Front&Center Chanukah Candle Lighting and Family Night
On Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at 5 p.m., for the fourth night of Chanukah, the Alper JCC will host a special candle lighting reception in the Greenfield Courtyard (behind Building 3). After the candles are lit, enjoy latkes, doughnuts, and
fun activities for kids of all ages. K–6 graders can create colorful Sand Art Menorahs to take home, and for the little ones a Lego Menorah building contest and book reading will take place in the Preschool building at 6 p.m. See you there!

As we wind down the year and welcome 2016, I want to encourage everyone to spend time with their families and enjoy the Center and the sense of community it provides. Join our celebration in the Greenfield Courtyard on Dec. 9, the fourth night of Chanukah, to enjoy latkes, music, and more with family and friends. And be sure to flip through this issue and class guide to read up on all of the fun additions coming to the J this winter. We have exciting new athletic programs for adults in the basketball gym, including a dodgeball league to let off some steam and pickleball on Mondays and Wednesdays. In the Yoga/Dance Studio in Bldg. 5, a new line of classes is underway, from Hot Yoga to Recovery Flow and even kids’ yoga (see our group fitness schedule for details). The J Dance Company, starting in January, will offer a wide variety of dance classes for kids of all ages. If you’re a basketball fan, don’t miss the Alper JCC All-Star Games on Dec. 12, where teens can test their skills at the 3-point or slam dunk contests or even play on our all-star team. Whatever your age or interest may be, there’s something for everyone at the J. What I learned from Team FIT Kids by Meg McCarthy Alper JCC Fitness Director
The Alper JCC’s Team FIT Night in October was a fun and informative evening for children and parents. While the kids were exploring a fitness class with one of our trainers, Dana Cohen, MS, RD, Clinical Nutrition Manager with Baptist Hospital of
Miami, offered a free nutrition presentation for families. These are just some of the interesting and helpful facts that Dana shared: • Start with a smaller plate at meal times • Each day, aim for five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables, three servings of low fat dairy, and lean protein such as fish, beans, and tofu • On any given day, one third of children eat at a fast food restaurant • In the past five decades, some fast food portion sizes have increased by 600 percent • Nowadays, the average fast food meal contains a whopping 1,500 calories • Children eat nearly twice as many calories (770) at restaurants as they do during a meal at home (420) • Obesity poses many

health risks, including diabetes, high blood pressure, poor sleep (sleep apnea), joint pain, and back pain Eat when you are hungry and stop when you are comfortably full Take your time eating Work to differenentiate between emotional and physical hunger Consume a combination of protein, carb, and low fat diet Emphasize whole grain

From Home to Home: Jewish Immigration to America Lisa Ann Watson Children’s Discovery Museum Jan. 10–May 1, 2016 Open Sundays, Noon–4 p.m. We are all immigrants. At some point, all of our families made the decision to leave their countries and embark upon the exciting, frightening and ultimately hope-filled journey to a new land. We live together, interacting in countless ways, and though we are from many different places, we have much in common. From Home to Home: Jewish Immigration to America is a handson exhibit for ALL children of every ethnicity, religion and country of origin. It tells the immigration story through the experiences of a Jewish family but all immigrants wrestle with the same basic issues. Designed for children ages 6 to 12, From Home to Home, with 29 hands-on modules, is a multi-sensory exploration of an important topic for every family in South Florida, allowing children to walk in the shoes of other children leaving behind the familiarity of neighborhoods, schools, friends, food and language to establish a new life. Parents, children and grandchildren will be inspired to learn more about their family origins. Educationally rich and filled with art activities that empower children to create and express themselves, it will serve as a valuable tool emphasizing how we are all more alike than different, to help dispel stereotyping and foster mutual appreciation.

Dixie Highway This interactive workshop is for parents and teachers of young children, birth to age three who are interested in activities and play experiences that build a strong foundation for later learning and promote enriched relationships and self-esteem for children. Play is of critical importance to children’s development–it is the way young children learn about the world, themselves, and others. Play provides opportunities for social and emotional growth, large and small muscle development, concentration on tasks, language and literacy skills, and development of creativity and thinking skills. registration policies Allow 2–4 days to process your registration. Unless notified, assume you have been enrolled in your class. Limited class size is important not only for the safety of your children, but for the quality of our programs. As soon as a class is filled to capacity, registration will close; new classes will form when possible. The JCC reserves the right to cancel any class and issue refunds. Make-up classes will be scheduled only in the event of an instructor’s cancellation or a building closing. After classes begin, contact program director/instructor for changes. Please do not call the registrar.
