Lincoln in the Library Presented by The Friends of the Lincoln Collection of Indiana

September 10, 2015 | The Allen County Public Library Dedication of the Statue “Moody, Tearful Night” by Richard Masloski 11:00 am | Entrance to Genealogy Department, Second Floor This work of art depicts the historical narrative as the mortally wounded President Abraham Lincoln was carried from Ford’s Theatre to a house across the street, where he would die at 7:22 a.m. on April 15, 1865. The statue was purchased by Ian and Mimi Rolland and donated to the Allen County Public Library.

The 2015 R. Gerald McMurtry Annual Lecture 7:00 pm | Library Theater, Lower Level 2 The Annual McMurtry Lecture featuring Harold Holzer, Chairman of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation and Director of the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College. His topic will be “1863 vs. 1865: What a Difference Two Years Made.” A reception will follow the lecture.

Author Visit: Wanda Brunstetter Amish / Christian Fiction author Wanda Brunstetter will be returning to Grabill Branch Library! She’ll be promoting her new book, The Lopsided Christmas Cake, which is set in the Topeka and LaGrange area. Wanda will do a 40-minute talk followed by an audience Q&A. “I’m a Hoosier!” The ACPL 33rd Annual Poetry Contest This is the 33rd annual Poetry Contest at the library. School-age children and young adults are invited to submit one original poem. This year, in honor of our state’s bicentennial, our theme is “I’m a Hoosier!” All entries must be received by 9:00 pm on Monday, November 2. Complete rules are available at your local library. The Award Ceremony will take place on Saturday, December 12.

October is Family History Month! Join us for a full month of family history activities this October! With at least one activity each day, The Genealogy Center is planning a month filled with events for all, from beginning family historians to experienced researchers. You don’t want to miss this October’s activities, with events such as “An Evening of Storytelling” to classes on using The Center’s subscription databases, with side trips into DNA exploration, technology and writing a family history. Highlights of the month include One-on-One Consultations, Midnight Madness Extended Research Hours on Friday, October 30, and a daylong workshop featuring Maureen Taylor, the Photo Detective, on Saturday, October 24. Middle-school age participants will work with a local artist designing their own comic or graphic novel character and learn about character anatomy plus how to draw parts of the body with emphasis on facial features. During this program, we’ll be creating process art, which focuses on the process of making artwork instead of the product of the finished artwork. Toddlers will have lots of fun stamping, crinkling, and smearing their art supplies to create a masterpiece that’s sure to have a place of honor on the refrigerator! While we will try to be as clean as possible, art projects have the potential to be messy, so it’s recommended that adults and little ones wear old clothes! Learn to make a coffee cozy sleeve for hot drinks. Maximum of 2 participants.

We’ll use conductive thread to make and light up a mask. Maximum of 2 participants.
