Spring is in the air and Summer Camp is on the horizon with registration underway! Summer is all about creating new friendships and getting out of one’s comfort zone. Recently a group of JCC staff members went on an amazing trip to Israel, most for the first time, resulting in new partnerships like the one we have with the city of Yerucham. Staff stayed in residents’ homes and built meaningful relationships, returning with valuable knowledge from a new adventure that happened when they left their comfort zones. Summer Camp is a great way for kids to get out of their comfort zones! With a ton of fun, one-of-a-kind experiences, camp is always an adventure - from late nights and field trips to Color War, Maccabia and everything in between. Our newest update is the $99 Summer Membership opportunity for new camp families. (p. 2) Robotics camp will be offered for campers entering grades 1-5, where young scientists and engineers can use their STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) skills to build their own LEGO robots! (p. 6) This spring and summer are filled with an array of activities and programs with something for everyone. Jump out of your comfort zone and get in on the action! Josh Rader, Alper JCC President

Spring Into Fitness and Wellness at the J by Jasonn Gonzalez JCC Fitness Center Director
Many of us are guilty of constantly doing the same thing yet expecting different results. This has been defined as insanity for many years; rumor has it that this was an ideology of the great Albert Einstein. If this is such a well known philosophy, why after so many years is it still not well-adapted? Simple: we are creatures of habit. While our city is so beautiful,
sometimes we prefer a run on the good ol’ treadmill. Whether it’s because of joint issues, weather, or comfort, there’s no more common piece the treadmill. In my 12-year practice in the fitness field, I can’t count how the many of the same people I’ve seen using treadmills just running along for 30-45 minutes, expecting something to change. Well, this is where creativity comes into play. It can even cut that duration on the treadmill in half! Give this a try: set the incline at 10%. Start off on a paced walk then go 30 seconds on a full sprint, followed by 30 seconds of an active rest. This can be repeated for a total of just 14 minutes to really get some serious intervals in while improving endurance, oxygen consumption and our favorite: calories burned. Other
variations of incorporating the treadmill into some creative intervals include side shuffles, sprints, backwards running and skipping. There are unfathomable amounts of ways to get creative with what you currently do. Fortunately for members of the Alper JCC Fitness Center, there are plenty of cardio options. Expresso interactive gaming bikes, a stepmill, stair climbers, a Concept II rower, Octane Lateral and Octane X-Rides are just a few choices. We also have classes to keep you going throughout the week, including Indoor Cycling, TRX, Water Aerobics, Yoga and more (included with your membership) Our certified personal trainers are also some of the best. A new addition, POUND, will be sure to get your
Center Staff: Pilar Santos Pilar Santos, Fitness Center Staff
Way before the sun starts to rise in the Miami sky, Pilar Santos is getting up in the middle of the night. She is the first employee to arrive at at the “J” to spread her own sunshine as she welcomes the early morning workout group to the Fitness Center. has a good start to the day because of her engaging personality! Not everyone knows, however, that before working at her current position, Pilar came to the JCC because a friend told her about an opening at the preschool for a teaching assistant. So, for the last twenty six years, Pilar has been an integral part of our community and she sees the people at the “J” as a part of her wider family which she values immensely! In 1990 she started working part time as a teaching assistant. Pilar loved working with the preschoolers where she could spread her natural ability to nurture. In ‘96 when she was looking for a few more hours, a position became available at the front desk and it seemed that Pilar would be a “natural” in that capacity. She was, and continues to be to this day. It would be hard to imagine a morning at the “J” without Pilar. Pilar was born in Santiago de Cuba and by the time she was eight years old, her father left the family on the island as he forged a new life in the US. He came to Miami and a year later sent for the rest of the family who arrived in October 1959. She remembers having to adjust and accommodate because after a year
in Miami, they moved to New York where they settled in Woodside Queens. She had to assimilate into American life even more rapidly as a result of that move, and grew up in NY attending elementary and high school. It wasn’t until 1985 when she moved back to Miami with her husband and children. There was extended family here and the climate was more conducive to her family’s needs. Pilar’s experience in the preschool prepared her well for her favorite role which is being “Abuella” to her two beautiful grandchildren who live nearby, Victoria 6 and Nicholas 3. These lucky tykes are fortunate enough to spend time with their grandmother every day when she fetches them from school after her workday at The “J” comes to an end. For Pilar, she has the best of all worlds, a job she loves where she is with people who value her and the daily connection to the grandkids. For fun, Pilar enjoys vacations, usually Caribbean cruises, with her children, grandchildren and extended family. She considers herself to be a very fortunate woman and we are equally fortunate in having her as a significant part of our JCC village.

The exhibit is about immigration for ALL people from EVERY country! The experiences of one family act as an illustration of the experience every immigrant shares, and will encourage children to find out more about their own family’s journey. We are all immigrants. Our Schlichim have always been so creative and loved by both campers and staff. They lead the “Ruach” or Jewish spirit program, help to organize the Oneg Shabbats and plan Israel Day. If you or someone you know is interested in housing our Shlichim for a period of time during the summer, if not the whole summer, please contact Elyse Molk at 305-271-9000 X263.

20th Annual Special Needs Fundraiser presents
THE BEST OF THE SECOND CITY The 20th Annual Fundraiser was an overwhelming success and we thank the community for their support. “The Best of The Second City” once again kept the audience laughing with their hilarious improv skits and songs. We honored founders Judy and Dr. Bob Mezey and their aunt and uncle Joan and Milton Bagley for their generous support over the years. The Silent Auction items were great gifts to bid on with all funds raised going for a good cause. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeurves, cocktails and a delicious dessert reception. (Continued on page 12.)
