WHAT IS ARCHITECTURE... TO ME?

1


ARCHITECTURE IS THE DESIGN OF A FUNCTIONAL STAGE FOR THE MANY HUMAN ACTIVITIES THAT HAVE DEVELOPED THROUGH CULTURAL NEEDS. IT IS ALSO THE DESIGN FOR THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN FUNCTIONAL FORM AND VISUAL AESTHETICS. IT MUST BE ABLE TO SUPPORT THE DIFFERENT NEEDS OF CLIENT IN AN EFFECTIVE AND MEANINGFUL WAY. THIS DEFINITION HAS CONTINUED TO GROW AND CHANGE SLIGHTLY THROUGH THE MANY ARCHITECTURAL PERIODS, ALTHOUGH THE FIELD OF ARCHITECTURE HAS REMAINED A PRACTICE OF THE HAND. TODAY THE FIELD IS CHANGING TO INCLUDE THE USAGE OF BIM SOFTWARES, PARAMETRIC TOOLS, AND ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS TOOLS. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THESE TYPES OF TECHNIQUES HAVE BEGAN TO WEAVE THEIR INFLUENCE INTO THE FIELD AND REVOLUTIONIZE THE ROLE IN WHICH ARCHITECTS PLAY IN THE PROCESS OF MAKING ARCHITECTURE. THROUGH PARAMETRIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS TOOLS THE DESIGN OF ARCHITECTURE HAS SEEN A MUCH WIDER RANGE OF PASSIVE AND ACTIVE SYSTEMS BEING DEVELOPED. THE ABILITY FOR DESIGNERS TO DESIGN FOR VARIOUS DIFFERENCES IN CLIMATE WITH A HIGH LEVEL OF ACCURACY IS REVOLUTIONIZING THE POSSIBILITIES OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND EVEN THE WAY WE SEE ARCHITECTURE. PROGRESSING THESE TYPES OF TECHNOLOGIES IN THE FUTURE IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF ARCHITECTS GROWING UP. I WANT TO HELP PROGRESS ALONG WITH THIS MOVEMENT AND BE ABLE TO CREATE TRULY ORGANIC AND FUNCTIONAL FORMS THROUGH THE USE OF MATHEMATICAL, AND PARAMETRIC RELATIONSHIPS. OBJECTIVE: THIS COURSE INTRODUCES SPACIAL HIERARCHY, REPETITION, AND PATTERNS IN ARCHITECTURAL FORM. PRIMARY, SECONDARY, AND TERTIARY SPACES AND THE CONCEPTS OF THRESHOLD AND SPATIAL TRANSITION ARE EXPLORED.

IN THIS PROJECT THE DESIGN STARTED OFF AS JUST A SMALL KIT OF WOODEN PARTS AND A SMALL BOARD. AT THE END THROUGH REPETITION AND THE MAKING OF PATTERNS THROUGH DIFFERENT GEOMETRIC TRANSLATIONS I CREATE A FINISHED WOODEN MODEL.

OBJECTIVE: THIS COURSE INTRODUCES STRUCTURE, PROGRAM AND SITE ALONG WITH ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF DIFFERENT CLIMATE ZONES. IT BUILDS ON THE CONCEPTS OF FUNDAMENTALS I INCLUDING USAGE OF SPACIAL HIERARCHY AND THE USE OF PASSIVE SYSTEMS.

TYBEE ISLAND SPA THIS PROJECT IS A SPA LOCATED ON TYBEE ISLAND, GEORGIA. THE SITE WAS IS LOCATED ON TOP OF A SMALL PIECE OF LAND WHERE A MILITARY FORT WAS BUILT TO HOST THREE TURRET GUNS THAT FACED OUT TOWARD THE OCEAN. THE PROGRAM INCLUDES SEVERAL SPA TREATMENTS SUCH AS THERMAL BATHS AND MASSAGE AREAS BOTH INDOOR AND OUTDOOR.

STRUCTURAL GRID

THE ROOF OF THIS STRUCTURE IS DESIGNED TO FUNNEL THE WIND THROUGH THE BUILDING AND CREATE PASSIVE VENTILATION THROUGH THE ENTIRE STRUCTURE. IT USES CROSS VENTILATION AS WELL AS SEVERAL LIGHT TABLES TO REFLECT LIGHT FURTHER INTO THE STRUCTURE.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF HOW MOST STRUCTURES ARE CONSTRUCTED AND THE METHODS USED IN TRANSLATING ARCHITECTURAL IDEAS INTO CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS THAT TURN IN FINAL DELIVERABLES ON A REAL BUILDING PROJECT.

DOG HOUSE GROUP: AMORAE DELANY MORIAH SNOWDEN ALEX ROSS THIS PROJECT WAS WORKING WITH THE PROCESS OF CASTING USING CONCRETE AND STEEL REINFORCEMENTS. THROUGH THIS EXERCISE I DESIGNED AND BUILT AN EXTERIOR WOOD MOLD FOR A CHAIR SHAPE AND THEN POURED A CONCRETE MOLD OF IT.

THIS PROJECT WAS WORKING WITH A GROUP AND DOING THE CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS AND CONSTRUCTING OF A SMALL DOG HOUSE THAT WAS LATER DONATED TO CHARITY. MY GROUP DECIDED TO DESIGN FOR SMALL DOGS AND BUILT A MULTI-LEVEL HOME WITH VARIOUS SMALL WINDOWS AND A SMALL RAMP SYSTEM ON THE INTERIOR.

OBJECTIVE: THIS COURSE INTRODUCES HUMAN FACTORS RELATED TO SITE AND DESIGNING FOR AREAS WITH MINIMAL RESOURCES AND BUILDING TECHNIQUES. SOME OTHER ASPECTS OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR ARE STUDIED AND APPLIED TO THE DESIGN OF AN EFFICIENT SITE PLAN THAT COULD SUPPORT THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN PUBLIC, PRIVATE, AND SEMI-PRIVATE SPACES.

DESIGN BUILD this project was to do a quick charrette style design build project with the entire studio class. the design was a small shed and garden walkway that would act to assist the people at second harvest in savannah, georgia. in construction we investigated the building techniques of ethiopia by making rammed earth tiles for the garden area and using similar construction techniques as workers.

TO CREATE THE RAMMED EARTH BENCHES WE CREATED A SMALL WOODEN MOLD THAT COULD BE USED TO PACK THE EARTH INTO RECTANGULAR BENCHES THAT WE SET AT VARIOUS POINTS ALONG A PATHWAY. WE USED A COMBINATION OF CONCRETE AND VARIOUS SOIL TYPES TO CREATE IT.

OBJECTIVE: THIS COURSE FOCUSES ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE BUILDING AND THE SITE AS WELL AS DESIGNING FOR A SPECIFIC CLIENT BASE. IT ALSO INTRODUCED A MUCH MORE COMPLEX PROGRAM AND FOCUSED ON DESIGNING FUNCTIONAL SPACIAL ARRANGEMENTS AND FUNCTIONAL SPACES.

THIS PROJECT WAS DESIGNING A SPA FOR A SMALL ISLAND NEAR TYBEE ISLAND IN SAVANNAH, GEORGIA. THE SITE IS LOCATED IN THE MARSHES OF THE EAST COAST AND IS ALSO THE SITE FOR A NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT PLANED TO BE BUILT IN THE NEAR FUTURE. THE SPA IS TO BE WITH THIS CLIENT BASE IN MIND AS WELL AS THE EFFECTS OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT ON MARSH LANDS.

THIS PROJECT IS A SMALL COASTAL EDUCATION CENTER AND AQUARIUM FOR A SITE NEAR TYBEE ISLAND NEAR SAVANNAH, GEORGIA. THE PROGRAM INCLUDED A PEDESTRIAN AND VEHICULAR BRIDGE TO ACT AS A BRIDGE BETWEEN SAVANNAH AND TYBEE BY CONNECTING TO THE 6 MILE RAILROAD LINE THAT HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN CONVERTED INTO A SCENIC GREEN WALK WAY. 47

THE SKIN OF THE STRUCTURE WAS INSPIRED BY THE LIGHTING EFFECT THAT A CANOPY OF LEAVES IN THE FOREST CREATE THROUGH REFLECTION AND REFRACTION. I WAS ALSO INSPIRED TO CREATE A BUILDING THAT BRIDGED THE VERY NOTICEABLE DISCONNECT BETWEEN THE NATURAL LANDSCAPE, COASTAL LANDSCAPE AND THE BUILT.

OBJECTIVE: THIS COURSE INTRODUCES A SITE WITH URBAN CONTEXT AND INTRODUCES URBAN DESIGN AND SITE PLANING IN REGARDS TO CIRCULATION OF VARIOUS MODES OF TRAVEL SUCH AS PEDESTRIAN AND VEHICULAR AND OTHER VARIOUS MODES OF PUBLIC TRANSIT SUCH AS TROLLEY SYSTEMS, BUSES, OR HIGH SPEED RAIL SYSTEMS.

THIS PROJECT WAS TO DESIGN A MUTI-MODAL TRANSIT AREA WITH A RETAIL SHOP, CAR AND BIKE RENTAL SHOPS, FOOD COURT, AND A MID-RISE OFFICE TOWER. THE SITE IS LOCATED NEAR THE NORTH WEST CORNER OF THE FORTH WARD IN DOWNTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC. THE AREA HAS TO BE ABLE TO SUPPORT A HIGH SPEED TRAIN, PUBLIC BUS LINE, AND A PUBLIC TROLLEY SYSTEM THROUGH THE SITE.

I THEN CHOSE A GRASSHOPPER DEFINITION FROM ONLINE AND DID A STUDY ON IT AND LEARNED THE “DEFINITION” ON GRASSHOPPER AND LATER TAUGHT IT TO THE CLASS.
