Traditions…
There are so many traditions that families observe – whether for holidays, celebrations, church or school, they become a part of our lives. My family has many that we celebrate each year, with more to come, I am sure. Things are changing in our family, and as I write this, I am sure my life will never be the same. One thing will never change though – the love I have for my family and friends. The Carlow family have been friends of ours for many years. Since pageant life began when Jaclyn was in high school, and Malori Carlow was also a “pageant girl,” becoming a part of their extended family was a natural. Malori, and Melinda (her mom), were a huge part of our life for many years as we helped Malori prepare for different competitions. As with many things, pageant prep become a thing of the past and Malori grew up and went away to college. Although I don’t see Melinda or Malori as often as I would like, I know they are still there – all I have to do is call their name. During that time, I met Ashley Carlow. Married to brothers, Ashley and Melinda supported each other and their children, but they had their own lives to lead. I was excited when Ashley decided to purchase Traditions, a wedding and formal boutique here in town. I knew she would do an amazing job with her attention to detail, flair for the styles of today, and fabulous personality. She has done just that -- so much that she has retired from teaching to be able to be a part of Traditions each and every day. It is such a joy to watch her and her staff, Lauren, Katie and Brooke, help customers find the perfect gown or tux. It’s all about customer service. Ashley once told me that she wanted to start a “tradition” of brides coming to her from all over the region to shop at Traditions because they knew they would have a huge selection, great service, and smiles from everyone involved. I know that is one tradition she will accomplish. It, indeed, has already begun. Start your own tradition today. Whether that is opening a business, gaining new friends, doing something different, you and your children will have memories that last. Even after you are gone, those memories will live on. May God bless you and yours…

STARTING A
Tradition‌
By Debbie Brower
From the time she was a small child, Ashley Carlow loved helping others. Growing up in Maud, Texas and graduating from high school there, she left the area to attend college. Starting at Texas A&M University in College Station, where she went for two years, and graduating from Texas Women’s University, Ashley chose to continue helping others by teaching. Elementary school was her choice and she absolutely thrived in that environment, loving returning to the place she graduated from, Maud, Texas. ALT-Mag.com | August 2017 015
During her tenure teaching elementary school, she and husband, Brad, had four children – Taylor, Shelby, Triston and Briley. Teaching and caring for her family became her passion. As her children grew up, her home was regularly ensconced with other young people, who came to visit, celebrate, relax. Many times, for different occasions, she would be known to have themed celebrations, sometimes in her home, sometimes outside by the pool. Creative ideas abounded and the participants loved it, creating memories to last a lifetime. It’s no wonder that when her daughter, Shelby, was engaged to be married, she was excited to start the journey to find

AMERICA’S BEST SUV BUMPER-TOBUMPER TRANSFERABLE WARRANTY
THIS YEAR, ON MAY 28, 2017, THE VOLKSWAGEN BRAND TURNED 80 YEARS OLD. HERE ARE A FEW FACTS YOU MAY NOT KNOW! Translated literally, Volkswagen means “people’s car” in German. This name was chosen because of the desire of the German government at the time for the everyday person to be able to own a car, rather than just the wealthy. At the end of World War II, the government wanted to put people back to work. They enlisted automaker Ferdinand Porsche (yes, that Porsche) to make “the people’s car.” The Bug was heavily influenced by Porsche’s V series. Volkswagen has more vehicles on the road with over 100,000 miles than any other brand. Our vehicles are still running when others quit. In fact, Volkswagen is the largest car maker worldwide.
6 YEARS/72,000 MILES LIMITED WARRANTY
We all love a big screen, and the all-new 2018 Volkswagen Atlas can be equipped with just that. The seven-passenger vehicle has an available 12.3-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit to display the information you want to get the most out of your drive. It features a high-resolution thinfilm transistor (TFT) display with 1440 x 540-pixel resolution. But the real beauty of this new display is that it lets you configure views to personalize the information you see.
WARRANTY: The bumper-to-bumper New Vehicle Limited Warranty for the 2018 Atlas and Tiguan runs for six years or 72,000 miles, whichever occurs first. The New Vehicle Limited Warranty is inclusive of powertrain components. Major SUV competitors to the Atlas and Tiguan offer shorter bumper-to-bumper warranties, typically three years or 36,000 miles, with additional powertrain coverage up to five years or 60,000 miles. Not only is the Volkswagen SUV bumper-to-bumper warranty longer than its competitors, all of its elements can be transferred to subsequent owners up to 6 years or 72,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
2018 Volkswagen
The Volkswagen Beetle is the longestproduced vehicle in history - for over 65 years. 65 YEARS! In that time, there were a total of 21,529,464 made. While most of them are found in Europe and Asia, a good percentage were probably bought up during the height of the Hippie-era.

JOYCE MILLER BEAUTY AND WELLNESS CENTER
Joyce was born in Louisiana, but she spent most of her childhood in Arizona and most of her adult life in Texas and Montana. She was always fascinated with healthcare and helping others, so she decided when she was 17 years old to get her cosmetology license through a high school program. At the time, she focused on hair, but her desire was to improve people’s knowledge of skincare. However, during the early 1970s, she found that there were few opportunities to do this. In her 20s, Joyce desired more for herself, and she decided to follow her passion to learn more about the medical field. She put herself through nursing school at Texarkana College and began her career as a registered nurse. “My goal for nursing was to educate others, make patients comfortable and just love on people and help them,” Joyce says. “I feel God equipped me with the skills to be a caregiver, and I always took this very seriously. I have always felt that nursing is a calling and not a job. I never once didn't want to go to work in my 38 year career as a nurse, and I have always been proud to be a part of the nursing profession.” Throughout all her years of nursing, Joyce kept up her cosmetology license knowing that one day she would return to her first passion of skincare and wellness. When she retired a year and a half ago, she met Dr. David and Susan Whitten from the Beauty and Wellness Center. She shared with them her desire to do facials and help others. “I feel that a great facial not only provides good skincare, but also a time of relaxation and the opportunity to de-stress and unwind, to be well. It's not just cream on, cream off. It's about my clients,” Joyce says. “It's important to me to meet the needs of others, and the Beauty and Wellness Center has provided me with this opportunity. My goal is to give my clients the best facial in Texarkana and offer great individualized skin care tips.” At this time in her life, Joyce feels that staying active is one of the best things she can do to stay healthy. She does this with her horse, French Fry. Her best wellness tips are to eat healthy, stay active, keep your mind active, protect your skin from the sun, and drink lots of water.

Patty Hackett Massage Therapist
Patty was born in Bossier City, Louisiana. She graduated from Liberty Eylau and then attended Texarkana College. Patty was a single mother to her daughter, Paige, and worked in the banking world for 25 years. However, with only one income, Patty knew she would need some extra money as her daughter reached driving age, so she decided to go to massage school and pursue her passion of massage therapy. The idea of massage therapy started when Patty was a little girl standing behind her dad, rubbing his shoulders as he drove. Now, she has 17 years of experience in massage therapy, and she holds licenses in Arkansas and Texas. She specializes in bamboo massage, sports massage, deep tissue and prenatal massage. “Benefits of a massage include increased blood supply and nutrition to the muscles and improved muscle tone. A massage also relaxes muscle spasms, relieves tension, stimulates lymph circulation and dilates blood vessels,” Patty says. “Massages do a body good. They are great stress relievers and give an overall feeling of relaxation and peace.”

In 2014, Patty learned about the Transformation (Weight Loss) Program at the Beauty and Wellness Center. She made an appointment with Dr. Whitten and made sure to bring along a list of the medications she was currently talking. She remembers Dr. Whitten asking her how much weight she wanted to lose, and her reply was, “Whatever it takes to get off this medication and be healthy!” After 5 months on the program, she lost 50 pounds, which was enough to get off of some of her medications and make a good start for the others. “By April of the next year, I had lost a total of 100 pounds,” Patty says. “During this time I also lost my mother and several others who were very important in my life. Without the monthly visits with Dr. Whitten and Susan, there is no telling how much weight I might have put on being a comfort eater. Dr. Whitten and Susan are not only concerned about the outside you but also your overall wellness.” The best advice Patty can give about staying healthy would be to stay focused on a plan for yourself with avenues for growth as your life changes. “Take time for yourself,” Patty says. “Eat clean and real food. Drink water. Pamper yourself and stay balanced in your life. Don’t ever be afraid to live your happily ever after.”

BRITTANY ACKLEY
CHRISTUS TRINITY CLINIC - FAMILY PRACTICE PHYSICIAN Dr. Brittany Ackley was born and raised in Paris, Texas, where her parents and family still reside. She attended college at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, and then went to medical school at American University of the Caribbean in St. Maarten. She most recently completed her residency in family medicine at UAMS Southwest in Texarkana in 2017. “I chose to go into medicine because I wanted to help people,” Ackley says. “I chose family medicine specifically because I enjoy taking care of kids, adults, as well as older adults. Getting to know and taking care of people at their most vulnerable moments when they are sick or hurting is truly a privilege. Being someone's family doctor is a precious responsibility that I take very seriously.” Brittany’s advice for staying healthy is to watch what you eat. “As difficult as it may be, making good food choices is key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” Ackley says. “Eating a diet full of lean protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are all good options. Also, it is recommended to get 30 minutes of moderate physical activity 5 days a week. Regular exercise can help improve blood pressure and diabetes control as well as help reduce fall risk in older adults.” 024 ALT Magazine | August 2017
BENJAMIN DUBOIS
CHRISTUS TRINITY CLINIC - GENERAL SURGEON/ MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF THE SURGICAL QUALITY IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM WITH CHRISTUS ST. MICHAEL Dr. Benjamin DuBois is a Christian, a husband, a dad, a son, a brother, and a surgeon. He was born in Monticello, Arkansas, but his family moved to Texarkana when he was about 3 months old, and he was raised here. “I have been blessed to have an awesome family growing up. My mom worked at Texarkana College, my dad worked in sales, and they always seemed to be working day and night,” DuBois says. “I have two older brothers that I have always looked up to who are now dads and husbands and successful businessmen. Our parents always encouraged us to work hard at everything we do, especially our education.” DuBois graduated from Pleasant Grove in 1998 and then decided to pursue his career in medicine. He attended the University of Texas at Austin and then medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and General Surgery Training at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center Memphis. He was also trained in trauma surgery and critical care. While in Memphis, DuBois also married “the love of his life,” also from Texarkana. Then, DuBois wanted to learn more and entered into a fellowship for minimally invasive and endoscopic surgeries at the University of Texas Health Science in Houston for one year. “It was in Houston that my beautiful wife and I started our family and we now have two incredible and inspiring daughters who keep us busy,” DuBois says. “After Houston, I realized I had been in school and training for way too long, it was time to get a real job, so in 2012 we came back home to Texarkana to raise our family and be a part of this great community again.” His best advice for staying healthy is to join a church, and find God. DuBois also recommends having a positive attitude, eating right, and exercising four times a week. He also suggests getting a primary doctor, nurse practitioner or physician assistant and working with them on plan to either maintain your health or strive towards better health. “Do what they tell you to do because they care for you and want you to be as healthy as you can be,” DuBois says. “If you don’t think you can do what they tell you to, you need to share with them your barriers so they can work on solutions to making things happen. Understand that you have to work hard to maintain a healthy life but the work is rewarding.” 026 ALT Magazine | August 2017

HESHAM HAZIN
CHRISTUS ST. MICHAEL ONCOLOGY CLINIC/MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF THE W. TEMPLE WEBBER CANCER CENTER AT CHRISTUS ST. MICHAEL Dr. Hesham Hazin was born and raised in NY/NJ Metropolitan Area to a family of immigrants from Jerusalem, and he is the fifth of six children. Having immigrants as parents as well as growing up in the New York City area, Hazin was raised with a very serious work ethic. As a teenager, his summers were spent working in Manhattan, where to make it and be successful, you really have to hustle. “In our family, there was no sitting around doing nothing, so I have been working since the age of 16. Hard work was expected out of us and in that way, my life has not changed,” Hazin says. “I continue to work very hard and it feels foreign to me if I'm not busy. Not to say I wouldn't enjoy more days of leisure!” Hazin knew he wanted to be a physician in college. To him, medicine is a pure way of helping others in their time of need. He considers it a real honor when people come to him in their vulnerable time. “I chose to specialize in hematology and oncology because it is just so gratifying. People are confused when I say that it is fulfilling because oncology has a depressing association with it. However, I am grateful to God for providing me with the skills of treating and curing cancers,” Hazin says. “ I was blessed with a sort of sixth sense when it comes to treating cancers. There truly is an art to oncology, and I feel so appreciative when I can help my patients beat their diseases, feel hopeful in their lives again, and give them and their families more years of love and time spent together. What is better than that?” Hazin’s best advice about staying healthy would be to consider two things: physical health and emotional well being. He believes that to really be healthy, you have to embrace both aspects. “Taking care of your physical health involves eating right, exercising, avoiding too much of anything, and making sure all the ‘numbers’ are in check. It's also important to see a doctor immediately if something doesn't feel right. Don't wait. Most medical problems can be cured if they are treated at the earliest stages,” Hazin says. “You also have to take care of your mental or emotional well being. You might be physically healthy, but if you aren't content in your life, it will eventually impact your body poorly. Maintain positive social relationships, spend time doing things that fulfill you, and always give back to your community and others. Being in a state of joy is a good indicator that you are spending your time well.”

THOMAS HOANG
CHRISTUS TRINITY CLINIC - CARDIOVASCULAR AND THORACIC SEURGERY
Dr. Thomas Hoang’s journey to Texarkana began from Vietnam, where he lived with his family in the war-torn country. Now a highly recognized cardiovascular thoracic surgeon, Dr. Hoang recently began calling Texarkana “home” after relocating from the Dallas/Plano, Texas area to join CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic-Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. In 1982, Hoang received a sponsorship to enter the United States. After a grueling 28-day voyage, he made his way to Austin, Texas, the origin of his sponsorship, where he found a job on the night shift at a bakery. “I just wanted to assimilate myself to my new country and was willing to work hard to make a living,” says. Although he graduated from high school in Vietnam, Hoang hadn’t given much thought to furthering his education in the United States until an incident at work made him realize his limited command of the English language would be a detriment to his success. So Hoang enrolled in an ESL (English as a Second Language) course at Austin Community College. He began to take additional classes and then enrolled at the University of Texas (UT). He tried to get into nursing school but wasn’t accepted because his English was not strong yet. An eager student, Hoang studied electrical engineering at UT, but he also took prerequisite medical prep courses. After graduation, he worked in the engineering field for a few months before being accepted to Southwestern Medical School, Dallas, TX. Initially leaning toward internal medicine as his specialty, the medical student experienced a change of heart when he was able to hear and meet with medical pioneer Dr. Michael DeBakey, the first surgeon to perform coronary artery bypass surgery. “It was at that point when I realized where my medical career needed to focus,” Hoang says. “To this day, what I do is very rewarding. It’s hard work but to have the opportunity to save lives and make an impact on someone’s life is a privilege.” A graduate of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dr. Hoang is board certified in cardiothoracic surgery. He has completed fellowships in minimally invasive surgery, heart and lung transplantation, cardiovascular thoracic surgery and is trained and certified in the da Vinci Robotics Surgical System, available at CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System, where he performs his surgeries. “Here I had the opportunity to join an outstanding health care system (CHRISTUS Trinity Clinics & CHRISTUS St. Michael) and to provide care in a great community,” Hoang says. 030 ALT Magazine | August 2017

BETH PETERSON
COLLOM & CARNEY CLINIC - GENERAL SURGEON Dr. Beth Peterson was born in Port Allen, Louisiana. Her grandparents were very influential in her life. She knew she wanted to be a surgeon on her very first trip to the operating room when she was four years old with a femur fracture. Peterson attended LSU for her bachelor’s degree in human nutrition. Then, she went on to LSU Health Science Center in Shreveport for her medical degree and a residency in general surgery. “Through medical school, I recognized that general surgery was my passion,” Peterson says. “I get to make a difference in my patients’ lives every day, and with surgery it is generally a change that is measurable and seen immediately. It is a very demanding profession and really is my life, but I would not change that for anything.”
Though Texarkana has provided Peterson with a broad practice she loves, robotic surgery and oncoplastic breast surgery are her focus. “Robotic assisted surgery is the single biggest change affecting patient recovery since laparoscopic procedures became common in the 1990s, and new technologies will continue to improve the surgical experience and recovery,” Peterson says. “Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer affecting women, and despite the many advances in therapy, surgery remains the mainstay of treatment. The personal connections developed with patients and new technologies we’ve been able to bring to the community are exciting.” Peterson’s best advice for staying healthy is to prevent major medical issues by practicing moderation, eating a balanced diet, and staying away from tobacco products. “Preventative medicine and routine cancer screening can detect disease early when treatment is possible,” Peterson says. 032 ALT Magazine | August 2017

MATT YOUNG
TEXARKANA EMERGENCY CENTER Dr. Matt Young was born and raised in Texarkana. He is the son of Dr. Mitchell Young and Donna Young. His father practiced general surgery for 40 years, and Matt also decided to pursue a career in medicine. “I decided to pursue a career in medicine because I always had the exposure through my family, and I saw how rewarding the profession was,” Young says. Young graduated from Texas High School and then studied and received his training at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, AR. He has been the Medical Director for LifeNet, Inc. for more than a decade and has been practicing Emergency Medicine in East Texas for over 16 years. He has also served as the Medical Director of Emergency Services at both local hospitals in Texarkana. Young is happily married to his wife of many years, Cindy. They have two sons, Logan and Garrett. “I chose emergency medicine because I enjoy helping others in their time of need,
and I feel it is my ministry that serves our God,” Young says. For Young, the best advice about staying healthy is “prevention is the cure.” “From the emergency standpoint, think before you leap, be prepared, and always have a plan with a backup plan for any possible emergency,” Young says. 036 ALT Magazine | August 2017

STEPHEN STEELE
TEXARKANA GASTROENTEROLOGY CONSULTANTS
Dr. Stephen Steele was born in Houston and lived there until his parents moved to Texarkana to begin his dad’s dental practice. He went to Pleasant Grove High School, completed his undergraduate degree at Texas A&M University, medical school and residency at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and his gastroenterology fellowship at Methodist Dallas Medical Center. His dad and two of his brothers also practice in the medical and dental fields here in Texarkana. “ Ever since I was a kid, medicine was the only profession I wanted to pursue,” Steele says. “I have always loved science, and medicine has given me the opportunity to pursue that in a way that can improve people’s lives. I had great mentors along the way starting with the medical community here in Texarkana. In high school, I had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Chris Alkire and the late Dr. Billy Burns, which solidified my desire to continue pursuing medicine.” Steele has been a physician for 6 years and is board certified in internal medicine. Steele recently completed a gastroenterology fellowship. “My desire to pursue gastroenterology stems from the diverse nature of the specialty and the impact that a gastroenterologist has on the lives of their patients,” Steele says. “I chose gastroenterology because it offers the excitement of a broad understanding of medical diseases and procedural skills while remaining grounded in one-on-one patient care. Given the developments of recent years, gastroenterology is an exciting and dynamic sub specialty within medicine.” Steele is married to Laura, and they have three boys: Isaac, Samuel and Silas. Steele and his family recently moved back to Texarkana where he is excited to join Texarkana Gastroenterology Consultants. “My family and I are looking forward to getting integrated back into Texarkana and I am excited to serve my hometown through my practice,” Steele says. Steele believes that in our fast paced world, it is increasingly hard to dedicate the time we need to stay healthy. “Similar to our cars, if we want our bodies to operate optimally as we age, we have to be proactive in the management of our health,” Steele says. “I recommend patient’s focus on a balanced diet with regular exercise, monitor their weight, and undergo routine health maintenance screenings, like mammograms and colonoscopies. Colon cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and the second most common cause of cancer-related death for men and women. Through colonoscopy surveillance strategies, there has been a reduction in colorectal cancer incidence and mortality.” 038 ALT Magazine | August 2017
JEANETTE AKIN
RN, BSN, MS - WADLEY REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER
Jeanette was born in Ft. Clayton, Panama Canal Zone to a military family. She has a twin sister, Jennifer, who is also a nurse, and a brother, Johnny, who is an attorney. “My pride and joy is my only son, Chris and my three grandchildren,” Jeanette says. “Chris followed in his grandfather’s shoes and served as a loadmaster on a C-17 in the Air Force. We have a large family and are extremely close. I enjoy our family gatherings which we have regularly.” From an early age, Jeanette knew she wanted to go into the medical field. She graduated from Texas Women’s University with a bachelor of science. She majored in nursing and minored in psychology and chemistry. She began working as a nursing student in Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas in 1970 and went to work at Wadley Hospital shortly after graduation in 1972. “I went into nursing for a very simple reason – I’ve always enjoyed helping people and get great personal satisfaction from doing so,” Jeanette says. “I can’t imagine doing anything else. My faith is an integral part of who I am and being a servant to those who come to the hospital seeking help and compassion is something that I hold very dear. Wadley is my home, and I am very proud of the care we provide.” Neonatal care and pediatrics is where Jeanette focused her clinical practice. She received her master’s degree from East Texas in 1983 with a major in interdisciplinary studies and a minor in management. “I began at Wadley as a nurse in pediatrics making $2.75 an hour before becoming the Director of the Nursery in August of 1974,” Jeanette says. “I stayed in that area of nursing until 1987 when I moved into the administrative areas of quality and risk management. I have also served as CNO and am currently the IASIS Regional Compliance Officer and Risk Officer for Wadley Regional Medical Center and Wadley Regional Medical Center at Hope.” Jeanette’s tip for staying healthy is “to focus on one lifestyle change at a time.” 040 ALT Magazine | August 2017

CARLA & DUSTIN CEARLEY June 10, 2017 The Love Story. During the summer of 2014, a mutual friend introduced us and we felt an instant connection. We talked for hours and found out we had a mutual love for the Razorbacks, fishing, sports, music, and dancing. We were also very family oriented and had children from previous relationships. On our first date, Dustin took me dancing and we danced all night! We were immediately inseparable and have been together ever since. We have shared so many wonderful memories but one of my favorite memories is when our children met and became best friends. Not only did we fall in love with each other, we fell in love with each other’s kids and became a family. Seeing the love Dustin had for his daughter and my kids made me fall madly in love with him. We had been dating for 2 years and we decided to take a vacation to Gulf Shores, AL. Dustin, who is not a huge fan of picture taking, wanted us to have our pictures taken on the beach. Before our vacation, he had secretly contacted a photographer and told him his plan to propose to me on the beach. During our photo session, he got down on one knee, with tears in his eyes, and asked me to marry him. I, of course, said yes!! It was so sweet and romantic and I love that we will forever have the pictures of him proposing.

“We wanted an intimate backyard wedding with just our children by our sides. We had no idea that our kids would be so emotional throughout the wedding though. They cried happy tears through most of the ceremony. After the wedding, our kids told us over and over how happy they were for us. Also, our ceremony was officiated by one of our best friends, and he made our wedding so personable and about us becoming one as a family. Our day was made so special by the help of our family and friends. Everyone special to us played such a huge role in our wedding. It was absolutely perfect and we are still so amazed at how beautiful everything turned out. It was truly the best day of our lives.”

RANDEE & GARRETT BURNETT May 5, 2017 The Love Story. Garrett and I met on May 18th of 2014, get this....on TINDER! Both bored, just out of an awful relationship, and being heart broken. He messaged me with just a simple “Hey.” Each time he would message me I would eventually stop messaging him back because he didn’t say much: he was a boring texter. I just finally asked him, "Why do you keep messaging me when I leave you hanging and we aren't talking about much?" He said, "Because you make me laugh and I just get this feeling." I was working at Texas Roadhouse when we met and living in Texarkana. One night he came and sat at one of the tables I was waiting on. That was the first time I got to actually see him with my own eyes. I was taken automatically when he rounded the corner. His bright blue eyes pulled me in and all 6 feet and 5 inches of him wrapped me up and gave me one of the greatest hugs I've ever received. We talked as I served him and he invited me to hang out at one of his friend’s house. We hung out and it was as if we had known each other forever. After that, we saw each other almost every day! One day he told me that his parents were having a fish fry. He was insistent that I needed to be there. They had invited my family to be there also. That wasn’t unusual to me because we always had get-togethers like that. His mom and my mom said they wanted to take some pictures of all of us while we were all together. They insisted that Garrett and I get our picture taken first and sit on the couch. His little sister and my little brother got behind the couch during our picture and held up some signs that said “ Marry” and “Me?” I could hear his heart beat while they were taking our pictures. As I turned to ask if he was okay, I saw our little siblings behind us out of the corner of my eye. He got down on his knee and said, "Randee, you mean everything to me, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?" I said yes and ugly cried! I will thank God every day for making Garrett and I find each other. When we did, we saved each other.

On our wedding day, a childhood friend, Chelsy (Short) Massey, who had moved to Virginia, and had told me she couldn't make it to the wedding, surprised me by showing up. Not only did she show up and make me ugly cry, she brought me the sweetest gift anyone could have ever thought of. It was a bouquet charm that had a picture of my Great Grandfather on it. On the back it had inscribed “sweet thang in his own handwriting. He was a very special person to me. We were together all the time when I was little. I lost him 10 years ago. I still think of him daily. Only Chelsy could have known how important it would be to have him with me on my wedding day. She had even gone by the flower shop before the wedding and had the girls make a wire loop on my bouquet for me to attach the charm to. This way he got to walk me down the aisle.

MARY & KADE MCFADDEN May 20, 2017 The Love Story. Kade and I have known each other all of our lives. Our mothers grew up together and were friends throughout high school. Kade and I only saw each other a few times growing up, but as we got older we would occasionally talk and see one another at high school football and baseball games. Shortly after I graduated from high school I got in touch with Kade because I heard had he moved back home from Tulsa. We talked over the phone for about a week before we had our first date. He approached my dad at work to ask him for his permission to take me out on a date. Needless to say that impressed the heck out of my parents! We dated for 2 years, and on our 2 year anniversary he popped the question. We had a big craw fish boil at my parents house with lots of friends and family, Kade had been planning it for a while and it was the perfect surprise! One year later we were married!
Many things were special about our wedding day, but one thing that made it most special was that my Granny and Poppa were able to be there. My poppa has been sick for a while and it was such a blessing that he felt well enough and had enough strength on that day to be there to see me get married. That is something that I will cherish forever.

KATIE & JOSH SHEPHERD April 22, 2017 The Love Story. Our love story actually began with my dad in August 2015. See my dad and Josh work together. So through casual conversations between the two of them I was brought up to Josh by my dad one day. He had asked Josh if he had ever seen me before or met me before, he hadn’t of course. So we looked each other up on Facebook and began talking that way for a few weeks before we actually met one another. I was surprised one day when I was at work and he came in to met me and brought me a smoothie. I thought that it was such a sweet gesture. From there we pretty much spent most of our days talking to one another and seeing each other as much as possible until he finally popped the question on December 6, 2016. He had actually asked my dad a whole month earlier and everyone knew except for me. I can’t believe that everyone in our families had keep the secret for that long. It was a special night. He proposed in the same place that we met, at my work, Fan Fare Gifts. We were married on April 22, 2017. It was one of the best days of my life. I couldn’t have asked for a better, more beautiful, more prefect day then that one. It is one day that I will remember forever.

We talked a little bit and he really got my attention. A couple of days later, we started talking more and more and finally he asked me on a date and dated all throughout high school. As we went off to different colleges, we went our separate ways, but always somehow came back to each other. I am a strong believer in if its meant to be, love will find a way. One day, I texted him out of the blue and was like "hey, we should get married." and now here we are. I am a huge Rangers fan! Caleb and I decided to go to one of the games this summer. Well, he calls me a couple of days before the game and tells me that he has won two tickets for a free tour of the stadium before the game where we will get to go into the media room, press box, and the dugout. Of course I'm ecstatic. We get to the stadium on game day and somehow get a personal tour where it's just Caleb, me, and the tour guide. We get to the dugout and as we walk up, Jeff Banister (the manager of the Rangers) is sitting right there!! I'm shamelessly fangirling at this point. The tour guide tells Caleb and I that we can get on the field and take a picture. So, we go up on the field, take a picture, and then out of nowhere both my parents and Caleb's parents come out. I look at Caleb and he gets down on one knee and proposes right there on the Texas Rangers baseball field. Of course, I say yes!

There were so many special things from Caleb's dad baking our cake to my mom (owner of Traditions) going out of her way to find me the perfect dress. One of my favorite things though is our unity ceremony. Caleb and I wanted it to be something that fit our relationship so he suggested planting a "Unity Tree". He is a forester and I'm a little hippie so it was so fitting! So our parents poured soil from the places we grew up, Caleb planted a dogwood tree, and I watered it. It was so special and unique and now we can nuture this tree and watch it grow as our love continues to grow.

Lauren Foster and Kiefer Peek September 30, 2017 Kiefer and I are very excited to share this memorable time with our closest friends and family. We first met in 2010 through mutual friends and became inseparable very quickly. We have grown together, encouraged, and supported each other in good and bad times throughout the years and I cherish every memory. Kiefer proposed to me on Christmas Eve of 2016 and it was one of the best moments of my life. I strongly believe there is no better timing than the Lord’s timing. On the date of September 30, 2017 at Timeless Traditions, I will walk down the aisle and exchange vows with my very best friend! Giving Credit By Lisa Myers, Ed.D. BAAS Program Coordinator Texas A&M University-Texarkana
Hanging on the wall of Chief Alex Serrano’s office at Texas A&M University-Texarkana is a print of an iconic photograph entitled, “Yankee Boys.” The photo was snapped on August 17, 1948, the day after Babe Ruth passed away, the day the entire world of baseball was in mourning. The picture was shot in black and white, and the subject of the photo is four young boys gazing up at Yankee Stadium in pure reverence. It hangs in Chief Serrano’s office because he, too, is a Yankee Boy, born and raised in New York who did not become a Texan until the age of 15. Sitting and talking with the chief, I could sense the same reverence depicted in the photo in his words and how he described what he simply refers to as his service. Chief Serrano graduated from high school at the age of 17 and immediately enlisted with the Army after receiving his diploma. He doesn’t characterize his decision to enlist as one he “had” to do or one that he chose by default. His decision was purposeful; it was something he absolutely wanted to do and was proud to do. Today, he says, “I am grateful for the opportunity I had to serve my country,” and when he speaks these words it is with humility, honor, and reverence for not only what he did in the service but for the people he served with—especially for them. After leaving the Army, Serrano continued to serve, but at the community level. He came home and joined the police force. When sharing his experiences in that role, Chief Serrano speaks in the same reverent tone as he did when discussing his service in the Army. Over 066 ALT Magazine | August 2017
Where Credit is Due
and over, he identified what he called the “human element” that unified all his encounters and what enabled him to see through all the “bad stuff” and focus on his job of serving people. He shared one instance in which he had to help a family who had lost their mother to illness and then their father to suicide just one week after the mother’s death. This was clearly not just a “case” for Serrano. It was about
the people, and once again, a palpable reverence shown through his words. Chief Serrano was able to retire from the police force early in life with a successful career under his belt. He wasn’t through serving, though. He joined A&M-Texarkana’s police force, which eventually led him to the office he currently holds. It was in this role that he found out that his years of service to his country and community could be used to earn college credit through the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS) program. In fact, he could earn up to 54 hours in credit if he utilized all the opportunities available within the degree program for those who have served in the armed forces and/or
the police force.
For example, after reading through a course syllabus for Introduction to Criminal Justice, Chief Serrano realized he already knew most of the content covered in the course and could already demonstrate the learning outcomes listed on the document. So, he put together a portfolio with the guidance of the BAAS staff and was able to earn credit for that course without actually taking the course – a significant savings in time and money. His plan is to build more portfolios based on his training in order to complete his degree as quickly as possible and for the least cost as possible. In addition to utilizing the portfolio opportunities housed in the BAAS, Chief Serrano was also able to utilize his military training credits toward the degree. In fact he was able to bring 33 hours of military credit into the degree, allowing him to use those credits in the place of electives needed to reach the required 120 hours in the degree. Again, his service helped him save both time and money. For Chief Serrano’s years of service, A&MTexarkana is proud to offer a program that recognizes and values the knowledge gained through service to our country and community. Like those boys gazing up at Yankee Stadium, we stand in reverence of such service and are dedicated in making sure we give credit where credit is due. The BAAS program is our way of doing just that.

let investors know exactly what to expect and when to expect it. It’s that simple, and the best way to get “back to basics”. With Shock Analysis, we can show you what your portfolio is likely to look like if interest rates were to rise or fall. Better yet, for buy and hold investors with our customized portfolios, we can tell you how much money you will receive year after year until your bonds mature (at par, barring a default). No guessing, no voodoo, and as near to certain as you can be in such an uncertain world. You can count on bonds in the future, as their cash flow, yield and maturity are all known ahead of time. This is what we mean by “getting back to basics”. Is your fixed income working for you? Do you know what you own? Investing involves risk and you may incur a profit or a loss. Investments in debt securities involve a variety of risks, including credit risk, interest rate risk, and liquidity risk. Investments in debt securities rated below investment grade (commonly referred to as "junk bonds") may be subject to greater levels of credit and liquidity risk than investments in investment grade securities. If sold prior to maturity an investor will receive the then current market value which may be more or less than original cost. There is an inverse relationship between interest rate movements and fixed income prices. Generally, when interest rates rise, fixed income prices fall and when interest rates fall, fixed income prices rise. Investments in municipal securities may not be appropriate for all investors, particularly those who do not stand to benefit from the tax status of the investment. Municipal bond interest is not subject to federal income tax but may be subject to AMT, state or local taxes. Additionally the bonds may be subject to capital gains taxes if sold or redeemed at a profit. Diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss. The risk of default may increase due to changes in the issuer's credit quality. Price changes may occur due to changes in interest rates and the liquidity of the bond.

Fish Tales with Mike Brower Got a spare $100,000? I guess it’s official - the world has gone mad. Ranger Boats is introducing the Z521L, a special edition boat with a price tag of right at $100,000. That’s not a misprint. Say it again - $100,000 for a boat. We all can agree that boats are overpriced as with anything related to fishing is. For instance, a switch for a trolling motor is $40.00 at a dealership, but you can go to an electrical supply house and get the exact same switch for $2.00. My thing is, who wants a $100k boat that (from what I can tell) looks just like a regular Z521, with the exception of the special edition having “50 Years” or “50” all over it? I’m sure someone will buy one, but have we not reached a price point that is Alex Jones crazy? I mean where, does it stop? Will we have a boat next year that’s $120k because it has a special edition Lowrance or Hummingbird Graph? Or special power poles? I feel very confident in saying that you can count me out on this one. If I came home with a $100k boat, my Debbie would have a good case for having me committed to the closest mental facility that would take me. Which brings me to a last thought. How do you finance that thing? On a five year note that’s around $1,800 a month and with a 10 year, it’s still around $1,000 a month. Of course, you could trade in your house as the down payment, or maybe your first-born child. Pass.
