THAT'S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR: ACPL 34TH ANNUAL POETRY CONTEST AUTHOR VISIT: MATT DE LA PEÑA “Growing up, I never could’ve imagined anything like this. Me and books? Reading? Nah, man, I was a working-class kid. A half-Mexican hoop head. I spent all my afterschool hours playing ball down at the local pickup spot off Birmingham. I dreamed of pretty girls and finger rolls over outstretched hands. But age has a way of giving a guy perspective. Turns out I was wrong. Turns out I’ve been a reader all along.” Matt de la Peña Acclaimed author Matt de la Peña will be speaking about his life, his work, and the impressive impact of books. Matt de la Peña is the New York Times Bestselling, Newbery Medal winning author of six young adult novels (including Mexican WhiteBoy, We Were Here and The Living) and two picture books (A Nations Hope and Last Stop on Market Street). Matt received his MFA in creative writing from San Diego State University and his BA from the University of the Pacific, where he attended school on a full athletic scholarship for basketball. de la Peña currently lives in Brooklyn, NY with his family.
