From the Publisher... Christmas traditions are something different to every person and every family. My family’s traditions may be a little different than some. Growing up, our family always lived a long way from any family. We moved regularly, sometimes every 7 months – you know, any time a new paper mill was built! (My dad would say that’s how he went from being the floor sweeper to being the next to the top person at the mill.) It was hard on us because every time we would make new friends, we would have to leave them. When you move that often, you learn that your family is the only thing that is permanent in your life. So my brother and I became very close. Our love of dogs helped the bond grow strong and we are still very close to this day. My mom always made a big production out of cooking Thanksgiving dinner, but Christmas was a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus, not cooking. Our Christmas Day dinner consisted of steak and potatoes – my dad’s favorite! This is still my tradition today. (Notice my Christmas tradition is about food – my favorite thing!) She would not only cook an amazing steak, but we would have multiple appetizers to devour on Christmas Eve, as well as her delightful desserts. Daddy always did like dessert and she kept them at our house! I Wish my metabolism was what it was as a younger person when I could eat a whole box of Kraft macaroni and cheese by myself as my afternoon snack, then eat dinner and dessert, and still weigh 117 pounds at 5’ 9”. What I wouldn’t give for that skinny body again! Anyway, I digress! So the Christmas Eve appetizers and desserts and the Christmas steak and potato tradition continues. For others, traditions come in many different ways. For Kevin Schutte, celebrating the birth of Jesus comes naturally. A man with a servant’s heart, he is all about Christmas and helping others, just as Jesus did. I had no idea he was the Associate Pastor at Myrtle Springs Baptist Church, but when I found out, it didn’t surprise me. He has a true heart for helping others and this is just one more way he shows that. As Assistant Chief of Police for Texarkana, Texas Police Department, he assists in helping the citizens of Texarkana on a daily basis. His service as a police officer goes back years, a true testament to the type of person he is. For those who don’t know me well, my son-in-law recently joined the ranks of police officers, and my daughter has been accepted to Texas DPS Academy to become a state trooper. I am very privileged to have two people in my family who want to serve their communities and help make them safer. Our traditions will be changing in the next year or so as their work hours will be a lot different than past holidays. No more having everyone home for Thanksgiving or Christmas, I’m sure. Change happens every day. I will embrace that change knowing that God is in control and He will help to keep them safe and bring them home. Our Christmas traditions may change, but like Kevin Schutte, our love and trust in God will not. As you go through this holiday season, remember the reason and try to help someone in need. Sometimes all it takes is a smile or a visit to make a holiday brighter. May God bless you and yours this Christmas…

Kevin Schutte is often referred to as “a man of many hats.” Instead of seeing himself as a man who does it all, Kevin can really boil all his endeavors down to one thing; helping others. Whether he is leading the choir’s new Christmas program at Myrtle Springs Baptist Church, or instructing police officers and other employees in the art of effective communication and conflict resolution as Assistant Police Chief for the Texarkana Texas Police Department, Kevin wants to leave the world better than the way he found it. “I really don’t consider myself as wearing ‘many hats.’ Instead, I feel I basically wear one hat, a servant’s hat, that suits many different opportunities. Being an Assistant Police Chief and Associate Pastor provides me the opportunity to interact with lots of people in lots of situations. I find that these two roles complement each other very well,” Kevin says. “No matter what I’m doing, my desire is to serve and help others any way that I can.” Kevin is a lifelong resident of Bowie County. He has lived in Hooks, Texas, his entire life, and his careers, both in the ministry and in law enforcement, started with influence from his family. Kevin considers one of the greatest blessings of his life to have grown up in a strong Christian home. “My faith is important to me and permeates every area of my life. It is a strong faith in God that has helped me to navigate through difficult situations both personally and professionally,” Kevin says. “My faith keeps me well-grounded and provides much needed balance in my life. With all of the negative things that are prevalent in the world today, I continue to approach life with a positive attitude and find good in things daily.” Kevin and his wife, Kim, grew up in the same school district and church and have been married for 29 years. Kevin says that she is "as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.” The couple have two children; Kaitlin who is 25, and Kade who is 18. Kaitlin is graduating from the University of Texas Arlington with a Bachelor of

Science in Nursing RN degree. Kaitlin is employed with Christus Saint Michael’s Hospital where she works on the “heart team” assisting with open heart surgeries. Kade is a senior at Hooks High School where he has been the Drum Major of the Hooks High School marching band for the past two years. Kade plans to attend college and earn a degree in business accounting. “I have absolutely the BEST family a man could ask for. God has blessed me with a great family who supports me in all that I do,” Kevin says. One of the most influential people in Kevin’s life was his father, Donal Schutte. Although Donal passed away in 2016, he will forever be remembered as a public servant having formerly served as Hooks Fire Chief, Reserve Deputy Sheriff for Bowie County, and Municipal Judge. “My dad was one of those unique individuals who could always handle practically anything, and he was a true servant in all that he did. He was my example of what it meant to put service above self,” Kevin says. “I learned from my dad to always do ‘the right thing’ no matter how difficult. My dad was the most selfless man I have ever known. He helped many people in many ways and expected nothing in return. He was honest, hardworking, and a man of his word. I could only hope to ever be half the man my dad was.” Kevin is also thankful to his faithful Christian mother, whose constant prayers he credits for his remaining safe through three decades of service as a police officer. “I knew I could always count on the prayers of my sweet mother,” Kevin said. Kevin’s role in public service began at age 15 when he became a volunteer firefighter. He started working for an ambulance service not long after that. The combination of Kevin’s faith and having witnessed his father’s dedicated service to his community inspired him to want to give back.“ As Christians we are supposed to strive to be like Christ. When you look at the ministry of Jesus, it was a moment by moment thing. Jesus simply ALT-Mag.com | December 2018 011

encountered people where they were, as they were, and met their needs,” Kevin says. “I feel that this is the same thing we are called to do. We ought to be able to accept people as we find them, whatever the circumstances, and meet their needs if we have the means and opportunity.” When Kevin graduated high school, he enrolled in the nursing program at the University of Texas in Tyler, but just before he was set to leave, he received a call about a job opening for a correctional officer at the jail. He was torn at the time between choosing a career in the medical field or law enforcement. He ultimately chose to take the job at the jail. “Everything started with that decision, and I stayed with it. I started in the jail and worked all the way

up in the organization,” Kevin says. Kevin has worked most every position and assignment in the department during his 30 years of service. He served on the SWAT team for 11 years and spent 20 years in criminal investigations. “I really enjoyed being able to develop leads and facts to solve crimes that ultimately led to the recovery of stolen property or identified those responsible for physically harming others,” Kevin says. While he worked on the police force, Kevin also simultaneously served as the Fire Chief for the City of Hooks for 11 years. During that time, he worked to become state certified as a firefighter, a firefighter instructor, an arson investigator, and an EMT. While he was Chief, Kevin was responsible for command oversight of the firefighters as well as the paramedics and emergency medical technicians which staffed one of the only volunteer ALS ambulance services in the state. This was in addition to his full time job as a police officer for the City of Texarkana, Texas. “While the fire service is different from law enforcement, it was a great opportunity to serve the Hooks community in addition to the Texarkana community,” Kevin says. “I enjoyed my time as volunteer firefighter and ultimately the role of Fire Chief very much. As a past chief, I continue to support the Hooks Fire Department in all that they do. I greatly respect men and women who volunteer their time to protect property and help ensure the safety of their neighbors.” In March 2015 Kevin was promoted to Assistant Police Chief of the Texarkana, Texas Police Department. One of the most effective skills that Kevin brings to this position is his capacity and passion for dealing with people, no matter what they are going through. He enjoys providing training sessions for officers in effective communication and conflict resolution, techniques that he uses whether ministering to a family at the church or dealing with unruly, irrational persons as a police officer. “I always try and tell the officers that you have to be relational and unbiased. It’s good to show some flexibility in order to reach an agreement and create

harmony,” Kevin says. “Our job as officers is to leave people better than we found them at their worst. It’s also important that our officers leave their emotions out of the equation. If we get emotionally involved, we can make a situation worse. We have to remain professional at all times and in all circumstances.” Kevin recognizes that when an officer is interacting with someone in the community, that citizen is probably having one of the worst days of their life. He has learned that people come from all different backgrounds, and they may put on a mask or pretend like everything is ok, but a lot of times, it isn’t. Also, most of the anger displayed to law enforcement is actually fear. “Whether I am on the receiving end of an angry phone call or walking up on a scene where people are upset, most of the time, they are angry at the situation and not us. They may not know how to express that, and when they are complaining about an officer taking too long to arrive, what they may actually be saying is ‘I’m afraid. I cannot control this situation, and I do not like it,’” Kevin says. “I’m a firm believer that the more you know about people, the more you can determine where they are coming from and understand the emotions they’re showing, even if it is misdirected.” So, when faced with an interaction that involves a lot of emotion, Kevin tells officers that a good rule of thumb is to treat a person like they are a relative. “Pretend like they are your grandmother. How would you want her to be treated? Most people just want to be heard. Being quiet and listening can often diffuse the situation,” Kevin says. “When a personal face meets another personal face, there is always conflict; we cannot let our emotions get involved. When a person is upset, they may try to make it personal, but we have to remain professional. I’m not naive; I know that there is not always good in everything, but, ultimately, it all comes down to understanding people.” While other departments around the country have felt some hostility from the community towards law enforcement, Kevin says that Texarkana has always been supportive of its officers. “I’ve been in law enforcement PROUDLY SPONSORED IN PART BY:

in Texarkana for 33 years, and I still love it. One of the things we’ve always enjoyed in TTPD is excellent support from our community. We are blessed to have a great community to serve, and by and large they are easy to serve,” Kevin says. “We haven’t experienced the problems that a lot of other departments have in recent years. In my opinion, Texarkana is just a great place to work, play and raise your family. Texarkana has been really really good to me, and I enjoy serving here very much.” Kevin sees an even brighter future for the law enforcement officers in Texarkana. In recent years, the organization has been able to start their own training services at the department which allows them to increase in-house training. They also host many other agencies at their site, and Kevin has noted that this has caused a rise in confidence. “All of our officers do such a great

HOLIDAY RECIPES

By: Anne Granado

Texas High School English Department's Favorite Recipes As the English department at Texas High School planned for their annual Christmas party, the discussion immediately went to the food we would have. “Who is making the baked onion dip?” “Is someone making the ham and cheese sandwiches with poppy seeds?” These are just some of the recipes that we look forward to having every year. They are symbols of the holidays and memories of the times we spend together, and surely, we are not alone. As the holidays approach, we look forward to the foods that remind us of family, love, friends, and traditions. Kelsey Rankin teaches 9th and 11th grade at Texas High School, and her family raises cows, so when I asked her for her favorite family holiday recipe, she sent me her family’s chili recipe and details about the party they have every December 23rd. “Food is so closely attached to celebrating and making memories,” Kelsey says. “Although enjoying each other is always the focus, having traditions of certain recipes makes us both anticipate and enjoy our time together that much more.” Ashleigh Bridges teaches 9th grade at Texas High School, and she sent me a recipe for peppermint bark that she began making with her dad when she was only six-years-old. “He let me smash the candy canes into small pieces and stir the candy cane pieces into the melted chocolate,” Ashleigh says. “It is just that sweet memory of my dad taking time out of his busy day to spend with me that I will always remember.” With each recipe that I received from my friends and colleagues, a story was told as well. Each of the recipes printed here is dear to the family represented. They make it with love every year because it reminds them of holiday traditions that will live on through generations. Enjoy their stories, and their family recipes as you create memories of your own this holiday season.

Caramel Cheesecake Bars Submitted by Katie Williams, English Teacher Growing up, Katie had three cousins and a sister. All five girls would come together after Thanksgiving at her grandparents’ house and have their annual cookie bake. They made aprons, which was special because they got to showcase their own personalities, and they kept them for years to come. “We would always make cookies and candies and take enough homemade tins to pass out to neighbors and families at church. We always had the best time doing this because we didn’t all live in the same town, and it got us together,” Katie says. “In fact, even though we are all grown with families of our own, we recently surprised our grandma with a cookie bake. Seeing how special this was for us growing up, my mom has carried on the tradition with my kids, only they participate in a cookie contest at church. My kids talk about it all year! This recipe is from our family cookbook, and it’s delicious!” Ingredients: Crust: ● 1 ½ cup graham crumbs ● ½ cup chopped pecans ● ¼ cup butter, melted Filling: ● 4 pkg cream cheese, softened ● 1 cup sugar ● 1 cup sour cream ● 1 TBL vanilla ● 4 eggs Topping: ● ¼ cup caramel topping ● ½ cup chopped pecans Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a 9x13 baking pan with foil creating handles; grease foil lining. 2. In a small bowl mix graham crumbs, ½ cup of the pecans and 018 ALT Magazine | December 2018

melted butter. Press firmly onto bottom of the prepared pan. 3. In a large bowl, cream together the cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Add sour cream and vanilla; mix well. Beat in eggs one at a time until just blended. Pour over crust. 4. Bake 45 minutes or until center is almost set. Refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight. 5. Lift out of pan onto cutting board, using foil handles. Drizzle with topping and remaining ½ cup pecans. Cut into 32 bars and store leftovers in refrigerator.

Robbie Ray’s Perfect Pie Crust Recipe Submitted by Tessa Ray, English as a Second Language Teacher Tessa’s mother-in-law, Robbie Ray, was one of the best cooks Tessa has ever known. Robbie believed that Tessa could do anything, including cooking, but Tessa has never felt like a good cook. Though she doesn’t spend much time in the kitchen, this is one recipe that really stuck with Tessa. “Anytime we were there for a meal, especially during holidays, she showed her love by cooking each person’s favorite food, and that included their favorite pie,” Tessa says. “Her pie crust was the start of perfect pecan, decadent chocolate, and rich coconut pies. When I make this crust, I think of her in the kitchen surrounded by pots, pans, and people. She never thought her dishes were special, but they were always anticipated as the best part of the holidays.” Ingredients: ● 1/2 c oil ● 1/4 c milk ● Dash of salt ● 1 1/2 cup of all purpose flour

Directions: Stir into a ball, press into a pie dish.

Snickerdoodle Cookies Submitted by Carrie Rayburn, English Teacher Carrie began making this recipe with her son, Abram, when he was only six-years-old, though he is twelve-years-old now. He has always loved to help her in the kitchen. The recipe for these snickerdoodle cookies has been a masterpiece in the making. Carrie and Abram started with a recipe from the church cookbook. Then, Carrie began to look for other recipes to experiment with different ways to make them, and the current version is now a compilation of several recipes. “We love this recipe because you chill the dough, and it made it easier for Abram, and now my son, Sam, to work with it that way,” Carrie says. “Abram loves to help me bake snickerdoodles the day before Christmas Eve. His favorite part is rolling the chilled dough balls in the cinnamon and sugar. It’s become a fun, family tradition.” Ingredients: Cookies: ● 3 cups all-purpose flour ● 2 tsp cream of tartar ● 1 tsp baking soda ● 1 tsp ground cinnamon ● ½ tsp salt ● 1 cup unsalted butter, softened ● 1 cup granulated sugar ● ½ cup brown sugar, lightly packed ● 1 large egg room temperature ● 1 large egg yolk room temperature ● 2 tsps pure vanilla extract Cinnamon sugar coating: ● ¼ cup granulated sugar ● 2 tsp ground cinnamon Directions: 1. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, ground cinnamon and salt until well combined. Set aside. 2. In a large mixing bowl using an electric mixer, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar for about 1-2 minutes or until well-combined. Mix in the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla extract until well combined, stopping to scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. 3. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Cover tightly and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. 4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats and set aside. 5. Remove the cookie dough from the refrigerator. Using a 1 tablespoon cookie scoop or measuring tablespoon, scoop the cookie dough onto the prepared baking sheets. Each ball of

cookie dough should measure about 1 and ¼ inches once you roll it into a ball. 6. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the ¼ cup of sugar and 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon for the coating. Roll each ball of cookie dough into a ball, then coat in the cinnamon sugar mixture and place back on the baking sheets, making sure to leave a little room between each one. 7. Bake in separate batches at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 7-10 minutes or until the tops of the cookies are set. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on the baking sheet for 5-10 minutes, then transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. Store cookies in an airtight container on the counter for up to one week.

Peanut Butter Balls Submitted by Angie Raney, Assistant Principal Angie’s youngest son, Kyle, always requested these peanut butter balls for his school parties, so they made them often throughout the years. They are also one of Angie’s favorite recipe for giftgiving during the holidays because they are so easy to put in a Christmas tin with a little wax paper. “Our family enjoys making Christmas candy with a variety of choices, including peanut butter balls, to pass out to neighbors and family friends,” Angie says. “I grew up with my mom and grandmother making Christmas candy every year. It’s just a family tradition that helps me get in the Christmas spirit and remember my childhood. Homemade treats really help say that someone is special to you!” Ingredients: ● 1 ½ cup creamy peanut butter ● ½ cup butter, softened ● 1 tsp vanilla ● 3 cups powdered sugar ● 1 pkg. chocolate almond bark Directions: 1. Mix all ingredients except bark. 2. Roll in to about 1” shaped balls and lay on a cookie sheet. 3. Put in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. 4. Follow package directions to melt almond bark in microwave. 5. Dip peanut butter balls to the bark and put on wax paper. Allow to cool about 15 minutes.

Pink Lemonade Pie Submitted by Maryann Fricks, French Teacher Maryann has so many delicious recipes associated with her childhood. The Christmas Eve menu at her paternal grandmother Bessie’s home is one that she can remember vividly. The main dish was chicken salad made with the meat from a hen. She used a hen because the meat is “juicier and more flavorful.” Bessie’s chicken salad included chopped red apples, pecans, celery, boiled eggs and Miracle Whip. She would also have a tray called “greenery.” This selection included black olives, sweet ALT-Mag.com | December 2018 019

gherkins, and celery. Jello was another feature of the meal. Bessie would layer red and green Jello to make a Christmas presentation. For dessert her specialties were fresh coconut cake and fruit cake soaked in bourbon. “Of course all of these dishes were prepared with a great deal of labor from scratch! Christmas Eve was special!” Maryann says, “Now that I am the family hostess, I try to prepare my meal with the love that Bessie used to make our holiday so memorable.” The recipe below is an original for lemonade pie that was a new creation in 1972. Bessie was always willing to try new recipes, and according to Maryann, some recipes need to be “easy and memorable.” Ingredients: ● 1 graham cracker pie crust ● 1 small can of frozen pink lemonade ● 1 can of Eagle Brand milk ● I carton of Cool Whip Directions: 1. In a large mixing bowl pour the can of Eagle Brand milk. 2. Next pour in the lemonade and mix together well. 3. Fold in the Cool Whip. 4. Pour this mixture into the pie crust. 5. Chill for several hours then serve.

Barrington Family Chili Recipe Submitted by Kelsey Rankin, English Teacher

Directions: 1. In a heavy Dutch oven, cook meat over medium heat until gray. 2. Add onion; cook until translucent. 3. Stir in next 6 items. 4. Add tomato sauce and water. Lower heat and simmer for 3 hours or more (lid slightly ajar). Stir occasionally. 5. May be thickened with a paste of crackers mixed with water. Pour paste into chili, stirring constantly to avoid lumping. Simmer for an additional 30 minutes. Serves 8-10.

Millionaire Candy Submitted by DeAnn McClaren, English Teacher DeAnn grew up in Childress, Texas, on a farm about a mile or so from her Grandmother Rosie. DeAnn could walk or ride her horse across the cotton fields to get to her grandmother's house. “She was one of the hardest working women I have ever known,” DeAnn says. “She chopped cotton, always had a garden, and raised five kids on a farmer’s income. My parents still live on this farm today.” Every Christmas growing up, Grandmother Rosie and DeAnn would make these Millionaire candies, and they were always a hit. “I loved hanging out with her because she was a little/lot sassy and she just got me. We were not allowed to call her Granny because she said she wasn’t old enough to be a Granny,” DeAnn says. ”I now make these candies every year with the best memories of her in my heart. She lived to the ripe age of 101.” Ingredients: ● 1 package Kraft caramels ● 2 ½ TBL water ● 2 cups chopped Pecans ● 16 oz Hershey candy bar ● 2 oz paraffin

This chili recipe is special to Kelsey’s family because it is served at their annual Christmas party on December 23rd. They call this party the “Adam Party” because Adam came Directions: before Eve (get it? They have it the 1. Place unwrapped caramels and water in a double boiler to melt day before Christmas Eve!) DeAnn says that she is ● 1 large onion, chopped a phenomenal cook. The cake ● 1 tsp. garlic powder was DeAnn’s favorite to use ● 1 Tbsp. cumin as a newlywed because it is ● 3-4 tbsp chili powder simple. “And it made me look ● Crushed red pepper (to taste) like I could really cook from the ● 4 Tbsp. Peppermint Bark Submitted by Ashleigh Bridges, Mix until smooth. Then pour in prepared oblong cake pan (spray pan and then coat with flour to prevent sticking). Bake at 350 for 30-35 minutes or English Teacher until done. Frost with easy chocolate icing.

Directions: 1. Melt 1 stick oleo. 2. Add 3 TBLs cocoa 3. Then add 2-3 TBLs milk and powdered sugar until thick.

Ashleigh’s recipe is kid-friendly. She began making it with her dad when she was only six. As a family, they always make peppermint bark around Christmas. It is important to their family because, even though it is a simple recipe, it has been passed down on her dad’s side for a few generations. Ashleigh’s dad always told her that he and his father used to make it, but after his father passed away, around his thirteenth birthday, it was something her dad continued to do in remembrance of his father.

Creating New

Traditions

Fresh starts…that’s what Ashley Carlow was told she should do when she bought Traditions Bridal and Formal in 2016. The suggestions flowed in, from name change, to location, to styles.

son’s wedding, hosting another wedding for Katie, who was their store manager at the time, Ashley couldn’t even begin thinking of a new name and all the changes that would go with it.

At that time, not only was Ashley busy with her son Triston’s senior year of high school, which included baseball playoffs, and graduation activities, but she also just couldn’t decide what she would want to name the business. The first year in business, she tried to continue to teach school and run the shop from the classroom, so there was a definite disconnect from the business. The second year, Ashley left teaching and jumped full time into Traditions. That’s when they really began to see the business start to grow.

In July, a representative for Justin Alexander, a bridal designer, invited them to attend The Launch. The Launch was the first ever bridal

Soon it became apparent that a larger space was much needed. Ashley explains, “I had always loved the building that Crocker Jewelers was once in. Once I looked at it, I started to design our new location in my mind.” The move happened on March 28, 2018. At that time, several people continued to suggest that it would be a great time to change the name and make it hers. But with prom season in full swing, assisting in planning her

conference held in Atlanta, Georgia, before market where a panel of bridal shop owners come together to discuss what is working for them, trends in the business, and to help other bridal shops grow. It truly changed Ashley’s thought process, mindset, and vision for Traditions. She left the conference wanting more knowledge, so she reached out to one of the presenters, who has since become her “bridal boutique coach”. Immediately, they decided to rebrand and rename! “After a couple of deep conversations with the consulting team, my staff,

my husband, and my children, we decided to rename traditions to Gracyn Elizabeth Bride,” Ashley shares. “My husband and I (and our family) suffered the loss of a stillborn daughter in 2000. It was truly devastating to me and changed me forever. Of course, life goes on but a mom never forgets.” So, to honor Gracyn’s memory, they chose to name the shop after her. That was just the beginning. Ashley wanted to do more. “We plan to use a percentage of each sale from bridal gowns to make baby gowns in white satin that can be donated to the local hospitals to give to families that also have stillborn babies,” Ashley says. The tear in her eye and the crack of her voice tell you just how much this means to her. “I want to be able to give something to families that went through the loss that we went through. I’ve known other families that have also suffered infant loss. It’s tough,” she says. Ashley, her family, and her staff are excited about the future and the mission of Gracyn Elizabeth Bride. Although it took a little while to get there, it’s where they are meant to be. The future lies ahead. New traditions are coming.

WITH A BAAS IN HAND, YOUR OWN CLASSROOM IS WITHIN REACH LISA MYERS, ED.D., BAAS PROGRAM COORDINATOR, TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY-TEXARKANA She’s Got a Knack

He Has a Call

Maria knows she is good with kids. When she tutors students at her son’s school, their little faces beam as they master the lessons they are working on. It’s like watching a light bulb turn on in their little heads, and she’s just as excited as they are. Her time at the school is her favorite time of the week. She wants to feel like this every day.

Kenneth has been working in the business sector for several years. While he makes a respectable living, he finds the work unrewarding. He wants to make a difference with his life, and he simply can’t see his current job ever providing that kind of opportunity. As each week comes to a close, he looks back on his work but finds that little of it was meaningful. In his heart, he wants to do more.

She Has the Experience

Maria, Jocelyn, and Kenneth would all make wonderful classroom teachers, but none of them hold the credentials needed to pursue a career in education. A career where they can put their skills, experience, and heart to work, and make a difference at the same time.

Jocelyn is a pro. For the last 15 years she has been a teacher’s aide in early childhood classrooms. During that time she has learned a great deal about children… what works and doesn’t work with them, how to motivate them to learn, and teaching them about classroom expectations. She’s learned how to put a lesson together and execute it in a way that holds the children’s attention, and how to work on a team of educators focused on student growth and success.

028 ALT Magazine | December 2018

Maria, who dropped out of college after just one year of study, thinks she will have to start all over if she goes back to college. Jocelyn is in her late thirties and thinks it’s too late for her to get the degree she needs to become a teacher. Kenneth has no experience in the classroom. He just knows that’s where he wants to be someday. But he also knows he can’t quit his job to attend classes or gain experience in the classroom as a student teacher. There has to be another way. And with TAMUT’s Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences degree, there is. While the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS) is known for its degree completion benefits, what few people know is that it has also helped many people like Maria, Jocelyn, and Kenneth realize their dreams of becoming a public school teacher. How? By

helping students use the learning they’ve gained in the workplace to earn college credit, which shortens the path to earning a bachelor’s degree. The BAAS is also a degree that can be earned totally online. There’s no need to quit your job in order to attend classes.

If your story resembles Maria’s, Jocelyn’s, or Kenneth’s, let us help you find the right path to your dream. It’s never too late to follow your heart. There are children out there waiting for you. They need you to follow your dreams, so you can help them follow their own.

Many students complete their BAAS in 3 semesters – fall, spring, and summer – and then enter an alternative certification program to become teachers. These programs have designed creative paths to help people like Maria, Jocelyn, and Kenneth gain the knowledge and experience needed to become classroom teachers without having to start over with a new bachelor’s degree or quit their jobs in order to do student teaching. With the BAAS in hand, these adults have found that a classroom of their own is well within reach.

Contact Information:

According to Katheryn Hartshorn, clinical faculty member of the BAAS program and Teacher Certification Officer at A&M-Texarkana, completing the university’s Eagles Teach alternative certification program “can be done in as little as one full academic year.” She goes on to say that, “candidates are then ready to be recommended for standard teacher certification in Texas.”

A CHRISTMAS FELLOWSHIP KEVIN MYERS

“It’s time for a Christmas fellowship” was one of the very first front-door statements I received as pastor of Highland Park. The statement makes sense considering I was asked to be the pastor of our fellowship on the first Sunday of December, and a church-wide Christmas fellowship had been part of the congregation’s tradition for many years. That evening, we gathered for what turned out to be a very inspirational time as we participated in the Hanging of the Greens service. Many churches hold such a service to begin the Advent season, but this particular service was a first for me. I was like a kid in a candy store. My own Christmas traditions and decorations glowed even brighter with the introduction of new worship elements found in this beautiful service. I left the celebration knowing in my heart that we don’t share enough of these moments together. What made that evening so wonderful was the feeling we’d participated in a modern day parable and the sweet fellowship that followed that realization. That Hanging of the Greens was like a biblical parable because we used everyday items and relatable situations to present heavenly kingdom principles. The Christmas season is so full of traditions and symbols we can use to share the life-changing message of Jesus Christ. After all, the season is about His coming to be with us. It is easy to forget that, though, and if we’re not careful, the things we do at this most wonderful time of the year can unfold without a thought about our Christ.

056 ALT Magazine | December 2018

In my life, the Christmas season can certainly present such a paradox. There is no better time of the year, nor a time of the year I look forward to as much as Christmas. However, there are times the Christmas season brings with it an anxiety and even dread brought on by the hustle and bustle of the season’s demands. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. We must return to celebrating the gift we cannot give and begin celebrating the gift we can only receive, the gift of our Lord and Savior come to us. When we arrive at that place of celebration, it really is a time for Christmas fellowship. There is a great revelation in the biblical story of Christ’s birth found in Matthew 1:23: “Behold, the virgin shall be with Child and shall bear a son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which translated means, God with us.” God with Us. This is the Christmas story. He came to us. His birth led to His sacrificial death, and that loving act restored a sweet, intimate, deep fellowship with each believer. We call it Communion: an intimacy with God based upon the indwelling power of His Spirit. As Jesus promised us the Holy Spirit, let us not miss the most basic reality of that indwelling powerGod is still with us! This is the magic of Christmas. It’s not in the presents, but in His presence that we experience Christmas, and it doesn’t have to happen just in December! Larnelle Harris is one of my all-time favorite musicians, and he sings a Christmas song that sums up what I’m trying to say.

He braced the old ladder with all of His might And shouted, Dad have no fear As I stretched high to store the stockings and trim In the attic for another year We were busily packing our Christmas away While singing a carol we knew When I heard my son in innocence inquire Do we store away Jesus, too? All year long We must worship day by day All year long Tis the season to obey May the Christmas tree lights And the sleigh rides at night Remind us all to stay in God’s presence All year long When I was a very young man, I heard Bob Hope share the same idea. He said, “My idea of Christmas, whether old fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?” My heart’s desire for each of you this Christmas season is that a sweet fellowship with our Lord will lead to the love of God being shown to those around you. Our world so desperately needs to experience the Love, Peace, and Joy He has instilled in you. If each of us would love God and love others after spending sweet fellowship with Him, each day would shine as bright as Christmas, maybe even brighter. In closing, if I may borrow from another song – “although it’s been said many times, many ways, Merry Christmas to you!”

Fish Tales with Mike Brower Remembering... Today I was thinking about two friends and fishermen who have passed away, I think of them often, and since I do, they are never really gone. Bill Stueart and Allyn Howard were two of the best fishermen around. I had the good fortune to fish and learn from them for years. Bill and I fished the team circuits for years and did very well, and Allyn and I would talk fishing for hours on end dissecting every tournament we fished. I still catch myself talking to them when I'm fishing, hoping for some divine guidance or just some inspiration. I can even say that after pondering what they would do in any particular situation, things would just start popping into my head that I could try and sometimes it worked very well. A couple of years ago while fishing a Cowboy division BFL, I was catching some decent fish and a nice limit when everything just stopped. For the next 30 minutes, I couldn't buy a bite. I jokingly said what would Allyn do when a Rattle Trap came to mind. Now if you know me at all, you know I loathe traps. I hate them so much there are only three in my boat. I sat down tied one on and in the next hour culled three of my fish, getting a nice sixth place check. At Toledo Bend, after having a bad practice, a picture of Bill popped into my head saying, "you can throw that crankbait all day or catch some fish on your jig." Well after fighting the feeling for a couple hours, I switched and fishing got better.... much better. Allyn and Bill had their strengths and fortunately for me they were not mine. Because they were not mine, I could always ask the question, "What would ____ do?" And sometimes they answered. I still miss them both and know we will get to fish together again one day. Until then, we can still talk.
