From the Publisher... My life in the past few years has changed so much, from owning a photography studio, to adding a magazine, to building an indoor gun range. The learning curve has been great, but I have done it. One thing I have learned is that I can do anything that I put my mind and effort into! I have always tried to make sure my children understood that work ethic is everything. If you accept a job, then you do it and you do it right. You show up on time, do what is expected of you, and when you leave, the people you leave behind are sad to see you go. I evidently taught my children well. My son, Michael, is a well-respected IT “nerd” who lives in the Dallas area. He started by becoming certified in one Microsoft product and just kept going. He has, throughout the years, left jobs for better positions, moving up the ladder. He did so in a manner that most of the people he worked for have called him again to try to hire him back. I would say that is a pretty great testimony to his work ethic.
"Thin blue line” A phrase that refers figuratively to the position of police in society as the force which holds back chaos, allowing order and civilization to thrive.

My daughter, Jaclyn, is currently in Texas State Trooper Academy, where I am very proud to say she will be graduating in August. She has put her everything into doing her best and I know she will. She worked for me for years, either at the photography studio, the magazine, or managing the range. I miss her terribly every day. She is my best friend and a true treasure that God gave to me. However, I know that she was destined to be where she is right now. Even though she will be moving to Del Rio, Texas, soon, I am excited for what her future brings.
feature article truly love it. It was so much fun taking their photos and seeing them interact together. I learned that all police truly have different personalities – even those that are as close as brothers!
Working for myself has always been my greatest pleasure. I love having the ability to take off when I want to and have been very lucky to have awesome staff throughout the years. I am very lucky to have an amazing staff right now, Alyssa and Michelle, that will allow me to take off time to go visit Jaclyn in Del Rio regularly. I have never been there so I am excited to see where she will be living. And yes, it will be okay. Planes and automobiles are an awesome thing!

In addition, Jordan Johnson, who is attending West Point, is a true inspiration. When he contacted me about doing a story, the purpose was to show others, who grew up in less than optimal conditions, that you could make something of yourself if you tried. That he has done! I am proud to tell his story and hope you enjoy reading it.

Law Enforcement Prayer God, I ask for your hand over my life today. I step out into the unknown every time I go out, and I never know what troubles I may face. I need your power and strength to do what I feel called to do and that is to protect lives and uphold the law. Lord, I know you are with me, but often it is hard to remember that in the midst of such darkness. Shower me in your protection. Enable me to walk courageously today in your strength. Help me to see the people I interact with as your creation and enable me to embody your ways. This can be a tough job not just for me, but also my family. Help them to trust in your calling on my life, the life of a police officer. Bring comfort and protection to my loved ones. And Lord help me to see how much good I am doing in this world by being a law enforcement officer. Amen

TTPD Brothers Fight the Thin Blue Line TOGETHER B y : A n n e G ran a d o There are several things you may not know about Texarkana, Texas Police Department (TTPD). For example, did you know that they have 91 commissioned officers? Did you know that they are a Recognized Agency for Excellence in Best Practices by the Texas Police Chiefs’ Association? In fact, they have even been designated as a regional training provider by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. “The Texarkana, Texas Police Department is a great place to work, and I think that has a lot to do with our employees,” Public Information Officer for TTPD, Shawn Vaughn says. “The men and women at TTPD have a desire to help make Texarkana a better place to live, work, and raise a family. For many of them, that extends past the job. They don't just talk the talk; they walk the walk. They volunteer their time and efforts to help others. They are active in their church and all kinds of area organizations. I've seen them pull money out of their pockets to do something nice for someone that they don't really know. I'm proud to be associated with such a great group of people.” One other little-known fact about the Texarkana, Texas Police Department is that they have three sets of brothers working for them: Micah and Aaron Brower, Jarrod and James Dean, and Dustin and Colten Johnson. Shawn believes that many relatives go into this type of work because of how they were raised. “If your parents have
012 ALT Magazine | July 2019
taught you that we all have an obligation to give something back to our community and to work to make it a better place for the next generation, I think that a desire to work in law enforcement makes sense,” Shawn says. “Of course, not everyone chooses that path in life. Some people become teachers or doctors, but we all have the same goal at heart.” These brothers give up time with their own families to help and support our Texarkana community, often missing big events like a child’s play, big game or dance recital. However, for them, the job is worth it. “I believe that we are extremely blessed to work in a community that supports our police department. Something as small as a smile or kind word in passing can make all the difference to an officer who just had to do CPR on a two-year-old child or arrest a man for brutally beating his wife,” Shawn says. “The officers are human and feel the same emotions as everyone else. It’s nice to be reminded that there are still good things in the world, and it makes a sometimes very difficult and challenging job more bearable.” As these six men tell their story, we hope their personalities, their dreams, their character, and their humanity gives readers a personal glimpse inside the TTPD and the police cars that go past their community daily. Each man hopes to make a difference standing beside his brother by blood and his brothers in blue.

Aa ron a n d Micah Brower Aaron and Micah Brower have both worked for TTPD for almost fifteen years. The brothers have always been close even though they have antithetical personalities. They live right next door to each other, and they even hired into TTPD on the same date in July 2004. Micah is four years younger than Aaron, so he feels like he was definitely the “annoying little brother.” However, they share a lot of common interests like baseball, football and movies, so they are in constant communication. “Micah and I both like to joke around and have fun, but Micah is very empathetic and reads the room accurately every time. I’m much less aware and tend to place my foot firmly in my mouth,” Aaron says. On the other side, Micah says that Aaron is always thinking. “He thinks about the future; he thinks about past occurrences that led to current situations and how improvements can be made. I, on the other hand, am quick to go with the flow,” Micah says. Both brothers say that many of their childhood stories involve doing “stupid” things. For Micah, a certain Power Wheels incident comes to mind. “Aaron said that I could not ramp my Power Wheels three-wheeler from one bed to another across the room. I lifted my three-wheeler on top of the bed, got good momentum and made the leap. He was correct, I could not make it,” Micah says. “A few stitches to the face and a hysterical mother was the final result.” Aaron graduated from Maud in 1996 and then took criminal justice courses at Texarkana College before transferring to East Texas Baptist University (ETBU). He graduated from ETBU in 2001. “I always had a desire to help people, and I always thought I would be a

police officer,” Aaron says. “I thought that being a police officer would be a good way to serve my community and do some good. I didn’t think that police work interested Micah, but that being said, he’s really good at it.” Micah graduated from Maud in 2001 and worked in several fields. He waited tables, worked as a checkout clerk and a shoe salesman, and delivered beer. “I felt like all of those were ‘jobs’ and my brother talked me into taking the civil service exam and starting a ‘career,’” Micah says. “Aaron and I, along with two other brothers, were raised by great parents. We were taught early and often about being respectful and serving others. I believe that it carried over into adulthood for all of us, which pushed us all into careers that focused on serving others. One of our other brothers works for Bowie Cass Electric and the other is in the US Airforce.” Aaron currently serves as a patrol shift commander and field training coordinator, and Micah serves as a sergeant in the special investigations division, background investigator for the new applicants and part of the negotiator unit of SWAT. Even though their paths at work rarely cross, the two rely on each other as a sounding board for some of the frustrations of the job. “It’s nice to have someone who knows exactly what you are talking about, and you know you can trust to always have your back,” Aaron says. “I wish more people understood that split decisions are made in fractions of seconds, officers are human, and police officers’ actions are often misrepresented. The officers of TTPD are doing great work and are truly trying to do their best for this community.” Since they started the job together,

Micah says that they have always been available to each other to listen and support. “Our families love each other and find as many opportunities as possible to spend time with each other. We live next door, talk almost daily and are able to speak bluntly to each other about issues,” Micah says. “We both know that the other is available.” For both brothers, the biggest challenge in law enforcement is seeing some of the really hard situations that children are forced to go through. They have both been involved in very tragic investigations, and they say that it doesn’t get any easier. They also have to face the challenge of missing out on family events and knowing that their families are worried about them every shift. However, they still believe that the rewards outweigh the trials of the job. “The greatest rewards are knowing that you helped an innocent person out of a bad situation along with being in the right place at the right time, which can lead to saving a life,” Micah says. “Most importantly, I think that my wife and I have been able to raise our kids knowing that there are still honorable jobs that may not pay the most or get the most positive attention, but, are much bigger than just ‘you.’” When Aaron thinks about positive outcomes of police work, he remembers running into a man that he arrested ten years earlier. “He told me that he appreciated the way I treated him and what I told him,” Aaron says. “He told me he got clean after that and has been clean ever since. It really brought to my attention that every small thing you do in this profession can and does affect others.” In the future, both brothers have plans to continue to protect and serve until they can retire and still enjoy it! For now, they continue to follow the path their parents set out for them to give back to the community and do good for others. They both have noticed that this desire to serve is a common thread among many of their fellow officers. “Even if they are not working for TTPD, almost everyone who works as an officer has a sibling or spouse 016 ALT Magazine | July 2019
that is involved in service to others. Almost everybody has a direct family member who is a nurse, police officer, soldier or teacher,” Micah says. “I wish people realized and understood that people who serve, like police officers, have the same problems that everyone else has such as overdue bills, marital problems, depression, etc. They get no joy from arresting people, writing citations, or having to make decisions that affect others’ lives negatively. I believe that every frontline and support officer has a true passion to make this city better.”
Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.

James and Jarrod were close growing up, and they have always loved to hunt and fish together. However, James and Jarrod are quick to point out their differences. Jarrod is better at fixing and building things, but James is learning and getting better at it. James says that Jarrod is more serious and “by the book” than he is. Aside from their different talents and personalities, they were both ingrained with a strong sense of justice and compassion from an early age. “I would say we are alike

in that we care for other people and are always willing to help someone,” James says. The two had their first brush with police work long before either one worked in law enforcement. Jarrod’s truck was stolen, and two weeks later, the brothers worked together to find his truck, get it back, and get the thief arrested. James joined the force first. He graduated from Pleasant Grove in 1997 and after going to classes at Texarkana College and working for Coca-Cola, he went back to his childhood desire to be in law enforcement. He has been working for the department for 15 years this month. When Jarrod graduated from Pleasant Grove, he attended Texarkana College and Universal Technical Institute. He worked as an automotive technician for Toyota, owned a business selling tools, and then decided to pursue law enforcement. “Talking with my brother brought back the idea that I would join the department, but if you had asked me earlier in life, I never could have imagined that we would both be on the force together,” Jarrod says. “We work very well together and have fun when we get the chance, but we don’t see each other as much. I work on patrol and James
To some this is just a blue line.... ....to others it's a family crest. works in criminal investigations. However, we always talk about the good and the bad and support each other.” The unpredictability of the job is one of its greatest challenges. Jarrod says that not knowing if an officer is going to make it home to their family each day when they go to work is the biggest struggle. For James it is the fact that no two calls are the same and no call is routine. “I wish more people recognized how stressful law enforcement can be,” James says. “You never know what the next call is going to bring or what you are going to see. We also have to make a decision in an instant or someone might get hurt. However, TTPD does a great job of training us to be prepared for any situation that may arise.”
De a n B ro t h er s ALT-Mag.com | July 2019 021
The best days on the job are the ones when Jarrod and James know they have made a difference in someone’s life. “Anytime you can be there for someone in a hard time is a reward, and sometimes a simple thank you can be the biggest reward of all,” James says. Looking to the future, Jarrod hopes to one day become a field training officer while James’ goal is to promote to sergeant. As they put on the uniform day after day, they are working and learning how to better support their fellow officers and their community. “Through the good and the bad, TTPD is a second family,” Jarrod says. “We are all brothers and sisters.”

Col te n a n d Dus t in Joh n s on Colten and Dustin Johnson have always loved law enforcement and planned to pursue it in one way or another. Their father, Wayne Johnson, has worked for DPS for fifteen years: four years as an inspector and eleven as a trooper. “Colten and I have grown up around police officers our entire life,” Dustin says. “My brother and I hope to be half the man our dad has been to us, so we always wanted to follow in his footsteps.” The boys have consistently had a close relationship, but they say they are opposites. Dustin says he is outspoken and has never met a stranger. Colten is much quieter and reserved. When they were younger, they got into an epic fight with lasting infamy. During a disagreement, Dustin threw a metal and plastic toy revolver at Colten who dodged it just in time. Colten threw it back at Dustin, but the revolver’s hammer was gone and there was nothing but a metal rod sticking out of the back of the gun. The metal rod got stuck in Dustin’s forehead, and he had to have brain surgery later that day to
Johns o n B ro t h er s 026 ALT Magazine | July 2019
remove the gun and skull fragments that had knocked into his brain. He was ok, but his x-ray gets to travel the world now at health conventions. “I was rewarded with an awesome scar,” Dustin says. Colten graduated from LibertyEylau. He worked at Cavenders while attending school, but after graduation, he took a job at Ledwell. After taking the civil service exam, Colten was hired by TTPD at the age of 21. He has worked there for five years. “I decided to go through the academy and join TTPD because I needed something different to do rather than do the same thing each and every day,” Colten says. “With dad being a state trooper in Cass County, I knew that police work means something new every day.” Dustin also graduated from Liberty-Eylau and worked at Cavenders as an assistant manager until he was hired by TTPD at the age of 21. He has been working for TTPD for a little over a year. “All of my intentions were to work for the state, but my dad told me to take any job I could for the experience. Since working for the city of Texarkana, I’m
convinced that if you can work for TTPD, you can work for any agency,” Dustin says. “We receive the best training and go through the most intense situations. The department is by far the best agency in east Texas. It has been a blessing to get to work alongside my brother.” Though the brothers are on the same schedule and they can be off together for family events, Colten is a night shift officer and Dustin is a day shift officer. They may not see each other on the job, but they talk every day to share stories. “It’s constantly a competition because the entire force tries to compare us,” Dustin says. “It’s also a lot of fun sharing stories with our dad because we all know state troopers don’t get to have as much fun writing speeding tickets all day! However, our biggest support is our mother, Tina Johnson. She does a good job of keeping her police family in line. Mom always comes first.” Both Colten and Dustin share that policing is not always about writing tickets or chasing bad guys. Colten says there are a lot of things he wishes the
ALT-Mag.com | July 2019 027
community understood about being an officer. Not only does he spend a lot of time sitting in the car and typing reports, he and his fellow officers often have to bounce back quickly from a tragic call or investigation to the next situation, no matter what it may be. “Texarkana is a busy city. People should realize that on a good night, there are nine patrol officers on the street in a city of thousands,” Colten says. “TTPD is a very professional agency, in my opinion. With that being said, if we show up to a theft of a bicycle and seem less than enthused about being there, understand that we may have just left a call that involved an infant death or another type of mentally exhausting call.” Officers are also frustrated by the lack of strong sentencing in cases. When they get to see the events unfold, it can be disheartening to not see a rightful end. “The greatest challenges of law enforcement are putting a true criminal in jail for a crime that, in my opinion, was serious, just for them to be released from jail and put on probation or to serve a minor sentence,” Colten says. “Sometimes it feels more like a revolving door.” However, one of the benefits of being a patrol officer is the time they get to spend in the community. “I enjoy just stopping in neighborhoods, talking to kids, or stopping to help someone with
028 ALT Magazine | July 2019
a flat tire,” Dustin says. “Even though chasing bad guys is fun, the major part of our job is getting to touch lives every day. You never know what people are going through, so it’s a blessing to be the person God brings to them for that helping hand that they may need.” Many people ask Dustin what steps he will take next in law enforcement, but he says he is having “way too much fun” right now to think about something different. Colten wants to promote and retire at a decent age so that he can focus on what is important. “I want to have more time for faith and family,” Colten says.
BRAVERY
is not the ABSENCE OF FEAR but
ACTION
in the FACE of FEAR
“My plans are to continue working hard towards my goals and pushing to get them accomplished.” Colten is glad that his brother was inspired by his stories from the department and decided to join as well. He says that working with his brother and the other officers at TTPD is his greatest reward because they are the most selfless group of people in the city. Dustin thinks that so many brothers work for TTPD because it is the best department in north east Texas. “I think it’s obvious why we have so many brothers working for the department,” Dustin says. “TTPD provides the greatest opportunities and has the most highly trained officers around, so who wouldn’t want to be a part of such an elite family?”

Jordan Johnson 034 ALT Magazine | July 2019
Big Dreams from a Small Town B y : A n n e G ran a do
Though Texarkana may be small, the schools and citizens in our area are consistently pushing our young people to dream big. When Jordan Johnson graduated from Hooks in 2017, his life centered around small-town life. He played every sport, and when he was not playing sports, he was hanging out with “the boys”. However, two years later, Jordan’s life has drastically changed as he is now growing as a leader at the United States Military Academy, also known as West Point. “If you told me in high school that I was going to graduate from West Point, I would not have believed it,” Jordan says. “I want other high school students to hear my story because when you come from a small school, you do not see opportunities like the one I received very often. There has only been one other student from Hooks to ever attend a service academy."
While in school, Jordan’s teachers and family always encouraged Jordan to think about his future. He knew from a young age that he wanted to go to college, and his family consistently stressed the importance of an education. “My parents always told me that knowledge is everything,” Jordan says. “One thing my mom would always say is, ‘You don’t have to love school, but you can love what school can do for you.’ I knew that no matter what school I chose, they would support my decision.”
academy unless I was recruited to play football. The Airforce Academy was my first offer,” Jordan says.
Jordan’s family is rooted in this area. His father, Ben Johnson, is a graduate from Paul Pewit. His mother, Theresa Johnson, is a graduate of Hooks, and his brother, Benji Johnson, is a sophomore at Hooks High School. No one in Jordan’s family has ever been in the military, but they approved his choice to attend a service academy. On his first visit to see the Airforce Academy, Jordan Jordan hoped that football noticed that the school was would be his ticket out of town. Though he also played baseball, basketball, and even golf, his dream was to play on the gridiron. That dream came true when he was recruited by several schools to play. “When considering my options, I did not intend to go to a service

Never Stop Dreaming. very different and that it functioned differently than an average university. “The coaches kept reinforcing that coming to this school is a commitment bigger than football. They suggested that service academy graduates are also some of the most successful people in the civilian sector,” Jordan says. “After my visit, I had many conversations with friends and family about the offer, and I committed my junior year to the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) for football.” However, during his senior year, several gut-wrenching injuries seemed to throw Jordan’s plans off course. Jordan tore both anterior cruciate ligaments and broke both arms. “My senior year knee injury

took a toll emotionally because I know it was going to put me behind. Despite the injury, I was blessed to keep the offer from all of the schools; however, for me to attend the Air Force Academy there was a catch. They wanted me to attend the preparatory school prior to going into USAFA,” Jordan says. “Because I wanted to go directly to college after my senior year of high school, I chose West Point over USAFA. West Point provided the opportunity for direct admittance without attending a preparatory school.” Jordan knew he had to work hard to get in physical shape before he left for West Point. He even trained in Hawaii for two weeks prior to leaving. However, the

biggest trials at West Point turned out to be the classes and not the football workouts. “At West Point, I have faced many obstacles. Academically, I was not ready and struggled greatly my first two semesters while playing football,” Jordan says. “Honestly, I almost got kicked out for grades, but the school and my instructors gave me an additional chance because they saw my potential as an officer.”
himself to improving. His West Point instructors noticed his potential in leadership due to his positivity and social skills. “They saw that I was putting in effort, but they realized that I was just not used to the rigorous academic schedule,” Jordan says. “At the end of freshman year, I knew if I wanted to graduate from an institution like this, I would have to make a hard decision to leave the game that I loved.”
Jordan’s teachers saw many of the same qualities in him that his teachers and family in Hooks had seen. Jordan has always worked hard and dedicated

possibilities that succeeding at West Point could bring him. “Another one of the reasons I chose West Point was because of the opportunities offered to graduates from this institution,” Jordan says. “Now, I look back and I’m glad I made the decision to leave football because I have improved so much academically.” With more time in his schedule, Jordan turned his focus to the classroom. “My biggest challenge I faced was learning a lot of the material the first time I saw it,” Jordan says. “My best advice for other high school students is that the work they
do in high school may seem pointless, but the foundation they build in high school can really help later on in college.”
One amazing benefit of going to a school like West Point is the ability to have experiences that regular civilians may never have. For example, Jordan’s football team took a trip to the White House and met President Trump. “Even today I had a meeting with the dean of our school, and it is rare for a cadet to meet with her. I had the privilege to sit with General Jebb and discuss ways for other cadets who come in, like me, and struggle,” Jordan says. “I told her that one of the biggest issues is that people from other cultures lack communication amongst each other, so a friend of mine and I are teaming up with her and many other highranking officers to make that change. It has been a great privilege here to say that I have developed a relationship with so many officers.”
Another issue that Jordan faced at West Point was adjusting to the strong military environment and interacting with other students who come from such different cultures and backgrounds. However, Jordan is a very social person and his ability to talk to and interact with anyone has helped him make friends and learn from his peers. His determination to adjust and improve stems from his experiences growing up in Hooks. “I think my background has helped me develop a sense of perseverance. In East Texas, I see people fail and struggle, and I also experienced the same,” Jordan says. “The struggles I faced have really help keep my composure here Currently ranked as a cadet, at the academy.” Jordan will be a second Jordan has also had help from lieutenant when he graduates the only other Hooks graduate from West Point in two years. to attend a service academy, After graduation he plans to retired General Dave Palmer. make the military a career. “We communicate often “However, in the middle of my because he knows the struggle career I want to come back to of coming from a small town West Point to be a company Tactical Officer. I believe the like Hooks,” Jordan says.
Tactical Officers are the first people to have an influence,” Jordan says. “My Tactical Officer, Major Daniel King, helped me a lot, and I want to be that person for others.” However, Jordan remains open to where the path may lead. He planned to go to college, but never dreamed it would be to West Point. He planned to play football, but voluntarily changed directions to help improve his future. Jordan has learned that life is not so easily planned, and sometimes the changes in direction are what we learn from the most. Looking back on this journey, Jordan hopes to inspire other young people who might think that a service academy is out of their league. “I think so many more students should consider a service academy because they provide a great opportunity to learn and build on your potential. Also, I have met people that I would have never met if it weren’t for the academy,” Jordan says. “More than that, the academy has given me the chance to build on my past experiences and become the man I am today."

Overconfidence.
It’s what leads people to underestimate traffic or overestimate how much they can fit into a day. It’s also what led some of history’s greatest leaders to their downfall. But what does it mean for you and your financial goals?
UNDERSTANDING OVERCONFIDENCE
In simple terms, overconfidence is our tendency to overestimate what we know or what we’re capable of. It usually trips us up in small ways, often giving us blind spots about individual traits, like how quickly we can complete a list of chores or how our navigational skills compare to a GPS.

According to AARP, a quarter of people age 45 and over are not financially prepared should they suddenly need long-term care for an indefinite period of time. Other times we overestimate how long we have to save for retirement or our long-term goals. Young professionals might put off making contributions to their 401(k) and thereby forfeit the benefits of compounding. Or, individuals in or nearing retirement may put off planning their estate, putting their hard-earned wealth at risk.
THE GUARDRAIL
Overconfidence can undermine the success of a long-term financial plan. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be the downfall of yours. Start by taking a more objective look at past successes. How much was due to your actions? How much was due to external circumstance? How much was luck? How much was good planning? Apply this lens of objectivity to the future, as well. If you have instincts regarding a certain investment, consider what exactly is motivating those feelings. Objective research and information or a one-time stroke of luck? The reality is that staying objective can be a challenge if your voice is the only one in the room. That’s why I work closely with individuals like you to provide the information, resources and experienced insight you need to make sound decisions regarding your wealth and future. • • • While believing you can always beat traffic likely won’t have dire consequences, overconfidence can sabotage your decisions when it comes to more important and complex matters. By taking steps to counteract it, we can help keep you just the right amount of confident when it comes to achieving your goals.
Overconfidence can lead people to: • Focus on short-term wins rather than long-term goals • Gamble and make bets • Enjoy placing trades or making other financial transactions frequently • Think they’ve found the next “big thing” • Stray from their established financial plan

Fish Tales with Mike Brower Thirsty Yet? As summer is now upon us, I would like to take some time to discuss keeping hydrated. Water makes up about 70 percent of our body and as we breathe or sweat, water is lost. This loss must be replaced or we will begin to become sluggish, tired, lacking clarity of thought (fancy way of saying goofy) and experience muscle cramps. There are several ways to keep hydrated -- water, sports drinks, and other concoctions which may or may not work. So let’s stick to the basics. Water is good but should be alternated with something that replaces the minerals and salts we also lose. In the past, I have preferred to alternate water with either Gatorade or Powerade -- say half a bottle of water and then a third bottle of sports drink. That combo works for me pretty well most of the time, but I will be trying something new this summer. A couple of products from Advocare -- Spark and Rehydrate -- both seem to do a great job! (And they are available from my wife!) Something else that works well is drinking about eight ounces of water and sports drink on the way to the lake. This loads up fluids lost during sleep and will help to keep you from going into a water deficit. What you really don’t want to do is drink beer or caffeinated drinks on the water. The hydration is offset by the diuretic effects they have. Just remember if you are thirsty, you have waited too long to rehydrate and are already behind the curve.
