From the Publisher Mississippi. From my father's family in Florida, to my mother's family in Mississippi, we visited lots of areas -- and lived in a lot more, including Alabama, Georgia, Texas, South Carolina and Arkansas. Paper mills were our life and we followed them throughout the south as my dad "went up the ladder." Family was all we had since we moved sometimes every seven months. It was tough on the life of a young child, going from school to school. We made it though.
In January, everyone celebrates what will be coming up for the next twelve months. Whether it's new beginnings, continuing traditions, new loves in their lives, or whatever, it seems that everyone is positive that the new year will be better than the last one. For me, I hope that is true. This coming year, 2020, will definitely bring some changes in my life. With my children all grown up, living in different cities, I feel sure a lot of travel will be included in my plans. From northeast Texas, to Central Texas, to the border of Texas and Mexico, to the beach in Alabama, either my car or American Airlines will be moving me along! Family is everything and they seem to be everywhere! LOL When I was young, we traveled all over the place to visit family. Mostly, however, we spent time in Florida and
We now have so many ways to keep in touch that we never had as children. With facetime, facebook, cell phones, messenger -- and just about a billion other ways to communicate, it seems so much easier. I can talk to my kids and grandkids on a regular basis, see photos they post regularly, and keep up with what they are doing. Back in the day, we called maybe once a month to our family to check on them, wrote letters via USPS, and waited on responses. We had one black and white television, a camera that took black and white photos, and eventually a video recorder that was in color! What a wonderful thing that was! The changes that came every year were amazing as technology got better and better. I feel sure we will see even more changes in 2020. They will be more wonderful than before! I wish you the most wonderful New Year ever! May God bless you and yours!

Part-time fireman with Arkadelphia, Arkansas Fire Department and CEO/Founder of Brighter Tomorrow Foundation Johnathon is an activist, disabled war veteran, fireman, and he is the CEO/Founder of Brighter Tomorrow Foundation, a nonprofit organization with a 501(c)(3) that is recognized by the Secretary of State of Texas and Arkansas. “I chose to start the Brighter Tomorrow Foundation because I was and am determined to prove that anyone can accomplish their dreams,” Johnathon says. “Everything done with the Brighter Tomorrow Foundation is done from the heart.” Brighter Tomorrow provides health and wellness, prevocational and athletic training for kids who otherwise would not have the opportunity to explore their gifts or talents. Johnathon was inspired to provide this training because of his own experiences. “The most memorable moment in my career was graduating college because a lot of people didn’t believe I could with the early path in life I was traveling, and I, too, doubted myself at times,” Johnathon says. “The most important thing about the Brighter Tomorrow Foundation is that it dares people to dream, take a stand with others that are in battle against wrong, and to give back as you forget not of which you’ve come.”
Johnathon O. Khemet Boyce 010 ALT Magazine | January 2020
Johnathon describes his family as a village because he says he was that child who took an entire village to raise. On a “normal” day, Johnathon says his life consists of being the Creator’s steward by being a blessing to someone else. Not only is he the founder and CEO of Brighter Tomorrow, Johnathon is also involved in Toys for Tots and Pink Ride. “I spend my free time trying to implement strategic plans that can be implemented within reality for the benefit of humanity,” Johnathon says. “My life motto is, ‘If you are living your life for your own self gain, then when your life on Earth expires, you’ve created nothing worth dying for, so your life on Earth was in vain.’” Though Johnathon says his greatest struggle is failing to take time for himself, he does enjoy the time he gets to watch his favorite show, Blackish. His favorite weekends are spent giving Texas LTC classes. Johnathon considers his greatest accomplishment as making the needed sacrifices to put himself in a position to help others, but his future plans include finding more ways to serve. His goal for 2020 is to begin law school, and his New Year’s Resolution is to continue the things he’s started while building more in stone. “I would like to implement a solution to end homelessness, low income, and poverty in the next 10 years,” Johnathon says. “You can do whatever it is you want to do in life, but first, you must comprehend the difference between life and reality. It takes discipline, self love, and self motivation.”
Q&A with Johnathon 1. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? The best advice I have ever received was, stay hungry but remain humble! 2. What three words would you use to describe yourself? Blessed, humbled, and consistent. 3. What is your favorite food? Cheese pizza. 4. What is your favorite memory? When I was stationed in Fort Lee, Virginia and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. 5. Who is your personal idol? Fred Hampton Sr.

Commercial Realtor
Jerry Lynn Brewer 012 ALT Magazine | January 2020
Jerry Brewer worked with his sister Berta Brewer Stotts’ residential company for a little over a year when he decided to open his own commercial company in the early seventies. “I was convinced the people in commercial real estate would be smart, interesting, and fun, and that has proved to be true for 47 years,” Jerry says. “I would encourage anyone to try it.” For Jerry, the most important part of his business is providing strong customer service and honesty. One of the most memorable moments of Jerry’s career occurred when he received a call from a tenant asking him if they should purchase, for $200,000, a building they were leasing for $4,000 per month. “I said ‘Absolutely!’ Ten minutes later the building owner called and asked, ‘Should I sell my building for $200,000?’ I said, ‘Absolutely not!’ Jerry says. “A realtor is often dealing with opposing interests between buyer and seller and must be truthful, always.” In the next ten years, Jerry wants to further develop his business model and prepare to transition his company to new management where it would continue to grow and provide a secure, stable working environment for his business family. “We push everyone at NAI American Realty toward a specialty and provide the best back office support for our agents and staff,” Jerry says. “We work toward expertise in the principal categories of commercial real estate and tailor our service to fit where our clients are in their economic life cycle. The most important thing about my line of work is that every day offers an opportunity to help my clients make their lives better.” Jerry says that his greatest accomplishment is convincing his wife, Yulin, to marry him, and then having a perfect daughter, Shannon. “Yulin is truly a giver who works tirelessly for Salvation Army, regional rose garden clubs, and our church. She makes and serves soup in the winter to about 200 people each time,” Jerry says. “More people recognize me when Yulin is by my side. Shannon, a Chancellor’s Scholar, graduated from TCU and is in her second year of medical school. I really admire her.” On a normal day, Jerry wakes up and feeds their Chihuahua, Tea Cup and Shi Tzu, Bentley, and then the koi in their backyard fish
pond. He reads the Texarkana Gazette and his email while having coffee and fruit topped cereal, and then he goes to the office to work. He usually checks with Sherry Surratt, Office Manager, and Jeremy Saulsbury, Marketing Manager, first, to see if they need anything and to get an update on what is happening. Then he looks in on Dan DeMedio, Greg Phillips, John Vaughan and Mike Ingram to see what deals they are working on and to see if they need his help. “Then I either go to my office to make calls or leave to show property,” Jerry says. “I frequently enjoy lunch or dinner appointments with clients and usually celebrate with them when we close a deal.” Jerry is also involved with several local organizations. He is a member of the CHRISTUS Saint Michaels Foundation, and he also helps Yulin with her homemade beef stew for the outreach program at Saint Edward’s church where she has served every Monday in November and December for the past 13 years. Jerry’s favorite weekend activity is visiting his daughter and the museums and galleries in Fort Worth, Texas. He is learning Spanish and guitar, and loves movies, swimming, gardening, and reading. He and Yulin also love to travel. “For our 30th anniversary, we went to the airport in Shreveport and chose the destination based on where the weather was best,” Jerry says. “It happened to be Charlotte, North Carolina, where we had a wonderful weekend.” The best advice Jerry has ever received came from his father who always said, “Do it right the first time, and you won’t have to do it again.” This inspires his business where his goal for 2020 is to make conditions more favorable for everyone at NAI American Realty to grow professionally and prosper. “My advice for others who are seeking success in the area they are passionate about is to be honest, sincere and have fun while you work, and you will stand out from your competitors,” Jerry says. “See yourself from your customers’ point of view and do what you can to make their lives better.”
Q&A with Jerry 1. What has been your greatest struggle? “To be more direct. I am a little too trusting and too cautious about hurting others’ feelings.” 2. What is your favorite food? “Cornbread. It should be the national food.” 3. What is your favorite TV show? “We have been binge watching Blacklist.” 4. Who is your personal idol? “Elon Musk.” 5. What is your life motto? “To increase my capacity to care for others.”

Student Services and Business Development Coordinator for Red River Credit Union
Emily Annette Bright 014 ALT Magazine | January 2020
Emily started out her education path studying to be a teacher, and she planned to go into administration. With her current position at Red River Credit Union, she teaches financial literacy in our local schools. She also works directly with student tellers who work in Red River’s kiosk within Texas High School, Arkansas High School and Liberty Eylau High School. “With my business background and my passion for teaching/mentoring youth, this career is perfect for me!” Emily says. “I love the fact that one day I may be teaching 3rd grade and the next day I may be with high school students.” The most memorable moment Emily has had in her career so far was the day she was teaching seniors at Bloomburg High School. There were only about five of them, but they were all engaged in the lesson on money management. The conversation turned to questions about credit, so Emily spent some time teaching the students about credit. “We ran out of time. When the bell rang, the students were asking if they could just stay for another class period, of course the teacher told them no. The students then asked me if I was coming back,” Emily says. “It’s always memorable to me when students show immediately that what I’m teaching them is important to them, it reminds me that I am making an impact.” Emily wishes people knew more about the mission statement of Red River Credit Union. She says the most important part of their business is serving the members and community. “A credit union is built on the motto of ‘People helping People,’” Emily says. “At RRCU, I can truly say, all employees and leadership strive to do just that.” Though she loves her career, Emily counts her greatest accomplishment as being a wife and mother. “I take great pride in being both. I love being able to be their support, protection and loving arms when they need it,” Emily says. Emily is married to James Bright, and they have two children: Easton and Maleigh Bright. “I have a terrific family that I can always count on. My entire family is terrific, and I can truly say we put each other first,” Emily says. “My family also includes my parents, George and Sherry Stegall; my sisters, Lisa McDuffie and Jennifer Sells; brother-in-laws, Craig McDuffie, Daniel Swanson and Jeff Sells; ALL my nieces and nephews; and my in-laws, John and Vickie Weeks. Each and everyone of them is extremely special to me and go above and beyond to show their love.”
On a typical day, Emily begins by waking the kids, and making sure they have everything they will need for the day. Emily starts her day at the chosen area school by 7:30-7:45 a.m. she will teach all day, and then go back to her office around 3:45 to get her lesson together for the next day. Then she gets off around 5 p.m. and runs errands before heading to BC Dance where both of her children dance. They normally do not get home until 8:30 or 9:30 p.m., and they get everything ready for the next day, and finally, go to bed. “Somewhere in between we eat, we pray, we laugh and we live life to the fullest!” Emily says. “There is very little free time, but when we do have it, I love going to watch one of my children or a niece or nephew involved in an activity. If there is free time, I enjoy bow hunting, playing card/board games, hanging out with family and friends and just relaxing!” Emily’s New Year’s resolution is to slow down more, and she has already started that by choosing to resign several board positions; however, in the past she has been involved in Race for the Cure, Community Kickin' Cancer, United Way, Junior Achievement, and has volunteered for Randy Sams Shelter. Currently, she is focused on the schools in our area; therefore, she serves as the treasurer for Red Lick Education Foundation, serves on the CLT for Liberty Eylau Middle School and serves on the CQIC for Texas High School. “My life motto is that it is always better to give than receive,” Emily says. “My goal for 2020 is to get more involved at our church, Westside Church of Christ, where I also teach bible class.” One of Emily’s favorite activities to just talking to her mom, and she counts her parents as the people she most looks up to. “I can’t choose just one person that inspires me; although, as a married couple you become one, so George and Sherry Stegall, technically would be one! My parents are superb examples of love and what love can do,” Emily says. “Through their love they have taught me exactly how to get where I am today.” Emily’s biggest struggle is learning that she cannot please everyone, nor can she save them all. “These are hard lessons to learn and understand, and I still struggle with both of them,” Emily says. “However, the best advice I’ve ever received is ‘Complaining about it will not resolve it.’” When thinking about the future, Emily wants to spend her time encouraging as many people as possible to come together to try to impact the youth in this community. “They need good leaders and mentors, not just teachers, and there is so much that volunteers can do within our schools that is not realized,” Emily says. “I would really like to make an impact to increase the amount of adults willing to volunteer and give their time. We have wonderful teachers and administration in our area, they need our support.”
Q&A with Emily 1. What three words would you choose to describe yourself? Kind, determined, driven. 2. What is your favorite food? Really I like everything, but if I had to pick a favorite I would say sushi. 3. What is your favorite TV show? Hands down, Friends. 4. What advice could you give others at becoming successful in whatever they strive to do? Be honest, have good work ethic. Be understanding and listen. Do something that you are passionate about, choose something you love and determine the path to get there. Always plan and be forward-thinking about what the next step is.

Elementary Principal at Redwater ISD
Kasey R. Coggin 016 ALT Magazine | January 2020
Kasey chose to go into the education field because she had many influential educators in her own life. “When I struggled understanding concepts, they took time to teach me in different ways and always provided positive encouragement until I was successful,” Kasey says. “These relationships and positive experiences inspired me to become an educator so that I could provide that same support to children.” Throughout Kasey’s career as an educator, there have been many unforgettable times. Personal accomplishments are always rewarding, but her most memorable moments revolve around students. “The look in a child’s eyes when they finally grasp a concept they did not before - there is nothing more powerful!” Kasey says. “It is in moments like this you watch a child transform from doubt and frustration to being excited about learning!” A typical day for Kasey begins around 4:30 a.m. with a run at 5:00 am with friends and a drive through Starbucks for caffeine. Upon arriving at school, she greets students in the car line at 7:30. Each day is fast-paced and often full of surprises, so Kasey checks Google Calendar multiple times a day to stay organized. “I spend time visiting classrooms, meeting with teachers and parents, and covering duties or classrooms as needed. I am also able to spend time rewarding students who meet individual reading goals and students who make positive choices. These moments are the best part of the day!” Kasey says. When she arrives home after a long day, Kasey spends time with Cody, her husband, and Caylor, her sixteen month old son. They enjoy playing with their Australian Shepherd, Rumor, or going for a walk when the weather allows. Once Caylor is asleep, Kasey spends time catching up on work, chores, etc. She also enjoys listening to inspirational audiobooks at the end of the day to help her unwind and mentally prepare for the next day’s adventures. Kasey’s biggest struggle centers around trying to juggle family, work, and life in general. Though she is supported by friends, colleagues, and family, the quote that always comes to her mind when she feels overwhelmed is from Desmond Tutu.“‘There is only one way to eat an elephant: a bite at a time.’ This has been so true in every aspect of my life, whether I was writing a dissertation, attempting to put a newborn on a sleep schedule, or training for a marathon,” Kasey says. “Reminding myself of this allows me to slow down and focus on the present moment.” Kasey thrives on challenging herself, but this has pros and cons. “Halfway through dissertation coursework, I decided it was time for my husband and I to have a baby. We knew it would be challenging, but I had no doubt we could manage it. I delivered my son the very first week of the 2018 school year as a new administrator, so I missed the first six weeks of school,” Kasey says. “During those six weeks at home, I was balancing learning to care for a newborn around the clock while also writing a dissertation. My professor suggested I take a semester off, but I continued reminding myself ‘this too shall pass.’ I knew I would look back one day and question how I survived that period of time, and I often do wonder. It was a trying time, but with the help of my supportive husband, our parents, and friends, I made it! It is just a reminder we can always defy the impossible if we believe!” For Kasey, the best part of her job is preparing children for their future. “We must not only prepare students academically but also must focus on the whole child so they can become successful, productive citizens,” Kasey
“Education is an all-consuming career and can be very stressful at times. However, the rewards of the position far outweigh the cons. There is nothing more rewarding that watching a student understand something for the first time or serving as a listening ear to a student who is having a difficult time at home or school. Thank your child’s teacher daily!” Since completing her doctoral degree, Kasey has often asked “what’s next?” As a self-proclaimed lifelong learner, she wants to continue learning and growing in her practice. “Educational research will continue to reveal best practices for student learning, and at Redwater Elementary, we will continue to provide the most effective learning experience for our students,” Kasey says. “Along with student learning, I am also passionate about promoting self-care among educators. The stress teachers and administrators experience is often difficult to understand unless you have experienced it. It is important for educators to make time to relax and rejuvenate to prevent burnout from the profession.” Kasey’s hero is her great-grandmother, Frances Hilton. “Grandma Hilton,” who lived and worked on a farm her entire life of 97 years, was not afraid of hard work. Kasey says that she was a small lady in stature, but she was tough. “She appreciated the simple things in life, and she found pleasure in growing vegetables in her garden, gathering eggs from hens, and even making butter from her cows’ milk,” Kasey says. “Grandma loved her family. She selflessly cared day and night for my grandpa during his battle with Alzheimer’s. Most importantly, Grandma Hilton was a fearless Christian who loved God. I am thankful I had the opportunity to listen to the many stories of trials and tribulations she faced. I am still inspired today by her work ethic and faith.” On top of her work and family time, Kasey also wants to give back to the community. She has the privilege of serving as the coordinator of Kids Run the Line Too. This event, in conjunction with Run the Line Half Marathon, sponsors Partnership for the Pathway. Partnership for the Pathway is a non-profit organization committed to building safe, connecting trails throughout our community. The hardworking Kids Run the Line Too committee organizes a fun 1 mile event for kids ages 5-12. It takes place on February 15th at Christus St. Michael Imaging Center. “I am also a proud member of Women for A&M - Texarkana. This non-profit organization is committed to raising funds for scholarships and program development, while also educating the surrounding area about Texas A&M University Texarkana,” Kasey says. “I enjoy supporting local charities and organizations through participating in local 5k races as well. It makes life feel more purposeful when helping others in need!” In 2020, Kasey hopes to influence others to practice cultivating positive thoughts and make time for self-care whether that is through prayer, meditation, exercise, yoga, journaling, etc. “Any time spent reflecting on experiences and practicing gratitude is so important,” Kasey says. “The following quote is from Norman Vincent Peale. ‘The way to happiness: Keep your heart free from hate, your mind from worry. Live simply, expect little, give much. Scatter sunshine, forget self, think of others.’ It sums up my New Year’s Resolution. I want to continue practicing gratitude, tolerance, and living in the present moment.” No matter what comes in the future, Kasey wants to inspire others to drop excuses, take care of themselves, and achieve goals they once thought were impossible. “I see so much potential in those around me; I think sometimes before they even see it in themselves,” Kasey says. “Each time an individual tells me I have inspired them, whether it was to go back to school or to focus on their physical health, I consider these moments my greatest accomplishments.”
Q&A with Kasey 1. What is your favorite food? “Veggie pizza, Caesar salads, and any kind of carbs!” 2. What is your favorite TV show? “I only pause long enough to watch TV when the Patriots are playing football!” 3. What is your life motto? “‘It makes no difference how many peaks you reach if there was no pleasure in the climb.’- Oprah Winfrey” 4. What advice would you give others at becoming successful in whatever they strive to do? “My friends will laugh that I am quoting Drake, but the quote ‘never let success go to your head, and never let failure go to your heart’ is one to always remember. To be successful, have confidence in your abilities but do not be afraid to fail. Failure is only a sign that you are trying, and failure will teach you more about yourself than you can imagine.”

August Mechelle "Shelly" Cole 020 ALT Magazine | January 2020
Shelly says her greatest accomplishment was graduating from college with honors. After achieving that goal, her plan did not include working as an appraiser. “I would definitely say this job chose me. It was not the original plan, but it was for the best,” Shelly says. “The most important thing about this business is that we provide funding to schools and also the cities. We are here to help people. We want to help people, and we care about what people have to say.” Shelly usually starts her day by getting up with her “fur babies” in the morning while talking to my mom. She gets dressed, grabs some breakfast, and then heads to work. At work, she checks her emails and calls. Then she collects her paperwork and goes out to reappraise some properties. “My most memorable moment so far happened while I was out appraising a trailer house, and we were blocked in by a dead cow!” Shelly says. As for her family, Shelly says that it is “unique.” Her father is a retired Vietnam Vet, who served in the Marines. He worked at Red River for over 35 years, as a machinist, and to this day, he can make almost anything from nothing. Shelly’s mother is a retired teacher. She has taught in almost every grade and in almost every school in Northeast Texas. She recently retired from being a special education homebound teacher. “She is the reason I believe my family is so close. My parents couldn’t have children so, they decided to adopt. All of my siblings including me are adopted,” Shelly says. “My older sister is now 55, and she has a loving family of two girls and grandsons. They always seem to keep her on her toes.
My second sister has two girls and two grandsons and one on the way. She so excited." Shelly’s brothers are twins, and eighteen years older than her. She says that they are alike in a lot of ways but completely different in others. Chris works at SBC Global in Longview. He has a daughter and a son. Will works at Red River and has a son that’s five years younger than Shelly, and a daughter who plays softball at NTCC. “I would definitely say that Will and I are the closest. He has never given up on me, even in the darkest times of my life,” Shelly says. The two people Shelly looks up to the most are Mike Brower who she works for, and her mom. “I admire Mr. Mike because he is able to handle controversy and chaos like a pro,” Shelly says. “My mom is the glue that holds our family together.” Shelly says her greatest struggle is with believing in herself, but she tries to live by the advice that “sometimes life will put you through the hardest part, but the best is yet to come.” When she isn’t at work, Shelly likes to spend time with her dogs, Wee and Muffin. She also loves watching her favorite show, Wynonna Earp, helping with the Angel Tree and Omaha Cares, and getting pedicures with her brother. In the future, Shelly is looking forward to building a family and being happy. “For 2020 I hope to learn to be more patient with myself,” Shelly says. “The best advice I have for others is that anything that comes easy won’t last, and the things that are meant to last will take time and effort and dedication. Don’t give up!”

Land Surveying Business
Velvet Hall Cool 022 ALT Magazine | January 2020
Velvet Hall Cool says that she is “nothing special,” but she makes what matters to herspecial. “Do that for yourself and don’t let anyone tell you that your hopes and dreams don’t matter,” Velvet says. Velvet followed her family into the land surveying business, but some of her biggest joys come from her family, friends, and special charities she is involved in. She is separated with three children: Ariel, Hastings, and Alyssa. Her “tiny little pride and joys” are her nine grandchildren: Annalyse, Travis, Layne, Asher, Christian, Alex, Jaxson, Olivia and Lucas. She says the birth of her children and grandchildren are some of the most memorable moments of her life. Monday through Thursday, Velvet works at the land surveying business, but Friday through Sunday, she is spending her free time at the Texarkana Museums System. “I would love to be a part of a complete restoration of the four museum properties over the next 10 years, starting with the Ace of Clubs House,” Velvet says. In the evenings, Velvet spends time with her “Trivia Family” or her “Friend Family.” She says that her friend group is one of her greatest accomplishments. “A lot of people don’t realize this, but I’m actually a shy person. Growing up bi-racial in the 1970’s, I never really knew where I fit in, who would treat me nice, who would belittle me with words,” Velvet says. “I had an extremely small, core group of friends and didn’t venture outside of that circle much. But I learned how to be strong and tough and loving from my mother and grew into my own. I enjoy people from all walks of life and all life experiences and I see the good in almost everyone. I tend to stay inside my head a lot, so I like to spend my free time around people to keep my mind from rambling!”
Velvet says that her biggest struggle in life has always been love. “I’m a ride or die friend and when I love you as a friend or as a significant other, that’s a bond that ties me to someone through a lot. I have to take the blinders off sometimes,” Velvet says. While Velvet’s biggest philanthropic support is for the Texarkana Museums System. She also tries to support those charities that are important to her close friends such as The Texarkana Symphony, Perot, TRAHC, Main Street Texarkana and Randy Sams Shelter. “These are all charities worth supporting,” Velvet says. Outside of the birth of her kids and grandkids, Velvet’s most memorable moments involve politics and music. “Bill Clinton is my idol! I’ve loved Bill Clinton since my junior year in high school,” Velvet says. “Meeting President Clinton, having my photograph taken and having him sign my Clinton rubber duck was wonderful. Front row center stage tickets to a Duran Duran concert was the second best moment of my life.” In the future, Velvet wants to keep following her mother’s advice, which is “do what you love.” Her New Year’s Resolution is to quit smoking, and have the best divorce party of her life in 2020! “My words of wisdom to others are to listen to your own inner voice and heart. Never let anyone shush you, silence you, or alter what you mean to say,” Velvet says. “You can’t make a difference if no one hears your opinion. If you’re wrong, an apology can go a long way.”

Retired Firefighter and Public Service
Joshua Edward Davis 024 ALT Magazine | January 2020
Josh Davis wears many proverbial “hats.” He is a recently retired firefighter after 20 years of service with the City of Texarkana, Arkansas. He has also served over nine years on the Texarkana, Texas City Council as the Ward 6 Councilmember and also as the Mayor Pro Tempore. In addition, Josh serves on the board of the Bowie Central Appraisal District as the Chairman and is involved in a multifamily construction and development project of 75 duplexes and triplexes on Old Boston Rd in Texarkana, Texas. He recently announced his intentions of running for the office of Bowie County Tax Assessor Collector. “I chose each one of these positions because I wanted to serve. I chose to be a firefighter to keep people safe. I chose city council to help others in my community,” Josh says. “Helping others is something I enjoy, and I found out I’m pretty good at it.” One of Josh’s most memorable moments from his career is the time he won his first election, and through his years of service he has faced his biggest struggle which is coming to the realization that “no matter how hard you may try, you will never please everyone.” Through it all, Josh loves to live by the famous words of Ronald Reagan: “There is no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don’t care who gets the credit.” Josh has been married to Mandy Davis, a Kindergarten teacher at PGISD, for twenty years. They have a daughter, Lora Davis, a sophomore student at LeTourneau University where she is a professional flight/pilot major.
They also have two dogs, Ruby and Edgar. “My greatest accomplishment is my family,” Josh says. “Without their love and support I could never achieve my other goals.” Because Josh is still adjusting to retirement from the fire department, he never knows what a typical day will hold. He visits the job site, answers phone calls from the city, meetings, or makes a spur-of-the-moment trip to Longview to see his daughter, Lora. On top of his service positions, Josh is also active in several community organizations. “I was just recently certified as a Young Eagles Pilot. This allows me to provide flights to kids that have never flown before,” Josh says. “I also help with Bark in the Park and Girl Scouts.” When he is not at work, Josh enjoys flying, spending time with family and friends, and grilling. This year, his goal is to advance his piloting skills, specifically aerobatics, and to “hit the gym more.” In the future, Josh wants to continue his goal of supporting the Texarkana community. “I hope to continue serving publicly in some capacity. I don’t know what the future holds, but I’m ready for the next step or challenge,” Josh says. “My best advice is don’t let others define you. Set your own goals and accomplish them.”
Q&A with Josh 1. What is the best advice you have ever received? Work the problem-don’t let the problem work you. 2. What is your favorite food? A nice, delicious, ribeye steak cooked medium rare. 3. What is your favorite TV show? Currently: For All Mankind on AppleTV. 4. What is your favorite past time? Reading about history and anything mechanical. 5. Who is your personal idol? I’ve always been intrigued by Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison.

Human Resources at Farmers Bank & Trust
Karrah Autumn Magness 026 ALT Magazine | January 2020
Karrah says that she never aspired to be in human resources and that the job came to her by chance. She had just begun a new job at Farmers when she received a call about a position in HR. “I was hesitant with so many changes over the few months prior, but I jumped in with both feet and I have now found my calling,” Karrah says. “I am grateful that someone saw in me what I couldn’t see in myself. They set me on my path and for that I will always be thankful.” Karrah is a Leadership Texarkana graduate and a member of Tri-State SHRM. However, she considers taking this chance on the HR position as one of her greatest accomplishments so far. “Accepting a position over a department and learning everyday processes was challenging, but worth it. There were pieces that I didn’t know how to do, but I learned how to do them, knowing I did my best,” Karrah says. “Although I definitely don’t think this will be the greatest accomplishment I ever achieve, or at least I hope not, it has made an impact on me professionally.” Every day, Karrah starts the morning with coffee, then she gets her children ready and drops them off at school. She has been married to her husband for five years, and they have three kids all under five-years-old: Becket (4), Everett (2), and Charlotte (almost 1). “To say my house is never quiet is an understatement,” Karrah says. “It’s a crazy, fun life that I wouldn’t trade!” Once she is at work, Karrah may have a day with a set schedule, and she may have a day that her schedule is set aside to meet the needs of the employees. “HR is not for the faint of heart to say the least and multi-tasking is essential. When the workday is over, we do the normal dinner, baths, bedtime,” Karrah says. “Then I spend time with my husband to just chill out and wind down.” Though free time is hard to come by, Karrah really loves spending time at home with her family. They will make pallets on the floor and have movie marathons, watch Netflix, or color in coloring books. For Karrah, the best days are spent just being with them. If she does get to take off, she loves having spa days and getting a facial, massage, manicure, or pedicure. “I also enjoy date night with my husband. It doesn’t happen all the time and usually one kid tags along but spending time with him even if it’s dinner and a movie at home is still special,” Karrah says. Karrah really looks up to her grandmother, Cindy Gilbert. “She has always
been my cheerleader but also my honest opinion when I may not have wanted it. She loves hard but prays harder,” Karrah says. “She is who I aspire to be.” Karrah believes that the best thing about her business is their core values which are exemplified in the acronym: HEART. It stands for honor, excellence, adaptability, respect and teamwork. “We believe in investing in our employees and our communities, and spilling HEART into every aspect of our lives whether professional or personal,” Karrah says. She also says that Farmers Bank and Trust is truly family oriented. They bind together when fellow employees are struggling or seeing difficult times, and they celebrate each other’s accomplishments. “We spend more time with our work family than we do our real family and overtime they become family as well. Some of my good friends have come from this organization,” Karrah says. “For that I am grateful. Making a choice to work for Farmers Bank & Trust has been one of the best decisions I have made thus far in my life. With almost five years under my belt I am thankful for everything this organization has given and provided for me!” In the next ten years, Karrah’s goals center around growth. “I would love to build my career, as well as my relationships, professionally, personally and within the community,” Karrah says. “In 2020, I want to obtain my SHRMCP certification and make a positive impact on my organization.” With a career and a growing family, Karrah says that her greatest struggle is being too critical of herself. She hates letting anyone down or dropping the ball on something. “I hold myself to a very high standard when it comes to work and home life. Every decision I make impacts someone on some sort of level, so becoming okay with not having it all together is hard for me but something I am working on!” Karrah says. “However, the greatest advice I’ve ever received is to always keep my morals and God at the forefront. It has never steered me wrong.”
Q&A with Karrah 1. List three words you would choose to describe yourself. Ambitious, independent, loyal. 2. What is your life motto? Everything comes to you at the right time. Be patient. 3. What is your favorite food? Sushi. 4. What is your favorite TV show? Right now, it is probably This Is Us but if we are going to say all time, it would have to be Friends (so cliché) and Law & Order: SVU. 5. What advice would you give others at becoming successful in whatever they strive to do? Don’t wait for someone else to teach you what you want to know. Your future is in your hands. You are capable of accomplishing anything you set your mind to and never let anyone tell you otherwise!

Marketing and Communications at CHRISTUS St. Michael
Stacye Lynn Magness 030 ALT Magazine | January 2020
Stacye’s career in marketing and communications at CHRISTUS St. Michael actually stemmed from a high school project. She was asked to coordinate a school shooting drill for her gifted and talented program where she was able to communicate what was happening to the student body as well as the local media. After that, she started looking for jobs in communications which could lead to jobs in public relations, journalism, graphic design, etc. While in college, she took a few business classes with an emphasis in marketing and enjoyed them as well. “One of my adjunct professors was the Marketing/ Communications Coordinator for CHRISTUS St. Michael at the time. I remember thinking ‘I would love to have her job someday,’” Stacye says. “After graduating from college, I started my first career job as Marketing Coordinator for Crocker’s Jewelers and while there, started my MBA. In 2013, a position opened up at CHRISTUS St. Michael in their marketing and communications department and I have been with CHRISTUS ever since! I am fortunate I get to be a part of our community’s health and healing without passing out at the sight of blood or needles!” When the alarm goes off at 4 a.m. in the morning, Stacye goes for a run and then gets ready before her boys get up. Stacye and her husband, Chad, have two sons, Dalton (5) and Fletcher (1). “My greatest accomplishments are my two extraordinary, wild, and beautiful sons! I have never faced a more rewarding challenge than being a mom,” Stacye says. “They are both blessings I certainly don’t deserve but thank God for every day!” Once the boys are awake, Stacye and Chad make sure the boys are fed, dressed, and dropped off at school and daycare. Then, Stayce goes to work where her day is planned out with tasks and meetings; however, her plans for the day frequently change depending on the current need. “Francine Francis and I coordinate the marketing, communication and public relation efforts for all of CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System. We are responsible for helping support and grow volumes for over 15 facilities along with their various service lines. My workdays are always different but rarely dull,” Stacye says. After work, Chad or Stacye gets the boys home, and Stacye attempts to cook dinner while she helps Dalton with his homework and attempts to keep Fletcher entertained with puffs or goldfish, which ultimately end up on my floor. “Once kids are fed and bathed, we have about 30 minutes to an hour before, we say a prayer, read a book and put the boys to bed. I try to get in bed shortly after the kids do, because, let’s face it… I need all the energy I can get to keep up with them!” Stacye says. One of the most memorable moments of Stacye’s career occurred when she was eight months pregnant with Dalton. The Marketing and Communications Coordinator position opened up at CHRISTUS St. Michael for the second time in the two years she had worked there. Despite preparing to go out on maternity leave with her first child, she couldn’t overcome this overwhelming feeling that she needed to apply for the position. “So, I waddled into Francine’s office with my resume and told her I was applying for the job. Shortly after returning from maternity leave, I was offered the position,” Stacye says. “I had little faith in how I would handle being a new mom, I had little faith in how I would handle such a crucial promotion to my career, and I most certainly had little faith in my ability to handle both. I am fortunate Francine and others in the organization did have faith
in my potential. I now know the timing was perfect and was one of many moments that taught me to have faith and trust God. My dad would often say, ‘Always trust Jesus,’ and ‘Pray, pray, pray!’ which is some of the best advice I ever received.” While Stacye admires and respects many people in her life, she counts her father as one of the most influential. “I have always considered my dad my personal hero,” Stacye says. “Despite all he went through fighting cancer off and on for six years, he continued to keep a strong faith and stay positive.” Watching her father suffer through cancer has been the hardest thing that Stacye has experienced thus far. Stacye saw her parents give up their home and their pets and sacrifice time with family and friends to try and prolong her father’s life. “Every appointment, we would hold our breath for the awaited outcome of the previous month’s grueling treatment. My mom, my sisters, and I all put his care as our priority, each doing all we could to get him to treatments and appointments,” Stacye says. “Off and on for six years, cancer controlled and defined us. The majority of us have had to deal with or will deal with this struggle rather it is cancer or another illness. The truth is, the struggle is so hard, and it never really gets easier, just different. To end on a more positive note though, all of my struggles have made me who I am now which is a much better person than I was 10 years ago - when I thought a bad hair day was the ultimate struggle. I hate cancer and the disruption and heartache it causes, but I am also grateful for the empathy and resilience I gained from it.” On top of her job and her family, Stacye stays active in the community. She volunteers with Angel Fund Foundation, Inc., Women of A&M – Texarkana, and Kids Run the Line. She supports local, charity races by running, and she also participates in philanthropic events CHRISTUS St. Michael either coordinates or supports including Foundation Duck Race, Cancer Survivor Day, Komen Texarkana, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society and the Texas Mission of Mercy Dental Clinic, among others. When Stacye has free time, she is usually running, attending a community function, or spending time with her family. Chad and Stacye have a lot of immediate family in Texarkana, and a great group of friends that they consider a second family. “We love getting together and enjoy having our kids grow up together. Dalton often asks if his cousins or his friends are his brothers or sisters. I know we couldn’t stay sane through work and raising kids without all of them,” Stacye says. “We also really enjoy Beech Street First Baptist Church. I grew up with a church family and I love being able to raise my boys in a similar setting. Another favorite thing I love to do is spend a whole day at home in yoga pants with no makeup, build a fort in the living room with the boys, pop popcorn and either watch a superhero movie or one of their favorite shows. I love cuddling with the kiddos while they still let me!” In the next ten years, Stacye’s goals center around her family and friends. “I hope to have planted a good foundation for Dalton and Fletcher to make good decisions, love God, love people, and love life,” Stacye says. “I’d love to make lasting memories with my family whether we are traveling to new and fun places or enjoying a simple dinner with friends.” Stacye also wants to continue to learn, grow, and never become stagnant in her career. Stacye knows that while CHRISTUS will never be perfect, they truly invest in people and our community in so many ways. She loves that the health system’s culture strives to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. “Health care is so crucial to a person’s quality of life. It is so important to be shown dignity when you or a loved one need care. From seeing both my babies’ first breaths to seeing some of my loved ones’ last breaths, I have experienced first-hand how vital the role of our caregivers are during some of the most monumental moments in people’s lives,” Stacye says. “While I am not equipped to serve on the front-line of healthcare, I am honored to be able to support and advocate for those who do. Because of the influence health care has had on me over the years, my job in marketing has become more to me than NURSERY, INC. placing ads or putting up billboards. My role is to help what could be FULL SERVICE NURSERY a life-changing service or product get into the hands of the people it WHOLESALE & RETAIL was intended for. It isn’t just about my business being successful; it is about helping people benefit from the services our ministry offers.”

Chief Deputy of the Bowie County Sheriff’s Office
Jeffery Kenneth Neal 032 ALT Magazine | January 2020
Jeff Neal has always been drawn to the law enforcement profession. He believes this is due to an “intrinsic need to help others.” On a “normal” day, Jeff starts his day at the office checking on services, patrol, criminal investigation and inmate trust fund divisions to ensure things are operating smoothly within each of them, a process that may take a few hours or all day. Next, he reads the daily paperwork and discusses current needs with the commander of that division. In between, there are phone calls and emails that need to be answered. “These are normally from citizens who need help with understanding how something within the criminal justice system works or help reaching the proper person or division who can assist them with what they need,” Jeff says. “Other phone calls are from parents and citizens who need advice or assistance handling a problem they are experiencing. Some of the problems people contact me about are not law enforcement related at all. However, the person who is calling is reaching out for help nonetheless, and I do my best to help these individuals as well as everyone who calls us.” Jeff also works directly with the records division to help fill public requests as well as requests from the news media. At some point during the day, he meets or speaks with both the sheriff and the warden of our jail. “We will discuss the progress of current projects that we are working on and address any issues that need their attention,” Jeff says. “When I can, I enjoy spending my lunch break at the gym.” No matter what the day brings, Jeff acknowledges that his job and the job of other peace officers is to provide service to people of Texarkana on both good and bad days in their lives. “Helping people when they are experiencing a crisis is the most important part of my job. People do not normally call law enforcement when things are going well for them. Instead, the opposite is true,” Jeff says. “We normally meet people when they are having a bad day, and sometimes the worst day, of their lives. This could be any number of things, but it is usually something that has negatively affected them causing them to call us. It is so important for peace officers to be a calming factor to help people process the crisis and return to a level of normal. This does not mean things will be like they were before, but we do want to help the best we can.” One of the most memorable moments of Jeff’s career is from many years ago when he first started his civilian law enforcement service with the Texarkana Texas Police Department in 1993. They were carrying Smith and Wesson 686 revolvers as their firearm. “This is a very heavy handgun and to boot, being the new guy, I did not receive the newest gear. My holster was so worn out that it had a large outward tilt away from my body,” Jeff says. “One day while working, I was speaking with another officer who recognized a person with several felony arrest warrants. When the person saw us, he fled on foot. He ran into a creek and kept running up the creek in the water as I chased after him. I was able to gain ground on him in the water. He then decided it was time to move back to dry ground. I caught him about threefourths of the way up the bank of the creek and tackled him.” The suspect quickly got back up, and Jeff pursued and tackled him a second time. This time, Jeff was able to handcuff him. “When I stood up, the owner of the yard we ended up in said, ‘He had a gun.’ I was shocked when I realized that it was my handgun that had slid out of my holster and was lying on the ground next to the person I had just arrested. Things only got worse when I realized I was missing my radio and wedding ring too,” Jeff says. “My radio was found quickly, but it took a week, several friends and a metal detector to find my wedding ring. I still reflect on this arrest from time to time, knowing the only reason I went home that afternoon is that God wanted me to. I thank God for watching out for me over my career and I know I could not do my job if I did not feel called to do so.” Some of the best advice Jeff has ever received originated from a crisis negotiation school that retired Bowie County Chief Deputy Larry Parker sent him to while they were both working for Texarkana Texas Police Department. “It was there I learned about active listening. Chief Parker helped me develop this skill when I returned from the training,” Jeff says. “Learning to listen to people and really hear what they are saying is the best
advice I have received during my career.” When he isn’t working, Jeff enjoys working out and spending time with his family. Jeff married his wife, Tiffani, 26 years ago. Tiffani is the middle and high school gifted and talented teacher for Liberty-Eylau Independent School District. They have two children: Tori (22), a second year Doctorate of Physical Therapy student at the University of Central Arkansas, and Caleb (17), a junior at Liberty-Eylau High School and an Eagle Scout. When he first started this job, Jeff struggled to find time to balance his work and his family. When Tori was born, the balance became more complicated. “Years later I read a book titled, Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement: A Guide for Officers and Their Families by Dr. Kevin Gilmartin. His tips for surviving a law enforcement career are time management, financial management and exercise,” Jeff says. “I agree with his conclusions but believe that he left out the most important aspect. I would add faith in my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to make his list complete. I do wish I had found this book earlier in my career.” One of Jeff’s biggest mentors in life was his grandfather, Rudolph Bergt. While growing up, Jeff’s father worked hard to provide for the family, and he was away from home a lot, so Jeff spent a large portion of his childhood with his mom and grandparents. During that time, Jeff watched and learned from his grandfather by seeing how he treated others. “He was always a man of his word and stood behind his workmanship 100 percent. I also saw how he valued his marriage to my grandmother and continually strived to best take care of his family,” Jeff says. “Family and church were the pillars of our family and still are. I also admired him for enlisting to serve in the Army during World War II. He proudly served as part of the 82 Air Borne, but seldom spoke of his service. He was the reason that I chose the Army when I enlisted to serve in the military. I value his advice to this day and miss him greatly.” Jeff’s greatest accomplishment is graduating with his bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University-Texarkana. He finished his degree when he was 43 years old. “It was very important for me to finish this goal, not just for myself, but also for my children,” Jeff says. “I wanted them to see the importance of bettering yourself, and also how much more difficult it becomes the older you get. It was a real challenge balancing family, work and school, but it was definitely worth it.” Though he stays busy with both work and his family, Jeff is also involved in several community organizations. He is a member and currently serves as a deacon at First Baptist Church Texarkana. He also spent several years serving as an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 13 at Hardy Memorial in Texarkana. Jeff’s son Caleb earned his Eagle rank from Troop 13, as well. He is also currently a member of the following organizations: The ArkLaTex 100 Club, Texas A&M University–Texarkana Alumni Association, Sheriff’s Association of Texas, and the National Rifle Association. In 2020, Jeff’s goal is to be elected Sheriff by the citizens of Bowie County, Texas. In the future, he is also looking forward to seeing his daughter graduate with her doctoral degree in physical therapy and his son graduating from high school and college. He is looking forward to celebrating many more years of marriage with his wife, and last, but certainly not least, he hopes to successfully lead the Bowie County Sheriff’s Office into the future. “I feel very honored to serve in such a great community as ours that has always valued our law enforcement. We all know that has not been the case nationwide over recent years,” Jeff says. “If I could share one thing with everyone about peace officers it would be that we are all just humans too. We all have families and experience the same highs and lows as any other person. So, if you see a peace officer while you are out and about, just say ‘hi’ and you will see we are just regular people.”

034 ALT Magazine | January 2020
Kris Nichols started in his business when he was only 18-years-old. “I find the remodeling and building process interesting,” Kris says. “Being a part of people achieving their dreams makes my job the most rewarding.” Every day, Kris starts off with coffee from Brewster’s Coffee next door to his shop, and then he works with customers all day. “The most memorable moments in my career are when I am with a customer and they get to see a remodel or new construction completed for the first time and their shocked and excited reactions,” Kris says. “To see the smiles on customers’ faces and to get the big hugs that follows after makes every day a great day to be in my profession.” After work, Kris heads home to his family. He is happily married to his wife of nine years, Lori, and together they have four kids ranging in age from 15-19 years old. The family loves to spend time working on their farm. On the weekends, Kris enjoys cooking, playing dominos, watching football on Sundays, and traveling. He is also active in For the Sake of One and Family Matters. Kris’ personal idol is his mother, Debby Nichols. “She is the strongest woman I know. She has raised three boys while my dad travelled to provide for our family,” Kris says. “She is the glue that holds us together, and the heart that reminds us daily that love is unconditional.” Though Kris struggles with knowing that he cannot help everyone all the time, he strives to make sure that his business builds close customer relationships and makes customer’s dreams come true. “I love designing, helping people, and being a part of a locally-owned family business. People need to remember that new products are coming out daily, and to shop where you feel comfortable,” Kris says. “My goal is to be able to watch and be part of Carter Adam’s Flooring’s future growth and success.” In 2020, Kris wants to become vegan and live a healthier lifestyle. In the future, he looks forward to seeing both he and his family growing in their personal and professional lives. “My greatest accomplishment has not been achieved yet,” Kris says. “I strive to be better today than I was yesterday; I want to always reach for the stars.”

Instructor in the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Texarkana College and PRN at CHRISTUS St. Michaels as a mother/baby and pediatric nurse
Katelyn Elizabeth Park 036 ALT Magazine | January 2020
Katelyn Park has always had a passion for nursing and wanting to help others. “I have also enjoyed teaching and being able to teach students at the hospital, so I chose to get my MSN in Nursing Education to combine both passions,” Katelyn says. “I count my greatest accomplishment as graduating with my Master of Science in Nursing Education from the University of Texas at Arlington in May 2019.” Throughout the fall semester Katelyn spends three days a week working on grading clinical paperwork, prepping for on campus skills labs, simulations, and lecture material. Two days a week, Katelyn spends with a clinical group at the hospital assisting them with learning how to put the theory concepts into actual patient care. “At the college I am helping students become future nurses. Nursing school is definitely very rigorous and exhausting but it’s worth it because these are the future nurses of our community,” Katelyn says. “In the hospital setting, I get to spend my time teaching new moms and dads how to care for their newborns. I love teaching and both jobs allow me to do exactly that.” Katelyn calls her family loving and supportive. My dad is funny, and my mom is sensible and always gives me the advice I know I need. My grandmother is the sweetest person I know. I also have an older brother and a sister-in-law and two adorable nephews,” Katelyn says. “The person I look up to the most is my papaw! He was my biggest cheerleader for me becoming a nurse.” Katelyn says her biggest struggle was when she was going to school full time for her MSN and working full time night shift at the hospital. “I tried to remember the advice I received to never give up and push through the tough days to achieve
my dreams,” Katelyn says. “The most memorable moment in my career so far was the first delivery I was a part of while working in Labor and Delivery at Wadley. There are many memorable moments and every birth was special, but the first one I can remember so vividly.” Though she is just now figuring out what “free time” is after spending so much time going to school and working, Katelyn does enjoy watching a little TV, shopping, napping, going to church, and hanging out with her friends. She also loves concerts, and she has seen Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw and more. Through the college, she has also donated to scholarships for TC Students, Race for the Cure, helped out at Harvest Texarkana, and assisted in the Mass Flu Clinic for the Miller County Health Department. In 2020, Katelyn wants to take the time to enjoy not being a student, but in the next ten years, she sees herself continuing her education and starting her Ph.D. “I love my profession, and I like to encourage those who are interested in becoming a nurse,” Katelyn says. “This is why I love teaching at Texarkana College; it is where I fell in love with nursing.

Seniors at Hooks High School Abby is graduating this year from Hooks High School, and she is looking forward to the future. She says her greatest accomplishment is receiving a college softball scholarship, and she is excited to see what college is all about. However, her plans do not stop there. “In the next ten years, I hope to have graduated from college, be working in a special education related field, and have done lots of traveling,” Abby says. “I hope to still have wonderful relationships with my friends, and I will be looking forward to my class reunion.” Every morning, Abby gets up early and heads to school. After a day of classes, she goes to practice for the sport that is currently in season. Abby plays volleyball, basketball, softball and track. After practice ends around 5 p.m., she heads home to study and spend time with family and friends, or she drives to Mt. Pleasant for softball training. Though she doesn’t have much free time, she loves to spend it with friends and family. Her favorite down time activity is going out to eat or having a bonfire with friends. “My most memorable moment of high school would be ALL the memories I’ve made and time spent with my friends,” Abby says. “When it comes to friends, I am beyond blessed and have made memories that will truly last a lifetime!”

We get crazy and loud, but fun to watch!” Abby tries to live by advice from her mom. “She always says, ‘Bragging only means you’re not used to having it,’” Abby says, “I love it and try my best to live by it.” In addition to advice from her mom, Abby is also inspired by her favorite movie quote from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop to look around every once in a while, you could miss it.” She also looks up to Princess Diana. “I love her servant’s heart,” Abby says. As her senior year ends, Abby is excited about the future. “My advice to others is to work hard at whatever you do. Self Employed Owner of Fizz Bizz LLC
Chalissa D'Nae Russell 042 ALT Magazine | January 2020
When Chalissa and her husband decided to start this company, they had a few goals in mind. One of them was a five year goal to be carried in at least 25 of the 50 states; they met that goal within the first year. They are now carried in 48 of the 50 states and even Canada. “We still can't believe it has grown to what it is today,” Chalissa says. “This local and family-owned business provides consistent high quality products and presentation with great customer service.” Chalissa says her husband is her biggest fan. Together they have two boys, Garren (five) and Stryder (four). Chalissa says her biggest struggle has been learning when to walk away and have a balance between her work life and home life. “It is usually a constant juggling act between being a mom, a business owner, and a wife. My mornings consist of getting the boys ready for school, followed by an endless to-do list for the business, to picking the boys back up, going back to work, and winding down just in time for when the husband gets off work,” Chalissa says. “During peak season after getting the kids to bed the husband and I often go back to prepping and shipping orders into the late night.” When Chalissa and her husband do have time off, they love to spend time as a
family and do “anything involving water.” They especially love cruises. She loves to volunteer at Redlick ISD, Garren's school, and working at Williams Memorial, Stryder's school. You will always see Chalissa smiling when she is helping anyone. In the next ten years, Chalissa hopes their company rivals international brands and competitors. Her personal idol is Kelly Pack. The way she runs and operates her business is what Chalissa strives to achieve. “My goal for 2020 is to be carried in all 50 states and move Fizz Bizz into a bigger facility,” Chalissa says. “My New Year’s resolution is to constantly try and better myself and my company. My advice to others is to not accept failure and always strive to be better.”
Q&A with Chalissa 1. What is the best advice you have ever received? Fake it until you make it. You never know if you are capable of accomplishing something until you try. 2. What has been your greatest accomplishment? Finding a way to do what I love and having the ability to involve my family with it. 3. What is your life motto? Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. – C.S. Lewis 4. What is your favorite food? Breakfast items. It is often the only meal I get to eat. 5. What is your favorite TV show? I do not have a favorite, but anything that can make me laugh is always my go to.

Stephanie Ryan 044 ALT Magazine | January 2020
Stephanie fully believes that the photography business chose her, and not the other way around. “Ever since I was a little girl I’ve had a creative eye for portraiture. Everything that I did for work before photography was ‘working,’” Stephanie says. “If you can find something you love and make a living doing it, DO IT!” For Stephanie, the most important part of her business is making connections with clients, and helping them capture their special moments. “Portraits literally stop time. Time doesn’t wait for anyone. You can’t get it back. You can’t buy it. You can’t borrow time. You can’t ask for more. All you really have is this moment in time,” Stephanie says. “It doesn’t care if you aren’t ready or if you need just a second more. I can stop time with a portrait. I can freeze a moment in time for forever. That’s powerful and important to me.” Stephanie has had a lot of memorable moments in her career and stories from clients that have touched her heart. “I am truly blessed to be able to work with and build such great relationships with awesome clients,” Stephanie says. “I have had several clients contact me after losing a loved one thanking me for capturing such special memories.” After coffee every morning and taking her boys to school, Stephanie is either in the yoga studio or newborn studio. “My ‘office hours’ are spent scheduling clients, editing/ delivering galleries or setting new goals for my business, and my evenings are generally spent shooting portraits session,” Stephanie says. “The best part of it all, is that no day is the same. Each day that I am creating, I am creating something different.” When she isn’t at work, Stephanie loves to spend her free time with her boys. Wade is 13 and Andrew is 9. “Between the both of them my life is full of adventures and lessons. I have a Red Merle Aussie named Penny and a Mackeral Tabby named Kitty--so original, but the boys named him,” Stephanie says. “The closest thing I have to a personal idol is my children. They constantly and consistently teach me something new and make me grow as a person. They are the reason I am what I am and always push me to be or do more than I think is even possible.
They’re the real MVP’s. There’s a quote by Andy Stanley that reads ‘Your greatest accomplishment may not be something you do but someone you raise.’” Stephanie is also involved with several community organizations such as Pink Behind the Thin Blue Line, Wounded Warriors, and several abused animal rehabilitation/foster services. But her schedule keeps her from being as involved as she would like. The best advice Stephanie ever received is that time is the most valuable thing we have. For that reason, she spends most of her time with her boys. She loves to surround herself with close friends and family. If Stephanie has a full weekend off she loves to go on adventures. “I love yoga, and I enjoy hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, and fishing,” Stephanie says. “I am not afraid to tent or hammock camp! Basically anything outdoors and I am there! “ In the future, Stephanie would love to purchase a beautiful piece of land and build her forever dream home. Her New Year’s resolution is to spend more time with her children, family and friends. “I would also love to travel more, to check another box on my bucket list, to drink more water and to just live life to the fullest!” Stephanie says. Her other goals for 2020 include continuing to grow and be successful in her business. “My advice for others is that there are no shortcuts!” Stephanie says. “Apply yourself daily, give yourself grace, and remove stagnant thoughts.”
Thank You Texarkana!
Q&A with Stephanie: 1. What has been your greatest struggle? People pleasing, overthinking, and chocolate! 2. List three words you would choose to describe yourself: Passionate, freespirited, and courageous. 3. What is your life motto? Doing your best is more important than being the best. 4. What is your favorite food? Chips and salsa. 5. What is your favorite TV show? My all time favorite has to be Gilmore Girls! It’s a total chick comedy about a single mother and her teenage daughter in a small town. The show keeps me laughing. I have watched the series more than once and could watch it another!

Douglas A. Sloan 046 ALT Magazine | January 2020
Doug Sloan has always wanted to own his own business. He was given the opportunity to buy his first Wingstop, located on Stateline Avenue, and he has never regretted it. He starts his day going to his stores to check on the business and his employees. “My employees are the best. When we first started, keeping good employees was the biggest struggle,” Doug says. “Currently, I have some employees who have been with me for a long time, and I couldn’t ask for better employees than the ones I have now.” Doug believes that the best thing about Wingstop is great wings and fries, great employees, and a comfortable atmosphere. Opening a third store has been one of Doug’s greatest accomplishments, but another memorable moment was when he received his first Golden Goose, an award given to stores who accomplish the goals of a onemillion-dollar store. “The best advice I’ve ever received is to work hard, stay focused, and you can accomplish anything you want to accomplish,” Doug says. When he isn’t at work, Doug loves spending time with his family and traveling when they can. He has been married to Lisa for thirty-one years, and they have two children. Drew works in IT, and Lauren teaches color guard. On the weekend, they love to relax at home and watch movies. “I couldn’t ask for a more loving family then one that I have,” Doug says. Doug is also active in the Knights of Columbus, and his favorite pastime is collecting trains and train buildings. In 2020, he hopes to finally start on his train layout, and his New Year’s Resolution is to be the best person he can be. In the next ten years, he hopes to open more stores and then retire. “My advice to others would be that you have to work hard, stay focused and remind yourself every day of your goals,” Doug says. “Strive to do your very best because there will be good days and bad. You just have to keep on pursuing your dreams.”

Registered Respiratory Therapist, L.V.N., and owner of Passion for Pooches
Dawn Renee Smith 050 ALT Magazine | January 2020
Dawn Smith is the kind of superhero that works in a paying job by day and volunteers the rest of her time rescuing animals, rehabilitating them, and finding them good homes. “I have always rescued animals since I was a kid, so, naturally, as an adult, I took it to the next level,” Dawn says. On a “normal” day, Dawn gets up at 3:30 a.m., takes care of all the dogs by medicating, cleaning up after them, and letting them outside to use the bathroom, and gets ready for her paying job. She clocks in at 5:15 a.m., works all day, and clocks out at 2 p.m. Then the real work begins. She picks up dogs to go to or from the vets, feeds them all, cleans up any messes they make, cooks dinner, completes house chores, and goes to bed about 10 p.m. However, for Dawn, all the hard work is worth it. “I have several memorable moments in my career. At my paying job, it was the time I set a young lady up with an external ventilator so she could stay off of life support because she has a neuromuscular disease,” Dawn says. “In rescue, my most memorable moment was saving Bridgette. She was a pit bull that was lying next to her dead mate. She was in horrible condition: starving, emaciated. She had given up on life. Now she is beautiful and serves as a service dog for a veteran with PTSD.” Though Dawn has to see and make sense of heartbreaking cruelty and neglect, she still encourages others to get involved with helping a rescue, fostering, or starting a rescue. “Go into it knowing you can’t save them all, but take pride in the ones you can save,” Dawn says. What helps Dawn through the tough days are her family and “great friends that are family.” She is married and has a 23-year-old son and a 21-year-old daughter. “My greatest accomplishment are my kids, my marriage, and my rescue,” Dawn says. Though Dawn rarely has any time off, her favorite weekend activity is spending time with friends, family and watching her kids play sports. Her goal for 2020 is to make more time to get in shape and make more time for her and
her husband since they are part-time empty nesters. In the next 10 years, Dawn’s hope is to retire and rescue full time. The most important thing about Dawn’s rescue is educating about spaying and neutering. “My greatest struggle is that rescue is a never-ending problem. No matter how many you save, it is never enough,” Dawn says. “I wish that people knew that our rescue is not perfect, but we do our very best.”

Kayla Artiemissa Tucker 052 ALT Magazine | January 2020
Kayla Tucker counts her recent appointment as the new interim director at the Animal Care and Adoption Center as one of her greatest accomplishments. “I want to make some much needed change for the animals and community,” Kayla says. “Ever since I was a little girl, I have always helped animals. So now I get to help more, and I want to be the voice they aren’t able to have.” Every morning, Kayla wakes up and hits the ground running. Her and husband Jake, have a farm with a rescue horse, a mini donkey, goats, chickens, ducks, reptiles, dogs, and cats. Kayla has to make sure everyone is fed and ready for a new day. Kayla and Jake have two boys, Talon (7) and Lyric (6). “We are an outdoorsy, animal-loving bunch. We enjoy the simple things in life, like playing in mud puddles and having ‘mud ball fights,’ Kayla says. “Our favorite weekend activity is spending time together and going back to our hometown of Broken Bow, Oklahoma, for the day and exploring the mountains.” One of the most memorable moments for Kayla was the first adoption she helped in her new position. “I love each of the animals here as my own,” Kayla says. “It’s always a bittersweet goodbye, but I know they will have a better life.” When Kayla is not at work saving animals, she is doing so at home. She fosters for a few different rescues including the Texarkana Animal League. She also runs her own private rescue for dogs, reptiles, farm animals, etc. When she does manage to have some free time, she says that you can find her “cuddled with a dog, or two, or ten, drinking peppermint tea, and reading a book.” Kayla has several big goals for the future. In the next 10 years, she would like to see spay and neuter laws in place for the Texarkana area to help with the already high unwanted pet

For her, the biggest struggle comes with knowing that she will never do things 100% perfect. “Honestly, I am my own worst critic. I always look back on things I do and tell myself it wasn’t good enough, so I strive the next time to do it better. Unfortunately, I never see it as perfect,” Kayla says. “I never even set New Year’s Resolutions; I hate setting myself up for failure. It is the worst thing I could do for my confidence. So, I always say my goal is to ‘save more lives.’ I know I will always be able to uphold that one.” One of Kayla’s biggest personal idols is Kristi Claire Silvey. She was the naturalist for Beaver’s Bend Park. As a child, Kayla loved visiting the nature center, soaking up all the knowledge Kristi would offer about our native wildlife. Sadly, she passed in 2004, but even still, she made a lasting impression on Kayla helping to mold her into the conscious and compassionate person she strives to be today. As Kayla works towards her goals in our community, her advice to others is to “be the change you want to see,” and never let the negativity of others keep you from reaching your potential. “If you have set your mind to it, make sure you heart is in sync. Go for it and don’t let anyone give you doubt or negativity,” Kayla says. “You will always have people in the shadows rooting for your downfall, the best thing to do is ignore it. Focus more on the positive in your life, use that as your fuel to keep moving forward.”

Executive Vice President & Chief Economic Development Officer at TexAmericas Center
Eric Voyles 054 ALT Magazine | January 2020
In his position, Eric is responsible for sales, marketing and strategic and tactical planning that will lead to jobs and capital investment at TexAmericas Center. “I took this position because I came from a very poor family and community, so the idea of helping bring jobs to communities that need economic opportunity is very powerful to me,” Eric says “A colleague once characterized economic development as doing God’s work, and I like that description.” TexAmericas Center is a State of Texas redevelopment authority, which makes them an interesting mixture of government and business. “Think of us as a Not-For-Profit Real Estate Management and Development Company,” Eric says. “TexAmericas Center owns 12,000 acres and our Board of Directors has directed the organization to create one job for each acre we own.” No day is ever the same at Eric’s work. One day, he may be at my desk all day. The next day, he may entertain a CEO and his entourage from a European company, and the next day, he may be in transit to another city to talk with a group of people about why creating jobs in Texarkana is a good business move. “One of my most memorable moments in this career was when I once traveled to China on business. We were there for 17 days calling on businesses, investment promotion agencies and educational institutions,” Eric says. “While in China, I took the afternoon off one day and did walk to a summit on the Great Wall.” When he’s not at work, Eric enjoys spending time with his wife, Kris, and their three grown boys and two dogs. Eric considers one of his biggest accomplishments as not running his wife off after thirty two years of being together. “My wife is loving, caring, and concerned, yet when she is not happy, you will definitely know. She’s artistic and seeks to do things that revolve around art. She loves to cook and is extremely innovative even in that aspect. Her kids are the center of her life,” Eric says. “On top of this she is the VP of Market Growth for Guaranteed Rate, a large mortgage company. Kris is the anchor of our home and is definitely the driving force that keeps our family together!” Their boys, Jack and Zach, are grown and away at college. They have both graduated with undergraduate degrees. Jake is completing a pharmacy degree at the University of Wisconsin
at Milwaukee. Zach is pursuing a physical therapy degree at Creighton in Omaha. Their youngest boy, Nick, is at Oklahoma State University, and he also plans to go into a medical field. “My boys continue to be my day-by-day inspiration,” Eric says. Eric says that their dogs are the “cornerstone of their family.” He says that Star and Belle are mischievous, but always lovable. “Star may be the smartest dog I’ve ever encountered. She actually has a star on her chest,” Eric says, “Belle is large mastiff looking dog, but actually thinks she is a lap dog. They love all of us and are responsible for keeping smiles on everyone’s faces. Jake and Zach have added dogs to their lives while away at school, so when they come home the number of dog beds and toys increases by a factor of two.” Eric says his greatest accomplishment is being the first Voyles to achieve an undergraduate and master’s degree, but his biggest struggle is that he doesn’t “schmooze” well. His dad was a crane operator, and his grandpa was a carpenter. “Both were also farmers. ‘Put your back in to it,’ was a phrase often used to describe anyone’s efforts that wasn’t at least one hundred percent,” Eric says. “I wish I could relax, make friends and take life a little easier; it just isn’t in my DNA.” In the next ten years, Eric has a lot to look forward to. He would love to see his boys graduate and become the men he knows they can be. His New Year’s resolution is to smile and laugh more, and his goal for 2020 is to launch TexAmericas Center’s first Build-To-Suit in over 10 years. “My advice is that if there is a secret to success it is to work hard, plan, be determined, and to have the attitude that ‘I will not be denied,’” Eric says. “The best advice I ever received was from my grandfather. He told me that the best thing you can do in life is try, honestly try. He said many people lie to themselves and others when they say they tried.”
Q&A with Eric 1. How do you spend your free time? Joyfully performing honey-do’s. 2. What is your favorite food? My wife’s vegetable lasagna. 3. What is your favorite TV show? It’s hard to choose between the Monkees, any of the Star Trek’s or Criminal Minds. 4. What is your favorite past time? Fishing, hunting and camping. 5. Who is your personal idol? Winston Churchill.

Texarkana Emergency Center Physician and Owner, Medical Director for Lifenet EMS and Texarkana EMT program
Matt Young 056 ALT Magazine | January 2020
Dr. Matt Young has practiced emergency medicine for 20 years. “I enjoy helping others in their most needy and vulnerable time in their life – during an emergency,” Matt says. “To be able to help your fellow man during that time and turn it into an outstanding experience is truly rewarding.” Matt was raised in Texarkana. He says that his mom and dad are the people who he looks up to the most. His father, Mitchell Young, practiced general surgery for forty years before he passed. His mother, Donna Young, has seven brothers and two sisters. “Anyone who can raise kids deserves respect,” Matt says. Matt is married to Cindy, and they have two sons: Logan and Garrett. Though they are involved in many community organizations, when they have free time, they enjoy spending time with family and the great outdoors. Matt especially loves fishing and being on the water. One of the most memorable moments of Matt’s career is the reward of having a part in saving a life and making a difference in a patient’s outcome. He says that they are expanding their business because he wants to better serve our community. “We are local providers who choose to live, play and pray in the same community we serve,” Matt says. “Our whole staff enjoys being a part of the four states area and supporting our community. We give a personal touch to make a difference in every patient’s experience.” In the next ten years Matt would like to continue to make a positive influence in the medical field and throughout the community. “My goal for 2020 is to continue to enhance my life
through education and faith in religion to make me a better person for myself and those I am blessed to come in contact with,” Matt says. “My New Year’s resolution is to practice what I preach, get more sleep, have a better diet, exercise more, and grow stronger in my faith and family.” Matt counts his greatest accomplishments as being an emergency medicine physician while having the skills and trust to treat others in their emergencies. “I also count being a Christian with an amazing wife and children and an awesome family that grew up in this community,” Matt says. “My advice to others who want to be successful in their field is to not let others that may not believe in you or your goals sidetrack your success. Use these doubts as positive motivation. I’d just like to say they never knew what I had in me, and I appreciate their challenge.”
Q&A with Matthew 1. What is the best advice you have ever received? Always do your best in everything you do and try to be a positive influence to others. 2. What has been your greatest struggle? Taking tests. 3. What is your life motto? Failure is a step to success, never give up. 4. What is your favorite food? Mexican food. 5. What is your favorite TV show? Living in Alaska.

How long have you been in law enforcement? What is your current job title?
What is the funniest moment you remember during your law enforcement career?
Tell us some background: Where did you grow up? Where did you attend school? Do you have an interesting story about you?
Tell us your most exciting, adrenaline-pumping, moment during your law enforcement career!
I began my law enforcement career In February of 2013 when I started working for the Lewisville Arkansas Police Department. I worked for them in many capacities that include working as a K9 Officer and serving as a rescue/recovery SCUBA diver. I transitioned to the Miller County Sheriff’s Office in June of 2017 where I served as a Field Training Officer and achieved the rank of Corporal before being transferred into the Criminal Investigation Division where I am currently assigned.
I have lived in the Texarkana area most of my life. I attended Texas High School until moving to Hot Springs Arkansas, where I graduated from Jessieville High School in May of 2000. Shortly after graduating, I returned home to Miller County where I felt I belonged. I attended Texarkana College where I achieved a Nationally Registered EMT certification and began a rewarding career with LifeNet EMS until pursuing my true calling in law enforcement.
What drew you to law enforcement? When did you want to become a police officer?
I knew from a very young age I was going to be in Law Enforcement. When I was a child my mother worked for the Texas Department of Public Safety as a secretary here in Texarkana. After school, she would pick me up and I would mill around their office or watch movies in the conference room, visiting with the occasional Trooper, who always took time to say hello to me. Little did I know, at that time, I would become a second-generation law enforcement officer. My mother went on to retire as a Police Officer from the Conway Arkansas Police Department.
How did your family/friends react to the news of your career choice?
There are so many things that happen in law enforcement that make you laugh. I think it’s just one part of the job that doesn’t get discussed as much as the bad things. One of the funny moments for me would be when I made a traffic stop on a vehicle. I approached the car and noticed it was the tooth fairy! Yes, the tooth fairy! This person had on a full tooth fairy costume, from the tutu to the crown and wand. It just so happened a kid I knew had just lost a tooth that morning, so, needless to say, I had quite the conversation with that child when I got home.
As a police officer there have been numerous adrenaline-pumping moments. One, I was on regular patrol, driving just south of the jail in the county where I was working at the time. I noticed a younger guy bounding across the road like a deer, I then noticed the guy had handcuffs on and I quickly realized “This guy just escaped!” Sure enough, about that same time, I heard the radio call come across, and I set in after him The chase was on! I chased the guy for a while but ended up losing him in some abandoned houses. We captured him a couple hours later after a manhunt.
What are the greatest challenges and rewards of law enforcement? There are many challenges to the law enforcement officer, ranging from active shooter response to navigating the culturally diverse world in which we live in. The reward is knowing I brought happiness to someone or brought resolution to someone in a difficult time.
If someone were going to enroll in the Police Academy, what are three key things you’d like them to know?
I would like for them to know. This journey they are about to begin is not easy. You need to mentally prepare for things you never thought My friends and family were very supportive in my decision to pursue you would see or do, some of those things can be terrible and some can be wonderful. Remember family comes first Always make time a career in Law Enforcement. for family. Family is what you are fighting to go home to at the end of your shift. Remember your code of ethics. This will always be the Describe your first day on the job as a police officer. My first day on the job was filled with excitement! It began with the measure through which you will be perceived. uncertainty of not knowing who or what I may encounter that day. What do you wish more people could realize about law My first day I rode with the Chief, so, I had that added little stress enforcement? factor. We made a traffic stop and unbeknown to me, the Chief and I would end up in a struggle, and then a foot chase with a guy a I wish more people would realize that being in law enforcement isn’t about carrying a gun, having flashy lights and being an authoritative lot larger than us. By the time it was all over my badge was ripped figure. If any of those make you want to get into law enforcement, off my shirt, I was missing my radio and completely out of breath. you’re doing it for the wrong reasons. Being a police officer is However, the guy I was chasing ran up to a second responding unit having compassion for people, treating people the way you want and was trying to open the back door to get in. Tell us what your department does a great job of!
The Miller County Sheriff’s Office does a great job of pro-active policing. The deputies are constantly patrolling and always vigilant. The deputies are always looking for the criminal element in the general public.
Time in a Bottle Day Spa
What interests do you have outside of law enforcement?
I enjoy going SCUBA diving during the warmer months, I play guitar and love music. In my spare time you can usually find me in the woods or in an aircraft hangar working on airplanes with a couple of friends.
How do you handle the stress and pressure the job brings?
I have a “Leave it at work” attitude. All the stress and pressure leave me when I leave work. You can’t take it home with you. Little things, like working around the house, hobbies, and interests, keep my mind occupied.
We have all heard that families play a supportive role in a police officer’s life. How does your family support you?
Family not only plays a supportive role in a police officer’s life, it plays the most important supportive role. Family is your rock. It is the main beam in which the whole support structure is built. This job would be very difficult without the support of a family.

One of the benefits of owning life insurance is the ability to generate a large sum of money, payable to your heir’s federal income tax free. Yet, for wealthier individuals subject to estate tax, a good portion of policy proceeds can be lost to taxes if not properly structured. However, if that same insurance policy was owned by an ILIT or purchased by the trustee, the proceeds are no longer included in your estate for tax purposes and all the proceeds can be used to provide liquidity, guarantee an inheritance or replace lost family income.
An ILIT allows the trustee to either purchase a life insurance policy on your behalf or transfer an existing life insurance policy into the trust. The insurance policy is now owned by the trust, and therefore the proceeds will not end up in your estate. Also, as you make gifts to fund the insurance premiums, you reduce your taxable estate. Upon death, the designated beneficiaries will receive the entire amount of the life insurance proceeds clear of probate and estate taxes, which may be used to pay off any debts or other expenses owed on the estate. Any remaining proceeds are distriuted according to your instructions as specified in the trust. R aymond James financial advisors do not render advice on tax or legal matters. You should discuss any tax or legal matters with the appropriate professional. *In the case of a transfer, under federal tax rules, you’ll have to survive such transfer for three years for the ILIT to be effective. If death occurs within three years, the proceeds will be brought back to the estate and subject to estate taxes.

Fish Tales with Mike Brower Amistad Fact or Fiction
Last month I got to fish Lake Amistad for a couple of days. My son-in-law Marshall Gooding and I fished one day and short of some nice desert scenery, I was not overly impressed. The water temp was 59 degrees and off colored with only about 2 ½ foot of visibility. There was almost no wind anywhere. After working through the progressions of patterns I have for fishing a new lake, things were pretty bleak. I could not find any shad anywhere, the moss edges did not produce anything, drops were a bust, and it appeared there was no life in the lake shallower than about 80 feet. Around 2:30 we ventured into a draw that had a slight breeze in the very back of the pocket, which was 4 feet deep and had some brush. We caught one from that on a spinner bait and had another bite. As we worked our way out to a secondary point, we caught another one slow rolling a ¾ ounce spinnerbait in 15 foot of water. That was about all the fun I could stand for one day and we put the boat on the trailer. I went back two days later and was faced with 30 mph winds out of the northwest. I don’t really need to mention the six foot waves I fought while getting back to an area I wanted to fish, but it was pretty sporty getting there. I did some graphing and some side scanning, but couldn’t find any shad. I decided to fish out deep in 20-35 foot of water with a rig and also a jig. That was not a good idea. I went and cranked some 45 degree banks in the 15-25 foot range and all I got was a big fat nothing. Same results came on a swim bait, umbrella rig, and jerk bait. Finally I decided to just start hitting the backs of the pockets like before, which resulted in four fish in the twothree pound range. After about 7 hours on windy, fun-filled Amistad, I fought the six to eight foot waves for five miles back to the ramp and went back to Del Rio. I found out later that the locals had a club tournament on Saturday there and fishing was no better for them than me. My verdict is that Amistad used to be a great lake when it was at normal pool and now that it is about thirty feet low, it is not what it once was. If you want to fish while ogling some nice desert scenery and watching more sheep than you need to go to sleep, then this is your lake. As for me, I’ll wait till it gets back to normal before I go back.
