CULTURE ON INDUSTRY INDUSTRY ON CULTURE
The renovation of the old slaughterhouse of Porto
An intervention in the city of Porto means dealing with a vast landscape, characterised by a robust industrial identity. When we talk about Porto, we are talking about an urban tissue composed of vast spaces: fragments of the industrial age that are located within the urban centre. The theme of urban mending is current and refers above all to the suburban areas of the eastern area. The Campanhã Valley is located on this limit. Until now, the proposals made in the area have made up for the lack of infrastructures but have not crossed the limit of the road system, which physically divides Campanhã from the urban centre. In this context lies the old slaughterhouse of Porto: an area of 25 thousand square meters now abandoned for two decades, adjacent to the railway line. With the following project, we want to propose a response to the redevelopment of the old industrial complex. The project stems from the public competition for the development of the Campanhã Valley, in favour of the urban rehabilitation between the city and the outlying areas. The project consists of reflections concerning the role of voids and the city, in particular, the peripheral city, precarious from the urban and social point of view. These concepts translate into an architectural project that finds its roots in the history of its territory. Using the notions of fragmentation, absence, memory and identity, we highlight the relationship between them within the city, being fundamental for the understanding of the place. From the programmatic choice for the enhancement of the local economic and cultural heritage to the strategic choices measured with the substantial identity of the area, the project crosses the history of the place, keeping clear the boundary between what belongs to the memory and the new elements that are going to be inserted. The intervention, therefore, aims to translate the issues addressed in an indissoluble relationship between theory and practice.

THE CITY OF PORTO
The development of the city of Porto has always been influenced by the presence of natural barriers, that is the view on the Atlantic Ocean and the proximity to the Douro river. These limits have allowed the economic development of the northern area of the country, characterized above all by wine and textile production.

The area of Vila Nova de Gaia, beyond the river, is characterized by the presence of the cellars that go up to the area of Pinhão, a valley renowned for the production of Port wine, thanks to natural terraces and optimal solar orientation. The textile production areas instead are spread within the central and peripheral area of Porto. Since the IXX century, it has constituted the most active sector in the area. Even today, the North of Portugal is one of the largest textile production centres in Europe, thanks to its geographical position, low production costs and developed technologies in the field of fabrics. “Farftetch” is an example. During the 20th century, building speculation and the strong presence of workers in the city caused a peripheral phenomenon in which the residential centres moved to the Matosinhos coast. In a few years, the centre is dramatically depopulated. Today, urban expansion continues in the eastern zone, towards the district of Campanhã, divided from the city by the ring road that delimits the whole central area of Porto: a limit that has determined the creation of the so-called “Terrain Vague”.

The complex is mainly divided into three functional bands, the first that runs along the ring road presents spaces dedicated to start-ups and companies in the textile sector, including ateliers for fashion students. The central strip presents an exhibition path that runs through the area until you reach the book-shop and bar that overlooks the future pedestrian connection with the metro. The same museum path defines one of the horizontal circulation axes: a public passage that crosses the various buildings connecting the square and the pedestrian crossing. The last band, instead, is dedicated to supporting functions for the museum and offices: the refreshment area, the public library and the museum archives.

The museum area consists of several spaces characterized by the flexibility of the elements that allow different configurations in the distribution of exhibitors and rooms. Space is defined by light envelopes that pass through the existing structure, thus constituting the circulation axes and the museum rooms.
B’
C’
F’
The main entrance of the area takes place through the square that overlooks the road that connects the neighbourhood park with the slaughterhouse. Access to the museum areas is recognizable thanks to the blocking of services that comes out, creating continuity between inside and outside. Public space is defined by different playground areas for children and shaded areas with orange trees.

B
The permanent exhibit takes place in the long corridor that crosses all the museum spaces. The arches and openings that are crossed characterize the extremely longitudinal space with a syncopated rhythm of elements that follow each other, thus fragmenting the infinite sense of the path.

The existing architecture becomes the scenography of the fashion shows or exhibitions: the arches act as the architectural backdrop to the works, surrounded by light curtains that structure the complexity of the space. The paths that are created give the possibility to expose both inside and outside the casings, giving a certain continuity highlighted by the rhythm of the curves that follow each other between arch and arch.
