Magic of an Opportunity

The Likins Family understands exactly what correspondent Gustafson meant by the magic of a lane because together they live that magic almost every month of the year. The boys—Owen, 10; Evan, 9; Eli, 7; and Max, 5—all swim while mom, Susan, and dad, Scott, provide the invaluable support which makes not only the swimming but all the boys’ activities possible. They are an exceptionally active bunch who (they will quickly tell you) enjoy all the activities in which they participate. For starters, all the boys now attend TISD’s Martha and Josh Morriss Mathematics and Engineering Elementary School. Owen sets an excellent example for the others with his work in social studies and reading in the fifth grade; Evan favors the animal science lessons in his third grade classroom; Eli is just getting underway in the first grade and already enjoys engineering, while Max currently prefers spending time on the playground to launching an academic career in kindergarten. Clearly, these boys are learning early how to think for themselves. That is not surprising, as the lives of Dr. Scott and Susan Likins revolve around their boys. Scott, a graduate of OSU and Kansas State, is a small animals veterinarian on the staff of Wisdom Animal Clinic while Susan multi-tasks with on-site and at home curriculum writing for First Baptist Church, Moores Lane. “This is a perfect job,” she observes, as she manages to find time for both her church and her home responsibilities. Since her washing machine never stops, and her growing boys eat all the time, she always has many jobs to complete. So far, the Likins really sound “normal” for a growing family of four busy boys, but they are unusual, and it all started with Susan. Several years ago Susan discovered the announcement of a triathlon she thought Owen might enjoy entering; however, when she realized that he would not be able to compete because of his lack of swimming skills--that had to change. Her investigation led her to ATAC. SHARKATAC is the name of the Area Texarkana Aquatic Club, the USS (United States Swimming) year round competitive swim team “for all ages and abilities.” The team swims in the Texarkana College Pinkerton Center’s Pool, and the head coach is Eric Vogan, whose day job is dive coach for Texas High School’s swim team. USS swim teams welcome swimmers from ages 7 through 18 years old, and parents and volunteers play a crucial role in the swim team’s activities. Since the boys started, Susan now coaches a swim team. The SHARKATAC web page notes: “All of our coaches have access to the most comprehensive training and certification program by youth coaches of any sport in the United States. They provide assurances that the time children spend in swimming will be quality time. “…We are constantly growing and training young swimmers to maintain a well rounded competitive swim team.” Swimming in many ways is a paradoxical sport, i.e. many of its characteristics seem contradictory but they are, nonetheless, true. For example, swimming is a highly individual sport yet much of a swimmer’s success depends on being part of a team. Although swimming fast is emphasized, success is often gauged by a swimmer’s best personal time which may not be fast at all. Getting “in the door” (things like making the team or mastering a stroke) for a swimmer is hard, but the hardest part is being prepared once the door has been opened. Records do not stand. Waiting in the next town, at the next meet, in the next lane may the person who will be better than you are. The earlier one begins to swim, the better, yet a person can swim from 1 to 101. Age limits for swimmers do not exist. Most importantly, “Any given lane at any given time is an opportunity. ‘Give me a lane, anywhere, anytime,’ one famous

swimmer used to say, ‘and I’ll aim for perfection.’” Owen and Evan understand that any lane represents an opportunity whether it is during a practice session or participating in the Junior Olympics. Owen practices five days a week for an hour and a half while Evan practices three days a week plus participation in the meets. Many of their meals and much of their homework are completed in their car as they travel from one location to another. To qualify for the Junior Olympics, the boys must swim in approved district swim meets. Some of the meets are judged by their times; others by place. There are two qualifying meets each year. Owen and Evan first qualified for the Junior Olympics in 2012. After qualifying, they traveled to Houston, Texas, the site for the 2012 Junior Olympics. Because he was older, Owen, 9, was eligible to swim in more events than Evan, then 8, but both boys proved themselves exceptional swimmers. Just note these achievements: Owen—GOLD in the 200M free relay; SILVER in the 200M medley relay 5th in the 200M freestyle (his favorite stroke) 7th in the 100M backstroke 9th 100M breast 11th 50M breast 10th 50M free 10th 100M free 11th 50M backstroke Evan: BRONZE in the 200M freestyle relay 17th in the 50M freestyle 11th 50M backstroke (his favorite stroke) 12th 50M breast 4th Medley relay Obviously, these boys not only had their “feet in the door” but also were able to take advantage of their opportunities. The magic worked. Susan’s enthusiasm is apparent: “As you can see the Junior Olympics were incredibly fun for our family!” This year both Owen and Evan have qualified at a qualifying meet in Paragould, Arkansas. So far Owen has qualified in two events, and Evan, in one. A proud mom explains, “We will have one more chance to qualify in other events at a meet this summer in Searcy, Arkansas, and we fully expect to qualify in several more events. The Junior Olympics this year will be held in late July-early August in Detroit, Michigan. Owen and Evan also swim as a part of team Arkansas at the Junior Olympics.” Swimming is not the only activity in which these boys engage. “Boys will be boys;” therefore, they also enjoy their animals: Evan’s two lizards—Rex and Steve-- occupy the biggest cage available. Their diet of mealworms, crickets, lettuce and carrots will provide them the energy to grow as long as 2 ½ feet. Cleaning the cage once a month is an item on Evan’s list of responsibilities. Eli enjoys his aquatic turtle which occasionally requires a live fish for fare. A half Mastiff/half Great Dane puppy has just joined the Likins Family, but its presence has yet to intimidate Mr. Pickles, the cat ruler of the household, or Tiger, the Yorkie. Dad Scott admits he has learned much more about some of these small animals than he thought he would ever need to know. Nonetheless, like Susan, he supports the activities the boys undertake whether swimming, soccer or baseball. “I’d just like the boys to have the opportunity to do whatever they want to try.” Both Susan and Scott do everything they possibly can to encourage and support their boys. Now, Eli and Max are also into swimming, and the four boys have even been a swim meet relay team. In spite of their similarities: striking blue eyes, shades of brown hair, and slender builds, they are different with minds of their own. Max, the youngest, likes the Razorbacks and cheese pizza; Eli February 2013

prefers the Texas Longhorns and chicken nuggets; Evan supports the Florida Gators and just likes food, while Owen favors OSU (like mom and dad) and steak. Cheeseburgers, however, are the real winners in the Likins household. “We are all really competitive,” Scott acknowledges, “We have family competitions for football and whoever wins gets to pick the treat for the weekend. Everything is a competition.” The boys have jobs to do but uniformly hate “cleaning.” When they have “squabbles” (a rare occurrence), they are assigned additional chores. “We are all cooperative,” the boys admit almost as one. “It’s really fun to do things together. We have fights but forgive each other.” When the family is not at the pool or some field, they are at church. “Our involvement in church is tied to the community,” Susan and Scott agree. “We now feel a part of this community, and we love Texarkana.” Both Scott and Susan teach church classes and the boys are involved in groups as well. Truly the Likins Family proves that the family who plays and prays together stays together. “We can turn any act into a family event. We just spend time with whatever they

When Debby Sutton, the theatre director for Pleasant Grove High School, first heard Ramin Karmiloo’s voice, she knew that somehow, some way, he had to come to Texarkana, Texas. This was no simple task as Ramin, an Iranianborn Canadian actor and musician, has a list of accolades and accomplishments that have led him to some of the most coveted roles on the stage today. Ramin didn’t grow up listening to musical theatre; in fact, Ramin remembers being inspired by Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers and Tragically Hip, and he wanted to be an actor. However, when he first heard Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, he knew that he had found a perfect marriage of music and stage. Ramin’s family moved to Toronto from Peterborough and after graduation, Ramin pursued a musical career. When he received an understudy role in Pirates of Penzance on the UK national tour, he showed up on the very first day and knew all of his lines. The producer seemed surprised that an understudy would put so much work into a role and started to spread the word of Ramin’s solid work ethic. “I just thought, ‘Why wouldn’t I know all my lines?’” Ramin says. “I would tell anyone who wants to pursue their dreams that you should take pride in your work. To get what you want, sacrifices have to be made.” The reputation led to roles such as Enjolras in Les Miserables, Raoul in Phantom of the Opera, Simon Zealots in Jesus Christ Superstar and Christopher Scott in Miss Saigon. In 2007, Ramin finally played his dream-role as Phantom on the West End in London. He brought new life into the character and portrayed him as a man with Asperger’s Syndrome. The break-out performance earned him a Theatregoers’ Choice Award Nomination for Best Actor in a Take Over Role. Then, he was asked to audition for a top-secret role. When he walked in, he was given sheet music and sang for musical theatre master, Andrew Lloyd Webber. When he walked out of the audition, he thought, “that sounded like a ‘Phantom’ song.” He soon learned that he would be originating the role of Phantom in Webber’s new sequel, Love Never Dies. His performances led to an Olivier Award nomination. He was also honored with the Best Actor title in both the Broadwayworld.com and Whatsonstage.com awards. Soon after, Ramin added two new roles to his long list of accomplishments. First, he was asked to play Phantom in the 25th anniversary of the production of Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall which was broadcast to cinemas around the world. He also played the role of Jean Valjean in the West End production of Les Miserables at Queen’s Theatre in London. “All my roles have been great parts to play,” Ramin says. “Each one was the favorite when I was playing it, but my greatest surprise was Valjean. I had dreamt about being Phantom, but I had no expectations as Valjean. I thought I would be terrible. However, I’ve learned never to let your ego get in the way of learning. Egos come out of insecurity and fear. Instead, never rest on your laurels and be open to grow.” While performing on the stage, Ramin also pursued his musical career. Influenced by folk bands such as Mumford and Sons, Winston

Marshall and The Avett Brothers, Ramin found himself drawn to the powerful lyrics and construction of modern bluegrass. He formed a band, the Sheytoons, and started writing and performing songs that moved away from traditional musical theatre. His new album, Human Heart, was released this year in the United States and combines his love of a broad spectrum of music. “I don’t want to insult the banjo by calling my music ‘bluegrass,’ Ramin says. “My new album is really a mix of adult contemporary pop music, but that kind of music has always spoken to my heart. What I’m doing right now is really a mix of the two, in fact my producer calls it ‘broadgrass.’ Perhaps we’ve coined a new genre.” When his national tour for his new album came to Chicago, Debby Sutton saw a way to finally meet the musician. She planned a birthday trip to the city and rounded out the tour with tickets to his performance where she thought she might get an audience. On the day of the concert, Debby and Denise Kaniss were walking past the theatre venue and stopped to read the postings on the door. Debby’s students, who were already fans of Ramin, asked her if Ramin’s big red tour bus was there, so she stepped around the corner to see. The tour bus was in the parking lot, and the second she put up her camera to snap a photo, Ramin stepped out of the building. “He waved and said, ‘Hey,’ and I waved and said, ‘Hi’ back to him. I was just going to go back to taking the photo, but he said, ‘Do I know you?’ Debby says. “I started laughing and said, ‘No, punkin,” but he kept asking, ‘Where do I know you from?’ and walked over. He could tell by my accent that I wasn’t from Chicago and when I told him where I was from he said, ‘I’ve always wanted to play in Texas, but I don’t know anyone.’ I laughed and said, ‘Well sweetie, this is your lucky day!’” Ramin was excited about the possibility of traveling to Texas and asked Debby to jot down her contact information in his planner.

Ramin asked her to stay afterwards to speak to him and she told him if they didn’t speak, then he should just email her. However, even in the packed lobby after the performance, Ramin found Debby and told her that he was coming to Texas. He had already cleared the trip to Texas with his manager. “Months later, even as we drove to Dallas to pick him up from the airport, I kept wondering if this was really happening,” Debby says. “However, every time a door closed, a window opened. Every time we were worried about funding, someone would call and say, ‘Hey, did you get all the money you needed?’ God’s hand was over the whole thing.” This past December, Debby met Ramin at the Dallas airport for a whirlwind ten days in Texas. Ramin performed at East View High School in Georgetown, Texas, Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas, and Pleasant Grove High School in Texarkana, Texas. “Some people might ask, ‘Why would you come to high schools? Why Texas?’ Ramin says. “My instincts just told me that there’s good people here, and the ten days I spent in Texas felt like I was visiting friends and family.” Not only did Ramin shoot a gun for the first time and try real East Texas barbeque, but he also offered master’s classes for students. “At first I was really nervous about the master’s classes,” Ramin says. “I’m not classically trained…I’ve never been to college, but it was a part of Debby’s terms and conditions, and I really enjoyed meeting the students. The kids have been as big of a help to my soul as I hope I’ve been to theirs. I just love hanging out and talking to them.” Ramin used his 16 years of vast experiences recording, acting, singing and song-writing to work with the students, answered questions they might have and divulged stories of the stage. “Not only has Ramin had an amazing career in a relatively short time, but his work ethic and attitude make him a great role

model for teenagers,” Debby Sutton says. “He’s worked hard, paid his dues and earned everything he has achieved. This is the kind of message we need to send to kids, not that anyone can become a celebrity overnight.” Ramin’s down-to-earth attitude and approachability surprised many of the students. “Talking to him is not like talking to a famous person,” Caleb Smith, a senior at Pleasant Grove High School says. “He always greets us with a ‘Hey man,’ and asks us about our day. I’ve learned so much from him in the master’s classes. He taught me that my stage acting will be so much better if I truly understand the lyrics and don’t just see them as lines to be memorized.” Ramin enjoyed his time in Texarkana so much that he is hoping to come back in early spring. Debby is currently looking for funding sponsorships that would allow not only for a big concert, but for more classes with students in the area high schools. Pending funding, Ramin is hoping to bring some more of his West End co-stars with him to give music, acting and singing master’s classes. “Having him here was one of the most amazing experiences of my career,” Debby says. “We keep talking about how it all worked out, but I know that everything happens for a reason.” If you are interested in funding sponsorships, please contact Debby Sutton at dsutton@pgisd.net or at (903) 832-8005. ______________________ Ramin not only spent time touring and helping students, but he had a lot of fun while he was here in Texas! From performing with local students, to playing paintball at night, Ramin’s personality kept everyone who met him laughing! According to Sam Clem, a visit to Running WJ Ranch for a photoshoot made a huge impact on Ramin. One of the children took him by the hand, told him his name, and Ramin was surprised that his own son had the same name - even spelled the same, and was the same age. Ramin helped the young boy with his new shoes (pictured at left) and jacket and God showed up and melted Ramin’s heart. According to Ramin, his life is different because Christ used a little child to reach up and take his finger. We look forward to Ramin’s next visit!

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC January 2013 celebrates 125 years of exploring our magnificent planet. Yet Editor Chris Johns hastens to emphasize that exploration is as near as our backyards and “can be profoundly life affirming.” No one in Texarkana’s backyard can be more aware of the power of exploration and discovery than Dr. David Whitten and his wife Susan. Education and experiences have taught them the profoundly life affirming possibilities of exploring, and they share their discoveries at Texarkana’s new Beauty and Wellness Center. These two explorers, although coming from different directions, have managed to arrive in the same backyard using the same compass—a compass whose directions are comprised of attitude, eclecticism and empowerment. Dr. David Whitten is a native of Bearden, AR, but left his backyard early to begin his exploration. During some 30+ years, he earned degrees from Harvard University and University of California San Francisco and established himself “as an internationally published author, speaker, scientist, university professor and medical doctor.” Eventually he realized he was the only member of his family west of Texas, so he returned to Dallas where he continued his practice of Emergency Medicine. Meanwhile, he would travel through Texarkana on his way to visit his mom in Bearden, AR, occasionally stopping to check on his brother, sister and nephews. David compares, “I’m kinda’ like the hired hand in Frost’s poem ‘The Death of the Hired Hand,’ ‘Home is the place where, when you have to go there,/They have to take you in.” He was welcomed. David’s visits became even more frequent after he met a smart, vivacious, attractive go-getter—Susan-whose interests in literature and music aroused his own interests. Susan had recently moved from East Tennessee to Texarkana with her teen-age sons, Parker and Scott. Since she had been a year-round camp director in the Lookout Mountain area near Chattanooga,TN, she enjoyed the outdoors and campfires; her world placed a high value on exploration. David was smitten and so was Susan. The two soon decided to become a family, and their wedding sealed the deal. Now, Dr. and Mrs. David Whitten realized they had found a place they could call “home,” and in doing so had found new lives. David, after spending most of his career dealing with life and death medicine, had become interested in what keeps men and women young and vital. He recognizes “The old woman who looks in the mirror and says, ‘Old woman, how did you get there?’” He is seeking to find the answer. To their surprise, David and Susan agreed that they

already shared more interests and ideas than they realized. Their explorations had led them both to believe in two major results of a life lived with curiosity and enthusiasm, regardless of age: Beauty and Wellness. Their definitions explain their philosophy: “Beauty An assemblage of graces pleasing to the eye, the ear, the intellect, the aesthetic faculty or the moral state. “AND Wellness: The state or condition of being well; virtue is essential to the well being spiritually, mentally, and it is mentally required for health.” The three keys essential to opening the doors to Beauty and Wellness for a lifetime are primarily attitude, eclecticism and empowerment. No more valid proof can be found than in the persons of Susan and David. Susan radiates happiness. Her smile comes quickly and often as she notes that beauty and wellness depend largely on attitude, and attitude is primarily a choice. “Life should be a party, “ she declares.” We should celebrate today rather than ‘Do I

“have” to go to work today?’” She explains how her dad used to be perplexed by so many negative folks in church, since they were confident about what was ahead for them. Her smile dims a bit, as she recalls that the day before the holiday open house for their business (The Beauty and Wellness Center) she was also dealing with a Christmas Wine Extravaganza dinner for 50 people in their home, and planning a Christmas party for their office the following week—a full page on anyone’s “To Do” list. Susan and David managed to touch base with a planned visit to a holiday open house at a local business they wanted to support. David retrieved a piece of trash from the parking lot. As he was walking across to Wendy’s to throw it away, he was struck by a rapidly moving vehicle and spun into the air. Fortunately, his only major injury was a blown out knee that has required the support of a knee brace and a future surgery. “David has no quit in him,” Susan admiringly declares. He chose to endure, so, in spite of

the accident, all of their activities occurred as planned. “We are promised tribulation and pain,” David quickly intervenes. “Some try drugs; I try choice—Like Voltaire, I choose to be happy. As a physician, I am familiar with people’s making choices. We all face despair, but some people choose to live in despair and misery. There is too much dragging us down.” “David has just removed the knee brace,” Susan adds. Physician David indicates the move, one he chose to make, is not without some discomfort; however, he has chosen to pursue an alternative that works for him. As David and Susan choose to live their emerging philosophy, they serve as excellent models. Their commitment and mutual support make it appear easier than it is, but they rely heavily on their second key, eclecticism, i.e. the breadth of their combined “knowledges”—medicine, science, literature, art, music, wine, travel, camping, parenting, philosphy, psychology—and those areas of learning just begin their substantial lists. They are constant learners—their choices—and they use what they have learned to make their own lives richer. David and Susan Whitten are “Pushing their own limits,” and their discoveries are, as NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC’S 125 years prove, allowing them “to sing their own sonnet to life and to the courage to go on living it.” For example, when I arrived for our appointment, the two (and both of them often work together) were finishing up their session with a patient. Clearly audible through the closed doors was laughter— frequent and sustained. I was even led to chuckle myself, and all I knew was they were laughing. As we talked, David and Susan both affirmed the scientific benefits of laughter. Dr. David cited the emerging studies of laughter’s health benefits (gelotology) reported in the NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE. Norman Cousins, Editor and Writer, was one of the first to document the curative effects of laughter which David pointed out can include not only a reduction in stress, memory, learning and some diseases but also produces healthy changes in DNA. “I‘ve chosen to be happy,” David declares, ‘because it’s good for my health.” Susan’s head nods in agreement, and they laugh together. But their pasts are still a part of their present. Even in Texarkana, Dr. Whitten continues to practice Emergency Medicine in the Christus St. Michael Health System ER. “As an ER doctor,” he explains, “I can see seven or eight people who choose to be miserable, and I am exhausted after working with them.” Susan adds, “I remember when I was a church camp director, and I sometimes February 2013

had to teach people how to play. It was work.” Certainly, their sense of joy was virtually non-existent. “Life is so complex and so beautiful, and life and death are so inextricably intertwined,” David continues. “God has given us the ability to appreciate beauty and order, art and music, as well as the faculty to have emotional and physical experiences—to know happiness and grief and cold when we jump into a swimming pool or the heat of a hot tub. Regardless of what a person’s philosophical content might be, the spiritual element is a part of the fabric of each of us and our celebration of life.” “This is not a house of worship,” Susan explains about their business, “but we know and believe in an all-knowing, loving, powerful living God. We try to meet people where they are and help them to be happy.” Thus, the third key to their opening the doors: empowerment. Their philosophical journey is basically a desire to improve lives—their own as well as those patients, men or women, with whom they are privileged to work. For that reason, understanding that their business is a mirror of their own lives is imperative. As they have been empowered to make positive choices for their happy lives, their choices are being shared in a multiplicity of ways: The Beauty and Wellness Center offers a variety of weight loss programs, suture suspension (the traditional lift replacement), body

contouring, and programs dealing with fat and collagen issues. They are all designed to enhance the Beauty and Wellness of their clients. As Sherrie Davison, Office Manager, has noted, “We believe in what we do and want to make a difference. It’s about a better, healthier you.”

“A better, healthier you” the goal of Susan and David Whitten is also pursued from a totally different direction. While working on his Ph.D. at UC San Francisco, David became acquainted with wine for the first time and came into contact with

Salvatore Lucia, Professor of Epidemiology. Dr. Lucia was an early proponent of wine as healthy, contributing to longevity and freedom from certain diseases. Since his introduction to wine, David Whitten has been consumed by the very beverage whose consumption he has learned to enjoy and appreciate. Susan joins him in this appreciation. David laughs as he recalls: “God loving Ben Franklin said wine is constant proof God loves us and wants us to be happy. And “Thomas Jefferson is credited with bringing to our shores the vinifera (genus) grape. ‘I have done a greater service,’ Jefferson said, to this country by bringing these grape vines here than paying off the national debt.’” The laughter persists as Susan adds the story (and they both enjoy stories) about her cousin, a Catholic priest who has resigned the priesthood, relocated to North Carolina (Sheriff Andy Taylor territory) and is currently engaged in production of high proof spirits and wine. He may soon be writing a book FROM MONK TO MOONSHINE. No laugh track needed here. The laughter is all genuine. “I was even a minor owner in a winery in CA (Ridge Winery) while I was a grad student, “ David remembers. “But I have realized that owning a winery means drinking mostly your own. You have to get familiar with your own kitchen. My tastes are so eclectic I don’t want to limit myself, and I also don’t want to profit directly from the sale

of wine.” In fact he and Susan attempt to maintain “a positive wine balance,” which means they are buying more wine than they are drinking so they have wine to give away. “I get real pleasure from gifting birth year wine. There is a great joy in the look on a recipient’s face when that birth year wine is received. I even have had a 1925 Madera to give to my mom on her 90th birthday.” Both of the Whittens thoroughly enjoy reading wine labels, too, as the labels “tell the stories” of the wines. As one might expect, David has become a student of wine. When his studies revealed so much bias in the writing about wine, he and Martin R. Lipp, M.D. from UC San Francisco wrote a book TO YOUR HEALTH! / TWO PHYSICIANS EXPLORE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF WINE. “We, the authors, have done our best to base our conclusions on medical facts as we understand them,” they wrote. Within the book’s pages they plead for not only learning about wine but also common sense in its consumption, especially as it pertains to children. (The book is available on Amazon.) “When the book was reviewed in the NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE,” David coyly admits, “I knew it would not be a commercial success.” It may not have made the NY TIMES Best Seller List, but it was published in the US, Italy, and China, and even though it was published in 1994 it is still available. David became an international speaker on wine, health and

wellness largely because of the book, and his enthusiasm for wine remains evident. So what do these two busy people do in their spare time? Both of them manage to follow their hearts. Susan still heads outside. Their three-tiered deck proves the perfect place to enjoy “kinda’ porch things.” She even starts a campfire whenever possible and relishes bringing David up-tospeed culturally. That may mean introducing him to movies like “The Ghost and Mr. Chicken” starring Don Knotts; the 80s film, “Broadcast News or any movie with John Wayne in it.” David enjoys the dogs, woodworking, carpentry (he completely remodeled one of his homes) and plays some golf charity events. They both enjoy music concerts (David once drove from Dallas to Texarkana to pick up Susan and returned to Winstar, outside Dallas, for a Vince Gill concert). They “love” the Texas Rangers and have been Dallas Cowboys Season Ticket Holders for a long while. So…how does all of this fit together as the Doctor and the Maiden join forces to work closely together in their business? Susan quickly explains, “I feel like a camp director again. I just keep things moving.” David adds, “What you really are is Assistant Director, CEO. I greatly benefit from having Susan in the business. I find her contributions stimulating, and she is a superb assistant.” “Thank-you.” Susan accepts his compliment, then adds, “We have fun, but

My David and Dr. Whitten are not the same person. I sometimes have to remind him.” “Doctors sometimes speak matter of factly—scientifically. She allows me to be that way. She hears emotionally.” “One day he hurt my feelings in a consultation we did together. Afterwards I closed his office door and told him I needed clarification of what he just said. I walked over to his chair, knelt and took his hand: ‘I have to talk to my medical director.’” Talk concluded. Problem resolved. The two agree that they must be on the same page in the business, and that is not possible unless they are on the same page in their lives. They know that, and they live that. “It’s never too late to live happily ever after,” Susan’s Christmas plaque to David reads. “I want people to know this beautiful man. I want to share this beautiful man with others. Texarkana needs to know him.” “What happened in the past does not define you,” David concludes. “Life is about being different, focusing as we go.” Norman Cousins observed that inevitably an individual is measured by his or her largest concerns. The largest concerns of Dr. David and Susan Whitten revolve around making this tumultuous world a better place—one person at a time—and, like all successful explorers, they are “Pushing the Limits” right in Texarkana’s backyard.

November 25, 2012 TRAHC’s Cabe Hall - Texarkana, TX How They Met... David and Pamela met at a local Texarkana restaurant, while out with friends, in the Spring of 2009. David was excited about the opening of his new bar and grill that was planned for later that Spring. The two discussed the logo for the bar and talked about an artistic design for Dave’s business. Later that year, Pamela went to lunch with some friends at Dave’s new business, Hopkins Icehouse. David pulled a chair up at Pamela’s table and has never left her side since that day! The two became good friends and spent a lot of time together. They enjoyed being active in the community, attending various events, playing tennis and enjoying time with their children. Pamela says, “Most of all, we enjoyed each other’s company as we were falling in love.”

The Proposal... Two-and-a-half years flew by, and David and Pamela found themselves on vacation in Cabo San Lucas, in December of 2011. One beautiful, sunny afternoon, the couple had scheduled a parasailing trip. Pamela remembers, “David and I went up together. Neither of us had ever parasailed, and it was such an awesome experience! When we were up in the air, overlooking Lover’s Beach and the arch, David asked for my hand, and while slipping a ring on my finger, asked me to be his wife. I can’t believe the ring didn’t get dropped. It was a crazy proposal, and of course, I said yes!”

Amy and Hunter Amy Osborne to Hunter Mustain

September 29, 2012 Garrison Gardens - Texarkana, AR How They Met... Hunter and Amy met when Hunter’s parents built a house next door to Amy’s parents’ house. Amy was 15 at the time and Hunter was 14. When Amy turned 16, Hunter asked if he could ride to school with her in, since they both went to Arkansas High. It was then that the crushes started to develop, but nothing ever played out. It wasn’t until many years later, when Hunter and Amy were reunited by a comment on a Facebook picture, that the two were finally ready to do something about their long lost crushes. Hunter was still living in Texarkana, but Amy had moved away to College Station, Texas. After two years of talking back and forth on the phone, texting and really getting to know one another, Hunter and Amy knew they just had to be together. It was then that Amy knew it was time to move back home and be with the one her heart was longing for! Amy moved back to Texarkana in April of 2011, and Hunter and she became inseparable! Amy says, “Hunter and I are best friends! Everyone searches for their one true love, and God has blessed me with mine!”

The Proposal... The proposal happened November 5, 2011, which is also the week of Hunter’s birthday! Each day of his birthday week, Amy gave Hunter a gift leading up to that weekend when they were going to be in Fayetteville for the Razorback game. Some friends had invited the couple up to watch the game in a big 20-person suite for Hunters birthday; little did Amy know, a plan was already set! Amy remembers, “We did everything we usually do when we visit Chase and Catherine. Nothing was out of sorts. The game started like normal. It was against South Carolina, and we were winning! At half time, Hunter suggested taking a walk to stretch my legs out. We left the suite and walked around, and Hunter began telling me how much he loved me and how lucky he is. I did not think anything of this because he tells me those things everyday! It wasn’t until he stopped, got down on one knee, open the box and said, “How would you like to wear this for the rest of your life? Amy, will you marry me?” I was so shocked! I had absolutely no idea whatsoever! I cried and said, “yes,” and people around us cheered and clapped as they watched! It was perfect, and I will never forget it!”

The Wedding... The couple originally wanted to do a destination wedding, but when that did not work out, it was already late into the engagement, and Amy began to worry! When Amy and her mother began looking for wedding venues, they were not having any luck at all. However, as soon as Amy stepped foot onto the property Garrison Gardens, she knew that it was the perfect place! Amy says, “I was so overwhelmed by the Gardens’ natural beauty. There was only one weekend left, so we took it! There was a chance of rain on our wedding day, and I barely got any sleep because I was so worried about not being able to have the outside wedding like I wanted. When I woke up that morning, my matron of honor gave me a letter my groom had written me. It was the most beautiful letter I had ever received. That letter made me forget about everything and just enjoy the day. The rain held off long enough for us to have our wedding outside. Everyone says rain on your wedding day is good luck, and I believe it! Everything about our day was perfect, and I could not ask for anything better. We loved every minute! Hunter and I want to thank our parents and everyone involved for helping make our wedding day one to remember!”

How They Met... After moving home from college to begin cosmetology school and pursue her dreams and passion of becoming a hairstylist, Morgan was not looking for a boyfriend. One day out of the blue, Morgan’s cousin told her she had someone she wanted Morgan to meet. She had also told this guy, Joseph, about Morgan, and she encouraged him to find her on facebook. Morgan says, “I knew of Joseph, but I had never actually met him. My cousin insisted that we would be the perfect match and said we had to meet. He ended up sending me a message on Facebook, and we made small talk. Then, I gave him my number, and we started texting and calling each other daily. Joseph was so unbelievably nice and respectful, and I actually told him that he could stop the “sweet talk!” He assured me, though, that he was serious, and he was raised to be nice and respectful to women.” The two decided to meet on September 23, 2011. Morgan went to Joseph’s moms’ house with some of their mutual friends to hang out. Instantly, Morgan knew he was a keeper! Morgan can still remember the instant

attraction between her and Joseph. She says, “He caught my eye with his hilarious personality and great sense of humor, and he is quite the entertainer. He was always so sweet and respectful and compassionate. I couldn’t believe I had met someone so perfect for me! We truly are best friends. There was never a doubt in either of our minds that we fell in love instantly. Joseph spoils me to death! He is a true provider and treats me like a queen 100% of the time. We balance each other out in the most perfect ways. Even through struggles in our relationship, we have always made it because we fell in love when neither of us were looking for it, and we are truly meant to be!”

The Proposal... Secretly, Joseph asked Morgan’s parents for her hand in marriage. He picked out the perfect ring and had everything ready to propose to her the traditional way. Joseph had planned on proposing in front of a huge crowd, but he decided it should be a personal, special moment between Morgan

and him. On January 23, 2012, Joseph picked Morgan up from school, and they went to Morgan’s parents’ house, just as they did most days. Morgan noticed Joseph was very quiet all afternoon, and after a while he asked her to go downstairs and get him a glass of water. When Morgan came back upstairs, she opened the door but didn’t see Joseph. She looked behind the door, and there he was, on one knee. Morgan almost dropped the glass of water she was holding! Morgan remembers, “He said, “Morgan Leigh Brinkley, will you marry me?” I started crying and said yes probably 10 times! Then, he told me to put down the glass and we hugged each other, and I remember realizing I hadn’t even looked at the ring! It was perfect and so personal, and that’s what meant so much to me. He told me he wanted our wedding to be exactly how I wanted it, and we both went to my grandfather to ask him to marry us and to give us his blessing, which was so important to me.

Research... My friend Vicki brought her son in just last week to talk to me. He wanted to ask some questions about a dog for him. He already knew what he wanted, which put him ahead. He said if he could rescue one, he would, but he was definitely sure he wanted a German Shepherd. I began contacting all my friends that have rescues. No one knew of any that were available. At this point we ventured out. I started looking for reputable breeders that I knew. What? No one had puppies for sale or adults to “pet out.” What to do, what to do. I The very loved and spoiled Zsa Zsa! kept looking. I have to give the young man this -- he knew what he wanted and had done his research. He was willing to rescue one, but since we

couldn’t find one in rescue he held out waiting. He asked about the behavior of the breed and was aware of the particular needs this breed might encounter. We discussed training and housebreaking, food types and genetic disorders and socialization. Is there a breed you have had your eye on, or are you confused about how to select a dog? In either case, you should do some homework to make sure that you select the right dog for you and your family. The bonus of selecting a purebred dog is their predictability in size, coat, care requirements and temperament. Knowing what your puppy will look like and the kind of care he will need as an adult is a key in selecting the breed for you. However, if you adopt an adult, you don’t have to go through the puppy stages. Vicki told me that we had to find the right fit because they definitely don’t change dogs every 6 months. (I love that about her!) When they have a pet it becomes a family member. Bradley was willing to be responsible as a pet owner. I saw this. I know from the way she loves little Zsa Zsa this was a pet loving family and she had definitely raised this young man properly. The end of this story is Faith, a female German Shepherd was found. I’ve seen her photos. She is beautiful. I cant wait to meet her! The moral to this short story is responsible ownership. He knew what he wanted and researched his breed to make sure it was for him. He looked into rescue first but this was the breed he was set on. There were none in rescue. It’s a family member so make sure it’s a fit. Do your research don’t just adopt or buy because its cute or pretty. There are lots of babies out there. Find the one that’s right for you if you haven’t. Just a little end note -- Henry is still looking for his forever home. His “fit” hasn’t been found yet. He is the most loving little dog. Please consider him or another with the Texarkana Humane Society. Your first step is to fill out their application on their website -- texarkanahumanesociety. com. A new dog waits to love you! Henry is neutered, chipped, current on vaccinations, potty trained and is heartworm negative. He weighs a whopping 15.2 pounds. This little guy has lots of love to share. The first time Matt and Tiffany met was right before Christmas of 2011. “This meeting had been postponed a number of times because she kept standing me up, at least that was what I thought,” Matt says. “I kept pacing by the window anxiously awaiting her arrival. Finally, I saw her pull in my driveway. It was like the earth stood still. She came through the door, sat down and we chatted for about thirty minutes. I could tell Tiffany was uneasy, so I thought it would be good if we got out of the house to go do something together. I asked her if she would want to go with me to finish my last minute Christmas shopping, but to my surprise, she told me she would pass! My heart sank! I was crushed inside!” Tiffany told Matt she wouldn’t keep him from his shopping, and on she went! Matt thought he must have done something wrong, so he called a friend and told him everything. Matt was convinced Tiffany hadn’t liked him, but his friend encouraged Matt to relax, saying Tiffany had probably just been nervous. Not a moment too soon, Matt received a text message from Tiffany, saying she was head over heels for him! She apologized for standing Matt up, before, and confirmed that she had been extremely nervous. Matt says, “From then on, our romance flourished like a wildfire. We were like a beautiful puzzle, and we both felt like God made us for one another. Her mother, Sandra Williamson, told me as soon as she heard my name she told Tiffany that I was the one. Tiffany has a six year old son, Damian, and we bonded quickly. Damian even told me I am his best friend! He looked up to me, and it made me feel special and strive to better myself to be a role model for him.” Toward the end of the year, Matt and Tiffany’s relationship hit some bumps in the road. Although they didn’t realize the problem at the time, the couple wasn’t putting God first in their relationship. They separated for over two and half months. “During that time apart, the Lord spoke to both our hearts,” Matt says. “We both knew God had a plan for us and that He was in control. After days of seeking the Lord, we were together once again, this time with our foundation in Christ! I’ve always felt the Lord telling me, “This is your wife.” I couldn’t bear it any longer. Every time I prayed, God brought Tiffany to me. One time, during a Wednesday night church service, I prayed that if I saw her, this time I would hug her tight. At the end of the service, I was walking out towards the parking lot and realized I had left my keys in the sanctuary. On my way back out, our paths crossed, and I wrapped Tiffany so tight in my arms and cried tears of joy because I knew God answered my prayer. Our special song is Dave Barnes’ “God Gave Me You.”

Proposal... Matt knew he needed Tiffany like he needed the air to breathe, so he got in his truck and sped to her mother’s house. Tiffany was arranging things around in her bedroom when Matt, unexpectedly, dropped to one knee with a ring in his hand and asked her to marry him. Tiffany agreed, making Matt the happiest man in the world! Matt says, “I’m so excited for what the Lord has in store for our family in the future! I want our story to be a testimony for Christ. I love my wife and Damian!”

How They Met... Alexandra says, “We met during Johnathan’s junior year and my sophomore year in high school. We were in the same Algebra II class, and he sat right behind me. We went on our first “date,” after he graduated high school in 2005, to go mudding for his 18th birthday. On our second date, we went to the drag strip in Gillam, LA with his entire family. He “asked me to be his girlfriend” on July 30, 2005. I would say the rest is history, but then Johnathan moved off to Houston to attend Universal Technical Institute to become a mechanic. We dated the entire two-anda-half years he was there, and finally, he moved home. We were living in the same town for about a year until I moved to Conway, AR to attend Occupational Therapy school at the University of Central Arkansas. I was there for three-and-a-half years before finally moving home for good! We aren’t sure if there is a specific moment in our relationship that we can pinpoint as the moment we “fell in love,” but I think we always knew. He proposed just ten days shy of our seven year anniversary on July 20, 2011, in Las Vegas, creating a very memorable story…”

The Proposal... Alexandra remembers, “We were on a family vacation with his family, staying at the Bellagio Hotel, the one with the AMAZING fountain show that you see advertised for Las Vegas. I had been bugging Johnathan, for about a year, about getting married. Everyone had just put their bags in the rooms when Johnathan decided that we needed to watch the fountain show. The casinos were on the way to the fountains, and everyone agreed to stop there first since the fountains weren’t going anywhere; Everyone, that is, but Johnathan. He was dead set on going to the fountain show right then and there, so off we all went! We found a place that we would be able to see the show, and Johnathan was on my left. Once the fountain show began, my heart sank. I had been telling him for months that we were staying at the Bellagio, and he would never get a more perfect opportunity to propose in such a way that we would never forget. His response was always “I am not ready to get married.” With my sunglasses on, I choked back tears and tried to enjoy a beautiful water display. I couldn’t help but be a little angry and hurt; I mean really! It had been seven years since we started talking. Before I tell you what happened next, you should know that Johnathan and his dad are always joking with me about everything, and they are really good at it. As we were watching the show, Johnathan grabbed my arm and said “Baby, I have something I want to tell you.” If I hadn’t had had my sunglasses on, I am afraid the look I gave him might have killed him, let alone the mean things I was thinking in my head! I responded, “Quit being a jerk. I am trying to watch the show!” I turned my attention back to the water display and thought I had gotten my point across. Well, I felt his arm force me to look at him. He grabbed the sunglasses from my face and handed them to his dad. As soon as his dad grabbed my sunglasses, Johnathan dropped to one knee. I immediately lost all sense of reality, and I can’t tell you, to this day what he said. He told me later that he was so nervous to actually go through with it because he didn’t realize that there would be so many people around us when he did it. We had quite an audience, all coaching me to “say yes” or “marry him!” I can now say that the rest is history, and we got married almost exactly one year later.” Alexandra says, “Valentine’s Day will mark 7 months since the day we stood in Wren Hall at Sugar Hill United Methodist Church and said “‘In the name of God, I take you, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish until we are parted by death. This is my solemn vow.’ We are going for GOLD (only 49 years and 5 months to go)!”

Another Milestone...

hen February arrives I always have a “mountain” of personal history to muse over. First, my birthday is in February. More importantly, (just in case my sweet wife Peggy should read this,) my anniversary is in February. However, the event that really tugs at my aging brain is the fact that this February I will have been in the alcoholic beverage industry for 37 years. It doesn’t sound right. I must have started when I was 10 years old! Where did the time go? I feel like I just graduated from Edison High School (1969). A few years at the University of Arkansas, a stint in the retail appliance sales business and a brief encounter with the debit insurance business in Staten Island, New York -- that’s the extent of my resume’ until February 1976. It was my 24th birthday and I was starting a new job in a liquor store. Why? Because I needed a job. My first day in this phenomenal industry was laden with backbreaking work. I washed the ceiling of a disco lounge -- in those days, liquor stores had bars attached to them. I fussed and cussed the entire day (to myself, of course). How could a man of my vast experience be lowered to manual labor? However, I stuck it out and lived through the process. Next, I had to learn all of the prices in the weekly newspaper ad. The ad had 200 items in it and I had a week to memorize them. If I faltered I would have been let go. Then I had to learn the commission sheet. I don’t know why we needed a commission sheet. I was making a sizable $2.25 per hour. The commission sheet consisted of about 40 items that I had a rough time reading, let alone pronouncing! Chateau Du Cru Beaucaillou, $6.99, Chateau Pichon Longvielle, $5.99, and Graacher Himmelreich Auslese, $4.99. Was I supposed to be a linguist or a salesman? Any way, I got through it. Last but not least, I was given a copy of Alexis Bespaloff’s “The New Signet Book of Wine.” I was told to read the first 80 pages of the book and I would be tested in one week. After the first two trials, what could be so hard about 80 pages of a wine book? Besides, the guy who was administering the final test was not going to be invited to the next Mensa meeting. Incidentally, 3 weeks later, I was his boss. However, the part of this story that is the most ironic is the fact that I was hooked. The first 80 pages of that book were like an addictive drug. I could not stop reading it. Little did I know that the next 37 years of my life would be so dramatically influenced by that book. While Alexis Bespaloff’s book has been completely out of circulation for over 20 years, the basic information that I gleaned from those first 80 pages would propel my career to amazing heights. How else could a poor kid from Brooklyn, New York, via Edison, New Jersey, and Fayetteville, Arkansas, be hanging out with princes and princesses, movie stars, and politicos? I have smoked cigars and tasted wines in some of the finest vineyards in the world and consumed “vittles” produced by some of the world’s finest chefs. I’ve dug in the ground in Tuscany and picked some grapes in 4 different countries. I even had the honor 58

of producing wine in Italy. I’ve traveled millions of miles and taken part in many of the best wine and food programs. I’ve been honored to speak at seminars with world renowned wine experts and I have been fortunate to help judge wines at major wine events like the Epcot Wine Festival. I know, it sounds like I’m boasting about my accomplishments. I’m not! I’m amazed and still can’t believe this has actually happened to me. Every day, I thank God for the last 37 years and I ask him to be with me, my family and my dear friends and partners (Rodney, Linda, and Alan McDaniels) as we open a new book in our lives: The New “Vincent’s Fine Wine and Liquor.” After 37 years, I saved the best for last. I’m doing what I love. And, I’m really “hangin out” with the best people in the world! Thank you Texarkana! Amazing, it all started from that little paperback book.

How They Met... Cody and Kayla knew each other in high school, but it wasn’t until mutual friends set them up on a double date, a couple of years after graduating, that the two began dating. Kayla and Cody’s first date was a late night four wheeler ride. It was Kayla’s first time to experience “going mudding.”

One Day in History

Texarkana Museum System Ahern House 12-12-12 Wedding Event The year 2012 brought a rare and unique day – the calendar date of December 12, 2012 (12-12-12). Many glanced at this exclusive date and thought “interesting” while others aspired to commemorate the date with something significant. The Texarkana Museum System Organization looked at that date and recognized an opportunity to combine interesting and commemorative. The TMS Board sponsored an event of opening the doors of the historic Ahern House for walk in weddings for couples who selected that day to become husband and wife. Two couples who chose this event to be wed were Kathy and Ron Ritter of Texarkana, TX and Nettie and Michael Joslin of Coushatta, LA. Along with family members, celebrating with the couples were the Officiate of the day’s event, Virginia MaynardHudler of Tie The Knot Weddings, photographer, Jennifer Futrell, and Texarkana Museum System Curator, Jamie Simmons.

When Patience Beard takes the field as a spirited cheerleader for her beloved Razorbacks, the crowd usually notices her big smile and impressive flips and stunts. Not only is her team spirit infectious, but Patience’s true life story of overcoming adversity is spreading from all those who have seen the “cheerleader with the zebra leg.”

Patience Beard was born with proximal focal femoral deficiency and had her left foot amputated when she was only 8 months old. Even though she received her first prosthetic when she was 11 months old, this did not stop her from starting gymnastics classes at age 4. “My parents never did anything for me that I could do for myself,” Patience says. “They were very strong believers in a sense of humor with the whole situation which made me feel so much more comfortable about my leg growing up. Having my parents push me to do anything I wanted at such a young age is what has made me who I am today.”

While in high school, Patience was involved in student council and volunteered her time to causes such as the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and the Salvation Army Christmas Angel tree. Her fellow

“I enjoy being a cheerleader because you have to have a positive attitude and be very upbeat which is something I love to do,” Patience says. “It is a sport that takes a lot of hard work and is challenging, so it gives me something to work towards each day.”

This year, Patience was the first woman nominated for the Discover Orange Bowl-Football Writers Association of America Courage Award. Every year at the Orange Bowl, 12 athletes are nominated for the award, and this year all of the other nominees were football players.

“Growing up with the two older brothers was something that I believe made me so strong willed,” Patience says with a smile. “They definitely treated me as normal as possible and were still mean older brothers.”

“I had never faced so many people that thought I couldn’t do things for myself and it was very frustrating for me,” Patience says. “I was grateful for their offers to help, but doing things on my own was just who I am. I have always been very independent. I’ve had a few people in the last few years that will say, ‘Oh my! Your leg! I am so sorry!’ and it’s difficult for me to respond. I don’t think I deserve pity because I know that there are far worse circumstances than what I face.” When Patience started seventh grade, she decided to pursue her gymnastics interest and try out for the cheerleading squad. After auditioning and making the team, Patience cheered for the Tigers from

“I was shocked and so excited!” Patience says. “However, after tryouts I only had one week as part of the team before our first game. I got to the University for practice and could not believe that I was a part of this great organization. College cheer is more time consuming than high school cheer, so learning to manage my time was pretty difficult at first. Practices are harder, and the games are much more fun and intense, but I absolutely love it!” At the University, Patience follows the lead of her cheer sponsor, Mrs. Jean Nail, and her cheer coach, Kraig Jimenez. “Both Jean and Kraig have been so great to work with. I look up to both of them so much,” Patience says. “I couldn’t ask for a better team, coach or sponsor. This year has been absolutely amazing because of everyone involved with the cheer program.”

Patience grew up in Texarkana with her parents Michelle Kelley and Jimmy Beard. She has two older brothers, Zane and Zachry, a younger brother, Cash, and a younger sister, Presley Kelley.

However, there were still those who weren’t sure how to handle Patience’s differences. One day, Patience went fishing with some volunteers at a lake for a Scottish Rite event and was constantly asked if she needed help getting in and out of the boat or walking down the hill. These tasks seems simple to Patience who had been treated with normalcy her whole life.

I was very involved and to me that is a great accomplishment.” Choosing the University of Arkansas was an easy decision for Patience who had toured the school her junior year and fell in love with the campus and the overall atmosphere of the town. Choosing the school was easy, but Patience was nervous about trying out for cheerleader. She was

“Though I didn’t win the award, I was so honored to be nominated,” Patience says. “It was so inspiring to read all the nominees’ stories because everyone was so amazing! It was interesting to see all the different types of courage because when I look at myself I don’t think that I am being courageous, I just see myself as cheering on the Hogs and doing the things I love to do!” Even though she is only a freshman, Patience knows she wants to finish her major in communications and then become a motivational speaker in order to use her experiences to help and inspire others. “I could not imagine who I would be today if I had both of my legs,” Patience says. “It has made me a strong person and also very confident in each obstacle I face whether it’s with my disability or just everyday life. I thank God everyday for the opportunities I have been given and I know that in every situation that I have gone through He is right beside me. Knowing that He made me who I am to show His grace makes me feel so special and only makes me want to work harder for Him. February 2013

Will Working Longer Help--or Hinder--Your Social Security Benefit?

Continued earnings could increase your Social Security benefit depending on your situation. One thing is for sure: working part time at reduced pay will never cause your benefit to go down. A common question among people in their 60s is this: If I keep working, will my Social Security benefit go up? An even more common question is this: If I take a part-time job at a lower salary, will it cause my Social Security benefit to go down? To answer these questions, you need to have a basic understanding of how benefits are calculated. First, your benefit is based on your highest 35 years of earnings. When your primary insurance amount (PIA) is calculated at age 62, the Social Security Administration (SSA) tallies up all of your earnings as reported by your employers over the years (or as reported on your tax return if you are selfemployed). Each year’s earnings are multiplied by an indexing factor to adjust for inflation. For example, if a person born in 1946 earned the maximum taxable wage base of $9,000 per year in 1972, that year’s earnings would count for $48,763after adjusting for inflation. The highest 35 years of inflationadjusted

earnings are totaled and divided by 420 to come up with the Average Indexed Monthly Earnings, or AIME. The AIME is then multiplied by three different percentages (called “bend points”) to determine the primary insurance amount. These bend points are adjusted for inflation and are different for each age cohort. If you worked more than 35 years, the excess years would not be counted. If you worked fewer than 35 years, the missing years would be filled in with zeroes. So the question is this: what effect will additional earnings have on your earnings record for Social Security purposes? The answer depends on which category you fall into:

Here’s why: those early earnings, even though they are inflationadjusted for the AIME, still count for less than you may be earning today. Let’s face it. Any additional wages you might earn immediately before or after retirement would be valued mostly for the earnings

The Texarkana Humane Society is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to re-homing orphaned animals, promoting the human-animal bond, preventing animal cruelty, educating children and adults about responsible pet ownership and preventing pet overpopulation. In order to reduce the number of unwanted animals and the euthanization of them at the shelter people need to spay/neuter their pets. The Texarkana Humane Society has a program to help individuals do this and urge everyone to get involved and tell your neighbor, family, and friends to be responsible and do their part in putting a stop to this problem here in our city. The Texarkana Humane Society is always needing volunteers as well as foster homes. If you would like to get involved and lend a helping hand they would love to talk with you. They are also needing the following items to help with the care of all the babies that come into foster: Puppy and kitten chow, formula for the babies, animal baby bottles, as well as monetary or debit card donations. We have a big need for individuals who have the time to bottle feed some of these babies. It is so sad when we cannot take any in because we are full and would welcome a few more bottle moms. It is a great expereince as well as very rewarding taking care of these little ones. If you can help with donations or feeding call Sherrie at 903 838-6334. Volunteers who agree to provide a foster home for our strays are provided with medical care for the animals. The Humane Society pays for all immunizations and spays or neuters the animal.

Our goal is to place these animals in permanent homes with responsible, loving pet owners. All of our services are provided through private donations from our community.
