FIRST TRACKS

A LOOK AHEAD...

It is July 21, 2026. The Club has been bustling with activity. Our third annual ‘Wine and Jazz’ under the stars was a huge hit. Wineries from all over Ontario have been eager to showcase their new releases for the summer, along with another stellar performance from the jazz quartet. Men with Knives once again outdid themselves with their four-course paired meal. The table service while eating under the stars, learning about the various vintages, and listening to jazz is really something else. I had to pace myself, knowing that I was going to participate in the Weekend Adventure Series combo hike/bike/swim event. It has become one of my favourites, and I love ending it at the Alpine beach where my kids await, and we all take a late afternoon dip and paddleboard while chowing down on great burgers from the Beach Grill. There is no doubt that my summers at Alpine are now rivalling the social activity we see in the winter.

It is now December 17, 2030. I can’t believe this is the third weekend of hitting the slopes. I knew seven years ago when the Club invested in new snowmaking that it was the right thing to do – but never did I imagine how great the season becomes when you start at the beginning of December. Those first few weekends are so great to get the ski legs going, new equipment broken in, lockers organized, and then head into the holiday break relaxed and able to enjoy time with family and friends. I am quite excited as the Club has installed another pizza oven at the Northside Café. I am also SKIDOODLE 2022 4

really enjoying the increased capacity from the high-speed chair at the North. And when the day is done, it is great to see the interclub hockey team in action on our home rink taking on their rivals from Georgian Peaks. The league is in full swing, and I can’t understand how these kids have such endless energy – but they do.

It is now December 2021. We are looking ahead in this issue of the Skidoodle Magazine. I wanted to take the time to introduce myself as a new Board member within the Marketing & Communications portfolio here at Alpine. I have grown up at the Club and am proud to have my children represent the third generation of Diamonds at Alpine. We have a great hill, and I am committed, along with the other Board members, to making Alpine the best private club on the ridge. In case you don’t know who I am – I have no problem breaking out the vintage 1988 Hershey League Spyder Racing Sweater as I try to keep up with the SOD racers from my era. So, don’t be a stranger – we would love to hear your ideas on how we can achieve our goal to make Alpine truly the best private club experience.

PRESIDENT’S UPDATE

Welcome back for another great season at Alpine. It was wonderful to see many of you at the Fall Festival in September. It is a pleasure to be able to attend events once again.

The uncertainty and change in the past year have been difficult for everyone, but it is in life’s most challenging moments that we learn who we are and what is most important to us. We have learned to slow down and live in the present. We cherish our time together outdoors doing what we love.

As we look ahead, the future is bright for Alpine.

Many of us have made changes in our lives. More members are choosing to visit the Blue Mountains area year-round. Some have moved permanently to Collingwood and are looking for year-round activities. Introductory members are inquiring about an expanded selection of activities for their families to enjoy with the Alpine community.

In response to this demand, last season we announced an expanded partnership with Craigleith, including shared crosscountry skiing trails, and a larger network of snowshoeing routes that can be hiked year-round. For the spring, we are exploring partnerships to bring mountain biking to the property. Biking was a hit with the kids at the Fall Festival! We are also investigating opportunities for members to enjoy an organized event every season, catered by our partner Men with Knives.

Our club is much more than skiing and boarding. It’s about establishing a sense of community, spending time with friends and family, and embracing the outdoors year-round.

This year, the Board will be unveiling a multi-year vision for Alpine that builds on that sense of community and goal to continue to be the best private ski resort on the Ridge (Simcoe Readers’ Choice Awards, 2019-2021). The vision is exciting, and we look forward to engaging with our members throughout the strategic planning process. For a glimpse into the possibilities, please read GM Corner and Alpine – Our Future articles ahead.

Alpine is fortunate to have a strong volunteer Board in place, to manage the affairs of the Club with the best interests of members in mind. Please join me in recognizing our retired directors for their contributions: Dave Grant (Member Engagement), Jacquie Newall Chapman (Marketing & Communications), and Kerina Williamson (Marketing & Communications). Joining the Board are Michael Gelfand (Member Engagement) and Matthew Diamond (Marketing & Communications).

I would like to thank Bill Williams, the Alpine staff, and Men with Knives for all their hard work and dedication so we can enjoy Alpine with our friends and family today and in the future.

In closing, I ask our Alpine community to take a moment to reflect on our founding member, Hans Kent who passed away earlier this year. An original member and Alpine’s first president, Hans is the reason that Alpine exists for our enjoyment.

DIRECTORS ROUND TABLE

STEVEN KOSTER, PAST PRESIDENT #alpinespringskiing Alpine has a long history of looking ahead – think back to the Big Picture, the Heritage Plan, and the Legacy Plan. These had a central goal – to balance our infrastructure to service the requirements of our membership.

We all believe that Alpine offers the best private club experience on the ridge. From generations of families who continue to call Alpine their home, to the new members who have just joined, the glue that binds us is the Club and our Alpine family.

We must continue to invest in our Club for all our families, especially our youth.

The youth of Alpine are the future of the Club. It is critical that we invest in that future – as has been done over the past 60 years, most recently with the clubhouse and as we will continue to do in the future, investing in chairlifts, snowmaking and other projects.

The Strategic Planning Committee has been working hard on a multi-year vision looking at the current and future needs of the Club and is looking forward to engaging with our members this year to further develop and formalize the plan.

Last year was a special year as COVID-19 resulted in numerous changes in our operations. One of the actions taken by the Board was to significantly reduce capital expenditures to preserve cash due to the uncertainty from the pandemic. As a result, this year looks very different – our capital expenditures budget is $700,000, which is higher than normal to make up for some of last year’s underinvestment.

Highlights of this year’s investments include new terrain park features, new ski racks, snowmaking equipment, and a new bridge to the North. The cost of the bridge was covered by a very generous member donation from Henry and Eberhard Leistner – a gift for which we are very grateful. With this donation included, our capital expenditures are greater than $900,000. This higherthan-normal investment will help to ensure that we can continue to provide the best experience on the ridge. If you are interested in donating funds to accelerate our investments in Alpine’s future, please contact the office.

We have certainly weathered challenging times this past year, but out of that experience comes optimism for the future. We’ve seen the resilience, ingenuity, and determination of our management team, staff, and volunteers to adapt and deliver the safest recreational experience possible. I am proud to serve alongside a committed group of Board members who bring to the table their love of Alpine, together with their varied professional skills and experience, to support Management and provide direction and problem-solving in ways we never could have foreseen!

As our family donned our Alpine caps for a Thanksgiving hike on the ridge, it made me smile to think of the many happy memories of family times at Alpine over the years. We love the fall colours, but we’re excited to THINK SNOW and look ahead to more memory-making days on the slopes with family and friends in the Alpine community.

And that’s what makes me optimistic for the future at Alpine – just think of all this Club can accomplish as we collectively turn our attention and creative energy to our quest to continually improve the member experience at Alpine!

As we all know, the future of Alpine lies with our new members. This season will see one of our largest cohort of introductory members in Alpine’s history! Interestingly, when we ask new families why they chose Alpine, the resounding answer is often our welcoming atmosphere. They make the decision to stay because they can see themselves and future generations of their family enjoying the Club.

It’s an incredible testament to the members and staff that this feeling is so clearly conveyed. I am excited for the future of Alpine, for our new families, and to continue to share the feelings of excitement that Alpine brings!

There are not enough positive things to say about Alpine’s on-hill programs. Our heavily subscribed programs continue to expand and evolve to meet the needs of our membership. This is possible with the support we receive from our members and with the efforts of our amazing staff. Priorities for the future include developing and improving critical infrastructure to support athlete development both on and off the hill. Alpine athletes compete at the provincial, national, and even international level. We are invested in continuing to support our athletes to reach and exceed their goals through the highest calibre program offerings.

2021 presented challenges to both Alpine’s Food & Beverage and the Men with Knives teams. The biggest challenge was the loss of Gareth Carter, who was the heart of MWK. Gareth is and will be sorely missed by all. Even while dealing with the loss, Julie and the MWK team are committed to keeping Alpine’s food offering in its place as the best of any of the clubs on the ridge and top caterer in the region – something Gareth was proud of building. MWK continues to hold the title of Simcoe Readers’ Choice Awards’ ‘Favourite Catering Company’ for the last five years.

Alpine is sixty years young and it only gets better from here! As I look to the season ahead, I do so with great anticipation and excitement. The success of the Club has always been our adaptability to whatever is thrown at us, and our common belief in the Alpine family. It is our strength and something that we should all be proud of. As we continue to evolve as a club and our membership, we as a Board will continue to listen to you to gain a deeper understanding as to how we can enhance the Alpine experience, making it a compelling and inviting place to be for all ages, today and in the future. This year, we look to celebrate our past, our future, and each other like never before. Here’s to another 60!

Last year, the pandemic restrictions forced us to rethink how we operate and in doing so we made some changes that proved to be a big hit, including: • increased outdoor seating with picnic tables, • Slopeside food truck, • increased patio service, • take-home dinners and après kits, and • online ordering and pre-ordering.

Continuing to push forward this year, MWK is creating menu offerings we can all enjoy, and as of today, we expect to have indoor dining back! But don’t worry, we won’t lose those picnic tables, as they created a safe and enjoyable outdoor atmosphere, and we will continue to improve the service using our pre-order options. MWK is working with a local caterer to provide a unique experience at the Upper Chalet – an outdoor wood-fired grill, picnic tables, a burning fire, and great food will create another feature here at the top of Alpine.

We are looking forward to this season; making some turns with friends, enjoying a great lunch, a beer, and taking home a delicious dinner. We are hopeful that we can welcome back the Après experience this season – we all will be ready.

We are excited to be unveiling a brand-new bridge to the North this season! I had the pleasure of getting to know Henry Leistner, one of our founding members this fall, as we spent some time together working on the new bridge. We discovered that we have common interests in manufacturing, specifically furniture, and in electric cars, specifically Teslas. He spent time recounting the early days of Alpine, cutting runs, repairing T-bars, and driving his car over the creek before there was even a bridge! What has struck me about him is how much Henry looks forward to things – the approaching ski season, his impending Tesla delivery, and making the Club better for future members.

Henry and his brothers have spent a lifetime contributing to the Club. Even after sixty years, he is still thinking about how to improve the experience and infrastructure at Alpine, with their time, their labour, and their financial support. I received news of Henry’s brother, Eberhard, only hours after our last visit to review the bridge construction. It was sad to hear of his passing, and I felt for Henry and his family that Eberhard would not be able to see the realization of his generous donation. As you cross over the new bridge this winter, I hope you take a moment to think about the contributions of our founding members, several of whom have passed this year, and how they have made the Club what it is today. I look forward to having a few runs with my new friend Henry this season, and to having a run or two in honour of Eberhard.

I started skiing at Alpine in 1979 (yes, I still have the badge). I raced, coached, instructed, and nothing makes me happier than ripping up Long John’s with my Stockli’s! I have three children, who are all active at the Club, and of course my wife, who will snowshoe three times a day if she can. We walk to the hill each day from our place at Alpine Springs and love to hike and bike here in the summer. I love sports of all types. I am a passionate marketer/entrepreneur and teach at IVEY once a year. I can’t wait to try new things with the Board in our quest to make Alpine the best club on the ridge.

NAME: Matthew Diamond PORTFOLIO: Marketing FAVOURITE ALPINE RUN: Long Johns YEARS AT ALPINE: 2022 is year 43 for me!

EXPERIENCE: Raced, Coached/Taught at Alpine, Level 2 CSIA, Level 1 CSCF (but haven’t coached in a while) FAMILY: My wife Nisa, and three children, Jaryd, Darya and Rachel. But if it wasn’t for my parents, Gail and Leonard, I may have never discovered Alpine.

FAVOURITE DRINK: Scotch (Auchentoshan, Balvenie, Deveron) BEST ALPINE STORY: Hershey Bronze Race Year, winning MVP based on finishing the final race on one ski (faulty Marker Bindings) – and learning the hard way that Salomon Snowblades are NOT meant for powder.

When you stand at the top of Alpine on a gorgeous day, blue sky above and fresh snow below, you savour the moment, then chart the course for your run. The possibilities are endless, but one thing is certain, you will make it your own. You’ll lose yourself in a few turns, then head back to the lift to do it again – another run, more choices, a myriad of opportunities. What do you want to do next? Whether it’s your next run or your passion for Alpine Ski Club in general, looking ahead is what it’s all about. How can it be even more amazing than it is now? This is what we should all be asking ourselves as we get set to hit ‘go’ on the 61st season at Alpine.

How do we pull together to make our winters even better? How do we improve and expand our current slate of events? What can we do now to move closer to our goal of making Alpine our home away from home 365 days a year? How do we set the next generation of Alpine members up for success while ensuring the Club continues to serve the members who have been here for decades? The answers will all be found within the membership. Dream big, plan, and execute as only Alpine can.

DAVE GRANT, MEMBER ENGAGEMENT It is hard to believe that four years on the Board have now passed and I am officially “retired.” When I reflect on what my time on the Board has meant the word that most comes to mind is gratitude.

Gratitude to all of the members who engage so enthusiastically with the Club and help make Alpine the wonderful place it is.

Gratitude to the member volunteers who dedicate their time and knowledge to various events throughout the year and without whom these events would not be possible.

Gratitude to my fellow Board members, both current and past, who have volunteered countless hours to ensure Alpine has been and will continue to be run with member experience at the forefront.

And finally, gratitude to the management and staff. COVID-19 dealt an incredibly challenging hand and the staff delivered the best possible experience from member engagement, to programs to fiscal prudence. It was truly remarkable.

Over the last several years, Men’s Days, Ladies’ Days and our Après-ski events have grown to be among the best events on the ridge and it has been very rewarding to see the level of member engagement.

As a retiring Marketing & Communications Director, it’s a bit ironic that I’ve been at a loss for words to express what I’ve learned most from my experience at Alpine. Where do I begin when I have learned so much? Then, at Alpine’s Fall Festival, it suddenly struck me.

Outdoor sports are what we do – family is who we are.

It may sound simple, but as I looked across the terrace that day, the joy of members and friends coming together again was beautifully palpable. It’s been so long since we’ve been able to look forward and enjoy each other’s company in person. At that moment, I couldn’t help but reflect on what we have all been through – individually and together. Since March 2020, I’ve heard countless touching stories of members supporting one another through the most trying times.

That’s what family is all about.

I am so excited to see Alpine’s next chapter and all the great things we will do together as Alpine’s family. I would like to thank my fellow Board members, the Management team, and the staff. Your passion, dedication, and tireless efforts are truly inspiring. We are all incredibly fortunate to share a community that cares so much.

The Alpine community showed creativity and perseverance last year to make a challenging season innovative, memorable, and safe. As we head into the next phase of Alpine’s evolution, I am excited about our continued growth in new members, our expanded offerings both on and off the slopes, and our strengthened community. We have so much to be proud of – and that solid platform will allow us to continue to grow, diversify and differentiate.

A DREAM. A VISION. A REALITY.

That is how Alpine started and how we continue to move forward and grow.

Great hills, strong snowmaking, expert grooming, steep runs, an infrastructure to support everything; truly downhill, defined. Chalets overlooking the Summit, located at the North, and our clubhouse, built on a ledge giving just enough height to enjoy the sparkling blue waters of Georgian Bay and the view of the hills. A perfect yearround venue. Home to Alpine members and host to so many more.

Memories have been made here: weddings, celebrations, socials, too many great events to list. Once upon a time, this was the vision.

Today, it is our reality.

Fast forward these dreams, visions, and planning into the future... what do we see?

On the hill, an updated state-of-the-art snowmaking system. Flip the switch and make snow at even warmer temperatures. The envy of any winter resort. Need we say more? First and foremost, we love our winter snow sports.

Chairlifts have been updated including a high-speed quad on the North. On the South, the Arrowhead Chair is now a beautiful new full-length fixed grip. The troublesome mid-station unloading is gone. You can now freely ski or ride the entirety of the run we know as Alpine. Beginners are enjoying their new intermediate moving sidewalk accessing the perfect terrain for a solid progression from the Slopeside area.

The North terrain park and half pipe area have been redesigned allowing for a surface lift to access both race training hill space and the terrain features. Everyone is happy!

The building upgrades have seen a new area embracing the Ski Patrol and Pro Room building. Imagine a two-story building with slope access from a second-story terrace directly to lower ABC. Room for athletes visiting from other clubs, maybe even a small café service.

The Upper Chalet, I can see it now: a state-of-the-art mini clubhouse, modern, organic in design embracing all of the beauty of the view from the Summit. The deck is large, and the spring skiing is in full swing. Nothing like a BBQ, a beverage, and a view!

The administration building is gone. There is a newly located building that compliments the design of the clubhouse, hosting our full-time administration staff, the ski and snowboard shop, and state of the art member locker rooms with showers and change rooms. Add to this building a gym that would be open year-round, completing the new summer club’s outdoor amenities: tennis, pickleball, and swimming.

Did I mention that we installed underground parking and paved the upper surface of the parking lot?

Dreams or reality? The future is bright. Our future reality equals the vision of our Boards, past, present and future, and the foresight of a membership who can make the dreams come true.

Alpine’s future has never shone so brightly. I am personally excited to see what Alpine dreams will be made of. Over the years I know I have witnessed many dreams unfold, for that, I consider myself extremely lucky.

The one thing all athletes share is how important their sport is to them, but they cannot reach their full potential on their own.

They need to balance their sport and the dedication to training and competing with other “life” commitments, and of course, the financial aspect of achieving their goals.

How does Alpine help them in pursuing their goals and assist them to focus on the training that they diligently put into their personal goals and successes?

Over the years, Alpine has been privileged to be a part of many athletes’ journeys to success, and we hope to continue this critical involvement that every athlete thrives on. We believe that each new season is the potential start of the career of a future champion.

We provide instructional programs to get them started, coaching to prepare them for competition, and venues where they can compete.

Many of these components of their competitive career are supported through the Alpine community and their dedication to our ongoing fundraising efforts.

The infrastructure required to support our athletes is critical to their success. Race equipment for both ski and snowboard disciplines allows our athletes to train in safe and challenging environments.

Our freeski and freestyle snowboard athletes rely on our park builds, features and maintenance throughout the year. All of this infrastructure and training is showcased when Alpine becomes the host venue for the various competitions from grassroots levels

to Masters! All of these pieces of success depend on member support and sponsorship.

As we move out of this pandemic and look to our future, we need to put the pedal to the metal and help our rising stars make up for the lost time. How can you help? Annually members have supported our fundraising efforts through the donation program aligned with our dues payments.

AN UPDATE ON OUR ELITE ATHLETES

ABBY VAN GRONINGEN CANADIAN NEXT-GEN ALPINE SNOWBOARD TEAM I’m stoked to have already kicked off the start of my season in September with a five-week training camp in Italy. With the pandemic being a daily challenge and travel across the ocean to Europe, I decided to stay overseas last season to train and compete on the European Tour and World Cup events.

I was graced with opportunities in training last season that aided in huge strides in my performance. I’m determined to continue my progress as we head to our next camp in Nakiska, Alberta early November and for the first competition in Austria!

BEN HELDMAN CANADIAN NEXT-GEN ALPINE SNOWBOARD TEAM I am very grateful to be able to keep training through the pandemic with the support of Alpine Ski Club. Last year was a very unusual season, but I was lucky to get a World Cup spot at two races in Europe and had a personal best in placing 37th. I finished last season at Junior Worlds in Russia, where I placed 5th. I am very thankful for my funding from Alpine as it has allowed me to build a home gym in my garage to stay fit in the offSKIDOODLE 2022 16

season while gyms were closed in Ontario. The whole summer, my focus was getting myself into the best shape possible heading into the season; this includes building muscle strength, explosiveness, and endurance to optimize my performance in training and racing.

We just finished up our 5-week camp in Europe, focusing a lot on technical skills that will be essential moving into this season.

The first camp of the season is generally the toughest physically since we are focusing on volume and time on snow while setting the theme/standard for the season. Our next training camp is at Nakiska in Alberta, where we will focus on race prep. This means bringing in all the technical skills we worked on in September-October and bringing it into a replicated race environment in training. Here we will fine-tune technique, equipment, and mental toughness before the racing starts. I have always found these pre-season training camps to be the most crucial for my season, as it’s an opportunity to build confidence and comfort on my snowboard. I’m very excited for the upcoming season as it looks like there will be lots of racing in Europe but also in North America too. My first big event of the season is at the World University Games in Lucerne, Switzerland, December 14-15. This will be my first World University Games, so I am very excited about this new experience.

After this event, the season will involve a lot of travelling for training and races, going between NORAM’s, Europa Cups and maybe even some World Cups until the end of March. Then I will prepare for my final World Junior Championships in Valmalenco, Italy, which will be my final race of the season. A big thanks to Alpine Ski Club for supporting my season!

RILEY KILMER-CHOI CANADIAN NEXT-GEN ALPINE SNOWBOARD TEAM After making the difficult decision not to travel and compete during the pandemic last season, I am more motivated than ever to make a return to competitive snowboarding this coming winter! Pre-season training has already begun, with a training camp in Europe this past October, and an upcoming one in Calgary this November. Competitively, I am entering the season with the goal of finishing in the top 3 overall on the North American Cup tour. I will also be competing at all European and World Cup events for which I qualify that work with my schedule.

Simultaneously, I will also be completing the final year of my Bachelor of Engineering degree at Concordia University!

WEIGHTED STEP UPS: 8-10 REPS EACH LEG • Use a bench or even just your stairs - the higher the step/ bench, the harder it is • Start without a weight, if necessary • Don’t rely on your rear leg too much Top tip: avoid leaning too far forward, and press out of your lead leg (the one on the bench) Muscles worked: quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, adductors

SKI RACING TIP Coach Louis Florjancic U16 OCup Head Coach

Thank you for the opportunity to introduce myself in this season’s Skidoodle. My name is Louis Florjancic, and I am very excited to be part of the Alpine family. I started skiing around the early age of three or four; like most of us I don’t remember any of this, but some photos still get passed around to remind me. Our family is almost always the first people to teach us on our first days on snow. I was very lucky to grow up with a father that loved skiing and I can honestly say that the love that he has for the sport was infectious for me and many of his friends.

Between the ages of 10-20, I was enrolled in racing programs at Georgian Peaks and was lucky to have a bunch of coaches that were fun and engaging. We continued to work on my craft and I was able to move up the ranks, and when my family felt the National Ski Academy would provide the best opportunity for my future goals we enrolled. I was thrilled as I knew many other successful athletes had come out of the Academy. From there I advanced to the Provincial Ski Team and competed for a couple more years until it was time to go away to school. I feel grateful that most of my friends today I met through my years of ski racing.

Ski racing and skiing, in general, provide lifelong friendships that only grow stronger at clubs like Alpine. Many of these friends I’m speaking about are current Alpine members. These members will be teaching their kids the basics very soon. Creating an environment so that it is fun (at any age) is most important, in my opinion. A fun environment engages an athlete to do their best. You will not accomplish much in 20 one-minute runs if it’s not any fun.

For instance, I like to set the focus for each day’s session and then ask the athletes what drill may work best with this focus. Example: “This morning’s session will be focused on the downhill ski. What is a good drill that isolates this?” A common response would be lifting the inside ski. Then I may ask the group “what slope would be appropriate for this?” Now they have chosen the drill and the slope within the framework I have set. Lastly, I would ask my group to remember to keep their tip lower than your tail as that will keep your body stacked and balanced. The goal here is to enable the athlete to take some ownership over the lesson while keeping them engaged.

So, if you understand my story, I truly believe the coach, instructor, family member or friends’ duty is to create a fun environment to learn in, keep it simple, and share your love of the sport. When we do this, we will have talented lifelong skiers, creating lifelong friendships.

Before becoming a coach, I spent 12 years racing at Alpine. Since the time I joined the small team, Alpine’s program has developed into one of the premier racing programs in the country, with athletes competing in local races all the way to World Cups.

If I could describe myself in one word, it would be competitive. I like to compete; to push the limits of what I am capable of – and to find success. As athletes, we spend a lot of time thinking about winning, imagining the feeling of standing on the podium, and dreaming of the competitions we will attend, but oftentimes we fail to consider the question: what does it take to win? In order to improve at alpine snowboarding, or any sport for that matter, athletes need to stop focusing on winning, and become masters of looking to the future, and developing a plan to achieve their goals. My focus for the racing program this year is on helping our racers understand what it takes to improve and become the best snowboarders they can be.

One of the first things any snowboarder should do when setting their goal is to clearly define what they want to achieve. Do they want to win the Provincial Championship, Nationals, or the Olympics? Each of these goals requires different commitments, processes, and time, but until we know what we want to achieve we cannot start the process of working towards it. The next thing I ask my athletes is this: is your goal attainable, and realistic? This is NOT to say, “are you good enough?” One of my favourite quotes shared by coach Tim Notke is “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” If the goal is to make it to the Olympics, I will support my athletes every step of the way, but in order for that goal to be attainable, they need to put in more work than someone whose goal is to win provincials. If two athletes both want to make the Olympics, and both train three days a week on snow, it’s the remaining four days of the week, and how those athletes spend their time that will determine who meets their goal. Finally, every athlete needs to set a timeline for their goals. When someone says, “I want to go to the Olympics,” that’s a great goal, but the Olympics in Beijing are in 4 months, and those athletes competing have been preparing for the games for 10 years. When we set a timeline for our goals, we can avoid disappointment from unrealistic timelines, and celebrate the small successes we meet on the path to achieving the end result.

Everyone has different goals in snowboarding, but a well-crafted goal can help riders of any level be the best boarder they can be.

WELCOME BACK, SOCIAL

While our ambitious social plans for Alpine’s 60th season were disrupted in 2021, we found a silver lining as we saw our members enjoying the property in a new way.

The uptake on activities like tobogganing, snowshoeing, Strava hiking challenges, and skating on the rink was a joy to witness. Truly, our dogs might have had the best winter with extra-long walks as they explored our trails with their families. On the social scene, we held as many virtual/off-site activities as possible, including a snowman challenge, craft contests, hot chocolate bomb kits and the popular après-to-go kits. Once reopened, we experienced consistent bluebird days and we loved seeing our members get out and show their flair on our ‘Spirit Days.’

As we move into 2022, we look forward to reintroducing many of your favourite events, starting with the President’s Family Après on December 31st with live music from member band, Ridin’ the ‘Pine and fireworks at dusk to welcome you back and ring in the new year. On New Year’s Day, leave the cooking to Men with Knives and SKIDOODLE 2022 24

join us for brunch before hitting the hill. While safety remains our top priority, we are excited to see the clubhouse reopen for dining and bar service, which means we can welcome back the après.

Après-to-go kits will continue to be offered for you to enjoy at the clubhouse, on the terrace or to take the après home with you.

We are also excited to be moving forward with Men’s Day on Friday, January 28, and Ladies’ Day on Friday, March 4, which we know are a highlight of the winter for many of you. These events will see an emphasis on outdoor fun and activities as we reclaim our traditions of skiing or riding from the first chair to the last.

Kid’s activities will be back with an outdoor focus: think capture the flag, organized games and parent-supervised tobogganing dates.

Take-home craft kits are also underway and don’t forget the Dummy Downhill and Festival Day in March!

We can’t wait to welcome you back and bring ‘social’ back to life at Alpine!

Picture yourself carving perfect ‘S’ turns down Look Ma late on a Saturday afternoon in January. Suddenly you hear a strange loud sound coming from the clubhouse – sounds like bagpipes. Then it hits you – it must be the Robbie Burns après-ski! Ever since you joined Alpine, the memories of many fabulous après events come back to you, like oysters by Rodney’s, the Dummy Downhill, Retro Day, and for the last ten years or so, the tribute to the great Scottish Poet Robbie Burns on January 25.

The original and present organizers, Brian and Leslie McManus, recruited me to pipe in the haggis at the first event as they had seen me perform at a fundraiser for my pipe band, the Beinn Gorm Highlanders of Collingwood (Beinn Gorm is Gaelic for Blue Mountain). It was such a success that they hired the whole band for the years following. A highlight for me was Tim reciting the “Ode to the Haggis” with no need for a microphone, accompanied by the waving of a large, wicked-looking knife.

Needless to say, the kids were mesmerized and the adults were stunned into silence at the performance (the free single malt samples might have been a factor).

Barb and I got in a few days of skiing last year, mainly mid-week, but of course, due to the pandemic, there were no après-skis last season. We missed seeing our old friends on the slopes and look forward to making up for it this coming season. My two grandsons are signed up for racing again so maybe the Snow Gods and Bill Williams willing, we’ll put the pandemic behind us and look forward to another day of deep (Ontario) powder and sunny days on the slopes.

And a word of caution – do not ski in a kilt – especially down ‘Downdraft.’

As we navigate how to keep the lunch and dinner tables full, the caesars mixed and taps pouring, we have a new reality to face as the purchasing, preparation, service and promotion of food have all changed. The pandemic has seen all of us face shortages of certain ingredients and skyrocketing prices. In addition, the changes to how we eat and socialize safely have led to new service models, for example, the QR code menu, the growth of home delivery options, online ordering, Plexiglas, and single-serve packaging. On top of these changes, the food industry suffered the greatest loss of jobs during the pandemic, which has led to a staffing crisis with many people leaving the industry. The MWK team has had to be creative to rebuild and implement changes including an increased focus on local food and partnerships, a hunt for new ingredients and creativity in menus, and a transition to online ordering, revamped packaging and simplified menus to utilize our team as efficiently as possible.

THIS YEAR’S HIDDEN SECRET: SKIP THE LINE Online and advance ordering will be at the heart of eating safely this season. Members can select their Saturday or Sunday lunch options in advance and skip the line. Family picnics and platters, as well as a selection of favourite lunch items, will be available to order through the Alpine website and mobile platform with direct charging to member accounts. With the clubhouse set to operate at full capacity, the key will be to eliminate congestion in the food service areas. QR code menus will be available throughout the clubhouse promoting different food options such as prepared and frozen meals and Après-to-go kits, as well as tableside service for bar and coffee bar items. As we kick off the season, our team will be available to help guide you through the online options and get you set to beat the rush with advanced ordering.

THE UPPER CHALET To continue to build the Alpine food experience, this year we are continuing the tradition of inviting a local vendor to showcase their food at the Upper Chalet. Joseph and Alejandra Griffin of Loco por el Asado are bringing the membership their Argentinian outdoor BBQ, empanadas, hot drinks, and snacks with picnic tables and a bonfire. Joseph will be familiar to members as one of our MWK faces from years past as well as a farmer’s market staple in the region and a frequent vendor at the Collingwood Brewery this past summer. Working closely with Mother Nature, our goal is to create an outdoor dining experience second-to-none. We are excited to strengthen the Alpine food culture by supporting local vendors and building partnerships.

THE “KNIVES” BEHIND THE SCENES The past six months have seen MWK in a period of re-growth and we are entering the season with a new energy and new look. The magic of our kitchen is in combining the old and the new to create a delicious recipe. Leading our winter team is Ashlea Kennedy as General Manager aka ‘Mountain Ninja’. Ashlea’s role is to keep the kitchen and staff out front working together and communicating to deliver a great service and product. You will find her behind the bar, at the fryer or delivering take-out. Supporting her in the back is a team of sharp “Knives” as we like to call them. Jamal Benabdeslam will be entering his first winter as Head Chef/Kitchen Manager. With expertise at ski clubs and restaurants in Simcoe County, his inventory and pricing skills, development of recipes, and management of the kitchen team will ensure we can continue to offer a great menu and competitive price point despite challenging changes in the industry. Working alongside Jamal, Rebecca York will continue to manage our line crew and has moved into the role of Assistant Kitchen Manager. Part of our team for over five years, The sharing of food has always been part of the human story. From Qesem Cave near Tel Aviv comes evidence of ancient meals prepared at a 300,000-year-old hearth, the oldest ever found, where diners gathered to eat together. Retrieved from the ashes of Vesuvius: a circular loaf of bread with scoring marks, baked to be divided. “To break bread together,” a phrase as old as the Bible, captures the power of a meal to forge relationships, bury anger, provoke laughter. Children make mud pies, have tea parties, trade snacks to make friends, and mimic the rituals of adults. They celebrate with sweets from the time of their first birthday, and the association of food with love will continue throughout life—and in some belief systems, into the afterlife. Consider the cultures that leave delicacies graveside to let the departed know they are not forgotten. And even when times are tough, the urge to celebrate endures. In the Antarctic in 1902, during Robert Falcon Scott’s Discovery expedition, the men prepared a fancy meal for Midwinter Day, the shortest day and longest night of the year. Hefty provisions had been brought on board. Forty-five live sheep were slaughtered and hung from the rigging, frozen by the elements until it was time to feast. The cold, the darkness, and the isolation were forgotten for a while. “With such a dinner,” Scott wrote, “we agreed that life in the Antarctic Regions was worth living.”

So, what does this all mean for Alpine Ski Club and our future?

It means that it has never been brighter. Over the next decade, we will likely see a continued migration of people out of Toronto and into Collingwood and other areas that can offer an improved lifestyle. We are already seeing this happen as people can work wherever, whenever. But that is only one side of the equation for our club. As families continue to value time together, the demand for private ski clubs will only increase. Property values continue to rise in Collingwood and there is limited hill space. With more and more people moving to Collingwood, purchasing property, and making it a seasonal home, the summer and shoulder seasons will also be highly valued. Alpine can play a key role in helping those who migrate here to enjoy their new lifestyle. We have the most magnificent clubhouse, a large property with sweeping views of the Escarpment and the Bay, ample recreation and social activities, and a close-knit membership and community.

With these changes in the area comes extensive opportunities for Alpine. Let’s start with winter; we will continue to invest in making the overall experience at Alpine ‘the best on the ridge’. This isn’t just about skiing and snowboarding – this is about snowshoeing,

cross-country, hiking, skating, and apres-ski events – there is no limit. Our creativity is at a peak and we aim to continue to drive our member engagement. We also hope to ensure that mid-week when our Club is less busy it can be enjoyed not just by guests but also by businesses and corporations who need an escape. By offering a VIP mid-week experience unmatched by other clubs, we can further support the growth of our Club. Our digital and social assets and footprint will evolve, and we can attract sponsors who value the attractive demographics of our families. There is so much more we can do, and we will find a way to experiment with new initiatives and ideas to attract new members, drive revenue, invest back into the Club, and of course, keep our members happy.

And what about the shoulder seasons? Offering opportunities for hiking, biking, exploring, and gathering together will create an extended community for the Club year-round. We believe that Alpine can evolve over time to offer more value to more people on more days than just the winter season.

Finally, there is the summer season. Imagine camps running for both children and adults, concerts under the stars, and movie nights in

the parking lot. Imagine hiking, biking, yoga, fitness facilities, and the ability to stop in for a meal or a drink with friends all summer long.

Not to mention Alpine’s hosting capabilities with a robust calendar filled with weddings, private parties, conferences, trade shows, and corporate events. All of these opportunities not only support the Club financially but offer Alpine more opportunities to grow and expand on our experience.

The bottom line is that we are really only just scratching the surface for what a premium, year-round, family-oriented club can be. As the demographics continue to shift in Collingwood and the surrounding area, and the population grows, Alpine needs to be positioned as the best club on the ridge, offering the most for our members and building upon our legacy as the place where memories are made that last a lifetime.

Finally, Alpine’s Management and Board are excited to engage our membership this season in order to further develop and formalize the long-term strategic plan and vision for the Club. Stay tuned for more information on this exciting next chapter for Alpine.

If you have yet to discover our incredible network of snowshoe trails that span the beautiful Escarpment terrain up, across and down our property – sometimes sharing with our neighbours Craigleith Ski Club – there is no time like the present! These trails have been built and maintained by our snowshoe committee, which is made up of enthusiastic member volunteers always looking for ways to expand and improve upon their work. The trails are well marked and the committee has built beautiful bridges and installed handrails in certain areas, not to mention cutting new trails for your outdoor recreational pleasure. TRY OUT CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING! We are very excited that we have a new activity open to Alpine members as of last season: cross-country skiing! Craigleith and Alpine are working together to expand our trail system for our members, which now includes a machine-groomed and tracked trail for classic and skate skiing at the top of the hill. Members may hike up or park at the top (corner bend at Side Rd. 21 and 4th Line) to access the trail. The ~4km route loops along ‘Farm Road’ to the top of Craigleith Ski Club and back.

Our snowshoe committee is enthusiastic and driven to continue to improve upon our trail system to provide new opportunities for you to get out there and enjoy the view! They have even put together a new smartphone app to help you navigate the trails, which you can read about on page 38.

THE MEHTA FAMILY Joined in 2014 We joined the Alpine family in 2014. At the time, our son Rohan was nine years old and keen on Snowboard Alpine Racing. We realized that the best way for him to fulfil his dream was to join a club. Alpine just felt right, and with the OEST team training there, it made sense.

Our daughter Sia was five years old at the time and we loved the independence that Alpine gave her. Once we were comfortable with her ability to handle the bar on the lift, she was on her own and thrilled!

Both kids have progressed in their racing programs. Rohan is now a Level 2 Snowboard Instructor, and hoping to go to university out west, following the big mountains! Sia can’t wait to begin her U14 O Cup ski race program this winter, especially since it will begin with a pre-season camp in Sun Peaks, B.C.

Over the years, we have realized the comfort of Alpine. The few times that our children have had injuries, we were informed within minutes, through multiple sources. Everyone watches over each other and is more than happy to help when the need arises.

We have met wonderful people, and made lifelong friends. It is always such a happy day when the season at Alpine begins and everyone is excited to be on the slopes and reconnect with friends.

As the children grow up and follow their own paths, we will continue to enjoy our winter life at Alpine. With regular training in racing programs, the kids are experts and have a great passion for their respective snow sports. They will carry this love with them always.

THE ALPINE FAMILY

THE BRAUN-TOPOLSKI FAMILY Joined in 2018 To say that our family has embraced the Alpine way of life can be summed up by the name of our puppy, Rossignol Alpine Topolski.

Our family’s journey to Alpine began, like so many others, at Blue Mountain. We would trek up on weekends, always enjoying the skiing and family time, but never bonding with the community or the mountain. Then, one Saturday that we will never forget, our very dear friends, the Baker-Morris’, who had just joined a ‘private ski club’, dropped off Alpine merchandise (swag) and began what they termed their ‘long play recruitment effort’.

The weather on our first day at Alpine was perfect. The feeling we had that day made the weather look terrible. It wasn’t the conditions.

It wasn’t the food (though that helped!). It was the immediate sense of community, the feeling that we had found an extended family. Our decision was easily made. We joined within ten minutes.

Since that first day, our Alpine family has grown. We have made countless new friends and encouraged some of our old ones to join. More importantly, our children have embraced the Alpine way of life. Leaving aside their overuse of charging hot chocolate and cookies to our account, they have made friendships that we hope will last a lifetime. Any future weddings can only happen at the base of Lovers Lane!

From the outset, we wanted to give back to the Alpine community.

Every year we have been ambassadors to new member families, hoping to convey our experience to others and we regularly

participate in events in the evenings and otherwise (bring back Whiskylicious!). On a more serious note, we are particularly proud of Alpine’s continued commitment to the community through such activities as Track3, which we participate in.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed everything. It quickly became apparent that family would play an increased role of importance as we, like so many others, navigated a new reality of quarantine. Alpine became our new home. We spent most of the year hiking its trails with our boys and puppy, seeing the mountain with fresh eyes. While we could not go inside or ski, Alpine was with us.

When Alpine was finally able to reopen, albeit, with strict conditions, rather than focusing on the negative, the larger Alpine family met outdoors every weekend recognizing how lucky we were to be together again. The winter was amazing and one of our most memorable.

We believe our future is intertwined with Alpine’s. As the Alpine family grows, so does our experience at the Club. One of our sons is now an Alpine instructor, teaching the next generation of club members. The other we hope will do the same when old enough. The two of us often think that we would love to join the Ski Patrol. We know, certainly, that Alpine will be part of our family for generations to come.

Having been a member at Alpine for 20 years, it has become a truly special place for my family and now fiancé. One of our first dates was a fun-filled weekend of snowboarding down Arrowhead, Lovers Lane, hot chocolate in the Summit Chalet, and showing off how Alpine does aprèsski! Having made so many unforgettable memories at this club, I knew Alpine was the perfect spot for a proposal. I reached out to Kim Giffen and the Alpine events team to help bring my idea to life, and they were thrilled to be a part of it. The plan was to go on a hike to the Summit Chalet and set up a sign in the windows that would read, “Will you marry me, Jenny?” Kim and her staff helped us set up the signage on the secondstorey window, so it would be perfectly visible when we came out of the forest, SKIDOODLE 2022 42

overlooking the picturesque background of Georgian Bay. We lucked out with a break in the weather for our hike, and the proposal went exactly as I had hoped. She said yes!

By Kaylie Dankevy I started skiing at Alpine when I was three, turning to snowboarding at age seven, and for the past 16 years, I’ve worked in programs as a snowboard pro and coach.

When Eric and I started dating seven years ago, he knew that snowboarding was a big part of my life and with no hesitation, accepted my offer to come up to Alpine and give it a shot. After a winter of dedicating time to a few falls, a sore body, and multiple coaches taking him for runs and giving him

tips, he really got the hang of it. Fast forward to five winters later, when he coordinated the perfect Alpine snowboarding proposal – planning a full surprise, hiding away near the deck at Wrong Turn, and had my brother ride over with him where he was waiting for me with ring in hand. When it was time to start planning the wedding, Alpine seemed like the only logical choice! On November 6, 2021, after a few delays, we were finally able to get it done. While there wasn’t any snow on the ground, it was the best day at the perfect spot!

MEGAN & TIM Megan grew up at Alpine and shared her love of the mountain with Tim early on in their relationship. They spent many weekends of their long-distance relationship meeting up on the slopes and celebrating at après-ski. Tim knew it would be the perfect place to pop the question, and the couple recently held their wedding here in early December!
