President’s Message
Photo courtesy of Appelrouth Farah & Co.
On behalf of the board and past presidents, I would like to thank retiring Executive Director Ed Rosen for his 32 years of service to the Alper JCC. Ed endowed our Center with stability and continuity both through periods of great success and times of challenge. Those who know the Ed Rosen I do know it has never been about Ed Rosen. It has been about the family that needed a scholarship for daycare, the employee facing financial hardship, and the stability of our organization. During the most recent economic downturn, Ed pushed to make sure we not only maintained scholarships, but increased them, despite the Alper JCC feeling the same impact as many other organizations. Though Ed’s retirement is now official, I know he will continue to be a regular in our gym and a presence in our community for years to come. I would also like to welcome our new Executive Director, Steve Tepper, and his family to our JCC and community. Steve joins us from the East Valley JCC in Arizona, where he served as its Executive Director for the past nine years. Steve has more than 20 years of experience with the JCC community, a passion for Jewish culture, and a strong desire to find low-barrier methods to engage the community at large. If you see him on campus, please introduce yourself and welcome him to our community. Joshua Rader President, The Dave and Mary Alper JCC Vol. XXI, Issue I
Front&Center
The Alper JCC welcomes its new Executive Director, Steve Tepper A familiar face and leader in the national JCC movement has been handed the torch from our much-loved retired director, Ed Rosen. Another man of many achievements, Steve Tepper comes to us from the East Valley JCC in Chandler, AZ, where he was also Executive Director. Prior to that, he was Chief Operating Officer at the Barshop JCC in San Antonio, TX for three years, and even prior to that was the Director of Children, Youth, Family & Camping Services for the Tucson, AZ JCC. Mr. Tepper is responsible for creating The Center of Holocaust Education and Human Dignity in Chandler and an awardwinning, nationally recognized Holocaust remembrance program that has drawn well over 12,000
attendees. We are pleased to give a tropical welcome to Steve Tepper, and we look forward to many new milestones at the Alper JCC!

Life’s tough, but you’re tougher! by Meg McCarthy Alper JCC Fitness Director
“How are you?” It’s one of the most common greetings everywhere you go. We hear it all day long from strangers, friends, and coworkers, and we think nothing of it until things change. Then there’s the day we get the news that someone we love is sick, someone we know has
passed, the doctor needs to run another test because your results didn’t seem quite right, so on and so forth. Once we have these kinds of responses in mind depending on the circumstances, the question “how are you?” gives us a pause and just for a moment, we think to ourselves—“do they really want to know?” The answer may very well be that some people really do want to know how you are and what’s even more surprising is how many do care. People are amazing. If you let people know, they can pull you through something you could never do on your own. Sometimes we just need someone to be kind because we are at our limit and even the smallest kindness helps us make it through the day. The JCC is an amazing network of people—both the ones that work here and the members. I was raised to keep personal things personal as everyone
has their own burden to carry. I’ve worked here at the JCC for 12 years now and I have learned many lessons during this time, the most important one being that people will help you if you let them. Not an easy lesson for me but an

The outpouring of attendance at funerals is overwhelming, food collected for members and staff who are injured or sick, cards signed during difficult times, phone calls of concern and good wishes, congratulations for births

The food is always fresh and fantastic. You will have to wait while they cook your order, so allow yourself some time to wait or call ahead if you’re in a rush. The menu is online but nothing beats checking out the daily specials and smelling the mouth-watering food while you choose. and kids’ graduations, etc.— it’s amazing. The majority of the Alper JCC staff has been here 10 or more years. There is a reason for that. This is our home and the JCC is our family. We care about our members and the friendships we have cultivated throughout the years. Some of our members have met their spouses here while many of our adult members started out as kids in our ECD school or as summer camp counselors. That is all in addition to all of the friendships that have formed at the J, whether through sports for the kids or working out. My point is, the Alper JCC is a special place and I feel fortunate to be a part of it. If you have been away, please return as we’d love to see you taking care of yourself and working out. Holocaust Heroes: Fierce Females Tapestries by Linda Stein
Stephen Mack: Rockscapes of South Florida Furternick Family Art Gallery
Furternick Family Art Gallery
Mack’s photographs of South Florida rock pits and home development sites capture the illusion of the majestic landscapes of the West in the Ansel Adams tradition. Dramatic light, wideangle lenses, and an expert choice of camera and film elevate what would, to the naked eye, be seemingly nondescript scenery. PLUS: On Sunday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m., prior to the Keshet Chaim Dance Troupe at 3 p.m., meet the artist! On Monday, Jan. 25, in honor of Tu B’Shevat, enjoy the exhibition with brunch and talk by the Jewish Genealogical Society. Learn how to research your own family tree! Bring your laptop or use a JCC computer! $5/ person includes brunch and activity.
In her new series, sculptor Linda Stein embraces the medium of tapestry. Using a combination of text and image, her work tells the stories of 12 female heroes of the Holocaust. Stein pointedly chooses to focus on female figures, traditionally neglected in heroic and historic narratives. Gallery Nights are open for all Book Festival events. Also showing will be a Holocaust Remembrance book, donated by Gail and Stewart Appelrouth, to be read with Gallery staff assistance. View and read this remarkable Holocaust journal by a husband and wife; not to be missed!

Learning from the High Holidays Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur teach valuable lessons to young and old alike by Phyllis Bochman, Ed.D. ECD Director
As the new school year approaches in the ECD program, so do the Jewish High Holidays, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. There are so many ways that the Jewish holidays help guide our preschool curriculum during the year. For example, let’s think about Rosh Hashanah. I remember when I first taught preschool, many years ago, I learned that the word “Rosh“ means head in Hebrew and “Shana”
means year, so it makes sense to celebrate the head or beginning of the year like a birthday. In our preschool, celebrating the birthday of the world is so much fun as we highlight the beginning of the New Year with songs and a birthday cake and we use this special time to think about helping people, animals, and our planet. We greet people by saying “L’Shana Tova” to wish them a good year and we learn why we dip apples in honey to symbolize our wish for a sweet year. We can extend our learning by discussing bees and how honey is made. We can also learn about the bee colony and how working together can create something wonderful. The learning we can get from starting from a holiday lesson is limitless. Since children scaffold learning, making these types of connections are invaluable. When my own children would ask on Rosh Hashanah, “Why do we blow the shofar?,” I explained that the sound of
the blasts is a wake up call. This can encourage thinking about right and wrong and can help improve your children’s behavior in school or in your home. On Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, we teach the children to be a good friend, to try harder, to be kinder, all concepts that also help improve challenging preschool behavior. We have a song and dance that teaches, “let’s be friends, make amends, now it’s time to say I’m sorry.” Taking a multi-sensory approach to learning helps children learn more effectively. Certainly, teaching about saying “I’m sorry” or considering each other’s feelings couldn’t be more fun through the use of song and dance. Another interesting twist for older children is to compare the secular New Year to the Jewish New Year. The secular New Year is centered on the self: resolutions about personal improvement, such as losing weight, eating less,
and exercising more. The Jewish New Year is focused on others: resolutions on ways to help the less fortunate, called mitzvoth; or how to improve relationships with friends, relatives, and coworkers. A positive lesson for children is that it’s important to think about yourself, but we must also consider each other and the world we live in. While the song that is sung on the secular New Years Eve says, “may all acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind,” Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are about bringing others to mind, assessing the past year, and preparing to be more compassionate and kind to others. So now is the time for pretend bees and to become children again. Let’s face the challenge and create a community of helpers to make next year a brighter, sweeter year. I’d like to wish everyone a “Ktivah V’chatima Tova:” “may you be inscribed and sealed for a good year.” L’ Shana Tova!
