Annual ACPL Author Fair 2016 Join us at the Main Library for the sixth annual Author Fair on Saturday, November 12! Author Visit: Wanda and Jean Brunstetter Back by popular demand! Author Wanda Brunstetter returns to the Allen County Public Library! Wanda (and daughter-in-law Jean) will be promoting their newest release The Hawaiian Quilt. Two other nonfiction books will also be available in September: Amish Quilts and Wanda E. Brunstetter’s Amish Friends Harvest Cookbook. Both Brunstetter’s will be answering questions and signing your books! Many of Wanda’s books will be available for purchase onsite (cash only please). We hope to see you there!

That's What Friends Are For: The ACPL 34th Annual Poetry Contest Entries are now being accepted in the 34th annual Poetry Contest at the Library. School-age children and teens are invited to submit an original poem on the theme of “That’s What Friends Are For.” Entries will be accepted from September 12 through November 7, 2016. Information is available at the Main Library and all branch locations. The Award Ceremony will take place on Saturday, December 10.

Grades 9–12: This workshop is for students who love words. Each session will be a mix of workshopping drafts, inclass writing exercises, craft talks where we learn about strategies to improve our work, and discussion of contemporary poetry and prose. Calling all toddlers! This art class is for you! Caregivers and toddlers are welcome to come to the Program Room in Children's Services any time during the hour to make a fun, age-appropriate craft. During this program, we'll be creating process art, which focuses on the process of making artwork instead of the product of the finished artwork. Toddlers will have lots of fun stamping, crinkling, and smearing their art supplies to create a masterpiece that's sure to have a place of honor on the refrigerator! While we will try to be as clean as possible, art projects have the potential to be messy, so it's recommended that adults and little ones wear old clothes!

Discover the wonder of 3D printing in this hands-on class! Children ages 6 to 11 will learn the basics of designing a 3D object, and they will also learn how to use a 3D printer. While we will not have enough time to print our designs during the class, participants will receive a free print certificate to use at a later date. Take part in the Fright Night frivolity and stop by Children's Services to make some spooky (but not too spooky) crafts! Because we have several young and easily frightened children in Children’s Services, this area of the library is “Zombie Free.” If you are heavily madeup in zombie attire and make up, we encourage you to enjoy every other part of Fright Night while little ones and their families enjoy “Not-So-Frightening Fun” in Children’s Services.

This is a Genealogy Family History Month program led by Allison Singleton. Many parents want their children to be interested in their family’s history but fostering that interest may be a challenge. The Genealogy Center can engage parents and children alike with a Family History Day. It is a daylong program with two classroom-style lessons and guided research time to explore the collection. Each child will receive a worksheet, tailored to his or her age, experience, and grade level. MINECRAFT BUILDING CHALLENGE

SALT BEYOND THE BOOK

In September and October 2016, at the Allen County Public Library, we will be celebrating Indiana’s bicentennial and local author Helen Frost’s book Salt. Ms. Frost is an internationally acclaimed author who lives in Fort Wayne. For this series of programs, we'll focus on her novel-in-verse, Salt: A Story of Friendship in a Time of War, which is set in the Fort Wayne area during the tumultuous time period around 1812. It was the recipient of the Children’s Book Prize from the New York Historical Society. Join us as we explore a wide variety of activities and topics related to Salt: A Story of Friendship in a Time of War. Activities will be held at many of our library locations and will be offered for all ages. All activities are open to the public; some require registration. Bring your stuffed animal to storytime on Friday, or anytime during the day. Let it spend the night at the library, and return Saturday to pick it up. We'll have pictures of their adventures at the library and donuts and juice to enjoy when you pick it up!

Learn how to make a tote bag on the sewing machine and how to use the vinyl cutter to customize it. This is a two day class; you must attend both days. Maximum of 3 participants. CNC MILLING 101 Wednesdays in September 6:00–8:00 pm

Learn how to use the CNC milling machine by making an engraved custom dog tag or luggage tag. Maximum of 6 participants. ARDUINO: HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SKETCHES Thursdays in September 6:00–8:00 pm

Learn how to write a sketch from scratch for the Arduino microcontroller. Maximum of 6 participants. 3D PRINTING 101 Saturdays in September, 12:30–2:30 pm

Learn how to make a ghostly marionette that will have eyes that light up and can be reprogrammed using a microcontroller. Maximum of 3 participants. INTERMEDIATE 3D PRINTING: CREATURE MASH UP Tuesdays in October, 6:00–8:00 pm

We’ll take two files from Thingiverse and mash them together to make a new creature. Participants should have taken 3D Printing 101 and/or have experience with TinkerCAD or other CAD software. Maximum of 6 participants. STOP MOTION ANIMATION Wednesdays & Thursdays in October 6:00–8:00 pm

Learn about stop motion by working with others to script, build, and animate a scene. This is a two-day class and you must attend both days. Maximum of 6 participants. ZOMBIE MAKE UP Saturdays in October, 3:00–5:00 pm
