Time to Travel! 2016 WAS a year of Tourism in Lapland! The volume of international passengers flying to Lapland grew 22.7% from 2015, and new direct flights from Europe were established. Number of overnights grew to all-time highs all over Lapland. The trend is likely to continue, but not to worry, we are not running out of space! After all, Lapland is one of the cleanest and sparsely populated areas in Europe! Summer is an amazing time to travel to Lapland. With the vibrant light of the midnight sun, the sky is bright all night. In fact, night time is likely to be the best time for many activities, such as hiking, biking, fishing, jet skiing etc. Berry picking season will start in late July and these wonderful gifts of nature can be collected for free. What a great way to energise your body with vitamins!

In late 2016, we had wonderful news from Ranua Wildlife Park: a cute polar bear cub was born here! Since he appeared to the public in March 2017, he has melted the hearts of many. Make sure to visit Ranua Wildlife Park and see him play! In the end of August, when the nights are getting dark, the Aurora season starts again. In fact, Autumn is usually the best month to see the Northern Lights! If you want to admire the Auroras, September and October might be the best months, and it’s not too cold yet! Being a passionate aurora hunter myself, I started my Aurora Tours in 2016. We had lots of amazing aurora nights this winter, and in late August the tours will continue! (page 46). All-in-all, it is going to be a great summer. Pack your bags and prepare your cameras. It’s time to travel!

The Rise of Tourism

Finnish design Alvar Aalto is probably the most famous Finnish architect and designer who introduced Finnish design to the world. Aalto designed buildings, but also common things like furniture and tableware. In 1933, he came with an idea of a simple stool, a combination of bent birch veneer and solid wood. It became an evergreen classic that is still manufactured today. After the WWII, it was Alvar Aalto who came up with engineous town plan for the city of Rovaniemi in the shape of the reindeer head and antlers.

The Moomins The Moomins are the adorable little characters, created by the Swedishspeaking Finnish writer Tove Jansson. Between 1945 and 1970, she released a series of books about the Moomins who have since become a household name. Nowadays, you can visit the Moomin World in Naantali, Southern Finland. There are also plenty of Moominsbranded products in souvenir shops around Lapland .

Nowadays, tourism is one of Lapland’s most important industries. A few decades ago the situation was different. It all started with the first adventurous travellers who went to discover the North. In the 1970’s, many beautiful ski centres and resorts were found in Lapland, for example, Levi, Ylläs, and Pyhä, and in 1985 Santa made Rovaniemi his hometown.

What will be Finland’s next export to conquer the world? Chances are, that it is going to be superfoods. Clean nature and a healthy way of life are growing trends, and several superfood companies were recently found in Lapland. Arctic Warriors Ltd. is one of them. Their herbal gels and green powders like spruce sprout (image) bring natural vitamins to your table!

In 2006, Europe was shaked by the Hard Rock Hallelujah! That was the name of the song that won Mr. Lordi and his monsters that year’s Eurovision song contest. Victory was celebrated all around Finland, but it tasted especially sweet in Rovaniemi, Mr. Lordi’s hometown. The city’s central square is now named after Mr. Lordi and here you can admire the prints of the monsters’ paws, installed on a memorial plate.

“Connecting people” This slogan is synonimous with the 1990’s and the first part of the 2000’s as well. All thanks to the fact that in the 1980’s Nokia corporation switched its focus from rubber boots and tyres to consumer electronics. In 1987, they launched Mobira Cityman 900 mobile phone on the market, the first real mobile phone that was small and light enough to carry along. The rest was history, with Neo saying “I need an exit” in the iconic Matrix movie, and the snake game that everybody was playing on their indestructible 3210’s.

Angry Birds In 2009, the whole world fell victim to the fast-spreading addiction of the Angry Birds. Who was not playing that video game then? Angry Birds had quit their virtual world and started to invade the physical one. They were materialized in the form of toys, soft drinks, and even fishing rods. Luckily, it did not stop there! Rovio company teamed up with Rovaniemi-based playground manufacturer Lappset to produce beautiful themed children’s playgrounds! You can find them in Rovaniemi centre (free entrance) and SantaPark.

Rovaniemi tourism grows double digits in 2016 Rovaniemi has been a landmark for travellers since the early 1980’s when the graceful Concorde jets had first landed on the Rovaniemi airfield. They brought some of the first guests to shake hands with Santa, and admire the beauty of Lapland. Even though their numbers were small, these first tourists became trendsetters, opening the gate to Lapland. Now, thirty years later, the tourism business is thriving in Rovaniemi. Tourists are pouring into Lapland, and year 2016 showed truly unprecedented growth. Number of overnights in registered accommodation grew 17,6%, compared to previous year. December 2016 alone demonstrated 31% growth in registered overnights by international tourists. Rovaniemi has also become the media magnet, attracting reporters, bloggers, instagrammers, and large-scale TV productions. In 2016, for example, Rovaniemi served as a venue for filming The Bachelor TV series, and China’s biggest reality show We Are In Love. The success hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 2016, The City of Rovaniemi has received a prestigious Internationalisation award of the President of the Republic of Finland for its long-term efforts in developing Rovaniemi as a tourist brand. Much of the credit for this achievement belongs to Visit Rovaniemi, a tourism marketing company, owned 51% by the City of Rovaniemi and 49% by 170 member companies. CEO of Visit Rovaniemi, Sanna Kärkkäinen, accepted the award from President Sauli Niinistö in late 2016. We sat down with Sanna Kärkkäinen to discuss this success and future plans of the city. 10

It is a wilderness with services! Sanna, it has been an amazing year for Rovaniemi, congratulations! What was the main reason for such a success? — Thank you! There are few things that were going into one direction. Firstly, there is a certain interest towards the North in general, Finnish design, livelihood, and pure nature. Here, it is clean, safe and everything is working. It is a wilderness with services! Secondly, we have become trendy among the global travellers. After having found all the European capitals, they are now looking towards the North. They want something new, and not so crowded. Our small size and the solitude is one of our biggest pros. Thirdly, we’ve been focusing hard on marketing. Digital world made us closer to the travellers, and social media help spread the beautiful photos, taken by the happy guests. Northern lights have also been a big hit, contributing to the image of our city. How did Rovaniemi end up under the President’s radar? — We have been doing a long-term job with international marketing in travel business. Santa Claus is now more popular than ever! This is a result of our joint efforts with Visit Finland and local companies. But the latest thing that got attention was our focus on the Chinese market. We’ve been opening doors for international tourism to Lapland because of the iconic Hometown of Santa Claus. In October 2016, Alitrip, part of the global Alibaba online shop, launched

their first European travel product here. They had chosen Rovaniemi to be their 1st travel product, and Arctic Circle as a venue for their launch event. What does that award mean to you? — The most important thing is that the significance of tourism has been lifted up, in whole Finland. We’ve also got lots of new contacts from different business fields, such as cosmetics, food and drink, other service sectors, who want to partner with tourism in their marketing efforts. What are the challenges that Rovaniemi is facing? Is the city ready to grow? — We have been growing nicely lately. This gives us a signal that we need to invest more. For Christmas season 2016 we had 350 new bed places and for Christmas 2017 we will have 500 more. We want to balance our busy winter with less busy summer. Sustainable thinking is to grow the full year round. Big winter season is always full, but we want to say to our guests: “Please come in winter, but also have a look at our beautiful summer!”. What activities would you recommend for Summer in Rovaniemi? — All the things that we do in winter, can be shifted to summer. There are lots of activities with the animals, and many tours that go into the nature, biking and hiking. We also have river activities, sauna experiences, swimming in the rivers. Our newest program is called “Live as locals”. We take people to Finnish saunas, or biking in the countryside. We go berry picking and then make something out of them.

New direct flights to Lapland LAPLAND’S TOURISM has been doing strong lately. In 2016, the air traffic to Lapland surpassed 1 million passengers. The volume of international tourists grew by 22,7% compared to 2016, reaching 276 thousand. One of the reasons for the growth were the new direct flight connections to Lapland. In 2015 Lufthansa was the first airline to start direct route between Europe and Finnish Lapland. This made a huge impact to the region’s visibility, and showed a path to other airliners. Year after, Germania, Monarch and Norwegian have indeed joined the “Lapland race”. In winter 2016-2017, they started direct flights from Dusseldorf, London and Manchester to Kittilä, as well as from Berlin, Zurich and London to Rovaniemi. Also, Finnair established a lot of direct flights between Helsinki and major Asian Cities, like Hong-Kong and Singapore, and

increased the amount of connecting flights to Lapland as well. In Summer 2017, the growth is expected to continue and the fame of Lapland as a tourist destination to spread even wider. Consequently, the first direct flight to Lapland for the summer season was announced by Voigt Travel. Their new connection from Amsterdam to Rovaniemi will operate twice a week in June and July. Additionally, there will be more scheduled flights to Helsinki from all over the world. For example, Transavia will start operating flights from Amsterdam, Croatia Airlines from Zagreb, and Blue Air from Bucharest. In turn, Finnair and Norwegian will commence new flights to Helsinki from US, Mexico, Spain, India, Bulgaria and the Netherlands. Finnair is also increasing the capacity and frequency of its connecting flights from Helsinki to Lapland.

For the next winter season 2017–2018, Finnair has decided to join the party and will commence their direct flights directly from Europe to Lapland:

Ruka brings the joy of the early snow HOW DO YOU START a skiing season in the middle of the autumn? The answer is simple — you store the snow from the last year’s winter! In Kuusamo, Finland, daytime temperatures can still climb to +5…+7°C in the beginning of October…still too warm for the snow canons to function. Not to worry! Last winter, Ruka Ski Resort had stored over 30.000 m3 of snow in a three giant piles, covered by a white reflective tarp. Even though some of it metled away during the warm summer months, there was still plenty of it left in the autumn. In 2016, Ruka Ski Resort opened at 10.00 on the 10th day of the 10th month, precisely as planned.

Even thought this might seem like a good marketing trick, there’s actually a real demand for an early opening. Many professional snowboarders and skiers need to start training before the competition season is actually underway. For example, Ruka’s very own Enni Rukajärvi, Olympic silver medalist

2014 in slopestyle, prefers to train at home instead of searching for snow elsewhere. When she hits the slope for the first time in months, she’s not alone: there are many enthusiasts who likewise are excited to star the season early. According to Matti Parviainen, operational director at Ruka Ski Resort, storing last year’s snow makes it possible to announce the opening of the new season right at the end of a previous one. Another benefit is ecology. It is much more energy efficient to make snow during the cold winter days, than during the warmer autumn, even taking the melting into account. Sustainability is taken seriously at Ruka Ski Resort. Various energy efficiency measures were implemented at Ruka in the past years, such as the adoption of automated energy-saving led technology for lighting. Old two-stroke snowmobiles used in slope maintenance were

gradually replaced with new and efficient four-stroke variants, which halved the gasoline consumption. Making the snow at the perfect conditions of mid-winter is another energy efficiency measure. Climate change is a fact, and the Arctic is especially vulnerable to it. With each year the winters are starting later and later, but the demand for snow only continues to grow. Also, when tourists start pouring in early, it fuels the local economy, providing income for hotels, services, and jobs for the locals. In 2017, Ruka Ski Resort will start the season on October 6th, which is several weeks earlier than any other resort in Finland. The amount of snow stored during this winter is significant. It will allow for the opening of two slopes in the autumn: a snow park and a slalom slope. If you are looking to start your winter season early, Ruka Ski Resort has got you covered. Polar bear cub born at the Ranua Wildlife Park A POLAR BEAR CUB was born at the Ranua Wildlife Park in Lapland on November 25th 2016. The mother, polar bear Venus, gave birth to two polar bear cubs, however, only one polar bear cub has survived. Still, this was a good news, as usually, only half of the polar bear cubs born in captivity survive the first two weeks. The newborn baby is the second polar bear cub born at the Ranua Wildlife Park to survive. His sibling, polar bear Ranzo, was born in 2011 and pleased the eyes of the visitors for three seasons until he was moved to the Zoo in Vienna, Austria in 2014. The polar had spent his first few months in a warm and secure environment of the den. The mother and child were given their full privacy, but were constantly monitored by the surveillance cameras. From the very beginning the cub has showed to have quite a joyful character, constantly playing with his mother and even giving her some gentle bites. That’s, of course, when he wasn’t occupied with sleeping and cuddling in her warm fur. At the age of a few months the cub had finally become strong enough to step out the den. On March 15th 2017, the hatch of the den was finally lifted. A couple of dozens of journalists, photographers, and regular visitors watched in amazement how two furry white figures cautiously emerged at the door. Mother Venus was the first to step out, rising on her hind legs, sniffing air and checking if it was safe. She was soon followed by a curious furry little ball, the adorable polar bear cub, who saw the big world for the first time in his life. It was all new to him — the white snow, daylight

Birth of a polar bear is the most significant thing that can happen to us! and even the fresh air. Cautiously, he was making his first steps alongside his mom, exploring his new domain. Soon, however, he started to play in the snow and even gave the surrounding bushes a good bite! These days, the baby is doing well and is growing fast. He is free to choose whether he stays in the den or comes to play at the enclosure. Most of the time, however, he spends playing outside with his mom, to the delight of the Wildlife Park’s guests. During the summer months feeding shows will be organised from 12.30 to 13.00 to make it easier for the public to see them.

Little polar bear cub does not have a name yet. As the Wildlife Park’s tradition stands, the name will be chosen in the public name competition. Any guest of the park can leave his or her suggestion on the spot, or online until August 31st 2017. The winner of the competition will not only give the name to the polar bear, but also receive an accommodation package for the whole family at the Gulo Gulo Holiday Village in Ranua, and a private tour to the park. The polar bear cub is expected to draw tens of thousands visitors to the park. In 2012, when his brother Ranzo was around, annual visits to the Wildlife Park grew to 153.000 from just under the regular 100.000. — Birth of the polar bear is the most significant thing that can happen to us. Polar bears are the largest carnivores, a symbol of endangerment. They are our most popular animals to see, explains Tommi Hinno, CEO of Ranua Wildlife Park . The Wildlife Park is now preparing for a record season. Opened in 1983 in a tiny municipality of Ranua 80 km south from Rovaniemi, the Wildlife Park has already become one of Lapland’s top destinations. Here, you can see over 200 animals belonging to at least 50 different Arctic species, such as brown bears, wolves, wolverines, lynxes, musk ox, reindeer and many others. The animals have a privilege of living in the spacious enclosures, located in the middle of a forest. In summer, a domestic park with farm animals is also open in the area. at the ITB Berlin fair, the world’s leading travel trade show, alongside Visit Finland: — Finland has good conditions to become the leading Nordic well-being travel nation. FinRelax is a new way to create products for travellers out of things which we take for granted: clean, untouched nature and exercising in it, the food from the north, the sauna tradition, berry picking and various treatments, says FinRelax manager Kiti Häkkinen of Visit Finland. MIDSUMMER DAY Midsummer day is one of Summer’s most important events in Finland. People gather to their summer cottages to spend some time relaxing amidst the nature and going to the sauna. At midnight, on the eve of Midsummer day, bonfires will be lit around the country to celebrate the summer! They are usually set up close to the water or at elevated places. The trails are well marked and there are amazing facilities available for you for free (or nearly) in the forest, like lean-to’s with firewoods, campings sites, water wells and wilderness cabins.

Hiking BERRY PICKING SEASON starts in July! It is so popular in Finland that it’s almost like a “national sport”! Indeed, in summer, there even are “battles” for the “good spots” — the goal is to collect the harvest first! However, only a few percent of the berries are gathered, and there’s plenty of them for everyone! Lappish berries are truly considered to be superfood, as they contain lots of vitamins. Find them and eat them!

and a great opportunity to obtain healthy protein, nearly for free! There are over 188 thousand lakes and many hundreds of rivers in Finland. You can fish for free with hook and line, but you will need to buy a permit for some heavier gear. It can be obtained in visitor centres or at any R-Kioski.

FINNISH DESIGN has lately become a hot topic. Simple, but graceful lines, minimalistic palette and a functional approach have appealed to many. Finnish design has its long lasting traditions, established by the classics like Arabia, Iittala and Marimekko. Talking about Finnish design, one must mention great designer and architect Alvar Aalto who had really put Finland on the world design map. Together with his wife Aino, he founded Artek furniture company in 1935 to respond to the growing demand for his design products. Aalto had also played a major role in the creation of the modern image of Rovaniemi. The city was completely destroyed in 1944 by the retreating German soldies. After the war, Aalto came up with an ingenious town plan. He used the shape of the reindeer’s head, a true Lappish image, to wrap the city center inside it. The antlers of the reindeer worked as the city’s roads and arteries, and in place of the eye he had put the city stadium. He had also created the beautiful cultural and administrative center of the city: a trio of Lappia Hall, Rovaniemi City Library and the City Hall. While Finnish design had drawn inpsiration from functionalism and Bauhaus, Lappish design was always inspired by nature. Handicrafts were practiced in Lapland for centuries. The Sami people, for example, used every single part of the reindeer’s body to create something useful — food, clothes, tools, threads and more. One of the oldest and truly Lappish design brands is Marttiini. This knife factory was established in Rovaniemi in 1928, and knives are still produced here today. For a Laplander, knife is first and foremost a practical item, a tool, however, knife making can also a form art. Marttiini often uses reindeer horn in the handles of the knives, as well as bronze ferrules with animals, making them collectible items. You can still visit the Marttiini old factory to gaze at the beautiful knives and find out about the brand’s history.

DESIGN | LAPLAND TIPS Jewellery is another area where Lappish desingers have excelled. Taigakoru, or “Jewel from Taiga”, is one the leading workshops in Lapland. Found in 1982 by the talented designer Juha Janger, the workshop still produces all of its jewellery locally. Taigakoru draws inspiration from the Sami culture, its shamanistic traditions and the Lappish nature. See for example, their ‘Risku’ brooches whose glistening sound was believed to bring good luck, or the Shaman drum series, depicting the forces of nature, power animals, and Sami gods. Visit their factory shops at shopping centre Rinteenkulma and Santa Claus Village. Another local design brand to look at is Pentik. Started by Anu Pentik in a small village of Posio in 1970’s, this brand has become a household item around the world. Pentik tableware and home decor products represent a true Scandinavian elegance with organic Lappish motifs. Make sure to pop by the Pentik store on the second floor of Sampokeskus Shopping Centre! By the way, another good place to shop for Finnish design is the Santa Claus Village. There, you will find factory shops by Marimekko and Iittala, and products by Arabia and Fiskars.

Nowadays, Lappish design is doing better than ever. Last few years have brought many young and Lappish designers and brands. Moodag Jewellery is one of them. Designer Katja Lehtinen draws inspiration from crystal clear waters of lake Inari at the shore of which she resides and puts them in the beautiful silver jewels. Another example is the Alice in Northernland brand, created by the three talented ladies from Rovaniemi. They are inspired by Rovaniemi’s natural and urban landspace to create beautiful prints that are transefered onto a range of household items. SANTA’S SALMON PLACE is a little Lappish tepee in Santa Claus Village. You would not believe, but it hides inside one of Rovaniemi’s most interesting restaurants! There’s only one main course on the menu, but it is cooked to perfection. Here, they serve the world’s most delicios salmon. It is glow-fried by an open fire right before your eyes. This will probably be your best salmon dish ever! For dessert, you can go for the traditional Lappish baked cheese. The service is friendly, and the atmosphere is lovely. If you are in Santa Claus Village, make sure to visit this little hidden gem!

RESTAURANT NILI was recently voted Rovaniemi’s best restaurant by the locals. The award is certainly well deserved! Nili is known for its true Lappish hospitality, aimable service and amazing atmosphere. The restaurant specialises on the Lappish cuisine and local ingredients. Here you can taste such classics as sauteed reindeer with mash potatoes, lingonberry jam and pickles (photo). One dish to recommend is Rovaniemi market, an assortment of the best treats of Lappish cuisine, such as reindeer, fish, mushrooms and berries. At Nili, you can also try some rare dishes, such as game, willow ptarnigan and bear meat.

HOSTEL CAFÉ KOTI was opened in Rovaniemi in winter 2016 by two young entrepreneurs. The hostel features 24 brand new, comfortable rooms for a good price, however, that’s not the reason why the place is featured here. It’s the little café that is situated downstairs. The hostel wants to provide a cosy space for both locals and tourists to interact…and succeeds in that goal! The café is open daily from 7AM, serving breakfast for an affordable price of 8€. On weekdays, lunch is offred here which includes a soup of the day and several fresh salads. You can also come by for a cup of coffee or sample the Koti Platter (image), a selection of tasty Lappish appetizers.

A journey into the Arctic Flavours ARCTIC BOULEVARD sets you on a real journey into the world of arctic flavours and celebrates the diversity of the Lappish ingredients. The chef and his teammates, even forage for berries, mushrooms and herbs for the needs of the restaurant! According to the chef, these authentic flavours don’t need a special magic in the kitchen, as they are magical by themselves! The restaurant is situated inside the Arctic Light Hotel, chosen as Finland’s best by

TripAdvisor and Trivago. The restaurant cetainly aspires to the title. The service is aimable and the decor is stylishly modern. Recently, Arctic Boulevard renewed its menu, and we’re here to test it out. We start with lingonberry ‘Jokna’ and cranberry and lime ‘Puro’ cocktails — it is a melody of flavours with nuances of the wild berries! For starters, we have a steamy pot of hot smoked reindeer tongue. Its mellow smokey flavour transports you right by the fireplace

in the middle of a Lappish forest. Another good choice is the boletus mushrooms with earthy croquettes and sour cranberries — best vegetarian that I’ve tasted in a while. And what about the arctic char and seaweed caviar served on a wooden palette — a true piece of art! For the main, the dish of choice is the reindeer with pine hollandaise, accompanied by root vegetables and Lappish potatoes. The pine-infused sauce is amazing, and complements well the delicate taste of the reindeer. Equally remarkable is the arctic char with saltiness of the fish, sweetness of the barley risotto, all crowned by the rich lobster sauce. Is there room for dessert? Of course! Chocolate mousse with wild berries just melts in your mouth, and sweet blueberry jam with whipped cream is heavenly. If you want to experience the flavours of the rugged Lappish fells, Arctic Boulevard is the place! By the way, if you just need a bite to eat, a cup coffee and a relaxing moment, head straight to the ‘Lasiterassi’ lounge of the Arctic Light Hotel. It offers the best little bites from the Arctic Boulevard menu as well as salads, burgers and more.

French cuisine with a Lappish twist FRANS & CHÉRIE is a cosy bistro with smart dishes, inspired by the French love of food. The menu contains many of the French classics like charcuterie, sizzling snails, duck and steaks, but there is also a special Lappish menu. Lappish cuisine’s main ingredient is the reindeer, and here you can taste it in many ways. Sautéed reindeer with mashed potatoes and lingonberries is a true classic. A modern variant is a tenderloin of reindeer in red wine sauce — simply delicious! And you can’t go wrong with creamy salmon soup or the amazing fish dishes. Cooked to perfection,

the whitefish, served with Lappish potato wedges and crayfish sauce, just melts in your mouth (photo)! For dessert, there’s nothing better than the baked lappish cheese with cloudberry jam — a great finish for your journey into the Lappish cuisine. Frans & Chérie is also an excellent lunch place. For 12€ you are given access to the buffet table, filled with salads, entrees and main dishes. In summer, Frans & Chérie offers one of the best terraces in town, overlooking the beautiful Kemijoki river.

Going out like a local! UITTO PUB is a legendary place that attracts Rovaniemi dwellers for decades. The minute you enter the door, you feel like home. The decor and the pub’s name play hommage to the times when fearless lumbercjacks floated log by the local rivers. These daredevils liked to offset their tough job with a little bit of fun, and the pub carries on their traditions of partymaking! Uitto’s ‘Beer & You’ board brings you a selection of their finest beers. There are many international labels available, but I suggest to go for the local craft beers. For example, try the artisan lagers and ales by the Rovaniemi-based Lapland Brewery. They have already won the hearts of the locals, and you are their next target! Rich-flavoured Arctic Stout by Tornio Brewery is also a great choice. The water used for its production is already so clean that it doesn’t need any artificial purification. PIZZA IS DEAR to every Finn’s heart, even to the point of becoming one of Finland’s “national foods”. When it comes to pizza, there’s no other place that matches restaurant Rosso. On their list, you will find the classic Neapolitan pizzas, as well as the rustic Roman-style artisan pizza. If you want to go for someting local, try the ‘Suometar’ pizza. It was designed by a 6-year-old Erika Kurri, who had won Rosso’s “Most Finnish Pizza” competition. Smoked reindeer, chanterelles, onion and Lappish baked chease make it a true adventure into the local flavours. At Rosso you can sample many of the other treats of Italian cuisine, such as salads, pasta, stakes and more. Their summer terrace is also an excellent place to spend the evening.

CAFE&BAR 21 is one of the best cafes in Rovaniemi, which I frequent daily. It is an excellent place to go for lunch or a quick nourishing snack. Their menu offers a great selection of salads with toppings of your choices, baked potatoes, pasta, and my favourite — the hearty salmon soup! A cup of tea or coffee is included in the price during lunch hours on weekdays from 11 AM to 14 PM. Cafe&bar 21 is especially famous for their waﬄes. You can order them as a main dish with sour fillings, like chicken or meatballs, or as a dessert with fruits and berries. Yummy!

ARCTIC ICE CREAM FACTORY is an artisan brand of ice creams from Rovaniemi. Behind it is Anna-Riikka Lavia who in 2015 saw an excellent business opportunity: — There was no one making ice cream locally. I had developed my own ice cream formula and I love ice cream, because it always brings back fun childhood memories, says Anna-Riikka. For locals, her ice cream is naturally the top choice! Currently, it comes in several flavours including Vanilla, Cloudberry, Liquorice, Fudge and dairy free Strawberry. The ice cream is made by hand in small batches, that’s why it always tastes so fresh and creamy! — The berries for my ice creams come mostly from Northern Finland. They are of very high quality, explains Anna-Riikka. If you want to try a local flavour, go for the Cloudberry ice cream. It is delicious! For the summer season, Anna-Riikka has prepared some special treats: ice cream sandwiches that will come in Vanillla, Fudge and Lingonberry flavours, all with chocolate topping, and paletas — ice pops with forest berries. Arctic Ice Cream Factory shares facilities with Choco Deli cafe in Rovaniemi where their ice cream parlour is open all year round. In summer, their ice cream bar will be right beside the river, at the start of Koskikatu street. Many restaurants serve these ice creams as desserts, including Aitta Deli cafe, Rakas restaurant near Santa Park, and Kiisa restaurant at Break Levi Hotel. You can also buy packed ice creams at K-Supermarket Rinteenkulma in Rovaniemi.

Weekends from 12 PM to 3 PM Cafe&bar 21 offers a brunch menu with some very delicious options, such as eggs benedict, bagels and pancakes. Add a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and you are in heaven! If you’re looking for a place to have a couple of drinks, look no further! Cafe-bar 21 is renowned for its selection of quality wines and refreshing cocktails. If you would like to taste some local appetisers, go for the Lappish tapas plate with salmon, smoked reindeer and Lappish cheese!

Lapland restaurant Kotahovi RESTAURANT KOTAHOVI is located in Santa Claus Village, at the Santa Claus Reindeer farm. Inside the farm’s main building, the traditional Lappish “kota” hut, is housed one of Rovaniemi’s most authentic restaurants. It is run by the Körkkö family, reindeer herders for several generations. If you want to dive into the world of Lappish gastronomy, this is a good place to start. Here you can try dishes made from famous Lappish ingredients, such as the reindeer, salmon, mushrooms and arctic berries. My advice: go for the traditional salmon soup for starter and sauteed reindeer for main! The restaurant will start its summer season on July 6th 2017, however, you can visit Santa Claus Reindeer farm all-year-round. Here you can see the reindeer, take photos with them, feed them, or spend a whole day practicing the skills of the reindeer herders!

Summer in Lapland is short but wonderful. It’s June and the temperature is comfy +17°C. We are at the boating station in the centre Rovaniemi, all geared up in wetsuits and ready to go. The time is nearing 22 PM but it won’t get dark all night. Tonight, we are joining the Arctic Lifestyle on their jet ski adventure. This is a relatively new safari and we are excited to try it out! The engines are roaring and we start heading North. The city looks different from the river. We see summer cottages, saunas being heated and people making barbecue. We pass beautiful landscapes and soon reach a little island in the delta of Ounasjoki river. We step ashore and our guide starts preparing us a little picnic. As the sun is getting closer to the horizon, the light becomes more mysterious. We drink some coffee, and sun-bath in its gentle rays. The bravest of us decide to take a refreshing plunge into the water! The time passes quickly and it’s time to go home. Our jet skis are gliding over the water as if we are flying. If you want to meet the adorable reindeer and friendly huskies, the “Highlights of your Arctic Journey” tour will do you just that. In summer, it is usually too hot for the huskies to run, however, if the temperature drops low enough, you might be able to do a short ride. After getting to know the huskies, you will head to the reindeer farm to feed these beautiful animals. There’s time to take photos and enjoy a cup of coffee. The tour is topped by meeting the man himself, the real Santa Claus! Another great tour is a visit to the Ranua Wildlife Park where you can gaze at 50 different species of arctic animals. The tour includes a cosy car ride to Ranua, and a guided excursion around the Wildlife Park.

SUMMER FUN WITH ANIMALS Meet furry friends even in the summer! Several husky and reindeer farms are open for visitors in the non-snowy season. Visits to reindeer farms include meeting reindeer and learning about the animals as well as the people herding them. For huskies, summer is a mix of holidays and training for the coming winter. Farm visits give a chance to meet the dogs and cuddle with puppies even when it’s too warm for them to run. Horseback riding is another great way to experience Lappish nature in a less conventional manner. Saddle up!

THE MIDNIGHT SUN The Midnight Sun season in Rovaniemi lasts from early June until early July, but nights are white from late May until early August. In the summer, virtually anything that can be done during the day, can also be done in the middle of the night. One of the most accessible ways of seeing the Midnight Sun is simply strolling across Rovaniemi’s iconic Jätkänkynttilä Bridge and taking in the phenomenon. Alternatively, easy hikes on fell tops close to the city centre provide magnificent views of the city bathing in the golden light in the middle of the night. Scores of activities are available under the Midnight Sun, and joining local events and parties is recommended. Here’s a chance to take “dancing the night away” to a whole other level!

One option to enjoy the beautiful summer day or night is paddling with SUP–board. At Ounaspaviljonki beach you can rent SUP (standuppaddle) board or book a guided tour along the river. Ranua Wildlife Park

RANUA WILDLIFE PARK is the home for the adorable arctic animals. Situated some 80 km south of Rovaniemi, it is a great destination for the whole family day trip. Here you can meet meet polar bears, wolves, wolverines, and many other species! To see them, you must walk the 2,8 km park trail in the middle of the forest. In late 2016, a cute polar bear cub was born in the Wildlife Park. Come and see how he spends his days playing with his mom! Angry Birds Park THE ANGRY BIRDS were born in Finland, and you can find them here everywhere! The park is close to the city centre and the admittance is free. The playground is full of fun equipment such as the giant slingshot, ropewalk, slides and swings.

HUSKY DOGS are absolutely adorable animals! A good place to meet them is the Bearhill Husky Kennel some 25 km north from Rovaniemi. The Huskies love to be petted and they will be very happy to meet you and your family! You will receve a guided tour of their kennel facilities and have a thorough insight into the life of huskies. The mushers will be happy to give you a short ride with a cart, however, the temperature should be cooler than 15°C. Otherwise, it is too hot for the huskies to run. Santa Park IN SANTAPARK, Santa’s underground cave, elves are having loads of fun everyday! Not only do they manage to get all the chores done, but they also have time to play. Here you can attend the elf school and learn some secret elfish skills, practice traditional old-fashioned elf writing and experience the joy of creation in the Elf Workshop. He likes to walk in the forest, listen to the birds sing, and take a sip of water out of a pure wild creek. He often stops on his journey to make a campfire, enjoys a cup of freshly made coffee and gazes into eternity. Santa also forages for mushrooms and berries so Mrs Santa could make some delicious jams out of them! This will make sure that these wonderful sources of vitamins are also available in the middle of the cold winter. Perhaps, all of this fresh air, wonderful superfoods, vitamins and hiking under the midnight sun are the secrets to his long age? You too can enjoy these natural wonders of Lapland, just like Santa does, and absolutely free of charge! Our “Everyman’s right” states that you can roam freely in the forest, set a tent in the wilderness, and collect these wonderful gifts of

There are many other fun things that you can do at the Santa Claus Village. First and foremost, go visit Santa’s Post office and send your postcards to your friends and family. Secondly, visit Santa’s Reindeer Farm, feed the reindeer, and get a little insight into the life of the reindeer herders. Thirdly, check out the amazing Finnish design shops by Iittala, Marimekko, Marttiini and the likes. You will definitely find some wonderful gifts for your loved ones! If you want to grab a bite to eat, pop by Santa’s Salmon place. They make the most delicious salmon right at the open fire! Another great place for lunch is the Reindeer farm’s restaurant, where you can taste many of the classical Lappish dishes from reindeer, berries and fish.

Adventures at the Santa’s Reindeer Farm REINDEER HERDING is one of Lapland’s most ancient livelihoods. In the old days, the Sami people used reindeer for transportation, food, and as a source of materials. Today, reindeer herding is still very important for Laplanders. Santa Claus Reindeer farm is a great place to get some knowledge about reindeer herding. Summer is vacation time for Rudolf and his friends. They have fulfilled their Christmas mission flawlessy and now deserve a little treat! For a small fee, you can enter the farm, meet the reindeer, feed them, touch them and take some pictures. Alternatively, you can join the reindeer herder’s day for a good full hour, feed the reindeer and cross the

Arctic Circle with them. You will also make a small souvenir, and taste salmon, prepared in a traditional way. Most of the year, the reindeer roam free in the forest. You can visit the place where they rest, call them by whistling and take a photo with them. If you want to have a truly unique experience, you can go hiking with the reindeer. You will see beautiful Finnish nature, try some fishing, and make a campfire. The reindeer will carry the picnic supplies in the traditional carrying bags on their back. Have fun!

WHERE TO STAY?

I am standing on top of fell Kuer near Ylläs, Lapland, Finland. It is 1AM but the sun is shining bright. In summer, there is no sunset for months here, and the sun just gently hovers the horizon. It is completely quiet here, on top of the fell. Only the wind gently sweeping over my face. There is no rush now, only the eternity ahead. I close my eyes and just enjoy the moment… The vibrant midnight sun is truly one of the most inspiring wonders of nature. And once you’ve experienced its magic in Ylläs, you will always want to come back!

Ylläs offers accommodation for every taste and budget. From the upscale treatment at the Aurora Estate boutique hotel, to the laid-back and inexpensive 7 Fells hostel, Ylläs has got it all. You can also stay at the apart-hotel or rent one of the many cottages in the area to enjoy your full freedom. Of course, you can just wander into the Pallas-Ylläs national park, set your tent there and literally have nature at your doorstep!

GETTING THERE

Ylläs is situated among the amazing sceneries of the seven little mountains called “fells”. A few hundred locals live in two villages of Ylläsjärvi and Äkäslompolo, with a ski centre in the middle. Ylläs is known as one of the most popular winter resorts in Lapland, but its summer is yet to be found. There’s room for everybody though. Ylläs can be easily reached via Kittilä airport with several daily flights from Helsinki. From Kittilä, it will take you about 45 min by bus or Airport taxi to get to Ylläs. Another option is the train from Helsinki to Kolari which in summer departs several times a week. You can also fly to Rovaniemi and continue from there, for example, with a rented car.

NATURE’S WONDERS

Speaking about nature, the beauty that surrounds Ylläs is simply amazing. Ylläs is also the Southern gate of the iconic Pallas-Ylläs national park. According to the studies, you can find world’s cleanest air in this pristine wilderness! Recently, the national park received the Destination award by the World Travel Tourism Council. There are many ways explore this natural wonder. Climb the tops of the surrounding fells and enjoy the breathtaking views! Some of the hilltops are pretty easy to reach even with kids. Head up, for example, to Varkaankuru ravine trail and conquer the panoramic fell Kellostapuli. The magical Kesänkijärvi lake is also a great place to visit. Caught between the two rugged fells, it is a well-hidden natural gem! Walk the nature trail along its Northern shore, or climb to the top of the nearby Kesänki fell. The path there will take

Once you’ve experienced the Midnight Sun Magic in Ylläs, you will always want to come back! you through the epic Devil’s ravine. The climb is rather steep, but the view is well worth the sweat! You can also embark on a canoeing trip on the Kesänkijärvi lake or go fishing there with Ylläs Guide company. There are many designated lean-to’s called “laavu” in the area with a fresh supply of firewood. Make a picnic and bake some sausages at the fire! Walk along the wooden paths and just feel the forest. Drink from a small creek, breath the crystal clear air, and listen to the silence! Wildlife is easy to spot here in its myriad of forms. By the way, if you need any tips about what to see and how to get there, just head to Visitor Centre Kellokas for an advice. Area map with marked trails can also be bought from any shop. SUMMER ACTIVITIES

Ylläs offers hundreds of kilometres of tracks for fatbikes and mountain bikes. What a great way to explore! And downhill fans will love the trails that depart from the top of the Ylläs fell. If you don’t have a bike or feel that you don’t have enough experience, do not worry! Local companies will be happy to lend you a bike or take you on a fatbiking tour. If you are in Ylläsjärvi area, head to Jemes Sport or Head Ski Rent & Sport shop. In Äkäslompolo, visit Team Sportia and Äkäslompolo sport shop. These guys are pretty crazy about wilderness! Their guided trips range from several hours to the whole day. Of course, there are tons of things to do on your own. Take the Gondola trip to the top of Ylläs fell, the highest point in the area, and enjoy the amazing view! A must place to visit with kids

is the Kotijänkä petting zoo with 300 different animals to see. The zoo also organises horseback riding lessons. They love horses here, and there’s another stable as well, Ylläksen Vaellushevoset, situated 15 km drive from Ylläs. One more thing to do with the whole family is to go play some disk golf. It’s easy and anyone can take part! SUMMER EVENTS

On July 14th–15th, Nuts Ylläs-Pallas trail running event takes place in Ylläs. The trails of 30 km, 55 km or 134 km will take the runners on top of the fells and deep into the wilderness. If extreme sports is not your thing, you can go listen to some local music at the ‘Ylläs Soikoon’ music festival on July 17th–23rd. As the nights start to get dark in autumn, on August 31st – September 3rd there is a film festival where you can watch the movies under the open sky… Or just see the Northern Lights as autumn is often their best season! LOCAL EXPERIENCES

From Mid-July, you can start foraging for berries. In Finland, we all have the ‘Everyman’s right’, which means that we can collect these wonderful gifts of nature, for free! You can just take a step into the forest and find some wild blueberries, orange cloudberries and red lingonberries. They are full of vitamins, so make sure to enjoy them! A good place to have lunch in the area is Rouhe restaurant in Äkäslompolo village, or Villi Pohjola cafe at Visitor Centre Kellokas. If you are looking for really amazing culinary experiences, head to the Aurora Estate restaurant in Ylläsjärvi. Here you will taste flawlessly prepared reindeer, fish, pasta and wonderful desserts. The food is changing according to the season, but head chef Sirly Schinmann will always have something special in store for you! If you are travelling to Ylläs in autumn, make sure to visit Haltiakammi restaurant 10 km from Äkäslompolo for some really amazing treats. More info about Ylläs at www.yllas.fi.

LEVI IS ONE OF THE MOST VIBRANT RESORTS IN LAPLAND, EVEN IN SUMMER! HERE ARE SOME OF THE MANY REASONS TO VISIT LEVI. LEVI IS A POPULAR WINTER RESORT, but

life doesn’t stop here in summer. There is a fair amount of services and activities available throughout the year, topped by the affordable prices of the low season. Levi’s wonderful hiking trails will take you deep into the wilderness and on top of the beautiful fells. For example, the Ice Age Trail, which circles the Levi Fell along the tree line, is a perfect choice for a day trip. Longer trails are also available, and you can navigate them by foot or by bike. The Levi Activity Park, situated at the Gondola area, offers a lot of fun for the whole family. At the Adventure Park you can test your agility and endurance skills by crossing various tracks and obstacles hung up in mid-air between the trees. There is also a summer sled park, minigolf course, children’s playground, tennis golf park and disc golf park. You can also take a ride on the Gondola ski lift and reach the Levi

summit, where you can access a peak trail, or simply enjoy the breath-taking sceneries surrounding the fell. Being in Levi, it is a must to visit the famous “Santa’s hut”. It surely looks different in summer, but the view is equally amazing. You can reach it from the Levi summit, or following the beforementioned Ice Age Trail. If you feel like having a cup of coffee or a taste of the local cuisine, head to the Break Sokos Hotel Levi, whose restaurant and bar are open every day in summer. The hotel is also one of my favourite accommodation options due to its location at the Levi centre, and the versatile breakfast. Levi is also known for its impeccable 18hole golf course, where one can enjoy the game around the clock, and for its bowling club, spa, well-being programmes, and riverside activities. The highlight of the summer is, of course, the Midsummer day. On Friday evening of

June 23rd, the whole village will gather on top of fell Levi, near the Tuikku restaurant. At midnight, a huge bonfire will be lit to celebrate the non-setting sun. What a view! Levi acts as a venue for many amazing sports events. The craziest of them is the Arctic Challenge, an endurance event that will take you and your partner up and down the Levi fell, in search for obstacles and challenges. Team spirit is the key to success here! Arctic Challenge is set to start on July 22nd. See www.arcticchallenge.fi. Another great event is the Ruska Marathon which will take place on September 2nd. The fact that it is held during the time of the beautiful autumn foliage is one of the reasons why hundreds of eager runners gather here every year. IN SEARCH OF THE AMETHYST AMETHYST MINE IN LUOSTO IS ONE OF THE MOST FASCINATING DESTINATIONS IN LAPLAND. HERE YOU CAN FIND YOUR LUCKY AMETHYST AND ADMIRE SOME BREATHTAKING VIEWS. THE AMETHYST MINE is one of the most lengendary attractions in Lapland. Hidden inside the PyhäLuosto National Park, it is well worth the journey. The Amethyst mine situated close to Luosto resort, which is 1,5 hour drive from Rovaniemi. It is June and Luosto welcomes us with the most beautiful summer weather. Only now does the nature really start to blossom above the Arctic Circle! We park at Ukkoluosto parking lot just South from the Luosto centre. From here, it takes another 45 minutes to walk towards the Lampivaara Fell on top of which the mine resides. As the mine is located within the national park, private motoring is not allowed here, and we have to get there by foot. The walk is pleasant enough and soon we reach the little Lampivaara cafe at the bottom of the hill. Guided tours to the mine start every hour and together with the others, we start our climb along the wooden path. The views one can enjoy from here are just amazing! In clear weather one can see the Pyhä Fell some 30 km away, as well as kilometres of beautiful rugged wilderness. Once we reach the top, we are taken to a wooden cabin where our guide tells us about the origin of the amethyst stone and about the geology of the region. Amethyst is a form of quartz, and apparently it takes millions of years for it to be formed. The name comes from the Greek amethystos which refers to belief that the stone reliefs alcohol intoxication. Curious! When amethyst was discovered in Lampivaara, an important decision was made: not to extract amethyst with heavy machinery, but to make the mine a tourist attraction. According to our guide, it would only take 5–10 years to dig everything up with machines, which would result in a giant hole on the ground — not a pleasant site for a national park! So the amethyst is dug here only by hand, with simple picks. With the present system, it will take

hundreds of years to mine it all, and the natural beauty of the place will be intact! Next we head to the open mining area, where we take our picks and start digging. According to our guide, amethyst is naturally found here in abundance, so there is no need to cheat and plant stones just for the sake of tourists. It is easy to believe, as one can find a variety of amethyst here as well as simpler white quartz stones. For the price of the entrance ticket, each visitor can take one amethyst stone, large enough to fit into one’s palm, for free. More stones can be purchased on the spot. The price can be negotiated upon with the guides, and usually they are not greedy. One can also buy readily polished amethyst stones of various sizes as well as amazing pieces of amethyst jewellery at the mine gift shop. Once we get down from the mine, we enjoy a tasty lunch at the mine cafe. For less than €10, the lunch includes soup of the day, bread, and beverage. The day’s walking around in fresh air has given us a healthy appetite! There is also a barbeque with firewood nearby, where you can cook your own picnic lunch. Many experienced tourists come here by mountain bikes with their own picnic supplies. The walk downhill from Lampivaara is easy, and soon we are back at Luosto centre. Here you can find the Little Mine Shop where amethyst stones and jewellery are also on offer. Luosto is a very tranquil destination in summer, so if you are looking for an ultimate hideaway, this would be the place! Recently, they have built some beautiful Arctic Eye igloos here, which have brought a splash of luxury into the middle of this pristine natural beauty. Hiking trails of Pyhä-Luosto National Park also offer some amazing experiences. If you are on a budget, you can set up your own tent out there in the pristine forest. This is as good as it gets!

WAITING FOR THE LIGHT

Summer is very short in Lapland, but it is another reason to cherish it! Every year, we must wait for 9 long months and live through dark autumn days and cold winter before we can walk in t-shirts again. The warmth is not the only perk of summer. The best thing about the it is the sheer amount of light! Starting from May, we have white nights in Lapland and by June, the Midnight Sun stars. Its light is energising, healing and inspiring. Finally, we can recharge our batteries after the dark winter days!

THE NATURE OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN

Midnight sun is caused by the fact that the Earth’s axis is tilted in its orbit around the Sun. It only happens North from the Arctic Circle or South from the Antarctic Circle. In summer the nights in Lapland are white for several months and for several weeks the sun does not set below the horizon. Lapland’s capital, Rovaniemi, is situated a few kilometers short of the Arctic Circle. The Midnight Sun can be experienced here roughly from June 7th to July 7th. However, in Lapland’s northernmost parts the sun stays up for 70 days, almost all summer! There is a downside to such proximity to the North, as the effect is reversed in winter when the days are very short. In winter, we must go through the period of darkness that we call ‘Kaamos’. Then, the sun does not rise at all and daylight lasts for only a few hours.

Sunlight around the clock provides for some perfect opportunities to enjoy summer! Many Finnish people do just that, because summer is known to be short and cold in Finland. You really have to cherish every moment of it! One of the best ways to do this is at the summer cottage by the lake. Here, one can enjoy a variety of relaxing activities, such as fishing, rowing, swimming and sunbathing! Midnight Sun also has an energizing effect on nature and people. When you need less sleep, you have more time to enjoy your favourite activities even throughout the night. Lapland offers brilliant opportunities for active sports, such as hiking, canoeing or biking. There are also many engaging events taking place, such as The Midnight Sun Film Festival in Sodankylä or Pyhä Unplugged, organized in the rugged surroundings of the fells.

HOW CAN YOU SLEEP?

Generally, in summer we need less sleep than in winter. Also, with vast amounts of light in summer, it is often difficult to fall asleep. This can be a problem not only for tourists, but locals alike. A good tip is to use heavy curtains and blinds. Also, if you do a lot of sports, your body will be more tired and you will get sleep easily. However, if you don’t fall asleep, do not worry. Relax or go for a walk and enjoy this amazing light!

The Midsummer day is, of course, the highlight of the summer! The whole country just takes several days off and heads to the countryside in order to enjoy the company of friends, or visit the Finnish sauna! At midnight, they light huge bonfires to mark the longest day of the year!

PHOTOGRAPHY TOURS

Midnight sun is for many reasons a photographer’s dream. Imagine the most beautiful sunset, lasting for 3-4 hours nonstop! All this inspiring, vibrant, yellowishreddish light! That is why I usually spend my summer nights out, taking loads of photos and videos. The best places to catch the midnight sun are the hill-tops and fells where you can have the best perspective. River and lake shores are also good options, as you can capture the beautiful light reflecting in the water! This summer, I will be organising my Midnight sun photography tours, and you can join me! Together, we will be exploring the best locations in the area. I will share with you my photography techniques and gear, and we will take lots of pictures. We will also enjoy a picnic! The price for a tour is 120€ per person. Of course, we will only do a tour if the weather is good! The tour lasts at least several hours, until the morning. FIRST AURORAS OF THE SEASON

Summer is a vacation time for an aurora hunter like myself. During the summer months, there is too much light at night to see the auroras or starry sky. Only towards the middle of August the nights finally become dark enough to see the lights. As usually, I am anxiously waiting for the season! During the past years, I was able to see the first auroras somewhere between 15th–22nd of August. The first show of the season is usually not the greatest, but certainly some of the sweets! However, with dark autumn approaching, the chances are getting better with every night!

EQUINOX AURORAS = BEST AURORAS

The statistics have showed that tere a connection between the equinoxes and auroras. Equinoxes are, of course, the times when the day and night are equal, in September and March. Usually, there is an uptick in aurora activity during the 2-3 weeks before and after the equinoxes and the auroras are generally brighter. For a long time, the mechanism behind it was a mystery, however, in 2006 the scientists have found the answer. During equinoxes the Earth is at a certain angle that enables for solar wind to flow more easily and reach our atmosphere. This results in a higher auroral activity! There are many other reasons why autumn auroras are the best. First of all, it is not yet too cold outside and we can comfortably stay all night watching for the lights! Secondly, the rivers and lakes are usually not covered with ice yet, which makes possible to take amazing pictures with auroras reflecting in the water!

WHAT CAUSES THE AURORAS

Aurora Borealis is caused by charged particles from the sun bumping into the Earth’s magnetic field. In higher layers of the Earth’s atmosphere, these particles

excite protons and electrons of Oxygen and Nitrogen, making them release energy. This happens at the altitudes between 80 km and 600 km above the Earth’s surface. Northern Lights can usually be seen at the latitudes around and above Arctic circle in the north and below the Antarctic Circle in the south. Sometimes, when a geomagnetic storm happens, the “auroral oval” temporarily shifts down in the northern hemisphere and up in the southern hemisphere.

It takes some time to understand it, but generally speaking, yellow, orange and red colours mean a higher likelihood of Auroras. HOW DO I SEE AURORAS?

Usually, the best time to see the auroras is somewhere between 21PM and midnight, although that really depends. Sometimes they come earlier, and sometimes later. However, you will greatly improve your chances of seeing the aurora borealis if you happen to be outside at that time. Of course, we are talking about nights with clear skies, or at least partially cloudy. In order to see the auroras in their full glory, you should try to find a place with less artificial light. Hill-tops or lake shores are often the perfect spots. If you are in Rovaniemi and you can’t get out of the city centre, go to Arktikum museum. The park near the river shore is one of the best places to see the lights in city centre. The top of Ounasvaara fell is also a good spot.

AURORA FORECASTS

Aurora forecast is a hard job. Often, the auroras do not show up in spite of a good forecast, or vice versa. Aurora forecasts are based on monitoring the Sun’s activity. Usually, we can only have have reliable forecasts for few days in advance. This is because it takes 3–4 days for solar wind to reach Earth. There are several places online where you can access the Aurora forecasts for free. They include Space Weather Prediction Centre (swpc.noaa.gov), Spaceweather.com, as well as SpaceWeatherLive.com. “Auroras

AURORA TOURS

Last winter, I started organising auroras tours for small groups, willing to hunt the auroras with me. Together, we shared a lot of wonderful auroras moments and I’ve also made some good friends! Due to good calculation, a lot of effort and a bit of luck, we saw the auroras with most of my guests. Often, we had to travel hours to find ourselves some clear skies, and usually, we were rewarded! There were a couple of nights though when the weather did not cooperate, in spite of good aurora activity. Starting from end of August, the tours will be back! As usually, I will always tell you what are the chances to see the auroras on a given night. We will depart on a tour only if it make sense. If the forecast is bad, we better stay home! The tours are for groups of 2–6 people and include transportation, a good snack, aurora photos and videos, lending my professional camera gear and lots of talk about the aurora! Здравствуй, белый мишка! В ЗООПАРКЕ РАНУА отличные новости! 25 ноября 2016 года в семействе белых медведей случилось пополнение — родился маленький очаровательный медвежонок! Это уже второй белый мишка, который родился у белых медведей в Рануа. Их первенец, медвежонок Ранзо, родился в 2011 году, но в возрасте трех лет уехал к своей невесте в зоопарк города Вена в Австрии. Первые месяцы новорожденный мишка провел вместе с мамой, в теплой и уютной берлоге. Несмотря на то, что большую часть времени мишка проводил спя рядом с мамой, все остальное время игрался, показав свой неугомонный характер. Когда медвежонок достаточно подрос и окреп, было решено выпустить его в вольер. 15 марта 2017 года дверь в берлогу открылась, и любопытным взорам фотографов, репортеров и обычных посетителей показались две мохнатые фигуры.

Первой на улицу осмелилась выйти мама. Она становилась на задние лапы и нюхала воздух. Делала она это для того, чтобы убедится что папы нет рядом. Он заблаговременно был помещен в отдельный вольер, так как в природе они очень ревниво относятся к своим детишкам. Когда мама убедилась, что все в порядке, наружу вышел и маленький мишка. Сначала пугливо смотрел на окружающий его мир. Все было для него ново — белый снег, морозный воздух и даже белый свет. Освоившись, он начал осматривать свои новые владения. Сейчас мишка уже подрос и проводит целые дни за игрой, используя свою маму как мягкую игрушку, батут и спарринг-партнера. У медвежонка еще нет имени, и придумать его предлагается посетителям зоопарка! Любой желающий может предложить свой вариант на кассе или через сайт зоопарка до 31 августа 2017.

Победитель получит пакет размещения для всей семьи в коттеджах Гуло-гуло и приватный визит в зоопарк. В настоящий момент зоопарк готовится к наплыву посетителей. Зоопарк Рануа уже является одной из главных достопримечательностей Лапландии с 100.000 посетителями ежегодно. В 2012 году, когда медвежонок Ранзо был маленький, зоопарк посетило 150.000 человек, поэтому ожидается, что 2017 год станет рекордным в истории зоопарка. Зоопарк Рануа находится в 80 км от Рованиеми и работает каждый день в году. В летние месяцы в зоопарке каждый день будут проходить показательные кормления, чтобы животные подошли еще ближе к зрителям. Время кормления белых медведей — с 12.30 до 13.00. Туризм бьет рекорды в Лапландии 2016 ГОД СТАЛ РЕКОРДНЫМ для туристической сферы Лапландии. По данным государственной компании Finavia, отвечающей за финские аэропорты, объем авиаперевозок в Лапландию увеличился на 21%. Примечательно, что число иностранных пассажиров при этом возросло на 27%! Основным катализатором стал возросший интерес азиатов к Лапландии. Количество китайских пассажиров увеличилось на 167% по сравнению с 2015 годом. Охотнее же всего в Рованиеми путешествуют туристы из Израиля. Они на первом месте, далее следуют ев-

ропейцы и азиаты. Российские туристы на 8-м месте. Бьют рекорды и гостиницы. В Рованиеми число ночевок возросло на 17,%, а в декабре был показан рекордный рост — 31%! За весь 2016 год в Рованиеми было более 550.000 зарегистрированных ночевок, но к этой цифре стоит прибавить и тысячи туристов забронировавших размещение через сайт airb’n’b, посчитать которые не представляется возможным. Великое княжество В 1812 году Финляндия входит в состав Российской Империи как Великое княжество Финляндское. 30 ноября 1939 года Советский союз атаковал Финляндию. Линия Маннергейма и боевой дух финнов помогли отстоять независимость, но Финляндия лишилась 11% территории и Выборга. Из-за отсутствия лучших союзников, Финляндия выступила на стороне Германии в 1941– 1944 гг. и имела кратковременный реванш. Лапландия стала военной базой немцев. Война для финнов закончилась в 1944 году, когда им пришлось ополчиться против своих бывших союзников. Отступащие немцы применили тактиву выжженой земли и полностью разрушили Лапландию.

На первый снег — в Рука! КУРОРТ РУКА ОТКРЫВАЕТ СЕЗОН 2017–18 УЖЕ 6.10.2017. РУКА ПЛАНИРУЕТ ПОДГОТОВИТЬ К ЭТОМУ ВРЕМЕНИ ДВА СКЛОНА. В ОКТЯБРЕ В РУКА еще достаточно тепло. Температура на горнолыжном курорте плюсовая, но по улицам уже вовсю снуют сноубордисты и лыжники со своим инвентарем. Они собрались на открытие сезона, ведь в 2016 году первый склон в Рука заработал уже 10 октября в 10.00! Это не просто маркетинговый ход. С каждым годом поклонников горнолыжного спорта становится все больше. Тем не менее, изменение климата — это реальность, и зима приходит на север все позднее и позднее. Лыжные центры используют искусственное оснежение, однако для него требуются отрицательные температуры. А что делать, если холода еще не наступили?

Курорт Рука решил эту задачу следующим образом. Зимой 2016 года было заготовлено 30.000 м3 снега. Делать искусственный снег намного экономичнее и экологичнее в морозные январские дни, чем поздней осенью. На лето снег был накрыт специальным отражающим материалом и, несмотря на жару, его сохранилось достаточно для открытия первого склона. Благодарны как любители, так и профессионалы. В частности, олимпийская чемпионка по слоупстайлу Энни Рукаярви начинает свой сезон в Рука: — Это так здорово, что можно тренироваться у себя дома! Не надо летать куда-то, напимер, в Альпы — говорит Энни.

Опыт с ранним началом сезона оказался более чем удачным, поэтому зимой 2017 года в Рука запаслись рекордным количеством снега. В планах открыть два полноценных склона — слаломный и склон с парковыми фигурами. Сезон начнется уже 6 октября 2017 г. Больше информации на ski.rukafinland.ru.

ный курорт Рука открывает свои двери для катания в новом сезоне!» — эта новость не могла не удивить нас. «Это шутка?» — спрашиваем мы с Вадимом, но узнав об уникальном эксперименте по консервации снега на летний период, быстро кидаем доски в чехол и вот уже мы сидим в автомобиле на полпути в Лапландию. Вадим Таран — мой хороший друг, сноубордист, генерал-лейтенант пивных войск, более известен как Тэч. Будучи прорайдером ещё в далеком 2012-м, Вадим успел много где побывать, и за это время нехило поднял уровень своего катания. Вернувшись не так давно после долгосрочного обучения из-за бугра (США), Тэч сразу же ошеломительно ворвался в индустрию Российского сноубординга со своим непревзойденным стилем security-boss’a и начал разносить все парковые и стритовые споты в пух и прах. Сейчас Таран патрулирует бренды «terror snow» и «rattle snake».

Привыкшие к стандартному открытию сезона где-нибудь в Коробицыно на небольшом плевке снега, прямо под пылящей пушкой и на одной «чёрной трубке», мы не имели ни малейшего понятия, чего ждать от финского курорта в начале октября. Добравшись до пункта назначения, мы не поверили своим глазам. Целая трасса, полноценно заполненная снегом, с работающим кресельным подъёмником и даже несколькими рабочими спотами. Едва заселившись, мы сразу же побежали на гору и… о чудо! Мы увидели мини-парк! Конечно же это не полноценный «Рука-парк» с кинковыми рэйлами, но что ещё нужно на открытии сезона, когда ты только начинаешь раскатываться после долгого перерыва? Очень порадовала мягкая приятная погода и слэшовый снег, прощающий любые ошибки на фигурах. Тёплая плюсовая температура, позволяющая кататься в кофтах, была как нельзя кстати. Дружественная атмосфера, нет толп и очере-

дей, хорошие райдеры — мы чувствовали себя «среди своих». Знаменитые финские профи также приехали открывать сезон в Руку. Олимпийская медалистка и неоднократная чемпионка мира Энни Рукаярви шредила бок-о-бок с нами и врывалась на все парковые фигуры. Так здорово увидеть звёзд мирового сноубординга в столь непринужденной обстановке, просто катающимися «for fun» и получающими бурю позитива от происходящего. Сразу же вспомнились все старые трюки, а новые тут же полетели в копилку к имеющемуся арсеналу. В-общем, в это время нам было не до скуки, уж поверьте! Нужно сказать что каких-то заоблачных ожиданий мы не испытывали, когда собрались в эту поезду, но все сложилось именно таким образом, что уезжать обратно в родные широты России нам абсолютно не хотелось. Уж слишком здорово пролетели эти несколько дней на курорте Рука!

УЗНАЙТЕ О ЯРКИХ МОМЕНТАХ В ИСТОРИИ СТРАНЫ И ОКУНИТЕСЬ В КУЛЬТУРУ ЛАПЛАНДИИ! 100 ЛЕТ — это значительный срок для человека, но не такой уж большой для страны. В этом смысле Финляндия достаточно молодая страна. Тем не менее, финно-угорская культура и история насчитывают сотни, а то и тысячи лет. Погрузиться в финскую культуру вам помогут культурные достопримечательности Рованиеми — музеи Арктикум, Пильке и Корунди. МУЗЕЙ АРКТИКУМ тоже празднует в 2017 году юбилей, ему исполняется 25 лет. Арктикум знакомит посетителей с бытом коренных народов Арктики — ненцев, эскимосов, инуитов, якутов. Изменение климата и среды обитания губительно влияет на жизнь и обычаи этих народностей. Научный центр Арктикума занимается исследованиями арктических народов и делится своими находками на выставках музея. Тут же можно узнать и о народных промыслах лапландцев — оленеводах, охотниках и рыбаках. Весьма интересна и саамская культура — представителей этой народности осталось в стране всего несколько тысяч, однако ведется работа по сохранению их культуры и языков.

МУЗЕЙ СОВРЕМЕННОГО ИСКУССТВА КОРУНДИ — это частичка живой истории города, который отпразднует в 2017 году свой 30-летний юбилей. Здание музея постройки 1933 года является одним из немногих, переживших войну. В музее собрано более 3000 произведений финского искусства последних десятилетий, которые приоткрывают завесу финской души и меланхолии Севера. Летом 2017 года Корунди станет местом проведения фольклорного фестиваля, посвященного традиционной финской музыке.

Обучение в Рованиеми ОБУЧЕНИЕ В ФИНСКИХ ВУЗАХ СТАЛО ПЛАТНЫМ ДЛЯ РОССИЯН С 2017 ГОДА. СТОИТ ЛИ ПЛАТИТЬ ЗА ВЫСШЕЕ ОБРАЗОВАНИЕ В ЛАПЛАНДИИ? РАЗБЕРЕМСЯ! ОБУЧЕНИЕ В ВУЗАХ ФИНЛЯНДИИ раньше было бесплатным для россиян, однако, с 2017 года финский парламент ввел плату для нерезидентов ЕС. Вузы сами могут назначать размер платы, но также имеют право и на выдачу стипендий. В Рованиеми действует два вуза — Лапландский университет и Университет прикладных наук (Lapland UAS). Стоимость обучения одинаковая — 8000€ за академический год! Немалая сумма, однако, стипендии покроют от 50 до 80%. Лапландский университет, например, оплатит половину стоимости обучения новым студентам, а четверть студентов, показавших отличные знания во время вступительных экзаменов, получит образование бесплатно! Университет предлагает двухгодичное обучение в магистратуре на английском языке. Среди направлений — Дизайн и искусство, Медиапедагогика, Tуризм и культура. В университет прикладных наук Lapland UAS можно поступить на бакалавриат, сразу после школы. Обучение длится 4 года. Предлагаемые направления — Информационные технологии, Бизнес, Туризм и Уход за больными. Поступившие в 2017 г. студенты получат стипендию в размере 80% от платы в первый год обучения (останется 1600€), а со второго по четвертый учебный год стипендия составит 60% (плата 3200€ в год). Единственное условие — хорошая

успеваемость. Те студенты, которые закончат обучение в срок или раньше, получат последний год бесплатно. Студенту также необходимо самостоятельно оплачивать проживание и питание. Наличие достаточных средств нужно подтвердить для получения визы — положить сумму 6720€ на счет в финском банке. Сумма составлена из расчета 560€ в месяц, на 12 месяцев вперед, так как визу дают на год. На практике примерно так и получается. Проживание в квартирном студенческом общежитии Domus Arctica — от 250€ и выше, на еду уходит 300€ в месяц. Инвестиции серьезные. Что можно получить взамен? Финская система образования считается одной из лучших в мире. Дело даже не в этом. Она просто другая! Основная отличие от русских школ — вас никто не будет заставлять что-то делать. Кроме того, у вас полная свобода выбора интересующих вас курсов. Большая часть обучения идет самостоятельно — это поиск информации, письменные работы, практические задания. По началу такая свобода расслабляет, но потом быстро понимаешь, что никто за тебя учиться не будет. Между студентами и профессорами царит равенство — это коллеги, у которых общая задача. Система настроена таким образом, чтобы у вас были максимально комфортные условия для обучения, но самое главное — она предлагает

Квалифицированных специалистов много, а конкуренция большая. Деревня Санта Клауса ДЕРЕВНЯ САНТА КЛАУСА — это главная достопримечательность всей Лапландии. ведь именно здесь живет добрый сказочник Санта Клаус. Вход в деревню и встреча с Йоулупукки всегда бесплатны. Однако, если вы захотите фото об этой памятной встрече, придется раскошелиться. Эльфы, веселые помощники Санты, снимают профессиональные фото и видео всех его встреч. Вы можете купить фото формата A4 за 30€, которое напечатают тут же, либо приобрести цифровой пакет для скачивания за 40€, который включает в себя несколько фото, а также видео вашего визита. Стоит иметь в виду, что Деревня Санта Клауса и СантаПарк — это не одно и то же. СантаПарк — это большая пещера эльфов, которая находится в километре от Деревни. Находясь в Деревне, конечно же стоит заглянуть на Почту Санта Клауса. Дети со всего мира шлют Йолупукки свои рождественские пожелания, а в обязанности эльфов входит читать детские письма и, конечно же, рассказывать о них Йоулупукки. На почте Санта Клауса можно отправить открытки и письма

со специальной печатью, и если вы положите письма в оранжевый ящик, то они отправятся в путь тут же, а если в красный, то они будут ждать отправки к следующему Рождеству. Одно из интересных мест в Деревне — это оленеводческая ферма, которая находится за Офисом Санты. В летнюю программу входит посещение фермы, знакомство с оленями, их кормление и фото с ними. Цена — всего лишь 5€. На ферме также есть ресторан , где можно отведать местной кухни (открыт 6.7–31.8.) Другой вариант где перекусить — это лапландский чум рядом с почтой, где кормят лососем, поджаренным тут же на костре. Пальчики оближешь! Если вас интересуют местные, но качественные сувениры, рекомендуем посетить фирменные магазины известных финских дизайн-брендов Маримекко, Ииттала, а также магазин ювелирной мастерской Тайгакору. Они находятся в одном здании с Офисом Санты. В деревне есть магазин местной фабрики ножей Марттиини, продукция которого станен хорошим подарком для любого мужчины!

Оленеводческая ферма Санта Клауса ОЛЕНЕВОДЧЕСКИЙ ПРОМЫСЕЛ всегда играл значительную роль в жизни лапландцев. Для саамов это был и транспорт, и пропитание, и источник самых разнообразных материалов — шкуры, оленьего рога и т.д. Оленеводство процветает и по сей день. Приобщиться к жизни оленеводов можно навестив ферму Санта Клауса, которая находится позади Офиса Санты. Летом олени отдыхают, но вы все равно можете их увидеть, потрогать и покормить их, и даже сделать фото с ними. Такая короткая экскурсия стоит 5€ с человека. Мастерская «Тайгакору» МАСТЕРСКАЯ «ТАЙГАКОРУ» ДЕЛАЕТ УНИКАЛЬНЫЕ ПЕРСТНИ С ЗОЛОТЫМИ САМОРОДКАМИ, А ТАКЖЕ УКРАШЕНИЯ ПО МОТИВАМ СААМСКИХ ПОВЕРИЙ. ЮВЕЛИРНАЯ МАСТЕРСКАЯ «ТАЙГАКОРУ» была основана в 1981 году ювелиром Юхой Янгером. «Тайгакору» означает «таежное украшение». Мастерская черпает свои идеи и вдохновение в лапландской природе и фауне. Успех к мастерской пришел сразу, ведь в 1982 году серия украшений «Куропатка», которую сделал Юха, выиграла конкурс на лучший ювелирный дизайн в Финляндии. Сейчас, 36 лет спустя, Юха до по прежнему стоит во главе компании, которая трудоустраивает шесть ювелиров. Украшения делают как из золота, так и серебра, и они подходят под любой бюджет. «Тайгакору» производит украшения и обереги, навеянные саамскими поверьями. Это — украшения «Риску», символизирующие движение солнца, а также обереги «Комсио», которые подвешивали над детской люлькой. Саамы верили, что их легкое позвякивание защищает детей

от злых духов. Серия украшений «Шаманский бубен» основывается на символах, которые саамские шаманы наносили на свои бубны. Это — образы солнца, луны, богов плодородия, ветра, охоты, изображения животных. Настоящую славу «Тайгакору» принесли перстни с лапландскими самородками, которые добывают золотоискатели на реке Лемменйоки. Перстни с самородками делаются на заказ или небольшими сериями, но они все равно уникальны. — В мире есть всего несколько ювелиров, которые используют золотые самородки, — говорит Юха Янгер, — поэтому это настоящие произведения искусства. Основу перстней можно изготовить из белого или желтого золота, а кроме самородков их можно украсить бриллиантами. Цена таким перстням, конечно, немаленькая, однако мастерская использует ручной труд вместе с 3Д-моде-

лированием. Этот способ снижает цену украшений, а также дает возможность воплотить в жизнь любые идеи клиента. Перед изготовлением украшения клиенту посылают графический экскиз. Зоопарк Рануа Если у вас есть свободный день съездите в деревушку Рануа, что в часе езды от Рованиеми. Хоть это и зоопарк, животные здесь живут в просторных вольерах. Гуляя по петляющей по лесу тропе вы увидите полярных сов, росомах, волков, бурых и даже полярных медведей. У последних недавно было пополнение в семействе. Мама с детенышем живут в соседних вольерах с папой, но и то и дело роют к нему подкоп! Кстати, летом в зоопарке в 12.30 устраивают показательные кормления медведей — это удачное время увидеть животных поближе. В главном здании зоопарка есть ресторан, где подают обед в формате шведского стола, а рядом находятся коттеджи Гуло Гуло на случай если захотите остановиться на ночлег.

4. Научный центр Пильке и музей Арктикум

С детьми постарше будет интересно сходить в интерактивный научный центр Пильке и краеведческий музей Арктикум. Оба находятся как раз по-соседству! Музей Арктикум стал визитной карточной города, и все благодаря его уникальной архитектуре. Красивый стеклянный купол музея устремился прямо на север. Внутри можно посмотреть северное сияние, узнать о жизни коренных народов Арктики, а также об изменение климата. В соседнем ценре Пильке все экспонаты интерактивные — можно все потрогать и понажимать разные кнопочки. Здесь и есть головоломки, и игра в охоту, и лесное караоке. Арктические деликатесы РЕСТОРАН «АРКТИЧЕСКИЙ БУЛЬВАР» открылся вместе с гостиницой Arctic Light Hotel в 2015 году. Здесь предлагают отведать деликатесы Севера, приготовленные на современный лад. Львиную долю ингредиентов составляют ягоды, грибы и зелень, которые идеально сочетаются с лососем или оленем. По мнению шеф-повара ресторана, лапландские ингредиенты настолько хороши, что и не нужно придумывать ничего сверхестественного. Главное, чтобы они гармонично сочетались! Весной 2017 года меню ресторана обновилось и мы сразу отправились снимать пробу. Вечер мы начали с коктелей Johka из брусники и Puro с черникой и лаймом — хороши! На первое мы заказали горшочек с копченым языком оленя. Нежный копченный вкус напомнил финский лес и приятно похрустывающий костер. Эффектная палитра со све-

жепросоленным арктическим гольцом и икры из водорослей была выше всех похвал. Третья закуска, которую взяли на пробу — маринованные белые грибы с клюквенным джемом и гренками. Пожалуй, это лучшее вегетарианское блюдо, которое мы пробовали за последнее время. Гвоздем программы стал олений стейк с дымком под сосновым соусом, с лапландской картошкой и корнеплодами. Оленье мясо является большим деликатесом, а с таким сопровождением он превосходит все ожидания. Отдельно стоит отметить подачу блюда. Мясо приносят в задымленном колоколе, и когда его поднимают, вы ощущаете приятный запах финской сауны. Ничуть не уступил и арктический голец с ячменным ризото под соусом из лобстера. Для десерта местечко всегда найдется! Ни одно меню не может обойтись без

шоколада. Тающий во рту шоколадный мусс с дикими лапландскими ягодами и черничным джемом был превосходен. Сюрпризом вечера оказалось сорбе из облепихи с воздушным бисквитом со вкусом ели и соусом из дегтя. Необычно, и такая гармония вкуса! В-общем, «Арктический бульвар» достоин всех похвал. Кстати, если хотите провести вечер со вкусом в Арктик Лайт Отеле есть прекрасная терраса, где можно выпить напитков и перекусить. Еще вариант, который никогда не подведет — это ресторан «Нили». Здесь вы можете отведать классические лапландские блюда в аутентичной атмосфере. Это, например, оленья поджарка с пюре, соленым огурцом и брусничным вареньем. На десерт возьмите традиционный лапландский сыр с морошковым вареньем. Такой можно найти только в Лапландии!

Прилавок с «арктическим мороженым» работает круглый год в кафе Choco-Deli в центре Рованиеми, а летом специальный киоск фабрики будет работать на городской набережной. «Поляр» Лапландский сыр Название лапландского сыра «лейпяююсто» (leipäjuusto) переводится как «хлебный сыр», так как он готовится в печи и внешне напоминает лепешку.
