lapland! Arctic Fox Igloos is open throughout the year, providing the stunning views of Lapland’s changing seasons. During the summer months, the nights in Lapland are lit with vibrant colours of the Midnight Sun. As the nights get darker in August and September, the visitors will again be able to see the starry skies, and the northern lights. During the autumn months, the aurora activity is statistically higher, and you are able to capture the reflection of the northern lights in the open water. As summer and autumn are not high seasons, the igloo village offers moderate pricing, equivalent to hotel prices. Book at: arcticfoxigloos.com ALL ABOUT LAPLAND | SUMMER 2019

A SHOPPING CENTRE AT THE HEART OF ROVANIEMI
ampokeskus is a shopping centre at the heart of Rovaniemi city. The main entrance opens to Lordi’s Square, named after the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest winner Mr. Lordi. The story turned full circle this spring, as Mr. Lordi himself, born and raised in Rovaniemi, hosted an exhibition displaying his life’s work at Sampokeskus. Originally opened in 1990, Sampokeskus has seen many events hosted either inside or outside the centre. With such long history comes a special affection with the locals. Situated right in the middle of the city centre, Sampokeskus is the place to shop, enjoy a meal and meet the city folk. Visitors will certainly appreciate the Rovaniemi Tourist Information Office. It is easy to find your way here, as there are red street signs all the way from the Railway Station to the Lordi’s Square. The staff of Rovaniemi tourist office will be happy to help you with any questions you might have about what to see and do in Rovaniemi. Inside Sampokeskus you will find both local and international brands in about 30 shops. Sampokeskus features several comprehensive fashion shops, including MODA, Tredonne, Gina Tricot, Jack & Jones and more. You can also find a very well stocked pharmacy and the only cinema in the city. If you are looking for local Lappish items, check out Pentik for ceramics and textiles, Paapero for children’s clothing, or Attirance and Tiinuska for handicrafts and gifts. Shopping can be sustainable too! There are two basic tips that can help us change the world. First: “less is more”! Invest in clothes and accessories that you really need, and plan to use for a long time. Second tip is to support responsible, ecoconscious brands. Choose products that are nature-friendly or made from recycled materials, like Ecoalf shoes that are made from recycled plastic bottles, or amazingly durable clothes that are produced from hemp.
What do you know about Finnish design? From the classics like Arabia, Iittala and Marimekko, to the newcomers like Uhana and Balmuir, it tends to be functional and always looks contemporary, no matter when it was created. Makia is one the new brands that gained a world-wide appeal, all thanks to its ageless style and subtle colour palette. Another example is Suunto who makes high-quality sport watches for outdoor enthusiasts.

Wooden materials are trendy now too. At Pilke Shop you will find plenty of wooden products, such as earrings and necklaces crafted from Finnish birch plywood. D E S I G N YO U R OW N K N I F E ! WOULD YOU LIKE to design your own knife? Marttiini knife factory in Rovaniemi now offers such a wonderful option for all knife lovers. Marttiini have been operating in Rovaniemi since 1928, and they know a thing or two about knives! The service is called ‘Marttiini Custom’ and is now available through the company’s website. There you are presented with several options regarding the material of the handle, back and front ferrules, as well as blade materials. Some of the more luxurious options, such as the handle made out of reindeer horn, multilayered Damascus steel, and bronze ferrules depicting Lappish animals will set you back several hundreds of euros. But hey, such knife, hand made in Lapland, can be considered a real piece of art!
For those who want a knife that “just works”, Marttiini offers plenty of choices. Classic Marttiini Lynx knife that has been in production since 1928 is always a great tool. Another option is Lappish Leuku knife, originally designed by the Sami people, and popularized by Marttiini. There are also various modern knife models with stainless steel and rubber handles that won’t slip in your hand. If you are planning to go hiking in Lapland, some sort of a sharp tool is a must, and Marttiini is certainly a top choice! MOODAG JEWELLERY was started by designer Katja Lettinen in 2013 in Inari, Lapland. Katja seeks for inspiration in the ever-changing nature of her home region: in each piece of Moodag jewellery one can see the beauty and serenity of the North. “The name Moodag comes from the word ‘mood’ and the chemical symbol for silver, ‘Ag’. I think of my creative process as being in a “silver mood”, says Katja. While silver is the main element for her jewellery, Katja combines it with the materials from her environment, such as stones that she finds, reindeer antler, horn and leather. She creates contemporary wearables using the age-old techniques such as metal carving. In Rovaniemi, you can find Moodag jewellery at Arktikum Shop and Korundi House of Culture.

H O R N WO R K HORNWORK is a workshop ran by a family couple, Irene and Ari Kangasniemi. Together, they have decades of experience with handicrafts. Ari produces traditional ‘kuksa’ cups out of wood, and collector’s knives with reindeer horn handles. Irene makes jewellery from wood and reindeer horn. She also produces reindeer skin bags, and even the shaman drums. You can buy Hornwork design items at the Arktikum Shop in Rovaniemi or Christmas House Shop at the Santa Claus Village. You can also book a visit to the workshop, and learn how to make Lappish handicrafts yourself, together with Irene and Ari. hornwork.fi
TA I G A KO R U J E W E L L E RY TAIGAKORU goldsmith’s workshop was founded in 1981 in Rovaniemi by a talented jeweller Juha Janger. The name of the workshop stands for “Jewel from Taiga”. That is not a coincidence, as Taigakoru is known for its original style influenced by the Lappish nature and animals. Their collection includes the Northern Lights series, made in the shape of aurora arches, and the impressive Lapland Nature series with figures of animals, such as the reindeer, bear and fox. Taigakoru also makes the astonishing rings with gold nuggets found at the river of Lemmenjoki in Lapland. Even though they are produced in small series, each item is unique, thanks to the irregular shape of the gold nuggets. The latest addition to the collection are the gold nugget pendants, earrings and crosses.
One of Taigakoru’s most mysterious jewellery series is called the Shaman Drum. A shaman was a person regarded as a messenger between the human world and the spirit world by the indigenous Sami people. During the ritual, a shaman would enter a state of trance by beating the drum. The drums were decorated with symbols, each one having a particular meaning: the Sun, the gods of Akka and Ukko, and Arctic animals, such as the bear, salmon, beaver and wolf. These symbols have inspired Juha Janger to produce the Shaman Drum collection. It is available in brooches, pendants and earrings in both silver and gold. You can buy Taigakoru products at the factory shops in Shopping centre Rinteenkulma and Santa Claus Village. taigakoru.fi

STUDY IN LAPLAND
H E A LT H C A R E S T U D I E S I N K E M I ANNIINA PÖYSKÖ is a first-year nursing student at Lapland University of Applied Sciences in the city of Kemi. As a Finn, she could have sent an application to any of the Finnish-taught degrees. However, she applied for the English-taught nursing programme. The reason behind this was her love for travel: Anniina had already completed a year-long journey around the world and visited Indonesia, Australia, Thailand, South America, New Zealand and the USA. According to Anniina, health care is her calling. “The desire to help other people is what drives me, and doing that can be a positive challenge for me,” says Anniina. In August 2018, Anniina started her second year of studying in the Bachelor of Health Care Degree Programme. The studies will last for 3.5 years. The degree is accessible to foreign students as well, but those who come from outside of the EU are required to pay tuition fees. Anniina’s class is quite small, only 11 students. Apart from Anniina, the students come from the Philippines, Nepal, various African countries and Spain. Anniina says that her classmates are all incredible people, and their group is very tight-knit. Nursing studies consist of courses that vary from professional ethics to resuscitation. There is a lot of room for practical training, and the school usually helps the students in finding suitable training places. All the courses in the programme are taught in English, with the exception of Finnish for foreigners courses. All teachers are Finnish, but they are proficient in English. According to

Anniina, there is a benefit in studying in a small group: the students get a chance to take everything they are taught and try it out in practice, such as taking blood tests or insert catheters. Their classrooms are equipped with the latest technology, such as medical teaching dolls. Although studying in Kemi, Anniina still lives in her home city of Oulu that is over 100 km away. In order to get to school in time, she sometimes needs to get up at 5 am to catch a bus to Kemi. Her fellow students love Finland and are looking forward to staying and working here. Finland indeed has a deficit of labour force in the health care sector, and well-trained health care professionals are very welcome here.

RESTAURANTS: ROVANIEMI RESTAURANT TSAR is the latest addition to Rovaniemi’s already vibrant culinary scene. As the name suggests, the restaurant offers you the best treats of Russian cuisine right at the heart of Lapland’s capital. A selection of Russian appetisers (or ‘zakuski’) is a perfect way to kick-star your feast! You will sample such Russian delicacies as smoked herring, beetroot-cold-smoked salmon, reindeer tartar & liver, sliced pork, pickles, honey and more. Another great starter is blinis with black caviar or Finnish white fish roe, sour cream, onion and sliced pickles. Mmm…yummie! For your main dish, Tsar’s spiced beef (picture) is a mouthwatering option. Sizzling sirloin with potatoes, beetroots, and Russian salads will definitely take care of hunger. Ivan’s meat skewer is another tempting choice! If you want to try something exotic, flambéestyle bear meat from local hunters is definitely worth trying! To finish your feast, go for Tsar’s Baked Alaska with salty caramel and berries. Na zdorovje! Enjoy your meal!

NILI is one of Rovaniemi’s top restaurants. Here you can taste all of the amazing treats of the Lappish cuisine, such as the reindeer meat, fish, game, root vegetables, mushrooms and berries. For starters, choose Rovaniemi Market. It is a huge wooden platter filled with wonderful appetizers: cooked and marinated reindeer meat, salmon, vendace, berries and Lappish cheese. For your main course, a classic dish to try is sautéed reindeer, served with mashed potatoes, pickles and lingonberry jam. For a more modern approach, go for reindeer prepared in two ways. Equally great is Nili’s selection of local fish dishes. Tasting dishes with bear meat will be an unforgettable experience. Granted, it is not a cheap treat, but the supply of bear meat is limited and its availability depends on the luck of the local hunters. Bear meat is gamey and very rich in flavour!

HIMO HIMO is a true oasis of Asian flavours in the heart of Rovaniemi. Its name translates from Finnish as “passion” or “lust”, and Himo is passionate about Asian cuisines. For starters, go for the hot dim sums. They are available in various flavours: pork, shrimp, vegetarian or reindeer. Main course is always a hard choice, as there are so many tempting options! Hot ramen soup with reindeer always works for me, however, recently, I have also discovered Himo’s Vietnamese pho soup. You can’t go wrong with hot wok with noodles or fried rice, topped with chicken, pork or reindeer, and if you want to try something special, go for the bear option. Himo is known of its amazing sushi which are said to be some of the best in whole Finland. At Himo you are able to taste something really local, such as the reindeer sushi. My favourite flavour is spicy reindeer uramaki with chilli sauce. Yum!

RAKAS RESTAURANT RAKAS (“beloved one” in Finnish) is situated at the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel near SantaPark. The restaurant offers some modern & refined Scandinavian cuisine and welcomes both guests of the hotel and visitors of Rovaniemi city. The head chef of the restaurant, Jonathan Guppy, is an Englishman who moved to Rovaniemi eight years ago. According to Jonathan, in Rakas they try to use as much local ingredients as they can. Instead of olive oil, for example, they use juniper oil and spruce oil, instead of lemon — spruce shoots that have the same acidic flavour profile. “Seasonality and locality play a big part in our kitchen”, says Guppy. “We use Nordic style of cooking focusing on ingredients from our area.” One of the amazing local ingredients that you can try here is reindeer meat. It can be cooked in various ways. Fillet, for example, is served rare, and neck can be slow-cooked for two days straight. There are also many other seasonal ingredients such as fresh local fish, as well as mushrooms and berries that are foraged in the forest by Jonathan and his staff.

ARCTIC SUPERFOODS Taste the goodness of Lappish forests in Wilder snack bars! FORESTS OF LAPLAND are an amazing source of superfoods. Grown under the light of the Midnight Sun, the plants here possess some amazing properties and are rich with vitamins and antioxidants. Lappish wonderful berries, such as wild blueberry, lingonberry and cloudberry are foraged by the locals every season.
Every wild blueberry snack bar contains 52 blueberries!
Arctic Superfoods company was started in 2016 by chef Jari Kurtti out of desire to bring these natural ingredients to the world. Jari, also known as “The Flavour Master”, developed their products with his wife Sanna in their home kitchen in Levi, Lapland. They gathered the ingredients in the wild forests in their home area which is known to be the purest in the whole world. The result was ‘Wilder’, a series of easily consumable snack bars, filled with Lappish berries and herbs. Wilder snack bars come in various flavours: Wild Blueberry & Birch Leaf; Lingonberry, Cranberry & Nettle; Sea Buckthorn & Spruce Sprout and Wild Blueberry & Dark Chocolate snack bar. The latest additions to the ‘Wilder’ family are Lingonberry & White Chocolate, and Sea Buckthorn & Milk Chocolate.
Wild blueberry is Jari’s favourite ingredient. Wild blueberries are very rich with A and B-vitamins, flavonoids and fibre. “Every Wild Blueberry & Birch Leaf bar contains 52 blueberries, and there are 38 blueberries in each Wild Blueberry & Dark Chocolate bar”, says Jari Kurtti. Wilder snack bars are a natural way to replenish your energy. They will give you a needed boost in the middle of your hiking or biking trip, sports activities, or even a coffee break at the office. The snack bars are available in shops around Lapland, and are delivered worldwide.

F L AVO U R E D BY T H E MIDNIGHT SUN DID YOU KNOW THAT NORTHERN LAPLAND IS A UNIQUE GROWTH ENVIRONMENT FOR PLANTS? THE SUN IS SHINING 24/7, ENRICHING HERBS AND BERRIES WITH INTENSIVE AROMAS AND POWERFUL NATURAL SUBSTANCES. P O S I T I V E ST R E S S LOA D
What comes to mind when you think about the word ”Arctic”? Do you think “cold, dark and harsh”? You would be right about that, but there is more to the story. In contrast to dark and cold winters, Arctic summers are filled with daylight, 24 hours a day. Such amount of light allows vegetation to grow non-stop throughout the summer months. Think of yourself working around the clock, day in, day out. Wouldn’t it be rather stressful? It certainly is for the Arctic herbs and berries. However, it’s this positive stress that enriches them with powerful compounds. This is an effect that cannot be artificially recreated outside their natural habitat in the north. For example, Angelica archangelica that grows in Central Europe is just a pale ghost compared to one that grows in the arctic conditions of Finnish Lapland. Compare this to trying to grow a mango on the Arctic Circle. It wouldn’t taste half as good as a mango grown in tropical surroundings. T H E C L E A N E ST C O R N E R O F T H E WO R L D
Lapland is the purest, least unpolluted region in the whole world. According to World Health Organization studies, the cleanest air in the world is found in the municipality of Muonio, North Lapland. It is no wonder that the Arctic herbs and berries here are as pure as any plants can get. You can pick wild blueberries and lingonberries in the forest and eat them immediately, without washing. Of course, berries that grow near a highway should be left untouched. Thanks to such pure and clean conditions, the Arctic natural goodies taste extra yummy!

Rhodiola rosea (also known as roseroot) is a beautiful, yellow-flowered herb with a huge root that smells like roses. Other than that, it has nothing to do with roses! Despite its beauty, it is a strong herb that has been used for thousands of years. Back in the day, the Vikings conquered the rough seas with the help of this Arctic power herb. Roseroot is also known as Ginseng of the North, which boosts you both physically and mentally. It is a strong adaptogen that balances body and mind and helps you to fight back stress. It refreshes you when you are worn out, and it calms you down when you are wired.
Angelica archangelica, the native herb of Lapland, is one of the strongest herbs in the Arctic. The whole herb is edible, but the real power is in its root. The Sami people, native to Finnish Lapland, regarded Angelica as a holy herb that prevented diseases. The Sami ate Angelica roots after the long and harsh Arctic winters to give their bodies a needed boost. Thanks to its antibacterial properties, Angelica used to be of great help in fighting scurvy, the plague or the Spanish flu. Even a small portion of Angelica extract every day helps to strengthen your immune system.
Spruce sprouts are the first forest treats that appear after winter. With permission from landowners, spruce sprouts are hand-picked from the Arctic forests. In the old days, spruce sprouts were used to cure many diseases. Even today, spruce sprout powder is a great help in boosting your immune system. It’s a Nordic equivalent to matcha. In addition to Vitamin C and antioxidants, spruce sprouts have antibacterial properties. They reduce inflammation in the body and can also be used for dental hygiene. Add spruce sprout powder to your morning yogurt, sprinkle it on a salad or make a spruce sprout latte!
M O R E E N E RGY FO R YO U R DAY
Back in the day, herbs were widely used for medicinal purposes. However, in the modern world we often forget how wise Nature is. The root of Rhodiola rosea looks just like the human brain, and it’s good for your brain, too. It keeps you focused and opens your eyes in two seconds in the morning. Angelica archangelica is a ginger-like herb with antibacterial properties. If you have a sore throat, Angelica will certainly bring you some relief. If you love greens, spruce sprouts are your top choice! Spruce sprouts and honey have traditionally been used for relief in children’s ear infections. And even if you don’t care for their healing properties, only the smell and aroma of spruce sprout powder will teleport you into the middle of the forest! Wild blueberries and lingonberries are the most harvested berries in Finland. Just about every child learns to eat them at a very young age, and berries are a natural part of the everyday diet in many Finnish homes. The Lappish nature works its magic inside the berries, too: wild blueberries in Lapland contain more health-boosting flavonoids than berries that grow further south. Based in the village of Narkaus near the Arctic Circle, Arctic Warriors pack these Lappish power herbs and berries into easyto-use products for you to enjoy and get more out of your day. Roseroot and Angelica are grown at our own farm. They are harvested in autumn and hand-washed before the delicate extracting process. Spruce sprouts are collected by hand from the organically certified forests of Lapland in mid-June. Thanks to freeze-drying, spruce sprouts do not lose their intensive colour and aroma. Blueberries and lingonberries are hand-picked from the wilds and dried in mild temperature to preserve their quality. All products are 100 % natural with no added nonsense. ALL ABOUT LAPLAND | SUMMER 2019
In recent years, the Arctic has been experiencing some dramatic changes. The most apparent is, of course, the climate change, but the cultural and socioeconomic aspects of life in the Arctic region are also changing. The Arctic is populated by various indigenous peoples, such as the Inuit and the Nenets. At the Arktikum’s Arctic Centre, you can find out about how the livelihoods of these peoples have been altered in the modern age. The oldest known settlement in Rovaniemi is dated around 6000 BC. The Regional Museum of Lapland is a great place to find out about the livelihoods of ancient hunters and reindeer herders. At the end of the 19th century, Rovaniemi had become a centre of trade in Lapland. The museum offers you a glimpse into this wonderful era. Check also the Arktikum Shop, as it offers many of the amazing handicrafts items from reindeer horn, skin, and wood. Pohjoisranta 4 , Rovaniemi. Opening hours: Tue-Sun 10–18. It is one of the few brick buildings to survive WWII. In 1986, it became Rovaniemi Art Museum. Today, the museum holds Finland’s most significant collection of contemporary art with over 3,000 works. Most of the works were donated to the museum by The Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation. The items on display will offer you a great insight into modern art in Finland. The Museum also presents temporary exhibitions, such as Prima Vista, inspired by the Finnish nature. Korundi is the home of Lapland Chamber Orchestra. summer in Lapland!
SUMMER IN LAPLAND IS VIBRANT AND BEAUTIFUL. THERE ARE SO MANY FUN ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO HERE, UNDER THE MIDNIGHT SUN. WE’VE ASKED SANTA CLAUS, LAPLAND’S MOST FAMOUS DWELLER, TO TELL US HOW HE SPENDS HIS SUMMER AND TO SHARE HIS BEST LAPLAND TIPS! 36
ALL ABOUT LAPLAND | SUMMER 2019
MIDNIGHT SUN IN THE MIDDLE OF SUMMER, there is no night in Lapland. After a long dark winter, it is a real pleasure to feel the sunshine around the clock! Nature is waking up, and the forests are bathing in a sea of fresh green leaves. Santa and his elves just love being out in the wilderness. In summer, one of their favourite chores is to pick wild blueberries in the forest. Under the midnight sun, the berries collect so much natural energy that they become real superfood. Besides, blueberries make the best pie in the world! You too can pick berries in any Lappish forest and enjoy their amazing taste, for free! In addition to wild blueberries, look for cloudberries and lingonberries. The berry season lasts from late July to September. In the evening, climb on a hill, or go to a lakeshore, and look north. The amazing colours of the midnight sun brighten up the skies all night long!
S U M M E R AC T I V I T I E S WITH SO MUCH SUN shining around the clock, there is plenty of time to try all different summer activities: walking, hiking, biking, fishing, swimming in the river, rafting, canoeing, playing hide-and-seek in the forest, or even making traditional cone cows out of spruce cones! One particularly great way to enjoy Lappish nature is to have a picnic in the forest. Santa adores hiking and loves to spend time relaxing in the outdoors. According to him, nothing beats the taste of a cup of coffee cooked on the open fire! You will find plenty of lean-tos called “laavu” in the forest, where you can find a supply of firewood and light a campfire, for free! Another great summer chore is to check on Santa’s reindeer. Summer is their vacation time and they are spending it relaxing in the forest. You can visit them and feed them lichen. In winter, they will need this energy to pull Santa’s sleigh which is filled with gifts!
A RC T I C C I RC L E A LONG TIME AGO, Santa decided to build his office on the Arctic Circle. The reason behind his choice is not known to us, but some say this is because the Arctic Circle is a gateway to the mysterious world of fairy tales and stories. Others claim that crossing the Arctic Circle will make you younger, and Santa indeed is at least a few hundred years old. In any case, visiting this place will be a fun experience for everyone! The spirit of Christmas is always present here, on the Arctic Circle. Santa is here every day of the year, eager to meet you. Come say hello to the old fellow, and be prepared to tell him if you have been a good boy or a girl this year! The Arctic Circle is also the home of Santa’s elves. Pay a visit to the mail elves at Santa’s Post Office. There you can write your Christmas postcards and leave them with the elves who will mail them for you next Christmas! Worshippers of the
MIDNIGHT SUN
SEEING THE MIDNIGHT SUN IS LITERALLY A HIGHLIGHT OF A SUMMER TRIP TO LAPLAND. ITS BEATIFUL LIGHT MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO EXPLORE LAPPISH NATURE AROUND THE CLOCK, AND MAKE STUNNING PHOTOS!
M
idnight Sun is one of the top reasons to visit Lapland in summer. Its beauty is something to experience at least once in a lifetime. Midnight Sun is caused by the tilt in the Earth’s axis relative to its orbit. It occurs in the areas north of the Arctic Circle or south of the Antarctic Circle. Most of the Finnish Lapland is situated north of the Arctic Circle, but you can also experience the Midnight Sun in areas slightly south from it, thanks to atmospheric refraction and the fact that the sun is a huge disc. In summer, the nights in Lapland are white for several months. For a period of several weeks the sun does not set below the horizon. After the vernal equinox in March, the nights start to shorten quickly in Lapland. By the end of April, they are already just twilights rather than dark nights, and from early May, it’s just bright throughout the day and night. The Midnight Sun period 44
ALL ABOUT LAPLAND | SUMMER 2019
starts in the most northern parts of Finnish Lapland in midMay. The effect of the Midnight Sun is the stronger the closer you get to the North Pole. Lapland’s capital, Rovaniemi, is situated right on the Arctic Circle. The Midnight Sun can be seen here from 7 June until 7 July. However, in north Lapland the sun stays above the horizon for 70 days, until the end of July. That’s almost the whole length of the Arctic summer! The “price” for such abundance of light in the summer is, of course, darkness during the winter night. In Finnish, the period when the days are extremely short is called “kaamos”. At least one in every ten Finns experiences some kind of light deprivation symptoms, such as fatigue, lack of motivation or even depression. Bright summer nights, on the other hand, can help shake off the “winter blues” and fill you with that solar energy! Indeed, in summer, you need much less sleep to be revived, and you can explore Lapland’s wonderful terrains around the clock.
Midsummer, celebrated in Finland on the Saturday between 20 and 26 June, is the highlight of the summer season. Originally, it was a pagan celebration, a tribute to Ukko, the Finnish god of thunder. On Midsummer Eve, people flock away from the cities to stay at their summer cottages or with relatives who live in the countryside. Around midnight, bonfires are lit all around the country, at lakesides. Taking a sauna bath, or having a swim in the lake are some of the “must-do” things for Finns during Midsummer. Of course, getting a drink or two is also part of the festivities. We hope that you can make the most of the Midnight Sun!
TIPS FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS 1. CLIMB HIGH
You will get the best view of the Midnight Sun if you climb high! Lappish fells are perfect for Midnight Sun gazing, and they are easy to climb. In Rovaniemi, go to the top of the Ounasvaara fell which is only a 5-min drive or 20-min walk from the city centre. The big fells in northern Lapland, such as Levi, Ylläs, Pallas or Saariselkä, are perfect for taking photos. Another option is to find a big lake and stay on its southern shore, as the sun will be in the north at night.
2 . YO U H AV E THE WHOLE NIGHT!
“The golden hour” is a term used to describe the most magical light of sunrise or sunset. In Lapland, the “golden hour” actually means at least 3–4 hours! The light is at its best from 11PM to 3AM, when the yellow disc of the sun is gently sweeping over the horizon. So, you can actually spend the whole night outdoors, hiking or mountain biking, with no rush to take your best photos. And don’t worry about sleeping late, as with all that light therapy going on, you will need much less sleep to recover your strength.

3. ZOOM IN – ZOOM OUT
Lapland provides an astonishing variety of landscape to be captured with a camera. Different lenses and focal lengths, such as wide angle or telephoto, enable you to be more creative with your shots. Snap a picture of the whole landscape with a wide angle, or hunt for some details with a zoom lens. Or, launch your drone and capture everything from the bird’s eye view.
4. NOT JUST THE SUN
The Midnight Sun is certainly beautiful, but don’t be limited to that. Take notice of some of the details around you. Rocks and trees can be used for nice silhouettes or a foreground interest. Capture your friend doing something, or use yourself as a model.
5. GRAB A TRIPOD
Tripod is a handy tool in Midnight Sun photography, especially if you travel on your own and want to be present in your shots. It is also necessary for capturing the amazing time lapses or videos of the Midnight Sun passing over the horizon. Good luck!

Arctic Summer FOR NATURE LOVERS
T E X T & P H O T O S B Y: T E R H I T U O V I N E N
SUMMER IN LAPLAND IS WILD, UNPREDICTABLE, ENCHANTING, SOMETIMES HARSH BUT ALWAYS BEAUTIFUL. JUST LIKE NATURE ITSELF. THE CONTRAST BETWEEN MIDSUMMER AND MIDWINTER, THE NIGHTLESS NIGHT AND THE POLAR NIGHT, IS HUGE. IF WINTER IS BLUE AND QUIET, SUMMER IS GREEN AND FULL OF LIFE — A DREAM SEASON FOR A NATURE LOVER AND ONE OF THE BEST TIMES TO EXPLORE LAPLAND’S VAST WILDERNESS.

T E R H I T U OV I N E N LAPLAND’S NATURE is stunning year-
round. Autumn is full of different hues, winter is soft and pastel-coloured, spring is vibrant and fresh, but summer in Lapland is one of a kind; the sun hangs above the horizon all day and night, and nature is full of energy. As a photographer and an active nature enthusiast, I spend time outdoors in every season, but I find myself in nature in summer more than any other time of year. W H AT I S T H E A RC T I C S U M M E R ?
One of the most defying things of the Arctic summer is the Midnight Sun, the period when the sun doesn’t set at all. The beginning of the summer is a time for new life. Nature is fresh and clean after the spring floods. Animals welcome their newborns into the world, and plants are bright green. Still, the few white spots atop the fells are a reminder that the landscape was full of snow only a short time ago. Look closely, if you are lucky you may spot some delicious newly risen willowherbs. Cook them like asparagus, and I swear you won’t be disappointed! Around midsummer, flowers start to bloom, and the bugs are buzzing like they are in a constant hurry. Nature doesn’t get any fuller and livelier than this here up north. Animals concentrate on taking
care of their offspring, and berries get juicy and delicious. When summer nears its end, nature fills up with the superfoods. The first sunsets after the Nightless Night take your breath away. These gloomy, purple nights are so peaceful and quiet. Sitting by the campfire drinking hot tea while watching the sun go down makes one happy for sure. The Northern Lights start their dance slowly as the Arctic sky gets darker, and all of the sudden you notice that the leaves are turning yellow and orange. Autumn is near. W H E R E TO G O & W H AT TO D O ?
Lapland is vast and packed with interesting nature destinations and landscapes; fells calling you to climb, endless forests, deep blue lakes and rivers cutting up the sceneries. A good way to start your summer nature exploration is to visit Lapland’s many national parks. Did you know that Lapland is home to the three largest national parks in Finland: Lemmenjoki National Park, Urho Kekkonen National Park and PallasYllästunturi National Park which is also the most popular in Finland. National parks have routes for hikers of every skill level, campfire places and wilderness huts. Photography takes up most of my time during the summer. My favourite time to

take photos is the early morning when nature is waking up for a new day, and late evening when the sun is shining just above the horizon. When the sky is clear, no matter where you point your camera, you find something beautiful to capture. When the weather is cloudy, you’ll always find some interesting details to shoot. I also love road trips. In Lapland, nature starts right from the shoulder of the road. My favourite direction is North, and driving all the way to northern Norway is a must-do summer tradition. Fishing, hiking, paddling, cycling – these are all great ways to explore nature. For me the most important thing is simply to be present in nature. Breathing in the energy of summer, soaking in the peace of nature without any hurry is something that I always long for. I truly believe that when you respect nature and give it your time, it gives you something back.

EARLY MORNING MIST is my favorite subject to photograph. Spend a night outdoors or wake up really early and hope for the best. Choose a clear, cool night and a place where water is nearby. When the sun starts to climb higher in the sky and the rays of light hit the mist, I bet that is one of the most beautiful things you’ll ever see.
CLIMBING TO THE TOP OF THE FELL is a classic way to enjoy the magic of the Midnight Sun. Hike to the Otsamo fell near Inari or Kiilopää fell in Urho Kekkonen National Park and enjoy the endless panorama views. If you are lucky, during the hike, you’ll spot some Arctic fauna like rock ptarmigans or lemmings.
GO PICK YOUR OWN CLOUDBERRIES. Cloudberries get locals crazy. For a while the only thing that people are talking about is cloudberries. Is it a good year? How many kilos did you pick yesterday? Cloudberry is the queen of berries, a beautiful orange ball full of vitamins. Picking these berries from a wet marsh is not the easiest job, but it’s definitely worth it!

I
t’s the beginning of June in Kuusamo, Northern Finland. We are driving east through the deep forest, and the farther we go, the narrower is the road. We are nearing the Russian border. We are already awaited at our designated meeting point. A few other guests are here, and also our guide, Pekka Veteläinen, the Chief of Karhu-Kuusamo Ltd. There is suspense in the air, and even a touch of fear: there might be brown bears just around the corner! We follow our guides on a narrow forest path towards the bear-watching hut. We walk slowly, in silence. Prior to the tour, we were instructed not to wear any perfume or mosquito repellents, as smell is the bear’s sharpest sense. The hut is situated just 2 km away from the Russian border, 500 metres from the line of demarcation patrolled by the border guards. Around 90% of the bears that can be seen in this area come from Russia. On the Russian side of the border there is the Paanajärvi National Park. People don’t often visit it, and there are no permanent dwellings in its vicinity. This presents a calm and untouched habitat for bears who frequently also wander to the Finnish side. The guides close the door of the hut, and no one is allowed to leave or enter until the tour ends. The wooden hut is very simple but well-equipped for wildlife-watching. There is a row of loopholes for cameras in the wall, with seats underneath them. The hut has large panoramic windows overlooking a wide drying pond. While we wait for bears to appear, Pekka tells us about these fascinating animals. The brown bear is the largest carnivore in Europe, and it can weigh up to 300 kg. Bears are active from March-April until October. Before bears start their winter hibernation, they need to gain as much weight as possible. Their diet includes lots of plants, berries, mushrooms, and spruce sprouts. In autumn, bears also hunt reindeer and other animals. If no other food source is available, they might resort to scavenging or eating ants and maggots.
Pekka launched bear-watching tours with his partner Tuomo in 2007. According to Pekka, each bear is an individual, just as we humans are. He says that they are pretty easy to tell apart, and he knows most of the bears that frequent the hut. He even calls them his friends. There are two bears that have been visiting Pekka’s hut from the very first season. A female bear that they call “Iida” was only three then. She has had babies in 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2017, three cubs in each litter. To the delight of the guests, she used to bring them near the hut regularly. Another bear, a male called Mörkö (“boogeyman” in Finnish), was five when the hut was built. Now, aged 17, he still frequents the hut from time to time. By the end of 19th century, bears had been hunted almost to extinction in Finland. Lately, the population has bounced back and is now stable at about 250 individuals. On the Russian side of the border, the strength of the population might be near a thousand. Pekka has left some raw salmon outside in order to lure bears closer to the hut. That has attracted a flock of seagulls that cause quite a noisy racket. We also spot some white-tailed sea eagles on the trees. In a few minutes, the eagles land near the pond. At best, we can see six of them, talking and quarrelling with each other. A few hours have passed, but we haven’t seen any bears yet. We even start to doubt if we are going to see them. Then, someone spots our first bear in the forest. “Where, where?” – there is a commotion inside the hut. Soon, we see a brown bear cautiously approaching the pond. Our cameras start singing. He grabs a piece of fish, and runs away into the forest. We only got a short glimpse, but it’s a promising start. Later, we spot a group of three young bears. They come to the edge of the pond and start eating the fish. One of the bears approaches a tree trunk, and climbs it. They play around for a few minutes, but then quickly run into the forest. Pekka tells us that young bears are at the bottom level of the bear hierarchy,
In total, we have seen 6 white-tailed sea eagles and 8 different bear individuals during our tour.
and they don’t want any trouble from the other, bigger bears. Shortly, we see two new bears running towards the pond. Pekka says that this is a couple, and that the female is a frequent guest of theirs. This time, however, she has got a new boyfriend! The couple is not in a hurry, and they take their time feasting on the fish. The couple disappears in the forest. We are already very happy, but then, suddenly, we see him. A huge bear with dark fur! Everything about him tells us that he’s the king of this forest. He behaves in a very cool manner, not like the other bears. He comes with a buddy who is almost as huge as him, but with pale brown fur. When he stretches on his back legs up a nearby tree, we can truly see how huge he is! The bears sniff around, and feast on the salmon. We watch them for a good 10 minutes, amazed. Wow, what a show! Seeing these wild brown bears in the forest, just happy and living their lives, was an amazing experience. It still makes me shiver to remember these moments! Bear-watching tours are organised from the beginning of May until the end of September. They are quite popular and advance booking is recommended. The standard tour starts at 18.00 and lasts until around 22.00. The price for this tour is €120 per person (as of 2018). For an additional fee of €20 per person, you can stay the night. The hut has sleeping bunks for 8 guests. The bunks are equipped with mattresses and sleeping bags. There is also a gas stove for preparing your own food, a water supply, and a dry toilet. karhukuusamo.com ALL ABOUT LAPLAND | SUMMER 2019

LU O STO A M E T H YST M I N E THE AMETHYST MINE IS ONE OF LAPLAND’S REALLY UNIQUE ATTRACTIONS. HERE YOU CAN DIG YOUR OWN AMETHYST STONE AND EXPLORE LOCAL GEOLOGY. THE AMETHYST MINE is one of the most unique attractions in Lapland. It is situated near Luosto resort some 110 km away from Rovaniemi. The mine is an absolute must place to visit if you are making a road trip in northern Lapland. Luosto’s nature is at its best in the middle of summer and early autumn. The mine is situated amidst Pyhä-Luosto national park and private motoring is not allowed here. To get to the mine, you need to park your car at Ukkoluosto parking lot just South from the Luosto centre. From here, it takes about 30– 45 minutes to walk towards the Lampivaara Fell on top of which the mine resides. Guided tours to the mine start every hour from the Lampivaara cafe. A long wooden stairway leads to the top of the hill and the climb offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the amazing landscapes of the national park. Once you reach the top, you will be taken into the wooden cabin where your guide will tell you all about the origin of the amethyst stone and the geology of the region. Amethyst is a form of quartz, and it takes millions of years for it to be formed. The name comes from the Greek amethystos which refers to belief that the stone reliefs alcohol intoxication. When amethyst was discovered in Lampivaara, an important decision was made: not to extract amethyst with heavy machinery, but to make the mine a tourist attraction. It would only take 5–10 years to dig it all up with machines, which would result in a giant hole on the ground — not a very pleasant site!

So the amethyst is dug here only by hand, with simple picks. With the present system, it will take hundreds of years to mine it all, and the natural beauty of the place will be intact! Next, you will head to the open mining area, where you will dig for amethyst. The amethyst stone is naturally found here in abundance, so there is no need to plant stones just for the sake of tourists. In addition to amethyst, there are more simple quartz stones to be found. For the price of the entrance ticket, each visitor can take one amethyst stone, large enough to fit into one’s palm, for free.

Once you have found your amethyst, you can enjoy a tasty lunch at the mine cafe. For around 10€, the lunch includes soup of the day and bread. There is also a barbeque with firewood nearby, where you can cook your own picnic lunch. Many experienced tourists come here by mountain bikes with their own picnic supplies. The walk downhill from Lampivaara feels much easier than the climb! Back in Luosto, you can find the Little Mine Shop where more amethyst stones and jewellery are also on offer.
H I K I N G I N PY H Ä PYHÄ-LUOSTO NATIONAL PARK IS THE HOME FOR FINLAND’S LARGEST RAVINE, ISOKURU, AND MANY OTHER BREATHTAKING NATURAL SPOTS. SITUATED IN CENTRAL LAPLAND, the Pyhä-Luosto area presents some of the most breath-taking views in the region. A chain of rugged fells, the remnants of Europe’s oldest mountains, stretches for 35 km from the Pyhä resort to Luosto. The fells and their surrounding old-growth forests are enclosed in Pyhä-Luosto National Park, preserving them for outdoor enthusiasts and future generations. The Pyhä resort is a great starting point for adventures. Here at Visitor Centre Naava you can ask for advice about hiking routes and acquire maps of the area. Pyhä-Luosto National Park is situated just a stone’s throw away from the resort. It offers you plenty of choices for shorter one-day or overnight hikes with a tent. Hiking all the way to Luosto is also an option.
I S O K U RU R AV I N E
One of Pyhä’s most breath-taking places is the Isokuru ravine, the biggest ravine in Finland. It lies deep between the two fells of Kultakero and Ukonhattu. The ravine is easy to access by a paved wooden path. The rugged, time-worn slopes of the ravine are an amazing sight. At the bottom of the ravine you will see some quartzite stones with ripples on them left by the waves of an ancient ocean. According to scientists, they were created over 2 billion years ago! The ravine leads the visitors towards Lake Pyhänkasteenlampi (“lake of holy baptism”), enclosed between the rocky walls. The name of the lake is derived from 1648 when a group of forest Sami people were baptised here. The lake’s most impressive feature is a 17 metres high waterfall that feeds the lake with water from the fells.
T H E FO R E ST L A K E
From the bottom of the ravine the path goes into a steep ascent. Hundreds of wooden steps later, you can feel your legs turning into mush. Luckily, there are plenty of spots on the way to catch your breath. Next on the way is the forest lake of Karhunjuomalampi (“lake from which bears drink”). This small lake has pristine water and views, and right nearby you will find several leantos with a good supply of firewood. There is even a small wooden hut that can be used for a temporary stay. What a great place for a picnic! The place is populated by a few friendly Siberian Jay birds that will soon come and check what kind of snacks you’ve brought with you. Tip! The slopes of the nearby fell are usually rich with wild blueberries. The best blueberry season is from late-July to early-August. Make sure to bring some containers for the berries with you! N O I TAT U N T U R I F E L L
The Noitatunturi fell (540 m.a.s.l.) is the tallest in the chain of Pyhä fells. The path from the forest lake will take you to a junction where you can choose your destination. Moving forward, you will reach Lake Huttujärvi, which is a nice place for an overnight stay in a tent. The lake also has a wilderness hut that can be rented for the night. More info about that at the Visitor Centre Naava. From the junction you will also find a path towards the top of the Noitatunturi fell. The climb is not very steep, and as you are admiring the wonderful views, you won’t notice how the time flies. Indeed, some of the best landscapes in Finland open from the top of the fell! From there, you can descend via the other fell slope and find your way back to Pyhä. ALL ABOUT LAPLAND | SUMMER 2019

The Ice Age trail will take you from Levi centre to the top and around the Levi fell. It can be a rather demanding task so we recommend to reserve the whole day. Take your camera, some snacks, and plenty of water with you, and you are good to go. On your way, you will encounter some info sheets telling about the history and fauna of the region back in the Ice Age. The trail goes pretty high, so the views from there are quite breathtaking!
Levi Activity Park, situated at the bottom of the Gondola lift, offers people of all ages fun excercises and games. Its huge Adventure Park with its ziplines and obstacles can alone occupy you for the whole day! Here, you will also find a disc golf park, traffic park with mini cars, and mini golf. The Activity Park also offers some equipment rentals, such as downhill and enduro bikes, fabtikes, e-bikes and equipment for disc and mini golf.
Levi Golf course is situated in the beautiful natural terrain between Levi Fell and the Ounasjoki River. It is one of the world’s most northernly 18-hole golf courses which means that in summer the sun does not set at all here, and you can literally play all night long. It is a great place to test your golfing skills even if you are a beginner. Most hotels in Levi offer packages which include the green fee for golf course in the price of accommodation.

LIFE IS A CHALLENGE
LAURA PEIPPO IS ONE OF THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY PERSONS IN LAPLAND. SHE IS AN ENERGIZER BUNNY WHO HAS THE ENERGY OF 10 PEOPLE INSIDE HER. SHE IS A PERSONAL TRAINER, AN OUTDOORS ENTHUSIAST, A MOTHER AND THE CREATOR OF THE ARCTIC CHALLENGE OBSTACLE RACE. THIS IS HER STORY.

ALL ABOUT LAPLAND | SUMMER 2019
L
aura Peippo, 27, likes to live her life to the fullest. A normal, steady life is just not for her. As soon as she finds herself in too comfortable a situation, she starts looking for a new challenge. In just a few years, she became the owner of Levi Wellness Club that provides all kinds of guided training and gym facilities in Levi. In the meanwhile, she has also started the Arctic Challenge obstacle race that now draws hundreds of participants to Levi. “Perhaps I am a bit mental, but I just cannot settle down and enjoy life’s comfort. I just get bored! And the same goes for anything I do: sports, school or career,” says Laura. It took her time to find her true calling as a personal trainer and business owner. For several years, Laura worked as a chef in restaurants all over the world, including Norway, Switzerland, Italy and even India. During the last stint of her career, she was employed as a head chef at a local restaurant in Levi, Lapland. She was only 23 at that point. The pressures of running a restaurant with full staff, most of whom were older than her, kept piling on her. She neglected her well-being, did not exercise, smoked two packs of cigarettes per day, and forsook her social life. “When you are pushing yourself to the limit, doing a job which is not your passion, that only provides you with financial means and no satisfaction, it grinds you down in the long run,” says Laura. She burned out. It was time to quit. Laura had to find herself all over again. She rediscovered her passion for sports, something that she had been very fond of since childhood. She took on sessions of gym and football again. Laura started to enjoy life again, and the smile on her face and laughter she had lost finally came back. “Most of the time, people think that they enjoy doing something only because they are good at it. However, that might have nothing to do with what their real passion is!” says Laura. She called the owner of the newly opened Levi Wellness Club, Leena, and asked her for a job. Leena declined, as Laura had no education and no work experience. Laura persisted and Leena asked her to demonstrate herself as a personal trainer during one of the fitness courses. According to Laura, that went rather badly, but she got the job anyway. She thinks it was all due to her attitude. Later, Laura did some very extensive vocational training for her newly found career. She took part in numerous training courses around the country, and started
“MOST OF THE TIMES, PEOPLE THINK THAT THEY ENJOY DOING SOMETHING ONLY BECAUSE THEY ARE GOOD AT IT. HOWEVER, THAT MIGHT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT THEIR REAL PASSION IS!” her studies to become a personal trainer. In 2017, the owner of Levi Wellness Club decided to sell the business. She suggested Laura be the new owner, to which Laura gave her definitive yes: “I had given my body and soul to the Levi Wellness Club, and had become a spokesperson for it. Not buying the club was not even an option!” says Laura. After buying the club, things went forward, and fast! Laura opened another gym at the basement of ST1 petrol station shop, a new gym at Levi Hotel Spa, and a yoga studio. In 2015, she also launched the Arctic Challenge obstacle race. The idea for the challenge came during boot camp training for her clients. The boot camp culminated to a small obstacle race for the participants. Someone from the group suggested that other people would probably be interested in it too.
equally important. The slogan of the race “Not me, but we!” illustrates this attitude perfectly. This is one of the key factors for the success of the race, and the answer to why so many participants have returned year after year to experience the Arctic Challenge. One of the challenges that Laura herself faced as an organiser of the event was the bib numbers for the participants. “I had no idea where one could acquire the bibs. I had noticed a wooden stump on the gym floor which worked as a stool, and jokingly proposed that we just carve the number on the stump. Everybody told me I was crazy, but I insisted, and it stayed.”
At first, Laura dismissed the idea, but then realised that she herself had travelled to international competitions around the world. Why wouldn’t people come to Levi for such a challenge? Done! The First Arctic Challenge was held in Levi in summer 2015 with 150 participants. The word about it spread quickly by word of mouth. In 2017, there were already 350 participants, and the numbers have grown ever since. Besides Laura’s own personal input and charisma, the main difference to other obstacle races is that the Arctic Challenge is based around teams, not individuals. The goal is not to come first in the race, but to overcome oneself and take some time in the process! And taking care of other team members just like yourself is
The stumps have become an integral part of the race. Each pair of participants has to carry one stump from start to finish. And later, if you can’t resist losing your new beloved team member, you can take it home with you! People also wanted a winter version of the challenge, and the winter edition was first held in 2017, now drawing over 500 participants per race. “I am really excited about the winter race, as we can build so very different obstacles with snow. And you never know how the weather will turn out, if there is hard snowstorm blowing into your face, or a nice spring sunshine.” The next Arctic Challenge will be held on 20 July 2019. SITUATED ON THE NORTH-WEST EDGE OF FINLAND, THE REGION OF KILPISJÄRVI IS THE MOST VISUALLY UNIQUE AND STUNNING IN THE WHOLE COUNTRY. THE SAANA FELL, SITUATED NEAR THE VILLAGE OF KILPISJÄRVI, IS ONE THE MUST-VISIT PLACES IN THE REGION.

ilpisjärvi is situated at Finland’s northwestern tip, in the Enontekiö region. This rather narrow strip of land, caught between the countries of Sweden and Norway, preserves some of Finland’s most iconic landmarks and landscapes. With only 300 permanent inhabitants, the Kilpisjärvi population grows manifold during the peak of the summer and autumn season. Still, there’s enough space for everyone to feel like they are lost on their own here. Kilpisjärvi’s main feature is its stunning and untouched nature. There is something about these rugged rocky terrains, polished by the last Ice Age, that keeps drawing me back here, time after time. These eternal views and bright lakes are like a mirror for the soul, “This is where I belong, this is where I’d rather be.” Nowadays, I use every excuse to find my way back to Kilpisjärvi and explore its terrains.
the most memorable experiences I have had to this date. Lake Saanajärvi on the other side of the fell is a great destination for a shorter day trip. I’ve also spent a few nights in a tent here, admiring the views and the crystal clear water, and waiting for the northern lights to appear. A hike to the nearby Malla Strict Nature Reserve will also be rewarding. Here you can see the picturesque waterfall of Kitsi, the highest in Finland. And, if you walk the whole 11 km trail, you will end up at the ThreeCountry Cairn that marks the borders of Finland, Sweden and Norway. C O LO U R F U L AU T U M N

A good place to start your acquaintance with the area is Kilpisjärvi Visitor Centre. There you can find info about local hiking routes and their condition, and get a map of the area (the internet connection might not work everywhere). The ancient fell Saana dominates the landscape of Kilpisjärvi. Considered a holy fell by the indigenous Sami people, Saana still stands tall at its place. A hike to the top of the fell is one the must things to do here, even though the climb can take a bit of time. Standing on the northern slope of Saana during the time of the Midnight Sun is one of
Kilpisjärvi’s most picturesque season is, undoubtedly, that of the autumn foliage. The autumn colours are at their most vibrant during the first two weeks of September, when the whole terrain intensely shines in golden colours. This is also the time when the northern lights return to appear in the sky. In fact, autumn is one of the best season to see the northern lights activity, and because of the region’s northern location, the auroras can be seen here almost every night. Kilpisjärvi is not very abundant in choices, but those that exist here are fine enough. Santa’s Chalets Rakka situated right in the centre of the village is usually my home away from home here. Nearby there is a local supermarket and Restaurant Kilpis. Kilpisjärvi Holiday Village, situated further north by the road, is a great place for lunch, and also a place where the route towards Saana begins.

LAKE SAANAJÄRVI
The Three-Country Cairn marks a rare tripoint on the southern shore of Lake Kolttajärvi where the borders of the three countries of Finland, Sweden and Norway meet. In 1926, a 2.5 metres high concrete monument was erected here. To this date, it is still standing there. You can reach the spot by walking an 11 km trail through Malla Nature Reserve, or by taking a cruise with M/S Malla that will bring you only 2 km away from the cairn. www.mallalaiva.com
Visiting Saana fell is, of course, an absolute must thing to do in Kilpisjärvi. Even if you can’t reach its top spot (1029 m.a.s.l.), climbing some way up its northern slope will open you Finland’s best views. The path to Saana starts at Kilpisjärvi Holiday Village. Make sure to reserve several hours for the full experience, and pack some water and snacks with you. Needless to say, the best time to visit Saana in midsummer is evening and early night!
Lake Saanajärvi gives you a totally new angle on Saana fell. Situated behind the fell, the lake presents some stunning views in any season. In summer, when the sun does not set, you can admire nature in its magical light. In autumn, when the nights get dark, you can see the first northern lights of the season here. The 5 km trail to Lake Saanajärvi starts right in the village. Near the lake, there is a nice hut with a firewood supply for your picnic. ALL ABOUT LAPLAND | SUMMER 2019

AUTUMN! T E X T A N D P H O T O S B Y: A L E X A N D E R K U Z N E T S O V
WHEN THE NIGHTS START TO GET DARK IN AUTUMN, THE NORTHERN LIGHTS RETURN TO THE NORTHERN SKIES. AUTUMN IS ONE OF THE BEST SEASONS TO SEE THE DANCE OF THE AURORA DUE TO HIGHER SOLAR WIND ACTIVITY.

ALL ABOUT LAPLAND | SUMMER 2019

urora Borealis is the most unique and mysterious phenomenon which can be observed in the skies over Scandinavia. Most people think that the northern lights can only be seen during the winter months, but this is not true. Northern lights happen all around the year, however, in summer months we can’t see them due to white nights. From May to August, there is no night in Lapland, and for 1 month the Midnight Sun is shining around the clock. In mid-August, the nights start to get dark, and the northern lights can be seen again. Autumn is one of the best seasons to see the northern lights due to high solar wind activity. Autumn is also great because the weather is not that cold yet. Daily temperatures stay around +5°C but can go below 0°C at night. The rives and lakes still remain open which makes it possible to capture the reflection of the northern lights in the water. HOW DO THE AURORAS HAPPEN?
It all starts with the Sun which is constantly sending solar wind (charged particles) into space. Usually, it takes 3-4 days for the solar wind to reach the Earth. Most of the solar wind is blocked by the Earth’s magnetic shield, but those particles that do make it into our atmosphere, can generate bright lights in the night skies. Sometimes, when there are solar storms on the Sun, it shoots out powerful batches of solar wind, known as ‘Coronal Mass Ejections’ or CMEs. Normally, the auroras appear in the regions north from the Arctic Circle, and south from the Antarctic Circle. When the Coronal Mass Ejections reach Earth, they can generate even more powerful auroras that can be seen south from the Arctic Circle and even at mid-latitudes.
moment of the night, but are more likely to appear between 9pm and 1am. The exact time is almost impossible to predict, so warm clothes and thermos with hot tea are a great help during a long wait! If you really want to get the timing right, I recommend using the Aurora Alert App. It offers some aurora forecast, and if you have a paid subscription, it will inform you when the auroras are dancing in the skies. Their network of sensors is scattered all over Lapland and it will alert you with a notification or an sms message. I’ve tested the app for a few weeks, and it works like a clock. More information at: www.nlalert.fi M A K I N G AU RO R A P H OTO S
To make the best aurora photos you need a proper DSLR camera. It will help you capture as much of light as possible with less amount of noise. You need to put the camera on a tripod or a firm surface to achieve a sharp image. The settings for photos greatly depend on the camera model, type of the lens and light conditions. During the dark autumn, the exposure time is usually the longest, somewhere between 5 and 20 seconds. Often the aurora looks like a static arch over the northern horizon, but sometimes it moves quickly around the sky. Generally, wide angle lenses are the best choice for northern lights and night photography in general. The best lenses that I use myself are the Sigma Art series, 20mm or even 14mm lens with aperture of F1.4 and F1.8 respectively. Regardless of the lens that you use, you need to switch it to manual focusing and set the focus to infinity. In autumn, stay close to the water, so you capture the Aurora with its reflection. In Rovaniemi, the closest good spot near the city centre is the Arktikum park near the Arktikum museum. Good luck!
AURORA HUNTING T O U R S I N R O VA N I E M I Our editor-in-chief Alex is a passionate aurora hunter. Alex always monitors the aurora activity and never misses a good aurora show. From the end of August, you can join him for the Aurora Hunting Tour in Rovaniemi area. He departs only if there is a good chance to see the northern lights. If it is cloudy in Rovaniemi area, he would go to other areas in Lapland where clear skies are expected. Alex is a professional photographer, and you will get photos and videos after the successful Northern Light hunt. The tour costs 180€ per person, including warm clothes and boots, a snack and hot drinks, photos and videos. The price is valid until 31.10.2019. The tours take from 2 to 6 people. For more info, send Alex a message on Whatsapp +358 400 82 55 70 or via email: hello@allaboutlapland.fi.

There are many sites that publish aurora forecasts. I often use www.spaceweather. com. Keep in mind that aurora forecasts can be quite uncertain, and on some occasions, they are simply incorrect. This is because we still know very little about the universe that surrounds us. The most reliable aurora forecasts can be made 2–3 days in advance. Also, the sky needs be clear at the time when the aurora activity starts. If it is very cloudy or raining, the chances to see northern lights are small, so remember to check the weather forecast too. Often, a lot of patience is required see the northern lights. They can come at any ALL ABOUT LAPLAND | SUMMER 2019

Arctic Art and Design; Media Education; Tourism, Culture and International Management (TourCIM); и Northern Tourism.

ALL ABOUT LAPLAND | SUMMER 2019
ALL ABOUT LAPLAND | SUMMER 2019

ALL ABOUT LAPLAND | SUMMER 2019

ALL ABOUT LAPLAND | SUMMER 2019
