DEBBIE BROWER
There is a saying that God works in mysterious ways. Sometimes you wonder what He is thinking. Other times you are sure He has heard your prayers and the answer is yes. For years, I have always wanted to teach at the college level. Last year, I was asked to be an instructor for an advanced graphic design class at Texas A&M UniversityTexarkana. I was sure God had finally heard my prayers and was so excited! I loved that class! It was a hands-on, experiential learning environment. My students were excited to be learning something new and usable for a career in mass communications. We had a lot of fun, they learned a lot, and last spring flew by. When fall came about, I had so many things going on that I was unable to teach. I have to say that Alaska took precedence! I missed my students and the classroom, but maybe one day I’ll be back. Teachers in today’s schools have difficult jobs. It has been a long time since I have been in school – an even longer time since I was in high school. I remember my parents telling me that if I got in trouble at school, I would get in more trouble when I got home and I would not get in trouble again. Today’s world is different in so many ways. However, today’s teachers are still the wonderful, caring people they have been all along. They nurture our children, making them smarter, stronger, and capable of doing so many things with their lives. They encourage and help them become the adults they are meant to be. I loved highlighting educators in this issue – just as much as I loved researching the articles in our Home and Garden section! I have so many projects for Mike to work on – ummmmm…..maybe not Mike, but somebody! He is not necessarily the best handyman, so maybe Marshall might be a better choice! We will see. There are some really fun things for you to check out this month! I hope you enjoy and get your home -- and your family – ready for summer! May God bless you…

Cultivating Minds: Educator Gayle Hill
Motivates Students to Overcome Dyslexia
By Brittny Ray Crowell
“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” --1 Corinthians 15:58
Few will ever truly understand the depths of a teacher’s heart. Few are able to grasp their nearly supernatural capacity to motivate, to love, to believe in the ability of all children despite the many challenges they carry with them every day into the classroom. Yet, regardless of those who may not understand the breadth and depth of their purpose, teachers like Gayle Hill continue to press forward to unlock every child’s potential to learn and succeed.
ALT-Mag.com | March 2017 015
Gayle Hill with students. L to R: Trenton Robbins, Izabella Magana, Gayle Hill, Preston Smith, Jose Chavez
Long before she began her career in education, Gayle, a native of Fort Smith, AR, always had an affinity for children. “Whether it [was] babysitting, teaching Sunday school, or working at a daycare, I have always been drawn to kids.” A dedicated mother, Gayle started studying to become an educator once her four children, Hays, Tisha, Tiffany, and Tiylor were old enough to attend school. “I would take all the kids to school and take classes during the day so that I could still be with them in the evening.” She eventually graduated from Texas A&MTexarkana with a Bachelor’s of Science with a special education endorsement a few months after her oldest son graduated high school. Gayle started out teaching K-5th grade special education for two years, where after she began teaching 1st5th grade students with dyslexia at Nash Elementary as she has done for the past 14 years. Having a firsthand understanding of the frustration her
students face every day was a driving force behind her decision to teach children with the disorder. Both she and one of her daughters were diagnosed
with dyslexia. “Growing up as a child in the 60’s and 70’s, people still didn’t know a lot about dyslexia,” she says. Teachers told her parents that she would never learn to read or write and that she would be better off in trade school. Nevertheless, Gayle persevered, teaching herself tricks to help her get by in school. “I didn’t know until college that it was [actually] dyslexia.” After overcoming her own challenges with the disorder, she has dedicated her life to making sure none of her students ever gives in to discouragement or low expectations. “I wanted to help children that were struggling. I wanted to help others learn to love reading and to know they can learn to cope with dyslexia,” she says. Though the disorder certainly comes with its own unique set of challenges, Gayle encourages her students to face their obstacles realistically, yet, with the belief that their goals are always still within their reach. “You never outgrow it or get over it. You learn differently. There is no instant fix, but you can still be successful,” she says. “I want to help [these] kids have higher self-esteem and goals. I want them to see that Mrs. Hill [did] it and so can [they].”
“[I love] watching their faces light up when they discover they can read and spell, watch[ing] their self-esteem build over time, and to see ex-students become successful adults.” Many misconceptions about dyslexia still exist; yet, Gayle works hard to dispel these myths to both parents and students. Contrary to popular belief, there is no correlation between dyslexia and a student’s intelligence. In fact, many of the world’s most brilliant minds were dyslexic, including Albert Einstein and Leonardo da Vinci. Likewise, it is widely believed that one of the telltale signs of the disorder is a child writing letters backwards. Yet, educators and diagnosticians primarily look for students who perform lower in reading, spelling and writing. “[Students] will also have trouble with letter sounds and letter blends (phonics),” Gayle explains. “We use a battery of norm reference tests to assesses [those areas].” Thankfully, attitudes and strategies have greatly changed towards educating students with dyslexia, and Gayle is a prime example of an educator willing to ALT-Mag.com | March 2017 017
do everything possible to meet her students’ needs. “My philosophy is [that] learning should be fun,” she says. “Students will learn better if they are enjoying what they are doing. ” While working in small pull out groups, Gayle integrates many activities to keep her students engaged. “What we do is kind of repetitive trying to build one skill on top of another, so I joke and kid around with them a lot,” she says. “I try to exaggerate with funny voices when reading to keep them engaged. We may play hangman with their spelling words for the day or some other small quick [activity] to make [learning] more interactive than pencil and paper work.” In addition to finding time to schedule remediation, building her students’ confidence is a constant daily challenge. “I feel the biggest struggle is building up a student’s self-esteem. They feel dumb or stupid because they can’t read or spell as well as others their age. It is a struggle to get them to understand that [it’s] a long process that does not happen overnight, but if they will stick with it they will learn to read and spell better. My favorite quote is ‘Everyone is a reader… some just haven’t found their favorite book yet.’”
018 ALT Magazine | March 2017
Nevertheless, Gayle insists that each day is not without its rewards. “[I love] watching their faces light up when they discover they can read and spell, watch[ing] their self-esteem build over time, and to see ex-students become successful adults.” When she’s not in the classroom, Gayle’s hobbies include reading, painting, crafting and playing with her grandchildren. No matter how tired and weary she may become after a long week of pouring every bit of herself into her students’ success, she can always depend on her family and God to renew her strength. “I would not, nor could not be the teacher I am today without the love and support of my wonderful husband and family,” she says. “[Most of all] I give God all the glory and praise because I wouldn’t be anything without Him.” When it comes to her future as an educator, Gayle has no intention of changing her path anytime soon. “I plan to continue teaching dyslexic students as long as I can. It’s my passion,” she says. “I love working for TISD. I know this is where God has put me and I will stay until God moves me.”

Mark Wilcox UAHT Paramedic Program Director and Lead Instructor at UACCH Nominated by UACCH
1
Tell us a little about yourself? I was born and raised in Lewisville, AR. After graduating High School in 1998, I started working in Emergency Medical Services as an EMT in Lewisville. I received Paramedic licensure in 2001 from Texarkana College. I completed the Associates of Applied Science –Paramedic degree at UAHT in 2008, and completed the Bachelors of Science Paramedic Degree in 2015 from UAMS. I have worked for ambulance services in Lafayette, Hempstead, Howard, and Nevada Counties over an 18 year career in EMS. Currently I am the UAHT Paramedic Program Director and Lead Instructor.
2 3
When did you start teaching? I began teaching the EMT Basic course at UAHT in 2004 as an Adjunct instructor. In 2007 UAHT launched the Paramedic Program, for which I was lead instructor. In 2015, I was named the UAHT Paramedic Program Director.
Why did you decide to be teacher? I always enjoyed having students ride along with me while I was working on the ambulance. I thought I may be able to offer something more to the students in the class room.
020 ALT Magazine | March 2017
4 5
Tell me about the most influential teacher you have had. I can’t name just one teacher that influenced me. I have been lucky throughout my education to have several great educators. In high school I had Mr. Marracino (science) and Mr. Nix (Math). In college I had the legendary Judy Garret and John Hopkins (both science). In EMS education there was Jerry Hutchison, Linda Adams, Harold Shray, and Dr. Danny Bercher. Each one of these educators have influenced me in life and the way I teach. I have truly been blessed with excellent educators.
How do you get to know the students in your classroom? I believe in a deep personal relationship with my students. It begins during the application process and continues through their time in my program. We often have conversations between classes and on breaks. We take personality tests and discuss the results. I try to create a classroom environment that is open and honest so the students know they can come to me at any time.
6 7
How do you motivate your students to become involved in the classroom? These students will be making life or death decisions. We have adopted a robust simulation program that allows the students to take the knowledge they have acquired and use it on life-like manikins in “real world” situations complete with family members. As students work through these simulations they operate on their own. If they make a mistake they will have to deal with the aftermath. It doesn’t take long for the students to realize the gravity of their decisions. That makes for an excellent motivator. What issues in education are of greatest concern to you, and why? At present, my biggest concerns are barriers to education. Potential students never start their education because of cost prohibits, job schedules, and doubting that they can be successful. I am truly proud of our institution for combating all of these barriers. We are one of the most affordable schools in the state, we have a lot options for scheduling, and we have the programs and faculty to insure that anyone willing to dedicate the time can be successful.
8 9 10
What advice would you give someone considering a career in teaching? Be a life-long learner. As times change and generations change you have to adapt to your students. Do not expect them to adapt to you. Always look to stay ahead of them through your own education. What is the most rewarding part of your job? I enjoy talking to past graduates. A lot of them have told me of a time when a situation was as bad as it could be and they could hear my voice offering suggestions. It’s a great feeling to know that I had an impact. Any funny student stories? There are too many to count. I must refrain from sharing them because without the proper context they sound horrible to the general public.

Valerie Owen Associate Professor of Art at Texarkana College
Oakes Stanley Nominated by Megan
1
Tell us a little about yourself? I am married to Randy Owen and we have been married for 41 years. We have four children Clint, Emily, Parker and Marisa, two of which are artists. My biggest influence is my mother who taught art at Texarkana College. I was hired on the adjunct art faculty in 1981. We worked together for 14 years and upon her retirement in 1995 I was hired to the full time faculty position. Mary Long, my mother taught me so much about design, color, composition, painting etc... I observed her in class critiquing a student work with a positive attitude and always ending the critique on a positive and uplifting note. The most important thing she taught me was how to treat students. Her motto was “nothing succeeds like success” and now that is mine. My classroom consists of two rooms. I have 3 Art Appreciation classes, Watercolor Painting, Drawing and Oil Painting, the last 3 classes are lab classes. The students are free to move around, and because of this they get to know each other better. I like a relaxed atmosphere which I think creates a more productive student. As I’m helping one student the others can hear the information that I’m giving and they can apply that to their
022 ALT Magazine | March 2017
work. My mother always said every bit of knowledge puts a wrinkle on your brain and makes you smarter. My first two years of college were spent at TC, the best place to begin anyone’s college years. After graduating from Southern Arkansas University with a BSE in Art Education, I earned a MS in Art Education from East Texas State UniversityTexarkana. When I was 19 years old I painted a painting of an American flag. It had faded over the years so I repainted it and donated it to the college and it is now on permanent exhibit in the Ross Perot Museum at our library at Texarkana College. It was an honor to be able to contribute to his museum.
2
How do you motivate your students to become involved in the classroom? The TC Art Department participates in the Fall Gallery Hop every year. I decided to get the students involved in a community service project, which we plan on doing every year. The students worked on the project during the Gallery Hop. Through several conversations with the Domestic Violence Prevention staff we discussed my students painting several large moveable
murals to decorate the walls of the Battered Women’s Shelter. The staff was excited and pleased about the happiness this could bring to the children and their mothers. Twenty students volunteered their time and 21 paintings ranging in size from 2’x4’ to 4’x12’ were completed. The pride I felt in those students was enormous. Some students took off work and others spent many hours outside of class to complete projects before Christmas. Each student at my request painted a ladybug on their painting. My sister Shannon was a victim of domestic violence and her nickname was ladybug. I think that the whole experience was part of my healing process.

What is the most rewarding part of your job? The most rewarding part of my job is the students. I enjoy walking in to my class and just talking with them. Their ideas and enthusiasm are contagious. In my Art Appreciation classes I try to tap in to the students artistic abilities by having them do several small art works through the semester. It is very rewarding to me and the students when they discover their hidden talents. What advice would you give someone considering a career in teaching? My advice for someone considering a career in teaching is to know that you never stop learning. Students can also teach the teacher new ideas and a ways to approach subjects. Every student is an individual with their own unique abilities along with the emotions of happiness and sadness. I always looked at each student as if they were my own child and treat them with the same respect I would my own.

Why did you decide to be teacher? I have always enjoyed working with children. Also, I knew one day I would want to have the same schedule as my children. How do you get to know the students in your classroom? The first few weeks of school we do a lot of sharing. They tell me different things about themselves. Also, we do a lot of small groups where they can talk to me more one on one. How do you motivate your students to become involved in the classroom? Each week we have a class leader. That person helps me run errands, hand out papers, hold the door. Also, I have them help each other. They love being partnered with someone they can help.
6 7 8
What issues in education are of greatest concern to you, and why? I think we are pushing kids to grow up too fast. I feel that children need time to play and just be kids. By playing I don’t mean in front of a screen though.
What advice would you give someone considering a career in teaching? Teaching is hard work, but so rewarding. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes.
What is the most rewarding part of your job? Seeing my 18 kiddos everyday and hearing them tell me they love me. Also, seeing them grow each day. It is amazing how much they have learned since the first day of school.

When did you start teaching? I started teaching 13 years ago.
026 ALT Magazine | March 2017

Why did you decide to be teacher? In high school I was diagnosed with a rare disease on my vocal chords and I was unable to talk for 2 years. I had 8 surgeries and it was difficult trying to find a major in college. Growing up, I was very active in sports, student council, Top Teens of America, 4-H club, FBLA, and other community events. This helped me realize that I loved helping others. If I could not talk I could always get a microphone and teach that way. So, teaching and coaching was the perfect job for me. Tell me about the most influential teacher you have had. My basketball coach, Coach Tucker, was amazing. I loved the inspirational talks and stories he would tell us. He would always motivate us to do great in everything that we set out to do and even to this day I am still truly grateful. Mrs. Ramage helped fuel my passion for radio/t.v./film, and Ms. Sackett, Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Shen, Ms. Burkett, Mr. Boston, were all also very influential in my life. How do you get to know the students in your classroom? I use questionnaires and games to I find out their interests. This helps me to later recall something from those questions to spark up conversations. I also give a lot of my students’ nicknames; Hannah Banana, Stacey Lou, Lil Bit, Bullet etc.
6
7 8 9
How do you motivate your students to become involved in the classroom? High Expectations!!! I get the honor of coaching and teaching so a lot of what I do involves motivating. I think that I inspire my students for greatness. I ask them to set goals for themselves and strive to reach those goals. If you can dream it, you can achieve it.
What issues in education are of greatest concern to you, and why? I think the greatest concern today would have to be parental involvement. I wish parents knew how to prepare their child for standardized testing, more involvement in after school activities, and had a better relationship with the teachers.
What advice would you give someone considering a career in teaching? You have to have a passion for helping others, if so go for it.
What is the most rewarding part of your job? Teaching has been very rewarding and I am truly grateful because I feel as though I have touched the lives of so many. To me, the greatest benefit of teaching is doing for others and making a difference.
10
Any funny student stories? Funny stories, too many to tell. I’ll tell you an amazing one. I am very outgoing so I told my assistant coach that I wanted to take the basketball girls to Florida. He was not for it at first because it had never been done. Of course, I pulled it off and we had the time of our lives. The basketball girl’s had never been on a plane and most had never been to Disney World. The tears and thank you’s made it worth all of the hard work raising the money.

ties for people in this age range to exercise their collective wisdom; maintain their physical health through activities such as bicycling, dancing, and walking; and to travel with a group to destinations both nationally and internationally. The SAGE name does not stand for a specific title, but was chosen to denote the wisdom collected through life events and the more active (green) retirement that wellness has afforded us.
Seasoned Learning
In August of 2016, Texarkana College launched a new program for people 46 years of age and older called SAGE. The mission of this program is to provide opportuni-
It is estimated that more than ten-thousand people in the Texarkana metropolitan area fall within this age range, and I have certainly seen them as I’ve eaten at local restaurants and attended social events. These citizens are healthier, more highly educated, and more active than previous generations were. Sociologists tell us that people in the younger levels of this age range might expect to live thirty years past retirement age. The SAGE Program wants to provide this regional cohort with the tools necessary to live a vibrant “Third Stage” of life.

Examples of classes offered by SAGE last fall and this spring included: • Armchair Traveler • A Little Light Dancing • ENCORE: Writing the Life You Have Lived • Sacred Spaces in America • Biblical Geography • The Science Series for SAGE • Unleashing Your Creativity Through Painting • Financial Workshop • The U.S. Constitution • Joseph Campbell’s Heroes • The Scots-Irish Legacy in Our Genes • Uke Can Do It -- #1 and #2 • Arkansas Trails on Two Wheels • Learn Mahjong • Who Believes What, and Why • Texarkana: History of Place • Criminal Justice in our Community

Future planned trips include New York City, Costa Rica, Panama, Israel, Spain and Portugal. Membership in the SAGE Program at Texarkana College is a wise investment in our future health and wellness. The more active and involved we stay, the better it is for our mental and physical health. If you are looking for “just the right gift” for someone who has everything, membership in the SAGE Program would be perfect. A&M-Texarkana to Embark on The Big Event Day of Community Service On Saturday, April 8, students, faculty, staff and alumni from Texas A&M University-Texarkana will show their appreciation to the Texarkana community during The Big Event: Eagle Pride City Wide, a day of community service. Participants in The Big Event will complete “done-in-a-day” community service projects, ranging from raking leaves, washing windows, removing debris, cleaning closets, spreading mulch, painting and minor repairs, to organizing donated goods, participating in games and activities with senior citizens, tutoring children and completing other proposed projects. The Big Event has become somewhat of a national phenomenon at a number of colleges and universities throughout the United States. It originated at Texas A&M University in 1982 when six students felt the need to give something back to the communities of College Station and Bryan, Texas. Since that time, more than 100 universities have joined the effort. “The Big Event at Texas A&M University-Texarkana strives to uphold the ideals of unity and service,” said student organizers of The Big Event at A&M-Texarkana. “This one-day event is not based on socioeconomic need, but rather, it is a way for the student
body to express their gratitude to the community that supports Texas A&M University-Texarkana. It is important to remember The Big Event is not about the number of jobs completed or the number of students who participate. Instead, it is the interaction between students and residents and the unity that results throughout the community that makes The Big Event so unique.” Prior to 2017, A&M-Texarkana students participated in iServe Week, which focused on assisting local non-profit organizations. “We are excited to expand our efforts to include projects for those in the community who may need some assistance with individual projects,” organizers said. “We will have some tools available, but residents and organizations are asked to provide supplies for jobs that require materials.” A&M-Texarkana is now accepting applications for work sites and sponsors for The Big Event. For more information, contact Michael Stephenson, coordinator of Student Life, at Michael.Stephenson@tamut. edu or (903) 223-1362. Keeping memories alive... When someone we love dies, we often fear that we will forget them. We fear that we may forget what they look like, their fragrance, their smile or the sound of their laughter. For a while, those were my fears, I remember a dream I had about my Bubba shortly after his death; it was a still photo. I awoke that morning thinking why a photograph, why was it an image of him only? What did it mean? Looking back now I realize that it was my fear of forgetting him, of not having my brother physically present, only his photographs. But in time, I have come to realize that I have not forgotten him, will never forget him, I can’t forget him. He is on my mind each and every day, and simple things remind me of his presence. Ironically, I hear his laughter in his daughter Tori, I see his playfulness in my son Jaxson, and I recognize attitude through my daughter Taylor-Anne. The greatest thing I feel is his love through two very special friends I gained through his death, Chris & Jimmy. So many subtle reminders that he is still very much a part of my life and I believe his spirit is all around me always.
We are only limited to our own limitations when it comes to honoring and remembering our loved ones. Like anything else in our grieving, it is finding what is best for YOU, and what you are comfortable with. A simple memory garden may be all you wish to do, visiting the grave and insuring that there are always fresh flowers or that it is neatly groomed; all these are gestures of remembrance. But that’s not me-his grave is too permanent for me. I choose to celebrate him through fund-raising and helping in any way I can in the fight against cancer. For me, this is the best way to give back to our community and my way of trying to make that small difference in the world we live in. I am one person but with the help of our team and so many others I believe one day we will find a cure. When I lost my brother it was and still is the absolute hardest thing I’ve ever experienced. We were supposed to grow old together and watch our kids grow up and spoil them together. As you see, God had a different plan. He called Bubba home. No more suffering, no more pain.. I made a promise to Bubba I would do what I could to help in the fight against cancer. He died January 10, 2009, and March of 2010 I organized the 1st Annual March Masquerade. I had no idea what I was doing and have learned through the years what works and what doesn’t. Also, I formed a Relay for Life team in his memory-Team Sumoas. We attended our first relay in 2010. The support from

family, friends & my community was absolutely amazing. In the past seven years I am proud to say we have raised a combined total of over $25,000 for the American Cancer Society. Today our Relay for Life Team Sumoas continues to organize this great event. This will be our 8th year! It is our team’s annual fundraiser and all proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. My brother Michael “Sumo” Sams is the inspiration behind our event but our mission is to educate our community on awareness of all cancers. We do it for the HOPE that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported and that one day cancer will be eliminated.

GUIDE Looking for a contractor or someone to help out with your lawn? To help you find the very best places to call in Texarkana, we created this comprehensive home and garden guide...new for 2017! Welcome to ALT’s Home & Garden Guide, a list of the best places to find home builders, construction needs, landscaping, and more in Texarkana! You will also find tips on what’s hot and what’s not! Enjoy living your life in a home you love!
How does your garden grow? With the right tools of course! Having the right tools means all the difference in maintaining a healthy, attractive garden. If you're a new gardener, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the variety of tools available at your local gardening supply store. All of them have their uses, but certain tools are more essential than others. If you're just starting out in the world of gardening, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with a few of the most basic tools so you have everything that you need to grow a beautiful garden.
Spade A spade is one of the most essential gardening tools, since you use it to dig and move soil when planting. It usually has a flat, rectangular blade that allows you to dig with precision. The terms spade and shovel are often used interchangeably, but a shovel typically has a curved blade that works best for scooping soil, not digging. With a spade, you can make holes for planting trees, shrubs and large groupings of perennials, and edge along a garden bed. It also works well for digging up plants that you’re transplanting. A spade even comes in handy for breaking up roots, sod and weeds because its tip is usually pointed. Opt for a spade with slick metal surface so soil and other materials slide off easily.
Hand/Digging Fork
Trowel
When you need to loosen up soil, a digging fork is a useful tool. It features four tines that are flat and thick, so it works extremely well to break up firmly packed soil that a spade or hoe can’t get through. It even works well in existing beds because it won’t bring up weed seeds or turn over the layers of soil if you simply drive it into the bed and wiggle it. You can also use a digging fork to mix in soil amendments or remove a clump of plants without bringing too much soil out with them. Opt for a digging fork with heavy-duty tines so they don’t get bent when working in rocky soils.
Like a spade or hoe, a gardening trowel is used for digging small holes and moving soil. It has a pointed blade that is shaped like scoop and longer than the blade on a spade. You can use a trowel to dig planting holes for vegetables, annuals, perennials and other small plants, but its scooped shape also allows you to lift the plant itself from the soil for transplanting. A trowel also works well for weeding, mixing soil and soil amendments and cultivating. When choosing a trowel, opt for a cast or forged style so it will resist bending if you encounter rocks in your soil.

C TOP kitchen TRENDS
FOR 2017
1. Mixed Materials
2
In the design world, there is continuous discussion on whether one should mix and match anything from fabrics, to patterns and even raw materials used. Mixing materials in your kitchen can be stunning if executed correctly. Envision this: white cabinets in the majority of your kitchen paired with an
oversized island featuring darker colored cabinets. To downplay the harsh contrasting tones, we would likely choose a beige-brown granite or solid surface for your countertops. Incorporating mixed materials in your kitchen gives you the best of both worlds and joins the contrasting tones in perfect harmony.
2. Under-Cabinet Lighting The addition of under-cabinet lighting is a subtle touch that brings many benefits to the heart of your home. The discreet lighting option is extremely energy-efficient, as it allows you to use fewer lights in the kitchen. Another pro of under-cabinet lighting in the kitchen is that they really brighten up your countertops – making it easier to read those recipes, and less likely for you to knick your finger! This simple lighting option will showcase the little details that make up your kitchen in a big way.
j 3. All White Kitchens
All white kitchens are truly a trend that will never go out of style. The utilization of a white décor creates an optical illusion of depth in your kitchen. Plus, all white kitchens work with any flooring material! White kitchens are essentially a blank canvas that can be slightly altered with the seasons throughout the year. It’s easy to bring in pops of color with vases, towels, flowers, or even a bowl of fruit!

4. Waterfall Edge Countertops Marble countertops are a classic kitchen element, so why not incorporate it into your kitchen in an eye-catching way? Commonly used on kitchen islands, waterfall edge countertops create a seamless line by having the counter material run vertically down the edge of the island to the floor. Waterfall edge counters are here to stay – helping kitchens everywhere maintain sleek and clean lines.
j
C 5. COPPER ACCENTS
Copper is a unique alternative to the traditional stainless steel hardware in the kitchen. Copper can be used in exposed pipes as decoration, as an accent side to an island or even as a midcentury modern backsplash.

6. Detailed Backsplashes Backsplashes are a great area of the kitchen for your personality to shine! It can be simple, ornate, or eclectic. Backsplash materials can vary from mosaic tiles, subway tiles, natural stone or glass, to even copper sheets. The endless possibilities allow for a creative touch to the focal point of your kitchen.

Natural Cabinets & Trim
Bring Us Your Dreams A great kitchen is the fulfillment of an elaborate, composite fantasy, a realization of the longest personal “wish list” possible.
Texarkana’s Choice
Since 1978
Jones Custom Cabinets & Trim has been one of very few, truly custom, design/build cabinetry and trim companies in the Texarkana area. We refer to ourselves as Cabinetmakers, the traditional title for craftsmen who design and fabricate home furnishings of fine wood. Each cabinet in a wall of cabinets is individually designed, on site, to serve a particular function, while building upon the rhythms and orchestrated proportions of the entire wall. That wall coordinates with, and expands upon the themes of the entire room. We work closely with individual clients and/or other design professionals, to custom build the ideal cabinetry and trim for each home we are invited into. We can precisely execute detailed designs by others, or tease a truly exceptional room out of a sketch on a dinner napkin. We work in new construction or renovations. Almost forty years experience confirms our belief that every size and style of home offers exciting opportunities for creative woodworking design Great cabinetmaking design is as emotional as it is technical. It wells from the passion we feel for the materials and the process. It manifests itself in the work, and is shared with those who eventually live surrounded by the results. One of our most rewarding moments is when a client catches the excitement of a design. We see it happen… a little smile, and the realization,

TOP 10 HOME DECOR TRENDS
FOR 2017
1. Cerused woods
s
Also referred to as a limed-wax finish, this technique adds color to wood while also revealing its unusual grain. It’s expected to be big for cabinets and flooring, especially in dramatic hues of black, “greige,” and dark gray.
3. TEXTURES
Whether real or faux, leather, shagreen, and parchment will be hot materials for 2017. Mainly, these hides will be used as an unexpected pop of texture in accent furniture. 056 ALT Magazine | March 2017
4. STATEMENT HEADBOARDS Designers have noticed a pattern when it comes to beds: The emphasis is on a headboard rather than a traditional bed (the kind that comes with a matching footboard). And those headboards? They’re statement pieces with bold silhouettes and luxe fabrics.
2. MARBLE SURFACES If we had to name one of the biggest trends of 2017, marble would be it. In white or black, the material has jumped over from chic cafes and restaurants and into our kitchens and bathrooms. It’s not just for countertops, though: Look out for marble motifs in carpets, wallcoverings, and even fabrics.
5. shiny metal finishes Think shiny hardware is so ’80s? Think again. Polished brass and bronze knobs, knockers, pulls, and faucets are back in a big way. It’s a trend that’s easy to bring into your home — just swap out your current hardware.
6. MATTE APPLIANCES Stainless steel has long been the default choice for stylish kitchens everywhere. Not in 2017. Following the trend in beauty, matte-finish appliances in dark hues bring an element of drama into the kitchen.
7. patterned wallcoverings 8. JEWEL TONES After years of solid walls, wallpaper is poised for a comeback. Designers are seeing an interest in all-over, dramatic patterns like paisley, overscaled florals, and abstract designs. You’ll see these wallcoverings in small spaces, like powder rooms, often in darker hues.
No longer are homeowners (and renters with understanding landlords) content with blank white walls. Jewel tones like emerald and amethyst add warmth and personality to a space, particularly in entryways and small spaces. It’s not just about hue but also intensity. Even neutral paint colors like gray can go bolder.
9. nailhead details
You’ve seen them on sofas for ages, but now nailhead details jump to accent pieces like storage chests, credenzas, and even light fixtures. They even form their own patterns — no longer limited to the edges.
10. overdyed rugs
- See more at: www.trulia.com
We’ll never see sisals and solids go out of fashion, but there is something new in the world of rugs. It’s all about an overdyed effect that features rich, saturated colors. These colorful showstoppers are practically pieces of art for your floor. ALT-Mag.com | March 2017 057

5 DEBTS YOU NEED TO TACKLE BEFORE YOU RETIRE Debt can be a burden at any age because it can prevent you from getting ahead financially. But debt can be an especially heavy weight in retirement. Making monthly debt payments can leave you with less money to cover necessary expenses — especially if you’re living on a fixed income. Taking steps to eliminate debt now can keep it from derailing your retirement. Focus on paying off these bills if you want to retire without debt. 1. Mortgage Debt Mortgages are the biggest source of debt for Americans, according to a survey on American debt. So if you can eliminate this debt, you’ll likely cut out one of your biggest expenses and free up more income in retirement. You have several options to pay off your mortgage faster or reduce the amount you owe. If you’re still many years away from retirement, you might benefit from refinancing to a shorterterm mortgage — such as a 15-year

loan — that will also reduce the amount of interest you pay over time.
Credit card debt typically carries a high interest rate, so get rid of it. The longer it takes you to pay it off, the more you will pay in interest. That will leave you with less money to stash in retirement savings or to pay down other debt. Remember, unlike mortgage and student loan interest, you can’t deduct credit card interest on your tax return.
If you’re closer to retirement age, make additional payments on your current mortgage and pay it off faster. You can make an extra payment each month. Make sure your extra payment goes toward the loan principal so your debt decreases faster. You also can use a work bonus to make an extra mortgage Use an online credit card calculator to see how long it will take to pay off payment at the end of every year. what you owe based on the monthly Or, you can downsize years before payments you make. For example, if retirement to a house that requires a much smaller mortgage — and smaller you owe $5,000 on a card with a 15 percent annual percentage rate and utility, insurance and tax bills. Then, pay $300 per month, it will take one you can pay off your mortgage faster year and seven months to pay it off. and free up more income to boost And you’ll pay $642 in interest. If you retirement savings, or cover costs in increase monthly payments to $500, retirement. it will take only a year to wipe out 2. Credit Card Debt your debt, and you’ll pay just $375 in interest. About 1 in 3 American adults ages 55 to 64 carry a credit card balance — and You should always be paying above the the median amount they owe is $3,000, minimum on your credit card. However, according to an analysis of credit card if you are trying to get your debt debt. down fast, you might want to consider
making biweekly payments on your credit card. This will help you pay both interest and principle. 3. Student Loan Debt A survey by EdAssist, a provider of student loan repayment services, found that 78 percent of baby boomers carrying student loan debt said the money they owe has affected their ability to save for retirement. If you have student loan debt and you are still making payments, then consider paying this off before you retire. That way, you’ll have more money in your budget each month to boost retirement savings — and one less expense in retirement. You might be able to refinance your loans to get a lower interest rate and shorter repayment term. Doing so will help reduce the total amount of interest you pay and can help you pay off your loans faster. 4. Auto Loans More than one-fourth of adults ages
55 to 64 have auto loan debt, and the median owed is $10,000, according to a recent survey on debt. The percentage doesn’t shrink that much as adults reach retirement age either. The survey found that 20 percent of adults ages 65 and older have a car loan, with a median $8,000 owed. If you think you won’t be able to afford your car payments when you retire, consider trading in your pricey vehicle for a more affordable one. Ask yourself if you “really need” a luxury SUV. Look for a car you can buy with cash or with a smaller loan that can be paid off quickly. 5. Medical Debt It’s a good idea to pay off medical debt before you retire, since healthcare costs can be hefty in retirement. A 65-yearold couple retiring in 2016 will need an average of $260,000 to cover medical costs in retirement. A recent survey found that 17 percent of adults ages 55 to 64 have medical

debt, and the median owed is $700. Meanwhile, 9 percent of adults 65 and older have medical debt, with a median $1,000 owed. You might be able to negotiate your medical bills and lower the amount you have to pay. Use free resources such as the websites Healthcare Bluebook or New Choice Health to find the cost for certain medical procedures and learn if you were charged more than the going rate. Call the billing department and politely push for a discount if the rate you were charged is higher than the average. Fish Tales with Mike Brower Entry Effect Let me start out by saying this is not about politics. It is about some observations since the election. I was wondering how the new administration in Washington would affect the mood of fishermen this year. After doing some snooping, it appears that fishermens’ moods and outlook are way up as evidenced by full and over full fields in some tournament circuits, as opposed to the last eight years of low participation in the same circuits. For example, The Cowboy (Texas) division of the BFL has not seen a full field of 200 boats in years. So far this year we have had two tournaments, one with 230 boats and the other with 201. Some of the other circuits are seeing an increase in participation as well. The slow economy and lackluster job growth since the 2008 recession may finally be ending and fishermens’ outlook may be improving. There is more evidence in the wait times for a boat to be built. Longer wait times indicate that more fishermen are optimistic about the future and are buying or upgrading boats. The wait time for a new Ranger has gone from 1 month to 3 months and a Phoenix wait time has increased from 1-2 months to 2-3 months just to get a boat built. It would seem at least a segment of the population has high hopes for the economy and is willing to purchase new boats and to put their money up for tournaments, which has been lacking for the last few years. Fishing was reported to be an 8 billion dollar business before the downturn and that says the industry of fishing employs a lot of people. Let’s hope the engine is just warming up for more growth.

Partners for Paws Texarkana is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose aim is to serve the animal community through supporting rescues, sponsoring adoptions, providing outreach education programs, and advocating for animal rights. Our goal is to increase the number of spay/neuters and adoptions to decrease the number of animal euthanizations. Our board members and volunteers have a proven track record of helping animals in need. The work we do is solely funded by private donations. We’re extremely proud to say that 100% of all donations go toward the work we do for the animals. We consider everything that comes our way in the form of assistance a blessing. As volunteers, we share many wonderful moments with the animals and their adoptive families. This keeps us focused and on task toward meeting our goals.
