DEBBIE BROWER

Frisky. She probably weighed around 8 pounds and should have weighed about 6. She was more feisty than she was frisky, but the name fit. I was 7 years old when we got Frisky, a black and tan Chihuahua. Although she was supposed to be the family pet, she was in all actuality mine and my brother Johnny’s dog. We loved that dog! Chihuahuas have a reputation for being possessive of their owners, and she was no exception. It didn’t help that we made her mean by making her attack my sister – something she did more than once and led to her lifelong dislike of dogs of any sort until the past few years. In our minds, she deserved it. She was sweet to us and loved to play. Johnny and I would put blankets and pillows on the floor in my bedroom, between the twin beds, and that would be her fort. We spent hours running around her while her little legs would try to keep up – sometimes catching us – guarding her fort. We would play chase through the house and she loved it. One particular home had hardwood floors, and as we ran through the house, we would dash into our parents’ room. We had no problem rounding the corner, but inevitably she would slide into the wall or dresser trying to catch us. She never gave up though! She was my best friend growing up. My love of animals has continued throughout my life, as many of you know. I have lots of love surrounding me by my fur babies and those that live in my house temporarily while we search for the perfect home for them. Although it is hard to say goodbye to these foster babies, it is more difficult for me to see them homeless. Every pet deserves to have a loving home. Two and a half years ago, I met a group of women who were as passionate about animals as I am. The journey began to help as many as we could. Starting as Texarkana Friends of the Shelter, and this year changing our name due to confusion in the public, Partners for Paws Texarkana is an organization that is comprised of women of all ages, economic status, and professions. These women have hearts full of compassion for animals – hearts that are broken regularly by people who don’t seem to understand what it is to have a pet. Hearts that see so many horrific things when we foster pets that are broken, literally and figuratively. From broken bones, to heartworms, to leeches, to psychological scars, we are there to help mend these babies. We have chosen this path. These are my friends, my partners, my support group. I hope you enjoy reading our story this month. It tells a lot about what our organization does and plans to do. It tells you about the women who spend countless hours each month helping. And I hope after you read it, you will open your heart, visit our website, www.pawstexarkana.org, and donate or help us by sponsoring the upcoming Fur Ball. God bless you and your family.

Partners for Paws Lends a Hand to Help Furry Friends in Need By Brittny Ray Crowell

Each year, thousands of animals suffer from the effects of abuse, neglect, and abandonment. At times, owners are well meaning, but find themselves without the resources to properly care for their pets. The results are often devastating and heartbreaking, with many animals succumbing to their injuries. Fortunately, Partners for Paws (formerly known as Texarkana Friends of the Shelter) have taken on the task of advocating and fundraising for animals and owners in need. Through their dedication, countless pets have gone on to live happy and healthy lives in loving and supportive homes.

ALT-Mag.com | February 2017 015

Board member, Deanna Honea was once notified by a friend about six puppies abandoned after their owner died. They were completely covered in fleas and the rescue ended up taking several trips to retrieve them all. One of the dogs was also found to be deaf. Nevertheless, the organization funded 100% of the vetting for each of the dogs, including heart worm and other preventative treatments, as well as fees for boarding. She eventually sent pictures of the pups to rescue groups out of Dallas and San Antonio that train search and rescue and service animals. Each of the dogs are now making a difference in the lives of those in need today thanks to Deanna and the other caring members of Partners for Paws. Recently, Heather Spanhanks posted a heartfelt cheers for the organization for their help in aiding a small puppy she found abandoned in the trash. “We thought she was just cold and malnourished. Little did we know she had broken bones. She cried all night.

I knew something had to be wrong,” she wrote. Yet, the organization made it possible for the puppy to be cared for by Dr. Randall Murray at Westridge Animal Hospital. In line with the Christmas spirit, the puppy received red and green colored splints and was sent on her way to recover in her “fur-ever home” with Heather and her family. Norma Oats and her rescue dog, Lollipop, are another prime example of the many instances Partners for Paws has come to the aid of a pet family need. Lollipop was desperately in need of a life saving surgery, yet Norma was told she would have to pay $500 up front before vets could perform surgery on the rescue Yorkie. “She was nearly septic,” Norma says. “I didn’t have the money to get her spayed.” Yet, Partners for Paws stepped in to ensure that Lollipop would be able to receive the procedure that she needed. Lollipop just recently went for a checkup where she was given a clean bill of health.

“Partners for Paws basically helped me save her life,” Norma says. “I thank them from the bottom of my heart.” J.D. and Mark White operate The Kitties Pad Rescue, a nonprofit organization that rescues and nurtures cats with medical conditions from area shelters. Thanks to generous donations from Partners for Paws, the Whites are able to ensure that the rescued cats they serve are able to be spayed, neutered, and micro-chipped prior to being placed in loving and caring homes. The rescue even helps to provide the elderly with furry friends to love and cherish, an experience studies show greatly improves senior’s mental health and overall quality of life. J.D recalls one particular instance during “kitten season” in which one cat alone had given birth to six kittens. Like many volunteer pet rescue organizations that depend on contributions from the community, the sudden influx of new animals

exponentially increases the program’s expenses. “I remember thinking how am I going to pay for all this,” JD says. “We would have been out of a lot of money, but Partners for Paws helped with their medical expenses. They continue to allow us to be able to help more kitties get out of the shelter.” From the moment Mindy Jo ArdwinNewberg received word that Ozzie and Leah were in need of homes, she couldn’t resist going out her way to help them. Yet, after adopting Ozzie, after he was surrendered to the shelter by his previous owner, and intercepting to save Leah just before she was abandoned, Mindy was dismayed to find out that the two were gravely sick and positive for heartworms. “They’re my pride and joy,” she says. “It was [heartbreaking] to find out they were dying.” Neither of the dogs had ever had any vaccines prior to being in Mindy’s care. Worse still, Leah had also been traumatized by abuse. Both Ozzie and Leah are Alaskan Malamutes, a large breed of dogs often confused with the significantly smaller Siberian Husky. Weighing in at over 100 lbs each, Mindy knew that the heartworm treatments they needed would be expensive as the dose of injections are dictated by the dog’s weight. As the owner of a local horse rescue, Mindy was not in the position to pay the $1000 for their treatments. Yet, the ladies of Partners for Paws came in to save the day once again. Since then, Ozzie has been progressing well, though Leah still isn’t 100%. Nevertheless, Mindy maintains that she never would have had a chance to try to save them had it not been for the organization. “They saved my big babies lives.” Partners for Paws has also been particularly instrumental in helping to revitalize and fund the efforts of the local animal shelter as well. Charles Lokey, Director of the Texarkana, AR Animal Care and Adoption Center (ACAC) praises the organization for

donating towards the fees associated with sponsoring animals so they can be adopted out. “A lot of people want to adopt a pet, but they can’t afford to with all the costs of getting shots, medicine, vaccines, [and getting the animals] spayed or neutered,” he says. “Their contributions are greatly appreciated.” He also credits the organization for bringing about more awareness regarding the shelter. “ [Some people] used to have a negative view of it. [They] helped us turn it around from the ground up.” Bertha Curry, Assistant director of the ACAC, estimates that donations from Partners for Paws helps sponsor approximately fifteen animals per month. “Without them, it would be much harder to get the animals into loving homes,” she says. “They’re just a bunch of wonderful people.” The organization has also provided the shelter staff with new t-shirts and uniforms, in addition to replacing kennel doors and remodeling the cat room of the adoption floor. They have also previously sponsored Curry on the cable access show “Heart to Heart” where she brings in animals in an effort to get pets adopted or to gain awareness for any of the shelter’s needs. “They’ve done so much for us.” The organization holds several events throughout the year to benefit animals in the community, including their annual Fur Ball, which will be held April 1st, downtown at Silvermoon on Broad, beginning at 6:30. The event will feature a silent auction, games and live music from the Vintage 15 Band out of Austin, TX. For more information on the 3rd annual Fur Ball or how you can help Partners for Paws, visit www. pawstexarkana.org.

The Women of Partners for Paws

Since 2014, Partners for Paws has been dedicated to the mission of animal rescue in the Texarkana community and the surrounding area. We asked each of the organization’s thirteen board members to reveal what makes their work together so rewarding:

Debbie Brower–President; Founder Member since 2015 Always being a person who loves animals helped me to evolve into helping those who can not help themselves. I helped start this organization because there was a need in our community to help financially when others can’t. Through our efforts, we have saved hundreds of lives and helped countless pets find homes. I absolutely love these women and feel like they are not only my friends, but my family. I enjoy helping animals. All of my dogs were strays or rescued and I know not every dog gets a home like them.

Helping animals in need has brought me many rewards. I feel tremendous gratitude to all of the people in our community who help us try to meet our goals. Seeing the community come out to support our events lets me know that there really are a lot of kind people in our area. The actual work of fundraising, transporting, and fostering is heart warming. I receive great joy and love from all of pets we have helped, plus I have met many wonderful people. Best of all, I love working with our group of ladies who have become my friends for life. 018 ALT Magazine | February 2017

I joined the group because I had worked with some of the members and known them for years. I knew this was a group of ladies who loved animals, worked as a closely knit group and had a “get it done” mindset. I was honored to join...I love these ladies and have great pride in what we are doing for animals in need. There is much more to come.

The day this group of women entered my life, I gained an amazing support system. They are all selfless and work tirelessly in many different ways to help local animals in need. I am honored and proud to be a part of them and to call them all friends.

I have always loved animals, cats, and dogs especially. Being able to help our local needy pets is as much of a blessing to me, as it is to them. Being a part of something bigger than me and working with this amazing group of women is something I will cherish for a lifetime. Personally, I love knowing that I can help, even in the smallest way, to improve the life of an innocent animal who does not have its own voice to ask for help.

The most rewarding part of being with this group is knowing that we have saved a pet by helping get it vetted and into a “forever” home. Another perk has been the wonderful friends I now have from working with these women who share my passion for “furbabies”.

I became a member of Partners for Paws Texarkana because I wanted to be a part of a group of like-minded, hard-working people with one common goal, to make lives better for animals in our area.

Partners for Paws is a great group of women with a selfless goal to help animals and people that need help [caring for them]. I love being able to help the community so much. 020 ALT Magazine | February 2017

Working with this group is truly a blessing to me personally, as well as to our community and animals in the community. It is a unique group in the fact that we have all sorts of personalities and backgrounds of members, but we are very loyal to each other and remain true to our cause of helping local animals and putting them first. Our group is truly a family, and every single person pulls their weight and has something to offer. I can’t imagine what life would be like without having this wonderful group of women, who are very supportive of each other, in my life. It’s so nice to know that if I’m in need of anything, animal cause or not, I could send a message to our group and have multiple offers for help instantly. We are [always] able to work through it [all] and figure out a solution peacefully and with love. We are here to support each other and make the world better for as many animals as we can....All of us [have] volunteer’s hearts, [and] we make each other want to do even more.

This organization allows me to help animals in this community in a more impactful way than I ever thought possible. Changing the lives of these animals is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever been a part of.

It brings me great pleasure to see a “thrown out,” living, breathing animal become a family member and have love, a home, food, [and] medical care that EVERY living breathing animal deserves. This group does everything in its power to see that that happens.

I am passionate about helping animals in need and Partners for Paws Texarkana gives me the opportunity to help many animals throughout our area. The women in this group are wonderful friends that I plan to have for a lifetime.

It is so special to me not only because my future husband gave it to me, but also because the center diamond was passed down to me from my greatgrandmother. Shortly after our engagement, family diamonds were passed down from my mother and grandmother and I knew that I wanted custom bands made to create my four generation bridal set. Micah’s Jewelers was fantastic to work with and my bridal set is everything I ever dreamed of. I am so thankful for a stress-free process and all of the great employees at Micah’s Jewelers.”

Baylor & Cami Harris

September 10, 2016

The Love Story Baylor and I met at Liberty-Eylau High School. At the time, I was a freshman and he was a junior. I remember coming home and telling my mom that I met a guy who gave me severe butterflies and who I hoped to marry one day. Growing up, I never thought I would be one of the very few to marry their high school sweetheart. Throughout high school I learned how to love this amazing man more each day. During our relationship we spent a lot of our time adventuring at Wright Patman Lake. On June 6, 2015 we had a date night and he took me to the lake to watch the sunset. As we were reminiscing all of our memories, he stood up to say “we have so many memories here, but it is time for a new one.” At this moment he proceeded to get down on one knee and propose. We began to plan our wedding and then Baylor decided to join the United States Marine Corps. Sadly, I was stuck planning by myself while he was in boot camp. On the bright side, we got married over his 10-day boot leave. I thank God for this man every day and I would not trade him for anything in the world.

Melody Borgeson & Lance Drayton The Love Story

Our friend Leslie Jacobs (she likes to get the credit for this, LOL!) set us up on a blind date. To ensure it wasn’t awkward since we had never met or even talked to each other, her and her husband, Shawn, cooked dinner at their house. We pretty much stayed up all night talking and have been together ever since. He proposed to me on my sister’s birthday (8-26-16). We were having a little get together for her at our house and he got on one knee and asked right before everyone got here. I didn’t want to take away from my sister’s day with my news so we didn’t say anything right then. After they left, Lance announced it on Facebook. Unfortunately, it was so late at night, we hadn’t had a chance to tell our parents (or my sister who just left our house). We were a little bit in trouble over that!!

Dillon & Kate Waters

October 22, 2016

“I’d never been more sure of anything.”

The Love Story Kate and I met in the summer of 2014 through mutual friends on social media. After several weeks of small talk and even more failed attempts of me asking her out, she quit playing “hard to get” and finally agreed to see me. The first night we met was perfect and we were practically inseparable from then on. We spent very little time apart and did everything together. Love was definitely in the air and it was building up quickly between us. It didn’t take long before we both realized that we were serious about our feelings and wanted more. Over the next year, Kate and I spent our time studying and learning each other’s lifestyles, hobbies, faults, and dreams. It is no secret that we are complete opposites. I like to think that I keep her grounded, and she keeps me... well.... on my toes! We balance each other out for sure and I truly believe that our differences bring us closer as a couple. On a random Tuesday in July of 2015, I decided on a proposal and asked Kate to spend the rest of her life with me. She asked, “Are you sure?” at least ten times before she said yes! I’d never been more sure of anything. We took our time and planned the perfect fall wedding to take place in October 2016. Other than all of our friends and family being present, the venue at Ramage Farm was probably the most special part of our big day. Everything was so laid back and Brent Ramage was extremely helpful throughout the entire planning process.

“We are so excited to see our future unravel as a married couple!”

Morgan Patton & Travis “TJ” Martin The Love Story

July 22, 2017

TJ and I met during college at the University of Texas at Tyler. He was a baseball player and I was in a sorority (Delta Gamma!). We first crossed paths in the school parking lot and you might say it was love at first sight – even though TJ likes to recall me nearly running into him with my car, which totally did not happen. After a few Facebook messages that day (yes, we will have to tell our children that is how to came into contact) we began texting and hung out a few weeks later. TJ graduated shortly after we met in Fall of 2013 and moved back to his hometown of Plano, TX. After we “officially” began dating on February 1, 2014, we began living for the weekends doing long distance until I graduated in Fall 2014. After graduation, I myself moved to Dallas to be closer to TJ and began my career. Ever since I was a small child, Walt Disney World has had a special place in my heart because my family took yearly vacations there. Anyone who knows me, knows my love for all things Disney – especially TJ. My company was attending a conference in Orlando in September, and my boss was generous enough to let the marketing team fly out early for a few days to enjoy Orlando and visit Disney World. I was SO excited!! Little did I know, my boss, coworkers, and TJ had already been making plans for the surprise proposal. Friday morning before the conference started, my coworkers & I were getting everything set up and my boss was coordinating a meeting with a Disney executive to talk about future opportunities to work together. He then tells me I needed to sit in on the meeting with him from a marketing perspective (perfect way to keep me occupied all day, right?). So as I’m at work & preparing for the meeting, I’m assuming that TJ is also at work, like he said he was going to be – but he was in fact flying half way across the country to surprise me! Fast forward a little bit, it’s time for the meeting with my boss and this Disney executive. The meeting was to be held at the park so that we could all enjoy Magic Kingdom for the rest of the evening. As we approach the restaurant, Casey’s, my boss keeps saying “make sure you keep an eye out for the guy we’re meeting!” and as we are taking pictures in front of Cinderella’s castle with the Disney photographer (who was also in on it all), he says “Oh I think that’s him right there!” I turned around and my stomach dropped to my ankles to see TJ walking towards me. I immediately began crying and knew that this was the moment I had dreamt of my entire life. After a few sweet words, the love of my life knelt down and asked me the easiest question I’ve ever had to answer, to marry him. I said YES in front of Cinderella’s castle at the happiest place on Earth!! It was a fairytale and I play that moment over and over in my head. We spent that evening and the next two days at the parks enjoying our time together.

“I’t was the perfect proposal.”

Lily & Joseph Bennett The Love Story

The best things in life seem to happen organically. Lily and Joseph met at the fitness center at CHRISTUS and always shared exercise as a common interest. He worked in the Information technology department at the hospital, and she worked at the gym, so they would see each other somewhat regularly. He purposefully would take the on call at that particular site, so he could see her. I had no idea of his interest and went along my daily work routine, until I noticed how frequently he would come in. “She’s smart, educated, and into fitness. She’s such a mystery, I can’t figure her out.” And with that, he took on the challenge. “He’s such a passionate, wildly determined, and loyal person. I’ve never seen anything like it. And for that energy and those traits to be focused on me? Wow, I can’t describe the feeling. Incredible. One of our first outings was with some friends on a whim to a Mavericks game and the whole experience of pulling the chair out from under my seat to the in-depth conversation of worldly music and craft beers, made no room for a dull moment. After then, we both knew that the stars have aligned. The couple loves to travel, go to live concerts, and anything fitness related. They were together for 2 years before Joseph proposed to Lily and started it off with, “You know how boyfriend/ girlfriend never fully describes our feelings towards each other…well (as he takes the ring out of his pocket) how about we change that to husband and wife? With that, they continue their lives together seeking to learn, experience, and grow.

Our Favorite Thing

Both of us were really hands on and wanted to feel apart of everything. Along with Deborah Mason’s wonderful help, we made the backdrop for inside and outside, and a family member made the wooden hexagonal cake accent. We didn’t have a lot of attendees in the first place, so we tried to make it as intimate and detailed as we could. It was an awestricken night for sure. Our wedding was special because we got creative in how we encompassed the Mexican heritage. We had arras involved in the ceremony, Mexican flags draped, Horchata and Agua de Jamaica served, tacos, and a tequila toast. Joseph had his favorite bottle of scotch: Lagavulin

Carla Purifoy & Dustin Cearley

June 10, 2017

The Love Story

Two and a half years ago a mutual friend introduced Dustin and I. We clicked right away. Shortly after dating, Dustin was hospitalized. Seeing him lying in a hospital bed in ICU I knew I would do anything for this man. I knew my heart wouldn't be the same if something happened to him. I knew he was the one I wanted to spend forever with. Dustin recovered and we continued dating. Along the way we became a family, with his daughter and my kids, we were one big happy family. We both love the beach, love fishing, and being outdoors so we took a vacation to Gulf Shores, AL in September of 2016. I had booked a photographer to photograph us on the beach, but I didn't know Dustin had spoken to the photographer and told him he wanted to ask me to marry him. The photographer was taking our pictures when Dustin got on one knee and told me he wanted to spend forever with me and asked me to be his wife! He was crying, I was crying! It was my dream come true! It was one of the happiest moments of my life. Our wedding is June 10, 2017.

The Love Story It was Thanksgiving night, my family and friends always have a big Thanksgiving Celebration, and since Romulo and I have been together we usually split up the night with our families. Well Thanksgiving 2015 was a little different; Thanksgiving would be at my parents’ house that year. My dad built a big shop in our backyard which is where we normally have our family gatherings, and it was decorated so pretty that night, Christmas lights all around the room and candles on each table. It was Thanksgiving and my mom usually goes all out, so the decorations really didn’t give it away. I didn’t think much of it but Romulo’s whole family would also be joining us that Thanksgiving night. Romulo and I had been dating for 3 years so our families had become close. My best friend/maid of honor Katie, her mom and stepdad were there as well which again didn’t seem any weird. After dinner, Katie and Claudia (bridesmaid) kept trying to get me to go to Katie’s house and get her mom’s Camera because she supposedly had forgotten it (if anyone knows Stacy, Katie’s mom, they would know this is totally normal because she always has her camera and is always taking pictures of everyone) so again this didn’t seem weird. So we left and went down the street and got the camera. As soon as we arrived back, I got out of the car and I hear a firecracker go off. I walk into the shop all the lights are turned off and everyone is standing around looking at me holding candles in their hands, our song starts playing and slide show of pictures of Romulo and I start playing on at projector screen, I immediately start crying. After it was over, I turn around and Romulo is down on one knee, and I SAID YES! Then they open the doors to the shop and colorful fireworks start going off and the Bruno Mars song “Marry You” starts playing. It was such an amazing moment.

Our Favorite Thing

“Our favorite part of our wedding was dancing our first dance as husband and wife. We danced to the same song Romulo proposed with and it just meant so much more to both of us.”

Amber & Byron Stewart

December 10, 2016

The Love Story We met in December 2008 when we were introduced by a mutual friend. For our first date, we went to Zapata’s, a local Mexican restaurant which is still our favorite, with a few friends. As always, we had a great time together. Early in 2009, Byron had to leave for work and was gone for several months. We kept in touch while he was gone and had a few more dates when he returned home. We “officially” started dating that summer, and our relationship and love continue to grow to this day. On Christmas Eve 2015, we were scurrying around trying to get everything together to go eat dinner with Byron’s family. We had a few more errands to run before we had to be there for dinner. Byron kept asking me if we had this and that in the car already, which I was certain we did. I was actually already in the car and had it running when he sent me a text message, “come here please.” Confused as to what was going on, I walked into the house to find him standing in front of the Christmas tree, where he got down on his knee and asked me to marry him. It was a sweet and simple proposal, and the happiest moment of my life until we said “I do.”

Our Favorite Thing Our family and friends are very important to us, so being able to spend this day together and with so many people we love made it perfect! Many couples do a “first glance” on their wedding day in order to save time and keep things flowing between the ceremony and reception. It was very important to Byron that he not see me until I walked down the aisle. Seeing his face in front of all those people, made the moment even more special. It also helped that he kept whispering silly things to me during the ceremony when he saw me tearing up, so that I wouldn’t cry. We originally planned to have a destination wedding, but having our grandmothers there was very important to us both, so we are glad we made the choice to have the wedding at home so they could both be there. My Aunt Linda, who helped raise me, passed away in 2008. Her favorite flower was the calla lily, so I knew that I had to have those in the wedding in her honor. Jill did an amazing job incorporating them in our bouquets and arrangements. My nephews are all “too old” to be ring bearers, so instead, Kaiden did our scripture reading (I Corinthians 13), and Michael & Colten handed out programs. They were precious and did a great job! Our honeymoon was a surprise to me. All I knew was that we were going somewhere tropical for 7 nights. I begged him to tell me several days prior, but he wouldn’t give in. On our wedding day, we each had gifts delivered to each other (with the help of some great friends). When we finally spoke on the phone, excited to thank each other for our gifts, he told me we were going to Antigua, where we would be staying in a private hut at the Sandals Grande Antigua resort. It was a wonderful surprise!!! Antigua was a beautiful island, and we enjoyed every day there.

Heather Linn & Harold “Bubba Gonsolus December 23, 2016

The Love Story Bubba and Heather first met on July 22,2016 at LaFogata Bar and Grill, where Heather was playing a show there that evening. Bubba worked with Heather’s Dad, and a group of her dad’s coworkers had come to hear her sing that night. Bubba’s outgoing personality, consistent “spontaneous” appearances at Heather’s shows over the next few months, his sweet smile, crazy green eyes, her daddy’s fondness of him, and his ability to dance really well is what finally swept Heather off her feet. After two months Heather finally said yes to dating Bubba and they have been by each other’s side ever since. In the three short months they’ve been together, they’ve started two businesses (G&G Saddlery and Heather Linn’s Place)and gotten married. They say “when you know, you know”…no reason to move slow. There were two very special parts of the wedding. The bride being a musician, couldn’t allow her special day to happen without writing and singing a song for her new husband, and with the help of some of the best musicians in the area, she made that happen. As the bride was in the process of writing her song, the groom decided he wanted to do something extra special as well. So he handmade their wedding rings! Two beautiful Silver bands made from two pre-1964 silver half dollars. The rings and the song are the perfect representations of the love, hard work, and determination these two have promised to build their marriage upon.

The Love Story Johnny and I met at Gulf World Marine Park in Panama City Beach, FL in August of 2013. He was employed as a SCUBA diver while I was working with the dolphins, sea lions, and penguins. We started dating six months later and in early 2015 relocated to Arlington, TX to follow our career paths.

Johnny proposed to me on December 19, 2015 at the Water Gardens in Fort Worth, TX. The day started off with him taking me to the Fort Worth Zoo. We had an amazing day hanging out with all the animals. After that, we got ready for dinner at Eddie V’s in Fort Worth. On our way to the restaurant, Johnny pulled over and said he wanted to show me the Water Gardens in Fort Worth. When we got there, we walked down into the active pool and he dropped down on one knee and popped the question, and I SAID YES! I have found the one whom my soul loves. Song of Solomon 3:4

The Love Story

My love story starts out as any other day, but it was about to become the best day of my life. I was going out with my best friend to have some fun, and just relax after a hard couple of weeks. I had recently made a very hard decision to break off a previous engagement and move on with my career. We had decided to go dancing and her cousin decided to come along. It was true what they say about there can be love at first sight. As I got to know Shawn, I learned that he had primary custody of his two little girls. I quickly took them under my wing, to love and care for them as if they were my own. We had been dating for about a year and a half, and Shawn, who never was one to want to take part in the tedious act of picture taking, really wanted us to have pictures taken for Easter. Before hand, he had gotten with the photographer and had it all planned where he would get down on one knee with the girls there and propose so that the photographer could get a picture of him proposing. It was a beautiful spring day in March and I couldn’t have been more surprised. The ring was one that I had always dreamed of having. The look on Shawn’s face told me that he truly loved me beyond all reason, and of course I knew from that first meeting that he would be the one I would hope to be with the rest of my life. The wedding date was set for the 1st of October. The time from March until October seemed to be a whirlwind. I have always had the luxury of being the baby girl with older brothers and sisters, so as most little girls, I dreamed of a fairy tale wedding. I not only got my fairy tale wedding, but it was the most wonderful day of my life. The air was brisk, colors were beautiful and it was an outdoor wedding at The Barn at Blue Sky Ranch. The chairs were overlooking the beautiful fall trees with a huge pond and bridge in the background. It is not every day that a girl can say that she had her best friends and family support, her father to walk down the aisle, her brother to perform the wedding vows, and marry the man of my dreams. I still look back at the pictures and know that this little girl has lived the fairy tale and it had such a happy ending. This has been a true love story from start to finish and can’t wait for the next hundred years with my prince charming. Growing up you dream of having all of your family see you walk down the aisle, however, my grandmother was not able to physically make it to my special day. As a memory I gave out handkerchiefs to my soon to be husbands grandmother, mother, and step-mom thanking them for allowing me to take their grandson and son into my life. My family knew how much I wanted my grandmother to be there with me so they had a special hanky made in her memory for me to carry under my dress in her honor. This was a very special moment for me, and I knew that even though she wasn’t physically there, she really was there watching down on me!

Erica & Troy Estrada

August 8, 2015

The Love Story Troy and I met in high school, but it didn’t take long before we realized that we were perfect for each other. Four months after we started dating Troy left for basic training. The next nine months were long and hard, but in the end we only grew stronger. When Troy came home we both knew things were going to change, but neither of us had any idea where life was going to take us. Our proposal wasn’t a “normal” one. One day we were hanging out with friends and we decided to jokingly tell Troy’s best friend, Nick, that we were going to get married. The excitement and overwhelming happiness he had for us when we told him made us really consider marriage. It was then that we made the decision to embark on a new journey. We eloped on August 7, 2014, with one condition. I wanted the wedding every little girl dreams of, so on August 8, 2015 we had our wedding.

Fish Tales with Mike Brower When in Doubt Shallow Out Sometimes we have a problem catching fish where we think they will be and that can become trying to force something that’s not going to happen. I find this time of year when the water temperatures are in the low to mid 40’s and I just can’t catch anything in the deeper water, it pays for me to go shallow. Now, shallow is a relative term so I’m going to qualify what shallow is to me this time of year. Shallow is 5-8 feet in highland reservoirs and 3-5 feet in lowland reservoirs. I firmly believe that there are always some fish shallow and if you can get a bait close they will bite. Fishing shallow this time of year is either a bait low and real slow or a moving bait fished real fast. If the water is murky, say 0-2 foot visibility, low and slow is on the radar. If there is more than 2-3 foot visibility, then we are going fast with a crankbait or a trap. When the fish want something slow, you can’t go slow enough, so I like to fish 2-4 feet either side of a target so I can maximize my time in a possible strike zone. But when fishing a crankbait fast, it is just covering water in likely areas and don’t worry, bass are a lot faster in cold water than we think they are. So next time things are slow, try these two methods out before you get off the water.

December 8th, 2016 Cancer Center at St. Michaels Hospital $500 was donated to 12 different patients.

AFGE 1029 Red River Army Depot Fire Department Members raised $6,000 by selling cancer awareness t-shirts. In the past 5 years, this is the most that has been able to be raised to assist local cancer patients. To differentiate from other organizations who donate money to this cause, AFGE 1029 gave the money directly to patients chosen by a non-biased board created at St. Michaels Cancer Center, based on their treatment and financial struggles.

IT’S TIME TO START PLANNING FOR THE 2017 TAX SEASON It’s hard to think about planning ahead for 2017 taxes when you haven’t even thought yet about filing for 2016. But the best time to prepare for the next year’s tax season is actually before the current year-end. Here are some tax-planning strategies to act on at the end of every year. Taking these steps may reduce your tax obligations down the road. Manage Tax Brackets by Deferring Income Being placed in a higher income-tax bracket can cost you tens of thousands of dollars. Deferring or reducing income is a way to avoid paying more money if you’re on the bracket threshold. Remember that tax brackets are graduated, so only the income that exceeds the threshold for the higher bracket is taxed at the higher rate.

for on the IRS website . Benefit More from Your Charitable Giving In addition to the above IRA point, there are several benefits to charitable giving when it comes to income taxes. Here are a couple of tips of note before the year-end: Itemization. Only people who make itemized deductions on income tax returns can deduct charitable contributions, and the deduction is not available to those who claim the standard deduction. If you do choose to itemize deductions, you must have records to substantiate your donations. Notably, all gifts worth $250 or more require a written acknowledgment from the charity describing the gift, date and its value.

Timing. For gifts sent by mail, the envelope must be postmarked by Dec. 31 in order to be deducted on 2016 returns. For gifts of marketable securities, the donor can deduct the full fair market value of the stock and also avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciation. In contrast to the Maximize your pretax contribution to a health savings account (HSA). A HSA is used “postmark rule” above, however, the asset must be delivered to the charity by yearwith a high-deductible healthcare plan to end. save for qualified medical expenses. For 2017, a family may contribute up to $6,750 Avoid the Alternative Minimum Tax ($3,400 for individuals), and if you’re 55 The alternative minimum tax (AMT) was or older, you can contribute an additional enacted to prevent high-income taxpayers $1,000. Amounts in the account not spent from reducing their tax obligations through in the event of an account holder’s death various legislative loopholes. It is a parallel can transfer to a spouse on a tax-free basis method of calculating tax liability that or another named beneficiary as estate expands the amount of taxable income by income. adding income items that are traditionally You could consider the following two strategies to avoid a higher tax bracket. (Consult with your tax professional to determine the best strategy for your situation.)

Make a donation to charity from your individual retirement account. Individuals age 70½ or older are required to take a minimum distribution from their IRAs. These distributions are considered taxable income. To avoid this, you may instead give up to $100,000 tax-free directly from an IRA to a qualified charity, which you can search 072 ALT Magazine | February 2017

tax-free and removing or reducing many deductions allowed under the regular tax system. The IRS has increased the AMT exemption for 2016, which is the amount taxpayers can deduct from income calculations when determining their potential AMT liability. For individuals, the 2016 exemption begins

to phase out at $119,700; for married couples filing jointly, it begins at $159,700. The best thing to do is to look at your 2015 tax return and determine how close you came to paying the AMT. Then, review your 2016 items that may increase it. Conversely, if you paid the AMT in 2015 but do not need to in 2016, you may be eligible to claim a tax credit for certain items on your 2016 taxes. Respond to Life Changes It is good practice to always review your account beneficiaries and trust agreements at the end of the year. For example, the birth of a new grandchild may require an update to your accounts. Other big changes--such as starting or selling a business, buying or selling property beyond your personal home or investments that result in sales, losses or gains--can also influence your tax status. You should also review your estate plan and documents every several years not only to update family changes, but also to stay current with tax code changes. While there is nothing significant affecting your 2016 filings, tax legislation changes surprisingly often. And with a new president and Congress on the horizon, it doesn’t hurt to keep an eye out for new laws or other adjustments, and be ready to make changes to your own filing accordingly. Beyond that, taking regular stock of your income streams, making the deadlines and anticipating your return in advance of tax season will make it easier when the time to file rolls around each year.
