Summer is coming… It’s almost here! Although I have to say spring and fall are my favorite seasons, I love summertime, too. However. My body is not always prepared for it. This year I decided, along with my kids, Jaclyn and Marshall, and my best friend/ sister-by-another-mother, Anita Carver, to start working out. So at the end of January, we started doing just that. What I had once thought of as a chore is actually a lot of fun. I feel better and I sleep better (most nights). Anita and I, as well as Marshall, have even had a little personal training with Lily Bennett – and would recommend her to anyone wanting to get in shape quickly. She will definitely make you know you have been to the gym! I can’t say that I have lost a lot of weight, but I have lost inches and my clothes fit better. So I’ll keep it up for as long as I am able. Just like the Trapps, who have been working out for the past 20 years, I want to stay fit as long as I can. They are an inspiration to me and everyone who knows them. You can see the sparkle in their eyes and know they feel great! With all the workouts, I will be ready to go visit my mom in Alabama in June – it’s vacation time at Orange Beach, Alabama! Beach time is always the best! And getting to see my mom and the beach at the same time is priceless! Come on summer!

Trapped

in the

Moment

We all know that exercise is part of a healthy lifestyle, but so many times, our commitment to exercise can wane. Jim and Linda Trapp have been happily married for 56 years and through good times and hard times, they’ve supported each other. For the last 20 years, part of that support has been in working out together at Christus St. Michael Health and Fitness Center after a series of surgeries inspired Linda to get into the gym. “We are in our mid eighties, and we are still enjoying relatively good health, and I think exercise is a big factor in it,” Jim says. “My wife is a fighter. She doesn’t give in. Even with everything she’s been through, she was disciplined and motivated to deal with the problem, and it paid off.” Jim and Linda met on the steps of Walnut Street Church of Christ, a church they still attend today, as two newcomers to Texarkana. Linda had moved from Nashville, Arkansas, to work at an insurance company in town, and Jim had relocated from Greenville, Texas, to work at Red River Army Depot. When asked about their first date, Jim says that he couldn’t remember where they went. “I know we went for coffee, and I must not have been impressed with the place, but I was impressed with her,” Jim says. After getting married, the couple had two children, Phillip, who is a Mead-Johnson representative, and Jerry, who is an air traffic controller at Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Jim and Linda raised their boys in church. Linda taught six year olds in Sunday School for 30 years, and Jim taught junior high Sunday School and was a deacon. Jim worked internal audit at Red River and had a small CPA practice. Linda was a stay at home mom and volunteered at church. As the boys grew older, got married, and had kids of their own, Jim and Linda felt blessed that the boys were in happy, solid marriages and had great jobs. Linda says that they’ve been blessed with “wonderful daughter-in-laws.” Phillip is married to Kay, a director and teacher at the preschool department at Walnut Street Church of Christ. Jerry is married to Linda, a former teacher. Jim and Linda now have three grandchildren. Brooke Trapp is working on her PhD in music at Texas Tech University. Emma Faith Trapp will graduate high school next year in Houston, Texas, and Nathan Trapp is in the Army signal corp and is currently serving in Afghanistan. “We pray for Nathan and all of our grandkids every day,” Linda says. The Trapps have been in the same house since 1971 and have always enjoyed working in their yard. The house sits on four acres, and they maintain three of them. They cultivated a large garden and raised a lot of their own food like tomatoes, squash and cucumbers. Linda also canned her own pickles and made jelly that she would put in a newcomer’s basket at church. They’ve cut down on the size of their garden in the past several years, but they still enjoy growing some staples. “I used to can a lot of stuff, and we gave a lot of it away,” Linda says. “We love to be outside and work in the yard.” Jim is also an avid reader and fisherman. When he’s not fishing at Wright Patman or Bringle Lake, Linda says that he’s reading the Bible, biographies and books about history. “We used to have big ALT-Mag.com | May 2017 015

fish fries at the house!” Linda says. “We have really enjoyed the retirement years.” “We eat out about three nights a week together,” Jim says. “We also have a group of four or five couples that go out for Friday night date night. Some call it the ‘supper club.’ I call it the ‘Geriatric Society Meeting!’” So, what is the Trapp’s secret to such a strong commitment over that many decades? “The secret is give and take. Well, mostly give,” Linda says with a laugh. “We knew that our marriage was for life. But, I also got a good one.” Jim also credits their faith for their dedication to each other. The two like to begin each day reading their Bible. “The fact that we go to church together and worship together is a back surgery 25 years ago, Linda’s big part of our marriage,” he says. “She’s the blessing of my life.” physician sent her to rehab at St. Michael, and once she finished Though the two have enjoyed many rehab, she started working out at wonderful years and memories the Christus St. Michael Health and together, they have also had to face Fitness Center. “I just loved going tough times as a couple. Linda has there from the very beginning,” Linda had five spinal surgeries. After her says. “The staff is so wonderful and

friendly. They are so helpful to show you how to work the equipment and the machines. It really helped me get back on my feet.” After about three or four years of going on her own, Jim joined Linda at the gym. Now, the couple works out 3-4 times a week for an hour. Jim loves their indoor, rubberized track and Linda likes to walk or use the machines. “He’s very healthy, but I got him to join me. We encourage each other,” Linda says, “Sometimes he really wants to go, and I go with him, or vice versa.” Though Linda has had many surgeries to recover from, she says that going to the fitness center makes her feel better. “I have had high blood pressure, but because of working out, it stays down,” Linda says. “Working out helps you mentally, and it keeps us healthier and keeps us moving.” The Trapps have also met a lot of friends at the fitness center. “There is not only a physical benefit but a social benefit from working out at the fitness center,” Jim says. “We’ve

met friends that we see at certain times, and then, when you go at a different time, you see a whole different group. I’ve even made fishing friends.” Part of the reason why the couple has never considered changing fitness centers is the dedicated staff at Christus. Jim and Linda say that the staff are very in touch with their customers. “They are just like family to you after you’ve been there a while,” Linda says. “They care about you. They call or ask about you when you don’t come or you miss.” No matter what the future holds, the Trapps are committed to getting through it the same way they’ve faced everything the last 56 years... together. Three to four days a week, you can see them at the Christus Health and Fitness Center, and on a pretty day, you will see them in the yard. So Linda could continue her love of working in the yard, Jim also bought Linda a golf cart to help her get around their spacious acres. “There are limitations to how long she can be on her feet. Now, she can ride along and supervise me! I’m her yard boy!” he says with a laugh. “We’ve been blessed in so many ways,” Linda says. “We are very thankful.”

The truth about brain cancer. Did you know?

Brain tumors do not discriminate. Primary brain tumors (those that begin in the brain and tend to stay in the brain) occur in people of all ages, but they are statistically more frequent in children and older people. Metastatic brain tumors (those that begin as a cancer elsewhere in the body and spread to the brain) are more common in adults than children. This most recent update for 2017 from the Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States shows these numbers address incidence, trends and patterns in the United States only. • Nearly 80,000 new cases of primary brain tumors are expected to be diagnosed this year. Approximately one-third or 32% of brain and CNS tumors are malignant. • This includes more than 26,000 primary malignant and 53,000 nonmalignant brain tumors.

July 22, 2017

Morgan Patton & Travis “TJ” Martin TJ and I met during college at the University of Texas at Tyler. He was a baseball player and I was in a sorority (Delta Gamma!). We first crossed paths in the school parking lot and you might say it was love at first sight – even though TJ likes to recall me nearly running into him with my car, which totally did not happen. After a few Facebook messages that day (yes, we will have to tell our children that is how to came into contact) we began texting and hung out a few weeks later. TJ graduated shortly after we met in Fall of 2013 and moved back to his hometown of Plano, TX. After we “officially” began dating on February 1, 2014, we began living for the weekends doing long distance until I graduated in Fall 2014. After graduation, I myself moved to Dallas to be closer to TJ and began my career. Ever since I was a small child, Walt Disney World has had a special place in my heart because my family took yearly vacations there. Anyone who knows me, knows my love for all things Disney – especially TJ. My company was attending a conference in Orlando in September, and my boss was generous enough to let the marketing team fly out early for a few days to enjoy Orlando and visit Disney World. I was SO excited!! Little did I know, my boss, coworkers, and TJ had already been making plans for the surprise proposal. Friday morning before the conference started, my coworkers and I were getting everything set up and my boss was coordinating a meeting with a Disney executive to talk about future opportunities to work together. He then tells me I needed to sit in on the meeting with him from a marketing perspective (perfect way to keep me occupied all day, right?). So as I’m at work & preparing for the meeting, I’m assuming that TJ is also at work, like he said he was going to be – but he was in fact flying half way across the country to surprise me! Fast forward a little bit, it’s time for the meeting with my boss and this Disney executive. The meeting was to be held at the park so that we could all enjoy Magic Kingdom for the rest of the evening. As we approach the restaurant, Casey’s, my boss keeps saying “make sure you keep an eye out for the guy we’re meeting!” and as we are taking pictures in front of Cinderella’s castle with the Disney photographer (who was also in on it all), he says “Oh I think that’s him right there!” I turned around and my stomach dropped to my ankles to see TJ walking towards me. I immediately began crying and knew that this was the moment I had dreamt of my entire life. After a few sweet words, the love of my life knelt down and asked me the easiest question I’ve ever had to answer, to marry him. I said YES in front of Cinderella’s castle at the happiest place on Earth!! It was a fairytale and I play that moment over and over in my head. We spent that evening and the next two days at the parks enjoying our time together.

“It was the perfect proposal.”

Emily & Josh Buchanan October 10, 2014

Josh first saw me in 2010, however, the timing wasn’t right. I never even knew he was interested in me. October 25, 2013, it was cold and rainy. A mutual friend (and best man in the wedding) Adam Hadaway, invited me up to Foreman, AR, to go mudding and hang out around a camp fire at the deer lease. With the weather being nasty, I wasn’t wanting to get out, but I did. With the love of hunting, fishing and everything else outdoors, Josh and I immediately connected! Sometime in mid-March, 2014, Josh took my kids riding around on the 4-wheeler. Little did I know he was showing both of them a shiny diamond ring and the three of them were creating a plan on how and when Josh was going to propose. April 12, 2014, the four of us headed to Shreveport for a Brantley Gilbert concert. The typical me, griping about my outfit, not liking how it was fitting. My oldest child, who I thought was playing a game on Josh’s cell phone, says to me, “yeah Momma, I think it’s the shirt, it’s missing something. It’s too plain.” I held back tears after her confirming my fear that I didn’t look pretty enough for our special trip. With my youngest child at my side I continued to put my makeup on then I felt a tug at my hip trying to turn me around, as I spun around there was nothing, then I looked down to see Josh on one knee holding up a ring!! “Maybe this will make everything look better. Will you marry me?” Josh said in a shaky voice. I was speechless, the girls were giggling and I knew then they were in on the whole plan and that there hadn’t been a game being played on the cell phone, but instead, she was recording the beginning of the greatest love story!! There was no holding back the tears at that point! I wanted a fall wedding so I wasted no time building my detailed spread sheet of wedding party info, wedding venders, schedules and all the other small details sure to make a dream wedding complete.

Haley & Adrian Keener October 1, 2016

The Details

Parents of the Bride: Aron and Tonya Crabtree Parent of the Groom: Selva Keener

We met at church one Sunday morning in the little town of Simms, TX, and became high school sweethearts. After 4 years of a long distance relationship while Adrian served in the US Navy, Houston, TX, became our new home. Our favorite thing to do as a couple is travel and explore new places. Our first vacation together was a ski trip to Lake Tahoe, California, in 2010 and 5 years later, Adrian asked me to marry him on top of a beautiful mountain overlooking Lake Tahoe. Floods of emotion and happiness filled my heart that day. I still smile when I re-live that precious moment. The wedding planning began, and on October 1, 2016, we had the most magical wedding surrounded by the friends and family that have watched our love grow over the years. We are blessed beyond measure to have found the love we have in each other, and for this beautiful life we’re living!

Maid of Honor: Kelsey & Katlynn Crabtree

One of your favorite things that made your wedding special:

Ushers: Tyler Crabtree & Skylar Obenoskey

Our venue, Garrison Gardens, was perfect for our special day. After we said our vows and were announced husband and wife, a carriage picked us up and whisked us away through the woods for a private moment to soak it all in. This is when Adrian told me where we were going on our honeymoon that he had planned as a surprise. There are a few words that I think of when I think of our wedding day....dreamy, magical, intimate, and absolutely perfect!

Tiffany Lee & Tyler Blue June 4, 2016

Tyler and I met in high school. We were friends for a couple of years before we had a brief relationship. We both then went separate ways for a while to grow and find ourselves, and soon reconnected. We honestly give all the credit of our love story to the Lord. We believe He made each of us specifically for the other. I prayed for a man like Tyler and he prayed for someone like me and the Lord fulfills all His promises and brought us back together on His perfect timing. Our story isn’t the most unique or crazy, but it is by far our favorite.

One of our favorite things that made our wedding so special was being surrounded by our closest friends and family.

Wendy Garza & Kevin Canfield

February 21, 2015

We met in August of 2013 through mutual friends, Mat and Wendy Oglesby. We immediately hit it off and started dating. On July 4, 2014, he surprised me with a trip to Hot Springs after watching the fireworks on Lake DeGray. Saturday, July 5th, we had dinner at Via Roma Italian Restaurant in Hot Springs. After dinner, in front of the entire restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed. I was completely surprised. Unknown to me, my friend Wendy had asked me a few weeks prior to the proposal if I liked a ring that she had just gotten. It turned out to be my engagement ring.

Jeanne & Jim Spain

August 6, 2016

Jim and I met almost 5 years ago at the doctor’s office. I was working for my brother and Jim was one of his patients. After weeks of exchanging glances and casual conversation Jim finally worked up the courage to ask me on a date. Fast forward to March 4, 2016, to Jim kneeling on one knee in front of me at Garvan Gardens with the sun setting behind us over Lake Hamilton. The next few months flew by as we planned our dream wedding. Before we knew it our wedding day was here! August 6, 2016, was flawless. Our wedding day was everything we had imagined and so much more.

One of your favorite things that made your wedding special: We had a surprise guest show up to our wedding! George, Garvan Garden’s peacock, that lives at the garden decided to watch the whole wedding from the main window at the front of the chapel. George even decided he would stay around and greet some of our guest afterwards.

Katie Pesek & Eric Osburn July 1, 2017 Eric and I met at First Baptist Church through the Crossroads Singles Group. It didn’t take long to know he was the one for me. While we were celebrating his birthday at Olive Garden, Eric got down on one knee with the most beautiful ring I have ever seen with tears in his eyes.

Dine Out & Donate for Apraxia Who do you know who goes or has gone to speech therapy? Often, it’s easy to ‘see’ when someone is struggling with a disability but when the struggle is with speech, it’s often hidden. People tend to think there is something ‘wrong’ with the child when perhaps all they really need is a little more attention or patience. Share your voice & come out and have dinner while raising support for APRAXIA AWARENESS. Apraxia is a neurological speech disorder that affects a child’s ability to clearly & correctly produce syllables & words. Can you imagine knowing what you want to say but not being able to get the words out? Bring in this flyer, show it on your smartphone or tell the cashier you’re supporting the cause to make sure that a portion of your total will be donated to Apraxia Awareness. Proceeds will be used to pay for speech therapy and ipads.

Saturday, May 13th Twisted Fork will donate 20% of proceeds to Apraxia Awareness! 052 ALT Magazine | May 2017

RETIREMENT, STAGE THREE: PLANNING, CONTENTMENT AND REFLECTION - AND YOUR LEGACY When you are still firing on all cylinders, there may be no need to cut back on your retirement activities. Just because you have reached 75 and entered what the AARP labels the “older retirement years,” you don’t have to stop traveling, trying to perfect your golf game or working – whatever your choices during the most dynamic years of your retirement. You may be enjoying what can be one of the most wonderfully fulfilling times of your life. More than anything else, it is likely that your state of health will determine

when you must start applying the brakes. And that may not be for a very long time. It is no longer a novelty to find golfers in their 90s shooting their age or travelers in their mid-80s flying off to new destinations. Financial Planning Earlier in your retirement, you may have determined the smartest ways to withdraw funds from your nest egg. Perhaps you stayed invested in equities longer than previous generations, because you planned for a long, active retirement, not a short, sedentary one. As the years pass, it may be prudent to revisit your portfolio to decide whether any allocation shifts and changes in direction are needed to keep it in line with your situation. Certainly, if you have not yet done so, it is time to update any legal documents, wills, lists of named beneficiaries and charitable causes and anything else you want to make Apply for a part of your legacy. 90-Day Same-As-Cash Studies show that Cooper Tires Credit Card surprisingly large numbers of even astute investors All Major Credit Cards Accepted fail to tend to such matters. You can save your loved ones a great deal of anguish if you share this information, or at least keep a list of usernames and passwords along with account numbers and other information. Banks and financial institutions, to guard against unauthorized persons obtaining access to your money or your identity, may require death certificates and other information before they will unlock accounts and allow anyone else in. Even spouses with joint tenancy may have to supply death certificates and corroborating information – and wait weeks – to get access, unless they know the correct information. Fish Tales with Mike Brower Check Your Stuff This is the time of year that people are getting ready to get back out on the water -- unless you didn’t stop when it got cold. Before you gas up for the trip to the big pond to fish, ski or just drive around, you need to check a few things. First on the list should be life jackets -- how old are they and should they be replaced? The flotation material of life jackets has a lifespan of somewhere between 3 and 5 years from what I have read. Do you remember when you got them? If not it might be time to get new ones. Next on the list is a “throw cushion.” You should look at this the same as a life jacket. What about rope? Do you have enough to tow a boat? Next are the usual suspects such as charged batteries with clean terminals, first aid kit, and a small bottle of outboard motor oil. Yep, a 1 quart bottle of oil just in case you don’t fill the tank before you get out there and need some to get you back (and don’t say you have never been in that position). And to round out all this checking you’re doing is a good once-over of the motor, with special attention to the lower unit. Check that for leaks and make sure the lower unit oil is not old as dirt and there are no metal shavings in it. If you do a little work at the start of the season, it can save you some headaches later.

Dragon Boat Races and Festivals date back thousands of years with their beginning in China. Because the sport is such a spectacle, it attracts guests of all ages, visiting dragon boat teams, friends and families. Last year being the inaugural attracted over 3,000 to Bringle Lake Texarkana. With 14 teams racing it was exciting, but

this year will have 24+ teams so the excitement is over the top. Each team consists of 20 paddlers with a steersperson and a drummer to guide and direct. Business groups, high schools and first responders are competing on April 29 for the 2nd annual Texarkana Dragon Boat Festival. Whether a team member
