Clean up at Flycatcher Trail By Evonn Annor The Jenks Flycatcher Trail is a fantastic place to volunteer. You benefit from meeting new people--like you can in all-volunteer opportunities, but here you have the added benefit of learn how to garden. I started volunteering at the Flycatcher Trail when I first moved to Jenks sophomore year, and since then, I have volunteered almost every time there was an event. I have done everything from pruning branches to uprooting stubborn weeds and even getting the chance to plant beautiful roses, sunflowers, and trees. The Flycatcher Trail has also been a place of discovery, a location that incites curiosity and wonder within an individual. It was there that I had the chance to tag a Monarch Butterfly. I also learned how to distinguish between male and female monarch butterflies--it’s all in the wings. With this in mind, the Flycatcher Trail is not only seen as a place to volunteer, but it is also seen as a place to connect with nature and learn more about vegetation. I used this as an opportunity to introduce my siblings to volunteer activities and to nature itself. In introducing my siblings to this volunteer opportunity, I also introduced them to Key Club. I ultimately helped my sister find out what she wanted to do most in Key Club and work with plants and animals. I always wanted to try my hand at gardening, but I never had the resources or opportunity to do so until now. It was a wonderful experience, and it’s something I believe I will turn into a hobby and ultimately continue throughout my life and, hopefully, in college.
