DEBBIE BROWER

What I’ve noticed is not only in the military, but in the first responders community, that when you reach out your hand to help one of them, they almost always grab your hand with only one of theirs, because they’re using their other hand to reach behind them and pull up somebody else with them. ~ Taya Kyle The men and women who put themselves in danger to protect our freedoms are my heroes. From gaining our independence, something we celebrate every 4th of July, to today’s military personnel, to our police force, these men and women are dedicated to making our country a better place. First responders come from all backgrounds, varying socio-economic statuses, and different family structures. Some knew their entire lives that they wanted to be a first responder; others chose that career path as they matured. Either way, they are the first ones there to help when we call. My son-in-law, Marshall, has recently chosen this as his career. I have known him since he was 16 years old, and he always wanted to be a police officer. He made a few other career choices since graduating from college, getting married, and finally choosing to do what he always wanted to do. I am a very proud mother-in-law because I know he will be wonderful. The Eagle Scout has finally landed in a position perfect for him. The brave people included in his month’s ALT are from very different positions, yet they all chose to serve and protect. Danger is always present. Whether they are on duty, at home, or eating out, they are always on guard. Make sure you tell them “thank you,” even if it’s just the words. They deserve it. My favorite way to thank a first responder is to surprise them by paying for a meal, anonymously. We have some really amazing restaurants in our wonderful city, and I hope you all have an opportunity to enjoy them. Our restaurant guide is the best place to find delicious food! Oh my goodness! You will not be disappointed. Check it our and go taste for yourself. Maybe I will see you there! May God bless you...

By Anne Granado

To tell the story of Kristy Smith, is to tell the story of a woman who never let anyone or anything stop her from achieving her dream. Standing at only 5 feet 2 inches, Kristy’s petite stature and cheerful nature might make someone question her abilities as a police officer for Texarkana Texas Police Department. However, this mother of four has run after fleeing criminals, held crying victims, testified at important trials, investigated gruesome and horrific criminal acts, and faced down suspects who wanted to harm her throughout her ten years at Texarkana Texas Police Department. In spite of all she has witnessed and endured, Kristy still says that this is the “dream job.” From patrol officer to criminal investigations, being a police officer is all Kristy has ever wanted to be. “I don’t think anything could have prepared me for being a police officer except for having the gumption to go at it full speed ahead and learn as I went through training and got experience,” Kristy says. “I believe my drive for public service and equality keep me going. This is my calling and my life’s goal of being a person’s detective, and I would not be happy if I were not a police officer. I also enjoy Texarkana Texas Police Department and would not want to work anywhere else. Texarkana is my home, and I am glad I get to help make it a better place.”

Kristy’s father, Charles Pixley, worked thrown away a scholarship to Texas for Cass County Sheriff’s Office as a A&M Commerce and hadn’t been able jailer and Sheriff’s Deputy. While on to accomplish my dream,” Kristy says. the job, he met a dispatcher for Atlanta Police Department named Sherry, and But, Kristy found a new path. She in 1981, they got married. In 1983, they began working at Bowie County Correctional Center in 2005 while had their first daughter, Kristy, and in completing the East Texas Police 1985, they had Elizabeth. Though the Academy. She took classes at her alma family didn’t have much in the way of material possessions or wealth, Charles raised his daughters with the mindset that they could become anything they wanted if they worked hard enough. “He taught us to be fair, firm and consistent,” Kristy says. “He instilled courage, honor and service into us. He was a man who stood for the laws and always doing the right thing, no matter what. He said that you are going to make mistakes, but don’t run from them. He told us to face the consequences and learn from them. Though he never had to worry about this, he also told us that if we went to jail, he wasn’t bailing us out.” Kristy’s mother, Sherry Pixley and father, Charles Pixley Charles battled rheumatoid arthritis, so he wasn’t able to advance in his career as far as he would have liked. “He never wanted to do anything else but law enforcement,” Kristy says. “Our father raised us to value public service. He was the first person who taught me to shoot a gun. He taught me so many things. My dad is the inspiration behind everything I’ve accomplished.” When Kristy graduated from Atlanta High School in 2002, she knew she wanted to be in law enforcement, so she joined the Marine Corp with the intention of becoming an MP (military police). However, she was sent home after enduring several hip fractures. “I came home utterly defeated. I had 016 ALT Magazine | July 2017

One memory that stands out to Kristy is the time when she was patrolling an area and saw a mother and some kids sitting on a front porch. Kristy waved and smiled at the kids, and the kids raised their hands in a hesitant wave, only to get a slap in the back of the head from their mother. “We don’t talk to the police,” the mother said. “It is the anti-cop attitude that I really wanted to change. This incident inspired me,” Kristy says. “I know that there are bad police out there. There are bad people in every profession. However, if I saw bad policing, I’d be the first person to say something. I just personally have never seen a corrupt cop on the TTPD force.” Kristy loved her job on patrol, but in 2012, she got the opportunity to work with the Problem Oriented Police Team (POP Team). This team specifically addresses street crime associated with narcotics associations. “On the POP team we had more time to investigate in depth because you weren’t running call to call like on patrol,” Kristy says. “This experience helped me when I joined special investigations.”

mater, Atlanta High School, from Mike Dupree, the longtime police chief who passed away in 2016. “He was an excellent teacher, and I was so glad I had the opportunity to learn from him,” In 2013, Kristy jumped over a 6 foot Kristy says. fence in pursuit of a suspect and tore In 2007, Kristy was hired as a patrol her knee to shreds. She had to have three knee surgeries to recover. “I was officer for Texarkana Texas Police scared,” Kristy says. “I was in complete Department. The first few experiences depression even thinking that I may reminded Kristy of how much she had to learn. “I never could have guessed not be able to do police work anymore. what police work was going to be like,” You never anticipate not being able to Kristy says. “I didn’t even know the do what you love in life. Luckily, with a streets of Texarkana. I wasn’t familiar lot of prayer, my knee healed, but my with the Texarkana Police Department. time on the POP team was done.” All I knew was that I wanted to work Kristy was then offered an opportunity some of the riskier areas because I to work for the Criminal Investigations really wanted to make a difference.” Division of the TTPD. She started

out working juvenile and sexual assault cases, and now she handles sexual assaults, homicides, and any personon-person crime. “Literally, this is my dream job, but I guess I said that when I was on patrol too!” Kristy says. “This position involves every aspect of police work. You almost have to be over the top organized to do it.” In criminal investigations, Kristy is assigned cases. Then, how she approaches each case is different. “No case is exactly the same. In the 10 years I’ve been here, it’s always something different. First, you have to determine if an offense occurred. Then, did it occur in Texarkana, Texas?” Kristy says. “Next, you interview witnesses and the suspect. If you don’t have a suspect, you talk to witnesses, get video surveillance, gather evidence, send evidence to the lab, and get search warrants for houses, property and cars. I feel like my dad prepared me for every aspect of doing good police work. I apply what he said about being fair, firm and consistent. Plus, police work is a lot of common sense. You learn the law, and then you figure out how to enforce the law. I even find myself using dad’s words when I’m talking to suspects. I encourage them to face the consequences. I tell them they can’t keep running; they’ve just got to deal with what they’ve done.”

Another important aspect of Kristy’s job is being there for victims. Many times, it’s just Kristy and the victim in court. A lot of times, that victim is recounting the worst day of their life in extreme detail. “My job is to keep them motivated and to be there for them,” Kristy says. “I hug their neck and talk to them. I’m not a counselor, but I do have my share of life experiences and difficulties. When I talk to victims, I tend to share the wisdom I’ve learned through other victims who have faced what they are facing. I also help them find state funded therapy and resources like the Children’s Advocacy Center here in Texarkana.”

Some things can be witnessed but not understood. Through her ten years on the job, Kristy has seen good, evil, kindness, hatred, fear, anger, love, and jealousy. Her eyes have been opened to the ugliness of what mankind can do. However, seeing all of this hasn’t jaded her. Instead, it has made her want to be an advocate for change, an example to others. “We had a woman come in one day and say to me and some fellow officers that we didn’t understand her situation, that we didn’t know what it was like to not have any opportunities,” Kristy says. “I didn’t say this, but this woman was wrong. I came from nothing. We had nothing growing up. This woman has the same opportunities I did. I had to work for everything I have; nothing was handed to me or my sister. I wanted to tell her about me and my sister and what we had overcome.” According to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Community Policing Newsletter, even though steps have been taken to ensure gender equality in law enforcement, women only make up 13% of the police force. “I want to tell women everywhere that if you want to be in law enforcement, there is a place for you,” Kristy says. “There are not many women in this profession. I am the only woman in the persons’ investigation unit, and I want to be an

example for other female police officers that if you give 100% and work really really hard, you can have the job you’ve always wanted. I’m 33 years old, and I’ve arrived at my goal in life, my dream job.” In 2014, Kristy’s life changed completely. Her father had always battled medical issues, but the family was called to the hospital knowing that Charles would not recover this time. “I sat by his bed and told him stories. He always wanted to hear my stories from the job,” Kristy says. “The day before we went to the hospital, I made my first perfect 100 at the shooting range. I told him, and he said, ‘I am so proud of you.’ He was never the same after that, so this moment is so special to me. He was never a ‘touchy feely’ person, and he didn’t express his emotions very much. But, I know he would be so freaking excited to see what I’m doing now. I’m doing what he always wanted, but he was never able to accomplish it. I think that’s why it affected me so much when I hurt my knee. I was so scared that I would never be able to achieve this dream for him.” The next year brought more change for Kristy. In 2015, she began dating a fellow TTPD officer. They were married in 2017 and raise their blended family of four children with their three dogs: Winston, Punkin and Cocoa Bean. “I love how we are totally opposite, and the fact that we understand each other’s job. It’s nice to be married to a fellow police officer because we can talk about the challenges of the job,” Kristy says. “He truly is my soul mate.” For Kristy and her husband, it’s impossible to raise four kids without using what they’ve learned as police officers. “My job makes me want to go home and hug my kids tight and to 018 ALT Magazine | July 2017

spend every waking free moment with them,” Kristy says. “We teach them to be wary of strangers. We don’t want them to be victims, so we want to prepare them. We want them to be aware of the world because being a police officer was eye-opening to me. I’ve seen so

raided a group of gambling machines in Texarkana, but on social media people were blasting TTPD because there was a murderer on the loose. They asked why TTPD was worried about these machines instead of looking for this criminal, but TTPD had it covered. There is more than one police officer, more than one crime. Unlike the people behind the keyboard, the police officers have seen the evidence and know what happened. When the jury takes the stand, the police officers have already seen the pictures and heard the statements. I wish people knew what we knew sometimes. In the end, the goal is not an arrest; it’s justice for the victims.”

With every crime solved, every victim who gets justice, and every criminal who is taken off of the street, Kristy gives the credit to her father’s influence in her life. While striving to be “fair, firm and consistent,” Kristy remembers all the life lessons her father taught her and applies them to her dream job. Kristy is also very proud of her sister, Elizabeth Jacobsen, who has overcome personal trials to become a nurse practitioner with dreams of owning her own clinic. Both of Charles’ girls worked much. Sometimes I wish I could take hard to achieve their goals and give my eyeballs out and let someone else see what I’ve seen. I’ve been spit on, hit, back to their community. “I always wanted to be a strong female,” Kristy kicked and called so many names that says. “My parents told us that we could it’s just become laughable.” do whatever we wanted if we worked In the future, Kristy wants to complete hard, and they were really supportive her bachelor’s degree in criminal of us and our dreams. But there really justice. She also wants to keep making weren’t any females in our family that a difference in our community by went out there and conquered. Now, defying police stereotypes. “The current I look at me and my sister, and we are view of police officers bothers me,” out there conquering.” Kristy says. “The way the media portrays police officers and the reality of a police officer is vastly different. Though, I will say that our local media does a great job of presenting the news without bias. But, it’s a reason why I have to ALT stay off of social media. Recently, TTPD

Home of the free... because of the brave. As we celebrate America’s birthday July Fourth by shooting fireworks and saluting the flag, we remember the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom. The independence we enjoy today would not be possible without the brave individuals who make sacrifices daily to uphold the foundation our country is built upon. Our military personnel, first responders, and police officers work late, run towards danger, miss their family’s birthday parties and holiday gatherings, and put themselves in the line of fire to keep America and its citizens safe. Today we want to say “thank you” to some of our local heroes in uniform and urge all of our readers to “back the brave.”

One of the reasons Michael decided to pursue law enforcement as a career is because of a trooper he witnessed at a gas station. “One day I was getting gas and a Arkansas state trooper was there buying gasoline for a family in need,” Michael says. “I remember the kind and caring actions of this trooper, and at that moment, I knew I wanted to be like him. Troy Estrada Air Force

Troy joined the Air Force in November of 2013 when he was 19 years old. He works in the communications field. “I had known for most of my life that I wanted to do some sort of military,” Troy says. “My father was in the military, and he learned a lot, and I wanted to be like him. All of my family is very

supportive with me being in the military. They understand that I can’t always talk about my job and that I could deploy or move at any time.” To deal with the challenges of his job, Troy tries to find stress relievers and loves to play video games. “I

try to keep my work at work and not bring things home,” Troy says. One of the most exciting moments that Troy has had in uniform was being able to do a flight simulator of the B-52. One of the funniest moments Troy experienced was when a new person moved to his office. “He looked very young, but he was 22 at the time, ” Troy says. “One of our sergeants asked him if his parents knew where he was, and if they thought he was at summer camp.” Through his time in the military, Troy has gained valuable work experience. He also says it has helped him become a better leader. “On my first day in uniform, I felt proud to be wearing it, but I also felt nervous or anxious that I wouldn’t be able to live up to the expectations of it,” Troy says. “It has given me a different mindset on how I see the world.”

Kelly got his first responder certification when he was 15 years old with Pleasant Grove Volunteer Fire Department. “I always knew I wanted to be involved in public service like nursing or fire fighting, but this experience helped me realize that helping people in their worst time was what I wanted to do more than fire fighting,” Kelly says. “My first day in

Date Night how to choose a restaurant for a first date

1. If you’re especially nervous about a first date, choose a restaurant where the food isn’t the only focal point. Check to see if there will be live music or activities going on. 2. It doesn’t matter if your favorite chain restaurant is offering dinner specials for two. Choose an eatery with a unique flair. Go somewhere that offers something new. 3. Any lady would be impressed by the thoughtfulness of choosing the perfect first date setting. Just don’t forget to make a reservation! Flowers wouldn’t hurt either.

CHEF HIGHLIGHT

Nothing brings people together like good food. The meals we share around the table are often tied to our strongest memories of laughter, family and friends. Luckily, local chefs and restaurant owners provide us with opportunities to enjoy a delicious meal or a sumptuous dessert without taking time away from those we love. Jennifer Tanner is the chef at local favorite, Julie’s Deli, and Doug Sloan is the owner of Wing Stop in Texarkana. Bryant and Whitni Allen opened a health food restaurant where flavorful and nutritious meals can be picked up to enjoy at home, and Claude Moore is the chef at Cafe 511. Cathy Smith runs a training program for residents at Randy Sam’s Outreach Shelter called Be the Blessing Bakery. All five of our local culinary experts provide unforgettable experiences for their patrons, and understand the importance of memories created around food.

JENNIFER TANNER Julie’s Deli Jennifer’s background is actually in accounting. She wasn’t able to go to culinary school when she first wanted, so she traveled and took various classes and courses as her schedule allowed. However, her love of cooking began around the family dinner table. “Meal times were such an important part growing up. No matter what was going on, we always had family dinner,” Jennifer says. “I come from a family of great from-scratch cooks and learned my favorite recipes from my parents and grandparents. I gained more ‘real-world training’ from owning my own catering business and then was baptized by fire at Julie’s.” At Julie’s Deli, customers can order fresh and delicious sandwiches, wraps, burgers and salads from the restaurant, or they have options for take-home dinners to enjoy with family. In the market area, patrons can find delicious bakery goods, fresh meats and cheeses, casseroles to go, custom basket and gifts, and a chef ’s fresh case with seasonal entrees, sides and salads. Their slogan is, “Cooked by our chefs, enjoyed by your family.” “I love the idea of being able to help someone who may be having a crazy, hectic day, still be able to sit down and spend time with their family without having to spend precious family time cooking first,” Jennifer says. “And, I love the food business! It is never boring! I’ve worked every position in a restaurant at one time or another.” Jennifer loves to cook “Southern, local and seasonal,” which she also loves to eat. She respects Southern chefs like John Besh and Hugh Acheson. “I admire them for their commitment to bringing basic culinary knowledge back to young people--at home and in schools,” Jennifer says. Jennifer’s most memorable Fourth of July was the time she was in New York City. She said that the fireworks were “extraordinary.” For this July Fourth, Jennifer will be celebrating at home. “Like much of America - we grill!” Jennifer says. “Hats off the my hubby, who makes the absolute best barbecued chicken on the big green egg and we usually find time to work in homemade ice cream.”

CHEF HIGHLIGHT

CATHY SMITH Be the Blessing Bakery Cathy was not classically trained as a chef. “I’m not a chef. I’m a fat gal who can cook,” Cathy says. Instead, Cathy’s love of cooking came from making memories with her family. “I make my Momma’s chicken and dressing. I make my Aunt Geraldine’s biscuits and my Aunt Florine’s pot roast,” Cathy says. “They all cooked with love. That’s how they loved. You know, your basic Southern thing: company comes over, you feed them. Someone loses a family member, you feed them. Someone is sick and in the hospital, you feed their family.” Down home, Southern food is what Cathy loves to make. “I’m country, bless my heart, and Southern food reminds me of home: my Momma, barefoot in the cornfields, shelling peas on the back porch, catching crawdads in the creek, lightening bugs in a jar, a plate of fried green tomatoes, a hot slab of cornbread straight out of an old cast iron skillet, and a mess of purple hull peas. It all takes me right back home,” Cathy says. “My Daddy would say that my Momma could ‘sure put a good scald on a yardbird.’ Loose translation of that means that my Momma could sure fry up some chicken. I can, too.” With a background in catering and the restaurant business, Cathy volunteered to teach a cooking class once a month at Randy Sam’s Outreach Shelter in 2015. Then, in 2016, Williams Memorial Methodist Church asked Cathy to bake 200 cupcakes in her cooking class that they could use for an event, and Be the Blessing Bakery at Randy Sam’s was born. Be the Blessing Bakery is a 16 week job training program where residents of the shelter are taught commercial kitchen skills, bakery skills and how to follow health codes. Bakery trainees leave the program with a food handler’s permit and a job reference from Cathy. “Job skills along with self-confidence can go a long way in obtaining a job and housing for a fresh start,” Cathy says. Be the Blessing job training program at Randy Sams’ Outreach Shelter is working to strengthen the program to best meet the mission to educate the residents of the shelter who choose to be in the program in order to obtain jobs and return to self-sustained community living with the bakery products being the byproduct of the program. “For this reason we are scaling back our product offering and eliminating our cake line. This will allow us to focus on our students in the program and allow us to partner with area restaurants and bakeries in finding jobs for those who complete the program,” Cathy explains. For July the Fourth, Cathy and her family get together and have a BBQ. “Way back in the day when Lake Wright Patman was called Texarkana Lake, my aunts, uncles, and cousins would all gather there for a day of picnics and swimming on July the Fourth,” Cathy says. “It seems like a 150 years ago when Steven, Douglas, Larry, Nancy, Judy, and I had to wait 30 minutes after we ate to go back in the lake to swim! As I get older, all my favorite memories center on family.” 044 ALT Magazine | July 2017

DOUG SLOAN Owner of Wing Stop in Texarkana Ever since Doug was a child, he dreamed of owning his own business. “The best thing about owning your own restaurant is being able to interact with the customers to create a friendly atmosphere,” Doug says. “It also provides the ability to be your own boss. However, you have to run things that will help you have a successful business.” Wingstop restaurants serve fresh chicken wings, hand-cut fries, and other famous sides. Their wings can be ordered as traditional, bonein wings, or boneless wings, and can be tossed in a selection of bold flavors such as mango habanero, Louisiana rub, hickory smoked barbecue, lemon pepper, original hot, garlic parmesan and teriyaki. Doug never went to culinary school but he loves to cook. His enjoys the classic American steak and potatoes or Italian favorites. “I love to make big pans of lasagna to share with family and friends,” Doug says. “It’s an all day process.” This July Fourth, Doug is going to spend it with family and friends. “My favorite Fourth of July memory is spending time at Gladys Morriss’ house in Nash,” Doug says. “There was always a huge cookout and the biggest fireworks display. This was one of her favorite holidays.”

CLAUDE MOORE Chef at Cafe 511 The new Cafe 511 offers a casual dining experience with an upscale flare. They serve modern cocktails and American food such as steaks, prime rib, and seafood. In the kitchen, Claude is inspired by Bobby Flay and his unorthodox style. “I loved helping my mother in the kitchen as a child,” Claude says. “Now, the best part of my job is the energy and smiles that my customers give when they taste great food.” Claude is a self-taught chef who has held every position in the back of the house. At home he loves to cook brisket, but his favorite things to eat are Waygu beef and yellow fin tuna. Claude is bringing his passion for food to customers at Cafe 511. “The first time I cooked was for a family reunion. I was 16 years old and was working at Wendy’s on Stateline. I had just got promoted to the grill, and I thought, ‘I can do this for a living,’ Claude says. “I convinced my family to allow me to cook for the reunion, but after cooking all day for free, I changed my mind and joined the Navy! So, now some 30 years later, I must say your passion never dies. Now I’m cooking everyday, but the smiling, happy customers who repeatedly come through our doors is priceless.” This July Fourth, Claude is going to celebrate with family and friends. “We will have a backyard cookout with plenty of shade and definitely some cold beer,” Claude says.

BRYANT AND WHITNI ALLEN Heat it Up Heat it Up is a clean eating restaurant in Texarkana where customers can pick up healthy meals to go. It is now conveniently located inside The Sportsplex by Health Care Express on Richmond Road. Whitni and Bryant, the husband-andwife team that owns Heat It Up, are certified nutrition and fitness specialists. They’re passionate about clean eating, and they offer meal prepping services to the Texarkana community. Both Whitni and Bryant have years of personal training experience. They can help you achieve your weight loss goals and adopt a healthier lifestyle. “We wanted to make healthy eating convenient,” Bryant says. “We wanted to show people that healthy eating doesn’t have to be bland and boring.” At Heat it Up, the menu changes weekly to provide a varied diet to their customers. Meals can be pre-ordered, and the menu is updated on their Facebook page each week. Each meal comes with nutrition information on the label as well as heating instructions. “The best part of owning our own business is that we get to learn and grow together not only as a couple but as best friends,” Whitni says. “We got 99 problems, but our business isn’t one! Owning a business can be hard, stressful, and demanding, but seeing the rewards of your hard work and passion make it all worth it.” Whitni and Bryant did not go to culinary school, but they love to watch Food Network and cook at home. Their favorite thing to prepare at home is shrimp. “We love any kind of shrimp: fried shrimp, boiled shrimp, coconut shrimp, shrimp kabobs, shrimp stew, grilled shrimp, broiled shrimp, sauteed shrimp. Shrimp is the fruit of the sea,” Bryant says. The couple’s favorite Fourth of July memory is sitting on the hood of their car on the side of the road watching the fireworks light up the night sky. “This year, we are going to sit back, relax in our matching Old Navy American Flag shirts, light a few sparklers, and call it a night,” Whitni says. 052 ALT Magazine | July 2017

Fulfilling Dreams: By Lisa Myers, Ed.D. BAAS Program Coordinator Texas A&M University-Texarkana

There Is No Too Late, Too Old

that point considered college as a place for young people. College was a missed opIn the spring of 1979, Dianna McKay was portunity for her. The people at Chapel Hill nearing high school graduation, had evconvinced her otherwise, and in the fall of erything in place to attend Kilgore College 2012, Dianna became a freshman in college that coming fall, and was already making and started her journey toward earning plans as to what she would do after college. her degree, a Bachelor of Applied Arts and All that changed when Dianna’s mother, a single mother raising three daughters, suffered serious injuries in a car wreck. Dianna would not be going to college after all. Instead, she would enter the workforce, take care of her mother, and see to it that her two younger sisters finished school. Dianna does not regret her choice to care for her family. She would absolutely make the same choice again today if need be. However, without taking away from the firm conviction that she did the right thing at the time, she admits that she also felt a real sense of loss when she realized she would not be going to college. Picking up the pieces and moving forward, as is Dianna’s nature, she made the best of her situation. She entered the workforce fulltime, and just as she would have done in college, she advanced into a position of leadership, garnering valuable knowledge and skills that set her apart as a leader in her field. As her responsibilities at work and with her mom’s care increased over the years, Dianna came to the point that she had to make another choice. She had to leave her job. Her mom’s care and the job’s increasing travel requirements simply would not accommodate one another, and once again, she chose her family. That decision eventually led Dianna to Chapel Hill Independent School District where she took an administrative assistant position.

In short, the past four and a half years have been incredibly rewarding for Dianna. Not only did she graduate Magna Cum Laude with her BAAS in hand, but she added, “I have a different feel about myself. A confidence level. A sense of accomplishment and a degree that’s going to allow me to move into roles that would have never been open to me without it. It’s so surreal. I almost can’t believe it! I did it! Yes, I did this!” Now that Dianna has her bachelor’s degree, she will be taking the steps to become a Texas Certified Educational Diagnostician, a position that will carry forward the work she has already done at Chapel Hill. She also plans to continue her education with a master’s degree and maybe even a doctorate.

Sciences (BAAS) from Texas A&M UniversityTexarkana.

In describing that monumental move, Dianna said, “I was afraid, well, maybe apprehensive is a better word. I had no idea, no idea Going into that job, Dianna knew she at all, what the world would be like once I wouldn’t make as much as she made in her entered college. I had to do it, though; I had previous job, but what she gained there to do it for me. I always wanted to go, but it ended up being invaluable. It was at Chapel was always on a back burner to everything Hill that people started telling Dianna, else.” “You’re too smart to not get your degree. It didn’t take Dianna long to realize her You need to do this!” Dianna already knew world as a college student was going to she was capable of accomplishing whatever be quite rewarding. Yes, she was older, but she set her mind to, but her mindset up to 056 ALT Magazine | July 2017

her learning skills, knowledge from her work experience, and her personal maturity equipped her for every challenge she faced. She quickly realized that she was not behind in any way; in fact, she was a top performing student in all her classes! She made the dean’s list and president’s list throughout her degree, and found out what she learned through experience in the work field could be assessed for college credit. For her, that prior knowledge brought her a semester’s worth of college credit!

Some may say Dianna is too old to invest the time and money into more education, but Dianna argued, “I’ve been bitten by the learning bug. I absolutely love it, so why wouldn’t I continue down this path to learn even more? I don’t care if I’m even in my sixties. I’m going to do this, too. Look, if I had not done my BAAS for whatever reason, I would still be 56 years old today, but I would be so full of regret. There is no too late, too old.” For more information on the BAAS program, contact Rachael Cherry, BAAS Program Specialist, at rcherry@tamut.edu or 903-3346675. We would love to help you get started on the road to earning your degree.

Fish Tales with Mike Brower Sharing As we roll right into summer, fishermen now must share the water with the pleasure craft and skiers, or as I call them “cumbersome craft” and “moving targets.” Fishermen are required to share the water twice a year, once in the winter and then again in summer. We tend to coexist pretty well most of the time, but sometimes we grate on each other. It’s a good idea to give that skier plenty of room in case they fall and it would be nice if that guy in the party barge would not split the 50 feet between me and the bank running by and waving. Most of the issues between boaters are from being on plane and running by too close. Believe it or not, if you are in the river (either one) and run by someone tied or anchored, you are supposed to change the speed of your motor by slowing slightly. This lets them know you see them. If you are going to run by someone and it requires you to get within about 100 feet of them, you really need to slow down and idle by. The only saving grace is we don’t have too many jet skiers on Millwood or Patman. Fishing early in the morning and late in the afternoon can be a way to avoid most of the issues, but simple courtesy is the best way to share the water.
