From the Publisher... New Year Wishes… The beginning of a new year is typically a time to make resolutions. I quit doing that a long time ago. I also stopped staying up until midnight to see the new year. I mean, it is just another day, week, month, year. And I’m old, and it’s past my bedtime! LOL Everyone should strive to keep resolutions all year, such as being nice to others, resolving to help someone in need, or praying for those who are less fortunate or in ill health. Whatever the new year has in store for you, resolve to make it better. Even small things can make a difference. Think about volunteering for a non-profit. What is your interest? What would you want to do to help someone else? Here are a few suggestions: Volunteer to foster a pet in need. Our shelters and rescues are overflowing with unwanted animals — and they will be inundated with pets after Christmas with the animals given to someone who didn’t want one. Fostering is a great way to assist! And the rescue pays your expenses! Choose a non-profit and set aside an hour a week to help. That may be in person, such as being a sidewalker for Runnin’ WJ Ranch or helping on social media with another non-profit. What is your interest? Call a non-profit and ask how you can help, even from home. Visit a nursing/retirement home. You can read, sing, or visit with someone. So many would love to have company once a week just to have someone there. Whatever you choose, you will make someone’s life better in the coming year. Lora Davis first became interested in aviation management on a family vacation while taking a helicopter tour of Branson, Missouri. “From that point, my interest in aviation grew into something I wanted to turn into a career. I started taking flying lessons at Texarkana Airport, where I learned how to fly and made some incredible friends along the way who ‘took me under their wing’ and encouraged me to keep pursuing my dreams,” Lora says. “I now study at LeTourneau University, majoring in aviation management with a concentration in homeland security.” Lora is a third-generation pilot in her family, and learning to fly brings Lora closer to her dad and grandfather. “We have been able to bond over our shared passion for aviation, and some of my best memories are flying with my dad,” Lora says. “I also really enjoy talking to other pilots and learning from them. I enjoy all the adventures from pursuing an aviation career and look forward to the ones yet to come.” Though Lora has some accomplishments to be proud of, like a private pilot’s certificate and a Girl Scout Gold Award, she feels most of her professional achievements will be met in the following chapters of her life. Her

plan after graduation is to get a job in aviation management. She would love to work at an airport and be involved in daily operations.

“With my background in Homeland Security, I have a special interest in the safety and security aspect of airport management,” Lora says. “I am currently working on making this dream a reality by finishing my degree. I hope that one day I can give back to the community that believed in me and gave me a chance as a 14-year-old girl to pursue my dreams.”

Lora knows her family, friends, and faith are there for her on the most challenging days. She always has someone to call or look to when motivation is hard to find. “I get so inspired by seeing my friends’ success as well,” Lora says. “Keeping an end goal for my life in mind also drives me to work hard,” Lora says. “I want a life full of adventure, good memories, good friends, and amazing experiences. If I have all that, I will consider myself pretty successful.”

Lora has been supported in pursuing her dreams by her parents, Josh and Mandy Davis. “I have been extremely blessed to have a wonderful family. There are not enough words to describe how grateful I am to have two parents who have shown me the most support and unconditional love in the way that they have,” Lora says. “I have also been blessed with amazing grandparents who have always encouraged and believed in me. I would not be who I am today without the support system that my family has provided me with through all these years.” Another source of inspiration for her future dreams is Lora’s faith. “I am a firm believer in

No matter where the future takes her, Lora wants to be remembered as someone who always worked hard, both professionally and personally. On top of meeting her own goals and accomplishing her dreams, she wants to be remembered as a person who cared about others. “I don’t want to be remembered as perfect,” Lora says. “I have many flaws, but I hope when people think of me, they remember someone who was kind and tried her best to help however she could.”

I am involved in the Texarkana community through many things! I have been involved with William’s Memorial United Methodist church for many years. I have led Bible study groups for the youth group and worship in the contemporary service there throughout high school. I have helped out with a few local campaigns. I volunteered at Harvest Texarkana when I lived in Texarkana full-time. I spend time each year at the elementary school leading Christmas carols with the children. I can’t wait to live full-time in Texarkana again next year! My comfort food is tacos. Most people don’t know that I sing and play guitar. My hype song is “Dreams” by Van Halen. One thing on my bucket list is to travel the world.

Lisa Morgan did not grow up dreaming of being a veterinarian. In fact, the story of how she decided on this career is very unconventional! “In 8th grade, my math teacher went around the room and had us all say what we wanted to do when we ‘grew up.’ I said ‘veterinarian’ because I could not think of something else off the top of my head,” Lisa says. “Since I am a very goal-driven person, becoming a veterinarian became my plan, and I just stuck to it!” Even though it is true that Lisa does love and care for animals, one of the main reasons she loves her job is what she witnesses from the human-pet interactions in the office and exam room. “I really enjoy seeing people’s relationships with their pets and getting to be a part of that relationship,” Lisa says. “Nothing is more fulfilling than getting to care for a pet from puppy/ kittenhood to senior years.”

Lisa’s most significant accomplishments are not necessarily certificates on the wall or trophies in a case; they are the relationships she has built throughout her career. “I try to provide my clients the highest level of care and truly listen to them. By doing so, I have made lifelong relationships,” Lisa says. “Taking care of families and their pets and seeing pets and kids grow up together—that is what makes me happy.” When Lisa is not at work, she spends time with her family and friends. She is married to Shane Morgan, DVM. He is a Liberty Eylau graduate with an extensive animal practice locally and is now a veterinarian with Twin Rivers Vet Supply. “I am inspired daily by my faith, family, friends, and the amazing people I work with,” Lisa says. As far as future professional goals, Lisa wants to keep pushing herself to grow and learn. “I’ve had great mentors over the years, and the number one thing they taught me is never stop learning,” Lisa says. “I hope always to keep learning and providing the best care possible for our patients.”

For Lisa, “success” is not some elusive 10-year goal. Instead, she believes that she has already achieved success through the life she has built today. “Professionally, I have good relationships with my clients, even during the sad times, which are the hardest,” Lisa says. “Personally, it took me a long time to realize that I don’t have to go through life alone. My faith has made me appreciate and love what I have—my family and friends. That is success to me.” When everything is said and done, Lisa hopes that she will be remembered as the kind of person who displays integrity and compassion for everyone around her. “I hope people say I was always true to my word,” Lisa says. “I hope they remember that I was a caring person who worked daily to provide for those around me: professionally, in the community, and my family.”

I am involved in the Texarkana community through the Lone Star Aggie Moms Club and different TISD volunteer activities. My comfort food is pizza. Most people don’t know that I was a scorekeeper for the Texas A&M Men’s tennis team (30-Loves) in college at Texas A&M University. My hype song is “I Won’t Back Down” by Tom Petty. One thing on my bucket list is to learn how to play piano. Why did my mom let me quit taking lessons when I was a kid!?!?

Kristen Schultz started her law enforcement career in the corrections department at Miller County Detention Center in 2016. Then, she became a patrol officer for the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department in September of 2021. In October 2023, she moved into her current position as the Public Information Officer and Community Outreach Coordinator. “Being the Public Information Officer and Community Outreach Coordinator is a very fulfilling position,” Kristen says. “I am able to see the positive in the community and be involved with the community in fun and exciting ways.” Kristen says she measures her success in positivity and the number of smiles she can bring to people’s faces daily, and she has been able to accomplish that with her involvement in TAPD’s two most significant Christmas Events: Shop with a Cop and Cops and Kids. “Shop with a Cop is an opportunity for officers and the fire department to take kids Christmas shopping at Walmart.

Kids who normally wouldn’t have an amazing Christmas are selected,” Kristen says. “Cops and Kids is an event where we partner with Watersprings Ranch and Texarkana Baptist Orphanage to provide them with a wonderful Christmas experience. Working with the kids during Christmas time and building the relationship between the community and the police department is an honor.” Kristen hopes to strengthen the relationships between the community and the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department by changing some of the negative perceptions some may have about policing. “I hope I can help provide a more unified bond between the community and law enforcement,” Kristen says. “Even just changing

one person’s thinking on policing will be an accomplishment.” Each day, Kristen is inspired to “be the difference,” a quote she strives to live by. She is also inspired by her friends, community, TAPD peers, and family. Kristen is the daughter of Richard Schultz and Joyce Schultz. She has an older sister named Kelly Hodge and a younger brother named Cole Schultz. “I am also blessed to have three beautiful nieces named Grace, Everleigh, and Taylor,” Kristen says. “Each individual inspires me to be the very best daily.”

I am involved in the Texarkana community through community outreach programs, being a certified police officer, and being a positive role model for youth. My comfort food is sloppy joes. Most people don’t know that I am obsessed with penguins. My hype song is “Count on Me” by Bruno Mars. One thing on my bucket list is to go to the Galapagos Islands to see the penguins.

Donnie Spriggs has been in the restaurant business since he was only 16 when he started working at Texas Roadhouse. Eventually, he became an hourly manager at Silver Star Smokehouse. In the course of his eight years there, he worked his way up to General Manager and then Regional Manager before making his departure. Now, Donnie is with the Lost Pizza Company as the Director of Food and Beverage. “Over the last several years, I have learned so much. My biggest accomplishment, however, was successfully navigating Silver Star Smokehouse Texarkana through COVID-19. While we can all agree that those times were very trying, it was incredibly difficult for all in the hospitality industry,” Donnie says. “Thinking outside the box, getting creative, and having a great support system helped us succeed. I am very grateful for the relationships I created during those times.” Initially, when Donnie left Silver Star Smokehouse, he took a marketing position with CHRISTUS St. Michaels, but he quickly realized his place was

not behind a desk. “I was used to being up and moving and talking to so many different people that I began to miss it,” Donnie says. “One night at dinner with a good friend, Jenny, the owner of Lost Pizza in Texarkana, she asked if I would be interested in helping her and her husband, Patrick, expand and open more Lost Pizza locations. I felt this was a new opportunity I could thrive in and truly enjoy. I accepted the offer, and it has been an amazing journey thus far.” Donnie’s work in the hospitality industry requires him to spend much time with young people, and though he knows that the up-and-coming generation may not always have the best reputation, he is inspired when he can help them get on the right track. “Some do not have that guidance at home, so when they enter the workforce, I try to give them the tools they will need,” Donnie says. “Being able to be that person for many young adults keeps fire under my feet along with theirs.” Donnie’s current professional goals always come back to his employees. He strives to make any workplace fun and safe while offering personal

support to anyone who needs it. “An open door policy is important to employees and businesses. I am passionate about creating successful businesses and people,” Donnie says. “In turn, it makes it possible for us to provide better service and food quality.” When Donnie is not working, he spends much of his time with his dog, Dolly, his parents, and brother, and volunteering in the Texarkana community. He is involved with Friends for a Cause, Randy Sam’s Outreach Shelter, United Way, Four States Fair Grounds, and Temple Memorial Pediatric Center. Thinking ahead to the next goal, Donnie has learned that he measures success one day at a time. “It took me several years after high school to get my bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M UniversityTexarkana. I learned over the years that if I don’t focus on the ‘now,’ I won’t have the energy to focus on the ‘when,’” Donnie says. “So that’s what I did, and I successfully graduated with a degree, all while working more than 60 hours a week. That is a success for me. You have to determine priorities in your life and rank them accordingly.”

My comfort food is my mother’s beef tips and rice or her pinto beans with cornbread. I have tried making them at home, but they never seem the same. Maybe it is the “mother’s touch.” I want to be remembered for understanding the moment. The reason things happen most of the time is because nobody listens or is understanding of the moment. Sometimes, words can’t play out what’s going on in someone’s head. So, I try my very best to listen and be understanding. Most people don’t know I’m an open book with most things. I am very involved in the community with nonprofit organizations and with the political aspect of things. I am not sure I have a “hype song,” but let me just tell you... If Reba McEntire comes on and it’s her song “Fancy,” know that “I might have been born just plain white trash, but Fancy was my NAME!” One thing on my bucket list is to see Greece, drink wine on the beach, and see the country from a local’s perspective. Ashlyn is a Texas A&M University- Texarkana senior student majoring in Business Administration. She chose this avenue because of the diverse career opportunities that are available. “I am excited about the future and the possibilities that await,” Ashlyn says. “My biggest accomplishments in college have been maintaining my place on the President’s Honor Roll and being selected as the Outstanding Student of the Year for General Business last April. I felt so honored and grateful to receive this recognition.” Ashlyn and her parents, Eric and Holly Winters, moved seventeen years ago to Texarkana from Greenwood, Mississippi. She credits their encouragement as the reason why she has felt so empowered to follow her dreams. “My parents have been my biggest supporters while going through college and getting my pilot’s license,” Ashlyn says. “When I considered quitting, my parents stood by my side every step of the way, encouraging me to get it done. I could not have accomplished any of this without the love and support I have from them.” After she graduates college in May, Ashlyn plans to advance to a full-time position at TSD because the work correlates to her program of study, and she really enjoys the part-time work she is doing there as a fuel clerk for the Open Roads Program. In the last year and a half, Ashlyn has been impressed with the supportive culture at TSD Logistics. “I really enjoy the people I work with and my customer interactions. I have met so many interesting people in this field,” Ashlyn says. “My supervisors have been very understanding and accommodating with my college schedule and through getting my pilot’s license. Having a big support system at work makes the job run more smoothly and enjoyable. I feel very valued by supervisors and the company as a whole.” Even though Ashlyn’s resume is already impressive, she expands on these accomplishments with the fact that she is also a certified private pilot. After graduating high school in 2021, she completed a discovery flight with the Texarkana Flying Club. “I chose not to pursue flying at that time because I had just graduated high school and wanted to keep my focus on college,” Ashlyn says. However, by October 2022, Ashlyn was more comfortable with her college routine and felt stable in her employment, but she had no hobbies.

“I remembered how much I enjoyed the discovery flight and decided that this was a good time to go for it,” Ashlyn says. “The biggest obstacle I have faced during this was learning to trust myself. Learning the maneuvers and navigation on crosscountry flights was easy when my instructor was beside me. However, when it was time for me to start doing it alone, I had never felt so much apprehension.” Ashlyn realized that up until that moment, she had always had someone to rely on—her parents, instructor, and friends. However, in the air, she was the only person to rely on. “This was the scariest and most challenging thing that I have had yet to experience,” Ashlyn says. “It took a while for me to get over this fear. The more I started soloing, the more I slowly started to feel comfortable with myself, and at this point, I started to enjoy flying.” Throughout the process of obtaining her pilot’s license, Ashlyn has learned that the old adage is true: she can accomplish anything she sets her mind to. “When I was growing up, I heard that repeatedly, but I never really understood that until now,” Ashlyn says. “During the process of training and studying towards my license, there were a few times that I seriously considered giving up. There were countless excuses that I wanted to make for myself not to get this done because I wanted to take the easy way out. There were times that I felt like I was just a kid and that there was no way I could accomplish anything this big on my own.” However, with the support of family, friends, her instructor, and peers in the Texarkana Flying Club, Ashlyn grew in confidence and began to trust in herself. “I realized that if all of these people before me could do this, then I had no excuse to quit,” Ashlyn says. “It took me finally passing my check ride and holding my license in my hands to prove to myself that I can accomplish anything I want. Now, when I find myself in a situation where I feel stuck, I always tell myself that I have come this far, so I might as well keep going.” Throughout her journey, Ashlyn met new, life-long friends. She says that the Texarkana Flying Club is a very tight-knit group of people who have always supported her. “I would like to credit my instructor, Dr. Chris Bookout, who taught me to

be a safe pilot while fitting in some room for fun. He taught me to enjoy flying while also respecting it and knowing what to do if I ever find myself in an emergency,” Ashlyn says. “I would also like to thank Zach Dozier and Justin Lee, who encouraged me every step of the way and never hesitated to step in and help me with any issues or doubts I faced. I have met so many amazing people and made unforgettable memories throughout this that I would have never had the opportunity to if I had never taken this chance.” Ashlyn says she feels the most like herself when she is in the air. “I was going through a really rough patch when I got into flying, and I found myself again by doing it,” Ashlyn says. “I have learned so much about myself through this experience. I have learned how to make something for myself, the importance of making new friends, and most importantly, how to believe in myself.” Though she often gets asked about her commercial pilot’s license, Ashlyn has no desire to turn her love of flying into a career. “Flying was only ever meant to be a hobby. I realize that if I ever pursued this as a career and did it every day, I wouldn’t have the appreciation for it as I do now, and that would be a shame,” Ashlyn says. “Being up in the sky exploring the world underneath me gave me a completely new experience of living and independence. In my opinion, the most special thing about flying is seeing everything happening in the world underneath me. It is surreal to see everyone living their own lives simultaneously from above.” As she begins working on her following goals, Ashlyn says she will measure her success through her own growth. “I try not to compare myself to others because we all live different lives and circumstances. Instead, I strive to improve myself every day from who I was the day before,” Ashlyn says. “With that being said, it is easy to set expectations for yourself that are too high. This is something that I am working on. By setting realistic standards, I have been able to be patient with myself and take my time with things. I often need to remind myself that I am only twenty years old and have the rest of my life ahead of me. Life is a gift, and I want to look back and know that I lived it the best I could have with few regrets.”

I am involved in the Texarkana community through volunteering at Cowhorn Assisted Living Estates. I go in the evening after work every other Thursday and sit with the residents while they have their dinner, and then, I call bingo for them. I enjoy this time and have enjoyed getting to know the residents. I am extremely grateful for the relationships I have developed with some residents within the past year. My comfort food is anything my beautiful mother makes because I know she is reading this! Most people do not know that I am terrified of heights! My hype song is anything by Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Meltdown, and Fleetwood Mac. One thing on my bucket list is to perform in an airshow. A LT M a g a z i n e | J a n u a r y 2 0 2 4

Kohlson and Araylia met at a church function when they were just 16. He is from Louisiana, and she is a Texas girl. Even though Kohlson’s aunt was purposely trying to unite the two teenagers, a tiny spark developed naturally as their paths kept crossing. The two spent their first date seeing Araylia’s favorite places in Texarkana. She wanted to show him around the town she knew well, so they spent the entire date talking, getting to know each other, and enjoying many Texarkana spots. They ended the evening at Raising Canes. After their first date, they each told their parents that this would be their forever! Despite the distance between them, they slowly fell in love. Kohlson would playfully ask Araylia to marry him every week, but she never expected a proposal. Araylia’s family came to stay with Kohlson and his family in January 2023. Araylia noted that Kohlson was acting differently, but she was unsure why. While there for the visit, Kohlson took Araylia to his uncle’s house to spot some deer. As they walked into the woods, and it kept getting darker, Kohlson stopped to plug in a light so Araylia “could see the deer.” As Kohlson plugged in the light, the entire wooded area lit up and looked magical. Kohlson then proposed that January 14th night and the two were welcomed back with a surprise party! Kohlson began building their new home, and the two began to plan their perfect July 8th wedding date.

Josh and Randi met in 2021. Randi worked at a barbershop in Texarkana, and Josh visited her place of employment one morning, wondering if a barber was available. “We noticed each other immediately, but I could not take him as a client. He came back several times after that, and after a while, we eventually spoke to each other and continued to stay in contact for a few weeks before going on our first date. We knew almost immediately that we were about to completely change each other’s lives,” Randi says. Josh and Randi would spend the next few weeks getting to know each other at every available opportunity. To them, there never seemed to be enough time to spend with each other. Whether the couple met at the bookstore to talk or for lunch, they began to notice each other’s interests as they spoke of their love for Marvel movies, going to Comic Con, their mutual love for books, and everything in between. They quickly learned that their connection and relationship with each other was effortless. Later that year, in November, the two welcomed their beautiful daughter into the world. Randi says, “She is an amazing little girl and is the best of both of us. Josh and I have always been a team, which has also helped make every transition we have had as easy as breathing.” Equally excited as the parents, her two big sisters were happy to enter this new chapter of Josh and Randi’s lives. In a magical expression of love, Josh took Randi to Verona’s Restaurant on March 18th for an unforgettable date night. At dinner, Josh gifted Randi the book Dracula, and as she opened it, the hallowed-out pages displayed an engagement ring inside. Josh then got on one knee and asked Randi to marry him.

Olivia and Caleb’s love story began in their college days. They were best friends and took care of each other. Olivia always offered Caleb emotional support, and Caleb always provided Olivia with home-cooked meals. Their friends would say that Caleb liked Olivia, but even to this day, Caleb is unwilling to admit that he did. However, Olivia only considered Caleb to be a best friend. Soon, the two would graduate college and not see much of each other. As the pandemic hit the country in 2020, Olivia and Caleb would be reunited. “We started hanging out again, and at one hangout, my best friends told me that I should ‘reconsider’ Caleb,” Olivia says. Caleb got COVID, then Olivia got COVID, and Caleb came to care for her during her sickness. Through this experience, Olivia saw how Caleb cared for her and how she cared for him. It was then that Olivia decided to reconsider her thoughts about Caleb. On their first anniversary, Caleb made Olivia’s dreams come true by proposing to her among the elephants (Olivia’s favorite animal) at the Hill Country Elephant Preserve in Austin, Texas. “We both agreed that taking a chance on each other was our best decision. There is nothing like falling in love with your best friend,” Olivia says.

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LONGTERM CARE AND LONG-TERM DISABILITY RETIREMENT & LONGEVITY

A person turning 65 today has a nearly 70% chance of needing some type of long-term care in their retirement years. If you’re among the 15 million people who will turn 65 by 2024, it’s imperative to understand the different ways to preserve your assets and retirement income and protect your loved ones. Yet more than half of respondents to a recent survey conducted by Nationwide Retirement Institute® and LIMRA confused long-term care (LTC) and long-term disability (LTD) insurance. It’s not hard to understand why. Both are protections from financial consequences of illness or injury, but LTC and LTD insurance serve two distinct purposes.

These differences are outlined below: Long-term care insurance Long-term care encompasses a range of support and services that aren’t covered by health insurance – specifically, for help with activities of daily living (ADLs). These can include: • Bathing • Dressing • Eating • Transferring (i.e., getting out of a bed or chair) • Toileting LTC insurance helps you cover the cost of this care whether you receive it in your home, an assisted living facility, a nursing home, or an adult day care center. It may be needed at any age, but it often isn’t considered until later in life. Under most policies, people are eligible for LTC

benefits when they are unable to manage two ADLs on their own. Among people surveyed, 29% confused LTC insurance with traditional health insurance. Health insurance does not cover long-term care. Neither does Medicare, unless you are also receiving skilled services or rehabilitative care. Medicare does not pay for non-skilled aid with ADLs, which make up the majority of long-term care services. The costs associated with long-term care can drain your retirement savings quickly: According to Genworth’s 2022 Cost of Care Survey, the median annual cost of a semiprivate nursing home room is $94,900. An LTC policy can assist with these costs by reimbursing you a daily or monthly amount up to a preselected limit. Long-term care generally takes place in three settings: at home, in a residential facility, or out in the community. It can comprise everything from light housekeeping to around-the-clock nursing care – all of which have associated costs that can alter your financial outlook over time. A long-term care plan enables you to make your own decisions while you still can and better enjoy your retirement and quality of life and take the burden off your family’s shoulders. with your financial advisor to develop a strategy for funding long-term care can help prevent a costly scenario from depleting your retirement income.

Now that you know the difference between LTC and LTD insurance, talk to your advisor about whether one – or both – is right for you.

Long-term disability

An LTD policy can help you continue to financially support yourself and your family without depleting your savings, and maintain a higher standard of living than you could by relying solely on government assistance. However, most employer-sponsored policies are structured to replace only about 60% of your income. Personal LTD coverage can replace the remaining 40% of your gross monthly income that’s not covered by employers.

Our Town Texarkana is blessed with numerous community events in December, including the annual Mistletoe Fair and TRAC’s Holiday Arts and Crafts Show. The Nutcracker at the historic Perot Theater gives talented students from local dance studios a chance to perform in a professional production. Until last year, when I attended their first Christmas recital, I was unaware of a choir program for local homeschooled students. The small group of twelve talented singers amazed me with the sound of a twenty-five-voiced choir. ACE - Alliance of Christian Educators is a choir initiative that was begun to give homeschool students an opportunity for a choir program. This year, they presented a Royal Madrigal Feast to a sold-out audience, including Diane Tyler and myself. Royal announcers, Lord Todd Reed and Lord Johnathan Reed, announced each Lord and Lady guest arriving. However, I received the title Queen of Bling Sue, and Diane was announced as Princess Diana. I’ve been telling you I have royal blood in my veins. Twenty-two students in grades nine to twelve and seven elementary children entertained us with music, drama, and humor in true Royal madrigal style, complete with magnificent Renaissance costumes and a stockade. The students performed songs in English, Latin, and Italian. At one point, the Royal Junior Choir challenged the audience to sing along in a round. (Brought back memories of Row, Row, Row your boat). The guests made a brave attempt at the Latin words. The Wandering Minstrels, with a talented guitarist, kept us entertained as they walked around the guests’ tables, singing Christmas Carols. This was a unique experience for these students to be a part of a production pulled together with Queen Debbie Reed dressed in a long gown with a flowing train of brocade material and a ruby and diamond studded crown. (If her crown comes up missing, don’t check my house). Debbie wrote the script and music. She also produced and directed the show and made all the costumes.

Not Old Just Challenged The other day, I decided to hedge my bet on not drowning while chasing the wily trout in creeks and rivers by purchasing a “fly fishing life vest”. Since I was forced to stop tournament fishing for bass, I have returned to my roots and picked up fly fishing again. I love to wade fish for rainbows, Browns, Brookies, and Dolly’s, but I am always in moving water - sometimes it’s slow, and sometimes fast. I have slipped and fallen several times, causing my waders to fill with different amounts of water. Every time it happens, I am reminded that it’s possible that I could drown. Thankfully, I am still pretty agile for a 65-year-old and have managed to get out of the situation or at least not make it worse. So I bought a life jacket made for wade fishing. I have not used it yet, but having it makes me feel better, and I will wear it whenever I go into the water. I never had a problem wearing a lifejacket bass fishing when the big motor was running, and this jacket will be pretty spiffy. You can’t tell it’s a life jacket because it is not bulky. It looks like a fly fishing vest and has plenty of pockets.
