Scott Meyers
Sailing is in Scott’s blood! He grew up in Michigan, where he learned to sail at the age of five. After earning a degree in mechanical engineering from Michigan State University, he quickly realised that working in a cubicle wasn’t for him.
So he (of course) sailed away in 2010 to live aboard a yacht and cruise the Bahamas and Caribbean. After Scott’s family grew, he took over Aristocat Daysails in 2015 and decided to stay in the BVI. Aside from sailing, Scott plays the fiddle, and loves the outdoors and anything active, including skiing, biking, surfing, hiking and camping.
He is Dad to three brave daughters and he loves taking them on adventures. Scott believes in continuously striving to improve while still being content and living in the present.

Carol Schohooven
In 2008, as a young girl, Carol and her family relocated from Colombia to the BVI. After a few years, some of her family returned home, but she loved it too much to leave. Now she is a violinist, teaches Spanish and music to children at three different schools, and owns a yoga practice called Pura Vida Yoga BVI, providing lessons to residents at her favourite restaurant, Captain Mulligan’s, as well as villa, charter, and resort guests throughout the islands.
Carol loves to surf at Josiah’s and Apple Bays and is often cheered on by her Mum, Maria. Surfing and yoga have been the best therapy for Carol, who lives with depression and therefore prioritises her mental health. “Spending a lot of time in nature plus practising yoga, meditation, therapy and being around supportive friends and family, including my partner, Kiril, and two beloved dogs Chiwi and Charlie, have all played a huge role in my recovery and wellness journey,” says Carol. @carolschoonhoven
Dr Robin Tattersall, OBE
In the 1950’s, Robin put himself through medical school in the UK by modeling for such brands as Chanel and Dior in the pages of Harper’s Bazaar with some of the fashion world’s most prominent photographers, including Richard Avedon and Norman Parkinson. His modeling days behind him, Robin arrived in the BVI with his young family in October 1965 to be the islands’ first general surgeon at Pebbles Hospital.
In addition to his surgical duties, he ran a busy general practice providing medical attention for everything from delivering babies to eye surgery. After leaving his government post as general surgeon, he founded Bougainvillea Clinic, a private hospital where he learned from one of the best in the business and became a renowned plastic surgeon.
Apart from his medical career, sailing has always been a huge part of Robin’s life, and he launched the BVI’s first charter yacht company Virgin Voyages in the early 1970’s. He has a passion for recreational and competitive sailing, and his achievements in the sport are far too many to list. He has represented the BVI in two Olympic Games and competes every year in the BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival. These days, at the golden age of 94, he is loving life with his family and beautiful wife, Crista. @robin_tattersall

Armando Jenik, Underwater Photographer
BY SARAH SHERMAN
Armando Jenik’s life is filled with passion for the sea –and he’s photographed the entire journey. Buenos Aires, Argentina, is not the obvious place for a life of incredible sea-faring stories to begin, but Armando Jenik has felt the call of the ocean since he was a child, and each adventure is more incredible than the last.
Early Days
Armando credits swimming with southern right whales in the San Matias Gulf in Patagonia for his lifelong love of adrenalin-filled ocean adventures.
“One day I was jogging on the beach. A mother, father and baby whale were very close to shore, so I jumped into the water. The mother surfaced and I reached out and held her tail,” Armando recalls. It was an incredible experience that made an indelible mark on his life.
It was difficult to make a living from the ocean, so as Armando got older, he kept returning to Patagonia to work as a diver searching for oyster beds. After this, his diving career took off. His Patagonian dive training continued in a quarry, where the visibility was almost zero. “We would reach out and feel around until we touched something, and then we had to figure out what it was,” says Armando.
“We collected a lot of brass nails and china, and found out they were remains from the Lord Clive shipwreck of 1763.”
First Camera
Armando found his way to Israel and served as an Israeli volunteer during the 1967 Six Day War. Soon after his active service was over, he walked into a local aquarium and met the director, who invited him to dinner and offered him a job collecting fish from the Red Sea for the University of Jerusalem zoology department. The aquarium director would compose ocean “scenes” in a tank, and Armando would capture them on film.
In 1968, Armando’s father came to Israel and and gave him his first underwater camera – a Calypso. It was the first 35mm underwater camera conceived by marine explorer Jacques Cousteau. The ocean not only provided a hobby, but endless adventures, and now career opportunities, too. After gaining his CMAS dive instructor certification in Italy, the warmer waters of the Caribbean called to him.
Virgin Islands Adventures
Armando moved to St. Thomas, USVI in 1970.
Soon after, he vividly recalls watching the documentary Blue Water, White Death by filmmakers Peter Gimbel and James Lipscomb, accompanied by Australian shark experts Ron and Valerie Taylor, about their expedition to film the elusive great white shark.
he continues. He asked the company to borrow the cage and after hearing what he wanted it for, they gave it to him. He added an old 55-gallon drum to the top for floatation - and “Voila!” laughs Armando.
Armando’s late sister Viviana came to visit in 1972. She married and lived on Tortola, over the years becoming a much-loved and respected architect in the BVI community. By this time, without even a dive boat, Armando had opened a dive centre called “Ocean Adventures” at Bolongo Bay. He took the guests by bus to Coki Beach at the east end of the island to teach them how to dive. After leaving Bolongo Bay, Armando purchased a 42-ft dive boat, Goldielocks.
Jacques Cousteau and his crew ventured to St. Thomas to film humpback whales for the movie Singing Whale. Armando jumped at the opportunity to work with Cousteau. Paying close attention to the filming, he knew this was a once-in-alifetime experience and that cinematography was in his future.
“By the end of the film, I knew I wanted to photograph sharks,” says Armando. “It was easy to find half a blue marlin for bait, but I needed a shark cage. I emerged from the theatre and saw a CocaCola machine, protected by a cage. It was perfect,”
Desperately wanting to work and dive with Cousteau, who at the time only had European divers on his team, Jenik remembers, “Cousteau was climbing the stairs onto the plane - he turned, threw his red stocking hat at me and said, ‘See you in Marseille in a few weeks!’ However, it was not meant to be. Sadly, just two weeks later, in 1979, Cousteau’s son, Phillippe, died at age 38, when his PBY Catalina flying boat crashed in the Tagus River near Lisbon. Soon after, Armando sold his beloved dive boat and moved to Tortola, where he ran the adventure diving and research vessel, Okeanos.
Film and Future
From adventure diving on the Okeanos, Armando developed his filming career and environmental work. In the early 1980’s, the movie, Weekend at Bernie’s II was filmed in St. Thomas. At first, Armando was hired to teach the actors how to dive, but he looked so much like Terry Kiser, the actor playing Bernie Lomax, that the director decided he should be the stunt man for the underwater scenes.
Many other underwater projects mark Armando’s long and storied career, from filming scenes for soap operas to working on underwater footage for The Magic of David Copperfield, an episode of 20/20 with Hugh Downs and Geraldo Rivera, searching for the wreck of San Ignacio in Anegada, BVI, and even training the great long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad to free dive in Patagonia to prepare her lungs for one of her ultra marathon swims.
Armando’s underwater photography has been published in GEO magazine and GQ, among others. Additionally, his work as both underwater director and cinematographer has been used in commercials of well-known brands, including MasterCard (the “Priceless” campaign), Virgin Islands Tourism, Don Q Cristal, Kent Cigarettes and Jet Tours. In 1990, he was awarded the prestigious Mobius award for best commercial.
“Every one of my pictures tells a story - and there are so many to tell!” exclaims Armando.
You can see more of Armando’s work as he fearlessly photographs racing yachts close up in the BVI on page 57.

Tradewinds Mexican Grill is a delightful casual dining spot built from shipping containers located directly opposite Cedar International School at Kingston, Tortola. Some new food options have been added to the Mexican-Caribbean fusion menu, which prides itself on being homemade wherever possible. LUXE EDIT
WATERFRONT NEIGHBOURHOODS
In part one of our four-part series on BVI neighbourhoods, Thomas Warner of BVI Sotheby’s International Realty takes Erin Paviour-Smith on an island-hopping tour of five of their hottest waterfront property listings.
BARAKA POINT
NAIL BAY - VIRGIN GORDA
Baraka Point Estate is a waterfront jewel in the crown of Virgin Gorda. It is a spectacular location in the neighborhood of Nail Bay, on a private headland between two pristine beaches, and is truly breathtaking.
The estate is set across two acres of lush tropical gardens and is successfully operating as an exclusive short-term rental with a team of six full-time staff.
The 12,000-square-foot villa offers flexible, spacious accommodation for up to sixteen guests in five ocean-view suites, two with adjoining bedrooms, plus a sixth principal suite overlooking Nail Bay Beach.
The interiors have been recently upgraded and are an eclectic blend of contemporary and ethnic styles featuring muted colours, kilims and hardwood furnishings, while exterior spaces overlook white coral stone terraces, a flat manicured lawn and the vast ocean beyond. Well-positioned for natural ventilation by cooling trade wind breezes, the villa is also airconditioned throughout for year-round comfort.
The main house is open-plan, with vaulted ceilings incorporating indoor and outdoor living, dining and entertainment areas, and a full-service bar and cocktail lounge, all leading to an infinity pool with spectacular
views. Beyond the pool is an expansive panoramic deck sunken into boulders at the water’s edge, creating an idyllic spot to watch magical BVI sunsets.
Nail Bay homeowners and guests can take advantage of private membership of Nail Bay Estate’s Sports Club, with tennis, squash, gym and spa facilities, plus Sugarcane Restaurant and a first-class golf course.

BLUNDER BAY ESTATES NORTH SOUND - VIRGIN GORDA
The North Sound of Virgin Gorda, also known as “The Billionaires Playground,” is the most exclusive sailing destination in the Caribbean. At its heart is Blunder Bay Estates, stretching along a mile of this celebrated coastline. The property totals sixty-six acres of gently sloping land leading to sandy beaches adorned with palm trees and exotic flora.
Plans are in place here for a world-class luxury resort comprising a mix of private residences, resort villas and amenities. There are forty-five parcels available, ranging in size from one-half to two acres, which can be combined as you wish.
Blunder Bay Estates can design your dream villa, manage the build, and deliver the keys to your home, or you can contract your own design and construction team.
Building over water is possible at Blunder Bay Estates. Whether you prefer a large hillside lot or waterfront with private dock, the utilities are below ground and ready for building to begin.
All BVI government permissions have been negotiated, so once your plans pass the architectural review, your team can start building. The owners have arranged an expedited landholder’s license approval process, so there will be little delay. Once construction is complete, owners of the residence villas can opt into the resort management plan or self-manage the villa.
A small restaurant and mega-yacht marina are already in use, and there are plans to extend both. Private docks are completed for the lots on the property that face the private island of Moskito, just a stone’s throw away across a quiet, deep-water cove.
Nowhere else can deep-water docks in front of your villa be a reality - ideal for an owner who wants to keep their boat in front of their villa. The seabed depth at the end of the private docks is twenty feet, so large yachts can safely pull up alongside. This is a unique opportunity to own a piece of what will soon be the best resort in this part of the Caribbean.

There are many possibilities for customisation, too, ranging from straightforward additions to the main house to a large boat basin that could accommodate yachts up to 60 feet. The government-approved boat basin could include a two-bedroom boathouse for family, friends or private yacht crew.
A large fruit and vegetable garden is another standout feature, along with thoughtful and well-organised storage, maintenance and utility areas - where every private island eventuality has been meticulously planned for. The sale includes two slips in the nearby
storm-safe marina, a large fleet of vehicles, two boats and equipment that caters to every need.
There are few properties in the Caribbean as stunning as this. When you consider that international travel from Tortola Beef Island International Airport is a short boat ride away, its value is clear.

QUART-A-NANCY POINT
COOPER ISLAND
Seize a rare opportunity to purchase a unique solarpowered oceanfront, outer island home, built to withstand Caribbean elements.
On the northeastern tip of Cooper Island, Quart-ANancy Point is set on 2.75 acres of land and comes with a private dock and government mooring. The property overlooks Manchioneel Bay and the Sir Francis Drake Channel with spectacular 180-degree northwestern-facing views.
The house is eco-friendly and self-sufficient, producing its own 110V power by using solar technology and battery storage. Access to ocean fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving are footsteps from your front door.
Truly an independent sanctuary, the main house is comprised of three bedrooms and two baths and features a large kitchen with covered outdoor dining, living, and BBQ areas, as well as spacious terraces.
The 50-foot, open-plan porch and west-facing panoramic views showcase spectacular sunsets across the Sir Francis Drake Channel.
Quart-A-Nancy Point is one of only five privately owned homes on Cooper Island and is accessible only by boat. It was originally built in the 1960s as an artist’s retreat and fully renovated in 2019. The timetested construction was built to last and has proven to withstand the largest known hurricane-force winds.
This quiet, peaceful retreat with an unforgettable view also offers easy access to Cooper Island Beach Club Restaurant and Bar. The sale includes all furnishings, two garages, a 12-ft dinghy with outboard, plus backup generators, tools, and equipment.

VILLA MARE AZZURRO LONG BAY - TORTOLA
Villa Mare Azzurro is a mere fifteen steps away from the crystalline waters of Long Bay Beach, on the northwestern side of Tortola. Gentle waves lap against the exterior natural stone breakwater walls, while continuous trade winds deliver cool breezes.
Recently renovated with meticulous attention to detail, with three levels of inviting Mediterranean-style living spaces and a lookout tower, this villa is impressive.
As you walk through the grand entranceway, enjoy the calming sound of the waves below, along with waterfall features in the pool a few feet away. This exquisite villa features high ceilings and travertine floors with a dramatic circular marble staircase that spirals gracefully upward to the villa’s lavish bedroom suites.
Revel in the open-concept gourmet kitchen with breakfast counter, high-end appliances, two heated massage pools, gym, expansive balconies off every room, and myriad glass sliding doors that disappear into the walls to bring the outside in.
This spacious villa can accommodate up to twelve people. There are three independent living areas, each with kitchen and spacious bedrooms with ensuites. The main house has two master bedrooms with ensuites and three dens, one of which is used as a sitting room that converts into a queen bedroom with ensuite bathroom.
Independent and yet attached to the main house is the one-bedroom king suite above the two-car garage, which comes with a kitchenette and private entrance.
This small apartment has total privacy and boasts an additional covered balcony with stunning ocean views. The independent yet interconnected twobedroom guest suite below, with its own pool, offers instant beach access.
Villa Mare Azzurro is one of only a few private residences along the highly desirable Long Bay Beach. It is designed for privacy and separation, and as several combined entertaining spaces and private verandas. MEET LONG-TIME BVI RESIDENT & REAL ESTATE EXPERT, THOMAS WARNER
BY JESSICA SANTOS
Thomas knows the BVI - And he is putting that knowledge to good use as Sales Associate at BVI Sotheby’s International Realty. Published author, restaurateur, financial controller, ferry captain, general manager, number cruncher: Tom has worn many hats during his years in the Virgin Islands and his present hat is looking good on him.
An avid sailor and captain, Tom grew up on and around the water with his family, including his ex-Navy father. He spent his childhood years in Antigua, where he developed a life-long love for the Caribbean. In his career in the USVI and BVI, he has managed restaurants, small resorts, and a number of other businesses. He was also appointed as a NAMS marine surveyor for the Lloyd’s Agent of St. Thomas, Michael Hall.
Tom combines his business background with his love of the islands to give his clients unique insights into life in the Virgin Islands. He has lived and worked with his wife and two sons on many of the islands in the BVI, and brings his extensive experience as a licensed captain to bear when describing the logistics of island life and construction.
For nine years Tom was Operations Manager on Norman Island, where the Warner family were the only inhabitants. Home to Pirate’s Bight, the largest restaurant in the BVI. Boats, engines, generators and equipment were all part of Tom’s daily routine. Here, Tom also honed his expertise as a diver, gardener, and sport fisherman.
Later, as the General Manager of Foxy’s on Jost van Dyke, Tom drew on his background to help
the world-famous establishment recover from the active storm season of 2017 and thrive during the subsequent recovery. In his next position at Blunder Bay in the North Sound of Virgin Gorda, he worked closely with the development team, making financial projections and analyses that would attract investors. His efforts continue today as the exclusive agent for Blunder Bay Estates.
One of Tom’s hobbies is to promote sport-fishing in the Virgin Islands by helping to organise tournaments that attract fishers from as far away as Florida and Texas. These annual events showcase the beauty of the islands, the bounty of the sea, and are always conducted in a sustainable, catch-andrelease format. Of course, visitors are invited to view a few villas while they’re here!
Through it all, Tom maintains an open-minded approach to understanding what makes things work. Whether doing an income analysis, understanding local weather patterns, or choosing the right crops for the soil, he has the knowledge that will simplify decision-making for any buyer.
His vast and varied experience gives him special insights into BVI real estate. He knows about the special attributes of Virgin Gorda, the central convenience of Tortola, and the quirky charms of Jost van Dyke and Great Camanoe because he has lived on them all, joined the communities, and forged relationships that can guide clients toward the real estate purchase of their dreams.
Tom never fails to bring his positive mindset to every client meeting and real estate transaction. It is his keen understanding of running a profitable business that enables him to see the financial potential and opportunities for improvement in any property purchase. His hands-on approach and strong communication skills make him the ideal realtor to guide you through the process of buying or selling property in the BVI.

What is an MLRO and why does your business need one
PHOTOGRAPHY BY THEO THOMAS & SCRUB ISLAND RESORT &
MARINA.
The 2024 amendments to the BVI Business Companies Act, the BVI Anti-Money Laundering
Regulations, and the Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Code of Practice have established a legal requirement for relevant businesses to appoint a Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO).
“These updates underscore the Virgin Islands’ commitment to upholding a strong, contemporary framework for combating financial crimes, ensuring that regulated entities are prepared to meet global AML and terrorist financing standards,” says Denise.
Restaurants, hotels, marinas, yachting companies, jewellery stores and real estate companies are increasingly required to have an MLRO. “Drawing attention to the critical need for MLRO and audit services in these industries is essential for ensuring compliance, safeguarding assets, and fostering trust” Denice continues.
Businesses in these sectors handle large transactions - often in cash. Hotels and restaurants, for example, process a high volume of daily transactions in which the use of cash is not unusual. “Making them vulnerable to exploitation for money laundering or financing terrorism, as cash leaves fewer digital trails” says Denice.
Marinas and yachting companies can expect to count high-net-worth individuals, including foreign
nationals, as their clients exposing themselves to the risk of money laundering especially if the funds received originate in countries with lax regulations or limited financial transparency. VIRGIN GORDA YACHT HARBOUR –A BOATER’S PARADISE
Proudly serving the BVI since the 1960s, the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour is the island’s original marina. With a long-established reputation for excellence, not just in the BVI but throughout the region, with continually expanding and improving facilities. “We keep moving forward and improving services” states Alejandro Chometowski, General Manager at the Yacht Harbour.
Centrally situated in St Thomas Bay, Spanish Town, the Yacht Harbour is just minutes away from the ferry dock (with Immigration & Customs clearance offices) and Virgin Gorda’s International Airport at Taddy Bay can be reached within 5 minutes by taxi.
MARINA
The 93-slip marina can accommodate boats of up to 130 feet in length and is equipped with all the services a visiting boater would expect. The retail outlets added recently have re-energised the Marina Mall area of the Yacht Harbour which include a coffee shop, dive shop, clothing and gift stores, liquor store, spa and more. The Town Centre Mall facilities include a bank, pharmacy, medical clinic, therapy centre and mobile phone service provider.
The marina is ideally placed to be the welcome arrival point for passengers on the mid-sized cruise ships that call in to Virgin Gorda. The cruise ships anchor at the edge of St Thomas Bay and the passengers are tendered to shore to be greeted by the ship’s staff, in a specially designated area of the marina. From there the passengers can join an island tour to visit the island’s top tourist spots or pass some time browsing in the marina shops.
The main fuel station in the area is found at the Yacht Harbour. It always has both gasoline and diesel available and large quantities of diesel can be delivered quickly and efficiently by speed pump. The fuel station is a secure and easy to dock location which can accommodate vessels of up to 150 feet.
The newly expanded Chandlery is owned and operated by the Yacht Harbour and is now located in the Town Centre Mall area. It stocks all the quality products you need to make a quick fix or to take care of a larger maintenance job.
The Yacht Harbour has an agreement with the Valley Taxi Association to ensure there are taxis waiting at the marina’s taxi stand 24 hours a day.
Book a slip for the night and take the opportunity to buy some extra provisions, squeeze in a treatment
at the spa or have a shower in the newly refurbished shower rooms. Then hop in a taxi to dine at one of the highly acclaimed restaurants nearby. Day visitors to the marina can secure a berth for the perfect start point to a visit to the Baths, Coppermine, Gorda Peak and other stunning Virgin Gorda scenic attractions and beaches.
BOATYARD
The Boatyard boasts a large team of experienced technicians to handle a full range of services, including painting, bottom painting, mechanics, fiberglass work, electrical and plumbing work. An emergency repair service is also available 24 hours a day.
The Yacht Harbour is already accepting bookings for storage for the 2025 hurricane season. Over the winter months the boatyard layout has been reconfigured to enable storage for up to 400 boats (dependent on size). The maximum dimensions of vessels that can be accommodated are 150ft in length, 40ft of width, a depth of 10ft and 350 tonnes.
Due to the capacity of the travel-lift (350 tonnes), vessels from USVI, Puerto Rico and further across the region choose Virgin Gorda for haul-out and storage, to safely pass the hurricane season. Email or call today to guarantee your spot for this season. Hauling-out will commence in June and continue until the end of August.
It can be no coincidence that the Boatyard at Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour is the boatyard of choice for the discerning boat owners of the territory. “We have a very good relationship with all the principal resorts, bars and restaurants of the BVI and we service all of their water assets” General Manager Alejandro Chometowski is proud to confirm.
Whether you are looking for a slip to spend the night, for a base to explore this beautiful island or to schedule some essential maintenance work, the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour is your first and only choice in the British Virgin Islands. FEARLESS PHOTOGRAPHER
For decades, Armando Jenik photographed racing yachts competing in The BVI Spring Regatta - Shooting in the water with his "split" camera as the yachts flew past just a couple of feet away.
“I like danger! After swimming with the Southern Right Whales in Patagonia in my youth, I was afraid of nothing” says Armando. He became a passionate photographer of sharks and other sea life, but was always looking for the next adrenalin-filled challenge.
“A sailboat looks like a shark upside down from the water, because of the keel” he says. Armando thought it would look great to shoot yachts with his split camera. So for one of the first Rolex regattas in St Thomas, he gave it a try by jumping into the water from the committee boat and swimming to the marker buoy. “I popped-up and snapped the yachts as they sped past. Because I used a wide lens, I needed to be very close - about two or three feet away. I got bumped a few times” he says matter of factly.
“I listened to the sound of the yachts breaking the water and because of the danger involved, I fell in love with it” he says. “After I moved to BVI, each year I would shoot the BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival.
When Pyewacket competed for the first time, Armando wanted a shot of her, but as she approached, the sun was in the wrong place. “I knew this was my chance, so I swam very hard and saw the boat approaching, then in a split second there was something coming towards me like a shark…..…It was the counter keel, and I didn’t know. The crew were screaming “Armando you are going to get killed!” It is a story of survival, but one of my best shots” he says.
THIS SPREAD: Pyewacket with its counter-keel speeding towards Armando. “It was a bit of a scary moment, but the photo is one of my favourites” he says.

The Josiah’s Bay Surf Classic competition is a highly anticipated fixture of the BVI calendar of events and a day not to be missed. Traditionally held a couple of weeks before the start of the Easter holidays (a Christmas edition also takes place) this competition has been the highlight of the surfing calendar since the first event in 2018.
Taking place on Saturday 29 March 2025, this year’s Easter Surf Classic competition promises to be a day filled with fun and good vibes for the entire family. It is a full day of heats for each age category and culminates in the finals and a prize and trophy giving ceremony. With a start time of 9am the event will run all day until 6pm (or until everyone has finished). Bring some shade and your beach chairs and settle in for the day to cheer on your favourite competitors.
In the Men’s Competition the age categories include Under 11s, 12-17 years, 18-39, 40+ and 55+. The Women’s Competition consists of Under 17s and 18+ categories. Pre-registration is highly recommended and the cost is $30 per entrant, which includes a Surf School shirt.
Newbies to surfing are welcomed to compete alongside the experienced surfers. This competition knows no age limits and last year’s event saw the youngest ever entrant at 6 years old and others ranging upwards to 76 years young. MC Al Broderick keeps the day running smoothly with lively commentary and music throughout.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase on the day. The Surf School collaborates with select vendors from the local community who set up their stalls to sell local food, drinks, arts and crafts so that they can make a little money for themselves or for charitygiving the event a mini-festival feel.
Demonstrating the Surf School’s strong commitment to the community, the event is run solely with volunteers and aims to cover its costs but not to turn a profit. The prizes and trophies are donated every year by local Tortola business Arawak Boutiques & Interiors. “All walks of life show up. Really it’s just a good vibe. Everyone is having fun and that’s how we want to keep it” says event organiser and Surf School BVI proprietor Steve Howes. When you are at the Surf School you really are part of the family.
The competition was originally created for resident BVI surfers but in recent years it has grabbed the attention of visitors from the US Virgin Islands and as far afield as the mainland US. The local surfers are always glad to have new contenders to compete against which inevitably raises the standard of the competition and gives the regulars a fresh challenge.
Instagram and flyers posted strategically around the island promote the competition each year, but wordof-mouth is always the most successful channel for informing the community of the upcoming event.
However, it is not just the Surf Classic that draws visitors to Josiah’s Bay. This pristine sandy beach enjoys the best swells traditionally from around Thanksgiving time until Easter. Boogie boards along with long and short surfboards are available to rent year-round, by the hour or by the week.
Surfing lessons are always available when there is a swell and make for a fantastic opportunity to create special memories whilst on vacation. Private lessons for individuals or groups can be arranged, advance booking is encouraged. After school surf clubs run during school term time and the Surf School
encourages the older students to get involved and help teach the younger students – another example of Steve and his team’s dedication to giving back to the community.
Looking for something different for your next birthday party or celebration? Parties and movie nights can be arranged by special request. Contact Steve for more details.
For more information and for reservations have a chat with Steve on the beach, or check out their Instagram for the latest news and updates.

TO VIRGIN GORDA, WITH LOVE
The Allamanda Gallery returns to its roots with a new store at Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour. Erin Paviour-Smith talks to its owner - business woman and photographer Amanda Baker about the twists and turns that have brought her back to where it all began.
BY
Thirty-six years ago Amanda was running a charter boat and taking photos of the BVI as a hobby. “I have so many great memories of Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour as the centre of the island back then. We stopped there during every charter, it was always full of boats - The Yacht Harbour was a tourist destination in itself” she says fondly.
Son Daniel arrived a few years later and after taking portraits of him and his friends, the hobby turned serious and Amanda’s photography business, Virgin Portraits, began in the year 2000. Soon she was the goto wedding photographer for high-end resorts in the BVI, including Little Dix Bay in Virgin Gorda.
From that moment, (along with my son Daniel), Allamanda Gallery has steered my life,” says Amanda. In 2012 the business expanded further with a store at Top of The Baths. “It felt very natural to open that store, because so much of my work was centred in Virgin Gorda - a little piece of my heart has always been on the island” she says with a smile.
Amanda continued to innovate her product line, using her photographic collection to design and create products featuring her iconic images. “There is something for everyone at The Allamanda Gallery. It’s important to me that there is an item to purchase for all budgets” she says.
In 2003, Amanda began her journey as a retailer, partnering with painter Lisa Gray. They opened The Gallery in one of the oldest wooden buildings on Main Street in Road Town. Amanda’s landscape photography was popular with charter guests to take home as a memento of their BVI experience. Working out a robust system for shipping the pieces to them back home, they never looked back.
Within three years, both Lisa and Amanda’s businesses were ready to flourish on their own, so Amanda found a new space further along Main Street and the first Allamanda Gallery was born.
ABOVE: Triptych on metal. BELOW: Bespoke silk scarves.
In 2014, Amanda moved from Main Street to a larger space at the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park where she was a foundation tenant. When the hurricanes of 2017 devastated the BVI and tourism was lost for a year, Amanda was forced to close the Virgin Gorda store and so began a story of survival for The Allamanda Gallery.
When the islands had almost recovered from the hurricanes, the pandemic struck in 2020, resulting in closed borders for the BVI and eventually forcing the closure of Allamanda Gallery at the Pier Park. Allamanda Gallery had survived two category five
hurricanes, a pandemic and a total of eight store fitouts” Amanda says.
Since this time, Allamanda Gallery has been operating from Tortola’s Soper’s Hole Marina (Frenchman’s Cay), her gallery there has gradually expanded and is thriving today. “Seven years after Irma, I’m so excited to reopen in Virgin Gorda and look forward to being based at the Yacht Harbour where I have many memories of my boating days”.
Make sure you stop by Allamanda Gallery at Soper’s Hole Marina or Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour where Amanda continues to innovate and is excited to launch many more new and creative products.

The Rosewood philosophy of “A Sense of Place” is alive and well on Virgin Gorda at the iconic Rosewood Little Dix Bay Resort. Sixty years after Laurance Rockefeller chose Little Dix Bay for the site of his visionary resort, Rosewood Little Dix Bay remains one of the world’s finest getaways—a luxurious retreat offering privacy and breathtaking natural beauty.
This private paradise situated on over 400 tropical acres was the perfect location of Katie and Philip’s destination wedding where turquoise waters lap against pristine beaches and the lush tropical setting beckons.
With the philosophy of the natural environment at the heart of its design and promoting sustainable luxury, the resort welcomes guests into a world of a tropical island paradise which was important to the couple.
With the help of their BVI based planner, Zoe Sorrentino of Evolve & Navanchor along with the team at Rosewood Little Dix Bay, the couple’s wedding day incorporated vibrant color and tropical elements with live music of a guitar soloist, 10 piece band and sax player to add to the couples relaxed yet elegant vision.
The ceremony was held in front of 120 close family and friends by the water’s edge. To complement the celebration, guests enjoyed a curated Chef’s menu from fresh locally sourced ingredients, signature drinks under the iconic pavilion and late night dancing under the stars with magnificent bay views.
A wedding at Rosewood Little Dix Bay is more than just a celebration; it’s a chance to create lasting memories with your loved ones in a truly magical setting that both reflects the couple’s unique style and the essence of this one of a kind Caribbean jewel.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT CYRIL B. ROMNEY TORTOLA PIER PARK
BY JESSICA SANTOS
The Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park is an openair shopping and dining facility spread across almost five acres in the heart of Road Town. It encompasses a 60 foot wide, 1,312 foot-long cruise ship pier that can berth ships up to a maximum tonnage of 180,000 GRT. Initially catering mainly to cruise passenger guests, it evolved to welcome charter and land-based guests, as well as local residents.
“After the hurricanes of 2017 and the COVID pandemic, had it not been for our local residents choosing to shop and dine at the Pier Park, many more of our tenants would have been severely challenged. Hence now we are very focused on the guest experience for all - whether that be cruise, charter, overnight or local residents” says Zoe Walcott, Deputy CEO.
Dining Experiences
Proving to be very successful are the immersive dining experiences that can be enjoyed by day visitors and those staying longer in the islands.
Authentic BVI cuisine is on the menu at Taste the BVI where guests can learn how to prepare local delicacies, using traditional BVI flavours and produce.
Coconut Lounge has introduced sizzling experiences where diners can cook their choice of protein on their own Lava Rock right at their table. A unique idea for a special celebration!
At Aromas Cigar & Martini Bar you can learn how to roll your own cigar to enjoy with a cocktail paired to complement your creation, all in the comfort
of the air-conditioned lounge or the terrace with harbour views.
Botella is one of the Pier Park’s providers of fine wines and spirits and the home of the locally distilled BVI Gin and BVI Vodka. Call in for a handson demonstration of gin-making whilst sipping on a refreshing cocktail.
Crazy Coconuts sells coconut water served in the husk and offers local businesses the opportunity to place their own branding on the coconuts for events and incentives.
No mall would be complete without a food court and The Boardwalk was devised to bring diners to the Pier Park and create diverse gastronomical experiences. An array of cuisines including African, Asian, Jamaican and Spanish food, burgers, seafood and renowned mixologists to name a few. All served with an ocean view.
Shopping
Following on from the success of the dining experiences there are plans to curate new shopping experiences.
“Almost 90% of the businesses at the Pier Park carry locally made products or offer locally based services. This is a number that the Pier Park management team are very proud of. From the outset, there has always been the requirement to create products and experiences that are rooted in the BVI” says Zoe.
House of Luxury has created a luxury BVI-branded watch collection and BVI specific Pandora charms which make the perfect gift whatever the occasion.
On trend fashion features prominently at the Pier Park and with all tastes and budgets catered for. Check out Taino Boutique, Passions by UMI, Blanc du Nil, Tropical Tortola and La Boutique for women’s fashions for all occasions.
Kougar’s store of sporting apparel is the official stockist of PUMA and is owned by the BVIs very own sporting legend, Kyron McMaster OBE. The world champion silver medalist and Olympian teamed up with PUMA to provide uniforms for ALL BVI Athletes serving as Ambassadors for the territory.
Jewellery & luxury goods
There are many luxury items to tempt you at the Pier Park, through well-established retailers such as Diamonds International, Effy, House of Luxury, Infinity Jewelry, Little Switzerland and Mi Amor. Those with discerning taste are given an all-access pass to the most celebrated brands and rare finds all in one place.
Shopaholics need not be concerned! Simply purchase an extra suitcase at LAND, or at House of Luxury you will find the MontBlanc brand.
A sense of community
Parents can let the children play on the centrally located grassy area as a prelude to treating them to yogurt at Swirlzz icecream, 34+ flavours of icecream at Manjack Creamery or running upstairs to Hashtag for the must have novelty items.
Community is at the core of the Pier Park’s ethos, and this is evident in the support for local suppliers, growers and creators of BVI products.
Events designed to draw the resident community together are regularly held in the beautiful surroundings.
Whether you are looking for a special gift, new outfit, souvenir of your travels, sweet treat, relaxing cocktail at the end of your workday or to learn a new skill - the Cyril B. Romney Pier Park is the place for you. The perfect pairing of locally grown talent with international luxury.
