JCC Maccabi Games® & ArtsFest® Special Edition
02 | CenterStage | alperjcc.org
Message from the President & Executive Director
It gives us great pleasure to announce what we believe to be the event of 2017; the Alper JCC has been chosen as the official host of the 2017 JCC Maccabi Games® and ArtsFest® here in Miami. Since 1993, we have sent a delegation of teens to this yearly Olympic style event and are proud to be able to host for the second time (first time in 2001). The week of August 6-11 we will have more than 1200 Jewish athletes and artists, as well as 300 coaches and JCC staff, from around the United States and several countries, converging in Miami. With community partnerships, including one with the University of Miami, we will bring our community together. We look forward to showing these teens and guests a phenomenal experience and we hope that you will join us in this endeavor. Josh Rader, President Steve Tepper, Executive Director
THE 2017 JCC MACCABI GAMES® & ARTSFEST® IN HONOR OF HERSCHEL ROSENTHAL
We are pleased to announce that, through the generosity of the Rosenthal/Miller/Appelrouth family, the 2017 JCC Maccabi Games® and ArtsFest® will honor their Patriarch, Herschel Rosenthal. As a past President and lifelong champion of Miami’s YMHA, the Young Men’s Hebrew Association, now known as the Dave & Mary Alper Jewish Community Center, Herschel’s memory is appropriately honored through the Games. His love of sports, family, community and country, along with his commitment to excellence in the pursuit of Jewish values make him a true mensch and a role model for the teenagers competing in the Games. Born on August 13, 1927, in Omaha, Nebraska, Herschel arrived in Miami with his family when he was a toddler. After graduating from Miami Senior High, he served in the United States Navy and obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in accounting from the University of Miami. Herschel became a Certified Public Accountant and practiced accounting until 1955 when he joined Flagler Federal Savings & Loan Association as its Comptroller. He eventually became the institution’s president, leading Flagler Federal until his retirement in 1992. A South Florida pioneer and a visionary leader of our Jewish and secular communities, he created a legacy of service, accomplishment, generosity, love and happiness to forever guide us -- his family, friends, business colleagues and all who knew or will come to know the community treasure that was Herschel Rosenthal. To remember and proudly honor him, we dedicate the 2017 JCC Maccabi Games® and ArtsFest® in honor of Herschel Rosenthal.

Last year on Give Miami Day 2015, $7.1 million was raised for more than 600 local nonprofits from more than 17,000 donors spanning the city, nation and globe. Give Miami Day allows all individuals in our community to make a philanthropic impact by collectively supporting our local nonprofit organizations. Twenty-four hours of giving begins at 12:00 a.m. November 17 and ends at 12:00 a.m. on November 18, 2016. Individuals may view online profiles of more than 600 nonprofit organizations serving Miami-Dade County and make a charitable gift here on givemiamiday.org. The Miami Foundation and our partners will maximize the community’s generosity by making a bonus gift for every donation between $25 and $10,000 received on November 17 through givemiamiday.org.
