hen weighing up the pros and cons of each island in the BVI and the lifestyle they afford, buyers must evaluate their priorities. Life on Virgin Gorda is well suited to those seeking quiet, luxurious anonymity. Tortola is for the sailors and social butterflies and Great Camanoe is for those seeking a relaxed refuge with serenity and seclusion. We tour three luxury villa properties for sale in three very different locations, all presented by BVI Sotheby’s International Realty. Which one would be the right fit for you?

Villa Somoya - Virgin Gorda Located at one of the highest points in the Valley, the three-bedroom Villa Somoya features breathtaking views that encompass the ocean and surrounding islands including the iconic Virgin Gorda boulders. From the property’s elevated setting, you can see up to 19 of the U.S. and British Virgin Islands across the Sir Francis Drake channel in a captivating panorama of cerulean water and rock formations. The 4,500-square-foot villa was designed by the owner with the help of his architect, James O’Halloran

in 2014. Renovated in 2019, it has a stylish Spanish feel with whitewashed walls, porticos and rich terracotta roof tiles. The bathrooms feature vibrant patterned floor tiles, circular showers and intricately inlaid cabinetry. Architectural characteristics, including turrets, columns and archways add interesting focal points around the property. The sophisticated use of exotic hardwoods and the installation of high-end fixtures and appliances give this property a luxurious feel. The villa’s tasteful furnishings perfectly blend classic design with Caribbean accents and bold pops of colour. On entering the villa, you can’t help but notice the light and airy double-height ceiling and the dramatic staircase leading up from the living area to the first of the kingbedroom suites - before the generous 2000-square foot pool deck and the views beyond capture your attention. The property has a superbly equipped inside/outside kitchen featuring petrified stone wood countertops and a power-screened breakfast bar that opens onto a covered terrace where you find the villa’s outdoor kitchen THIS SPREAD Villa Somoya on Virgin Gorda.

with a built-in Napoleon gas grill and stainless mini-fridge. Finishing this outdoor space perfectly, the 12-person dining table makes it effortless for guests to enjoy alfresco dining. A further double queen bedroom is downstairs and a second kingbedroom - the primary suite is separate from the main house and enjoys a private deck and a large secluded outdoor shower area. Thoughtfully designed to blend with Virgin Gorda’s natural setting, Villa Somoya is nestled amongst the giant granite boulders the island is famous for. The property’s many indigenous trees and the natural rocks have been carefully preserved and further highlighted with aromatic landscaped gardens and elegant accent lighting, complementing the panoramic sunsets and vistas. Centrally located in a private residential area, Villa Somoya is just a five-minute drive from popular restaurants and some of the island’s best beaches, including Spring Bay and The Baths. BVI Sotheby’s International Realty presents Villa Somoya for sale at $3,375,000.

Why Virgin Gorda? Living on Virgin Gorda affords buyers unparalleled access to the North Sound, known for its private islands and luxurious five-star resorts. The North Sound is also a haven for water sports enthusiasts with optimal conditions for sailing, kiteboarding and e-foiling. Virgin Gorda is a nature lover’s dream, with many unique landscapes and pristine beaches. Residents enjoy the hospitable community feel on island and benefit from an easy commute to Tortola, as well as public ferry access to Anegada and Jost van Dyke. There is a plethora of supermarkets, coffee shops and bakeries conveniently located in Spanish Town. THIS PAGE The villa’s thoughtfully designed interiors.

SummerSalt - Tortola Tucked away at the end of a private country lane, on approximately an acre of land, SummerSalt villa sits in Belmont Estate and overlooks the whole of Smuggler’s Cove with its own walking trail to the beach. Belmont Estate is one of the most popular areas on Tortola for vacation rental properties and long-term residents alike due to the proximity to blissful beaches, the convenience of West End’s ferry dock and the restaurants and shops at Soper’s Hole. It is approximately a 30-minute drive

to Road Town, so while it is quiet, it’s not too remote. SummerSalt is a very structurally sound home, suffering almost no damage from the 2017 hurricanes. Recently renovated with new appliances, packed with modern convenience and Caribbean charm. It comprises two villas, one on each side of the sunny swimming pool terrace, providing occupants with space and privacy. The main house has a large great room with an impressive, vaulted ceiling; the interior is fresh with bright blue accents, bringing

in the blues of the sea views below. It evokes classic West-Indian vibes throughout, including inside with its choice of materials and décor and outside thanks to its rich tropical landscaping. French doors lead onto the covered dining patio and the pool terrace with its distinctive hexagonal pool and native plants. The customdesigned gourmet kitchen is the focus of the great room and boasts a 12-footlong mahogany bar and a generous pantry. THIS PAGE SummerSalt villa on Tortola.

In the primary suite, wide French doors open onto the private veranda and the ensuite bathroom has an outdoor natural stone shower from which you can enjoy views of the beach below. The living areas are all on the ground floor, with two bedrooms and a shared bathroom on the main house’s lower level. The property is air-conditioned throughout. The separate guest cottage is selfcontained, complete with its own living area, kitchen, an intimate covered terrace and a very private king-bedroom suite. Both pavilions are ideally situated to catch the soft Caribbean breezes and glorious island sunsets. There is generous parking for at least two vehicles. Yet, one-half of the land remains undeveloped, leaving potential for the construction of a second guest cottage, a larger swimming pool or even an outdoor kitchen. BVI Sotheby’s International Realty presents SummerSalt for sale at $1,950,000.

Why Tortola? Public ferries and boat trips to the outer islands, including Norman Island and Cooper Island, are all just minutes from town and there are a host of dive and day-sail companies just waiting to take you out and explore further afield. Tortola arguably also offers the BVI’s best surf spots, Carrot Bay and Josiah’s Bay - if you’re someone looking for barrels and breaks. Suppose you like beaches with plenty of amenities, including beach bars, restaurants, restrooms or a buzzy social vibe; Tortola is the island for you. Tortola offers a more modern and convenient experience, with shopping, a greater selection of dining establishments and easy access to the banks and hospital. It also makes for a great base to explore the rest of the Virgin Islands, including ferries to St. Thomas and St. John. THIS SPREAD SummerSalt villa’s upscale Caribbean charm.

irgin Gorda’s North Sound is synonymous with luxe living, private islands and a selection of resorts that each provide their own unique and wonderful experience. Venture a little further to Deep Bay where you will find Oil Nut Bay Marina Village - a full-service resort that is purpose built to be both luxurious and attainable for residents and visitors… with a selection of enticing real estate investment opportunities added in, just for good measure. Every time we visit Oil Nut Bay Marina Village it’s exciting - just like going on a mini-vacation. As we draw near in our RHIB, the chic and sophisticated resort property comes into view, flanked by Oil Nut Bay’s Ocean and Marina villa neighbourhoods on each side. We dock just below Nova Restaurant and barely have time to tie up the boat before the kids are hopping in the (very inviting) infinity pool! Settling in on the sun loungers overlooking the pool and coral reef beyond with a cocktail we check out Nova’s lunch menu that proves to

be a challenge to choose from - there is something for all tastes including simple bites, raw food, salads, seafood, a fantastic selection of sushi, shared plates, burgers, a smashing kids menu and desserts to die for. As we discuss the menu choices, Christian from BVI e-foils is running a lesson for two guests in Deep Bay. It’s a lot of fun watching the couple glide around on their matching red Lift e-foils. In just two hours Christian has them standing up and powering around at speeds up to 20mph. As they return to the Deep Bay Watersports base, they are grinning from ear-toear and I overhear one mention “I’m hooked!”. I had a quick chat with Christian after the lesson and he tells me that he can also rendezvous with charter boat guests to provide e-foil lessons off the back of their boat and rents Lift e-foil boards at a daily rate. Recently the Company also introduced SEABOBS to their repertoire of adventure watersports options (that also includes wing foiling, kayaks and SUP boards). We sit down for lunch and while the kids power through their spaghetti bolognese, we share the sushi boat accompanied by a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc - as it is brought to the table, the sushi is not just beautifully presented, but also fresh and delicious. After lunch, the kids head off on a kayaking adventure around the mangroves with their Dad and I grab a flat white from the coffee shop that also doubles as a provisioning store for villa and charter guests, then head next door to Luna Boutique. The Manager, Lucy is warm and friendly and the store is a plethora of must-have items for the ladies that soon become a ‘need’! Having walked in without anything specific in mind, I settle on a sweet reversible Agua Bendita floral-one piece swimsuit and a pair of platinum OluKai roman-style sandals. The range is extensive and I could get lost in Luna Boutique all afternoon! I venture across the courtyard to the Deep Bay Watersports store. Apart from adventure watersports equipment and lessons, they have everything the guys will need for their vacation on the water, or day at the resort - Oil Nut Bay branded clothing, top brands such as Hurley, plus dressy shirts, footwear and accessories. As the boys are still enjoying their kayak tour in the Bay, one of Oil Nut Bay’s real estate specialists arrives to take me on a guided tour of Oil Nut Bay’s newest Ocean Villa neighbourhood, situated just a short golf cart ride away. In total, there are eight homesites situated on the water’s edge close to Bonefish Beach, a little white-sand beach ideal for families and quiet afternoons spent reading on a sun lounger. THIS SPREAD So much to do! Let the children have fun in the pool while you shop, grab a barista-style coffee, a cocktail on the terrace and a delicious lunch at Nova Restaurant.

Two of the homesites have already been sold. Of the remaining six - two are turnkey, three and four-bedroom Ocean Villas available for purchase and three are bare lots, upon which the buyer can build their own custom-built dream home. We arrive at Ocean Villa Two positioned on a homesite that boasts 120-feet of ocean frontage. This stunning, contemporary threebedroom home is designed to complement the natural beauty of its surroundings. Every room and living space makes the most of endless ocean views framed by floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors that open fully onto a generous over-water balcony and infinity pool. The villa comes fully designer furnished, ready to move-in. Oil Nut Bay welcome inquiries for Ocean Villa Two at $7,950,000. PURE CLASS on the water By Erin Paviour-Smith Photography by Jennifer Balcombe

K

ewl Water Charters are in a class of their own; beginning with a fleet of immaculate Cigarette Racing boats, this family-owned and operated business is setting a new standard for boutique, luxury power boat charters in the Virgin Islands. Recently, co-owner Pascha George invited the team from VIPY out for a day on the water so we could experience first-hand what they do each and every day for their guests. THIS SPREAD Experience a luxe day charter with Kewl Water Charters.

“We take care of our clients as though they are family” she says. And as I experienced for myself, Kewl Water’s guests are spoilt rotten. Our story begins a month prior to our charter. Pascha reaches out to discuss what our dream day out on the water would look like, then swiftly responds with a draft itinerary and a selection of menu and drink choices. From the get-go, there is no request that is too difficult and the service is completely bespoke. After a couple of minor edits, we confirm the plans, which of course include champagne!

They also offer full concierge service, private water taxis, day charters, event transportation, right through to villa and estate security services for VIPs and even dignitaries. ADVENTURE, like Leo

From the tender age of three, a passion for adventure and the outdoors has coursed through the veins of Leo Forte. Now he has harnessed that joie de vivre for his home country and is ready to show it off to the world. By Erin Paviour-Smith Photography by Jennifer Balcombe, ISO Studios & Leo Forte

L

eo grew up on Tortola with equal doses of freedom and motivation to succeed - encouraged to play and explore the raw, untouched wilderness that is the Virgin Islands. Fast forward to 2024, and this gentle young man has launched Bonita, a luxury concierge service, recreating

experiences that he lived out in his childhood for visitors and residents. “As children my brother Jasper, sister Nina and I played in and around the water every chance we had. We surfed, went free diving and sailing, played football and squash, hiked and beach combed. We were lucky to spend our childhood in an endless natural playground and were given the freedom to make the most of it” he says. The adventurous side of Leo may in part be inherited from his Mum, Jeanette who was raised in Kenya surrounded by a vast wilderness, an environment in which she flourished. Leo’s Dad, Mark, a lawyer and restauranteur provided a watchful eye and a disciplined approach to education. An ideal combination that prepared Leo for his future in business (and having fun!). THIS SPREAD Leo Forte has grown up in the playground that is the BVI - Now he is drawing on that wealth of knowledge to create bespoke experiences for his guests.

Leo attended Cedar International School that educates students under the world class International Baccalaureate® (IB) programme. After finishing high school, he took a gap year to backpack around the world before heading to the University of Manchester, graduating with a firstclass degree in Business with joint Spanish honours. Then it was on to Madrid to work for Payflow, a start-up fintech company that allows employees to instantly access earned wages through a mobile application. The experience was pivotal in Leo’s career. “Many children who are born and raised here leave to complete their tertiary education, get exposure to the big, wide world and therefore, sadly never return” says Leo. “I saw an opportunity to create my business based on a depth of knowledge of my home that I love so much and grew from all the adventures of my childhood”. There are too many special Virgin Islands memories to name, Leo says, but surfing at a deserted beach with his closest friends as the sun sets and the water turns to fiery red, island hopping as teenagers on Hobie Cats and setting up camp on an uninhabited island, are a couple of stand-outs. Leo loves being creative and taking his guests requests and super-charging them. Recently Leo was working with a couple on their itinerary and they requested a massage in a location “that was not just on the balcony of their villa”. So during their stay they were whisked off to the uninhabited island of Sandy Cay near Jost van Dyke, where a masseuse and his massage table awaited. “They were so happy!” said Leo, “this is exactly why I love my job, because I have the opportunity to curate something very unique for each guest”.

The world is filled with adventure - all you have to do is find it! Guests are not all necessarily visitors. Bonita caters to residents who, for example may have family or friends coming to visit, corporate business trips and special events. Bonita has a small network of preferred partners who also bring the authenticity of the Virgin Islands to life, such as Hike BVI’s Sef Graham who started out hiking as a way to pass the time and stretch his legs during the pandemic - this has now become a thriving business. Sef knows

an endless amount about the flora and fauna of the islands, including its natural remedies. Another favourite of Leo’s is the farm-to-table experience at Tortola’s Good Moon Farm where guests tour the farm, pick their own fresh ingredients and learn about organic OPPOSITE Bonita curates guest experiences so they get to see the real BVI, as if they are a local, with all the luxurious details covered. n Sunday 5 November 2023, food and wine enthusiasts came from far and wide for Rose All Day, presented in association with Brandywine Estate Restaurant, French Deli, Grape Expectations, Party World BVI and VIPY magazine. Hosted by Brandywine’s Claudine Bourdon and VIPY’s Erin PaviourSmith, the event kicked-off at lunchtime. As they arrived, partygoers were greeted with a glass of pink bubbles and wandered through a restaurant transformed into a floral pink wonderland. All in their pink finery, guests tasted dishes by Chef Regis Bourdon including fresh salmon, prawns and beef tenderloin by Grape

Expectations, accompanied by rosé wines courtesy of Sebastien and Remi Craquelin from the French Deli and partners, Château Peyrassol Rosé. The atmosphere was electric, with much frivolity and a packed 3D photo booth! As the afternoon wore on, guests hit the dance floor ‘til late with DJ Dre (and Claudine!) on the decks….. and the rest, as they say, is history! eborah is the eighth child of the late Geneva Harrigan-Reynolds, lovingly known throughout the community as Ms G and Carlton Reynolds, who died when Deborah was just over two years old. “Mum cooked, cleaned and worked multiple jobs to provide for us, so my siblings helped to raise me” says Deborah. The family lived in a twobedroom home in Huntum’s Ghut, near Road Town. The children’s clothes were of course handed down and by the time they reached little Deb (as she was known) she would protest “These are not my style, Mum!”. As early as she can remember, the youngster would kick-up her collar and roll up her sleeves to reinvent her look.

Older sister, Honourable Lorna Smith, OBE was the boss when it came to fashion in the early years. But the two had very different styles. “I wanted to wear my hair out, but Lorna said I should pull it back to look more refined” says Deborah with a smile. “But she said I had a good eye for fashion” and eventually the sisters switched roles. “When Lorna became Permanent Secretary to late Premier Honourable H. Lavity Stoutt, I would buy all her clothes and style her” says Deborah, at the time studying at Howard University in Washington D.C. Deborah met Everett O’Neal and the couple welcomed two daughters Safrika and Zharia O’Neal. Every semester break while studying, Deborah traveled back and forth between the US and BVI, and each

time she returned with suitcases filled with clothes for family and friends. “Everyone would gather at the family home to pick up their pieces” she remembers fondly. “I always had a deep love for fashion and I wanted something different to what was available here at the time” she continues. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Based Information Systems, she returned home and launched the BVI’s first computer school - Computer Services International. But anytime she traveled, she would pick up pieces and keep them on racks in a dedicated room at the computer school known as ‘the back room’. Soon it became clear ‘the back room’ had to be more.
