A WARM WELCOME I’m loving…
In this issue, we are full of the joys of Spring, which means it’s a good time to embrace those quintessential BVI activities that make the season so special - sailing being an important one. The BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival is scheduled for 1-7 April. Sailors from at home and abroad gather for an exciting schedule of racing and fun. While on the subject, our On the Water section is packed full of great stories from yacht ownership on page 50 to the exhilaration of foiling around the North Sound on page 52. We begin the Lifestyle section with good advice on how to commission your very own jewellery design on page 56. I love it when our pages feature local fashion and on page 60 we glam it up resort-style. For foodies - we do not disappoint. Turn to page 71 for our regular Dining Guide and page 76 for Local Cuisine with a Twist recipe feature.
Wishing you many selfie-worthy moments this Spring.

BVI ARCHITECT FEATURED IN “100 WOMEN: ARCHITECTS IN PRACTICE”

Liburd, is featured in The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Publishing book, 100 WOMEN: Architects in Practice.
“I am honoured to be one of a hundred female architects from around the world to be included in this groundbreaking book. There are many exceptional and talented architects featured and it is humbling to join them” said Lavina, Principal of TigerQi Architecture, a firm that operates in both the BVI and her native Saint Kitts and Nevis.
The book features three of Lavina’s projects:
- Bayhouse Villa, Crook Bay, Virgin Gorda.
- The Remodel of Brandywine Estate Restaurant, Tortola.
- The Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre, Tortola (currently under construction).
Over the past decade, awareness of the need for gender balance in architecture has gained traction. In the RIBA’s newest book, women’s contribution to the built environment is acknowledged and celebrated.
100 WOMEN: Architects in Practice is a rich, diverse and fascinating survey of exceptional female architects and the book shines a spotlight on leading practitioners from all across the globe.
The authors noted that “each has the knowledge and talent to be a household name. It is hoped that the book plays a part in increasing their visibility by giving their contributions due recognition”.

Vincent “Bing” Malone
Bing was born and raised and still lives in Fat Hog’s Bay, Tortola. Bing says his mum nicknamed him “Bien” when he was a child because he was ‘good’ and never cried. Throughout his childhood, he drew “anything that anyone would mention.” He drew on the blackboard and made his classmates laugh. During his 20s, he built Bing’s Drop Inn, a restaurant that now doubles as his art studio, after which he moved to St. Thomas, “to explore”, he says. He then moved on to New York where he received his first and only formal training in art doing silk screening. Bing says he developed the skill of painting by “just wanting to be an artist”.
After moving back to Tortola in the 90s, he sold his first painting. Because he had no money, he had to use his wooden cutting board to make a canvas.
The quaint painting can still be found at Bing’s Drop Inn today; he traded that first painting with the owner for a new one.Bing credits his cousin Russell Lettsome and uncle Davin Frett, both artists, for inspiring and encouraging his art.
Bing recalls his uncle saying before he died: “Bing, you’re getting better than me.” He also is grateful for his wife, Xiomara Grossett, who is also an artist and fashion designer.

What does art mean to Bing?
“Art is a way of knowing that all things are possible.”
Bing says he has always been fascinated with colours and is motivated to see what the final product will be. “I love colours...if it’s a dark day, you can have a bright beautiful day by having beautiful colours around you.”
His favourite thing to paint is clouds because they change constantly. “It’s for the now. You see everything in the clouds. You see all sorts of things in the cloud that you’re like ‘wow’, but it lasts for a second...brings you more to the spiritual side of life.”
While Bing’s preferred medium is paint, he also makes bags and jewellery from calabash and also designs and sews clothes.
Bing says his highest point as an artist happens every time he paints, when he “connects with the spiritual side of the Universe”.

This year, architectural firm OBMI celebrates 58-years in the BVI. Managing Director Marvin Flax - a BVI native tells Erin Paviour-Smith about the firm’s proud heritage in the Territory, the region and around the globe.
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY OBMI.
ON LAND / ARCHITECTURE 22 VIRGIN ISLANDS PROPERTY, YACHTS & LIFE
The OBMI story begins over eight decades ago in Bermuda. Wilfred Onions and fellow architect Val Bouchard designed the influential Bermuda style homes, now a characteristic of the island.
The firm evolved into the commercial sector and was joined by John McCulloch, who expanded the firm’s footprint in the Caribbean. In the 1960s, interior design, landscape architecture and master planning were added to the firm’s suite of services. This was the beginning of OBMI.
Today, the architecture, master planning and interior design firm with particular strengths in sustainability and wellness, operates in 10 locations around the globe and employs over 100 experts and specialists in the field, imagining, designing and planning private residences, resort communities, branded residential, mixed-use commercial and ultra-luxury hospitality developments.
“We intend to create visionary spaces that tell a story that is synonymous with the location. We carefully discover the innate essence of a destination and translate it into something unique and extraordinary” says Tim Peck, OBMI Chairman.
Since 1966, OBMI’s expertise has been helping to shape the BVI community. “OBMI has contributed greatly to the islands’ built environment, from commercial, to hotel and hospitality, private residences and interior spaces,” says Marvin Flax, Managing Director and International Associate in the BVI.
Over the years, architectural styles have evolved in the BVI, but one can always identify a home designed by OBMI through its distinct features and aesthetic. The proportions of the home, a combination of symmetry/asymmetry, materials, the pitch of the roof and how the home sat within the confines of the property were all indicators that it was an OBMI home.

The unique and timeless design elements were unmistakable” he says.
Raised on Tortola - as a youngster Marvin visited construction sites with his grandfather who was in the industry and worked with many architects of the time.
Incredibly, OBMI has been a part of Marvin’s life since he was just 14 years old. He learned technical drawing from some of the original OBMI architects. This helped to fuel his passion for the industry which was clearly in him from a young age.
“Marvin would come to the office after school and practice his drafting and it was then that he became part of the OBMI family. When he left the BVI to study architecture and work in the US, I was always chasing him to come back and join our BVI team.
My ambition was to one day see him in charge of the BVI office, and in 2016 that dream became a reality” says Tim Peck.
The BVI team, under Marvin’s watchful eye, have worked on many notable commercial and private residential projects.
A significant design influence on the Oil Nut Bay resort development, as well as luxury hospitality and villa projects including Villa Katsura, Baraka Point and Rosewood Little Dix Bay Resort, all on Virgin Gorda, the spectacular Nora Hazel Point residences on Tortola and within the wider region, the Nevaeh residences on Anguilla, to name just a select few.
“In terms of exciting projects that will soon be completed, the team is proud to continue our longstanding relationship with Peter Island Resort, unveiling a new design at the end of this year,” says Marvin.

After almost 30-years, Marvin is a thought leader and trusted advisor in the BVI architectural and construction industries and leads a highly skilled and experienced team of architects and interior designers that understand the unique nature of our communities and precious environment, which he is passionate about preserving.
“Our design stories are for the present and future, created with a keen sense of responsibility. In everything we do, we intend to support our clients in leading sustainable practices for the ultimate wellbeing of the places and communities where our designs are found” says Marvin.

“We have a range of villas that cater to every need” says Sharon. “We love taking care of our guests, focusing on attention to detail; from booking to arrival and departure. We create personalised, bespoke vacations for families, small groups, romantic escapes, special occasions and anything in between”, she continues. For villa owners, the team has over 20 years’ experience in villa management on Virgin Gorda with a reputation for excellence.
Sharon says that what she loves best about Virgin Gorda is the warmth and friendliness of the people, who are committed to ensuring that guests have a memorable vacation.
But when it comes to the island’s natural beauty, she finds it hard to choose just one spot. She does
particularly love the 30-minute scenic drive starting at the iconic Baths National Park and the stunning vista heading towards the North Sound. This road loops through Nail Bay on the west mountain road, revealing Mahoe Bay, before heading back to Spanish Town.

TOWN OF THE TALK
TANVEER BADAL AND OIL NUT BAY.
For buyers looking to invest in luxury, waterfront real estate with all the trimmings, Oil Nut Bay’s Ocean View and Deep Bay Neighbourhoods are a must-see. Erin Paviour-Smith finds out why.

ON LAND / REAL ESTATE 28 VIRGIN ISLANDS PROPERTY, YACHTS & LIFE
On the Eastern tip of Virgin Gorda, beyond the renowned North Sound - with its small group of private islands and resorts, sits Oil Nut Bay - a luxury residential resort community; and one of the greatest achievements of its visionary creator, David V. Johnson’s lifetime.
The topography of the 400-acre property is breathtaking - the north side has a coral reef teeming with sea life and aquamarine water all the way to sister island, Anegada and on the south side, steep and majestic cliffs rise out of the wild expanse of open ocean.
Within this varied landscape, Oil Nut Bay’s developer has created fifteen neighbourhoods all with their unique visual aspects and features to appeal to individual lifestyles and preferences.
VIRGIN ISLANDS PROPERTY, YACHTS & LIFE 29
Two of these are located on the Marina Village side of the Resort - a full-service, state-of-the-art marina that includes 101 berths, accommodating yachts up to 130-feet (40 meters) close by. Here you will also find Nova, an over-water restaurant and bar with a suspended infinity pool, a coffee shop, a market, ladies’ and menswear boutiques and private watersports lessons and rentals at Deep Bay Watersports.
Ocean Neighbourhood
Offering unobstructed ocean views towards Necker and Eustatia islands in the distance, the Ocean Neighbourhood is made up of a total of nine homesites and is a short walk from the Marina Village.
Ocean Villa Two is positioned at the water’s edge with zero setback and boasts 120-feet of ocean frontage. The stunning 2,440-square-foot, contemporary threebedroom home is designed perfectly to complement the natural beauty of its surroundings.
Every room and living space makes the most of endless ocean views framed by floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors that open fully onto a generous over-water balcony and infinity pool.

The villa comes fully designer furnished and is ready to move in. Oil Nut Bay welcomes inquiries for Ocean Villa Two at $7,950,000.
Deep Bay Neighbourhood
Also, a short walk from the Marina Village, Deep Bay Neighbourhood is made up of a total of six homesites.
Perched atop an elevated site is Deep Bay Villa One, a 3,105-square-foot, four-bedroom developer-built
home. Scheduled for completion in April 2024, this contemporary, island-chic home features 180-degree views of the Caribbean Sea and neighbouring islands.
On the villa’s upper level, a penthouse-style principal suite, a high-end designer kitchen and an infinity pool, while the lower level features kingsized guest suites. Oil Nut Bay welcomes inquiries for Deep Bay One at $7,550,000.

TOP 10 TIPS ON REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT IN THE BVI
Industry expert Scarlett Steer outlines her best advice for prospective real estate buyers
While not impervious to worldwide surges and slumps, BVI real estate has proven to be a creature of surprising resilience. Underwritten by a flourishing financial services industry and thriving tourism trade, the territory remains a global offshore epicentre and magnet to the mega-wealthy.
Add to that extraordinary natural beauty, year-round sunshine, temperate seas and the ensuing excellent quality of life, the BVI is hard to beat. When it comes to investment, no list of considerations is ever going to be exhaustive, but the following few basics are a solid place to start.
ON LAND / REAL ESTATE
1
. A Genuine Guide
The realtor you choose will set the tone for your entire experience. Do your research and take your time. Finding your forever home is a journey. Choose a knowledgeable and candid companion with whom to relish the ride.
2. A Trusted Advisor
The BVI benefits from a well-established legal system based on English common law. While this offers a familiar framework for investors, the approval process for expatriate ownership can seem formidable. Reporting to the relevant BVI government bodies needs to be done in just the right way. It is crucial to have skilled, local legal representation to effectively navigate the process.
3. Location, location, location
No two British Virgin Islands or neighbourhoods are the same. Learn the communities, understand their immediate surroundings, ask about existing homeowner associations (some are more exacting than others) and ask questions about covenants and conventions. Setting your intentions and being clear on your priorities is essential to finding what and where fits.
4. To Build or Not to Build?
That is the question. Starting from scratch on foreign soil can be downright terrifying, but it isn’t as intimidating as it seems. The BVI is home to a plethora of skilled construction professionals who can comfortably make your dream a reality. If you’re looking at land, pay careful attention to topography and existing utilities. The lay of the land and any existing infrastructure will have a substantial impact on your per-square-foot build price.
5. Public vs Private
The BVI benefits from 10 months of favourable weather which also means a 10-month rental season – good news for buyers seeking a return on their investment. If you are looking for a strong rental home with wide-range appeal, then access is especially important. Ask about rental history and numbers – the market has recovered sufficiently post-Irma and pandemic for there to be some real statistics to share. Don’t let any realtor tell you otherwise.
6. Turnkey vs some TLC
If you are looking at investing in a completed home, then it’s worth keeping in mind that most houses in the BVI are much loved, owner-built with a few years (possibly decades) under their belts.
VIRGIN ISLANDS PROPERTY, YACHTS & LIFE 35
Very few are truly turnkey. A handful of luxury resorts offer developer-built speculative homes, but these are in the minority.
7. Access is King
Consider access - to the house itself as well as to the various amenities and of course, to the water.
“Steps from the beach” sells and if you are in search of a money-maker, it doesn’t get more attractive to prospective guests than that. In terms of the actual home, ask about the access road and who is responsible for its upkeep. BVI roads can leave something to be desired and unless you’re in search of a sanctuary well off the beaten path, a hair-raising hill or potholed track can be a serious deterrent to visitors.
8. Existing Infrastructure
Existing underground utilities are a first-prize win. They add considerably to a property’s aesthetic appeal and allow for uninterrupted views. They are also protected from inclement weather. The BVI neighbourhoods with belowground efficacies were the first to bounce back in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma purely because of the minimal damage they sustained.
9. Maintenance & Management
We

Buying property is not a simple, standalone investment. Once the dream is acquired it needs to be appropriately cared for. Insurance, property management, preventative and routine maintenance and safeguarding against storms all involve ongoing costs that are seldom considered early in the home selection process. Falling in love is easy, but committing to what you can realistically conserve, not so much. Use both your heart and your head.
10. Incorporating the Elements

A GEOLOGICAL WONDER –
THE BATHS
NATIONAL PARK
BY JULIAN PUTLEY
ON LAND / BEACHES 42 VIRGIN ISLANDS PROPERTY, YACHTS & LIFE
There are few places on earth that are quite so magnificent, awe-inspiring and stunningly beautiful as The Baths National Park on Virgin Gorda’s south-west point.
Mystifying giant boulders are scattered over more than six acres, some up to 40 feet in diameter. The Baths is in a league of its own and should be on every ‘must-see’ list.
It is hard to imagine how such enormous boulders ended up on this mile-long stretch of sandy beach - some in the turquoise water, others piled high along the beach, one on top the other, balanced precariously, creating a unique spectacle and allowing for natural pools and grottoes underneath.
There is a geological answer to the spectacular formation of this unique natural wonder.
The origin of the boulders occurred about 50 million years ago when molten rock (magma) pushed its way upward, became exposed, cooled and solidified forming large slabs of mineral rich granite; a massive body of crystalline igneous rock known as a batholith, hence the name The Baths.
The temperature of the magma, possibly up to 2,000 degrees centigrade, caused the various minerals to greatly expand. When they cooled, the boulders split and cracked.
As rain falls through the atmosphere, carbon dioxide is dissolved and pure rainwater becomes a mild carbonic acid (rain). This exposure to the elements causes discolouration, aging and weathering. Over millennia all these forces combined to create the diverse natural wonders we see today.
The boulders display an assortment of different shapes and forms that stimulate the imagination. There’s the Grand Cavern, Neptune’s Hideaway, the Throne, the Turtle and the Anvil, to name just a few of the natural sculptures.
Perhaps the most impressive natural sculptures are those that have gone through a hollowing-out process. Most amazing is the huge formation known as Neptune’s Hideaway.
From the beach, crawl through the small opening between the rocks (there’s a sign) and emerge into the Grand Cavern, probably the most photographed spot in the BVI. A spectacular cave with a pool of water being continuously renewed as the waves wash in and out. At certain times of the day sunlight
44 VIRGIN ISLANDS PROPERTY, YACHTS & LIFE
shines through openings in the cavern’s ceiling reflecting off the water and producing dancing patterns on rock faces.
After a refreshing dip there, continue on the trail via the walkway with wooden ladders and rope handholds to the adjacent Neptune’s Hideaway.
As you continue along the trail you will eventually exit the grottoes. Here you will find an almost impossible balanced boulder looking like an anvil set in a pool of translucent turquoise. It looks as though it would topple at the touch of a finger – but it’s been there for 50 million years!
The trail opens onto a small beach, Devil’s Bay, where the snorkeling is stunning. Corals have
attached themselves to the boulders. Elkhorn and Staghorn are not uncommon and a myriad of fish take advantage of the many cracks and crevices, ledges and caves.
Access to the Baths by sea: Check weather forecasts in advance in case of large swells. Tie up to a red mooring ball. Dinghy close to the restricted area, jump into the water and swim or snorkel the short distance to the beach. There, a sign will guide you to the trail.
By land you will arrive at ‘The Top of the Baths.’ A sign will direct you to the trail.
Visitors take note - Proper footwear is needed as the boulders can be slippery. This is due to residual

mineral grains of primarily white quartz that are left behind after chemical decay caused by rain and other weathering factors. Much of the beach sand is composed of white grains of quartz and black grains of hornblende, two of the main components of granite.
Your visit to The Baths will undoubtedly be a highlight of your BVI visit. You just cannot fail to have a wonderful time.
Special thanks to Charles A Ratte, Geologist.

CAPTAIN MIKE MEET
Erin Paviour-Smith meets Captain Mike Hallett - Vietnam veteran, sailor, boat builder, marine engineer and HONDA Marine & Power, Landmaster and Highfield RIB’s representative in the BVI.
When I ask Mike how he became a boatbuilder, he simply answers “OJT… On the Job Training!” he laughs. “After finishing school, I went into the Army, did two tours in Vietnam, then went home to Chicago and enrolled at Southern Illinois University… had a wonderful time but didn’t learn a thing!”
So he got a job as a first-mate and dive instructor on a boat. Mike never looked back and the sailing industry became his life. Soon he was a freelance Captain sailing throughout the Caribbean.
Mike earned enough to invest in a welding business in Ft. Lauderdale that did work for large shipyards. He says he knew nothing about machinery, carpentry or welding, but learned on the job (of course!).

ran private charters around the Caribbean, settling in the BVI in 1989 where he chartered the boat. He met wife Sandie and they had two sons.
He sold La Buscadora in 2014, then launched Mike’s Marine, putting over 50-years of OJT in the sailing and marine engineering industries to good use. As I talk to Mike, I remember my late father’s words “Erin, he has forgotten more than you will ever know!”
I find that to be true as now Mike’s Marine is the BVI’s exclusive Honda Marine and Honda Power dealer, as well as Highfield RIB, and all-American made Landmaster gas and electric UTV’s.
Mike’s Marine is proud to have outfitted both new Virgin Islands Search and Rescue (VISAR) rescue boats with HONDA twin 250 horsepower engines for their reliability.
Just one of the benefits of purchasing from Mike (aside from decades of knowledge) is that the company provides sales, service, warranty and parts for all of the products at their warehouse in Road Town.
Mike’s Marine is not just a team of one - Son Jake, who studied Engineering in College assists customers with anything from moving their boats to maintenance and supporting Mike in the office.
“Some products on the market outside of the BVI may be cheaper, but the difficulties are level of quality and lack of after-sales service” says Mike.

Peter Jones from VOYAGE Charters talks to Erin Paviour-Smith about building awardwinning cruising catamarans.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMUEL CHILDS, ISLAND FILMS
For almost 30 years VOYAGE Yachts have built beautiful, international award-winning yachts well known for their strength and quality craftsmanship.
ON THE WATER / YACHTS
THIS SPREAD: The VOYAGE 590, winner of Cruising World magazine’s Boat of the Year Award for Best Charter Boat.
VOYAGE Charters is based in Sopers Hole Marina and incorporates the West End Boat Yard, owned and operated by the same family.
Shared ownership of the yacht manufacturer in South Africa has allowed VOYAGE Charters to grow a fleet of purpose-built and equipped charter yachts, all privately owned by people who enjoy sailing the BVI, as well as the fullservice management of VOYAGE Charters.
The company’s management programme combines the owner’s personal time on board with income-generating crewed and bareboat charters, providing revenue for all the yacht’s operating expenses and a return to the owners, who have the option for more or less time on board their yacht, determining the return available from chartering. For most owners, it’s a balance between a few weeks of vacation each season and a return equal to +/- 10% of their yacht’s purchase price.
The current production includes the stunning VOYAGE 590, winner of Cruising World magazine’s Boat of the Year Award for Best Charter Boat. This year VOYAGE Yachts adds the VOYAGE 510, featuring four identical ensuite, walk around queen berth cabins and two ensuite double berth crew/guest cabins.
While both the VOYAGE 590 and VOYAGE 510 maximise accommodation for optimal charter performance, each model also features alternate cabin configurations with larger master suites and spaces dedicated for laundry, workshops and additional storage.
Here is what two VOYAGE 590 yacht owners had to say:
“We have been traveling to the Caribbean for over 30 years and are the proud owners of our third catamaran with VOYAGE Yachts - the 590. We have experienced the best vacations of our lives with the expert service and care of the staff at VOYAGE Charters. The VOYAGE 590 is a great design and gives you the comfort and luxury of a five-star hotel with a beautiful sandy beach to enjoy whenever you choose. The VOYAGE team is awesome and will assist you with your trip of a lifetime!”

For my wife and I, owning a share in a VOYAGE 590 brought us back to a life that we experienced previously in the islands, working on yachts. Now, as a group of owners, we share a common business and are great friends, so we have an excuse to get together and enjoy a lifestyle that many only dream of. Purchasing the VOYAGE 590 has also provided a valuable a learning experience for our young children.

ON THE WATER / WATER SPORTS 52 VIRGIN ISLANDS PROPERTY, YACHTS & LIFE
Erin Paviour-Smith meets watersports junkie Christian Harris and quickly learns that thrill seekers need not only apply.
Virgin Gorda’s North Sound is a playground for watersports enthusiasts . Visitors and residents, including Sir Richard Branson are regularly seen playing on the water around the area with much aplomb.
The foiling craze so prevalent around the world has of course become the norm in the BVI and in particular the North Sound due to its protected waters and prevailing wind conditions.
Eager to find out what all the fuss is about I met with BVI e-foils manager and passionate oceanextraordinaire Christian Harris, who is based in the North Sound where he coaches anyone who is keen to hop on a foil and have a blast.
Talking to Christian is like a breath of fresh tropical air. He is open, friendly and has a way of instantly putting you at ease. We have a chat about his career on the water.
He tells me that he grew up on the coast of North Wales in the UK. By the age of 18 he was a qualified RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Sailing Instructor and Offshore Yacht Master with his 200-tonne Power Boat Captain’s license - and that is just for starters.
As he lists his wide-ranging experience in the industry from dive master and instructor, sailing and windsurfing instructor, yacht delivery Captain all around the Mediterranean and North Africa,
to assisting with the launch of the first e-foiling school in the UK and then running it - I’m thinking that if I were to try foiling, this is the guy to learn from.
“All of this eventually lead me here to the BVI” he says with a smile. A family connection, previous time in the BVI and the opportunity to launch and manage the first LIFT e-foil school in the BVI lured him back.
BVI e-foils operates from Deep Bay Watersports based at Oil Nut Bay Marina Village. They are the BVI’s LIFT e-foil dealer and offer not only e-foiling lessons, but sales and rentals, SEABOB sales, lessons and rentals and wing foiling lessons.
I ask Christian what guests can expect when they book a lesson with BVI e-foils.
“Our lessons are two hours and we can take one-onone lessons, right up to larger groups” he says.
THIS PAGE Christian in action!
OPPOSITE FROM TOP Duotone wing foiling gear is available from Deep Bay Watersports. Inquire about rendezvous e-foil lessons while on charter.
“We start off with an initial safety briefing and guidance on land where I give the guests a session on the skills and drills before moving onto the water. Once there, I guide the guests through the basic steps from lying down on the board and building confidence to eventually standing up”.
Guests can either take their lessons in and around Deep Bay and the North Sound area, or Christian and assistant coach Maye, can rendezvous to teach guests from their charter boat around the waters of the BVI.
In March, the Company expands to a second retail store location at Leverick Bay Resort & Marina where they will have DUOTONE wing foiling equipment, LIFT e-foils and SEABOBS available for purchase.
As we finish up our chat, I realise that even I’m sold on foiling with Christian.

CLOTH TALK
Deborah Reynolds’ arrival on the BVI fashion scene with the launch of UMI Fashions almost 30 years ago, ushered in an era of fun, attainable style, vibrancy and body positivity.
BY ERIN PAVIOUR-SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY BY STACY “BUDDHA” MATHER
As I step inside UMI on Road Town’s Waterfront Drive, I’m drawn to rails of beautiful garments - a sheer kaftan in the deepest of green, a soft white off-the shoulder gown trimmed with feathers and an aqua blue fringed cover-up. My eyes dart to the rear of the store, to a striking display of silk scarves, expertly layered.
Deborah arrives for our interview (note to self: must return to browsing racks later to select my gown for the upcoming Oil Nut Bay White Party).
She mentions that she has spent the morning styling her sister, Lorna, after waking at 5am to take a cross-fit class. All this before I have had my first morning coffee!
Deborah’s style is vibrant and confidently puts a stake in the ground - “I am woman, hear me roar!” - today she rocks a pair of white linen palazzo pants, a sheer, over-sized orange shirt, a peek of the brightest hue of yellow and a silk headscarf that pulls the whole look together effortlessly.
“Personally curating looks for individual clients and for the store gives me great joy and it is one of the things I love most about my job. I travel to see the collections in person and then hop on Facetime with the clients to show the pieces that I visualise them wearing” says Deborah. “I don’t do cut and paste!” she laughs.
Originally inspired by international fashion shows by well-known designers, Deborah put her own fashion shows together starring everyday people and these shows continue today, such as “UMI Live at 5”.
“UMI fashion is attainable for everybody. I wanted the people modeling the clothes to be the real people who wore them, in a realistic setting” she tells me. “Not only that, but the shows are a lot of fun and really bring the community together” she says.
As we finish up our talk, I’m already booking Deborah to dress me for that white party.

LOCAL CUISINE With a Twist
RECIPES BY KAYLEIGH DRIVER STYLING BY ERIN PAVIOUR-SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY BY RAINBOW VISIONS BVI
Shrimp Ceviche
Level Easy
Makes about 2 cups
While our local food is delicious, it can be quite heavy. This final recipe is light and refreshing, a dish great for lunch or dinner, and quite versatile. Ceviche, as many of you may know, is taking raw seafood and ‘cooking’ it using the acid from the citrus fruits. It’s delightful!
1 lb raw shrimp, shelled, deveined. Either diced or kept whole
1 red bell pepper, small dice Juice of 2 limes
1/2 jalapeno, fine dice
1/2 red onion, fine dice
1 avocado, diced
Fresh cilantro
Place first four ingredients into a nonreactive bowl and allow to sit in the fridge to marinade for about 1 – 2 hours. You don’t want to overdo this as the shrimp will get tough if they sit too long. When ready to serve, add the avocado and cilantro.
