I truly believe God blessed me with two of the best children anyone could wish for.

Dads are special. They teach us so many things. My dad taught me that hard work brought about lots of rewards, from moving up the ladder, to the support of those who appreciated what you did, to happiness when you know you did something well. I can remember times when my dad had back problems and my mom would help him get into his truck in the morning to go to work, and he would have his employees at the office waiting to help him get out. That work ethic stuck with me – and I have tried to instill it in my own children. I believe I have done a good job of passing on many of the tidbits of wisdom that he shared. One of the many blessings in life I have had was having my children. I truly believe God blessed me with two of the best anyone could wish for. Although there are always bumps in the road, they are amazing, intelligent, hard-working

adults that I am proud to say are mine. They were blessed with two dads. Although divorce is not always easy, sometimes parents make it more difficult. I chose to not be that parent. When my divorce was final, I was determined that my children would not suffer because of me. They were encouraged to be a part of their father’s life. In fact, they were allowed to go back and forth between homes whenever they chose. Although we had “standard visitation,” we never stuck to it. Because of that, my kids grew up knowing that they had two sets of parents who cherished them. They have siblings that love them and a large extended family that takes part in every celebration or sad event that occurs in their lives. When we talk about family gatherings, it’s not just me, Mike and the kids – it’s the extended family that is invited. Everyone is welcome – and everyone comes. I hope that this Father’s Day your children see how wonderful their father is and how much they can learn from him. One day their children will be able to pay that forward and teach their children the same. Happy Father’s Day!

Why is it so hard to describe someone you love so much? There really are no words.

No one ever lets you forget that you look like your dad.

We had a surprise birthday party one year for my dad. Milestone birthdays tend to bring our friends and family together and it was time to “Roast” ol’ Glen Jones! As I sat there pondering what in the world I was going to say, I realized that things weren’t going as planned. No one was saying anything negative about my dad. We kept telling each other to bring on the trash talk, but it was just compliment after compliment. What happened that day is really a reflection of who he is as a person. Dad, I wish I could find the words that could compare to everything you have done for me. I am so thankful each and every day to have a dad like you. There is no one in this world that even compares. Thank you for loving me, providing for me and just being a best friend. Happy Father’s Day, I love you.

On June 9, 2009, Kent Stephenson was 80 feet in the air practicing a motocross jump for a Pro-AM national event when his bike’s motor locked up, and he crashed to the ground. “I just remember that the accident truly sank in when they unloaded me from the helicopter at the hospital. The sun was so bright I couldn’t see

anything until we were inside, and I could open my eyes. When I did, I saw my reflection in the metal ceiling and saw the knee braces on my legs. I realized then I couldn’t move anything from the chest down and that I was going to be paralyzed for the rest of my life,” Kent says. “When the doctors came in and were telling me

Kent Stevenson that it was true, it was very emotional and hard to deal with. My life was completely changed. I was told I would be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life.” Kent grew up in Mount Pleasant, Texas. At the time of his accident, he was twenty-one years old and working as an operator for the family business, Stephenson Dirt Construction. In his free time, he loved duck and deer hunting, and preparing for his dream of racing motocross. He did weight and cardio training during the week, practiced at different tracks across Texas, and did maintenance or prep work on his dirt bikes to get ready for upcoming races. “I remember thinking after the accident that I was just beginning my lifelong dream of racing motocross, and in one day, it was taken away from me,” Kent said. The first few days after Kent’s accident were extremely hard. For Kent, it was an “emotional rollercoaster.” On the third day, Kent had an especially difficult time in the ICU, and some members from a local church came to pray over him. “During that prayer, the preacher called out all the doubts and fears that I had in my head that I hadn’t mentioned to anyone,” Kent says. “The preacher said that if I would just give it all to Him that he would pull me through this, and I said out loud, ‘I give it all to you Lord.’ I felt God lift me from the bed, and I visioned shattered pieces coming back together and him laying me back down. From that moment on I have been blessed with a sense of

time when they have let me down.”

For Kent, faith had always been a part of his life, but up until that experience, it had existed more as a moral compass than anything else. “This was my first supernatural experience, as I guess you could call it,” Kent says. “It changed me. From that point on, my faith reached a different level. People ask me all the time, ‘How can you be so happy?’ and I say, ‘Well, I’m not dead, and I’m pretty happy about that! I’m still supporting my family and doing many of the things I want to do.’” After the accident, Kent spent several weeks in a Dallas hospital before transferring to Craig Hospital in Denver, which was known for taking new steps in helping paralysis patients. He stayed there for several months, and then, he transferred to Frazier Rehab Institute in Kentucky. Over the next year, he took part in physical therapy, cardio and weight training, and pool therapy. With trainers, Kent developed several interesting workouts that helped him make small improvements. While he felt like he was gaining muscle mass, he still nowhere near his goal of walking again. “Even though they told me there was no chance at all that I would ever walk again, this was always my goal,” Kent says. “This was where my family and friends were extremely important in my recovery. Anytime I came to an obstacle that I wasn’t able to conquer, they have been there to help me overcome it. I would just like to give a huge thank you to all of them. They are always there for me when I need them. There has never been a

Everytime Kent faced something new, he remembered a motto his dad always used to say, “Don’t say can’t because can’t never could.” These words stayed with Kent as he learned new ways to approach the difficulties that his paralysis presented. “Even I started feeling like I couldn’t do something, I just realized that I had to figure it out. I can do it; I just may not be able to do it like I did before. I had to figure out my own way,” Kent says. Kent’s other constant supporter was his girlfriend, Misti Richeson. The two had only been dating for four months before Kent’s accident, but she stayed by his side through the whole process. Even while in nursing school, Misti would fly to Kentucky to see Kent and his progress. “Misti has been there with me from the very beginning; she’s never left my side,” Kent says “She’s helped carry me through a lot of times in my life.” Around the same time when Kent felt like he had “peaked” in his current therapies, Kent was approached by two head researchers who were looking for participants in a research trial in epidural stimulation. It involves implanting a stimulation device over the dura — the thick membrane that protects the lower part of the spinal cord. Controlled by a handheld remote the size of a smartphone, the stimulator “awakens” the patient’s nerve cells and provides signals that would otherwise come from the brain,

I had to decide whether or not I wanted to go back home with my family and Misti or be committed to staying in Kentucky for another two years for the trials and put my whole life on standstill,â&#x20AC;? Kent says. Kent went home for two weeks to think over the proposal and while he was there, he attended church. The same pastor that had prayed over Kent in the hospital had just returned from a mission trip with the church youth, and they were giving their testimonies. At the end of the service, they asked for anyone who needed prayer to come forward. Kent went to the front of the church. At first, he felt two people praying over him, but as he peeked open his eyes, he realized the entire church was praying over him. When it was over, Kent felt the

Kent Stevenson same happiness as he did that day in the hospital. “I knew my next step was to enlist in the trial, and so I went back and did it,” Kent says. Kent went through surgery and countless tests before he was ever able to try to move anything. One day, they finally said that Kent could call out a movement and try to make it. He called out his left leg, felt the charge moving from his back up his leg and it moved! “The experience was mind-blowing!” Kent says. “I just kept thinking, ‘Did that actually happen?’ I kept asking them if I could do it again. Honestly, as the researchers were watching me and witnessing the tests, I could tell in their voices that they didn’t expect anything to happen and because of that, I didn’t expect anything. Then, it did. This is such a unique experience being cut off from parts of your body and then getting some of that back. It was amazing. No one believed it was possible.” Kent’s decision to go through the process changed his life. The program is now called The Big Idea. According to their website, they are a “first-of-its-kind campaign aimed at propelling the paralysis community into a new era of groundbreaking research. It’s a movement to transform what it means for individuals to live with a spinal cord injury.” Their website chronicles the story of Rob Summers, the first man to test this new technology. In a 2011 study, researchers described how epidural stimulation allowed Summers to stand and move his legs.

Kent and two other patients were the subjects of a second successful study. Now, the project is seeking funding to test epidural stimulation on 36 more patients. The website states that all of “the four men observed huge improvements in their ability to control autonomic functions and move their toes, feet and legs on command. This recovery challenged the notion that the spinal cord, once damaged, could never be repaired and signaled an unprecedented breakthrough for the field, as well as new hope for the millions living with paralysis.” Even the ability to move and stand for an hour a day can help patients avoid

muscle atrophy and heart problems. “The stimulator has changed my life drastically,” Kent says. “It has helped me regain control of things that were once told to me that I would never be able to do again. For instance, I am now able to move my legs, feet, toes, and independently stand. I can work out now and go hunting, fishing and trailing. I feel really good. Sometimes I forget I still have a wheelchair.” In February 2015, Kent decided to plan a special proposal for Misti. With the help of a special standing frame, Kent was standing outside with a bouquet when Misti pulled in from work. Rose petals led inside the house. “She just kept saying, ‘What are you doing outside?’” Kent says. “Then, inside I had her parents, her sister and my parents. We had three dogs, and I put them in shirts that said, ‘Will,’ ‘You,’ ‘Marry Me?’ The family released them one at a time, and they did perfectly. They walked right down the aisle! Then, I pulled a ring out of my back pocket. She was so surprised and happy. She kept saying, ‘Are you serious?’” The two were married March 12, 2016, at Elk Meadow Game Ranch in Dekalb, Texas. Kent’s friend, Marcos Sanchez, with MS Custom Welding, built a custom frame on a swivel that would allow Kent to stand as his wife walked down the aisle towards him. It also allowed him to stand for their first dance. “The frame that Marcos built allowed me to turn while I was standing. I could actually turn and face Misti when she walked down the aisle, and we could turn and face the preacher without me having

She could spin me when we danced, and I could spin her when we danced. Also, it kept me the same height I naturally would be when I stood. That was what was so special about the frame. In the end, it all worked out perfectly, and it was the perfect day!” The Stephensons now reside in Mt. Pleasant and Kent works as a supervisor for Stephenson Dirt Construction. “The thing I love about my job is watching the foundation take place,” Kent says. “We come into places sometimes that you can’t even stand without sinking in mud. When we are done, there’s a stable foundation ready for the building to be built on. It reminds me of another motto I was raised on, ‘To be able to build anything and progress in life, you must have a stable foundation first.’ As time went on after my accident, my stable foundation with my faith, my family, my friends and my wife, allowed me to get stronger. Kent’s next goal is to become his dad and run their family company. “You know, someone in my position shouldn’t be where I am as supervisor of a company,” Kent says. “But technology has changed so much for me. Now only does the stimulator help me, I also have a lift that can put me in the equipment on the job. People tell me all the time that it inspires them when they see me out there, but what they don’t know is that I don’t always have perfect days. I get down, and their kind words lift me up. When I hear that, it encourages me just as much as seeing me encouraged them. They are paying it back in a way.”

of this life-changing event and he wants to increase awareness for The Big Idea promoted by the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation so that funding can be raised to help others have the same opportunities Kent has had. “I just want everyone to know that no matter how bad your circumstances seem, as long as you put your faith in the right place and have a positive outlook on life, you can achieve the goals that you set for yourself in life,” Kent says, “I just think back to when it all started and how I thought my life was done. But honestly, that was just the beginning. My life has been fun, out-going, and adventurous ever since June 9 2009, the day I broke my back and everything changed.”

LOL Have you ever been on a blind date? Yes, and she was a great person, but we just weren’t compatible. What are your hobbies and interests? I like to go hunting and fishing. I love the

outdoors, but most of all I love to go out with my friends on a Saturday night and dance ‘til the sun comes up. Do you have any children? No, but it is very important. I would have to say that my kindness is a talent in this day and age where people don’t seem to appreciate all of the small things any more. With my disability, most people think I would stay home and hide but I’m very outgoing! What is on your bucket list? I want to go skydiving more than anything. I want to see the Statue of Liberty and go to the beautiful state of Alaska because it has great hunting and fishing.

What accomplishment are you most proud of? Overcoming my fear of Cerebral Palsy, and not letting it keep me from living my life to the fullest. What have you not found but would like to have in a relationship? Trust and stability. With my condition I worry that a girl will loose interest, so I have to work extra hard and I want her to work just as hard and love me for who I am. Do you think you are ready for marriage? Yes I am willing to get married, but I want to be sure that she is the right one and take it slow. Why would girls think you are an eligible Bachelor? I have been told that I am kind and very giving to others. I love my family and I treat my mother with the upmost respect. They say how you treat your mother is how you will treat your spouse. Tell us about yourself : I went to high school at Murfreesboro High and I went to college at Henderson State University. I’m an assistant manager at Walmart in Hope, Arkansas. I’ve been with Walmart for 4 1/2 years. My ideal mate would be: Someone with quite the personality. Some one who loves to laugh and that can take a joke as well as give one out. My worse dating experience I would have to say would be when I took a girl out on a date and she apparently had a warrant out for her arrest. I’ve never been on a blind date. I think they are actually pretty intriguing because you have no idea what you’re going into. What are your hobbies and interests? Watching NFL football. After all, I am a guy, lol. I’m big into tv shows. I’m a Game of Thrones fan. Besides that, I like to interact with friends and family. I love going to watch movies. Do you have any children? I went to Texas High School and then UCA in Conway for a bit before coming back home to finish my degree in Business at A&M here in Texarkana. When I find something I like, I tend to stick with it...which is why I’ve had the same job at Northridge Country Club since I was 19 as the Banquet Captain there. The work is enjoyable and beats being stuck in a cubicle all day. I think I’ve worked more weddings than possibly anyone in town, lol. My parents have been together happily since 7th and 8th grade, so I couldn’t have asked for a better example of love. The older I get, the more I realize just how high of a standard they have set and how rare they’re relationship is. It’s no guarantee that you’ll find someone in this life and live happily ever after. The possibility of that reality of never finding someone I’d say is the toughest pill to swallow. That’s life I guess...because if there’s one thing I know, it’s that you can’t force love, no matter how much you want it. Describe your ideal mate: Ultimately, I have no physical ‘type’. As long as there’s an attraction there, we are good to go. I’ve been attracted to many different types of women so I try to remain open and not discriminate. be a soft, curvy woman with a face I could wake up to every morning with no make up on and just stare at how beautiful I think she is. Personality wise, I’d say I prefer a smart feminine woman but all I need really is just a woman who gets and appreciates me for who I am. When first meeting a woman, as a man, I’d say a woman’s looks are what’s going to jump out and grab my attention but if there’s no connection there, no spark, it’s not going to work no matter how physically attractive she may be. That connection is either there or not there. Can’t force it. Would I apply for ‘The Bachelor’? I’d say that would be one weird and wild experience...but I’d definitely give it a shot. I’ve seen it plenty of times so I know it’s possible to actually find real love, even with the cameras, lol. My worst dating experience story I guess would beeee.....I don’t know honestly. I haven’t dated a whole lot of women. It’s always been hard for me to find someone. The only real relationship I’ve ever had was with my exgirlfriend of two years. We broke up a couple years ago and it was definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever had to deal with. I don’t regret one day of it though. I like to think I am an easy going guy. I like to laugh and make other people laugh... Tell us about yourself : I graduated high school from Hooks High in 2009. I think a lot about how much different I would do things if I could go back but I am happy with the way my life is. I have been a welder for a few years now. I work for an industrial service company. We usually work inside of high octane fuel plats and oil refineries. I am currently working towards a masters degree in Political Science. After law school I plan to start practicing law as a business/corporate law attorney. Describe your ideal mate : I have always had a thing for blondes, although I don’t really have a specific preference. I am definitely a sucker for a girl with a nice smile and pretty eyes. Although physical attraction is kind of important, personality is a huge deal for me. I like a girl that knows how to have a good time but also knows how to take care of business. Personality wise I am gonna have to say I prefer a funny, down to earth, smart girl with a big heart. Would you ever apply for “The Bachelor” tv show? Would I sign myself up for the actual TV show? I would if Kate Upton or Rachael McAdams were on there! What is your worst dating experience story? My worst experience would have to be the time I went on a date with this girl that I had been introduced to through mutual friends...when I say introduced I mean it was basically a blind date. HAHA! I was probably 19 at the time. We exchanged a few text messages and the night we hung out we went to a high school football game. It was raining so hard and my best friend just so happened to show up. We all sat in the rain and watched the game for about 20 minutes. None of the 3 of us had an umbrella or anything else for that matter. She never once said anything finally I decided to ask if she wanted to leave...she looked at me like I was a

complete idiot (I don’t blame her at all for that!). We got to my truck SOAKED! I don’t really remember much of what happened after that except that I took her home and we didn’t talk for YEARS. That was definitely the worst and most embarrassing date I have ever been on. Her and I are actually friends now and have joked about the occasion a few times. Have you ever been on a blind date? Yes I have. A few actually. They’re ok. I don’t prefer them, but I’m not opposed to them either. What are your hobbies and interests? I really like to play golf. I am not the best but I love to play. I also play amateur professional football for the Warriors. Football has always been a passion of mine. We just won the Division Championship recently. Do you have any children? No. I don’t have any kids yet. I love kids and have dated a couple women with kids, but I don’t have any of my own. It would have to be important for my future wife to love/want kids. I have one daughter, her name is Cambry and she is two years. She lives in Seymour, TX, with her mother. I tear up the roads every other weekend to see her. It is absolutely the highlight of my month to be with her, hear her laugh, and get her sweet cuddles. It is very important for my spouse to love her and be willing to help me raise a sweet young lady.

Are you a pet person? Absolutely a dog person. I have a dog named Coty. He is a huskey and I like to take him on the road with me every now and then when I meet with customers. He loves to ride in the back of my truck. The ladies tend to like him too. I hope my spouse was a pet person. I have had a huskey or two in my life since I was about 10 years old. know when a dirty diaper or a missing baby doll can throw off the entire day. What have you not found but would like to have in a relationship? Someone ready to tackle this crazy thing called life. TEXARKANA ARKANSAS CAREER AND TECHNOLOGICAL CENTER You might say that Anthony Bennett was born into the auto-body industry. His dad, Tony Bennett, has been in the industry for 30 years, including being the Collision Repair Instructor at Texarkana College for 18 years and owning his own shop for many years. Anthony has memories of being in his dad’s shop when he was only six years old. He began “working” for him as young as kindergarten— learning and practicing the trade for $3.00 an hour. His first big project was a truly custom truck that he and Tony started his 8th grade year and worked on together. They had an ’89 Chevy Silverado and a ’94 Chevy Silverado and built a truck with parts from both. Three years and massive amounts of customizing and body work took place to construct the perfect body. The custom paint

job was impressive to say the least. Anthony recalls that it took 24 hours straight to paint; they took turns sleeping in the vehicle while masking the flames. It was that project that really ignited his passion for the trade. After high school, Anthony went to work at Red River Army Depot but did custom work on the side. He completes flawless collision repair, but especially loves custom paint work. He has since carried that love over to Arkansas High School’s Collision Repair program. In March 2013, Anthony left RRAD to begin his teaching career at Texarkana Arkansas Career and Technological Center located at Arkansas High School. Mr. Bennett, as he is known to his students, was immediately flooded with ideas and the determination to share his passion with his students. He worked tirelessly that summer (and all those since) to prepare his curriculum and reenergize the program. He quickly learned about a national organization called SkillsUSA-- a partnership of students, teachers, and industry professionals that work together to ensure that America has a skilled workforce. It helps to prepare students for careers in technical, skilled, and service occupations. One of SkillsUSA’s programs involves annual state and national competitions for students to demonstrate their occupational and leadership skills. Students compete for a chance to win scholarships, tools, etc. Students are required to take a written test, write an estimate, interview, and submit a

resume, in addition to performing technical skills. Repairing vehicle panels and operating complex equipment, such as a computerized measuring system are just a few examples. For the past 4 years, Anthony’s students have been State Champions in either Automotive Refinishing or Collision Repair. In 2013, Oscar Diaz won 1st place in Collision Repair. The following year, Logan Hickson and William Sackett competed in the Automotive Refinishing Competition, winning 1st and 2nd place, respectively. Logan used his scholarships to attend Lincoln College of Technology in Dallas, Texas, to study collision repair. William Sackett applied his scholarships to the Motorcycle Mechanical Institute in Orlando, Florida, with plans to become a motorcycle mechanic. This past April was no exception. Bennett accompanied the maximum of 4 students to compete in Hot Springs. In Automotive Refinishing, senior Dylon Cotton not only won 1st place, but also achieved the highest score in competition history! Taylor Johnson, also a senior, placed 2nd behind Cotton with the third highest score in competition history. Dylon and Taylor even outscored the college level competitors. Colton Conner and Mitchell Rostollan, placed 3rd and 5th in the Collision Repair division. Colton Conner and Taylor Johnson were the 2015 winners as well; Conner won 1st and Johnson, 2nd. This is the fourth year Bennett will take his 1st place winner to the SkillsUSA National Competition. In June, he and Dylon Cotton will travel to

Louisville, KY, for Dylon to compete in the multi-million-dollar event that occupies a space equivalent to 16 football fields. In 2015, there were more than 6,000 contestants in 100 separate events. Nearly 1,500 judges and contest organizers from labor and management make the national event possible every year. Bennett prepares his students not only for competitions, but also for post-graduation work force. His students learn many skills that are applicable to a rewarding career in Collision Repair as well as other avenues and general automotive knowledge. Even the students that don’t choose collision repair as their profession will take away lessons in hard work ethic and leadership. The program at AHS does work for the public, so the students work the whole process from start to finish. You may have noticed some of their custom paint projects they have completed around town: an Arkansas vs. Texas truck owned by Jim Lewis and a Dallas Cowboy themed truck owned by John May. Both of these trucks involved a huge amount of body work that was completed by many students. Dylon Cotton and Taylor Johnson painted the trucks under Mr. Bennett’s guidance. Several of his former students have gone on to extend their learning at technical colleges and some are currently working in body shops locally and around the nation. ANCHORED IN THE SPIRIT: PASTOR DAVID FARREN PASSIONATELY LEADS AS HEAD OF ANCHOR CHURCH TEXARKANA

On the day I arrive to interview Pastor David Farren, the lights of the church were still out due to the previous night’s storm. Yet, entering the sanctuary of Anchor Church of Texarkana, the room was unexpectedly cool, reminiscent of Isaiah 4:6, which reads, “And there will be shelter and shade from the heat of the day, and refuge and hiding place from the storm.” Two doors opened at either ends of the building cast a large shingle of light and a gentle breeze inside sufficient enough for us to converse. As he interacts with a small group of members there to still gather for church service later that afternoon, it was clear that his passion and delight for the Lord was genuine and pure. “It’s not a job to me; it’s the heart God has given to me to love people and grow in the Lord.” After graduating from Texas High School, Pastor Farren attended Texarkana College and later on became a 048 ALT Magazine | June 2016

paramedic for LifeNet. The son of a preacher, he felt the call to preach early on. “About my mid-teen years I felt the calling in my heart for ministry.” Though he initially didn’t know whether he was being lead in the area of music or working with youth, he officially entered the ministry in 2000 as Associate Pastor of Student Ministry at Cross Pointe Baptist Church, which ironically, was housed in the same building as the Anchor Church is today. Yet, while others may consider this a mere coincidence, he sees the opportunity as divine intervention and validation in bringing his purpose full circle. Faced with uncertainty after his previous job ended abruptly in 2015, he prayed for God’s direction in his life. Though he initially resisted others suggestions that he start a church, eventually, he relinquished his will to the Spirit, and each step began to beautifully unfold into fruition. “The moment we said yes, [God] started to open doors,” he says. What began as a small congregation of 42 people grew to a group of over 100 gathering to meet

Anchor Church at Silvermoon downtown. Yet, by the time the church officially launched on January 3rd at the Texarkana Convention Center, the body had reached numbers averaging upwards of 380 people. When someone suggested the current building off N. Kings Highway once he and his wife, Meredith, began looking for a more permanent location for the church, they were unsure if they would be able to secure the building. Yet, Pastor Farren credits it all to God’s way and strategic will. “God purposed this building for His work. This has nothing to do with me. Every bit of it goes and is because of God. Every bit of the glory goes back to Him.” Pastor Farren describes the church’s main mission as simply humbling themselves to allow God to work within and amongst them in order to have His way. “We really try to stay invisible, get out of God’s way, and let Him move,” he says. “We try to get people to understand who God is and how He thinks about [us]. That encounter causes you to act, to serve, to tell people about Jesus and grow. There’s a hunger [here] and a big part of discipleship is wanting people to grasp the relationship God desires from all of us, from little kids to adults, to grow ourselves and to grow each other.” The church’s name and acronym (A.C.T.) was inspired by a conversation he and his wife had regarding the concept of acting upon God’s favor. “We were speaking about what God was leading our hearts to do and how it is not for us to sit and lavish in the grace of God, but

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. -Hebrews 6:19 how it [should] compel us to act,” he says. “It was like a light went on.” For this reason, the church adopted Hebrews 6:19 as their official scripture. The church previously baptized eleven new members on one Sunday, including a former atheist. One visitor recounted how they drove by the church one Sunday and was compelled to slow down because of how strongly they felt the Spirit of God. “The presence of [the Lord] is thick here. We are seeing ‘life-change’ every week as God encounters His people,” Pastor Farren says. “Seeing God move in people’s lives is indescribable. Lives are changed and touched when we get out of the way and let God [work].” Many people have a sincere desire to seek God, but do not quite know how. Pastor Farren suggests that the key to knowing God is the same as in any relationship. “It’s all about communication,” he says. “There are so many ways He communicates but we don’t see it. We miss it. He uses people to speak and minister in our lives. Like a baby growing up, at first you don’t know a lot, but the more that you depend on Him, the more He brings about a craving for Him. You have to surrender to it. People get frustrated because they can’t hear or see Him, but it’s a process.” ALT-Mag.com | June 2016 049

Anchor Church Some believers feel that it is not necessary to attend church services. While Pastor Farren asserts that attending church doesn’t necessarily define a believer’s faith, he does believe in the significance of being in the presence of other believers. “There’s something about being around other believers that is encouraging. It’s about being able to see what they’re going through in the presence of the Lord, getting fed, and letting the Lord speak into your life,” he says. “There’s not a checklist based on how many times you miss church, but [attending] let’s you celebrate what God is doing in your own life with other believers. Church to me is a family, people that are there for you and love you and have your back. [Not attending church] you miss that comfort and unity.” In a time defined by increasing conflict and uncertainty within our nation and community, Pastor Farren encourages people to be reassured by God’s strength and security. “[The current events] don’t take God by surprise,” Pastor Farren says. “He’s dealt with this before. All He wants is for us to depend on Him and seek His wisdom. He’s not trying to leave us out here on our own.” Pastor Farren specifically references Isaiah 33:6, which assures that God will be the “stability of our time”. He cites the current election season as one example of people searching for and being concerned with feeling protected and secure. “The key word is ‘stability’. Even people that don’t believe in the Word are still looking to others for stability and substance. Have faith in God that He’ll take care of us. He’s still moving and working even if we can’t see it.” Overall, Pastor Farren encourages everyone to visit Anchor Church Texarkana, where their official motto is, “Drawn by God. Compelled by Grace. United in Love.” A non-denominational congregation, he ensures that visitors will feel welcomed by the warmth and unity the church provides. “I’d like to invite anyone to come and experience what God does at Anchor Church. So many families don’t go to church because they haven’t found that fit. We just might be that fit. It’s exciting. We are just a church of imperfect people seeking to get out the Holy Spirit’s way to see God move and change lives. 1 Tell us about yourself. How long have you been a dad? I have been a dad since 12/16/2008. I am the father of two beautiful little girls. I am currently engaged to the love of my life and planning for the wedding on 10/01/2016. I have been a volunteer fire fighter for Simms for several years and decided I wanted to pursue this as my career. I just graduated this past month from the Texarkana College Fire Academy and I am now working to obtain my EMT-B so that I can pursue my goal of becoming a certified fire fighter. I love Chevy trucks and living in the country. What are your most important goals as a father? It is important to set the girls up for future success. I also always want them to know how much I love them and care about them even when I have to discipline. As a father, it will be to their advantage if they learn how to show and give respect to those that deserve it and be well mannered. Children must be able to dream about what they would like to accomplish in life. They need the guidance to be able to strive to achieve whatever their passion in life turns out to be and they must be given that support to choose the road they will take in life. What are your dreams for your children? As any father who loves their children of course the most important thing I wish is that they always are happy in life. What advice would you give to new fathers starting out? Kids can always challenge you and your decisions. They are changing daily and along with those changes will come some tough love. Kids need to know that they are loved unconditionally through all the challenges both good and bad that they will experience. If you could take your family anywhere on vacation, where would you take them and why? If I could take my family on the vacation of a lifetime it would definitely be to Alaska. I want my family to see the natural beauty and wilderness that surrounds Alaska. There are many things to see and do for entertainment. You can ski, go to the hot springs, see the ocean, snowmobiling, fishing and hunting. These are all natural wonders that will last a lifetime. What is the best part about being a dad? The best part of being a dad is receiving the same unconditional love that is given and watching them grow and learn.

2 Tell us about yourselves? How long have you been a dad/step dad? K-My name is Kenny Hunt. I work for an energy efficiency company, and I’m also a member of the Texarkana Jeep Junkies. I have been a father since Kaylee was born, December of 2006. T- My name is Toby Moses. I first became a dad 7 years ago when I met a beautiful woman with a beautiful blue-eyed baby girl. I fell in love with them and they let me be a part of their family. I guess my family defines me.

Father’s Day Mom’s note: I could not choose just one all-star dad from these two men. The relationship we have grew from hard work. We put aside all differences to better the lives of our children. These two get along so well. You would never guess that Kaylee is not Toby’s biological daughter or Wyatt is not Kenny’s biological son. Our children know that they always have three parents that love them unconditionally, and can call on any of us if they need anything at all. I can only hope that all blended families can one day share the same type of relationship we have. No fuss, no fights, just love.

What advice would you give to new fathers starting out? K- There’s no formula for being a father. Communicate. Make sure your child is never afraid to tell you anything. No need for baby talk. I have always talked to Kaylee with respect like she was an adult. She grew up doing the same. T- I would say it’s the little things. Kids will be disappointed, you will get impatient. But all of the little things add up to great memories. Enjoy the little things.

What are your most important goals of a father? K- My goal is just to be the best I can be. To make my child(ren) able to have every opportunity they can to have the best life possible.

If you could take your family anywhere on vacation, where would you take them? K- Wherever Toby wants to pay for.

T- To teach my kids the value of family and to always respect and appreciate their mother.

T- I suppose Disney World. I can only imagine I’d be miserable, but I know my wife and children would love it.

What do you want your child to remember most about growing up? K- I want her to remember having a loving, nurturing family unit. One that knows everyone makes mistakes, but we accept those and learn from them.

What is the best part about being a dad? K- The best part of being a dad is just that; Being a dad. What I have learned from these kids is more than I could ever teach them. It’s seeing them learn, and grow into who they are. Watching them develop into their own personalities, seeing them learn from their mistakes, and teaching them not to give up. The coolest thing about it all is that with all of my flaws, somehow…. I’m still a hero to a special little girl and boy.

T-I hope they always remember the love we all share and no matter what, they make me proud.

Tell us about yourself. How long have you been a dad? I became a father when I married my beautiful wife in 2002. At that time, I also got two beautiful daughters. We also gained two boys in 2008 when our nephews moved in with us. We officially adopted them last year. Tell us your most memorable moments as a father. The times I remember the most are when I could share in the successes of my children and see the happiness they bring. A few moments that come to mind are escorting both of my daughters on homecoming courts, moving them to college for the first time, and winning baseball tournaments while coaching my sons. What are/were your most important goals as a father? To raise independent, confident children who are well prepared to tackle their futures. What examples have you had in your life that made you the all-star dad you are today? When I was young, I used to spend a lot of time with my dad outdoors camping, hunting, and fishing. I really enjoyed those times and want my kids to remember similar times. What advice would you give to new fathers starting out? My advice to new fathers would be to influence your children to be the type of people you envision them to be, but to understand that they have to choose their own path. You also have to understand that the path they choose may not be the path you would have chosen for them. I have tried to provide support for my children as they start their own lives without demanding that they do it like I would have done it.

Brad Thompson is the father of two boys, 6 and 3. His goals for his children include: Raising them in a Godly home and introduce them to Jesus Christ as their savior. Second, to raise them to have confidence in themselves in all that they do, and to know that they can achieve anything they set their mind to. Next, to encourage them to be civic minded and to help others, to always use their gifts and talents for the greater good. His advice for new dads? Being a father is a full-time job on top of a full-time job. Go all in! Whatever your kids might be into, go all in. Help them and lead them. Get on to your kids early on so that when they get older you don't have to. He says the best part about being a dad is being able to celebrate their successes and to walk with them through their failures.

Blake Roberts has been a dad for 5 years to one daughter and one son. The best days of his life were when his children were born. His goals for his children include having his kids grow up in a respected home and follow God along the way. His advice to new dads? Do what the wife tells you! If he could take his family on vacation anywhere it would be to Disney Land. Why? “Because my wife would love it! Terry Lee Tussey’s daughter, Ava Grace Tussey, was born on Nov. 26, 2015. His most memorable moments are taking Ava swinging for the first time. His goals for Ava include: raising her to be God fearing and respectful. Terry Lee said his family is all about family time. They raised him to know God first, then family. He wants his daughter to remember they love her and try to spend every waking second with her. His advice to other new dads? Spend as much time with your little one as possible. Father’s Day

7 LARRY WELCH Larry joined the National Guard in 1965 and was stationed in Fort Polk, LA for 2 years. He then joined the Navy and was stationed on the USS Guadalupe AO32 fleet oiler where he ran the oiler up and down the coast of Vietnam for 3 years. Larry discharged and started a family in 1970 to his daughter Delita (D.D). In 1972, his son, Samuel (Sammy) was born. His most memorable moments as a dad were watching his kid’s accomplishments as they were growing up from band, to sports to graduation and then marriage. Larry encouraged his kids to be honest & to treat others the way that they would want to be treated. He just wanted his kids to know that he would always be here for them and wanted to instill good values in them. His advice to new fathers? Always say I LOVE YOU and give HUGS to your kids because you never know when you might not have them to HUG. Make memories with your kids...memories last a lifetime. His favorite part of being a dad is having a loving son and daughter that LOVE HIM as much as HE LOVES THEM!

BRANDON BYRGE Brandon Byrge has been a father for two years. His most memorable moments are when his step-son decided to call him “daddy” and when his younger son started rolling over and holding his own bottle (he’s only 5 months old). Those are just a few of the many. His goals as a father are to instill memories of being loved and cared for as a child, to always be only a phone call away if either of his children need me, and to provide both of his boys with a loving, stable home. The greatest influence he has is his own father. “He was a wonderful man who was married to my mom for thirty years before he passed in 2010. Having such an amazing father made me want to treat my children the same way he treated me. I’ve come to find out being a good parent in general isn’t an easy job, but looking back and remembering his ways have helped tremendously.” His advice to new fathers starting out? “Have a lot of patience...A LOT. Teach your children every chance you get, even if it’s the smallest thing. Father’s Day DILLON FOREBACK Dillon Foreback is twenty three years old and has been a dad for two and a half years. His most memorable moments as a father is seeing his daughter for the first time, holding her, the first time she laughed, and going fishing with her for the first time. His goals for his daughter include a secure and stable home; to show her all the love he has for her. He hopes she grows up to have a happy and healthy family of her own; “to accomplish all the things I never could; to chase her dreams and never give up.” His advice to new dads? Cherish every moment because in the blink of an eye it will be gone. The best part about being a dad for him is seeing his daughter’s smiling face every day no matter the mood he’s in. Spending time with her is better than anything else this world has to offer.

John Hirzel has two wonderful children with his beautiful wife, Jennifer. His daughter, Lydia Rae, is two years old and his son, John Luke, was just born on May 10, 2016. His most memorable moments as a father would have to be birth of his children. He says he will always remember and cherish the little things, though. He remembers when his daughter took her first steps, said her first words and counted to ten for the first time. His most important goal as a father is to raise his children to have a relationship with God. He strives to be a patient and understanding father, but also one that is respected and loved unconditionally by them. His advice to new fathers starting out? “Be present in everything you can. I work from home so I am able to catch the “little things” everyday. Children learn and grow so fast that if you are not present as a father it will pass you by. Something else I recommend that we do with my daughter is pray with her every evening. We let her pick three people or things she would like to pray for. It always amazes me the people and things she chooses to pray for.“

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE I don’t think we will see Wright Patman down to a level that resembles normal until the end of August. The high water makes fishing Patman somewhat of a challenge. The fish are still there, but you can’t get to most of them. So how do you fish a lake this high? Well, start with the basics. Try fishing the rocks at the dam or in the flooded camp grounds. If you fish the camp grounds, you better go slow on the trolling motor or you might break it off hitting a picnic table or a grill. If that’s not your bag, then you can position yourself out from the visible trees and bushes and fish the edge, or back off a little more and fish the bushes that are deeper under the water. If you still are not happy, then you can find the steeper banks where the fish can’t get too far in front of you and fish there. Not many of these type patterns will be very shallow, but the fish will be suspended in the bushes and you should be able to pick off some pretty nice fish. If none of the above described patterns pull your trigger, then there is no pleasing you and you will need to go somewhere else. There is going to be one thing all this high water is going to do and that’s help the spawn for all species of fish. Think about all the fry that have survived when most would have perished due to predation by other fish. This is the third year of high water during and after the spawn in as many years. Patman is going to be awesome in a year or two.

It may seem strange that a little child could perform random acts of kindness. However, if you were fortunate enough to have known Kylee Sullivan, you would not have found it strange at all. Kylee was only seven years old when she lost her life on June 11, 2010 in the awful flood at Albert Pike. She had a kind and gentle heart and to say that she loved animals was an understatement. We have taken in several animals that have been abandoned or neglected, or just wandered onto our place, and stole our hearts. Kylee worked hard in the kennels at our house cleaning them, watering the animals, and feeding them daily. This was her job, and she actually loved doing it! Kylee received an allowance for all her hard work, and donated every penny to the Texarkana Animal League. The total dollar amount donated by Kylee was $2,365.01. When we lost her she had $5.83 in her little “safe place” that was going to them. I still have that! So, yes, Kylee loved animals. In fact, The Kylee Sullivan Dog Park was dedicated in her memory. But her love reached out to everyone, no matter how young or how old or how sick or how different a person may be, she proudly referred to them as her “friends”. At Saint James Day School where she had just finished the first grade, we learned that she was referred to as their “little peacemaker” and that title fit her to a T. Like all children, Kylee loved to draw and write notes to those whom she loved. Those notes and drawings have been an integral part in helping her grandfather and I cope with this terrible loss. After she was gone we were desperate and we clung to our treasures knowing that there would be no more. And then we began to find these wonderful little notes that we had never seen before! We found them in our bibles and in hers, we found them hidden in whatnots throughout our home, we found them in our vehicle. We even found them in a piece of luggage that always held her things in case a quick trip presented itself. So, you see, even though Kylee was only seven, she was already performing her random acts of kindness that continue to fill our hearts today. ALT-Mag.com | June 2016 061

Random Acts of Kindness STORY OF THE MONTH I have always been blessed with some of the most amazing, generous parents and students, and today something happened that I just want to shout from the rooftops!

Today, we had a shaved ice truck come to our school, and the students were able to purchase a shaved ice for $2, $3, $4, or $5. I had some students bring money for each kind, but I also had students who didn’t bring money at all....but when it was our turn to get our cold treats everyone got the $5 cup. How did that happen you ask? Well, I had one student who chose to use HER BIRTHDAY MONEY to make sure everyone was able to enjoy the biggest shaved ice! She paid the difference for the ones who only paid $2, $3, and $4 and paid the whole amount for the ones who didn’t bring any money at all. She even made sure I was able to have one! This was all her idea. She did not want to be recognized in our class, but I couldn’t help myself. I just cannot get over the generosity of this 8 year old precious soul. She could have spent that money on toys for herself, but chose to use her money to make sure everyone else around her was happy. Even though I’m her teacher this year, she was my teacher today. In the midst of all the darkness, there is still so much good in this world, y’all!

Have the Money Talk Before Saying “I Do” It’s wedding season, and many couples are planning their walk down the aisle. So much planning goes into choosing the right venue, making a guest list, picking out the dress and planning the honeymoon. It’s easy to get caught up in the details and the bliss of it all. Before you do further planning for your “I Do’s,” though, make sure you and your future spouse have the money talk. Studies have shown that disagreements over money are a prime contributor to divorce for many couples. Talking about your finances before marriage can help prevent big money issues and arguments down the road. Like anything in marriage, you and your future spouse are bound to have different opinions on money. In fact, money is one of the most common topics for couples to fight about. How much you should spend on certain items, whether to put money aside for savings each month and even whether to use credit or debit to pay for purchases can create discord in the relationship. A common source of conflict I see regularly in marriage counseling are these three areas of money management: debt, saving and spending. Getting on the same page early on can help prevent these destructive money fights later. TALK ABOUT DEBT Before the wedding day, it’s essential that both partners be honest about any debt they are bringing into the marriage. This can include credit cards, student loans, a mortgage and car payments. If one partner has debt, the other partner will inevitably share in paying it down once they’re married. Sharing this information up front gives you the opportunity to work together as a team to devise a plan for paying it off.

STICK TO A BUDGET It’s a good idea to discuss how much income each of you makes on a regular basis. Once you have your income laid out, it will be easier to set and stick to a budget. Talk about how much you will allocate to extra spending such as clothes, entertainment and eating out, as well as how much you’ll want to put into a retirement or savings account each month. Talk about this and get on a system that both of you are comfortable using. The most important goal in having the money talk is for the two of you get on the same page. Be transparent in your finances and help set that tone for your marriage. Having the money talk is not the most fun or the most romantic thing you’ll do before the nuptials, but it needs to be done. Carve out some time to go over all the details. Talking about it now will help lead you to happily ever after later. When your marriage lasts a lifetime, you’ll be really glad you did.
